ATHENS — Moments after Georgia put the finishing touches on its 17-9 win over No. 2 Florida this past Saturday, coach Mark Richt and senior noseguard John Jenkins hugged near midfield. They spoke animatedly, laughed hard and hugged again. It was clearly a moment of unbridled joy.
Richt was asked Tuesday to recount their conversation, but he opted to keep their exchange to himself.
“I remember what it’s about but I won’t say,” Richt said with a grin. “But it was a good thing. Sometimes I’ll say some things to the team and I won’t even remember what I said to them. Then they’ll bring it up after the game. They’ll say, ‘we took care of you’ or ‘we had your back’ or whatever. It was one of those kinds of conversations.”
According to Jenkins, it was definitely one of those “we had your back” conversations.
In addition to the “soft-defense” talk before the Florida game, Jenkins said the Bulldogs were equally inspired by the bashing that Georgia’s coaching staff had taken since the loss to South Carolina and the endless recitation of their record against Top 10 opponents. After losing to the Gamecocks 35-7 on Oct. 6, Georgia dropped to 1-9 against Top 10 opponents since 2008. Jenkins said the players were tired of hearing about it.
“Sometimes it feels like it’s never enough,” Jenkins said. “When you’re in this line of work and you go out trying to please everybody else, then you, yourself, is not pleased. So a win like that, it was one of those victories where we knew exactly what we had within the group. Excluding everybody else, outside influences, we knew what we were capable of. The coaching staff and the players, we had each other’s backs. It was one of those type of deals.”
It used to be that football players were somewhat secluded from all the blather that swirls around every major football program all the time. They would be directed by coaches to refrain from reading newspapers or listening to talk radio and could remain insulated from the onslaught of critique and opinion.
But that’s impossible in the digital age of smart phones and Twitter and message boards and open blog commentary. Players are bombarded with instant and usually horribly ill-informed feedback about the job they or their coaches are doing. Often the messages come directly to them.
Hushing the bashers was as much a part of the joy of beating Florida as was putting the Bulldogs in position to win the East, players said.
“It was definitely a big moment for us and Coach Richt,” said junior tight end Arthur Lynch, who signed with Georgia out of Dartmouth, Mass. “We all see Coach Richt as a father figure. College football is a monopoly that we live in. It is driven by money – you can spin it how you want; NCAA this, NCAA that, TV deals, power conferences – that’s the world we live in. That being said, I don’t know many other coaches in college football who are as kind and loyal to their morals like he is. His base foundation, whether it’s his faith, his honesty or just basic human qualities, you can’t find anybody better than Coach Richt.”
“That short time after the game’s over, we’re happy for him,” senior linebacker Christian Robinson said. “We’re not oblivious to what people say. I watch GameDay every morning we have a late game. We see and hear what people say and we use that as fuel a lot of times.”
As ever, the gulf between the vocalized minority and reality remains vast and deep. They would have you think that Richt — and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, in particular – are in imminent danger of losing their jobs with a misstep in any significant game. As it is, Richt just received a five-year contract extension; he speaks glowingly every chance he gets about the job being done by Bobo, who has the Bulldogs on a record-breaking offensive pace; and those who write the checks seem unswerving in their support.
In the past three years, as Richt maneuvered the Bulldogs through their most tumultuous period in his 12-year tenure, contributions to the Hartman Fund (which is used to determine ticket priority) have remained consistent, between $22.6 to 23 million. And despite a dramatic national decline in game attendance due to a down economy, Georgia has had only a few empty seats due to unclaimed tickets returned by visiting opponents.
It’s all very annoying to Lynch, a history major who has taken a keen interest in the Southeastern football phenomena he moved more than 1,000 miles from home to be a part of.
“You can say what you want to about him as a coach, but obviously he’s had some success,” Lynch said. “He’s the longest (tenured) coach in the SEC. He’s had 10-win, 11-win, 12-win seasons. For us, the criticism is undeserving. But it’s there because that’s just how our society is. It’s a what-have-you-done-for me lately type deal in college football.”

