UGA jumps to No. 6 in BCS standings

Georgia soared to No. 6 in this week’s Bowl Championship Series standings after Saturday’s victory over previously No. 2 Florida.

Ranked No. 10 last week, the Bulldogs also benefited from losses by three other teams that had been ahead of them in the BCS standings — Oregon State, Oklahoma and USC.

Alabama remained a solid No. 1 in the latest set of standings, released Sunday night. Kansas State moved up one spot to replace Florida at No. 2. Notre Dame jumped two spots to No. 3, while Oregon remained No. 4. The top four teams are undefeated.

Four SEC teams fill the Nos. 5 through 8 positions this week — LSU, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina in that order. LSU, Georgia and Florida have one loss apiece. South Carolina has two losses.

The top two teams in the BCS standings after the regular season and conference championship games will meet for the national title Jan. 7 in Miami.

In addition to Georgia’s upset win over Florida, other movers of the BCS standings this week were Oregon State’s loss to Washington, Oklahoma’s loss at home to Notre Dame and USC’s loss to Arizona. Oregon State dropped from No. 7 last week to No. 11 this week, while Oklahoma fell from No. 8 to No. 12 and USC from No. 9 to No. 17.

This week’s schedule features more games that will be important in shaping the BCS standings — particularly Saturday night’s SEC West showdown in Baton Rouge between Alabama and LSU, a rematch of last season’s national title game. Also this week, Kansas State is at home against Oklahoma State and Oregon plays at USC.

The BCS standings, often controversial, include three components, each counting one-third: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls.

Oregon is ranked No. 2 (behind Alabama) in the USA Today and Harris polls, as well as in the Associated Press media poll, which is not part of the BCS formula.

But the Ducks are behind Kansas State and Notre Dame, trailing the latter by just .0011 point, in the BCS standings because their strength of schedule thus far has resulted in a lower ranking from the six computers. Kansas State and Notre Dame are tied for No. 1 in average computer ranking, while Oregon is No. 5.

Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) also moved up sharply Sunday in the Associated Press poll, climbing five spots to No. 7, and USA Today poll, up five spots to No. 6.

The Bulldogs, who have won 17 of 18 regular-season games since starting 0-2 last season, play Ole Miss in Athens at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be Georgia’s second in a row to be nationally televised on CBS.

The BCS standings will be updated each Sunday through the remainder of the regular season and again after the conference championship games.

Rarely do teams play the number 2 and number 1 ranked team in the same year. But if we make it to Atlanta and beat Bama then it would be a travesty if we don’t play for the NC after beating number 1 and 2 in the same season.

Who’s going to step up and call out the offense? It can’t be Murray as he is the problem. May Richt should send him a message and not start his this week.

Congratulations to the team for climbing back into contention. As they say, Georgia controls its destiny.

There was a time when I would have looked at the possibility of us backing into the championship game as shameful, but I believe our team has earned our respect by playing with such intensity and heart in the recent Florida game.

I know we all want to see Georgia win every game from here to the finish line. We’re in a great spot to move up if we keep winning, and have a shot at the national title. It’s a lot to even be a bit hopeful for, and a lot of things would have to fall into place, but it’s not even remotely possible unless the team maintains intensity, and becomes more disciplined. It’s up to the players now.

Go, Dawgs.

I’m so thankful we won the game.

But let’s not kid ourselves about the coaching staff. One solid win against a great team (that couldn’t get out of their own way, mind you) doesn’t undo many years of failing to show up for big games. I am thrilled we won this game. I will be singing from the rooftops if we make it to Atlanta and beat Alabama/LSU. If somehow, some way, we make it to Miami and hoist that crystal trophy, I won’t know what to do with myself.

And yet, it won’t restore my confidence in the coaching staff. I’ll still be waiting for the next big game that we come out flat and go down by 20+ points in no time at all, or the late-game collapse that seems to happen with alarming regularity. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t be calling for the coach’s head, but neither will I have confidence in him. If that seems strange to you, just look across the state line at Auburn’s mess. Hopefully we won’t fall that far, but we can’t have any hopes of sustained success either. The next big blowout loss is just around the corner, I’m afraid. The worst part is, that fear won’t ever go away with the current situation.

