UGA jumps to No. 6 in BCS standings

Georgia soared to No. 6 in this week’s Bowl Championship Series standings after Saturday’s victory over previously No. 2 Florida.

Ranked No. 10 last week, the Bulldogs also benefited from losses by three other teams that had been ahead of them in the BCS standings — Oregon State, Oklahoma and USC.

Alabama remained a solid No. 1 in the latest set of standings, released Sunday night. Kansas State moved up one spot to replace Florida at No. 2. Notre Dame jumped two spots to No. 3, while Oregon remained No. 4. The top four teams are undefeated.

Four SEC teams fill the Nos. 5 through 8 positions this week — LSU, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina in that order. LSU, Georgia and Florida have one loss apiece. South Carolina has two losses.

The top two teams in the BCS standings after the regular season and conference championship games will meet for the national title Jan. 7 in Miami.

In addition to Georgia’s upset win over Florida, other movers of the BCS standings this week were Oregon State’s loss to Washington, Oklahoma’s loss at home to Notre Dame and USC’s loss to Arizona. Oregon State dropped from No. 7 last week to No. 11 this week, while Oklahoma fell from No. 8 to No. 12 and USC from No. 9 to No. 17.

This week’s schedule features more games that will be important in shaping the BCS standings — particularly Saturday night’s SEC West showdown in Baton Rouge between Alabama and LSU, a rematch of last season’s national title game. Also this week, Kansas State is at home against Oklahoma State and Oregon plays at USC.

The BCS standings, often controversial, include three components, each counting one-third: the USA Today poll of current coaches; the Harris Interactive poll of former coaches, administrators and players and current and former media members; and an average of six computer polls.

Oregon is ranked No. 2 (behind Alabama) in the USA Today and Harris polls, as well as in the Associated Press media poll, which is not part of the BCS formula.

But the Ducks are behind Kansas State and Notre Dame, trailing the latter by just .0011 point, in the BCS standings because their strength of schedule thus far has resulted in a lower ranking from the six computers. Kansas State and Notre Dame are tied for No. 1 in average computer ranking, while Oregon is No. 5.

Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) also moved up sharply Sunday in the Associated Press poll, climbing five spots to No. 7, and USA Today poll, up five spots to No. 6.

The Bulldogs, who have won 17 of 18 regular-season games since starting 0-2 last season, play Ole Miss in Athens at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be Georgia’s second in a row to be nationally televised on CBS.

The BCS standings will be updated each Sunday through the remainder of the regular season and again after the conference championship games.

If they take care of business the rest of the way, it is realistic that UGA could make the NC game…

Can they beat ‘Bama?? Not likely, but if their defense plays like they are capable of, and the offense plays like they are capable of, they absolutely can…

Think about it… #6 currently… LSU loses this week to RTR and we move up to 5…

Oregon loses to Stanford or Oregon State and UGA moves up to #4…

Notre Dame loses to USC the last week of the season and UGA moves up to #3…

Beat a unanimous #1 Alabama team in the SEC championship, and we move into at least the #2 slot…

Yes, a lot of moving parts to happen, but who thought a few weeks ago that we would even be in this position?? If they will take care of their business and then find a way to beat the Tide, they will find themselves playing for the championship against K-State – guaranteed!

Hey Buzz – even if you had pulled it out against power house Middle Tennessee State – you would still have four losses. Must be tough to be so ashamed of your own team that you have to come here to post. Maybe some day Tech will be relevant – but not as long as you continue to believe the triple option is the way to go!

The only thing I have to say is if anybody strives to be the best team the team must be consistantly up each week and not get into a trap with another good team and not play their best each week. Simple but to get that good the teams have to be precise. When it gets down to two last teams they both have done so and ready to play great games…Unless turnovers and mistakes all show up at the same time. Georgia needs this consistancy. You cannot play like your hair is on fire one week and take off the next week vs anyone. Georgia could have lost to Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky because of their inconsistant play….Hopefully this will not be a factor vs Ole Miss.

For all of you talking about the sloppy play of the offenses (both of them) the defenses of FL and UGA had a lot to do with that. FL ’s defense has played well all year and after getting all the pieces in place UGA is finally showing what it is capable of producing. All the penalties were bad but you just knew after the pre game fight it was going to be that kind of day. Emotions play a big part and these two teams really don’t like one another. Some were just stupid (Mitchell jawing after the fact) but they are just part of the game. Once upon a time long ago when I played I faced a guy who was all everything. I made a tiny movement because of being so keyed up. I made the block but we had a touchdown called back. We eventually won but I had to stay keyed up just to stay on the field with this guy.
I will have to admit I was calling for Richt to resign after the KY game. Still feel he is not enough of the emotional motivator he needs to be but not sure if there is anyone better out there. I did notice him getting in a few faces Saturday. I just hope out we win out and get to play in the Dome. My best friend is a Rolll Tide and called to gongratulate me after our win. He does not like the fact they might have to play us. I told him I can’t think of a scenario where we could win but stranger things happen. That’s why the game is played on the field.
For all of you who want Richt gone give me candidates who would really better. Please trolls no tongue in answers. I already know all the trite responses. There is no cure or stupid.

