Linebacker Mike Gillard, here tackling a Florida Atlantic player, was not at all happy about Shawn Williams' characterization of his play at inside linebacker. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
ATHENS — OK, here are a few addendum’s from Tuesday’s post-practice interview opportunities. Todd Grantham, Mike Gilliard and Jarvis Jones talked about Shawn Williams’ comments on the defense and a few other things. So here they are kind of raw and unabridged:
SENIOR LINEBACKER MIKE GILLIARD:
On Williams’ remarks about Amarlo Herrera being the better linebacker . . .
“As a man, I wasn’t hurt at all. I felt disrespected. And, yes, I definitely took it personally. Today in the linebackers meeting, I stood up and told them, ‘no disrespect to Amarlo and Ogletree, but when I read that I felt disrespected and I’ll definitely taking it personally. But there’s no issue between me and Shawn Williams. All it is is fuel for the fire and basically its given me motivation to go out there and give 100 percent. And that’s what I did today. You can ask any of my teammates. I was upset today at practice today any time the ball came my way I tried to knock the [expletive] out of him.”
On the response of the defense to Williams’ remarks. . .
“He called us out. Us as linebackers and asa defense as a whole, we’ve just got to deliver. This week, that’s what I plan to do. You best believe whoever’s carrying the ball, I’m gonna know the (expletive) out of them.”
On talking to Williams on Tuesday . . .
“He told me it was nothing person. Then again, by saying their names, he said my name without saying my name. I took that personal. I feel like when another man calls me soft, he’s disrespecting my manhood. So all I can do is go out there and deliver. It just gave me motivation. You best believe, on Saturday I’m going to be ready. And as a defense as a whole, we had a great practice. We flew around the ball, tried to hit hard. That’s what we’re going to continue to do for the rest of the week.”
On how he might have handled . . .
“Me, personally, I never would have told the media something like that. I’d keep it in-house and talk to the defense. I would have sat down and talked to the defense and tried to resolve the issue then and there. But there’s not going to be any issues after this right here. It’s just if another man calls me soft, I’m gonna show him there ain’t nothing sweet around here.”
JUNIOR OUTSIDE LINEBACKER JARVIS JONES
On Williams’ remarks . . .
“Everybody knows Shawn is a very passionate guy. He loves this game of football. Looking back at last year and this year, we’re playing down a level and not executing like we’re supposed to. I feel like that woke a lot of guys up. Guys understand where he’s coming from and definitely respect him. It wasn’t like he was throwing anybody under the bus, coaches or anything like that. Personally, me and a lot of other guys feel like it was just a challenge for us to go out there and just re-focus ourselves and get back on the right track and play the defense we’re known for playing and that’s smash-mouth football . Last year that’s the kind of football we played and that’s what Shawn is looking for, the team that played hard, that ran to the ball, that hit people, that got sacks and turnovers. Obviously we haven’t been that team and that’s what he wants to get back to.”
Has the controversy had an effect . . .
“Oh, yeah. Guys were turned up on both sides of the ball. They really pushed themselves to get better. I definitely think we got better in a lot of area today. Guys were giving everything they had as far as the mental stage and physical.
How might he have handled it . . .
“I’m more of a quiet guy; I’m not that vocal. I probably would have just called my defense in together and talked about it. But sometimes you have to look into different ways to get your team’s attention. Shawn was coming from the heart with it. He definitely got our attention. So we’ve just got to look past the negativity of it and what other people think. We understand where Shawn’s coming from. We’re a brotherhood here. We’ve just got to keep grinding and keep getting better this week.
“I know what kind of guy Shawn is and I know how he meant it. He’s just challenging us to get better and just push ourselves physically and mentally.”
On practicing Tuesday after sitting out since Oct. 6 with an ankle injury . . .
“It was good to get out there and move around a little bit,” said Jones, who hasn’t played since injuring his right ankle against South Carolina on Oct. 6. “Everybody’s working hard and focusing, and it was good to get back out there with the guys. I feel good right now. It’s just Tuesday, and I’m still getting better.”
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR TODD GRANTHAM
On Williams’ comments . . .
“It’s no big deal. Shawn’s a passionate guy. He cares about the way he plays and the way the other guys plays. I think it was probably taken a little bit out of context from the way he meant it in some ways. But really you’ve got a guy who wants to win and cares about his players and he’s ready to move on.”
On whether he had any advance notice from Williams . . .
“Shawn and I are pretty close and we talk. He’s a guy who wants us to play well and physical and do those kinds of things. So, you know, I don’t know.”
On Williams making lineup suggestions . . .
“Players have opinions. Everybody’s got their opinion. I have my opinion about (reporters), too.”
On how he addressed the situation with defense . . .
“We always have meetings before practice as a team. I let him have the floor for a couple of minutes and basically explain what he meant and what he cares about. The most important thing is getting ready to play Florida and it’s really not an issue. So we moved on with practice. “

Again, UGA is lucky that they can back into the SEC title game after losing to one of the two tough SEC teams that they have to play. (No LSU/Bama or even Mississippi State)
They will probably beat UF and make it to Atlanta, only to get rushed by Bama….

compared to …
#45’s response: I took an introspective look into myself and decided it wasn’t my fault. And then I justified my play by thinking of a bible verse that will make me feel better about letting my teammates down with my play. I am not mad. We’re a team. And in my vast experience of 4 years on this team having reached the ripe old age of 22, I’ve learned I can make an excuse for any of my shortcomings and it’s okay. The coach really likes me. I’ll get to play regardless of how I perform out there. I am a CMR “favorite”.

