ATHENS – Reaction to the incendiary comments from Georgia safety Shawn Williams about the Bulldogs “soft” defense and what players should be playing and how much fell mostly into two categories for teammates and coaches on Tuesday: One, there was a level of truth in what he said and, two, it was no big deal.
Overall Williams’ comments were considered as a motivational ploy by an impassioned player.
“I think Shawn is just a real passionate guy,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “He loves Georgia and loves his team and wants us to play the best we can possibly play. . . . I think it was more public than you’d like. But, I mean, I really don’t think he meant any harm by it. I really don’t. I think his teammates know that and so it’s really not an issue.”
Williams told reporters after Monday night’s practice he thought Georgia is “playing too soft as a defense. That goes for the D-line, linebackers, corners, safeties, everybody. We’re just not playing with the same attitude we were last year. . . . I’m trying to see if I have to take somebody’s helmet off and slap them and say, ‘what’s going on’? We’re not playing with any emotion right now. Period.”
Richt said he met with Williams on Tuesday morning.
“It was more him coming to me,” Richt said. “I think he read the comments and didn’t like the way – not necessarily how it was reported – but when he read it himself, he was like, ‘that’s not the tone or at least not what I was trying to communicate from my heart.’
“He’s an emotional guy and he wants to have success and he wants to try to help motivate not only himself but his teammates to play better,” Richt continued. “That’s not necessarily a bad thing. You’d just as soon not have it as public as it was, but I really don’t think it’s a big issue.
Of course, Williams’ comments were received a little differently by linebackers Mike Gilliard and Christian Robinson, who were in an indirectly criticized by Williams’ remarks that Alec Ogletree and Amarlo Herrera should never come out of games.
“No one wants to hear they’re soft,” Robinson said. “I really had to sit down and look at myself last night. I go to church and a verse it made me think about was, ‘everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger.’ I think we have a great team. One thing I learned in my four years is you really have to stick together. I really think if we do what we’re supposed to do we’ll be successful.”
Gilliard was not among the players available for interviews at Tuesday’s media session, but shared his thought via Twitter.com.
Around lunchtime Tuesday, a tweet from Gilliard’s account, @GZ_TAUGHTME, read: “Laughing at what someone just told me to go read about yesterdays post practice comments.”
Moments later came another tweet: “Don’t mention my name until you go back and look at the results these past two seasons.”
Herrera started the first four games at “Mo” inside linebacker and the last to at the “Mike” position, which he shares with Gilliard and Robinson. Williams and Herrera are the Bulldogs’ top two tacklers at 51 and 50 stops, respectively.
Herrera insists Williams’ statement won’t cause problems within Georgia’s locker room. “It didn’t put me in an awkward situation,” he said. “I talked to Christian a minute ago downstairs. We didn’t even talk about this.”
But Herrera, who said he played less against Kentucky than he had all season, didn’t necessarily disagree with Williams’ premise.
“He’s just saying what he thinks,” Herrera said. :That’s his opinion. It needed to be said sometime soon. Somebody needed to say something. He took it upon himself and said it.We’re not playing to the level we need to be playing.”
Richt was asked if he agreed with Williams’ assessment.”Well, that’s how he felt about it so he has a right to say that,” he said. “Do we want to get better at stopping the run? Yeah. You better believe it.”
Richt reserved judgment as to whether it will serve Williams’ comments will serve the purpose of motivating the team.
“It might,” he said. “We’ll see.
Senior safety Sanders Commings thinks Williams’ words were received in the right spirit.
“I think everyone will be professional. We’re grown men out here. We can all take criticism. I think it will just motivate everyone to play hard, practice hard and get ready for Florida.”
The timing, Commings said, was right. “This is the most important game on our schedule right now. It’s pretty much the ball for it all. The winner of this game controls their own destiny for the last four games. So I’m glad Shawn made those statements before the Florida game because it’d been too late if he had waited until afterward.”
