‘Hurricane Jarvis’ sweeps through Florida’s offense for 17-9 Georgia win

JACKSONVILLE — Never mind all that “soft defense” talk. Georgia had Jarvis Jones back in the lineup.

The Bulldogs’ dynamic outside linebacker, who has missed two games with injuries and been hobbled much of the season’s first half, was feeling good and healthy on Saturday. Just ask Florida, which felt his wrath all night.

The 2011 All-American terrorized the Gators all night, finishing with 13 tackles, three quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Jones wasn’t the only reason, but he was a big reason the No. 10-ranked Bulldogs were able to knock off the No. 2 Gators 17-9 Saturday night at EverBank Field.

The victory gives puts the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 SEC) into the driver’s seat to repeat as SEC East champions and represent the division in the SEC championship game in the Georgia Dome. Georgia plays host to Ole Miss (5-3, 2-2) next Saturday and closes out the conference slate at Auburn (1-7, 0-6) on Nov. 10. Since the Bulldogs now own the head-to-head tiebreaker, the Gators need to beat Missouri next week and have Georgia lose one of its final two.

“All we’ve done is give ourselves a chance to play Ole Miss and have it mean something,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said.

It was only fitting that Jones would make the play of the game. With the Bulldogs’ clinging to an eight-point lead in the final minutes, Florida tight end Jordan Reed hauled in a pass and was running inside the Bulldogs’ 5-yard line. But Jones hadn’t given up on the play. Catching Reed from behind, Jones tomahawked the football loose and it bounded into the end zone. There, cornerback Sanders Commings jumped on the ball and cradled it in the back of the end zone for a touchback.

“I didn’t really realize exactly what Jarvis had done until they told me and I looked at the line,” Richt said. “That’s on a bum ankle and I know his groin’s not really 100 percent yet. He really led for us tonight on the field But he was more vocal than I’ve ever seen him. He really wanted this one badly. I’m just happy he’s a Georgia Bulldog.”

Jones emerged from the locker room later than his teammates, who were being interviewed in a ground-floor concourse. He again had to receive post-game medical treatment. But he spoke humbly about what had just occurred.

“I had a good game, but all of us had a big game,” said the junior from Columbus. “We were clicking on all cylinders. We held the No. 2 team in the nation without a touchdown the whole game. That’s a compliment for us as a defense. I just hope we continue to play this way the rest of the season and keep challenging each other week in and week out.”

Jones’ teammates weren’t as modest in talking about him.

“Jarvis Jones is a beast; that’s a beast right there,” senior linebacker Mike Gilliard said. “He’s a hard worker; he’s a passionate, passionate guy; he loves this sport. He came out here and showed up like we knew he would. Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games.”

“Jarvis is a great player, an outstanding player, whatever you want to say,” sophomore Malcolm Mitchell said. “To come off an ankle sprain the way he did. That’s not an easy thing to come back from. Then to do what he did, I’d pick him No. 1 in the draft if it was me.”

It was a total defensive effort by the Bulldogs beyond Jones’ play. Georgia held the Gators without a touchdown in this series for the first time since 1988 when coach Vince Dooley’s last team beat them 26-3. Florida had six turnovers – four fumbles and two interceptions – and managed just 266 total yards.

It’s no coincidence that the performance came in the same week that Williams, the senior safety and de facto defensive captain, came out and said the Bulldogs were playing too soft on defense and without the same kind of passion they did the year before. Georgia returned eight starters from last season’s unit, which finished fifth in the nation in total yardage.

“Our guys were very serious about playing with intensity and playing with some physicality,” Richt said. “They had been accused of some things that guys don’t like to be accused of and I think that probably helped motivate them.”

Richt was pretty motivated, too. The Florida series has been one that has dogged his tenure as head coach. Saturday’s win was just his fourth in 12 seasons over the Gators.

A jovial Richt remained on the field for nearly 15 minutes, working his way from the north end of the stadium to the south, giving fans the thumbs-up sign, shaking hands and chatting up hundreds who had come down to the front row.

“You need to enjoy these moments,” Richt explained. “As long as the fans were going to stuck around, I was going to stick around… . When you have a victory like that against a great team and your fanbase is there, I want to stick around and enjoy it with them. I wanted our players to enjoy it and I wanted to enjoy it. We wanted to celebrate.”