But I love my Dawgs and my alma mater! It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!

To clarify my previous post (before people start saying I’m not a true fan), I’m not calling for the coaching staff to be replaced, I’m simply expressing my lack of confidence that they can produce these results on a regular basis.

On a more positive note, I’m thankful that we have a coach who will round up the team and pray for other injured players, like our boys did this past week for Marcus Lattimore prior to our game. That’s true character, right there.

Sorry HAIRY DAWGS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,But you will not be able to get to the BCS Championship game with that embarassing loss to South Carolina.

South Carolina has laid an egg 3 games in a row. Even though they beat Tennessee, they only won by 3 points .And we know that Tenn. is a very bad team.

That loss is a killer for you. Also Florida apparently was not that stong.

No way could Florida nor UGA beat either BAMA or LSU with all the mistakes that both made vs. each other.

You had the schedule setup perfectly and you blew it with that loss.

I’ll be holding my breath, though, should we make it to the SEC championship game. If, I said, if, we win that, then who knows where we go? And, although Mitchell needs to keep his emotions in check, big “ups” to him for making a play Saturday when we really needed it, especially after that stupid penalty. But for that matter, big “ups” to the entire team and coaching staff. Go Dawgs!!! Just don’t let up against Ole Miss.

Couldn’t have said it better myself Lenny. I would however disagree with you on one thing though. I have absolutely no confidence in Mark Richt. I want him GONE. I was a staunch Mark Richt backer right up to that South Carolina debacle. One game doesn’t even begin to make up for him past failures. Crap, Mark Richt should have been the one to call this team out. It shouldn’t have had to fall on the shoulders of one of his players. Maybe he should hire Williams as defensive coach? If the the defense finishes the season as it did against Florida I just might and that is a big might, back off a little. I’d be more impressed if he would get that weak arse Arron Murray off the field.

Here I am boys to accept all of the krap you want to throw. I picked The Dawgs to lose big by 35 points. I NEVER thought The Dawgs could beat UF. I was wrong.

Despite UF giving The Dawgs every possible chance to put this game away early, the O absolutely blew it until the fourth qtr. No first downs until the fourth qtr and it was the stellar D that won this game.

Bobo cannot playcall worth moosedik and Murray had a bad day until the end (though the receivers dropped several passes).

Imagine if the O and the D could both show up for four qtrs on the same gameday. It would be something to see (I mean against a team other than Vandy).

Living in Fla I am EXTREMELY GLAD to see The Dawgs beat The Gators. But Bobo stinks on ice and Richt has not proven he is a capable SEC HC to me.

If they take care of business the rest of the way, it is realistic that UGA could make the NC game…

Can they beat ‘Bama?? Not likely, but if their defense plays like they are capable of, and the offense plays like they are capable of, they absolutely can…

Think about it… #6 currently… LSU loses this week to RTR and we move up to 5…

Oregon loses to Stanford or Oregon State and UGA moves up to #4…

Notre Dame loses to USC the last week of the season and UGA moves up to #3…

Beat a unanimous #1 Alabama team in the SEC championship, and we move into at least the #2 slot…

Yes, a lot of moving parts to happen, but who thought a few weeks ago that we would even be in this position?? If they will take care of their business and then find a way to beat the Tide, they will find themselves playing for the championship against K-State – guaranteed!

The only thing I have to say is if anybody strives to be the best team the team must be consistantly up each week and not get into a trap with another good team and not play their best each week. Simple but to get that good the teams have to be precise. When it gets down to two last teams they both have done so and ready to play great games…Unless turnovers and mistakes all show up at the same time. Georgia needs this consistancy. You cannot play like your hair is on fire one week and take off the next week vs anyone. Georgia could have lost to Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky because of their inconsistant play….Hopefully this will not be a factor vs Ole Miss.