Robinson acknowledged that Williams’ comments have motivated him.
“I think today is going to be a great practice because I know no one is going to want to be soft, and if that was his goal, he achieved it,” Robinson said with a smile.
FOLLOWING IS MY TRANSCRIPTION OF WILLIAMS’ EXCHANGE WITH REPORTERS MONDAY NIGHT:
First he was asked what they had to do to stop Florida’s rushing attack . . .
“I don’t care who they have running the ball, we’ve just got to stop playing soft. We’re playing too soft as a defense. That goes for the D-line, linebackers, corners, safeties, everybody. We’re just not playing with the same attitude we were last year. I don’t know what it is.”
On whether he’d brought up with team . . .
“I told them in the Kentucky game. After the first series, I told everybody we played too soft. They got the ball at the 20 and went 80 yards right up the middle. I came to the sideline and said ‘y’all are playing soft.’ It gets frustrating because I’m sitting here and I’m giving all I got and I feel like I’ve got some guys that (are) not. I feel we’ve got some guys that are in a whole different place.”
Who?
“Everybody. Our side of the ball is mostly juniors and seniors, so that’s everybody.”
What he thinks the cause is . . .
“I don’t know what it is. We’ve just got to quit playing soft and worrying about every other thing besides football and just go out and play football and let everything else take care of it self.”
Asked if players were worried about the NFL . . .
“I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s the NFL or worried about messing up or worried about a game down the road. We’ve just got to do what we do and play physical football. And we’re not. That’s what you’ve got to do to win.”
On whether draw plays took away aggression . . .
“No matter what you see, you’ve got to react and play football. Right now I don’t feel like we’re doing that. We’re not reacting and just playing football. Right now, Florida’ play very physical and they’re going to come out and try to just manhandle you. So I’m really looking forward to seeing what we do. Somebody’s gonna get punched in the mouth. It’s going to be us or them. Whoever gets punched in the mouth is going to have to decide what do we do now. You’re either going to give in or you’re going to fight back. Point blank that’s what we’ve got to do.”
How this team reacts to getting ‘punched in mouth’ so far . . .
“We’re not doing anything about it.”
What can you do about it . . .
“I don’t know. I’m trying to see if I have to take somebody’s helmet off and slap them and say, what’s going on? Wew’re not playing with any emotion right now. Period.”
Does softness extend to offense . . .
“I can only account for the defense. I don’t know what the defense is doing. I can only control my side of the ball.”
On playing better in second halves . . .
“It seems like they want to play hard when they want to, but we can’t just turn it on and off. It just takes them a while to realize we’ve got to get our stuff together and play.”
On what’d he do to fix things . . .
“Personally, if I was the coaches, I can’t tell them what to do, but I’d have Amarlo Herrera in the game more. I wouldn’t bring him out. I’d leave him and Ogletree in the game. That’s what I want to see, as a player. I want to see Amarlo and Ogletree in the game at linebacker. I don’t want to see anybody else at linebacker. I feel like they’re two guys that are going to go out and give you all they got, no matter if they mess up or do right. I feel like they’re going to get to the ball and tackle. That’s what we need.”
What is it about Herrera over Christian Robinson and Mike Gilliard . . .
“I just feel like he’s better. I don’t know what he’s doing that’s better than them, getting off blocks, getting around blocks; he gets to the football, and that’s what we need. Somebody who gets to the football and tackles.”
How long has it been this way?
“The whole season. I don’t know what it is. It seems like we’re waiting to get started. We haven’t even started yet.”
What are hyou doing personally to rectify . . .
“I do all I can. That’s what I’m saying. What do I have to do. Do I have to slap somebody to get them started or what? What do they respond to? I’m still trying to figure that out.”
On whether he things because of last year’s success some felt they didn’t have to prove themselves . .
“I think so. I think so.”

