BCS standings: Kansas State No. 1, SEC out of top 3, Georgia still behind Bama at No. 5

The SEC, which has won college football’s past six national championships, will be shut out of this season’s title game if the latest Bowl Championship Series standings hold up.

Alabama’s loss to Texas A&M on Saturday dropped the Crimson Tide from No. 1 to No. 4 in the BCS standings, behind three undefeated teams — No. 1 Kansas State, No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Notre Dame — and ahead of No. 5 Georgia.

The top two teams in the final BCS standings, which will be released Dec. 2, meet for the national title Jan. 7 in Miami.

The latest standings, released Sunday night, hardly shut the door to the title game for the SEC. But for an SEC team to get there at this point apparently would require that two of the top three teams, all of which are 10-0, lose a game in the next few weeks.

If that happens, and if Georgia and Alabama win their final two regular-season games to carry 11-1 records into the SEC Championship game, the winner of the Dec. 1 game in the Georgia Dome could move into the BCS top two.

Georgia clinched an SEC title game berth by routing Auburn on Saturday. Alabama will be the Bulldogs’ opponent if the Crimson Tide beats Auburn on Nov. 24.

Alabama’s loss to A&M left the SEC without an undefeated team. Six one- or two-loss SEC teams are ranked Nos. 4 through 9 in this week’s BCS standings: Alabama (9-1), Georgia (9-1), Florida (9-1), LSU (8-2), Texas A&M (8-2) and South Carolina (8-2) in that order.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said he won’t dwell on scenarios that might or might not put the Bulldogs in the national title game.

“I’m not going to sit there and say, ‘If this, if that,’” Richt said. “We just know if we can keep winning, there’s a chance. But there will be who-knows-how-many teams thinking they still have a chance.”

If not Richt, plenty of other folks will be looking at the various permutations that could rearrange the BCS standings.

The three unbeaten teams atop the standings, all of which moved up one spot from last week, have some challenging games left on their regular-season schedules.

Kansas State has Big 12 games left against Baylor and Texas (No. 15 BCS). Oregon still must get by Stanford (No. 13), Oregon State (No. 16) and the Pac-12 Championship game. Notre Dame has games left against Wake Forest and USC (No. 18)

“If we win out,” Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray said, “who knows what happens, who might lose? But we can’t worry about that stuff.”

The BCS standings include three components that count one-third each: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls.

Georgia is No. 4 in this week’s USA Today poll (up from No. 5 last week), No. 5 in the Harris poll (same as last week) and No. 6 in the computers (same as last week). Overall, the Bulldogs’ No. 5 position is the same as last week.

Alabama, No. 1 across the board last week, fell to No. 5 in USA Today, No. 4 in Harris and No. 5 in the computers.

Oregon is No. 1 in the USA Today and Harris polls but trails Kansas State in the BCS standings because of the computers, which rank the Ducks No. 4 and the Wildcats No. 2 (behind Notre Dame).

Also, in this week’s Associated Press poll, which is not part of the BCS formula, Alabama is No. 4 and Georgia No. 5. Oregon is AP’s No. 1.

Nothing matters–nothing–but one-win-at-a-time.
1. Beat Georgia Southern.
2. Beat Georgia Tech.
3. Beat Alabama.

IF we beat Bama, two of the top three teams will have to lose a game for us to have a shot at the tile game.

That’s the only scenario that matters.

ANTI-UGA bias continues.

UGA is one of ONLY three BCS teams to be ranked in the top 20 in scoring on offense AND defense, it’s a complete TEAM.

Notre Dame? 74th in scoring, beat 5 teams by 7 or less points.

Oregon? 54th in defense total yards.

UGA will face THREE TOP 5 TEAMS
Oregon 0
K St 1
Notre Dame 1
UGA 3

SEC has 5 teams ranked in the top 10
Notre Dame’s conference has 1
K St’s has 1
Oregon’s has 2.

Voters have lost their heads.

20-17 over Purdue
17-14 over BYU
13-6 over Mich
20-13 in OT over Stanford
29-26 in 3 OT’s over Pitt

Notre Dame isn’t a top 10 ranked team.

UGA is ranked in the top 40 RUSH AND PASS offense.

Notre Dame NEITHER. When they face an offense like UGA or Bama they’ll fall apart.

Oregon only RUSH. When they face a defense like Bama or UGA that can dstop the run, they’re 1 dimensional on offense.

UGA and Bama can both PASS AND RUSH.

