In a weekend that saw them move closer to the SEC Championship game, the Georgia Bulldogs also inched up in the Bowl Championship Series standings.
Georgia climbed one spot to No. 5 in the latest BCS standings, released Sunday night, becoming the highest ranked one-loss team and the second highest ranked SEC team.
Alabama remained No. 1 after Saturday’s last-minute 21-17 victory at LSU. Kansas State stayed No. 2, while last week’s Nos. 3 and 4 teams swapped positions – Oregon climbing to No. 3 and Notre Dame dipping to No. 4.
Georgia replaced LSU at No. 5 after staying on track for the SEC Championship game by beating Ole Miss.
Georgia will represent the SEC East in the Dec. 1 game at the Georgia Dome if it wins at Auburn on Saturday. Alabama will represent the Western Division in the Dome if it wins either of its two remaining league games: Saturday vs. Texas A&M and Nov. 24 vs. Auburn.
The top two teams in the final BCS standings will play for the national title Jan. 7 in Miami. Georgia’s climb in the standings from a starting point of No. 11 on Oct. 14 has some fans wondering about a possible — albeit unlikely — route to the top two for the Bulldogs.
While there are no assurances in a system based on polls and computers, this is what probably would have to happen: The Bulldogs would have to win their three remaining regular-season games, would have to beat an undefeated Alabama in the SEC title game and would need two of the other three undefeated teams ranked ahead of them to lose a game.
The BCS standings include three components that count one-third each: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls.
Georgia is ranked No. 5 in the USA Today and Harris polls and No. 6 in the computers. In the Associated Press poll — not part of the BCS formula — Georgia is tied for fifth with unbeaten Ohio State, which is ineligible for the BCS because of NCAA sanctions.
The Bulldogs would have climbed one more notch in the BCS standings if Pittsburgh had pulled off an upset of Notre Dame on Saturday. But the Irish rallied from a 20-6 fourth-quarter deficit and won 29-26 in triple overtime to stay in the BCS top four. Five SEC teams are in the top eight.
Georgia (8-1, 6-1 SEC) vows to keep its focus on Saturday’s game at Auburn (2-7, 0-6).
“We’ve got to win that game,” UGA center David Andrews said, “or all those other victories don’t matter.”
While a win would put Georgia in the SEC title game for the second consecutive year, a loss would send Florida to the Dome.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity we have,” UGA receiver Tavarres King said. “To have an opportunity to go back to the Dome and win an SEC championship, it’s right there at the tips of our fingers. We’ve just got to go get it.”

TK Conley Wooten and Rhett will have to make really big plays the next 3 weeks. We can’t rely on MM not getting doubled every play. If there was ever a time for Jay Rone to live up to his “#1 TE of 2011″ status, now is that time.

Go Dawgs! I think that National Championship game is a stretching it a bit, especially since people were calling for Richt’s head (as they have been over the past number of years) just a couple of weeks ago. With a guaranteed 8 win season with hopefully win #9 next week then we should be at least a 10 win season which is pretty darn impressive. Yeah, yeah, I know, we’ve had close calls but all teams have – that’s the difference between the top teams and the bottom. And yes we’ve had an easy schedule but that’s the way it goes – sometimes we’ve had the toughest schedule in the nation. I think it says something when we’re the highest ranked 1 loss team around.

I think beating Alabama and being SEC Champion, as far-fetched as that sounds, would be about all Georgia could’ve hoped for entering the year. And it’s within reach. Forget the BCS and control what you have a hand in.

LSU played for 58 mins, but Bama played for 60 mins.
Richt was hoping for Bama to blowout LSU. Why? Complacency that Bama might bring to SEC game. The close win or a loss for Bama was not what he wanted.
Translation: SC 35 UGA 7…..again. Oh, and UGA loses bowl again. No worries. Adams will sign Richt for a 18 year extension before leaving in the summer.