A shake up, to wake up! Glad somebody spoke HARDTRUTH. What he should’ve said was how is it that we get these top ten classes(avg 8th nationally over the last five years) and can’t get them prepared. As I watched the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday night, and looked at Atkins, Green, Roland, Boling, Geathers, and Charles, all on one team, it made me shake my head to realize all that talent(plus Pittsburgh Punter) coming through this program and we still can’t win Big. Then Monday comes and I see STAFFORD and TIM JENNINGS. All these guys in the Mark Richt era.. Coach Richt, You may be a good man, but you ain’t producing Nat’l Champs. Please Leave now!!!!!!!!!

Bottom line….. if they turn this into a positive and play like they’re capable, they can beat anyone. Florida plays solid D and makes good halftime adjustments. They are not unbeatable. USC fell into the same trap as UGA did when they visited them in Columbia. They got down early on the road to a top ten school and it snowballed on them. UGA has underperformed this year, but they are not 28 points worse than USC, just like USC isn’t 33 points worse than Florida. The fact is, talent wise, all three of these teams are very even. It looks like UGA doesn’t stand a chance this weekend, but something like this could spark that something that they needed to turn things around. Fact is this, win out and you’re going to Atlanta with an 11-1 record, top 5 ranking, and an outside shot at a national championship. Just win, and no one will care or remember what happened in the first half of the season. This is the redemption game for UGA. All the talk of 0-10 or whatever it is against the top ten the last few years will all be squashed. All the talk of Murray never winning a meaningful game will be squashed and all the talk of UGA being overrated will be squashed. Just win baby! Go Dawgs! It’s redemption time!

Something I’ve noticed…Richt, Grantham, and Jones all said the same exact thing about this…it was almost verbatim. It makes me think Richt planned this from the beginning. Of course, that would make him smarter than I think he is. Someone needed to call SOMEBODY out. We have to grow a pair as a team, coaching staff, and defense. We are neutered dawgs.

No, not most of them, anyway. Especially not for a spontaneous comment by Williams…IF it was spontaneous. Gilliard’s comments were certainly not scripted. Maybe it’s an “end zone celebration” type of thing Richt cooked up. However, like I said, I don’t think Richt is smart enough to do something like this. Though, I can’t believe he was smart enough to think up the “end zone celebration” against Florida in 2007, either. That was brilliant, which is so out of character for Richt. He’s hardly ever brilliant.

Really? It seems like every interview, presser, what have you, we are given extremely vanilla, guarded, predictable, scripted responses. How many times have we heard “If we just do what we’re supposed to do, we’ll be fine.” From CMR, to CTG, to Murray, to #45, it’s the same old story week after week. I am not necessarily faulting them for this, however, rarely if ever do I think we get the real truth straight from the horse’s mouth.
Gilliard certainly wasn’t coached to say what he said, but when was the last time you heard or saw a quote from Gilliard? He doesn’t get the microphone for a reason, namely, because the staff isn’t sure he knows how to toe the “company” line.

If you’re ugly and someone calls you ugly, you have to live with it ! You can try to get some facial surgery, clean yourself up, but you’re probably still gonna be ugly. If you’re playing soft, you have a chance to do something about that ! If you get all fired up in practice and then go soft in the game, you’re exactly what you were called “Soft”. Does it make us mad when someone calls us out ? Yes, and if it don’t then you stay a softy ! When someone holds it out there for all the world to see, then don’t blame them for calling it like they see it….Florida definately thinks you’re softies and have already said as much…..so it’s your choice, go to Jacksonville and play hard or come back feeling like a softie……I think you have the team to do it with, but it won’t be easy……Me, I’ll be watching the game, hoping the Dawgs kick some butt, and hoping they brought their A game with them…Go Dawgs

That’s just it, it seems as if the coaches and Jones (a team leader) were a bit too simpatico on this. It’s one thing to be vanilla and sound the same about topics that you have known were coming for a while, but this is a bit too quick. Why would any collaboration go on after the fact? Especially without Gilliard being in on it? I think the collaboration may have come BEFORE the fact. If that’s true, I’ve actually gained a tiny morsal of respect for Richt. It’s just a little strange.

I think you’re making it more complex than it is (or was). “That’s just Shawn being Shawn.” is totally vanilla to me and could easily have been conveyed as the team’s on the record response Tuesday, before the reporters showed up. Actually, I am fairly sure that is the truth, that Shawn Williams probably does fly off at the mouth on occasion, and to his teammates and coaches, his statements weren’t that out of the ordinary. This was just a rare opportunity that the senior, projected high draft pick, was “allowed” to speak to reporters with recorders rolling. Rambo still isn’t afforded such opportunities.

Maybe all the pre-season hype has the Georgia players thinking the oposition will just lay down for them???? Here’s news for the players, beating a team such as UGA is a feather in any teams’ cap, no one is going to lay down. It is amazing that you need something like this to motivate the team. As my father always says, talk is cheap. Let’s see if the coaches and players can lay it all out on the field for a full 60 minutes Saturday and compete and win a game against a good team. This is not the Florida teams of old where you felt there was a “schematic” and talent difference on both sides of the ball. UGA has just as much talent as Fla so it really comes down to a choice of whether they want to pay the price with a good week of practice and then translate this to the game on Saturday.