Georgia did manage to generate some offense, though it was more timely than prolific. Quarterback Aaron Murray had a season-high three interceptions – all in the first-half after having only four all season – but hooked up with Malcolm Mitchell on a 45-yard touchdown pass with 7:11 remaining in the fourth quarter that have the Bulldogs some breathing room.

And freshman Todd Gurley provided the Bulldogs just the spark they needed in the run game. He rushed for 118 yards on 27 carries and scored on a 10-yard run, his 11th TD of the season. In all, Georgia eke out just 273 yards.

Williams, for what it’s worth, finished with six tackles and a tackle for loss. Bacarri Rambo and Damian Swann each recorded interception.

Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel was sacked five times and was 14-of-26 passing. Mike Gillisee led the Gators with 77 yards rushing.

“I’ve said all season we’re not a team that has a lot of margin of error,” Muschamp said. “Six turnovers, wow, that’s hard to overcome.”

Damnit you shoulda played like this all year long. This is “Hunker Down Dawg Style D” guys.
You rattled them because you came to play and they saw this on your faces and it worried the gators…kinda like the rematch between Mr. T and Rocky Balboa rematch where Mr. T looked into Rocky’s eyes and saw determination without fear.
This is suppose to be the back bone of Georgia Football. Get ready to rumble and believe in yourself and the sky is the limit.

I don’t want to hear anything about soft schedule, since we have now beaten Florida which beat S.C. and LSU.

Calm down. Calm down. Here we go. Coming out of the woodwork. Our D definitely showed some real intensity tonight, but this was against a terrible offense. Driskell is almost as bad as Murray. Speaking of Murray, he is a flat out joke. If you think we win the SEC game without putting in Mason or even Welch, you’re living a pipe dream. I love beating Florida and sticking it to Spurrier (bye bye Lattmimore), but we did not measure up to an LSU or Alabama tonight. Go ahead and celebrate. I will too. But, count on losing in Atlanta with this type of passing game. Murray needs to be taught a lesson and removed from the field mid-game. How many passes did he let sail and how many open men did Driskell miss? Calm the F down. This was a nice win with sloppy play and turnovers from the opponent.

To all you idiots that are whooping and hollering bout how great Ricth is they have done nothing so far that they didn’t do last year!!! I am still doubtful of Ricth and Bubu I will admit I am wrong about them when they either beat Bama for the SEC championship or take them to the wire in it could have gone either way nail bitter. That being said I did see some things in Ricth that I haven’t seen before that I liked. When players did something stupid he was in their face and giving them an earful and he was very aggressive overall in the game. For all you winners who are satisfied with limping into the SEC East title with fans like you that is as far as they will ever go. I’ll talk to you again when they either are decimated by Bama R they are standing in Atlanta victorious with the SEC trophy in their hands getting ready to play for the BCS title. I’m finally convinced Murray is not a good QB. I thought he was. he is very accurate but it’s not all there. I think he’s too short.

6 turnovers and you had 132 yards in penalties. more yards then you had rushing and almost as many as passing and a plethora of short field opportunities.

the win is impressive from an outsiders point of view in that UF was looking really good coming into the game.

but given the way it went down, you have no chance against us.

Let’s not get too carried away. Our Dawgs played winning SEC football, that is the formula that is needed, tough, physical defense, and not bad on the o line either. Murray had plenty of time to throw but simply couldnt execute. We won because we controlled the line of scrimmage and for that I could not be more proud. Williams comments were needed and his teammates answered the challenge. My only disappointment was how Murray responded to adversity. He looked lost and bewildered, and needs to learn to stop the “deer in headlights” play in these games. Proud to be a Dawg, but much work still to be done.

First, I just want to say that I despise The Florida Gators.

Kudos to the offensive line, they held their own against a very good defensive front, opened running lanes and decent pass protection. We should have added more points to the win if not for Murray throwing the pick inside the ten yard line and also the missed field goal.

I’ve always been a Murray fan and still think he can pick you apart when given adequate protection but he does get rattled and makes bad passing decisions and I’ve always believed that he zones in on his primary receivers and doesn’t pick up on developing options as the play breaks down. It showed again tonight but he did have a couple of drops and one interception was off of the receiver’s hands.