I been watching these top teams the entire season. Truth be told K-State doesn’t impress me their qb Klein is overrated. He is no runner but runs all over sorry Big 12 teams. He will be contained and look average against top Sec defenses. ND is pretty good on D but I don’t believe their offense can score enough to keep up with the other top 5 teams. USC should handle them in LA. Oregon offense is the truth but we have seen this same story the past 3 to 4 years. Their defense can’t stop nobody! They will go to the NC game and play hopefully play a physical GA defense or Alabama Defense and get whipped upfront on both sides if the ball. Speaking of UGA. I think they are the most balance team in the country. The have a tough Defense who is playing great right now and a offense that will score on u. Alabama D is young and not experience. They were finally tested against a exploaive texas a&m offense. Ala QB Mccarens is average and is only a game manager. UGA and Ala are headed in two different directions at thia point in the season. Oregon vs. UGA in the NC!

At some point you have to ask yourself how Georgia would have fared if they had played this schedule during September and October:

Navy (Buffalo)
Purdue (Missouri)
Michigan State* (Fla. Atlantic)
Michigan (Vanderbilt)
Miami (Tennessee)
Stanford (South Carolina)
BYU (Kentucky)
Oklahoma* (Florida)

* away game

If it is 8-0, Georgia is probably equal to Notre Dame up to that point.

Notre Dame & bama are both also in top 5.

Oregon? #74 in 4th quarter points allowed. Below average.

AJ… Oregon and K State have been playing their 2nd and 3rd string in the 4th quarter… What planet are you on?

Before everybody gets all excited and starts trying to ’statistically’ prove that Georgia belongs in the conversation, lets see if we can make sure to remember to show up against Ga Southern and Georgia Tech. Lets see if we can get 2 more wins and avoid getting any key players hurt before the dome….

Then, lets see if we can beat Alabama for the SEC Title.

Then lets see what the situation is at that point with all the other teams. Then get out your stat sheet.

Just sayin… I believe in the Dawgs, but we got a lotta football left to play this season.

What happened to “if u lose u better do it early concept?” I just think it is not fair when ALA only drops 3 spots getting beat by a #15 at home to give them 1 loss like us and they don’t play anyone either. We dropped 9 spots for losing on the road to a #8 team. My argument is that we should be ahead of Bama based on us winning several weeks in grand fashion and they should be 8-2.

56-20 W against Fla. Atlantic (3-7 in Sunbelt)
48-3 W against Vandy (6-4 wins against Presbyterian, Mizzou, ,Auburn, Mass, KY, and Ole Miss)
51-44 W against 2-6 Tennessee
7-35 L against SC (8-2)
29-24 W against Kentucky (1-9)

37-10 W against Ole Miss (5-5)
38-0 W against Auburn (2-8 with wins against New Mexico State and OT win against La. Monroe)
Face non BCS Ga Southern
Face Ga Tech (5-5)

What’s this about strength of schedule? 2-1 against the only 3 teams on the schedule that have winning records (and one of them is Vandy). So you have to beat a FCS team and Tech, who’s having a crappy year. Big woop. Maybe UGA can swing it where they’ll have a season when they’ll face no teams with winning records and take it all.

Where do you get all these rankings? Who gives a rat’s ass about who is ranked where on 3rd quarter points allowed after a TV timeout? I would think it more important to consider how you get beaten by 35 points against S. Carolina. And, what 3 top 5 teams are you talking about? Their ONLY notable win was over a questionably ranked Florida team. UGA has the 83rd toughest ranked schedule and you are spouting off on Notre Dame’s schedule? And, another thing, don’t use Bama and UGA in the same sentence much less imply them equal.

Wow, my tech friends on here pumping their chests pretty proudly this morning. The schedule is what it is. It’s set up years in advance. As for the OOC, if UGA’s OOC is to be stronger tech needs to field a much better team or drop them all together. A weak schedule will not be spoken of next year.

Where’s all the Bama people this morning. Roll Tide, Ain’t nothing stopping the tide(or something like that) etc……. I still think the Dawgs will lose the SEC CG, but maybe by not as much as I first anticipated. It’s tough to stay undefeated in the SEC. Though I do believe that Bama thought A&M was going to roll over and bow to them in the 1st quarter. That 20-0 score had everyone surprised but A&M. I congratulate A&M on a well played game and hanging tough on the road.

