LT Mark Beard’s performance in first start ‘beyond good,’ coaches and teammates say

ATHENS — Mark Beard’s most difficult assignment against Auburn on Saturday had nothing to do with blocking oncoming defenders.

The Georgia left tackle’s biggest issue didn’t even occur in the game itself: He had to figure out how to distribute tickets prior to kickoff. With his cousin, LaDarius Owens, playing for the Tigers, the pair had to figure out which family member would use what ticket. They wound up splitting their allotment evenly.

Beard made it a memorable experience for his family, as the Alabama native made the first start of his Georgia career against his favorite team from childhood.

“You can never be perfect,” he said after Monday’s practice. “I messed up a couple of times, but I think I played a pretty good game.”

Beard and Owens shared a brief conversation on the field following Georgia’s 38-0 victory. Owens promised to call Beard later that night to discuss the outcome in more detail. The call never came.

“I think he was just disappointed,” Beard said.

His family’s members weren’t displeased, though, and they let Beard know it after the game. Given their split allegiance between the Bulldogs and the Tigers, Beard said his family struck the right note.

“All of them just told me they’re a Mark Beard fan and that’s all I needed to hear,” he said. “That’s good enough for me.”

Offensive line coach Will Friend felt Beard’s play was beyond “good” Saturday. Beard said his performance earned a spot on the team’s weekly “Victor’s Club,” an honor bestowed on players who receive a grade over 80 on coaches’ film review of the game.

But Beard doesn’t go easy on himself.

After saying last week he would give himself a “C” for the season despite appearing in every game, last Saturday’s performance barely improved that mark.

“It’s probably at a C-plus now,” he said. “I’m a tough grader.”

While Beard might be reticent to give himself credit, others weren’t as restrained. Freshman right tackle John Theus was impressed with his teammate’s initial start.

“Mark did really well,” Theus said. “He’s really worked hard to get himself into that position. He took advantage of the opportunity he had.”

Even before last Saturday, Beard had caught the eye of coach Mark Richt. Richt acknowledged injuries to other offensive lineman, right guard Chris Burnette specifically, played a part in Beard’s extensive action. But Richt said the junior college transfer has earned playing time.

“I’m glad he’s getting opportunities to play and the more he plays, the more he’ll get comfortable,” Richt said. “He’s a very good athlete, he’s strong. He’s everything we thought he was athletically. It’s just a matter of learning and getting comfortable.”

Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern could provide Beard’s first start at Sanford Stadium. While kickoff is still four days away, he has already let himself imagine what it would it feel like to run through the tunnel and hear his name announced as a starter.

“That’d be a great moment,” he said. “I think that’s something everybody looks forward to, seeing their name on that starting list and seeing their picture up there on the Sanford Stadium scoreboard. That’ll feel good.”

Theus no longer feels like first-year player

Ten games into the season, Theus has been told one excuse is no longer valid: using his freshman designation as a cover for his mistakes.

“I’m not a freshman anymore,” he said. “Coach Friend started telling me that a few weeks ago. … I feel more and more comfortable within the offense and with the calls. I sure feel more comfortable than I did the first day of camp, that’s for dang sure.”

Just not comfortable enough to correct any of his more experienced teammates on the offensive line — yet. More often than not, Theus said, it’s the other way around.

“If someone makes a call next to me, I’m very confident that’s the right call,” he said. “If there is something I’m not sure about, I (usually) have enough time to say, ‘Hey, I thought it was this.’ And then most of the time, it’s me that’s wrong, and then they’ll explain it to me.”

Theus said his fellow linemen challenged each other last week, wanting to atone for their performance against Ole Miss, when they allowed the Rebels to tally five sacks in the first half. The unit responded last Saturday, as Auburn didn’t notch a sack while Georgia rolled up 38 points and 497 yards of total offense.

“We knew as an offensive line we had to answer the bell,” Theus said. “It was our challenge as a line to do that, without a doubt. I think we answered it.”

