Report: Florida strength coach shoved Georgia’s Corey Moore

Best account I’ve seen yet of the pregame skirmish that occurred before Georgia-Florida this past Saturday comes from Palm Beach Post reporter Jason Lieser.

I didn’t see but the very tail-end of the incident myself as it happened right around the time they were preparing for the pregame toss. But according to Lieser, Florida safety Matt Elam instigated the incident by bumping Georgia’s Devin Bowman. Apparently a bunch of Georgia players then responded to the taunts of Elam and teammate Dominique Easley, including Todd Gurley, Malcolm Mitchell, Corey Moore and Arthur Lynch.

Liesler reports that Florida strength coach Jeff Dillman interceded and ended up shoving Moore. That drew Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and some other assistant coaches and referees into the fray. This is the part I saw and skirmish quickly dissipated with both sides squawking as they went their separate ways.

Wrote Lieser:

Gators strength coach Jeff Dillman, who later had at least one very animated conversation with a ref, was involved as well. Dillman shoved Georgia safety Corey Moore, then got in the face of a Bulldogs assistant.

The whole affair was over in less than a minute and no penalties were assessed (though officials would make up for that later).

Georgia coach Mark Richt claimed on his Sunday conference call he knew nothing of the incident until seeing a vague reference to it on the TV broadcast replay.

“You know what, I don’t know what happened,” he said. “I watched the TV copy of the game  and they showed a little bit of that. You could tell there was some chirping and all that, but I don’t think anybody got physical or anything like that.”

Informed for Dillman’s shove and when it happened, Richt said: “I’d have to look at it. I’m not really worried about that right now.”

Grantham acknowledged the incident after the game but claimed he was merely telling the Georgia players to get out of the way. “I was telling our guys to get off the field,” he said.

The “chippiness” carried over into the game, where the teams combined to be flagged 24 times, including several personal foul penalties.

“That was one of the most intense games I’ve ever coached from start to finish,” Richt said. “. . . You want intensity with discipline. But I didn’t want to slow anybody’s ability to keep their blood hot.”

BTW the shove by the Gator coach is nothing – The guy was trying to seperate players so that a riot didn’t break out. Give me a break, I’m sure Corey Moore will be just fine. I love the Dawgs but I don’t think that coach owes anybody an apology.

Just FYI, the Big Twelve (now only ten teams) does not have a conference championship game this year.

MA English…..

Georgia rushed 7 and 8 players on every down….good strategy to stop Florida’s running game. Florida only had 5 and 6 blocking…and therefore Georgia was able to stop the running game and force Florida in to 3rd and long passing downs….something they are not currently good at.

Florida rushed only 3 and 4 most of the time….good strategy to stop Georgia’s passing game (and primarily why Florida did not sack Murray)…and Georgia blocked most of the day with 7 and 8…..keeping the TE and RBs in the blocking scheme. That would be 6, 7, and 8 people blocking 3 and 4 rushers. Still, Florida got pressure on Murray and forced him to hurry is throws….and therefore Georgia’s passing game was ineffective…except for that one big play.

So….both teams had excellent defenses and excellent strategies to stop the other team. Georgia just executed on offense a little better in key opportunities (Marshall vs. Reed basically).

Georgia won….and they deserved to win the game. I just do not understand so many of you talking down at Florida and the Florida coaches. But I have come to expect nothing less from some of you….and much beter from others. You know who you are….some wear class well and others do not have any.

Go Gators.

Well….then….someone beats K-State in the regular season. But I am not sure who that would be in that weak conference. Kansas State would have trouble moving the ball on any of the top five teams in the SEC. I have been very impressed with Notre Dame, however. They are very good.

TampaGator – good and bad fans regardless of the what team they pull for. My brother is a FL grad, I am UGA grad, Dad from AU and Mom from Tenn, so I know all sides. You’re are correct – GA made a few more plays – next year will be a different game and it will come down to the same thing, which team makes a few more plays. Stay classy – ignore the haters. Good luck to you guys for the rest of the season.

Time for “honey does”….see ya….and good luck vs. Ole Miss. I honestly hope Georgia wins out and goes to the SEC title game. You earned it with the win…and now go justify that win by winning out.

Go Gators….and good day.

@Swamp Donkey- I am pretty sure that opening with Clemmons will be considered one of the tougher opening games next year and 3 of the 1st 4 games are against ranked teams (currently). Maybe change your name to SWAMP DOUCHE

I’ve got news for all of you. ALABAMA is NOT unbeatable. I’ve seen them play. They have weaknesses just like the rest of the best. Right now they are surviving on a weak schedule and intimidation. If a team can get past the intimidation factor (and LSU is one) they can be beat man to man.

TampaGator,

Gators has a chance in NC, as gators are the best team in the East.

You have one close loss, while UGA has an ugly loss to a team gators beat badly. On top of that, gators’ schedule is much more impressive than UGA’s.

Yes, gators have a better chance than UGA does in my book.

Huh?

@Alphare- I think you must mean the Sugar Bowl and not the NC. For FL to have a chance, LSU, UGA and Alabama all have to lose AND 2 of out of these 3( ND, OR, and K State) would have to lose too. Oh yeah- gotta beat FSU 1st. While UGA may have a slim chance to win, FL has none.

I think it was in the second quarter (after Fla fumbled and recovered), but I saw Mark Richt really get in the face of the refs – he was as more mad than I have ever seen him (actually a welcome show of emotion), but does anyone know what he was mad about?

just sayin'

From a totally objective viewpoint…it was a very sloppy game on both sides of the ball. Impressed with the intensity, but not the ability. Neither looked like a top 10 team.

If one of UGA’s coaches did this it would be all over the media. The media would be asking for the coach to resign.

lots of interesting banter , Tampa you sound pretty knowledgeable, good luck the rest of the way, have to agree Ol Miss could be trouble if overlooked or overconfidence coming in in top 10 sets the tone, doubt it though, they got a good taste of that earlier in Columbia, SC and look out for Bama, not many weaknesses there I see, they haven`t played a strong defense yet but have allowed quite a few sacks on the SEC stat sheet. that seems suspect with their O line though, we`ll see hopefully. Many think losing to Bama in the champ game would send UGA to Outback or Cap1, personally they should deserve NO but that`s politics. Got enough of that going on anyway right now I`d say. JArvis for Pres, at least he does what he says and packs a wallop!

I won’t call you an idiot because that’s too obvious, which I don’t bother to repeat.

Gators’ chance 1.1/100, UGA’s chance 1.0/100, since 1.1>1.0, …

So much Whine, so little time…just can’t get to it all…
Bottom line, play one game at a time starting with ole Miss. Focus, cutdown turnovers and stupid penalties and avoid injuries. Piss the Defense off before every remaining game…

If the Dawgs were to slip up on Alabama, I doubt that they would vault to the BCS Championship game. I don’t think anybody is going to put Georgia at 1 or 2 unless the Dawgs blew out Alabama. Also any time ND is in the top 4 they are going to end up playing for the championship. I’m just sayin….but, GO DAWGS!

I am tired of our offensive coaches (Bobo)
Inability to adjust at halftime. They look like geniuses against weaker defenses but lack the knowledge and experience to figure out good defenses. I would like some creativity and newness to our offense. CMR cleaned house on defense a few years ago and he needs to do the same on offense. Go Dawgs!