If the Dawgs win in the Dome then that problem will take care of itself.I’ve been saying ever since Bama

Guys, If Oregon and Notre Dame (who isnt that good) play in the SEC they lose at least 2-3 games a year, just my opinion. I do not think UGA should play for an NC this year…they simply do not deserve it. And lets be honest, Oregon would beat the poo out of us. If the South Carolina game was respectable (and it wasnt) maybe my opinion changes, but NC caliber teams do not show up and look like that. I do think we will be competitive with Bama, I guess we will all find out wont we. We better watch our a*ses against GT. They are scoring lots of points.

I think A&M is one maybe the best team in the Country. I was highly impressed when they played Florida. I would rather play anyone other than A&M. Alabama just came off the game against LSU to face A&M; that is tough to do. Our biggest problem is getting up mentally each week, we have the talent although I sure do miss Bennett!

Tech fan,
ALL of your posts are soooooo stupid!!! GT may be playing in the ACC championship game with a 6-6 record and could finish the year at 6-8 if they lose the championship game and bowl which seems to happen frequently. Says a lot about the ACC doesn’t it???

How is it that Alabama, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech fans are on here talking smack? Alabama lost to Texas A&M…Texas A&M was not ranked as high as South Carolina when South Carolina handed Georgia their behinds. Carolina then actually showed that they were the most over-rated team in the East by losing 2 games straight during a time when all the media was saying that “they are the team to beat in the NCAA this year and could take it all the way”. And then these Tech nerds get on here and try to make an SEC argument when they play in the ACC (Athletically Challenged Conference)…If you’re not a Georgia fan, you probably shouldn’t blog on here today…and give Florida fans credit – they’re not talking garbage like the rest of you…I will say, also, it’s nice to see the Bama fans are still keeping their mouths shut. Exposed with no national championship to play for. Will they beat Georgia? Probably. They’re expected to. But it appears that their secondary is not what it was initially defined as. The last 2 weeks have shown kinks in the armor. They are coming down off of a high…and Georgia, at this point, appears to be looking better. Guess we’ll have to wait and see…

CDawg, you are exactly right..NOBODY is talking about Bennett. I think that is one of the reasons (Clowney was another) we laid an offensive egg against SC. Lets see,

Ole Miss-SEC
Florida-SEC
Auburn-SEC
Tennessee-SEC

Where were all these UGA schedule critcs in 2008 when we were rated having the roughest schedule in the nation. FL, SC, Bama, LSU, Ariz.St.
It’s bad when these so called SEC fans don’t know that its because of schedule rotation that teams in opposite divisons don’t play ever year. Anyone notice that Florida didn’t play Alabama or Auburn this year? SC didn’t play Bama or Mississippi St. Mark Richt doesn’t make the schdeules.

In 2008, voters went for 13-1 Florida over 13-0 Utah?

But in 2012, with the SEC having 6 teams ranked in the top 10 right now, the best conference by a mile, no 1 loss SEC team is ahead of Kansas State, Oregon, or Notre Dame?

What changed since 2006 & 2008? Why doesn’t UGA get the same standard applied as Urban Meyer got in 2006 & 2008 with his 1 loss teams in the midst of 2 undefeated teams Boise St n 2006, and Utah in 2008?

I agree with Lamar’s previous comments. What, if anything, can Georgia do to move ahead of Alabama in the polls? Looks like even IF they beat Alabama in the SECCG, Alabama would STILL be ranked above them! Alabama loses AT HOME to a lower ranked opponent, and only falls three spots. Georgia, on the other hand, SHUTS OUT an opponent ON THE ROAD, and doesn’t move at all! Let’s face it Dawg fans, this is a beauty contest, and we are the UGLY girl in it!

AJ, put the pipe down and slowly back away…. I am as big a Dawg fan as anyone but first we have 3 games left, lets worry about those.
IF we win out, the only way we go to NCG is if 2 of the 3 unbeatens lose. You do not put a team that has lost (and lost 35-7 at that) ahead of an unbeaten from a major conference (big east and possibly acc dont count). Now, you want to talk about how ND barely won some games… well we barely beat UK (winless in conference), beat UT by 7 (arent they winless in conference as well ?), let Buffalo and Fla Atlantic put up huge offensive numbers and some points. Lets face it – we did it to ourselves and we might have to pay the price for that. Of course if we lose to Bama its a moot point, and trust me that will be a very hard game to win.

DAWGS have had years with tougher schedules. This is not one of them. But it is still good to be where they are at this point in the season. “If we can win out…” That’s the key. And Richt is constantly “one game at a time” focused. They can’t do anything about the schedule nor what’s happened before. One game at a time has got to be the focus.