Before anyone starts speaking about the albeit, miniscule chance, that the DAWGS might be in a position to possibly play for the National Championship please note the following: First, it would take Georgia winning out their remaining games and beating Alabama in the conference championship. Then it would also take another undefeated team to lose. But if that happens, note that seven of Georgia’s eight wins thus far have come against the following teams: Buffalo (1-7), Missouri (4-5), FAU (2-6), Vanderbilt (5-4), Tennessee (4-5), Kentucky (1-8) and Ole Miss (5-4). Based on these teams and the patsies that remain on the schedule it would probably take a miracle.

In all honesty, the DAWGS are overrated and are lucky to be playing in the SEC title game. With the loss now of another outstanding player, Brown, don’t expect much out of them the rest of the year. They will soon fall like a lead balloon. This comes from a usually optimistic GA supporter, but just being realistic.

First off the Dawgs have to take care of Auburn, a big rivalry game that over the years has been a lot harder than most would have thought. Both teams can point to years when the underdog came in and beat the favored team. 1942 cost Georgia an undisputed National Championship, 2006 cost Auburn a chance at playing for the National Championship. So the team has to focus one game at a time.
Now for Norte Dame those officials calling their games should be in jail, that is all I can say.

I watched all of the top 5 teams this weekend and sincerely believe UGa can beat Oregon, ND and KS. Clearly our toughest game will be Bama, but I was amazed that the LSU offense was able to move the ball……and we are at least equal if not better offensively to the Tigers. When we don’t play “soft” (Ie. FL , Vandy and the last 3 qtrs vs MS)…..we can match-up to LSU defensively. I’m starting to believe this could be a very special year for the Dawgs.

Let’s not take Auburn lightly. If they are fired-up it could be a much tougher game than many expect. Don’t forget, they lost to LSU 12-10 when both teams were fired-up and optimistic. Auburn is a very confusing team and could be a “trap” if we aren’t ready to play. Go Dawgs

I hate seeing the Dawgs back into another SEC East Championship. We didn’t win over Florida – they LOST to us (with their “more than ours” mistakes). We totally were blown away by SC – I bet Spurrier is foaming at the mouth at being the second fiddle behind a team they BEAT.
We have been lucky, and with the exception of Jarvis Jones, I have not seen any excellent football. JJ has single-handedly saved the Georgia football season.
My prediction is that we win the East again – then we will lose to Alabama (unless a miracle occurs). Then we will play in a bowl game where I will keep my fingers crossed that it doesn’t go like the past two bowls.
And Mark Richt will stay at coach, much as I would like to see him replaced. Aaron Murray will continue to be “the annointed one”.

Right now UGa is on track to play teams that were ranked in the “top3″ at sometime this season ( SC #3, FL #2 and Bama). If UGa runs the table their schedule will not hurt them so quit dreaming and wishing. By the way, the SEC has had 6 teams in the “Top 5″ at sometime this season (don’t forget Arkansas was in after the first week)…..so EVERYONE voting knows that an easy SEC schedule trumps a brutally tough schedule in another conference…..like the ACC!!!

NONE of The turnovers in the FL game were “breaks” for UGa……..we caused those turnovers by brutal hits. If we had lost that game I would say FL “backed in” because we had 3 turnovers (2 passes that bounced off receiver’s hands and a pass that Murray threw way over a receiver). We also added a record number of penalties (140+ yards). Yes, we sucked against SC, but SC sucked against LSU, FL and TN.

Several years ago they took a film crew to Boone North Carolina to do a documentary on Appalachian State when they went into Michigan and beat them in their own stadium. The film crews are now working in Statesboro on a team scheduled to visit Athens in two weeks. The same team that went into Tuscaloosa last year and scored twenty eight points against the defense that did not allow LSU to cross the fifty yard line…… Maybe it isn’t Auburn you need to worry about. No way this team plays for a MNC this year. Even if we win out and some other teams lose, the BCS will be making a case for a one-loss Oregon, K-State or Notre Dame. SEC fatigue has set in with the BCS and they are looking for a reason to leave us out. Everyone knew that our schedule was weak coming into this season and the ONE game that we knew we really had to prepare for was Carolina. This coaching staff did not get it done. No way we play for a national title with that beatdown on our record. But, there’s always next year, right? Sigh….