If the media did not have something like this to talk about, they could not do their job. They need to edit these articles written by the experts instead of just using spell check. If a word is spelled correct but not what is should be spell check will not correct it….i.e. “know instead of the intended word knock”. and the miss use of “then or than”. Also I am sure CBS will not have enough to talk about on Saturday so they will bring this up ad nauseum all day.

The table is set once again for Dawgs. The bell has not been answered since 09. We have a large game, against the #2 team in the nation, being hyped on CBS everyday, THE featured game in the SEC this week, we will be wearing our red jerseys…..and the stage is set. A little drama with Shawn Williams calling his teammates out……Sports radio all week a buzz with the drama……….And we all just wait to see the outcome….Richt has a new contract after a luke warm 10-4 season last year, with a senior laden team loaded…..It’s time to see. This game is HUGE for Richt. Reading these blogs all week, about 70% have little faith. It’s a good opportunity for Dawgs to show up or shut up.

dockta is exactly right!
Ever since our All-Americans have come back we have been playing like induviduals and not a team! They play like they are entitled to be on the field. The first 4 games our defense played with passion and forcing the game! The current All-American “D” plays soft! Put our younger, harder hitting more deserving players on the field!
Put up or shut up and sit down! My two cents worth, Geaux Dawgs, see you in Atlanta in December!

This is a prime example of why UGA cannot break through the glass ceiling. I have been a Mark Richt supporter up until this season, knowing that this season would lend itself to having the same or more talent from top to bottom than any of the SEC teams that have won a NC in the past 10 yrs and the soft scehdule to compliment the team. I have head from Tide Roll adn others that our lines dont have sufficient talent and we get pushed around in the trenches, and that is totally true, but folks we have a cultural problem at UGA. We need slogans, fancy uniforms , and now teammates calling the players out for being soft to get this team ready to play in arguably the biggest game of there career. WTF!! you see, these players have been told how special they are and they beleive it, so when someone calls them out for playing soft they go in to defensive mode and pitch a fit like a baby in the corner. IMO they dont have to play perfect ball this Saturday, or the best game or all the other BS we keep hearing from Murray and company, this attitude sets you up for failure because the first thing that goes wrong you think you have blown it. I think this team needs some BALLS!!! They need to man up and play with some heart, some fire, and play like its the last game they are ever gonna play. But I dont think they will becuase it all starts at the top, and IMO Mark Richt looks like he doesnt want to be there, he has lost whatever edge he had in his earlier career. Its time to thank him for his service to UGA, point out to him that we made him very rich and show him the door.

I knew Richt was soft, but Grantham isn’t mountain of strength either. At Florida, all this name calling and dissension would be huge deal. Muschamp keeps everything in the locker room and Williams wouldn’t be playing Sat., good ole Richt probably just sang him a song. I don’t care how fired up the dawgs defense is, it will be the total lack of discipline that will do them in.

It will be interesting to see if the intensity is ratcheted up this week. Maybe this is what was needed. Maybe the players tune out the coaches when they say things like this and another player can grab their ear. When someone is nagging you about things after a while you just tune out. Who knows… but they have to win Saturday. I hope they realize that their coaches will be gone if they wimp out again. Maybe we need to have a former Dawg come in and be honest. This program and Adams/McGarity are in a pickle. They hear regularly from donors I’m sure about the lack of signature wins the last 31/2 years against teams that they care about and not just losing those games, but mostly being embarrassingly beat on national TV….. The roster management is the WORST is the SEC. We might as well be on probation scholarship wise…. The arrest lead the conference and on and on……but due to mostly scheduling and talent in the program, Mark will end up this year 10-2, thus 20-4 regular season over the last two years mostly on weak foes, so how do you fire him at 20-4? To outsiders, it will look knee jerk and that the “special interest money” is running the program. It’s a real problem.

My theory on CMR is this: Obviously he is a good recruiter. (Probably a greate recuiter.) As many posters have noted he gets top talent, just look at all the guys from UGA that make it productively in the NFL. IMO I also think he personally is a good X’s and O’s offesive coach. I think CMR’s weakness is he does not surround himself with the best talent in the coaching staff. Now a lot of that is also on CMR because he should develop those guys. I think that’s the problem. Maybe he gives his coordinators too much leash.

Because the second there is adversity, they’re going to be pointing fingers instead of playing like a team. This is a top down issue. who calls out their teammates to the media? That’s selfish. Well, it is realy simple if Georgia does not run the ball as they did in 07 and last year vs UF, they lose. If Murray has to throw the ball 35 times the team will be behind and the defense on the field too long, therefore a loss. Simple as that. One other thing, ball control and time of possession is a condition of running the ball.

And that’s fine. You might be right, you might not be. That will all work out one way or another. Is it absolutely required to continue to clog up any discussion of actual football talk with the constant, over and over and over, reference to that? A deal that you have no control over? Is there any room for simply letting some Georgia fans who actually want to discuss football, do so? . You want the coach fired. Reading some othere reports, Williams spoke for a couple of minutes in front of the entire defense, so I am sure he was able to explain a lot more than the sound bites that only mentioned the LBs. I am also positive that nobody left the room with unresolved personal issues towards each other.
To me, the thing that (the focus on LBs) missed is that the DBs have not exactly been stellar either. I realize that the LBs are the “bridge” between run/pass defense, and if they are not playing fast and angry, nothing s well. But when they have commited, sold out to stop the run, they have. But I haven’t seen anything that gives me confidence that they can shut down the corners and allow the Grantham to load up the box. Not like the DLs have been blowing up the plays eithers.