It doesn’t matter whether we’re 1 spot ahead or behind Bama, we will have to face them in a head to head match up anyway – unless they choke against Auburn of course.

The positioning also helps secure the winner of the game goes to the BCS championship game should 2 of the 3 remaining unbeatens slip up, which there is a very good chance that could happen.

ND won’t have the benefit of 6 inch grass and doesn’t have the speed on defense to hang with USC, so that will be one down.

Kansas St will have their hands full with Baylor this week and their offense, should be a fun game to watch, but the edge goes to KSt’s defense, however they will have to turn right around and play a hot Texas Team that CAN beat them.

Oregon is the least likely of the 3 to lose another game, however a rematch against USC could be very interesting. USC is not as far away from being undefeated as some might think. They lost a shootout to Oregon by 11pts, @Arizona by 3, and @Stanford by 7.

A LOT of football left to be played. This thing is FAR from decided.

Dawgs just keep winning and see what happens!

Combined SEC record of the 6 teams the Pups beat other than Florida: 8-32.
Even factoring in Florida and USC (who pounded the Pups) to the schedule, it’s 21-35.
This is one of the easiest schedules in SEC history. That’s not to pick on Georgia. It’s just a fact.
The bottom line is: you played two good teams this year. One beat you like a rented donkey, and you barely beat the other one while they turned the ball over 6 times.
Alabama will not turn the ball over 6 times and you won’t run the ball against them. Aaron Murray will shrink into nothingness as he does whenever he plays a stout defense and you will go back to a Florida bowl
One interesting side note, though – does it hurt Georgia playing 2 option teams in a row before they have to play Alabama in the SEC championship?

Oregon Notre Dame and K St have beat the system. Combined ZERO wins against a current top 10 team, and all are ranked in top 3. How to rig the BCS system? Don’t schedule a team that will finish in the top 10, and go undefeated against a bunch of NON top 10 teams. Try and play in a conference that has NO OTHER TEAMS THAT WILL FINISH IN THE TOP 10 instead of the SEC which has SIX top 10 ranked teams.

How to RIG the BCS in 4 Easy Steps:
1- You do not get rewarded for having BOTH a top 25 scoring offense and defense. Oregon doesn’t play defense, Notre Dame can’t play offense–UGA is top 25 in BOTH–a COMPLETE TEAM, that’s NOT what the BCS is looking for, better to be 1 dimensional like Oregon or Notre Dame)
2- You get rewarded for having ZERO wins against a current top 10 team
3- you get rewarded for playing in a conference with ZERO other current top 10 teams
4- Break precedent, if Meyer won in 2006 & 2008 with 1 loss, and Saban won in 2003 & 2011 with 1 loss, if Miles won in 2007 with 2 losses, change the rules, so the SEC can’t get back in with a 1 loss or 2 loss team.

UGA fans complaining about strength of schedule really don’t have much of an argument. Sure UGA has played two teams ranked in the top 10 but they happened to get trucked by one of them and their schedule outside of those two games has been a cakewalk. When you combine all of UGA’s opponent’s wins and losses you get 44-54. That’s worse than all the other teams in the discussion.

It almost seems like UGA fans got so used to losing to Florida that now when they actually beat them they feel they deserve great things.

I’m rooting for ND, Oregon, and KS each to lose 1 of their remaining games. Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth as the BCS explodes trying to rig up a national championship game?

As for Alabama staying ahead of the Dogs, that’s the correct call. Dogs got blown out & Bama’s only loss was close. When you lose shouldn’t matter, and newer polls seem to more accurately capture this.

For the record…I’m a Tech grad & fan with lots of UGA friends. As inconsistent as we’ve been playing this year, it’s not going to be particularly close. UGA 38 – Tech 17

I sympathize with my friends Blackout, Bear, Crimson this and Crimson that, plus many other class Bama posters because so many will drill us on how great it is that Bama lost.

Just remember LSU played in the 2007 MNC game with 2 losses but times are changing and now Bama must wait for some outside help just like UGA has done in recent years. This year could well be the end of and extended run of SEC MNCs but I fully believe Bama could beat ANY team in the nation. How funny to read UGA fans talk national title when not even one of top 2 teams in division. A team that lay down when challenged (see Oct 6, 2012) ain’t no national title contender.
___________________

So UGA’s the East Division winner again–yet only the third-best team in the division? Yeah, you make a lot of sense.

And how did your team perform “when challenged”? That’s right, you LOST them both–and that’s exactly why you’ll be nothing more than spectators yet again for the SECCG.