While the Florida win was a great one and things look rosy in the short term… the most likely outcome of this season is no championships either SEC or National and the Dawgs will have squandered the best chance for a special season with way they were dominated in all three phases of the game in Columbia with that 35-0 drubbing. This was the rare confluence of talent and experienced roster every where you look and the weakest schedule the Dawgs have faced in years and are likely to face in the forseeable future. It gets a bit tougher next year with LSU and Clemson.
I think at season’s end the most likely outcome is that we are lamenting the fact that we laid an egg in Columbia, especially if we begin playing to our potential the rest of the season.
I certainly hope that Georgia can win the last four regular season games and then rise up and beat the tide and then if two of OR, KS State, and Notredame stumble the Dawgs have a chance to be get into the mythical national championship game.
The talent is on the roster to win the last four games and compete with Alabama (though BAMA certainly has a very good team that takes care of business). I have said all along that Georgia has the 2nd most talented roster in the SEC this season.
However, it is more likely that Georgia will continue to play shaky football and will lose in the SEC championship game pretty badly so no championships brought home to Athens. I still see 3 Georgia 3 losses this year. Hope the Dawgs prove me wrong.

Nice to see the players like Richt,, but I think it would have spoken louder if they showed up in Columbia rather than nice quotes about him to reporters.
Georgia played lights out on defense against Florida and it was a great win. However, it was a shaky game in many ways. More penalty yards than rushing yards. Three turnovers by the experienced qb in the first half. 1-10 I believe on 3rd down.
It is extremely rare to lose a game when the opponent turns the ball over 6 times. The record was 11 turnovers and the team still won in 1943. Wonder what the Georgia record is? Has any Georgia team ever forced 6 turnovers and lost? I can’t remember it happening. Will AL turn it over 7 times if we make it to the SECCG? Will 1-10 on 3rd down get it done against the tide with 130+ penalty yards?

We was lucky 2 win last week. In all the big games the offense never shows up. Look at our record against top 25 teams and give me Bobo’s average. Defense forces 6 turnovers and we score 17 points now that’s getting it done!!! Bottom line we are just not getting it done. We never put a complete game together. STILL SICK OF RICHT!!!

I think most of the UGA bloggers look past a lot of the glass is half empty comments, I know I do but each person has and is entitled to their on opinion. That being said it speaks volumes when the players say the kind of things in support of their coaches. Time to Get over the South Carolina game we don’t need to be reminded. Btw we recovered from that loss to beat the number 2 team while South Carolina two in a row but you don’t see blogging to have Spurrier replaced. Be grateful and appreciate what you have. We are 6th in the BCS poll and have a chance to move up or solidify that position. It is football not life and death like we are seeing up north.

real dawgs? win or lose all i have ever wanted from my dawgs is to be proud of the teams performance after the game. and frankly the least few years have left alot to be desired. every year with discipline problems off the field and frankly, even stupider play on the field. personal foul after personal foul. richt is a classy guy no doubt and maybe he helps mold young thugs into stand up, classy citizens but he gets paid millions to do so. all we ask for in return is that the effort on the field maintain some consistency. im tired of being blown out on national television.

Mr. Lynch’s comments hit a nerve with this old grad, class of 64, and season ticket holder since then. I seen some great Ga. teams and many not so great. All the years come and go like a flash.Saw the NC game in 1980 with my 12 year old daughter, she is now 44, and we still talk about that game. Saturday I yelled and cussed the tv and the coaches just like always. And still like to win,but not more than the players or the coaches. My point it’s a game, folks for young men and not the fans, we just get to pay to watch. Mr Lynch will remember what he learned from Coach Richt for the rest of his life and very little of it has to do with football. Go DOGS

I bet I-Dog, Maclenny_dawg and Austin are ~300 lb couch potatoes who can’t see their shoes, much less tie them… and they have the audacity to complain about these young men, who are putting their hearts and soles into a game, so that these slobs (who purport to be fans, but I have my doubts) can sit in their broken down ‘Barco-loungers’, drinking Milwaukee’s Best and pretend that they are God’s Gift to SEC Coaching.
I personally am thankful that we have not only have quality coaches such as CMR, CMB and CTG, but that we have quality role models for these young who are playing for them! These players love and respect these coaches, these coaches love and respect these players, and I for one appreciate all that they give to the Bulldog Nation. I know they aren’t perfect, and I would no doubt do things differently if I were in their shoes, but I am not… and neither are you guys. So in the words of Theodore Roosevelt…

But as a season ticket holder (4 seats) I have given plenty of money, time, energy, and emotion to this team and school and have not received a very good return on my investment. You can question my and the other many thousands who think Richt’s time has come and gone, that is your right and but you stand on very shaky ground to question my loyalty to this team. If you feel Richt, Bobo, Grantham are the answer then show your support. However I think this staff has lost it’s mojo and I do not see them getting it back. Let’s all agree that we are all true red and black Dawg fans, and that we disagree on how to acheive our common goals.

