Notes from Mark Richt’s conference call

A few notes from Mark Richt’s Sunday evening conference call:

  • Asked if he plans to discuss with his players the possibility that Georgia could be in the BCS title game picture if it wins out (and gets some considerable help): “Quite frankly, we’re not doing that right now. We know we’re playing in Atlanta (the SEC Championship game). We know that’s settled right now. But we know there’s a lot of work in the meantime, which is the job of getting better on a daily basis. … We know we’ve got some work to do as far as playing Georgia Southern this week, too. That’s really where we’ve got to be thinking and keeping our minds. Because if you don’t do that, all that other stuff doesn’t mean much.”
  • On the challenge of defending against the triple option, which Georgia’s next two opponents (Georgia Southern on Saturday, Georgia Tech on Nov. 24) run: “We’re going to play defense so completely different than how we’ve been playing it all year long. Everything changes. The alignments change; the assignments change;  the type of block you’re dealing with changes; and it’s very, very, very difficult to simulate in practice. … So here you go in the middle of a game, and you’re trying to not only adjust to what they’re doing schematically, you’re also adjusting to how well they do it.”
  • Asked if the coaches will make sure that Georgia’s defensive players watch film of Georgia Southern’s triple-option offense against Alabama last season (Georgia Southern had 302 yards rushing in a 45-21 loss to the Crimson Tide): “There’s no doubt about that, because our defenses are very similar in how they line up and how they try to scheme things.  So I don’t think there’s any doubt that will be the best film by far for us to show our defense.”
  • Richt said “we don’t know yet” whether offensive lineman Chris Burnette will be able to play this week. He didn’t make the trip to Auburn because of a shoulder injury suffered the week before.
  • On the play of the offensive line vs. Auburn: “I thought our line blocked extremely well. There were a few times here and there they didn’t get the job done quite right, but for the most part we ran the ball well, blocked well in the run game. … The pass (protection) overall was good. Murray had time to throw the ball most of the time. There were a few times he got pressured or hit early on in the first half, which we didn’t like, but they got it squared away in the second half.”
  • Richt said he thinks kicker Marshall Morgan and punter Collin Barber — both freshmen — “are beginning to feel a little bit more comfortable. It’s good, because it’s not easy to be  true freshmen and get thrown into those roles.”
  • Richt praised the play of  wide receiver Chris Conley, who “stepped in real nicely” to help fill the void left by Marlon Brown’s season-ending knee injury.  Conley caught four passes for 32 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown pass to start the night’s scoring.  “We had confidence in him going in, but we even have more  confidence now that he’s ready to make plays,” Richt said. “That was a tremendous catch, I thought, for that first touchdown. It easily could have been dropped. … It was a great start for the night.”

Go Dawgs! Southern is a perfect tune up for tech. Our AD planned this. Kudos. We get a scrimmage against the option before tech rolls in.

GO DAWGS!!!!!!!! 1 game at a time! Gives me even more confidence to know we’ll basically have been prepping for Tech. Take care of business, and we have got a real gut shot straight draw chance at this!

UGa get NO respect….. ESPN started pushing for Alabama in the polls right after they were beat by A&M. I hope our team stays focused for the next two games, then takes care of Alabama.

I think Morgan should be congratulated. He made every extra point attempt and his field goal attempt. Hopefully, he’s coming around to where these won’t continue to be issues anymore. I was proud of him for doing his job.

Triple option scares me a little, but we should be fine if everyone keeps to their assignments. Looking for another big run game from Gurley and Marshall.

With our disaster in Columbia, I don’t think we have a chance to play in the BCS game this year. It would take an absolute miracle! Still it’s been a good season and how we finish it could have HUGE implications for recruiting this year and next . . . especially against Saban. Some pretty big fish are still on the fence and we need to reel them in!

Hopefully the tune-up for Tech will not make us overconfident. We all know how that went 4 years ago, and Tech seems to have turned a corner. Get ready, Dawgs!