All this focus on defense, this game IMO comes down to whether or not we can establish the run. Can we man up and push the Gators on the line of scrimmage and let the backs have some daylight? I think this offense is capable of power football, our staff just won’t game plan it. That is what will wear Florida down. Establishing the run to Bobo and Richt is not establishing the run in the SEC.

If talking about knocking the (expletive) out of someone was relevant to actually knocking the (expletive) out of someone we would definitely be a whole lot better. Of course, talk is cheap and we are what we are – not very good, especially on defense against any team and on offense against good D’s. Of course, we can be great, at times, on offense if we are playing a pitiful D even though we could not even begin to run the ball against a pitiful KY D.

No more excuses fron the team! the defense has to play stronger and we going to need a miracle from our o-line…..I’m just being realistic about richt being fired…I’ts not going to happen anytime soon…for one we are 6-1…and we still have a shot winning 10-12 games……even though the defense gave up a bunch of yards to cream puffs….we still won those games and thats all mcgarity really cares about is winning the games and not how you win….so when we lose to fla i will be calling for richt to fired…but my opinion wont mean much….maybe things are not as bad as they seem and maybe things can be turned around….time will tell and its coming soon enough

It should not have taken public comments by Williams to make you want to do those things you said above.
You should have been doing those things from the time you enrolled at Muttvile.
No one should have to call you out to make you give 100%, that should come from within and it should be something you OWE your teammates, your coaching staff, your school, your PARENTS, YOURSELF, and everyone of your friends that ARE NOT good enough to play at the BCS level.
Those are the reasons you give 100%, not because Williams called you out.

Win or lose, this Gator team will not turn tail and limp back to Gainesville. (like last year’s beaten down team) This year’s team is a 100% tougher on defense and the OL, plus we’ll actually play with a seasoned, non-wounded qb and without that blowhard in Kansas as OC (he was worse than Bobo). After the beat down the Gators put on the Gamecocks, I think we’re going into this game with a ton of confidence and Georgia is letting the infighting and finger pointing get to them. Seriously, we cannot out-muscle UF’s D-line, so Richt/Bobo better figure out ways to give Murray time, roll him out, put Samuel in to pass-block (Lord knows the freshmen can’t), extra O-lineman, etc.
I don’t care what the D is ranked, if you give Murray time, he will eat you up – then as the D makes adjustments, DO THE SAME.

OK OK, jeez… no it shouldn’t take a player saying this to get other players attention but sometimes it does. Did you always listen to your parents? Or your teachers? Didn’t you think “blaah, blah, blah…” when they said something for the 100th time? Did you always do what you were told to do… even under threat of punishment? NO you did not. Sometimes it takes a peer to get through to you when others can not. The human being always justifies it’s behavior. We have this habit of delusing ourselves into believing what we want to believe… including our definition of giving 100% effort. We think we are and we want to believe we are but in reality we are not. These are kids… playing a GAME. Motivation is a strange thing. Sometimes you have to be insulted before you take notice. Having a coach tell you you are a panty waist is not likely to produce the same results as a girl telling you that you aren’t man enough for her. Think about it folks. It sux that it has to sometimes happen this way.
Somebody mentioned Pat Dye and the famed “not man enough” comment. If a coach had said that the guys would have blown it off and everybody knows it. Having someone publicly insult you sometimes is what it takes to get through the filters. I hope we get the results that occurred after that public “dissing”.

I love how everyone in the country is counting the tide all in for an sec championship and a national championship. LSU WILL beat Bama, and get back to the SEC championship game. Those boys down at the bayou know exactly what is on the line. It’s at home and it’s at night. Bama does not have enough fire power for LSU defense. Granted LSU doesn’t have any fire power either, which is why everything cancels eachother out and give me LSU by 3.

Good point about Gilliard saying he was mad and kicking butt in practise. Should have been anyway, right?

However……he can’t undo what Williams said. Giving that it’s it already out there and he was personally implicated, his comments/reaction seem very appropriate. The boy was called out and embarrased. I would far rather him say/do what he did than sulk and say something like. “don’t look at me”.

Toss Sweep, don’t forget this is a Mark Richt coached team. We really never can be sure of what to expect until they hit the field. He did remark before the SC game that we didn’t need any additional motivation. Glad to see some players taking leadership, but this isn’t really the kind of leadership that should be required. Coaches should be able to make sure the players on the field are motivated. That’s done by competition for playing time. Earn it, or sit.

Why does it have to come to a player calling out the rest of the defense? Is it now, at this point in the season that eveyone has a startling revelation and says, Wow, I’ve been playing too soft, it’s time now to start playing with intensity.
Give me a break, this defense has some primadonnas out there that are just going through the motions, trying to get through the season intact and injury free so that they cam make a good showing at the NFL Combine and improve their draft stock. And to think that some returned for their senior season in order to supposedly take care of unfinished business. On top of that, you have the suspensions. If I were the senior leaders on this team, I would have gone off after the first game and held all of my teamates accountable for their unmotivated play.
This defense has played horrendous, especially the defensive front. They don’t fire off of the ball, are consumed and tied up by inferior offensive linemen, can’t shed blocks and the only way that they end up in the backfield is after the play is over. The defense in general plays slow and can’t tackle.
I like how they talk about how much better they are after this week’s practive. Really, all of a sudden you’re better? And the defense is now going to play the way that everyone thought they were capable of playing up to this point. Give me a break!
Grantham should have been the one to hold them accountable for the terrible play since the start of the season but since he coaches with no passion either, I guess that rubs off on the players.