The defense played a physical game, flew to the ball, tackled better and there were alot of swamp lizards littering the carpet.
Jarvis Jones is the best defensive player in the country. I would love to see him play at 100% without injury this season.

The players and coaches on this team need to hold each other accountable for their play for the rest of this season. Thaks Shawn Williams, you’re a Damn Good Dog. I wasn’t crazy about the way that you did it but admire your passion for your team and you brothers and I’m sure that right now, your teammates and coaches are thanking you too.

C’mon offense, get it together this week.

And on a serious note, if you believe in prayer, say one for Marcus Lattimore tonight. I’m a huge fan of this guy, he’s a good young man and a huge talent and it broke my heart to see his broken spirit in his eyes.

WOW Now that is manning up. Yes the Dawgs needed to be told they were not showing up, and I am glad they were embarrassed enough that they decided to show the Dawg Nation that they had what it took to win a BIG game.

I really liked the up field defensive play, the constant pressure, the blitz packages, and all the turnovers as a result of this aggressive play. Where has this been before makes me wonder if we play better when fear is at our backs. Seems maturity is not of this team. The penalties were off the chart, and personal fouls aside we were luck to win as we played poorly at best. On emotion, as well spunk is what was the difference. So these Dawgs can, and the next question is will they Finish The Drill or will they come down to earth and lay another egg.

Glad to be a Dawg, and this win will go along way until Saturday when The Rebels come into Athens. We will see how mature we really are.

HUGE win for the dawgs today. I was expecting Murray to throw a pick or a bad pass on that third down throw, but he delivered and Mitchell did the rest. Jarvis Jones is a legitimate Heisman contender. The defense played really hard and emotional. From the first snap, the team was fired up. Thanks, Shawn Williams. Florida could not have played much worse on offense, but that’s what happens when a young quarterback goes up against a great defense sometimes. Not the Gators’ best effort, but there’s no excuse for their turnovers. Hunker down!!!

I want to see the players play the game not the refs drop flags for every little thing.

And, as I said it was overkill. I have seen worse excessive celebrations that were not called. Its a game of emotion and a kid should be excited when he makes a play. I do not like the excessive celebration rules anyway — its a game of celebration and emotion.

And I shudder to think what Alabama will do to us if we make it to Atlanta.

Even if they did tie the game, Georgia had a level of confidence we haven’t seen in quite some time and still would’ve won, and it’s very refreshing. They need to keep it up knowing that if they win out they not only have a potential date with Alabama/LSU for the SEC title but a chance to play for the NC.

You’re wrong. That was a clean hit, no horsecollar, he had his arm across his chest and Patton landed on his arm. No response to the other whining in your post.

Bottom line, UF was exposed as a team with a good defense, but an average to below average offense that couldn’t hold onto the ball when hit in the mouth.

Also, the horse collar that led to Patton’s broken arm was as blatant a call as I’ve seen in years.

The replay showed clearly that it was not a horse collar tackle.I thought a penalty would be called because he grabbed Patton high like cowboys bulldog cows in a rodeo.Florida has been playing at a high level all season and was due to come out flat and today was the day.You lost, take it like a man.

A Horse collar tackle is tackling by grabbing the inside of the shoulder pads there is no rule against tackling around a ball carriers neck, perfectly legal. when the uf d lineman held TG on the attemped screen pass that was a legit call a defender can’t hold anywhere on the field behind the line of scrimmage or otherwise. the refs gave the dawgs nothing, the gators running game was stuffed all day that is why the gators were beaten

I knew the wussies would be happy with this win, but it validates none of what they were saying or prognosticating:

This does not validate Mark Richt and his coaching staff as a whole
This win does not validate Mike BoBo
This win does not validate Aaron Murray
Todd Grantham is the only individual whose coaching method was validated today.
This does nothing to change my mind that Mark Richt should lose his job, BoBo can’t call an offensive game against any opponent of substance, and Aaron Murray is an average quarterback. He wasn’t too hyper today; he just sucked and almost gave the game away. Good game for the Bulldawgs and the Dawg Nation and program as a whole. But CMR lovers, you can’t point to one thing where he, his OC, and his QB had anything to do with this ictory today but had everything to do with almost costing them the game. FACTS!!!