If GA is on all cylinders and MUrray in particular, UGA has the best team in the USA. Not the best coaches, but the best team. If CMR can get the team motivated and Murray doest get deer-in-the=headlights moments, we can beat anybody. Can anybody say 4 yes 4 first-round draft choices on D alone. I’m glad for the Dawgs. I want them to win. But honestly, the polls are such a beauty contes. LSU should have won that game. They outplayed Alabama until the last 2 minutes of the game. Give Alabama credit for keeping their composure and doing what they needed to win. But if Alabama is the consensus #1 team (and to hear the sports media talk, they are head and shoulders above everyone else. I don’t think so…) then LSU really should not be penalized much for losing a close one on the last drive.

Closet Tech Nerds abound – jealous cry babies. One thing stood out when I looked at Auburn’s record. They lost to LSU 12 – 10. They also lost several other fairly close games. And of course they got blown out in a couple of games. The loss of Marlon Brown and Michael Bennett is a tough blow as other teams can now double team Malcolm Mitchell and they were already double teaming Tavarres King. They are also good down field blockers and this will effect the run game. UGA has had fewer long runs since Michael Bennett got injured. Conley is talented and he has to step up now and be a good possession receiver – along with McGowen. Tibbs is still being redshirted so Scott – Wesley will get his chance and he can fly. The TE’s and RB’s will get more passes the next three games. Happy for Little Tree getting some playing time and coming through, Auburn isn’t going to roll over and they would LOVE to ruin the Dawg’s dreams. Got come in ready to play in the 1st quarter and eliminate the turnovers and mistakes on offense. Auburn will be physical and it’s going to be a game won in the trenches. Go Dawgs!

I’d say if our loss was a 3-point loss to SC on the road, we would get consideration, provided we win the rest including the SECCG. But not with that blowout on our record.
ESPN would hammer us on that point, and sway voters to get the unbeatens in.
And we would become the 1st SEC Champion to not make the Big Game, since the last time we were (’05).
Just my opinion of course, but all of that is a long way down the road.

IF this team comes together and plays a full 60 minutes in all three facets of the game, they can and will beat their remaining opponents, including Bama. They just have to want it; the talent is there. And if that happens, they will have earned legitimate BCSNC-game discussion, even if ND, Oregon, and KSU all win out. As long as the Dawgs keep winning, at least we have a reason to care about watching all these other lesser (but undefeated) teams playing in crappy games that otherwise wouldn’t merit any attention at all. At this point in the season, that’s about as much as you can ask for. P.S. We will miss you, Marlon Brown. Best of luck in the NFL. You will be a good one.

UGA Fans are funny. Richt has consistently given them very very respectable seasons, yet they call for his head if he loses one game or has a slow start in the beginning of the season. Its funny because GA Fans act like their football program has some kind of legendary history the likes of Florida, FSU, Notre Dame, USC, Alabama. You have only won ONE national championship 32 YEARS ago and only because you had ONE phenomenal athlete. Richt is a great coach esp. for Georgia.

First things first, we have got to focus on Auburn, not Alabama.
If we beat Auburn, then I really don’t think we’ll be able to block Bama. Nor do I think we’ll be able to consistently stop their awesome running game.
That all said, I don’t care what the rest of the top teams do. If UGA somehow managed to get up and knock off an undefeated Bama in the dome, then we are the best team in the land in my eyes. And it’d be just our luck that the year we won the SEC there would be two other undfeated teams to play for the “national title”. And then the trolls and negative fans would continue to gripe about how Richt can’t win the big one :eyeroll:

Sports Fan, I noticed you threw Floriduh and Free Shoes U in there as legendary programs. When you included those two in there you kinda destroyed your credibility. Before Steve Spurrier arrived Floriduh was a bit of a joke, didn’t win an SEC championship till 91 or something like that. Similarly, ND had six national championships and even lowly Georgia had one before FSU even had a football program.