It all depends on how this is applied. If Gilliard takes what Williams says, and then takes it out on the Gators, then all of this will be good. But if things go wrong in the game, I can see fighting on the sideline, which means we’ll get killed.
Gilliard was right to stand up for himself. Williams was out of line calling him out in public. Personally I would have told Williams to shove it up his a$$ if I were him. But I’m someone who’s motivated when I’m pissed off. Whether Mike and Christian are remains to be seen.

Gillard has sacrificed for the team over the years without complaining. Last year Ogletree got hurt and Gillard, finally getting a chance to play, came up big. This year he was placed on the depth chart behind an underling before the season began. That had to effect him. Gillard has starting LB talent. He probably feels slighted. In reality the DL has not played up to last years level and that effects the LBs. Tyson graduated to the pros and he was an under rated DE. No one has played at his level this year. As for Shawn Williams, he has missed some assignments and had some untimely penalties but when there is a definite lack of a pass rush the DBs can’t cover the WR forever. This break down is a TEAM effort – not just the LBs.

Why does it take a young man on the football team to come out and address a problem that the coaches should be speaking to? His feelings are that of every Dawg fan: why is a defense that was ranked 5th nationally in total defense the year before (and returned virtually everyone), picked to win the SEC East division, and having a dream schedule that was the envy of every SEC team looking more like a sieve when playing much more inferior teams? The defense I saw last year and the one this year are not even close. Why? I just don’t understand why many Georgia fans continue to defend the pathetic excuses and cliches that are given every week. How many more games does this team have to lose (or barely win against team they should steamroll) before the coaches and AD will actually say this is not acceptable?

Is sound like Rodney Garner is not teaching these players to get off the blocks. Where is Garner during the game? Is Garner in the box with Bobo? Does TG caoch the defense by himself without any of his assistants? EVERY OTHER TEAM IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS COACHES ON THE SIDELINE COACHING, YELLING, ETC. It’s so funny. Williams is 100% correct! I was rewinding the game and kind of doing my own defensive evaluation and I kept asking “who is #35 ?!?!?” On one play in particular he is backside linebacker on the play and the TE flows from the backside and engages him in a block. Gilliard buckles and gets pancaked and this TE was no Gronkowski! lol This guy (80) looked more like a lanky receiver. The running back went right by Gilliard on his back for 12 yards. It was a recurring theme. He got pushed around all night and showed no explosiveness. The next day the comments from Williams broke and it took the words right out of my mouth. Gilliard shouldn’t see the field except from the bench.

scapegoating the fourth ILB in Senior Christian Robinson isn’t going to solve the problem. I don’t have a big problem with William’s comments. SOMETHING is definately wrong with the D and probably multiple things.
I don’t think Gilliard and Robinson are any more a part of the problem than the rest of the players. Sure, they can probably play better than they are… but Tree and Emarlo got plenty of snaps against South Carolina and Kentucky, so I think this problem is a lot more widespread than just our backup inside linebackers.
Kentucky ran the ball down our throats and were sucessful in converting a 3rd and 15 and I believe a 3rd and 13 by just running the ball up the middle. Anyone who was on the field during those two plays shouldn’t be pointing fingers.

There is one thing that is almost always constant on any championship team, leadership. Where does that it come from? It starts with the man in charge, setting the expectations, laying the foundation, providing the discipline, surrounding himself with quality, qualified individuals and developing them, laying out a long term plan. The intangible is “chemistry”. This team has neither, yet they are 6-1. Short of the Oline this is a championship caliber team personnel wise, and the Oline is capable of supporting that IMO.

I don’t understand why we always have to come up with gimmicky motivation. This is another example of a way to try and motivate the players for a big game. This time it came from a player. Why aren’t our coaches and players amped up to stuff our opponent every saturday. I don’t understand why we always need some form of extra motivation to play hard. Coaches and players should be giving maximum effort and playing at the top of their game all the time. Florida is treating this as just another game and business as usual, and we’re having to have a player come out and call our own team soft in front of the national media to motivate and prepare.
I’m a big dawg fan and looking for a big win this weekend. I also want to see the coaches step up and get this team prepared.

This is making me feel better about this game this weekend but on saturday night i admit i thought we had no chance. These comments by shawn definitely hurt some feelings and called out the coaches and sort of backed us into a corner and a team backed in a corner is dangerous. i feel like we have something to prove on defense and that will definitely help us. we might not win but i got a feeling we at least keep it close.
I totally disagree with Mark Richt about a loss is a loss no matter if you lose by one point or by 28 points. I have watched a ton of football and sometimes a team might lose but you see that they are a good team maybe that night things did not go there way but they still kept it close and almost won with things not going their way. You also see games were you hate to see either team lose bc you have just watched both teams give it everything they had and maybe it comes down to the last play or overtime. everyone has seen one of those games where you think it sucks someone has to lose this one. Well, when i see georgia get totally embarrassed on national tv again by a top ten team with college gameday (same when bama killed us) like they did against south carolina, i dont see how richt can say that he should have at least said the coaches let the team and the fans down bc the coaches are the ones getting paid in college so you cant throw kids under the bus unless your punk head coach and you see that from time to time. i just dont see how mark can say that i know he was trying to make the situation not seem as bad as it was but it was bad and i cant take that kind of pansy @ss response. man up and say they spanked our butt and i let everyone down or we let everyone down.