UGA should rest the defensive starters and start preparing for Alabama NOW.

Dump 70 points on Georgia Tech.

Lead the BCS in offensive scoring.

Mess up the computers.

the pups ain’t going no where until they start playing an SEC schedule . . . .

You should know that the SEC schedule is not the real issue; it’s the OOC schedule–and UGA’s usually is pathetic by any measure. Next year, we upgrade some with Clemson. Long overdue.

So, in 2006, voters went for 13-1 Florida over 13-0 Boise St?
In 2008, voters went for 13-1 Florida over 13-0 Utah?
But in 2012, with the SEC having 6 teams ranked in the top 10 right now, the best conference by a mile, no 1 loss SEC team is ahead of Kansas State, Oregon, or Notre Dame?
What changed since 2006 & 2008? Why doesn’t UGA get the same standard applied as Urban Meyer got in 2006 & 2008 with his 1 loss teams in the midst of 2 undefeated teams Boise St n 2006, and Utah in 2008?
_____________________

The answer should be obvious. Boise and Utah played in weak, non-BCS conferences with traditionally soft schedules (kinda like UGA’s OOC schedules most years).

I think UGA’s best plan

IS RUN UP THE SCORE ON OFFENSE, TRY AND GET TO 100 POINTS BOTH OF THE LAST TWO GAMES

AND REST THE DEFENSIVE STARTERS.

MAKE THE COMPUTERS THINK YOU’RE NUMBER ONE IN BOTH

1) AVERAGE MARGIN OF VICTORY
2) SCORING OFFENSE

LET’S CALL IT THE “CHIP KELLY PLAN”

BECAUSE THAT WILL SKEW THE AVERAGE MARGIN OF VICTORY

AND GEORGIA WILL FINISH #1 IN BCS IN OFFENSIVE SCORING.

AND THE COMPUTER WILL THEN RANK YOU #1.

What’s UGLY is the blatant bias in your analogy. You’ve carefully pointed out how Bama lost to a “lower ranked” opponent, but failed to mention its ranking (15). Then you slyly omit ANY mention of ranking with respect to UGA’s opponent, Auburn, which obviously is one of the sorriest teams in D-1 football this year.

An undefeated and No. 1-ranked Bama would’ve been a MUCH better thing. A win over that Bama team would’ve meant UGA beat Nos. 1 AND 2. Not many teams over the years can make that claim. The BCS is stupid, was stupid, and has always been a stupid invention of the same kind of people who are FM radio consultants….or worse, accountants, or worse yet, lawyers. The big ten (or twelve, or whatever) got together with NBC and Notre Dame, and they figured out how to jigger the whole thing. If you cannot win on a level playing field, then change the field, and that’s what they did. Hey, it’s not my fault they say; blame it on the machine. We would never have even a hint of a playoff if somebody hadn’t transfused the old geezers up in Columbus, Ohio or South Bend, slapped them a couple of times to come around, and made them realize that, hey, the trophy case was full in 1954, but we can make a bucketful of money if we would only……Please! They don’t want the likes of GA Tech coming up there as they have done before and kick their behinds. You don’t really think that Alabama can’t whip two of the “top three” currently in the BCS standings? Right. You ain’t watchin em play. Oregon….that’s another story. Kansas State? Appalachian State plays them straight up. They don’t want to play us. We rattle their cage. Those guys can’t win fairly….ask Stanford.

The Bama loss hasn’t “really” hurt the SEC. It hurt Bama’s chances. If the conference doesn’t get a team in the BCSCG, it’s likely we don’t have a team worthy. The pundits expect perfection from the SEC and they usually get it, when they don’t, we’re on the outside looking in. Just the way things are. It’s a negative of playing in the nations strongest conference. The natural order probably demands another conference have a chance to win it without the SEC participating.

That said, yes I believe any of the SEC’s power teams would win the NC game if they played in it.

Any half-a$$ football fan knows UGA was setting up USCe for the kill. by laying back and letting Big Spur and his Chikuns win big. UGA set USCe for the frying pan when USCe went to Fla. thinking they were a Big Time Football Team. You remember how that worked out for them!!!!!!!!!!!

Good question. A&M (with only 2 losses) has the tiebreaker over Bama, but LSU (2 losses) has the tiebreaker over A&M. Maybe somebody on here knows the tiebreaker scenario for determining the West Division champ should these three teams finish with the same SEC records?

Of course, the chance of Bama losing to Auburn ranks right up there with winning Powerball, so the question likely is moot.