I used to be a hater too, but I look around and see all of these flash in the pan coaches like Coach Cheezdik at Auburn and I’m really happy with Richt. I bet most of the people in Tenn a few years back that ran Fulmer out of town would love to have a Citrus Bowl invite this season, and he won a National Championship. Yes, we’re fickle fans, but it’s because we know we have a very good program with a proud tradition of success over a hundred years and it’s time for another national championship.

Hey Put …., the term legendary suggests a legend built over time. A decade of success whether it’s the 40’s or the 90’s is still a decade of success and the longer ago it happended the more time the legend has to grow. Yes, Floriduh and FSU have had great programs, lately, but nothing close to the level of sustained success that ND, Bama, and USC have had over the past century. So, if you want to talk about recent success, you better leave FSU out of it, because they haven’t done a damn thing since Y2K.

While I agree with what you say about Richt, I didn’t realize Florida and FSU were “legendary” programs. FSU had one good decade in the 90’s. They never did anything before that or since. Florida never did anyhting until Spurrier arrived in the 90’s. Granted they have owned us since then but we have won 3 of the last 6 and still have a 7 game lead in the all-time series. 47-40-2 vs. Florida. 6-4 vs. Florida St.
We cerntainly are not on the same historic level as ND, Alabama and USC but we’ve been playing football and winning here since the 1890’s. The first ever heisman winner from a southern state was UGA’s Frank Sinkwich. Our lifetime record as a program is 749-400-54. We’ve won 14 SEC Championships. Only Alabama,Texas, Tennessee and Nebraska have appeared in more bowl games. Only Alabama, USC and Oklahoma have more bowl wins. Flordia has 2 NC’s and Florida St. has 3. UGA also has 2.
If they’re legendary then we’re legendary. Just saying.

T TUCKER: “While there are no assurances in a system based on polls and computers, this is what probably would have to happen: The Bulldogs would have to win their three remaining regular-season games, would have to beat an undefeated Alabama in the SEC title game and would need two of the other three undefeated teams ranked ahead of them to lose a game.”
_______________________
This is what I’ve been saying since BEFORE the SC-fla game, when I urged fellow bloggers to pull for the gators that weekend (however distasteful that might be) because we HAD to be facing an undefeated fla the next weekend to have ANY chance of advancing in the polls. The gators did their job with SC, and we in turn did ours with fla, setting the stage for this past weekend, when all true Dawg fans knew that we had no hope of even sniffing a NC game unless Bama beat LSU. So, again, Bama did its job with LSU, and we in turn did our job with Ole Miss.
And now here we are, STILL with a chance–albeit a tiny one–at the NC game. We need two undefeateds to lose (ND almost did it for us Saturday night), we need Bama to enter the SECCG unbeaten (and thus still No. 1), and we need to WIN OUT and then whip that Bama tail for the SEC Championship. Just like Tucker has explained above.
I submit that it would be more than a little difficult for the BCS to turn its backs on a 12-1 SEC Champion that has beated BOTH the Nos. 1 & 2 teams.
Oh well, it’s fun to dream. Still a long way to go–starting Saturday at Auburn, where those hapless Tigers would love nothing better than to spoil our season. Go get ‘em Dawgs!
And for those of you who can’t TEMPORARILY put aside your hatred of a rival (i.e., fla) when a victory by that rival significantly helps your own team’s cause, you aren’t TRUE fans of your team. You should ALWAYS want what’s best for YOUR team–even if it means fleeting success for that rival you so despise.