If players felt disrespected and amped up their play then it served it’s purpose. I’ve been in “in house” meetings before, they don’t work. When someone goes public you better step it up a notch. As a former college athlete and now a coach I’ve come to understand that players always may think they are giving a 100% but you can always get more out of them. If this doesn’t light a fire under their butts nothing will. I’d do a follow up interview with Williams on Friday just to poke the fire another couple of times.

Most of the time a team reflects the attitude of the coach. I’m not saying that a coach should always been screaming, throwing tantrums, lose his composure, etc…but there’s a fine line between remaining calm in the midst of adversity and showing a total lack of emotion and enthusiasm. Nothing really seems to get CMR fired up; the team seems to play like that. Not saying this is the only problem, as the team has fared well in past years, but I think it important now more than ever to show some real fire & passion from the head coach.

We may as well just play a rerun tape every year because we never correct any of the problems associated with the team. I am just going to be more realistic about my Dogs from now on. 8 to 10 wins a year and a mid teir bowl game is what I will now expect. That will save me from my 32 year disapointment. A real team plays like Alabama, they bury teams that they are expected to bury and they just don’t get blown out like our Dogs do at least once or twice a year. If it takes smearing teammates in the media to get the team motivated, do they even need a DC to lead them. This is sad commentary on a sad season. Heard Mark Packer on the radio earlier in the week bashing UGA, saying that they are the most disappointing and underacheiving(with all that talent on both sides of the ball) team in the NCAA this season. He also said that with the talent difference, UGA should be able to win Saturday, but probably will not. The reason is quite obvious…. COACHING, or a lack thereof. Florida has it; Georgia does not.

They have only showed up at best a few quarters this year. It’s just sad that it took a player to call them out and not a coach!

It’s funny that everyone refers to all the “talent” on the Georgia defense, and then in the next breath they say how bad the defense has played. Seven games into the season, if a defense is playing poorly, isn’t it time to question the assumption that they’re talented? The confirmation of actual talent is on-field production. Talent and hype are not the same thing.

Seriously?
It takes another player calling out the defense before they can get motivated?
Playing for a top ranked team doesn’t motivate you? A full ride scholarship doesn’t motivate you? Your highly paid coaches aren’t motivating you?
The UGA football program needs to be blown up and rebuilt. This season, and ESPECIALLY those comments are the proof. McGarity has lost control. Richt has lost control.

Loose cannons sink the strongest of ships. Maybe it needed to be said but not through the media. I now understand why more coaches are going to the one voice system. CMR allows way too much media access.
I look for the Dawgs to play there best game of the year and win convincingly. Nothing about Florida should scare you match up wise. Let the players play and keep the game plan simple. Defense should focus only on effecting the quarterback. If I were Granthem I would watch the tape of last years Alabama/Florida game. Nothing has changed in the play calling since Brantley went down.

I’m thinking defense is the second most important issue vs the gators. If we can keep Murray upright and able to throw we win, gators can’t match our offense. We have better overall receivers this year and if Murray can get time to pitch it they will catch it..big if I know…and then if the receivers are catching it we will be better able to run it and we have a lot better run game this year.

Football 101. Motivate your players. If your coaches don’t know that, don’t do it or can’t do it, then by all means back off and let a player do it. In a program devoid of leadership, Coach Williams has stepped up to do the job while they get the money. Good leadership simply doesn’t care how many people will be angry, feel uncomfortable or unloved when they are told to do their job.

Looks like Gilliard got his feelings hurt. Good. As for his interview, all I hear is talk, talk, talk. Hit someone Saturday and I’ll be a believer.
We are neutered dawgs
That’s exactly the samething I was thinking when I heard their comments.
Hey when I coached HS Football there were times when I used different players to callout their team mates when they were not giving 100%. It proved to be affective on many occasions. There’s something about hearing comments like that from your peers. It makes a difference. Let’s hope it will make difference on Saturday also.

I haven’t seen a defensive player, especially linebackers, put their facemasks on the runners numbers and run thru him. We might run them down, but we very seldom take them head on.Our defensive backs have been lost since the Missouri game. We may have the Al Groh syndrom. Pro defensive schemes that are too complicated. Bottom line is that we better play D soon.

What percentage have you been giving this past season, sir? And I hate that word disrespected. It’s totally ghetto. the proper term is lack of respect or Rodney Dangerfield no respect. How can the defense even look in teh mirror after the 1st drive against KY? My god, man, if not for teh hustle of a former walk-on you might have lost the friggin game on and onside kick. Where is John Jenkins, Cornelius Washington, Brandon Smith? CW is supposed to be a high round draft in 2013? Really? BY WHO? Please don’t let it be the Falcons. Heck, Ray Edwards has more sacks the CW and Jenkins combined. What’s that say. I say bring on Gaethers full time. He plays his butt off and THAT, my friends, takes some doing.

based upon their collective performance so far this year i will give ya’ll a preview of the game:
1. fl will come out and kick the dawgs in the teeth
2. dawgs will stagger and jump behind by 14 points
3. fl will control both lines of scrimmage the whole game
4. dawgs offensive will do diddley squat all game
5. dawgs defense will “settle down” after the half
unknowns:
1. how many turnovers will the dawgs commit? more than 2 will push the point gap to 21+
2. will the dawgs give up the special teams big play? highly probable based upon performance this yr
to help ya’ll get through this embarrassment, i recommend copious amounts of your adult beverage of choice
the defense is following the advice they are receiving from their informal sports agents about protecting themselves for the upcoming draft.