Taking stock of the line’s overall play this season was a much tougher task for Theus. He didn’t end up rendering his take, but felt it was too soon to be handing out grades, anyway.

“The season’s not over yet. We’ve still got some more weeks left,” he said. “We’ve just got to keep going with that goal of improvement. As far as a grade, I’m not sure, but I think we’ve gotten better each week. That’s one of the things we really focus on.”

Bulldogs switch things up for practice, go full pads

Georgia practiced in full pads Monday, a change of pace from its normal routine.

“I heard rumors throughout the day from the guys that we might be doing that, just because of teams like (Georgia) Tech that run this kind of offense,” Theus said. “So I was hoping it wasn’t true, but it was true.”

Theus followed it up by saying he felt it was a “better Monday practice than we normally have.”

Richt echoed Theus’ sentiment, saying players “worked hard” and were “zeroed in on the task at hand.” Given the triple-option offense Georgia Southern runs, Richt said it was imperative his team prepare accordingly for a scheme it doesn’t face often. He believed Monday’s practice got the the Bulldogs heading in the right direction.

“Our focus this week will be completely on Georgia Southern, not on any other teams and not on the game in Atlanta,” Richt told UGA Sports Communications. “We know that we have a challenge on our hands against Georgia Southern, especially from a defensive standpoint. It is critical that we have a great week of scout-team work. We have to really dial in on our assignments and our fundamentals.”

Injury report

Burnette and outside linebacker Chase Vasser both sat out the full-pads practice Monday with left shoulder injuries. Beard said Burnette has stayed in high spirits despite the injury he suffered against Ole Miss two weeks ago. “Every time I see Chris, he’s in a good mood,” Beard said.

If Theus is no longer “a freshman” then tell him to cut out the false start penalties. Enough already!!

When the reporter asked Saban about his decision to pass when they were first down on the 6. Saban said ” If I had run the ball you all would be asking me why I didn’t pass”. This is the first time I have seen Saban make a rookie mistake, really a dumb mistake. It is hard for a man that usually doesn’t make really dumb mistakes to admit it when he makes one.
The best Offensive line in football and you don’t have faith in their ability to be able to get 6 yards if you ran 4 straight plays. I would have call time out and brought the offensive line to the side line and said ” Men we are going to run 4 straight plays , either we win or lose the game right here, now let’s see how big of holes you can open up. ” It wouldn’t have taken 4 plays for Alabama to score.

I thought the entire offensive line did well on Saturday, and the Auburn defensive line was the major challenge of the game. Beard has worked his way to playing time and the injury caused him to get even more. It’s not unusual for a new player to need a few games to get adjusted, but he’s an SEC tackle. With one more year of eligibility, it’s good to see him coming on.

Ward is a redshirt freshman and has added almost 25 lbs according to reports. He has played in about half the games this year. I don’t see the concern. I expect to see more of him next year as he continues to gain knowledge and strength.

Well the coaches are surprised again. Beard is really good. They apparently didn’t know that or he wouldn’t have been sitting. Last week they discovered that Zander can play. They could help themselves by using blowout games to build depth. But that won’t work either if you don’t continue to run your regular offense so you can evaluate personnel in game conditions.

Yeah BIG MIKE, your right, having the QB take a three step drop, stop, put the ball in the “Tailbacks” gut, have him run up the middle is a much better option than giving the back a running start and using his skill to pick the hole he wants to run to. Glad we have people of your intelligence level to help us do our thinking.

I like the focus of this team right now. Our coaches have done a good job the last couple years keeping perspective. I’m extremely thankful that they are the coaches, and not the idiotic, loud 1% of the fans that post useless rants. Why didn’t they become college football coaches again?

Has anyone thought of this scenario:

What if ALL 3 remaining undefeateds lose a game, and UGA wins out.

Does that mean we face UF in a rematch in Miami?

Don’t laugh – they are right behind us and the next 1-loss team is FSU – which UF would have to hand it’s 2nd loss.

UF has strength of schedule on their side over ND, K-St and Oregon.