I had a big problem with Notre Dame before and now I really have a bigger problem in them not scheduling hard enough teams. Like this year The only teams they have played are Stanford, Oklahoma and USC. The highest ranking is 12TH. Notre Dame has schedule one hard team from all the Conference EXCEPT the SEC. Now if they had beaten Georgia, Florida, Alabama or L.S.U. or even Texas A&M then there would be an argument for them to be at 4TH in the BCS. but in my opinion they deserve no better than 7TH OR 8TH because they haven’t played anyone . I know some will argue that Stanford and Oklahoma was in the top 10 when Notre Dame played them but my answer to that is should Stanford and Oklahoma have been in the top ten to begin with. THAT IS WHY POLLS SHOULD MEAN NOTHING UNTIL AT LEAST THE 6TH WEEK.
Notre Dame could easily win the rest of their games which they would have beaten a very over rated USC team because of their limited scholarships and end up undefeated. If that happens they could avoid even playing an SEC team for the National Championship if Georgia beats Alabama.
If the Catholic heavy Northeast Media pulls this one off Oregon, Kansas State or especially Alabama will beat Notre Dame like a rented mule. Alabama will beat them 17 to 24 points.
I hope the BCS will not allow a team to get into the Championship that doesn’t belong to a Conference or have to play a Conference

That’s a healthy attitude to adopt as we approach a struggling Auburn team that’s desperate to salvage anything it can in this otherwise disastrous season. NOTHING would ease the Tigers’ pain more quickly than an upset of the Dawgs this weekend.

Hey Tim, don’t you think if Oregon, Notre Dame, or K-State one loses a game , Georgia beats Alabama(a big if) and it is between Georgia, the SEC champion, with recent wins over number 1 and number 2, and a couple of teams who don’t have a conference championship game or nearly as tough a schedule, that the voters would have to consider Georgia. Until someone actually beats or even plays close to the SEC champion in a BCS game, the SEC champ has to get benefit of the doubt. Notre Dame is obviously over rated and would get their doors blown off by Alabama, Georgia or Oregon. K-State i just haven’t seen enough to have an opinion. Murray has great stats cause they never take him out and he has to keep playing against crappy teams so UGa will not lose.
WHY hasn’t Lemay played more this year?
Why isn’t he getting LIVE game experience……Looks like another Joe Cox situation on the horizon.
LeMay is losing a year of playing time but he isn’t getting any experience.
That is bad coaching and playing down to the bad teams early in games.
Top 5 teams don’t do that for the entire season.

Focus on Auburn. They have a ton of players from Georgia on their roster [like SC and Kentucky] and they always play us tough. Hate to see the Gators back into the SECCG with us loosing on the plains. Take care of business this weekend! GATA early and often. Go Dawgs!

All I’m saying is that I don’t classify a 4-TD win a “struggle.”
And I agree with your concerns, but at this point, we’ve had one no-show (SC), but we’re 8-1, ranked in the top 5, have beaten our biggest rival, and STILL have a chance for a HUGE year if we can win out. Do I give us a solid shot at beating Bama? Not really, but right now I’m more concerned about playing a desperate Auburn team at their place.
If we can win out the reg season, NOBODY will give us a chance against Bama, and that “disrespect” may be our biggest ally. Very few gave us a chance against fla, after all, and you know the rest of that story.
I’m just relieved that were “in the mix” at all this late in the year. If the Dawgs do their jobs, the rest will take care of itself.

Dude, are you retarded? Do you even watch UGA play? What crappy teams have we played where we “left Aaron Murray in” so we could win? The kid is approaching Danny Woerfuel’s NCAA TD record. He’s already broken Georgia’s. We’re playing the same teams UGA always plays. As a matter of fact were playing the same teams the Woerfeull played against at Florida. It’s the SEC East. Hello. We playthe same teams every year. How was our schedule weak? We played South Carolina who was ranked 6 at the time and we beat the #2 Florida team that beat Sout Carolina, Texas A&M and LSU who was leading the #1 team in the country with under 2 minutes to play.
You havn’t seen Christian Lemay because he sucks. Hutson Mason is our backup QB anyway dbag. Don’t worry about the future at QB. Brice Ramsey is committed to UGA and will be early enrolling. He will sit behind Murray and Mason next year and redshirt. He will probably beat Hutson Mason out for the job the following year. You should check him out on rivals or 247. You do know what rivals is right?
It doesn’t matter who plays QB for UGA late in games when we have a lead because Bobo and Richt go ultra conservative and run the ball. So to say that A Murray got most of his 80 TD passes in mop up duty is ridiculous. You’re obviously a clown who doesn’t know shit about football.