I don’t care what sport it is you have to hurt some feelings sometimes and have discipline and the UGA program has done neither lately. If a player was giving 100%, then they shouldnt be offended by Williams remarks. Leadership at the college level comes from both the coaches and players. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, we dont necessarily say the right thing…but his intent is clearly understood with the ppl who know Williams the best. Jarvis, Murray, Washington, etc…are all considered the leaders of this team…but have yet to see them become one. Williams took matters into his own hands. And if anyone looks at the film, LBs have been getting pushed around..they’re not meeting RBs in the hole. They are making tackles…but thats after 6-8 yard gains…which doesnt stop drives. Dline is more effective with Geathers and Jenkins in there. Those two require 4 linemen to block em…giving LBs more opportunities to make plays, but they’re slow to read the play. When is Grantham going to blitz from the inside positions?

Was talking with a buddy of mine and he pointed something out about the SC game that i didn’t think about:
We lost M. Bennett on thurs before for the game. So the Offense had practiced all week on plays with him as the #1 WR. So Sat players had to be moved around and that proved to be a big reason why Murray’s timing was off. He has two weeks to work with the WRs and goes out and has a 30-38, 429yd 4 TD performance. The ONLY game the offense has struggled in is the one where we lost our #1 WR on the LAST day of game prep.
Now with S. Williams firing up not only the D, but the O as well, I think UF is in for a huge Surprise.
Oh and to you pathetic gator fans that like to post 18-4 or 18 of 22, get a life, the record is 48-40-2. We STILL own the Gators by almost a decade of wins, so give the PARTIAL HISTORY a rest.

Dude seriously, think about it. Most teams lose a key player to injury either preseason or during a game. RARELY do you lose one during practice week, and even more rare to lose one on the last day of practice before a game.

Joey, the 2 (what I consider better Offenses) that UF faced Tn, TAMU actually moved the ball on UF. Also Vandy had 363 yard, and 23 first downs. SC just imploded on thier own. So baring that, I’m not really as worried about moving the ball. We just need to be able to run it a little.
I’d be more concerned about the flip side of that. Stopping thier run, and forcing the worst passing team in the league to beat us that way.

Pease is definitely an upgrade from Weis who only knows how to coach big slow plodding offenses. Weis had a Ferrari and drove it like a ridding lawn mower.
I personally think the game is going to come down to two key match ups and which team has more combined wins on each side:
UGA’s Front Seven on D vs UF O-line
UGA’s ability to run against UF’s D
Neither team can afford to become one dimensional. If Bobo is smart he’ll open up with bubble screens and throw in a few toss sweeps to spread UF’s D, that will open up things in the middle.
O-Line MUST protect Murray, and give him time, if he has time he will carve up the UF secondary.
Grantham and the players CAN NOT allow Gilislee (apology on the sp) gash us up the middle.
Those are the keys to the game for UGA
UF has to create turnovers and give themselves short fields to work with as they did against SC. Jump out to an early lead, hit hard and try to break UGA’s players will. If UF trys to get into a shoot out they will definitely lose. Time of possession is key as well, UF has to keep Murray on the bench and wear the D down.
Make no mistake about it, this game will come down to who’s will to impose theirs is greater.
All trash talk aside, this game will likely go down as one of the great ones that we’ll be telling our grandkids about one day. Ton on the line, both highly ranked, should be a classic!

Gilliard is responding the right way. Also, IMO if Williams had kept his comments behind closed doors they probably wouldn’t have had the effect they’re having. The D has had ample opportunity to get their crap together and haven’t. Shining the light on that might do wonders for their production.

The most talented individuals do not always comprise the best team. If you want to look at spirit and intensity, look at the plays that Connor Norman (on side kick recovery) and Richard Samuel (threw blocker aside, made tackle on fake punt) have made. If the starters cannot play like that, maybe they shouldnt be starters.

Stop the run and go up by 14 or more DAWGS will win, they are dead last in passing but with the way they run the football they dont have to pass much, contain the qb on 3rd and long situation because he likes to scramble. Robinson should not be on the field in 3rd down situations period the kid is slow there qb will do just what shaw did and run by him. I believe they will try to run the same thing the chickens ran with long throws over top our safeties have to stay home and make a play when the play is there to be made. We have to play fast and smart! And bobo use all of Murray’s GOD given ability that’s including his legs dont make the kid stay in the pocket if they give him lanes to run like SC did. Its going to take a complete game by all phase to win this game offense defense special teams. Everybody know that the first 10 12 plays are scripted just need to change and give there defense a different look. GO DAWGS!!!!!

We can call out the D…they can do better. Calling out the o-line would be all-for-naught. We simply do not have SEC ability there, and most of ya’ll know it. We will have to throw quick-outs, and a few old-fashioned “drop quickly and fling it” plays and have some luck to boot. We cannot match up up front at all. We will need to TRY to coach around it, and then RECRUIT TOP-TIER LINEMEN for the next few years, as this is still where it is won. It will be tough to coach around them, though; hard to “hide” an o-line.
Congrats on calling out the D, though….we have the talent there….just ain’t makin’ the plays…

