BCS standings: Kansas State No. 1, SEC out of top 3, Georgia still behind Bama at No. 5

The SEC, which has won college football’s past six national championships, will be shut out of this season’s title game if the latest Bowl Championship Series standings hold up.

Alabama’s loss to Texas A&M on Saturday dropped the Crimson Tide from No. 1 to No. 4 in the BCS standings, behind three undefeated teams — No. 1 Kansas State, No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Notre Dame — and ahead of No. 5 Georgia.

The top two teams in the final BCS standings, which will be released Dec. 2, meet for the national title Jan. 7 in Miami.

The latest standings, released Sunday night, hardly shut the door to the title game for the SEC. But for an SEC team to get there at this point apparently would require that two of the top three teams, all of which are 10-0, lose a game in the next few weeks.

If that happens, and if Georgia and Alabama win their final two regular-season games to carry 11-1 records into the SEC Championship game, the winner of the Dec. 1 game in the Georgia Dome could move into the BCS top two.

Georgia clinched an SEC title game berth by routing Auburn on Saturday. Alabama will be the Bulldogs’ opponent if the Crimson Tide beats Auburn on Nov. 24.

Alabama’s loss to A&M left the SEC without an undefeated team. Six one- or two-loss SEC teams are ranked Nos. 4 through 9 in this week’s BCS standings: Alabama (9-1), Georgia (9-1), Florida (9-1), LSU (8-2), Texas A&M (8-2) and South Carolina (8-2) in that order.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said he won’t dwell on scenarios that might or might not put the Bulldogs in the national title game.

“I’m not going to sit there and say, ‘If this, if that,’” Richt said. “We just know if we can keep winning, there’s a chance. But there will be who-knows-how-many teams thinking they still have a chance.”

If not Richt, plenty of other folks will be looking at the various permutations that could rearrange the BCS standings.

The three unbeaten teams atop the standings, all of which moved up one spot from last week, have some challenging games left on their regular-season schedules.

Kansas State has Big 12 games left against Baylor and Texas (No. 15 BCS). Oregon still must get by Stanford (No. 13), Oregon State (No. 16) and the Pac-12 Championship game. Notre Dame has games left against Wake Forest and USC (No. 18)

“If we win out,” Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray said, “who knows what happens, who might lose? But we can’t worry about that stuff.”

The BCS standings include three components that count one-third each: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls.

Georgia is No. 4 in this week’s USA Today poll (up from No. 5 last week), No. 5 in the Harris poll (same as last week) and No. 6 in the computers (same as last week). Overall, the Bulldogs’ No. 5 position is the same as last week.

Alabama, No. 1 across the board last week, fell to No. 5 in USA Today, No. 4 in Harris and No. 5 in the computers.

Oregon is No. 1 in the USA Today and Harris polls but trails Kansas State in the BCS standings because of the computers, which rank the Ducks No. 4 and the Wildcats No. 2 (behind Notre Dame).

Also, in this week’s Associated Press poll, which is not part of the BCS formula, Alabama is No. 4 and Georgia No. 5. Oregon is AP’s No. 1.

UGA fans complaining about strength of schedule really don’t have much of an argument. Sure UGA has played two teams ranked in the top 10 but they happened to get trucked by one of them and their schedule outside of those two games has been a cakewalk. When you combine all of UGA’s opponent’s wins and losses you get 44-54. That’s worse than all the other teams in the discussion.

It almost seems like UGA fans got so used to losing to Florida that now when they actually beat them they feel they deserve great things.

I’m rooting for ND, Oregon, and KS each to lose 1 of their remaining games. Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth as the BCS explodes trying to rig up a national championship game?

As for Alabama staying ahead of the Dogs, that’s the correct call. Dogs got blown out & Bama’s only loss was close. When you lose shouldn’t matter, and newer polls seem to more accurately capture this.

For the record…I’m a Tech grad & fan with lots of UGA friends. As inconsistent as we’ve been playing this year, it’s not going to be particularly close. UGA 38 – Tech 17

When UGA finishes the season, they will have faced three teams CURRENTLY RANKED IN THE TOP 10:
South Carolina
Florida
Alabama

No other team in the nation will have faced 3 current top 10 ranked teams, and won two out of three.

It’s the toughest schedule in the nation.

@ SEC Fan:

9-1 is 9-1 regardless of the name or performance of the teams but I’m happy to see some Bammy fans are still active on here!!!!!!!!!!!

NOBODY wins forever and that is what some of us Dawg fans have been saying all along so if you run off at the mouth like Many out-of-control Bammy fans(and now UGA fans are already beginning the same crap) did you won’t have as much CROW to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are still a large number of Bammy fans that are pretty damn classy and I enjoy bantering with them because you can learn a lot about people you have never met by how there conduct themselves on here.

My record on here is pretty shi- – - because I love to REALLY rattle the chains of certain know-it-alls, many of which post as Bammy fans but definitely are not. I send a bunch of BS but I never get into the “How great UGA is” or ” nobody will beat UGA” because I know one day it will comeback and bite me!!!

I sympathize with my friends Blackout, Bear, Crimson this and Crimson that, plus many other class Bama posters because so many will drill us on how great it is that Bama lost.