For all of you talking about the sloppy play of the offenses (both of them) the defenses of FL and UGA had a lot to do with that. FL ’s defense has played well all year and after getting all the pieces in place UGA is finally showing what it is capable of producing. All the penalties were bad but you just knew after the pre game fight it was going to be that kind of day. Emotions play a big part and these two teams really don’t like one another. Some were just stupid (Mitchell jawing after the fact) but they are just part of the game. Once upon a time long ago when I played I faced a guy who was all everything. I made a tiny movement because of being so keyed up. I made the block but we had a touchdown called back. We eventually won but I had to stay keyed up just to stay on the field with this guy.
I will have to admit I was calling for Richt to resign after the KY game. Still feel he is not enough of the emotional motivator he needs to be but not sure if there is anyone better out there. I did notice him getting in a few faces Saturday. I just hope out we win out and get to play in the Dome. My best friend is a Rolll Tide and called to gongratulate me after our win. He does not like the fact they might have to play us. I told him I can’t think of a scenario where we could win but stranger things happen. That’s why the game is played on the field.
For all of you who want Richt gone give me candidates who would really better. Please trolls no tongue in answers. I already know all the trite responses. There is no cure or stupid.

Enjoy this one folks. Especially knowing that all the usual Richt-haters and Florida trolls that regularly post here can’t say anything. UGA was the better team Saturday, plain and simple.

Why is it that no one is talking about the fact that Florida didn’t score a touchdown? Funny how the Florida fans won’t say anything about that, but if they do, they’ll say it is because the turned the ball over so much. They won’t say that all of those turnovers were forced. Excuses for everything.

The media seems to love Florida — they came out of everywhere to pump them up to number 2, when Florida really struggled to beat everyone — including South Carolina.

Good lord folks, lay off Murray. Last week some people had Driskel in their Heisman list and he didn’t play any better than Murray did.

Driskel had 3 fumbles in the 1st quarter and threw 2 interceptions in the game. Also, his completion rate and yardage were nearly the same as Murray’s. However, he did not throw a TD.

I think both QBs looked bad. It was a tough game with a lot of big defensive stops. But Murray only threw one INT really and that one made no sense — he threw it in the middle of the field with no UGA player within 15 yards. That one must have been a busted play. The other two INTs were off deflections.

If everyone is disappointed that we didn’t hang 48 points on Florida, I am with you there. We certainly should have. They looked lousy most of the game. If you want to blame Murray though, then you aren’t thinking clearly.

YES – I am EATING CROW!!!

I am still not sold on where UGA should be as a team and a program and I still think mediocrity between the hedges is unacceptable. UGA and between the hedges should be one of footballs crown jewels.

A lot of work left to do – and I hope to see UGA in the DOME!

@ Russ is Top Dawg – you have the right idea – Sanford needs to be rocking this Saturday.

UGA’s great victory over Florida could launch this team to another level.

Here are some of my thoughts about the win over Flroida:
1. This was a game that UGA would lose in years pass.
2. UGA MADE plays to win this game.
3. Losers out there are playing “what if” – but each game takes on it’s own personality and as Spurrier said – is unique amongst itself. No sense is saying Florida should have won or if Florida had not done this or that …. or had done this or that. The point is – they didn’t and UGA did. So UGA won the game and deservedly so.
In this game – a lot of trash talking and penalties – but this is one of the premier games and rivalries in all of college football – and a lot on the line this year – very emotional and high tension.
4. Where has UGA’s defense been all year and why did it take a player to motivate the unit?
5. Aaron Murray hung in there and made it happen when he had to – but what a horrible game and very poor decisions. He is a work in progress.

6. Auburn had 63 points hung on them and will go winless in sec play this year! (just had to write that in here)!

Buckeye, too bad The Free Tatts U doesn’t play Auburn this year, you might could break out of your failures with the SEC.

I love how all of you are automatically assuming you are going to be playing Bama in the SEC championship. Two things must happen for that to come true. One, UGA must win out in the conference. Two, Bama MUST beat LSU this weekend. Keep in mind that LSU hasn’t lost a home game at night since 2008! My money is on LSU representing the west.