John Jenkins has it right. In team sports, you play first for your teammates and your coaches. If you happen to please the fans, that’s a bonus. If you’ve prepared in the weight room, practice field, and film room, and given your best effort during the game, that’s all any reasonable fan can ask. No doubt in my mind that all UGA players and coaches left it all on the field in the Fla game, and I appreciate it.
The unreasonable fan does things like complain about HOW you won the game.

Against common opponents (UT, Vandy, SC, UK) this year:
UGA: 3-1, +29 point differential
Florida: 4-0, +102 point differential
On top of that Florida beat a top 10 team. Something UGA hasn’t done in recent memory. Plus its Florida who UGA never plays well against. Sorry, but UGA seems like a pretty silly pick here Mark. I know you want to play the hopeful homer but be realistic every once in a while.

I have no doubt these players feel this way about their coaches- I would be surprised if they didnt. I think the problem most fans (yes, even those who really do attend games and give money to the school to support football) is we are so inconsistent and in the past few years rarely played to our potential. Now weather that lies with the coaches coaching or the players executing- who knows. We have way to much talent to be have not won anything since 2006. I am sorry- I dont count the SEC east last year as being significant- we won 10 in a row on a very easy schedule and carolina lost with a tough schedule- the hand was delt, but honestly carolina should have been in the SEC game last year. I hope and pray that this team finally keeps the foot on the pedal the rest of the year. Lose to Ole Miss and the doom and gloom returns….again, like I said its being consistent…..

This was a sweet victory indeed! Darth Visor made Flo-ri-duh a hated team during his tenure, now he’s turning it toward the cocks! Any team in the SEC rises and falls with the strength of their recruiting classes. It all starts with that which is why Alabama stays at the top. Sabin gets most of the top players and they win.

See, I have mixed feelings over the coaching issue at UGA. On one hand, I know that UGA will win 10 games a year on the average, and contend for the SEC East most years, but will not contend for the National Title…..That makes me want a change.
On the other hand, I know that UGA with Richt in charge will NOT be involved in a major scandal that will embarrass the school, fans, alumni, etc….Richt will NOT be caught drunk driving with a pair of panties on his head and some skank riding shotgun in his F-150, and he will do what’s best for his athletes…..whether that involves being a father figure to them, or whether that involves kicking them out of school and off the team if they need it. And that makes me want to keep Richt forever.

Best pr machine in the southeastern conference. Big hat no cattle. Got the talent but no coaching. Nothing has changed. If Florida had played Georgia the week after South Carolina, like Florida had to do, Florida would have won. These games make you show your cards on film. I still see lots of undisciplined and lots of penalties. There are actually some teams outside the SEC playing good football this year too.

Ed Pilcher I like what you say but I think it couldn’t be farther from the truth. I think you are sitting on a time bomb in Athens. These kids any day can blow up on you. When the Columbus running back sensation is caught riding around with a gun under his seat check out who was in the car with him. Freshmen football players. Check what time of night it was. When the press gives these things a pass they help Georgia stay in the trouble they have been in every since Richt has been here. The press at Penn State worshiped at the feet of JP and this one is educated at Georgia and turns a blind eye too many times as trouble brews up there. These things keep a very talented team from going beyond triple A ball.

There is no denying that CMR is a terrific coach and an even better person. I, like most UGA fans, have desperately wanted Georgia to “get it done” and for Richt to prove his critics wrong.
I think most fans have become frustrated over not Georgia losing games but the WAY they have lost some bigger games in recent years. There has been a total lack of energy in some of these games. Perhaps Saturday was a sign that things are changing. I was very happy to be wrong about last Saturday’s outcome.

