Georgia soared to No. 6 in this week’s Bowl Championship Series standings after Saturday’s victory over previously No. 2 Florida.
Ranked No. 10 last week, the Bulldogs also benefited from losses by three other teams that had been ahead of them in the BCS standings — Oregon State, Oklahoma and USC.
Alabama remained a solid No. 1 in the latest set of standings, released Sunday night. Kansas State moved up one spot to replace Florida at No. 2. Notre Dame jumped two spots to No. 3, while Oregon remained No. 4. The top four teams are undefeated.
Four SEC teams fill the Nos. 5 through 8 positions this week — LSU, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina in that order. LSU, Georgia and Florida have one loss apiece. South Carolina has two losses.
The top two teams in the BCS standings after the regular season and conference championship games will meet for the national title Jan. 7 in Miami.
In addition to Georgia’s upset win over Florida, other movers of the BCS standings this week were Oregon State’s loss to Washington, Oklahoma’s loss at home to Notre Dame and USC’s loss to Arizona. Oregon State dropped from No. 7 last week to No. 11 this week, while Oklahoma fell from No. 8 to No. 12 and USC from No. 9 to No. 17.
This week’s schedule features more games that will be important in shaping the BCS standings — particularly Saturday night’s SEC West showdown in Baton Rouge between Alabama and LSU, a rematch of last season’s national title game. Also this week, Kansas State is at home against Oklahoma State and Oregon plays at USC.
The BCS standings, often controversial, include three components, each counting one-third: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls.
Oregon is ranked No. 2 (behind Alabama) in the USA Today and Harris polls, as well as in the Associated Press media poll, which is not part of the BCS formula.
But the Ducks are behind Kansas State and Notre Dame, trailing the latter by just .0011 point, in the BCS standings because their strength of schedule thus far has resulted in a lower ranking from the six computers. Kansas State and Notre Dame are tied for No. 1 in average computer ranking, while Oregon is No. 5.
Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) also moved up sharply Sunday in the Associated Press poll, climbing five spots to No. 7, and USA Today poll, up five spots to No. 6.
The Bulldogs, who have won 17 of 18 regular-season games since starting 0-2 last season, play Ole Miss in Athens at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be Georgia’s second in a row to be nationally televised on CBS.
The BCS standings will be updated each Sunday through the remainder of the regular season and again after the conference championship games.

6th in the nation?? Give me a break. Who have they played other than South Carolina (LOST) and Florida (WON). They have beaten ONE ranked team and they are 6th in the nation. Doesn’t anyone consider the opposition records? There ARE only three teams on their schedule that have a winning record and one of those is Georgia Southern! The combined record of Georgia’s opponents currently is 45-53!!! This is ridiculous.

I’m happy for the win over Florida … but how does UGA get just manhandled by south Carolina then wins ugly over Kentucky and Florida and lands back at #6?
Cue that Smiths song “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” .

Florida, please don’t fire your coach! He is great and has restored order to the rivalry. Not to mention, his sideline facial expressions are worth the price of admission.

Maybe GA’s opposition should step it up notch then. Maybe those teams should start winning THEIR games.

Lad Dawg, I actually thought BooBoo called a pretty good game ! Need to distinguish between a “bad call” and “bad execution” by the player(s).
Just because it didnt work doesnt make it a bad call.

Homeboy, how many other teams are really better? Who has Alabama played? Michigan and Mississippi State? Meh. How about Oregon? They’ve really only played Arizona. Notre Dame has played a vastly overrated Oklahoma team, a vastly overrated Michigan team and Stanford. FSU and Clemson, the two teams right behind the Dawgs, have beaten no one of consequence. Only Kansas State and LSU can claim to have played anyone (although K State beat the same overrated Oklahoma team and an also overrated West Virginia team). Where would you put the Dawgs? Sure, they had a bad game against South Carolina. No, Saturday’s game was not pretty. But, really, can you make a definitive case that they are not the sixth best team in the nation right now? I couldn’t. I’m not a Richt fan, but the man can recruit and these Dawgs are talented and deserve this ranking.

A couple of observations from Saturday’s game, Everyone saying FL gave UGA the game with TOs…..I believe someone actually caused those TOs with outstanding defensive play. Secondly, UGAs WRs were not getting separation on their routes….the FL DBs were doing a good job. They also dropped a number of passes. Sure would like to have Bennett back.

Couldn’t have said it better myself Lenny. I would however disagree with you on one thing though. I have absolutely no confidence in Mark Richt. I want him GONE. I was a staunch Mark Richt backer right up to that South Carolina debacle. One game doesn’t even begin to make up for him past failures. Crap, Mark Richt should have been the one to call this team out. It shouldn’t have had to fall on the shoulders of one of his players. Maybe he should hire Williams as defensive coach? If the the defense finishes the season as it did against Florida I just might and that is a big might, back off a little. I’d be more impressed if he would get that weak arse Arron Murray off the field.
Tdawg so you let one bad game turn you against CMR, however when he has a great win you say one does not make up for the past. You’re a Nut!!!!

they don’t deserve their ranking. it was a gimmie game to an over rated fla. team. la . beat themselves and murrary showed again that he is not the great quarterback dog fans think he is. if it wasn’t for a 45 yard pass he just barley gets over 100 yards passing plus 3 ints. not very good performance again against a half decent team.

@ marquis de Mercury:
JJ made the decision to come back when he could have jumped to the NFL(still has another year of eligibility) and several others followed his lead. What we all saw Saturday was what we expected from our D but had not seen it all year until Saturday.
Apparently several prominent D players were following advice such as yours and got called on it by Shawn Wiliiams thereby creating the activity of our D’s Saturday performance. It is really devastating when an injury such as Willis McGahee and Lattimore suffered but both overcame the injuries and McGahee is still getting it done today in Denver. Lattimore’s Saturday injury, while hopefully is not as bad as his last year’s injury, very likely can also be overcome but the mental impact on Lattimore will be huge because he still has it fresh in his mind what a huge job it will be to try to regain his playing ability.
I believe there is insurance available for those who can afford it or maybe can get a sponsor although the cost may be excessive and would be a poor second to playing in the NFL and earning the really big bucks.
You make a good point but I believe one can be seriously injured while playing “SOFT” D and soft D, O and Special teams will not be accepted by the sports world. I credit Shawn Williams and JJ for saturday’s win but basically most of our D had really good games
When all is said and done there are NO OBVIOUS SOLUTIONS/GUARANTEES TO CHOOSE FROM!!!!!

Aaron “rubberlegs” murray still doesn”t know who his playmakers are.thats why he struggles. he tries to force the ball to people who can”t consistantly make plays.someone please tell him to get the ball to the recievers who can”t turn the game around.murray is more worried about keeping people happy instead of getting ball in the hands of the people who can break the game over.still, i”m not convinced you can win championships with murray

Georgia is going to pay the price of two SEC teams playing in the national championship last year. Even if the Bulldogs beat a number 1 Bama team after beating a #2 Florida team, they are not going to leapfrog an undefeated Kansas State/Oregon/Notre Dame team. It is going to be bad enough if those three teams end up undefeated. Then imagine if Ohio State was eligible? The Dawgs picked the wrong year to lose to SC and the best they can hope for is an SEC championship.
Stranger things have happened, I do not see K-state losing but Oregon and ND have possibilities.