Im good friends with GSU starting QB Jerick McKinnon. They are a very good team. They have tremendous athletes. If UGA is intense and plays to their gameplan this could be a 45-17 type of game. If uga comes out flat and non schalant, if could be something like 35-21. Just becuz GSU almost runs on every play, it will be tiring, and it will tough. But uga should impose its will.

I was amused to see Gator fans react to Saturday, instead of “holy crap we almost lost to Louisiana Lafayette” it was “we beat A&M and they beat Alabama, we rule!”

Is there is a Punt/ KO squad in the league playing much better in the past few weeks than Georgia?

November 12th, 2012
9:19 am

Congrats to Barber for a good job of punting Saturday night. Average was over 45 yards on five punts, although the game was in hand before he was ever called on.

November 12th, 2012

Not just distance. He’s exceeded over 45 yrds the past month. But also high and accurate. He’s put a half dozen inside the 10 recently, and only 4 punt out of his last 22 has there even been a return attempted. He’s getting them high, (which hurt his average early in the year) and longer now, and the converage guys are doing an excellent job getting down there under them.

Take away that one long return against SC, and this squad’s numbers are right there with the rest of them.

and The KO coverage guys are tackling the best I have seen them in, as many years as I can remember.

UGA lost by such a big margin to S.C…….. that is why Bummer is still rated ahead of them for now. Doesn’t matter because they will settle whose best in SEC champ game. Conley is a good WR and he is starting material. Unfortunately with the loss of Marlon Brown and Michael Bennett the depth is pretty much depleted and UGA can not afford another injury at WR.

November 12th, 2012

UGA’s OL is still the vulnerable area of the team. Murrray got hit several times against Aubarn. Can’t afford to lose Murray for sure.

Some things we’ve learned the last few weeks. As always, Richt’s teams jell and get better as the season goes on. Don’t know if Auburn was that bad, but I’m thinking Georgia could of scored on every possession Saturday and made it ugly. And as usual, Carolina will have to buy a ticket to see the SECCG, as they lost to a very average LSU and Florida team. They killed the Dawgs for some reason.
would like some regulars on here to discuss what they think the defensive starting 11 will look like next year? If they happen to play well, they really could be called the “no name defense”.

JB below is what I think the starting D will look like next year:

DE- Ray Drew or Mike Thorton and Garrison Smith
NT- Chris Mayes or Kwame Geathers
OLB- Jordan Jenkins and Josh Dawson or TJ Stripling
ILB- Amarlo Herrea and Ramik Wilson
SS- Josh Harvey Clemmons, Corey Moore, or Tray Matthews
FS- Shaq Fluker and or Tray
CB- Damian Swann, Steven Nelson, Shaq Wiggins
CB- Sheldon Dawson, Steven Nelson, Shaq Wiggins, Devin Bowman

44…………Must be this Tech’ies SAT score……….Or the times he’s be turned down for a date……..or the number of times he’s pleasured himself since Tech scored 68 on a nothing defense. Could be lot’s of options on ole 44.

I hope AU fans remember that Richt declined a roughing the kicker penalty which is an auto first down. He was trying to not run up the score.. Not many coaches would do that..Saban wont. Not one AU fan has acknowledged that….Go Dawgs.

I rather be blown out on the road than get blown out at home….. prevent almost gave the tide 2 TD’s at the end and remember they missed extra points and field goals…. down 20-0 at home means you got blown out too, I dont care what the final was…

Dwagturds just don’t seem to get it. UGA is never going to be the BCS champion while Mark Richt is in Athens. Only the very top coaches ever win at that level, not 3rd rate wannabes like Richt, whose biggest concern is the fat paycheck he collects every month.

Notice that UGA had an extremely easy SEC scheduled then they scehdule a team like Ga Southern to get ready for Georgia Tech. They realy should in no way have a shot at a national titltle game. They had two tough gaems and split them….Tech needs to find some defense or they will loose the next two adn how will that look on UGA resume.

If 2 of the 3 undefeated teams lose, and GA beats AL in SEC game….realize alot of things have to break right….and GA gets to play in and wins the BCS Championship game…would this this be first time in history that a National Champion had a blowout loss in its record?

I can’t think of another National Champion where the loss(es) were not at least competitive games.