GreatDawg36….Agreed here too. Much depends on how this team responds after this. CMR seems to get the perfect win at the perfect time to bail him out. I’m all for him to succeed but I want so see some consitantsy before I’m convinced…..Seems as though we’re just good enough to get by, yet not bad enough to fire a coach, yet I still think this sleeping giant can be so much more. This combination is a recipe for “almost”…..With that being said, I’m proud of my Dawgs and am celebrating this victory. Been happy about all week about 36 and his comments. It seems to have worked. Now, somehow, someway we have to calm Aaron down during big games. If not for the D, AM could have lost the game with his mistakes. Finally, can we not get our guys to realize, it’s not the instigator, it’s the

I admit to thinking we were way too soft to beat Florida, but why would anyone who’s seen the first 7 games think differently? I’ve never been happier to be proven wrong. HBTD! Back-to-back against the Gators, finally. 49-40-2. Gators, we’re still your daddy.

For the first time in my life, I was actuallly bored watching a college football game. I mentioned it to my wife and she said the same thing. If there ever was a game tht neither team deserved to win, this was it. So the team with the weakest SEC schedule will probably win the East. Go figure.

I wonder do the Dawgs feel that after seeing all their descrepancies,do they really think they have a chance vs. Bama? Bama Offense can’t be stopped and Bama’s D can stop Georgia’s. Do u think there’s a possibility to beat Bama with no QB? Nitwits, they STOP THE RUN WITH 7 MEN!!!! Nobody on Georgia football team requires a double team, nor can beat Bama DB’s one on one as they destroy opposition QBs and RBs. Gurshall won’t see 20 carries combined, due to Bama’s scoring and the need to score. Their safeties basically play Centerfield and guard against deep balls and screen plays. Nobody runs on Bama,so what make’s Georgia think that they can?
Does Georgia have an elite O-Line? Does Georgia have elite WR’s? Does Georgia have elite D-Line? Does Georgia have elite DB’s (other than Rambo and how can either him or Williams come up to stop the run when McCarron (who doesn’t throw picks) throws over the top?)?
Bama’s O-Line is the best in Football, capable RB’s,a stable of playmaking WR’s,and a QB that doesn’t make mistakes. They’re led and will be prepared by the Greatest Coaches in Football and have the squad has Championship pedigree. Dawgs are overmatched in everyway possible,ur classic David vs. Goliath match-up….hopefully Richt got a huge slingshot, cuz by the look of things…He surely do not.

If you were bored watching the UGA-UF game you must have been comatose watching GT get wiped out then. Maybe UGA can peak your excitement a little when your sorry team comes to Athens in a few weeks and plays a team from a real conference. It is pretty bad when a fan of another team comments about a game, that GT can’t even imagine being competitive in and knowing that your team still has to play this boring old UGA team in a few weeks.

I really don’t get those saying we were “lucky” to win this game. I thought the Dawgs won the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball and special teams was a tie. We did lose in the arena of penalties, but don’t tell me the refs “gave” us the game with that iffy holding call on the game winning drive: #1 it WAS holding, he got there before the ball did, #2 there were several eggregious holding calls against the Gators that the refs no-called in the 4th quarter, go back and watch. As I saw it, it was a close game and the better team prevailed. Georgia seemed well prepared and well motivated, Kudos to the coaches and team leaders on this one. I thought Bobo called a good but not great game: good mix of run and pass, some different looks at the line to throw off the blitz.

Murray was simply horrible, especially since his line manned up and gave him time to throw. Go back and watch the game, his problem was his mechanics. He never seemed to get his shoulders right and his feet set, it was like he was expecting Clowney to clobber him at any time again: as a result he ended up throwing alot of passes from this weird pseudo side arm angle, aka Tony Romo, with the same terrible results. His form has to be perfect to achieve good results due to his tiny hands. He also struggled throwing the ball over the middle, probably because he couldn’t see over the line of scrimmage. Credit the coaching staff for realizing what was going on and dialing up out routes and timing routes so Murray could have a chance. Looking down the road, if UGA does end up playing Bama in the ATL, Bobo MUST design roll out plays for Murray, or it will be USC all over again.
Go Dawgs!

Copied this from GSUN but fitting for us.