Has anyone ever seen “Facing the Giants”/ It’s a football movie and CMR has a cameo in it but what I will always remember about the film is a scene that demonstrates the huge gulf between what an individual thinks is his best and what his best really is. Those of you that think that the Dawgs laying an egg against SC is evidence of bad coaching, think about this. The human being always seeks the path of least resistance. Until faced with crisis we usually have no idea what we are actually capable of. You can be told that you are more, be pushed, and even punished for not giving more effort but you always think you are giving your best until the crisis happens and you really push yourself.
These guys had to face a moment of truth to push themselves and they responded. The coaching staff has probably told them a zillion times they need to focus and push but it goes in one ear and out the other. Then they realize that everyone else, including a peer, thinks the same thing. It hurts and it is insulting but it is the truth. So you either respond or you don’t. They responded.
Now we will see if they can keep on responding. My guess is that they will.

Wow! It’s way too early in the day for Tech fans to whine and cry about the Bulldogs. Maybe that annual drubbing after Thanksgiving will quiet them down. I see a 48-6 score in that one.
@ Ed Pilcher, I agree. You have to love Mark Richt, but you know that he will never get us a national championship. We need another motivational speaker, such as Shaun Williams, to motivate us for The SEC Championship game. But I would rather have a Richt than a Spurrier any day. Go Dawgs!

DallasDawg 2, which of those involve Coach Richt? He doesn’t set the admissions standards. Other schools allow players in that fail to qualify at Georgia. The other things are on the players’ shoulders. Coach Richt and staff punish these offenses more heavily than most other schools. Athens/Clarke County police do not look the other way when players commit crimes. Zach Mettenberger would still be on almost every other football team but UGA. The school does not intervene in their criminal cases like other universities have been known to do.
Coach Richt would never call himself a saint, it is others that point out his good works and remark on his gentlemanly behavior. If you think he is a phony you are entitled to your opinion but don’t go spouting cooked numbers that have nothing to do with him as evidence. If he had permitted these acts to go unpunished or overlooked these behaviors I would be the first to point it out. The ongoing narrative is that Coach Richt’s disciplinary policies and the university’s policies create a competitive disadvantage. I don’t know what you expect but if you think that you could do better you should apply for the job.

There are some fans no matter what Mark Richt does will not make them happy.Georgia needs to win a national title and I think they will soon.I would rather my son play for a man like Mark Richt than Nick Saban who runs off his mistakes and steps over and on players to get where he wants.Mark Richt teaches his players life lessons and help them after they graduate with college jobs or hires them himself.Daniel Inman-Tony Gilbert-Thomas Brown etc.Mark Richt cares about his players in this era of quick results and fire everybody mentality.I hope Georgia plays Alabama in the SECCG and good beats evil.Richt-3 Saban-1-Richt usually gets the upper hand when he plays Saban.

I do think that when the players see enough people saying the same thing, that they do take it to heart. There was a ton of comments last week that the defense was playing soft, then when one of their own spoke up, they finally woke up. I didn’t go to UGA, but I’ve been a ticket holder for 21 years. My friend, who graduated from UGA, refused to watch the Fla game because he was still pi$$ed about the Carolina game.
If you’re irritated about the coaches, the preparation, the concessions, whatever, it’s your right to be so.
But to stop going to games, stop watching, etc…? It’s why the rest of the SEC says UGA has the ‘most
fair weather fans’ in the conference.

Without the fans who’s gonna pay for these kids scholarships ? Without the fans what occupation will pay Mr Richt $2.8 million a year? Without the fans how will the university of ga generate $52 million dollars annually in profits? Uga, the coaches and the players need to get off their high horse and recognize why they play at this level.
Arthur Blank is the only sports owner in the state of ga who has shown his appreciation for the fans. He lowered ticket prices, he takes his team to the cap, he apologize for the lockout, he wants the best stadium for the fans, he will never except mediocrity from his employees and he wants to build a championship organization. He’s not perfect but he cares. Thank you Mr Blank.

Good comments NC bloggers. I get very frustrated by ALL the players CMR releases and then schools like LSU, Auburn, etc are more than happy to pick them up. Richt is total class and I his accomplishments are great both on and off the field. A classic example is he has coached more players than any coach in history who have won the Allstate Community Service Award…..which Murray received this year.