No Mason is not the back up….this year it is LeMay…..Mason will play and lose his Redshirt ONLY IF Murray were hurt.
LeMay is the back up in games when Murray should come out because the Dwags are winning. Murray has made a career off putting up a lot of Stats against bad teams.
Sorry but there is no way in my mind that Murray is better than Greene or Zier.

Put… – You can say what you want about UGA this year and clearly you will, but the fact is what you did last week doesn’t put points on the board this week. When you have 18-22 year-olds on the field you never know what’s gonna happen. As much as you wish all your talk had any effect on anything, it doesn’t. All it takes is one game to change everything and UGA has the talent to beat Bama. You’re right, UGA does have a tendancy to go flat and play down to the competition, but if we’re firing on all cylinders then we can beat anybody. You just never till they play the game. It’s all a moot point if we lay an egg against Auburn or Bama chokes against A&M. I’m out.

What games should Murray have come out dumbass?
By the way, the definition of the QB that comes in when the starter is hurt is called the backup jackass. If Lemay were the true backup then ot would be him and not Mason. I follow the program closely. I know what the QB situation is.

==================================You don’t know the situation…………….It was stated at the beginning of the year and it has not changed YOU fool………….HUSTON is red shirting and will not play this year…….LeMay is the Back-up…………the ONLY way MASON plays is IF MURRAY is injured and cannot play. You really need to learn what the teams plan for this season is before you call somebody out.

Yeah – I agree Mountain Dawg – All pipe dreams to this point. We struggle with cheese puffs but at least have played the last 2 tough. If we had better field generals, I’d be getting jacked up but we have Joe Slick as the head ball coach and he’s about as motivating a coach as watching paint dry. If Spurrier wants to pay the players, maybe we can get Shawn some greenbacks for getting his teammates jacked up every week. Maybe he could insult a different family member every week.

Bama’s schedule..
Michigan (6-3) Wins against, AF, Umass, Purdue, Illinois, Mich St, Minn (Overrated)
W. Kentucky (6-3) Sun Belt Conference
Arkansas (4-5)
Fla Atlantic (2-7)
Ole Miss (5-4)
Mizzou (4-5)
Tenn (4-5)
Miss St (7-2)
LSU (7-2)
Then finish out with Aggies, W. Carolina, and Auburn
So what makes their schedule more difficult compared to Dawgs?

AS a recent high school graduate who applied at both schools, it has become way harder to qualify for UGA in the last 10 years than Tech. I was accepted at TECH before any other school actually and had to work my way into UGA, so your “smarter argument: is about a decade or more old.

Same thing with my son. He was accepted right off at Tech but he had to wait until the second round to get a UGA offer which he took and had a great college experience for the four years he was in Athens but he did say that Georgia was a lot harder than he expected. Tech has nothing on Georgia when comparing the more challenging majors.

P. Laval, you need to go back to Tech which I doubt you could find with a map and a GPS, and see just how many GT players this season are taking courses in Phys Ed, Business Managment. Courses of this nature. And don ‘t say they don’t exist because they do. Harder to get into UGA now than GT. out of 100+ players and scout team players at Gt, maybe 5% are there for engineering. The welfare remark shows your ignorance that even a true Gt fan wouldn’t have commented. Some of my closest friends and co- workers are tech fans and I would bet your not one. Show your ignorance somewhere else, Dawg fans and Tech fans alike don’t need your ignorance or your waste of our time!