Nobody hates Richt, just his coaching sometimes.

This program should be doing better than it has for about 4 years now.

1 of 11 on third down conversions
14 penalties
3 INT’s by our QB

This was one game we survived. Let’s see what happens in the future

I thought Murray looked like crap against Florida. He has yet to show up in a big game and perform like he’s capable of performing. Not sure if it’s a confidence thing or if he gets too hyped up, but he’s been playing too long to come out and play as bad as he did.

What I like also is how we have 4-5 weeks to really get this team fine tuned with everyone back and practicing together… I also like how Murray came back in the 2nd half and played pretty much a flawless half with no mistakes while throwing the winning TD pass…. It has to help his confidence…

I must say the defense played inspired football and won the game. As for the offense much of the same. Still don’t understand why it took one of the players to get this team motivated. I see UGA winning out losing to Alabama and playing in the Capital One Bowl again. Not really what I wanted as a Georgia fan.

Enjoy this one folks. Especially knowing that all the usual Richt-haters and Florida trolls that regularly post here can’t say anything. UGA was the better team Saturday, plain and simple.

Why is it that no one is talking about the fact that Florida didn’t score a touchdown? Funny how the Florida fans won’t say anything about that, but if they do, they’ll say it is because the turned the ball over so much. They won’t say that all of those turnovers were forced. Excuses for everything.

The media seems to love Florida — they came out of everywhere to pump them up to number 2, when Florida really struggled to beat everyone — including South Carolina.

Just remember Florida fans — UGA owns you now. We won 2 out of the last 3 and you got luck and beat us in OT on that one.

Good lord folks, lay off Murray. Last week some people had Driskel in their Heisman list and he didn’t play any better than Murray did.

Driskel had 3 fumbles in the 1st quarter and threw 2 interceptions in the game. Also, his completion rate and yardage were nearly the same as Murray’s. However, he did not throw a TD.

I think both QBs looked bad. It was a tough game with a lot of big defensive stops. But Murray only threw one INT really and that one made no sense — he threw it in the middle of the field with no UGA player within 15 yards. That one must have been a busted play. The other two INTs were off deflections.

If everyone is disappointed that we didn’t hang 48 points on Florida, I am with you there. We certainly should have. They looked lousy most of the game. If you want to blame Murray though, then you aren’t thinking clearly.

Really? Florida had 29 yards of total offense in the first Quarter! Florida had 21 points in the first half directly from turnovers. After that, it was just a deflated SC team Florida was playing. Anyone could have beat that team. Florida is the worst top 10 team in the country. They have squeaked by several teams. Really their D has saved them all season.

GA went into South Carolina and had the same thing happen to them. South Carolina came out strong and took the air out of their lungs. They just couldn’t recover.

You must be a Florida fan because you sound really angry this morning. :-)

@ Russ is Top Dawg – you have the right idea – Sanford needs to be rocking this Saturday.

UGA’s great victory over Florida could launch this team to another level.

Here are some of my thoughts about the win over Flroida:
1. This was a game that UGA would lose in years pass.
2. UGA MADE plays to win this game.
3. Losers out there are playing “what if” – but each game takes on it’s own personality and as Spurrier said – is unique amongst itself. No sense is saying Florida should have won or if Florida had not done this or that …. or had done this or that. The point is – they didn’t and UGA did. So UGA won the game and deservedly so.
In this game – a lot of trash talking and penalties – but this is one of the premier games and rivalries in all of college football – and a lot on the line this year – very emotional and high tension.
4. Where has UGA’s defense been all year and why did it take a player to motivate the unit?
5. Aaron Murray hung in there and made it happen when he had to – but what a horrible game and very poor decisions. He is a work in progress.

6. Auburn had 63 points hung on them and will go winless in sec play this year! (just had to write that in here)!

I love how all of you are automatically assuming you are going to be playing Bama in the SEC championship. Two things must happen for that to come true. One, UGA must win out in the conference. Somebody needs to tell Murray we are playing UK or UT again this Saturday, so he will start throwing the ball to OUR guys again.

What was up with those INTs Saturday? That last one, he took his time, and he had plenty of time, stepped up and threw it 15′ over the receiver’s head.

Unbelievable that Murray could be so amazingly accurate one week (UK) then so inaccurate a week later.

It may be a home vs road thing with him . . .

@ Sal – LSU could pull the upset – they have a tremendous Defense and they are extremely tough to play at Death Valley. However, LSU QB play has not been good this year – I do not think they have the offense to beat Bama this year.
Time will tell – but you could be right – but thinking Bama will win this game pretty convincingly.
Nothing but respect for LSU.

@ Joey – what was up with Murray’s 3 INT’s? He was trying to force downfield throws that were not there – bad decsisions against a great defense. He choked.
However, this game played out to be a defenseive battle – and Murray lead the team on a drive throwing the ball – when it counted most.