I will not come on here and bash u back for your comments. But u are so far from the truth. I for one have or will never bash the players. But I will offer my comments from a standpoint to the people who can control how a game is played and that is the coaches. I respect and support Richt because he is my favorite teams coach. However I like anybody outside this team can see that Richt is not doing the job I think the Dawgnation deserves. Yes 10 win seasons is nice and a occasional chance at a championship. But the reason I for 1 can and will continue to state is Richt has had his time to take us to the top and it hasn’t happened. We have continued to stay medicore with Richt. I don’t think that Richt is the main problem I see for the Dawgs. I see that Bobo should have been fired years ago. But with Richt being to loyal to the coaches and to the upper classmen he doesn’t fix what I think he sees and knows.He is also not able to have the performances for his team to dominate even the average teams as we continue to play to the level of competition and not allowing the under classmen a chance to get valuable game experience. He just believes in faith to work itself out. Being a christian myself I also know that the Lord puts you in situations that you have to make choices you really don’t agree with. With all that being said that is why I am SICK OF RICHT!!! Oh and 1 more thing manateedawg I am 6′1 and weigh only 212. SICK OF RICHT!!!

The constant bashing from the vocal minority would make you think the program is in shambles. However, once I got inside Everbank Stadium in Jacksonville on Saturday, and I saw the Georgia side was full 30 minutes before the game, I soon realized that the silent majority (of 42,500) was behind the team and its coaches and was ready for the game.

Again, thanks to Richt and team for the big win on saturday. Still in jacksonville and still smiling. Starting to get my voice back. Heck of a time in that stadium. That is what the game is about. Passion fire and excitement. It is not about stats, blogs, a media hype. It is all about the energy in the stadium. RIcht has brought a ton this year. One of the best years of games I can remember. Sometimes I think many folks who spend so much time upset on the blogs are not spending any time in the stadium. It has been a damn good year. Even with the SC loss, it has been a damn good year. When was the last time we took down Florida and it mattered to them on a national level. That feels very good. You can hear it in the players how much they love this guy. That is good enough for me. OK, you guys are right.
I’m sure that Alabama will turn the ball over 7 times and we will squeak a win out in the SEC championship game. Lets all be positive and SUPPORT the team whatever that means and I have no doubt that the penalties will go from 132 yards to 25 or so magically and that Murray will go 28-30 with no interceptions and 2 touchdowns in the next big game we play. All we have to do is be ALL IN AS FANS and SUPPORT these young men and it will be laid at our feet.
No I didn’t play in the game last Saturday. Are you suggesting that only the players that played in the game can comment on it?
I say “we” win or lose because I love Georgia football. That doesn’t mean I am happy with having 132 penalty yards and needing Jarvis Jones to have WATERBOY like stats and an incredible defensive performance overall to squeak out a win against FL. Their best player had the ball inside our 5 yard line running toward the goal line to tie up the game (with a 2 point conversion) with 2 minutes to go. Thank God Jarvis was there again.
We didn’t win any championships with Stafford, We didn’t win any championships with AJ Green, and it looks like we won’t win any with Jarvis Jones. Like, I said I hope we win all the rest of our games and get a little lucky and get in the national title game… however, I call it as I see it.
We played lousy against FL in 2 of the 3 phases of the game. The D was incredible. To those who don’t like the negative view of my post. Tell me where I am wrong. Name all the games where UGA got 6 turnovers and lost. Do you see us beating AL with the same performance we gave against FL? How about the average of the games we played against the two good teams we played FL and SC. Will that get it done against BAMA? We aren’t there yet and next year we lose:

It annoys me that no one ever mentions the season when Georgia finished No. 2 in the BCS poll and started the next season No. 1. That’s a pretty great achievement. In college basketball, reaching the Final Four is a major success, even if you finish fourth. In pro football, baseball and baketball, reaching the Super Bowl, World Series, or NBA finals is a super success, even for the loser. Why can’t the media and the fans give UGA the credit for super runnerup in ‘07?

Gary, I like and respect Richt as a person and it doesn’t surprise me that the players love him. That is great, it really is.
You say that it has been a damn good year despite the South Carolina game. In my view, Georgia was able to win one of the two games where the talent was even. In the other, we were down 35-0 with a minute left. To me, that “little” blemish is enough to make it not a “damn good year”.
If the players loving Richt, despite getting arrested at unprecedented levels, is good enough for you. I respect that and I agree with you that Richt is a great role model. I don’t like the way the team has played over the past 5-6 years and we will have to agree to disagree on that.