We were ranked #23 to start the season and Georgia was ranked in the Top Ten for a reason. They are supposed to be better than us. They have a QB who’s been there for three years and a coach who’s in his 12th season. They’d been under achieving all year while we were overachieving all year. Today, they showed up and we got hit in the mouth. We played like the team with young players who’ve not been in big games before. It sucks that they’ve beaten us two years in row now. That hadn’t happened in a long time. And that sure was nice while it lasted.

But, when you consider where we were a year ago, you still have to be pretty happy with the season so far. And you have to be looking forward to next season even more. When we can get Driskel a bit better at throwing the ball down the field, we should be really good. Think about it. Jarvis Jones and Jadaveon Clowney have been wrecking us the last two weeks. Our version of those two was lost in the spring game. Add Powell to the mix and get JD to throw the ball out of the back of the end zone when we have three points in the bag, and we’ll be pretty tough.

There’s not a team in the SEC East that deserves to be in any title hunt if the game yesterday between Fl. / Ga. was suppose to display the best the East has. Alabama would dismantle and embarrass any team in our East side. RIP East and go back to the basics and start over because the offenses look pathetic

Gator 1

IF you get by Ole Miss and IF you get by Auburn you get this
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Nick Saban roamed the sideline like a lion stalking a wildebeest. He looked furious. His defense had just given up a touchdown. Now his offense couldn’t run the play quite perfectly. So he fumed. Alabama led Mississippi State, which had entered Saturday unbeaten and ranked No. 11 in the BCS standings, by a score of 38-7. The Crimson Tide offense, composed entirely of backups, was taking a knee to run out the clock.

Before anyone could even ask him afterward, Saban brought up his late-game displeasure. “I know everybody’s probably going to say, ‘Well, you got upset with the backup players.’ I got upset with the backup players because they’re better than that,” Saban said. “They know they’re better than that. They need to play with poise and confidence when they go in the game and compete just like everybody else competes. That’s about being able to execute and do your job. It’s not about shutting anybody out. It’s not about any of that. We’re trying to get our players to play their best in every regard.”

Florida gave that game away.

and uga is still a penalty and personal foul disaster. i won’t be surprised if ole miss nails uga in athens this week. the uga team that has struggled and laid eggs is still there. rescued this week by florida and the weather.

but uga had 132 yards in penalties.
uga was 1-10 on 3rd down.
murray threw 3 interceptions.
uga averaged 4 plays per drive.
uga first half, a gift TD then the next 4 drives ended in turnovers and then a punt.
second half point, FG, missed FG, punt, punt, TD drive.

And please don’t even try to say that the turnover killed you. Most of your turnovers were forced by our defense. Most of our turnovers were passes that got deflected or were thrown where there was not receiver — hang that on bad decision making by our QB. UGA tried to give this one to you, but you still couldn’t do it.

“Hmm…gator fans…what was that you were saying about your “nasty defense”
That was a nasty Gator defense on the field last night. Georgia has one 3rd down conversion out of 10 opportunities. Three interceptions and multiple stops after multiple turnovers by the Florida offense. Georgia offense was unable to do much for most of the night. So…don’t Dawg on the Gator D. Remains one of the best in the country….and they showed it against you offense last night.\

But I do have one complaint about last nights game…….and it is a big one.

RULE: A defensive player can grab or tackle a RB while that RB is behind the line of scrimmage. On the pass to Gurley that was call pass interference against Easley…..Gurley was clearly behind the line of scrimmage when Easley hit him….and as the ball was passing his arms. That call…which does not follow the rule…..was horrible….and without it….Georgia punts and does not score that final TD. There were several phanton calls on the Florida D last night that made no sense according to the rules.

But that said……Florida did not deserve to win the game. Georgia took advantage of the few opportunities given to them……Including your wide receiver NOT fumbling the ball as he went into the end zone…..vs. the Florida receiver forgetting that you have to protect the ball….especially when you are near the end zone.

But it is the Florida offense that cost the Gators the game last night with a stupid pass at the end of the first half and that fumble at the end of the game.

In all honesty…….neither offense played well last night. But Georgia did what it had to do to win the game……and Florida did not.

So….enjoy another year of gloating and bragging…..and ranting.

But……Georgia better be ready to play Ole Miss. Their offense is not Gator offense….but neither is their D. You guys will maul Auburn.

Gongrats…….but that was a painful game to watch last night.