I’m happy someone is pissed off on the defence. Shaun Williams………..Here is one fan that LOVED what you said. HOPEFULLY……..someone will call the O-line out. And our fullback. We were all thinking national championship…….even players on the team. ALL of these players need to get HOT and Pissed off and play like a DAMN football player. Gilliard, if you are so worried about disrespect, clean up your foul mouth and learn to express yourself intelligently. The best thing you can do right now for yourself, your team and Dawg fans is to pipe down and do your talking on the field. Gilliard truth hurts dont it? Give up 20pts a game is just a sorry excuse for “just showing up”. Yeah your defense plays like little girls and youre afraid youre gonna break a nail or something. There arent any men on that defense.
Div II Schools played toe to toe with you. Gave up 3-100 yard rushers. Dismal total yards allowed.
Looked like idiots on coverage.
Best not enter any draft at the end of the season…….. your best bet is to trying to get on an NFL Scrimmage Squad.
You have suceeded in making Todd Grantham the laughing stock in CFB. Embarrased your families, friends, relatives, fans, student body, University and coaches.
Oh should i least forget the ESPN Announcers who was shocked by the lack of ability. Maybe 2 players out of that whole defense will get into the NFL.
You have got to be the worst 6-1 team in CFB. Certainly the most over rated team. No pride, no urgency, no goals, none of the traits that made past Georgia Defenses great.
The Freshmen play harder than the Juniors and Seniors on that team do. Yeah your mommy and daddy will always tell you how great you are but deep down you know youre not.
Your defense ranks nowhere in CFB, no take-aways , but almost bottom of every poll.
You even were given the softest schedule in CFB and have had to do miracolous recoveries toward the end to win that game.
Are you really a top 25 team?
You have 6 games remaining and i dont see you winning but those 3 and that certainly isnt Florida.
You may very well go down as the worst Defensive Unit in Georgia history……a memory of a lifetime.
With the easiest schedule.

What is damning to this coaching staff is that players can’t give 100% on a regular basis. Just as bad is the constant state of confusion on the defensive side of the ball. I can’t recall a program that was constantly talking itself up with really no translation to on field play.
Coach Grantham will be back coaching a position in The NFL in 2 years. He is not cut out to coordinate a defense on this level. I don’t know why there is still so much unwarrented faith in Grantham.
I think this will spell the end of the Richt era….UF 35 – UGA 14.

I think it is good if he offended some of the players as the defense has disappointed a whole lot this year. It is time for them to step up, in the biggest game of the year for them, and shed the wimp attitude. Inspiration can come from a variety of ways and if it takes a team mate calling out his slacking buddies, then so be it. Now let’s see that fire on the field Saturday and make this a good game.

it seems that learning the 3-5 defense is a three yr learning task, the players are constantly missing assignments,yo to shawn w we have too many fresh/soph,think we were better off w/ 4 down linemen.as last year the defensive backs are not getting it done on a constant basis.line backers are soft also, man this is a coaching problem.think about what uga is paying for this gorup of guys, maybe a girl defensive coach could motivate this group, think about it.

I think if you look at the actual games, you will see that UGA actually does rush four people most of the time. The problem lies in the fact that the three guys most counted to shut down the middle aren’t doing that great a job in doing so. If they fail to do that, it is up to the linebackers to do a better job, and they have been woefully lacking most of the time and out of position to make the play.
It really isn’t a coaching problem as Shawn Williams pointed out; It is a player problem. They have played way too soft, and they have counted too much on J.J. to be effective a lot of times and be a superman. He is drawing double and even triple teams, so that should at least create an imbalance but nobody seems to be stepping up to make the other team pay for that imbalance. If the Ol doesn’t have to double team the nose or tackle, or even if they do, can handle the LB playing, it makes for a long day for the defense. When a runner does get to the outside, UGA has been slow to react, and once again, out of position. That is a player problem, not a coaching problem.

If the shoe fits … I guess it’s not ideal that a teammate has to go public to air frustrations. But, the ultimate result for a gladiator / warrior (which is what a D1 football player is) it to play better. If you call one another out, and it’s unfair, I’m sure the guys can find some drill at practice ‘to set things straight’. I suspect the ultimate result will be a better defense.

If you think that this defense is bad, wait until next year after we lose 9 starters. Grantham’s defense has never been effective against good teams…can’t stop the run w/out commiting 8 in the box, players always out of position as we give up numerous big plays in every game, no pass rush even when we blitz, & general confusion on the field as we are never lined up correctly before the play starts.
This defense has as much talent as any team in the country but plays like it is coached & ranked…47th overall.

“I felt disrespected. And, yes, I definitely took it personally.” Well the poor, pwecious, SWEET, wittle darlin,. This pos actually thinks that he’s ENTITLED to respect. Yet his own words prove that he doesn’t deserve any, doesn‘t even have any for himself OR his team: “…..and basically its given me motivation to go out there and give 100 percent.” … What percentage has he been giving up to now? If I were his coach, he’d be on the third team until he decided, on his own, that he owed it to everyone to give 100 percent all the time. After that, it’s up to the coaches to “motivate” a little something extra.

This is Richt, don’t forget that. All this 1-9 record stuff against top ten competition is about Richt’s ineptness, and that speaks for itself. I’m all for UGA, a great school; not for for Richt though. UGA can be a winner with good coaching; Richt’s a loser, and this loser’s best days are far back in the rearview mirrow. Today, again, I’m not subjecting myself to watching Richt’s entire sorry coaching stuff show up clueless and have UGA get the hell kicked out of it as South Carolina has done. Florida destroyed the same South Carolina team. Why is the $3.2 million man gonna show up? Only to get the $3.2 million. Richt knows he can’t hang with either good teams or good coaches. Fire Richt! Fire McGarity for not firing Richt!
