UGA jumps to No. 6 in BCS standings

Georgia soared to No. 6 in this week’s Bowl Championship Series standings after Saturday’s victory over previously No. 2 Florida.

Ranked No. 10 last week, the Bulldogs also benefited from losses by three other teams that had been ahead of them in the BCS standings — Oregon State, Oklahoma and USC.

Alabama remained a solid No. 1 in the latest set of standings, released Sunday night. Kansas State moved up one spot to replace Florida at No. 2. Notre Dame jumped two spots to No. 3, while Oregon remained No. 4. The top four teams are undefeated.

Four SEC teams fill the Nos. 5 through 8 positions this week — LSU, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina in that order. LSU, Georgia and Florida have one loss apiece. South Carolina has two losses.

The top two teams in the BCS standings after the regular season and conference championship games will meet for the national title Jan. 7 in Miami.

In addition to Georgia’s upset win over Florida, other movers of the BCS standings this week were Oregon State’s loss to Washington, Oklahoma’s loss at home to Notre Dame and USC’s loss to Arizona. Oregon State dropped from No. 7 last week to No. 11 this week, while Oklahoma fell from No. 8 to No. 12 and USC from No. 9 to No. 17.

This week’s schedule features more games that will be important in shaping the BCS standings — particularly Saturday night’s SEC West showdown in Baton Rouge between Alabama and LSU, a rematch of last season’s national title game. Also this week, Kansas State is at home against Oklahoma State and Oregon plays at USC.

The BCS standings, often controversial, include three components, each counting one-third: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls.

Oregon is ranked No. 2 (behind Alabama) in the USA Today and Harris polls, as well as in the Associated Press media poll, which is not part of the BCS formula.

But the Ducks are behind Kansas State and Notre Dame, trailing the latter by just .0011 point, in the BCS standings because their strength of schedule thus far has resulted in a lower ranking from the six computers. Kansas State and Notre Dame are tied for No. 1 in average computer ranking, while Oregon is No. 5.

Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) also moved up sharply Sunday in the Associated Press poll, climbing five spots to No. 7, and USA Today poll, up five spots to No. 6.

The Bulldogs, who have won 17 of 18 regular-season games since starting 0-2 last season, play Ole Miss in Athens at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be Georgia’s second in a row to be nationally televised on CBS.

The BCS standings will be updated each Sunday through the remainder of the regular season and again after the conference championship games.

Snake Bitten GA: my thoughts exactly. It doesn’t seem to matter what Georgia does/does not do, they still won’t get in to the big one. The BCS is a beauty contest, and Georgia is like the ugly girl nobody wants to be at the dance, or dance with.

Question - Where are the GA Haters?

KDP – “Your comment about UGA getting to play the #1 and # 2 teams in the same year is way off base. Check out UF’s schedule last year – played BAMA & LSU back to back. With todays SEC schedules, UGA will never do that. But we do because LSU is our permanent SEC West opponent and BAMA will rotate in there ever so often. Check out your facts before posting – had you played those two teams last year, USCe would have won the SEC East and saved you the humilation of the SEC Championship against LSU. But that’s history – and this is a new year.

Swamp Thing: is that any more laughable than Alabama not even playing in the SECCG, yet winning the NC? That was the point I was making by saying the BCS is a beauty contest.

The purpose of the BCS is to match the top 2 teams at the end of the year. Georgia hasn’t had a top 2 team in over thirty years. Still don’t.

FLA DAWG, I am really surprised that you are so pizzed off this week. I never expected you to be heading up a coach of the year campaign, didn’t even blame you for betting that UF would win. But jeez guy. Even for you, this is a pretty hard to understand responce. Weren’t you the a guy who once said that beating UF was ALL that matters. Then, when that one didn’t count, beating UF twice is ALL that matters. I mean you had to feel just a touch of joy in that, didn’t you?

Seriously, nobody would think less of you to enjoy it for a day or so. We understand you are not a fan of the current coach.

So, I’m thinking Alabama is better off losing to LSU again this week. That way they don’t have to play in the SEC championship game, get an extra week of rest, etc. Definitely an advantage to lose that game…don’t see a bunch of teams going undefeated this season.

Love my dawgs. Glad they won. Still don’t think much of Richt & Co. for the long haul.

He’s your coach if #1 in the SEC East and the Capital One bowl is enough for you. Personally, I have greater aspirations for UGA.

No NC with Richt. Never.

Alta,

Read the bottom of pg 1.

I couldn’t be more pleased that I was wrong and The Dawgs beat UF.
But to read some of the comments you’d think The BCS Title was in the bag!
And I continue to believe Richt & Bobo will screw it up again big time.

His wins have been purely accidental. He has no leadership skills. We need a coach with more moxie — a real man that we can be proud of.

Well, I don’t doubt that you are pleased to win the game.I am sure of it. However , when you very first entry into the blogs sounded more like winning the game was almost an afterthought that you reluctantly mention, in the middle of trashing the coaching staff, its not wonder some of these guys took offense.

Surely, you can show a small degree of empathy and be glad FOR the coaching staff for winning this game, as well. Obviously those guys work thier tails off, and its not an easy job.

As far as anybody acting like its a national championship……really? Has anybody that you really even notice what they think, said that? Why would you care if they want to predend that. Mostly, what I’ve seen is some tech fans saying anything about it meaning anything more than it did. they love a good straw man. The vast majority of Georgia fans are rightfully talking about respecting Ole Miss.

Fladawg, I am assuming u are addressing those who believe Coach Richt is the man for the job! Well thank you I am one! Love the dawgs and even when we had donnan and Goff I would never spend the week after beating the # 2 team who also beat LSU # 2 @ the time and South Carolina Top Ten @ the time! Just like the monkey fell on his back in 2008 with the Alabama game it is falling off with this one! Yes we are not champions and haven’t won east yet but man this feels good. Huge homecoming!!!!