I know the “experts” will disagree, but these are the same “experts” that had Bama in the National Title game 2 weeks ago, and a month ago said Geno Smith had the Heisman sewn up.

All three have games they can lose on their schedule.

Naysayers spare the “UGA is gonna get blown out by Bama” crap, it’s a fair question and a scenario that could happen.

Theus…….why is it that every sack Murray takes, Theus is usually standing there watching what he just missed? I’m glad he’s more comfortable but seriously, just the other day I was going to post something like “Is Theus REALLY the best we have?”. Nothing against him personally and I guess next year he’ll get it but no, he is still a Freshman and plays like one.

Tough conference, glad we get a break. Schedule was tough too! played 2 top 10 teams. Caught Auburn in an off year. The dog defense looks the best it has looked since Erk left. We have had some good ones, but when this one plays together, they are tough, and I don’t think they can be beaten for long. We will see.

Bama’s offense is nothing like UGA’s. The Tide is 71st in passing, 30th in rushing. The Dawgs are 38th in passing, 31st in rushing. Big difference is Bama’s passing offense. UGA has the balance that teams would like to have, while the Tide is still working on that. Their only advantage in the passing game is INTs, and Murray has improved greatly. McCarron has thrown 5 fewer INTs, but 4 fewer TDs. He’s tossed only 37 fewer passes than Murray, but has 500 fewer yards. Both complete about 66% of their passes, but McCarron’s arm apparently isn’t as strong as Murray’s. Should Bama get past Auburn (and THAT will be the most emotional game of the year for the Tigers/War Eagles/Plainsman), we should have an interesting SECCG. But since a UGA victory over the Tide won’t really help our bowl hopes, I kind of hope Auburn beats them. The fans are so arrogant they act like the A&M game shouldn’t count, just like the behave as if the SEC title is a birthright. I’d like to see Bama in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. A dash of humility is a sorely needed ingredient in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama, got a break in THEIR SEC schedule, too, when you really think about it. They were able to avoid UGA, UF, and South Carolina, the 3 top teams in the East Division of the conference. Texas A&M replaced Arkansas in the West’s top 3 Western Division teams, but Mississippi State is on par with Vanderbilt, Ole Miss is the equivalent of Missouri, and Auburn and Kentucky are both cellar-dwellers of the West and East, respectively. Arkansas and UT share similar records, too. The East has 25 conference losses – the West has 23. The 4 bowl-eligible teams in the East have 7 conference losses, and the 4 bowl-eligible teams in the West have 8 losses. Both have 6 f 7 teams that remain in contention to become bowl-eligible. All in all, the balance between the two divisions is very similar, and neither SEC Division Champion can say that their side of the conference was very much, if at all, tougher than the other Division Champion.

Fellow Dawgs the O-line is starting to jell, I have watched them since the first game as they have gotten accustomed to playing with each other they are making fewer mental mistakes. This has resulted in more consistency in all phases of the offense while keeping our defense off the field allowing them to be fresher and consequently stronger in games and more dominant. Being able to run the football with the ability to to take it to the house as Marshal did and as Gurley had a long run as well and short passes eat up clock and wears the other teams defense dowm. The whole offensive line had a very good game against Auburn’s front seven which has been pointed out was the strength of their team and one of the better front sevens in the SEC.

Having said this they do need to continue to work on some things such as stunts and be able to adjust on the fly. With Beard and Long starting to play up to their potentials it does build depth and breeds a desire for others to step up their play to get more actual game experience i.e. Ward, DeBell and others etc. It seems that Coach Friend is a pretty good offensive line coach afterall when given guys who are truly talented not only physically but mentally as well.

guys tide roll is not an Alabama fan. Our line has performed well except the SC game and lets be real no one showed up that game. We have moved the ball protected Murray and won the East with a line that lost 3 players to the NFL. In addition, we are poised to run the table and finish top 5 in the country. As was pointed out, anything can happen on Saturday in the SEC!