Just remember LSU played in the 2007 MNC game with 2 losses but times are changing and now Bama must wait for some outside help just like UGA has done in recent years. This year could well be the end of and extended run of SEC MNCs but I fully believe Bama could beat ANY team in the nation. That includes Texas A&M but we all better be prepared for at least TWO MORE YEARS of A&M QB Johnny Manziel. Sure hope my dawgies avoid them for two more years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How funny to read UGA fans talk national title when not even one of top 2 teams in division. A team that lay down when challenged (see Oct 6, 2012) ain’t no national title contender.
___________________

So UGA’s the East Division winner again–yet only the third-best team in the division? Yeah, you make a lot of sense.

And how did your team perform “when challenged”? That’s right, you LOST them both–and that’s exactly why you’ll be nothing more than spectators yet again for the SECCG.

Got a crazy plan.

UGA should rest the defensive starters and start preparing for Alabama NOW.

Play the back ups.

Run up the score on G South 80+ points.

Dump 70 points on Georgia Tech.

Lead the BCS in offensive scoring.

Mess up the computers.

the pups ain’t going no where until they start playing an SEC schedule . . . .

Where were all these UGA schedule critcs in 2008 when we were rated having the roughest schedule in the nation. FL, SC, Bama, LSU, Ariz.St.
It’s bad when these so called SEC fans don’t know that its because of schedule rotation that teams in opposite divisons don’t play ever year. Anyone notice that Florida didn’t play Alabama or Auburn this year? SC didn’t play Bama or Mississippi St. Mark Richt doesn’t make the schdeules.
___________________

You should know that the SEC schedule is not the real issue; it’s the OOC schedule–and UGA’s usually is pathetic by any measure. Next year, we upgrade some with Clemson. Long overdue.

If your offense scores 60+ in the final 2 games

So, in 2006, voters went for 13-1 Florida over 13-0 Boise St?
In 2008, voters went for 13-1 Florida over 13-0 Utah?
But in 2012, with the SEC having 6 teams ranked in the top 10 right now, the best conference by a mile, no 1 loss SEC team is ahead of Kansas State, Oregon, or Notre Dame?
What changed since 2006 & 2008? Why doesn’t UGA get the same standard applied as Urban Meyer got in 2006 & 2008 with his 1 loss teams in the midst of 2 undefeated teams Boise St n 2006, and Utah in 2008?
_____________________

The answer should be obvious. Boise and Utah played in weak, non-BCS conferences with traditionally soft schedules (kinda like UGA’s OOC schedules most years).

I think UGA’s best plan

IS RUN UP THE SCORE ON OFFENSE, TRY AND GET TO 100 POINTS BOTH OF THE LAST TWO GAMES

AND REST THE DEFENSIVE STARTERS.

MAKE THE COMPUTERS THINK YOU’RE NUMBER ONE IN BOTH

1) AVERAGE MARGIN OF VICTORY
2) SCORING OFFENSE

LET’S CALL IT THE “CHIP KELLY PLAN”

BECAUSE THAT WILL SKEW THE AVERAGE MARGIN OF VICTORY

AND GEORGIA WILL FINISH #1 IN BCS IN OFFENSIVE SCORING.

AND THE COMPUTER WILL THEN RANK YOU #1.

Murray could also wrap up the Heisman by throwing for 15 td’s in the last 2 games.

What, if anything, can Georgia do to move ahead of Alabama in the polls? Looks like even IF they beat Alabama in the SECCG, Alabama would STILL be ranked above them! Alabama loses AT HOME to a lower ranked opponent, and only falls three spots. Georgia, on the other hand, SHUTS OUT an opponent ON THE ROAD, and doesn’t move at all! Let’s face it Dawg fans, this is a beauty contest, and we are the UGLY girl in it!
____________________

What’s UGLY is the blatant bias in your analogy. You’ve carefully pointed out how Bama lost to a “lower ranked” opponent, but failed to mention its ranking (15). Then you slyly omit ANY mention of ranking with respect to UGA’s opponent, Auburn, which obviously is one of the sorriest teams in D-1 football this year.

And on top of all that, you thought you’d get away with it. Weasel.

An undefeated and No. 1-ranked Bama would’ve been a MUCH better thing. A win over that Bama team would’ve meant UGA beat Nos. 1 AND 2. Not many teams over the years can make that claim. The BCS is stupid, was stupid, and has always been a stupid invention of the same kind of people who are FM radio consultants….or worse, accountants, or worse yet, lawyers. The big ten (or twelve, or whatever) got together with NBC and Notre Dame, and they figured out how to jigger the whole thing. If you cannot win on a level playing field, then change the field, and that’s what they did. Hey, it’s not my fault they say; blame it on the machine. We would never have even a hint of a playoff if somebody hadn’t transfused the old geezers up in Columbus, Ohio or South Bend, slapped them a couple of times to come around, and made them realize that, hey, the trophy case was full in 1954, but we can make a bucketful of money if we would only……Please! They don’t want the likes of GA Tech coming up there as they have done before and kick their behinds. You don’t really think that Alabama can’t whip two of the “top three” currently in the BCS standings? Right. You ain’t watchin em play. Oregon….that’s another story. Kansas State? Appalachian State plays them straight up. They don’t want to play us. We rattle their cage. Those guys can’t win fairly….ask Stanford.

The Bama loss hasn’t “really” hurt the SEC. It hurt Bama’s chances. If the conference doesn’t get a team in the BCSCG, it’s likely we don’t have a team worthy. The pundits expect perfection from the SEC and they usually get it, when they don’t, we’re on the outside looking in. Just the way things are. It’s a negative of playing in the nations strongest conference. The natural order probably demands another conference have a chance to win it without the SEC participating.

That said, yes I believe any of the SEC’s power teams would win the NC game if they played in it.