Someone needs to light a fire under them. They are soft!! If the Dawgs are serious about being successful, the best players need to be out there. Otherwise, get ready for more disappointment and another ho-hum bowl.

Dawgs defense is not together as a team and has not been all season — every team has gotten over 300 yards offense except Tennessee who got over 400.

Good for coach Shawn Williams. Since the people in position to do so wouldn’t call anyone out and light a fire under their a$$, I’m glad at least a player had the &@lls to do it! I find it quite refreshing. Something tells me this will be an inspired pack of Dawgs this wknd….Go Dawgs!

What about our d line? They’ve as bad or worse than anyone on defense and they seem to get a pass? This is a team game and not gilliard nor robinsons fault…solely. They’re all guilty

The comments will prove to be a non issue within the team, and will hopefully motivate the defense (and the entire) team to man up and take the fight to Florida. I don’t care what has transpired so far, the season begins this Saturday. Win in Jacksonville and this season can still be pretty special. If not, we can worry about that Sunday.

I think this quote by Gillard- “Don’t mention my name until you go back and look at the results these past two seasons.” is the real problem. It’s not the name on the back of the jersey that matters, but all these kids care about are their stats and “getting respect”. Play like a team and no one gets called out Mike. Man up DAWGS

CRob and Gilliard needed to be called out. If Richt won’t do it, the leaders will. They gave up a lot of runs up the middle on crucial 3rd and long downs.
Hererra is a beast and comes hard.
Ogletree leaves a mark.
But Florida will be htting the edges, so it really won’t matter who’s playing inside linebacker.
It’s really who is playing DE and OLB.

I think part of the difficulty with playing defense is you have to play with an amped up, physical, rip off someone’s head attitude but you also have to stay disciplined and play assignment football. I think we have been playing soft but just going for a kill shot on a crossing route is not going to fix our issues. Williams is a hard hitter but he needs to play his role on Sat. i.e. not come up to quick on a play action fake and let a receiver run right by him into open space. The whole D needs to play with a controlled intensity.

I agree with Shawn , we have been very soft up front ! Getting blown off of the ball by lesser talent & it seems we are often out of position pre-snap , i would like us to use 4 down lineman from time to time to slow down the run !! Our D ends simply have not got it done so far this year . Also double digit missed tackles every game. This unit can play if they get on the same page & just play hard fundamental football !! GO DAWGS !

I’d be surprised if this turmoil helps the team at all this weekend. In fact, I would venture to guess they will fold like a chair if things go the wrong way early. Best that we take the ball if we win the coin toss and hope we can stem the tide early. I greatly fear what this team will do if Florida gets the ball and marches it right down the field and scores.
Hope I am wrong, but our record against ranked teams tell me otherwise.

Or…………..Richt could of said ” Other than Vandy, we have played flat and uninspired football all year, and I guess Shawn got tired of waiting on me or someone on the staff to light a fire under this team and to call it like it is, so for that, I’m happy. What’s for lunch”……..

Sounds like Gilliard may be a bit chippy about it, but sounds like most received it well. Shawn is simply doing what the coaches should do and that’s call it like he sees it. If nothing else, I think it will motivate the players to not have fans and media point to them as “oh THAT must be one of the ones Williams was talking about”. Sometimes a little public embarrassment can be just the thing a team needs. I think it will trickle over to the O-line as well.

This whole thing says alot about what the problem has been for all their “team” talk and were in this together- in reality, its only about “I”. This will prove to fuel the downfall in Jax Saturday- now players at each other……same crap just a different year. 38-16 Gators…

UGA had better be ready for the fact that Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease, who came from Boise State, knows all about overly aggressive defenses and how to take advantage. You can play hard and man up all you want to, but beware the reverse, the screen, the double-pass, and the like.

Again, the only issue I have is why aren’t the coaches or THE HC coming out and saying this? Why are they putting this in the back of a 21 year old kid to point out ONE OF THE MANY ISSUES with this team?
After SC got throttled by FL last weekend, Spurrier came out and said that there were going to be changes made on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball! You could tell he was ticked off when he came to the microphone! Spurrier stated that they were going to find some people who wanted to play football and these mistakes would not happen again!
Yet, our coaching staff allows 18-22 year old kids to speak to the media about an issue that the entire nation sees. But CMR tells us everything is rosey and the team is fine…that he is not worried! Enough BS…let’s get some real coaches that will address the problems head-on and quit sweeping everything under the rug!!!

I guess that was CMR’s way of agreeing with Williams. CMR should have said it himself several games back. I prefer a lot more fire and accountability from someone that makes more in one season than most of us will make in a lifetime. One way or another I think we’ll know where we’re headed after Saturday. The die should be cast with another embarassing beatdown.