Are you going to give up and play mediocre football and play in another lousy bowl game. Maybe it doesn’t mean a lot to you UGA players that all of the surrounding states continue to call you soft, inconsistent, unprepared, unable to win. It’s what I here everyday in Alabama, in South Carolina and so on. You have the talent and toughness to win out! agree that booing at a college game has no place. Some of you may think I don’t support the team. I scream my lungs out and stay til the end of the game whether it is bitter or sweet. I graduated from UGA and want to see the Dawgs win. I wasn’t secretly rooting for FL to make a point and I hope that UGA starts playing to their potential and wins an SEC and/or national championhip this year.
I am not calling anyone names. I am not cheering against my team. I simply don’t think things are as rosy as some other fans do. I believe we will see a 3 loss season this year and once again no championships and as I have pointed out with facts, this is the year to do something special. Bama was replaced with MO in game 2 (nice break) and we play 3 cupcakes and no LSU or MS State. 9 NFLers on the defense and an offense with great young running backs, incredibly deep receiving corp, average offense line (but getting better) and a 3rd year starter at QB.

The biggest factors in the defensive effort were Jarvis Jones being healthy and the players settling into their positions after all the disruptions from suspensions. With confidence restored, I expect the D to play at a high level from here on out, barring serious injury issues.

The coaches skin should be plenty enough thick by now. If it isn’t they’re in the wrong line of work. Feel free to find something else. IMHO, it is every fans right and duty to speak out when they feel something is wrong with the coaches/team. It is the support that the fans provide that allow them to play the game in the first place. Get over it.
Big John and Arthur are loyal to the coach. I can appreciate that and they should be. The coaches can deflect most of the criticisms by their performance just as the players can deflect from the coaches by theirs. If Richt got his feelings hurt from some fans for his lack luster performance in a 35-7 beatdown, he needs to strap up and put his big girl pannies on. It comes with the territory. Don’t you folks understand what Jenkins and Lynch are saying…who they’re talking about? They came to Georgia because of these coaches. They work hard and play hard because of their loyalty to the coaches AND, probably most of all, because of their loyalty to their teammates. When fans openly bash those coaches, or indeed their fellow players, it hurts. And the only way they could possibly react is to ‘circle the wagons’ (or just quit altogether), and who do you think they’re circling the wagons against? That’s right, those that are attacking them. I’m capable of just as much frustration as the next guy, but I’ve been around long enough to know that this kind of open hostility makes things worse, not better. It says to the players – all of which know kids that are potential recruits – we don’t care about what you think or who you’re loyal to…if I can’t ‘big dog it’ around my (fill in the rival name here) friends then I’m gonna complain – and try to show everybody just how smart and tough I am while I’m at it. Now I ask you, who would recommend to their friends to come to Georgia just to put up with that? Would you?
If young Mr Murray decides to stay for another season, he could get his Doctorate, or do his Masters Thesis, on analyzing the mindsets and personalities on display on sports blogs…it would be revealing – and embarrassing.

Well it is sweet that John Jenkins cares about Mark Richt and doesn’t want him to get his feelings hurt but it doesn’t really change the fact that UGA rarely ever beats a good team and only beat Florida because they completely imploded. A coach gets paid a lot of money to handle criticism. If Richt can’t handle it after performing poorly for so many years than he should find a new profession.

I for one am proud of the effort the Dawgs delivered in Jax, and I believe that they will run the table to ATL. And then, well we shall see……. You have to play the game and it is the SECCG. Go Dawgs!!!

If Murray plays the way he did in the second half of the Florida game then Georgia should be able to score 38 to 45 points. Grantham is the key. Ole Miss. is going to run the no huddle so Georgia will not be able to substitute unless they do it a lot faster than they did against Florida. Our defense doesn’t need to look confused at the No Huddle because we have so many Juniors and Seniors on the team.
I think we get the same effort from the Offense but it will be a test to see if our Defense reverts back to the lazy look or the look that they showed in the Vanderbilt or Florida game. When the Defense can check in like they did with Florida then all the complains that our defense have been receiving were valid. They were not playing to their potential but let me remind the defense that you only have a few more games to impress the scouts if you expect to be drafted in the first 5 rounds, now is the time to prove the pre-season hype, we know the talent is there after the Florida game.