If Reed had not been holding the ball out like a loaf of bread….it would not have been stripped. That is what I said. That does not take anything away from the great play Jones made. He made a great play on the ball that Reed held out for him. Reed made a terrrible play. That is what I said.

I read above that “Georgia forced” all of Florida’s turnovers…..and all of Murray’s turnovers had nothing to do with the Florida D. YOU SEE AND THINK WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE AND THINK.

Georgia deserved to win the game last night and Florida deserved to lose…..because Georgia made plays when they needed to make them….and Florida did not. I do not think Georgia is better than Florida. I do not think Florida is better than Georgia. Georgia was just better last night. Period. And they earned it. This is a Gator fan. Bill King is apparently blocking recognized Gator fan IP addresses on his blog. That’s manly. So, on to business:

Congratulations, Dawgs. As usual when you guys manage a win in this series, your defense overachieved as a result of emotional gimmickry. And Grantham did call an unusually good game for him.

Still, your offense performed about as expected. With the Gator’s six turnovers–three of which were unforced–and your defense’s performance, you still could have just as lost the game as won. Alabama will obliterate you if you manage to overcome the unavoidable letdown against Ole Miss. Beating them under the circumstances is by no means a given.

You should send a thank you card to the league office for your schedule this year; and for the Gator’s schedule.

Sour grapes, you say? Absolutely.

Well, I guess at least some good will come out of this: You’ll be stuck with Mark Richt long enough that Kirby Smart will probably get a head coaching job somewhere else.

That was an absolute war yesterday, how many players got hurt in this game (like ten), and as many penalties for balls to the wall play from both teams. Best defensive performance by both teams I’ve seen in a while. Murray kept playing and Jarvis was an absolute beast! Should be in the Heisman talk after yesterday, but somehow the pundits won’t mention him. Sweet victory, and if the Dawgs can play like this the rest of the way, who knows? I don’t know which was harder to watch, the whole game yesterday or the five second clip of Marcus Lattimore, godspeed to you Marcus!

Jarvis Jones is the best defensive player in the SEC…..but he has missed too much time this year to be considered for the Heisman…..but if…..and that is a big if…….Georgia beats Bama and goes to the NC game….he will get back into that picture. He was just too quick and too smart for the Gator OL last night. Glad he is headed to the NFL and the Gators do not have to play him anymore.

All you GA fans claiming you crushed the Gators need to put down your crack pipes and sober up.

FL had more passing yards, more 1st downs, won the time of possession battle, and was still in the game with 2 minutes to go in spite of 6 turnovers. GA converted exactly 1 3rd down the entire game.

True, the GA defense played great and Jarvis Jones is an absolute stud. GA won fair and square, but to act as though you dominated the game is just ridiculous. This game was a great hard fought battle that could’ve gone either way.

Can’t wait for next year.

Yes, Tampa Gator, UF gave the game away with the turnovers, but how many times since 1990 have the Dawgs given the game to the Gators?

Many, many times. Almost did again with the INT after a nice drive to the 11 yd line.

Congrats to the Dawgs, particularly the D, who played with a toughness I haven’t seen in years. Congrats to Coach Grantham and Asst Coach Shawn Williams (haha) who made one of the “plays of the game” somehow stopping the runner on 4th down, just inches short of the line.

Special congrats to Coach Richt for finally beating a highly ranked team – makes me wonder what the hell happened in Columbia? Anyway he is here to stay – I’ll ease up on my criticisms, and shut up about Kirby Smart – til Richt retires anyway.

@The Gator….

That was full of sour grapes….for sure. I don’t Georgia’s defense overachieved last night. They played up to their potential….which they had not done all year. What I do not understand is why Florida continued to run the ball up the middle all last night when Georgia had 8 and 9 up on the line….especially on first and 2nd downs. That just set Driskel and the OL up for failure on 3rd down…..and Jones up for success. It is one thing to line up and run the ball…..but you need a passing game to do it……and Florida refused to pass the ball on first down for most of the night last night…..and failure to do so never losened up the Georgia D….out of the 8 and 9 man fronts. Even Kentucky came out and passed the ball on first down last week. I guess the Florida offensive coaches did not watch that film.