Georgia has had about 3 weeks to prepare for this game. After hearing that Fla. beat down SC, the pressure was there. They did just enough to win. That was hard to watch. My son kept asking me whats wrong with Georgia dad? I just told him they never play good under pressure. And they never do. At least under Richt. Not since 2002 anyway. I really think we come out ready to play. I think Fla is emotionaly drained and beat up right now. Shawn Williams became the vocal leader for this weekend. He asked for it and now hes stuck with it. You have the balls to bark, now he has to bite. Look for Georgia to put together a complete game this weekend. Dawgs hold off a late Fla drive and put the lights out say……… 24 to 20

When the AJC and Cox Media Group-Atlanta upgraded the look and feel of the AJC.com website, they decided to postpone the really crucial part: changing the blogging interface so that real log-ins would be required. That was not done because of “priorities” and “reallocation of funds.” Oh, the ad revenue will probably increase because of the pretty new look, but you, the end user are apparently less important than the window dressing.
By deferring the upgrade to the blogging environment they made the choice that certain features are going to continue as before. This means that somebody with Cox Media Group-Atlanta will have to manually remove offending posts when requested by users.
That means that
- racist
- misogonistic
- obscene
- homophobic
- threatening
- name calling
posts, as well as trolling creeps posing as other users, particularly on the sports blogs,
will be allowed to continue.
This is business-as-usual for Cox Media Group-Atlanta
and the AJC.com, I guess. That promise of enhanced customer experience falls real short for end users, doesn’t it?
In order to protect your children from this trash content, I suggest that you set up individual user accounts in your operating system. For example, in Windows you keep the Admin account for yourself only, with a secret login name and password. Then, set up login accounts for the kids. As Admin, you can then enable PARENTAL CONTROLS to block offensive sites on the web. For your kids, I think that http://www.ajc.com web site should be blocked, because the content is certainly offensive. You don’t want your children to be engaged in posting with these creeps, do you?
If you are concerned about the Cox Media Group-Atlanta’s wrong-headed priorities, let them know via e-mail or phone call. You are the customer, and their senior management claim to want to be sensitive to your customer experience.

Note to CMR: STHU. Just agree with what the player said, stick up for your guy, and move on. Instead, as usual, he tries to soften the blow and ended up criticizing his own player in the process. “he meant no harm”. These guys have no edge and they know it. I bet they have it now. I’m glad Shawn Williams called out those soft players on his team. he was just saying what someone in his own family, a fan like you and me, has observed. Funny how you – Chip Towers – can’t keep your opinion out of these articles. I read – and invite everyone to read – a much better accounting of Shawn Williams comments in the Macon paper (macon.com). In your original article, you said “and Williams wasn’t above calling out a few teammates.” Actually he didn’t mention Robinson or Gilliard by name. Now Chip you’re saying it was simply a “motivational ploy.” I’m sorry – where did any Georgia player or coach say what were his heartfelt beliefs being a simple motivational ploy? No way can Muschump go to well for thrid game in row and have team ready. We got Gaytors right where we wants them with them overconfdencing on Dawgs. Dawgs is motivated cause all they hearing is about all mouth and no bite Gaytors. Gaytors is due for there normal Zook style choking game where they fumbles and interceptions like a block hands and heads stooges. That will cause Dawgs to exploit dumb Gaytors plays.

Where’s Grantham in all this? Why was Williams the one that had to ‘go public’? What I hope is that he, Williams, didn’t say anything publicly that the coaches hadn’t already said individually, and privately. Regardless, if this doesn’t serve as some kind of a motivator then we are truly in sad shape…of course even if it does motivate and it’s still not enough to win, then that’ll be, perhaps, even sadder.
And, Alec Ogletree...

..is as much to blame for the state of the team, propbably more so – I watched him intensly last Saturday night and he just plain sucked – and to think the S. Williams thinks he should be on the field at all times – his head is still in the mushrooms and he should not be on the field at all, and that goes for Rambo, too. They may have talent, but missing those 4 games and now trying to play catch up is hurting the Dawgs immensly, and we all know that CMR is all about letting the pot heads play, not because they play better than those who are not pot heads, but because they have “potential” to make plays…
Well, so far, they have not made any plays and they do not look like they care whether they are making plays or not..