Performance wise the Dawgs players laid it on the line Saturday, hopefully it wasn’t “just” for their coaches. Last time I looked it wasn’t the coaches that were paying their tab. That’s the first time in five years we’ve won a game of significance, against a big time opponent. My advice to the young pups is to be “proud” of that “G” you have the “honor” of wearing and give your best every time you strap it on. Anything less, and some of us will let you know about it. Read this, Mark Richt hasn’t “earned” what we’ve paid him the last five years, the criticism is justified. I’m still not a Richt supporter, maybe he turns things around and raises this program to the potential, and level it’s capable of being. If not, find someone who can. That’s fair I think.

I-Dog, I agree with most of your assessment…I think we will lose 2 games, however. The Kool Aid drinkers accuse you of being a hater when you are critical of the team or CMR…Here’s a question: Why should it take gimmicks to fire a team up for big games? Black-outs, Red-outs, new uniforms, players calling the team soft, etc….. Bottom line, UGA takes top HS talent that eventually becomes top NFL talent but they don’t win championships in college. They don’t appear coached up or fired up a lot of times. CMR is a great man and I would love to see him succeed. However, he is paid with top coaches in CFA…..What would Urban “The Cryer” Meyer do with these players? Saban? Miles? Brian Kelly? If fans want a super nice guy that will consistently give you 10 wins (mostly against lower talented programs) and lots of losses against schools who recruit against UGA, then pay him $800k and accept the fact that championships are “off the table.” I agree, if not this year – when?

Wow, some of you Dawg “fans” are really eat up with the bitter. We’ve got a coach, Ol’ Ball coach Sleeze Superior, who is on a one man campaign to suppress the constitutional right of free speech, coaches for one game a year (UGA) with no other goal like winning the SEC East, whines incessantly about the “tough SEC schedule” (you know, the same schedule kids dream about playing in their careers) and threatens to walk out every other breath. How do you think a player with us feels when his coach is espousing such bitterness, making fun of other coaches, going to war with the media, and calling negative attention to himself and the team nationwide. My god, wouldn’t we like to have a Ritcht coaching us. Go ahead and fire him and we’ll grab him in a heartbeat…You naysayers deserve it.

Kool-aid and Hugs… the difference is Tech lost to MTSU… by 3 TD’s. They were trampled by BYU. UGA lost to SC and looked bad doing it… but won the big game to even have a shot at an SEC title. Not much of a comparison. If that is all you can come up with then you are in pretty sad shape.

No doubt Mark Richt is a great guy. No doubt he is really liked by his players. No doubt he is changing their lives, for the rest of their lives……………….And no doubt he is a better man than a football coach and will never get the Dawgs a National title. 12 years. Plenty of money and talent. And yes, he’s a great guy. I’m of the opinion that nothing we’ve seen in the last 12 years will change in the next 12. We’ll have some better years than others, but the trend is down, the roster is such we look like we are probation, we don’t have a #2 QB ready, and our OL situation has been bad for 4 or 5 years. But, I like the guy……Geez.

This blog’s postings are consistent with the findings that most people on blogs are negative and use these forums to rant and vent. I’m a UGA fan. I believe Richt gives us the leadership needed year in and year out to have a quality program that is always in the running for a great year.
My focus is for UGA to win the SEC East, win the SEC and win the bowl game. I don’t understand all the complaining and think people need to grow up. I respect the rest of the SEC and the coaches. This is the most competitive conference in college football. I also believe UGA can compete with any team in the country including Alabama.

JB… please get your facts straight. Hutson Mason is ready to take over when Murray leaves. Our roster was purged… something most other schools wouldn’t have the guts to do. And the trend is up. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dawgs take the SEC east again next year…even with the tougher schedule. and no I am not a “kool-aid” drinker. I am a Bulldog… through and through, win, lose or draw. I have stuck with the Dawgs through thick and thin. I was critical of CMR and staff because the same things kept happening in the big games. Then we beat UF. They won despite not playing a good game. They won against a really good defense that forces turnovers and an offense that hammers the ball down everybody’s throat. We gave them turnovers and still won. That shows heart and that is what everyone was complaining about. I am still watching to see if we can show the same heart against a less hated opponent. And then against a very poor Auburn team. I will feel much more assured after that.