It is obvious to me that Driskel had not adapted (he played shotgun all through HS) well to playing under center. His 3, 5, and 7 step drops are not smooth…..and as a result…..he takes way too long to set up and look downfield for receivers. Sacks are the result….especially when people like Jarvis Jones is blitzing. Driskel has a lot of work to do. I still think Brissett may be bettter suited for this offense…..but obviously the Gator coaches do not. But Driskel needs to get better and faster at setting up in the pocket when he drops from the center. He is much more comforable when he throws out of the shotgun…..as in that last drive when he was throwing on first down from the pocket and was picking Georgia apart. When Florida did not do that more in the game is completely beyond me.

And let’s be real here, UF’s offense is nothing to write home about. Now I too am beggining to wonder if bobo is really the problem with the offense. Players shouldn’t have to coach honestly.Jarvis was the real catalyst and leader of the defense yesterday since he was playing with a bum ankle and bad groin, and the rest of the D showed they had balls as a result! lol Tampa Gator ,I agree and it is a big if, Bama rocked a good Miss St. team and as usual are a team with no weaknesses. After that game, the way they played on D, the question as a Dawg fan who has watched this D lay an egg the past month leading up to yesterday, this Ole Miss team presents areal challenge honestly. I mean you have two teams, one will be hungry and playing well, (Ole Miss) one pretty desperate(Auburn), so you Gators still have some hope there.

I would agree that as a whole it was a close game, but I would also say that the GA “D” did, in fact, dominate. The only reason it was close is our offense played terrible and Murray again showed that he can’t manage big games. Of course, this was the defense I was anticipating all year and it took someone slapping them in the face to get them fired up. Somebody else needs to call them out each week, because the coaching staff sure doesn’t seem to be able to fire them up.

First downs – FLorida 15, Georgia 14
3rd down conversions – Florida 7 out of 16 Georgia 1 out of 10
Total yards – Florida 266 Georgia 273
Passing – Driskel 16-29-2 for 185 yards Murray 12-25-3 for 150 yards
Rushing – Florida 67 Georgia 124
Penalties – Florida 10-95 Georgia 14-132
Turnovers – Florida 6 Georgia 3
Time of possession – Florida 33.41 Georgia 26.19 (even with those 6 turnovers)

What stands out:

All the penalties called by those refs….some of them phantom on both sides.
All the turnovers by the Gators….some forced (3) and some not (3).

Florida last the turnover battle…..and therefore….the game.

What’s funny (not really) is if UGA wins its last 2 SEC games, and UF wins out, y’all will probably get the Sugar Bowl. I cannot see LSU or us even slowing down Bama, so the Sugar would take a 11-1 UF over a 11-2 UGA.

@mt and @TampaGator, I too was curious about the fatal attempted screen pass holding call. There are actually two relevant NCAA rules that govern this particular play. First,

SECTION 3. Forward Pass
Contact Interference
ARTICLE 9.
a. Either Team A or Team B legally may interfere with opponents behind the neutral zone.
d. Pass interference rules apply only during a down in which a legal forward pass crosses the neutral zone.

Based upon this rule, there was no foul. Unfortunately though,

SECTION 3. Blocking, Use of Hands or Arms
Use of Hands or Arms by Defense
ARTICLE 4.
b. Defensive players may not use hands and arms to tackle, hold or otherwise illegally obstruct an opponent other than a runner.

So, even though read option running backs get tackled all the time and no foul is called (probably because the offense is attempting to fool the defense into thinking the running back has the ball), the official’s call was correct… You can’t tackle a running back who clearly does not have the ball.

Tampa gator,

I agree with your interpretation of the pass interference call. The call should have been defensive holding. I reference the rule “Use of Hands or Arms by Defense Artical 4b” which reads “Defensive players may not use hands and arms to tackle, hold or otherwise illegally obstruct an opponent other than a runner.” At the time of the obvious hold Gurley did not have the ball and thus was not a runner and was obstructed. It is also obvious that Gurley was not engaged in blocking the defender which would have made the use of hands and arms to lift or move him legal. The referee did not in my opinion make the correct call but the infraction was made and the penalty yardage would have been the same. This information can be found on page 92 of the NCAA Football 2011 and 2012 Rules and Interpretations. They loss not because of this in any case so please don’t make excuses.

Eg, you can’t seriously think Gurley’s one second “outburst” in the end zone was excessive celebration? And on and on…10 penalties against the Gaytors and 14 penalties against the Dawgs.