Somebody needs to tell Murray we are playing UK or UT again this Saturday, so he will start throwing the ball to OUR guys again.

What was up with those INTs Saturday? That last one, he took his time, and he had plenty of time, stepped up and threw it 15′ over the receiver’s head.

Unbelievable that Murray could be so amazingly accurate one week (UK) then so inaccurate a week later.

It may be a home vs road thing with him . . .

@ Sal – LSU could pull the upset – they have a tremendous Defense and they are extremely tough to play at Death Valley. However, LSU QB play has not been good this year – I do not think they have the offense to beat Bama this year.
Time will tell – but you could be right – but thinking Bama will win this game pretty convincingly.
Nothing but respect for LSU.

@ Joey – what was up with Murray’s 3 INT’s? He was trying to force downfield throws that were not there – bad decsisions against a great defense. He choked.
However, this game played out to be a defenseive battle – and Murray lead the team on a drive throwing the ball – when it counted most.

Notre Dame has played a vastly overrated Oklahoma team, a vastly overrated Michigan team and Stanford. FSU and Clemson, the two teams right behind the Dawgs, have beaten no one of consequence. Only Kansas State and LSU can claim to have played anyone (although K State beat the same overrated Oklahoma team and an also overrated West Virginia team). Where would you put the Dawgs? Sure, they had a bad game against South Carolina. No, Saturday’s game was not pretty. But, really, can you make a definitive case that they are not the sixth best team in the nation right now? I was a staunch Mark Richt backer right up to that South Carolina debacle. One game doesn’t even begin to make up for him past failures. Crap, Mark Richt should have been the one to call this team out. It shouldn’t have had to fall on the shoulders of one of his players. Maybe he should hire Williams as defensive coach? If the the defense finishes the season as it did against Florida I just might and that is a big might, back off a little. I’d be more impressed if he would get that weak arse Arron Murray off the field.

@ marquis de Mercury:

JJ made the decision to come back when he could have jumped to the NFL(still has another year of eligibility) and several others followed his lead. What we all saw Saturday was what we expected from our D but had not seen it all year until Saturday.

Apparently several prominent D players were following advice such as yours and got called on it by Shawn Wiliiams thereby creating the activity of our D’s Saturday performance. It is really devastating when an injury such as Willis McGahee and Lattimore suffered but both overcame the injuries and McGahee is still getting it done today in Denver. Lattimore’s Saturday injury, while hopefully is not as bad as his last year’s injury, very likely can also be overcome but the mental impact on Lattimore will be huge because he still has it fresh in his mind what a huge job it will be to try to regain his playing ability.

I believe there is insurance available for those who can afford it or maybe can get a sponsor although the cost may be excessive and would be a poor second to playing in the NFL and earning the really big bucks.

You make a good point but I believe one can be seriously injured while playing “SOFT” D and soft D, O and Special teams will not be accepted by the sports world. I credit Shawn Williams and JJ for saturday’s win but basically most of our D had really good games

When all is said and done there are NO OBVIOUS SOLUTIONS/GUARANTEES TO CHOOSE FROM!!!!!

Georgia is going to pay the price of two SEC teams playing in the national championship last year. Even if the Bulldogs beat a number 1 Bama team after beating a #2 Florida team, they are not going to leapfrog an undefeated Kansas State/Oregon/Notre Dame team. It is going to be bad enough if those three teams end up undefeated. Then imagine if Ohio State was eligible? The Dawgs picked the wrong year to lose to SC and the best they can hope for is an SEC championship.

With todays SEC schedules, UGA will never do that. But we do because LSU is our permanent SEC West opponent and BAMA will rotate in there ever so often. Surely, you can show a small degree of empathy and be glad FOR the coaching staff for winning this game, as well. Obviously those guys work thier tails off, and its not an easy job.

As far as anybody acting like its a national championship……really? Has anybody that you really even notice what they think, said that? Why would you care if they want to predend that.