I’m in sales. If a company makes me one of the highest salaried Salesmen in the Nation and I typically got crushed competing against other companies for new business but consistently picked up the lay-ups and held on to existing customers making it an ok year, my company would fire me for not improving and taking them to the next level. No matter how nice or Christian I am. If a company pays me an average salary and expects a “decent effort” than decent results might be acceptable.
There is absolutely no way we will ever win every game. But there is also NO WAY that UGA should’ve come out flat with a “deer in the headlights” look at USCe. That game was nationally televised and had the Gameday crew on sight. That game involved 2 top 10 teams and the leader had the edge in the East. That game was against a Border rival. That game represented the first time in history that USCe could possibly beat UGA 3 times in a row. That game was against the most hated player/coach that has ever played/coached against UGA. That game was against a team that had a RB with 2 consecutive 200 yd games against us and he supposedly had an “awesome D.” If UGA lost a competitive contest (win or lose), no one would be talking about this game. Richt looked like a Zombie on the sideline and appeared to have no answers for SC. We never changed strategy. We never pulled a starter. We never chewed some ass for whiffing on assignments. Our Special Teams didn’t show up (again).

I’m glad you like watching kids play football because they love it and I agree they should never be critiqued. I do to. That is called rec league football and the best part is everybody gets a trophy at the end of the season for participating and at halftime one of the mom’s bring orange slices.

Which hurts recruiting worse? A few critical posts on the AJC blog about the play of the team over the past 5-6 years OR the nationally televised loss to South Carolina that nearly all potential Georgia players for the next 5 years were watching. The one where we were down 35-0 and the announcers were scratching their heads and trying to come up with reasons why so talented a roster didn’t show up? If our recruits have sight and hearing capabilities, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that think that might have hurt us a little.
I think Auburn being able to show off their recent national title trophy to a UGA recruit and Bama showing off their two national title trophies and Florida showing off their two recent national title trophies probably hurts our recruiting efforts a little more than any silly little post I can come up with.
Georgia is a great place to play football. Incredible facilities, sold out 92,000 seat stadium, plays in the best conference, beautiful campus, average SAT for students is over 1,200. Great college town, beaufitul women. Not a tough sell to the hundred plus D-1 prospects in state each year.

I understand what Athur Lynch and Jon Jenkins are saying about it “never being enough”, but I counter with a team stacked with talent, exceptional facilities, outstanding coaches and fans who consistently support them. With all these conditions, it is hard to understand a 1-9 record against top ten teams since 2008. While we were disappointed vy the South Carolina game, it was the Kentucky game which really frustrated me. I mean, that same afternoon Florida has beaten South Caroliina and the Dawgs played poorly against arguably the worst team in the SEC. Poorly on defense especially. Obviouslty Aaron had a career night and thank goodness for Conner Norman. So let’s put it together for the rest of this season and ALL enjoy it.

I’ve always been proud that Mark Richt is our coach. There are so many scumbags out there who only care about their own job and wins and losses. I have noticed that the negative idiots are having trouble finding anything intelligent to say!!! It is hard to bash a team that has beaten 3 ranked teams including #2 during the past 10 regular season games. And a team that has produced more Allstate Good Citizen Award winners than anyother college in history. And a program that hasn’t been on probation for decades. If what Georgia wants is a good coach who is well-liked and a mediocre team, then they should reduce the price of their tickets to $10 per seat, not ask for alumni contributions, and cut Richt’s salary to 1/10 of what it is now.
They are PAYING for a winning championship team and HAVE NOT BEEN GETTING IT!

OK, I agree that Auburn’s season this year isn’t going to help their recruiting.
I can’t agree that we “kicked Florida’s butt”, we won the game… that is a fact. It was a 1 point game with 7 minutes to go and then Florida had the ball inside our 3 yard line to try to tie the game up with 2 minutes to go. Not really the same thing as the 35-0 with 1 minute to go at USC.
Have we turned the corner? Not so sure looking at the last three games. Hope you are right.

@old dog 80….opon further review my honest opinion is coaching is not the problem this year….It has aaron murray’s turnovers and the defense having their head else where and maybe the soft schedule had the team a little un focused…..bobo has had a good year!! If murray can stop turning the ball over…the sky is the limit for us

Coach Richt is one of the most admired and respected men in all of college football. Yes, I want to win more too, but most of these people here have never played a down and it shows with some truly stupid and unrealistic statements. I am all in no matter what. 98% of college teams would LOVE to have Aaron Murray as their QB. I am proud of him and the rest of you can go to hell or go to Tech. Go Dawgs.