BigDaddyGator…if holding the #2 team in the country out of the end zone aint “dominating”, I don’t know what is.

I thought before the game that Murray would have to be near-great for us to have a chance. So much for that little gem of wisdom on my part.

Great win! Now GATA against the Rebs!

Go Dawgs!

But to say most Dawg fans wanted to fire Richt last week, that is just wrong

careful now, It was Shawn Williams whose comments lit a fire under the D.
Richt record against top level teams is still woeful.Richt and Bobo’s offense way under performed yesterday.

Tampa Gator,
That might be our last W’s in the series for a while. You guys are well on your way. This seemed like one of those “unseen hand” games where all kinds of strange things happen to prevent a team from winning, and it took all of that for the Dawgs to win IMHO.

Such as… D blows a coverage but the center somehow thought the QB was under center, so he snaps it badly and the QB throws a bad ball to a wide open receiver in the end zone… Wildcat QB and RB botch a handoff… TE happens to jump and hold the ball out just as a guy is catching up behind him…

W49-40-2; “…Richt and Bobo’s offense way under performed yesterday…”

I have to disagree. Murray “way under performed” if you ask me. CMB called some good plays; Murray just couldn’t execute them. He says during the week he needs to “have fun…be loose…”, then he seems tight as a tom-tom…in big games. Not to over-emphasize what I’m saying because Murray’s still our best option at QB. He’s progressed in many ways since last year; just not in some important ways, like apparent nervousness in big games. The three INTs are one thing; but the inability at this stage of his career to not keep up with the game clock is dumbfounding.

The rule that Tampa Gator idiot posted was from Wikipedia, word for word which does not show the entire rule on pass interference and holding. Someone posted earlier the rule from the NCAA rule book and THE CORRECT call was made. It wasn’t so much pass interference but there was holding so it was a penalty regardless.

What do you expect from someone wearing blue and orange glasses. I would not put alot of stock in what TG posts. He sounds like an idiot. If you read back he hopes Muschamp contacts the SEC office about the call. Tampa Gator = CLUELESS

Lay off Aaron Murray. He had a bad game but he came through when we needed it the most. If it hadn’t been for him we would have lost to Kentucky. If you have never played QB at this level in this kind of game, then you can’t criticize his play. I have a lot of respect for the young man.

Dear Sore Loser–OH, I mean Tampa Gator–Georgia had the better team and won statistically except for one facet of the game in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2010, but we still lost. You can talk about how Florida gave Georgia the game all you want, but it doesn’t take away the L or restore your dream season. I know it’s a bitter pill, but I hope all you Gators choke on it.

And to those who are mad at all the “naysayers,” where would you be if we had lost? I think coach Richt is an excellent man and a decent coach. I still don’t think this team has come close to realizing its potential. The defense and OL we saw yesterday has been nowhere to be found against decent opponents. Based upon the track record since Van Gorder left, I am not confident that we can reach our potential even fairly consistently going forward. That opinion has been formed over several years, not a single big game.

Georgia got lucky, Florida had a bad day.
Georgia is not a good football team. HC too wimpy to call out his team……Williams had to do it.

Ole Miss or Auburn WILL beat Georgia. Bank on it fool.

Richt sucks.

I dont know that you can call it an ugly win.
A hard fought Defensive battle with a 7th Ranked Defense Florida and a much improved Georgia Defense that showed up.
No one can say that Florida outplayed Georgia in this game. Floridas Defense confused Murray and he just never seems to rise up in big games.
This was going to come down to turnovers and penalties just like in every Georgia/Florida rivalry since 1980.
Let the gator fans complain because we know how it feels because its Georgia that usually gets the short end of the stick.
It is what it is and there are 2 things to think about here.
#1 by next saturday we’ll be ranked #6 and get Ole Miss and thats an important game for us to win.
Alabama and LSU play that day as well and one of them have to lose ….catching on now?
Should move us up in the polls.
3 Games left and 2 are for the SEC which we need desperately.
The other game you cant overlook is Ga Tech.
So now that our Defense has found themselves i will expect nothing less than a victory with a dominate Defense.
Jarvis you are the leader and its up 2 you and those seniors to pump up the players and get onto them if they play soft.