The offensive and defensive lines are to slow. They brag about how big they are on both sides of the ball, but they forget (including the coaches) that they have to be able to move. Georgia has been dominated up front from smaller teams up front (Remember Boise State).

Williams plays his ass off. Maybe he shouldn’t reference individual players. Players play. Coaches coach. However, Williams didn’t say anything anyone who watches ESPN or SEC football doesn’t already know; GEORGIA’S DEFENSE HAS NOT PLAYED UP TO ITS POTENTIAL. If you don’t like the truth, CHANGE IT.

I think I pretty much figure out why UGA football is so stale. I think it’s all political. The coaches listen too much to Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh repeats his junk over and over again and makes lots of money. Likewise, UGA offense repeats the same old thing again and again, and hope to strike gold very time.
But the problem is, Limbaugh’s listeners are passive receivers, like babies resting sounder when they hear mommy’s breath. In the contrary, other SEC coaches are active executioners instead of passive listeners They would kill you when you repeat the same old stuff.
Like or not, my 2cents. Give it a laugh if you still can.

Talk about a lost coach! I agree with Williams comments as I had before they were public, but for a coach to let his team be split like this is beyond belief. What Richt should have said was, “well I told a few of the seniors that someone needed to step up and be vocal about what we wanted to achieve and how we go about it”. This way you take the focus off Shawn and don’t have Robinson, Gilliard and others sitting there waiting for the next guy to mess up, so they can say “look it’s not just me”. This is basic stuff we do in leadership and team building at any executive level and for CMR not to know how to handle this! The man should be gone as soon as the season is over, regardless of Saturday’s outcome.

It ain’t the players, it’s the defensive scheme. When LSU beat SC, the first thing the announcer said SC will see that LSU is coming after the passer, he will not be able stand in the pocket and dictate like he did against Georgia.
When you’re reading then reacting, you’re on your heels in a passive agressive stance. When you’re attacking, you force your opponents actions, which breeds turnovers.

My question to you is…What were the Gators doing in 1980? Or the decade of the 80’s? 70’s? 60’s? 50’s? 40’s? 30’s? I think EVERYONE GETS THE PICTURE HERE! The Gators have only been relevant for a couple of decades…that is 20 years to make it easier for you to understand!
UGA has won 5 National Championships–going by the way Alabama counts their 14–and how many does your gators have??? That is what I thought. When you have won as many games as UGA has over their lifetime or hell, even when you have won more games in THIS SERIES–then come back. Until then, go let down your own fan base, get some more schlitz and try passing out inside your trailer for a change, not under it!!!

I watched the Kentucky game last night for the first time. Ogletree is not getting the job done. He brought on the early season suspension and I don’t see hime bringing anything at all to the defense. Rambo playing about the same. Obviously Williams is talking about the failure to stop the inside run game when addressing the LBs. It was shocking how easy Kentucky ran on UGA’s DL and LBs. Stopping the run game is always the 1st priority of the defense. The defense is not playing team ball – not working together as a unit. Part of that is coaching and finding the right defensive scheme to fit the talent on hand. Giving up almost 5 yards on 1st down results in long drives that run down the defense and keeps the offense on the bench. UGA must be much better on 1st down. That said, they were equally awful at stopping 3rd and long. The play last week almost reminded of Willie Martinez

Lex, I won’t ask how, I’ve watched every UF game and the Gators have truely gotten better every week. Their QB doesn’t turn the ball over, even against good teams – A&M, LSU, SC. Both of their lines are far superior to ours and no need to mention special teams.

We had a defense ranked 5th. last year and have basically the same team back this year. the ability is there,The problem is when you look and play like crap and you squeeze a few wins out this is fine with the coaches it looks like. So coach shawn speped in and brought this thing to a head. Seeing he has lit a fire under some ashes maybe the players will produce as they should have all year. Go ahead and take away the 3 gifts(21 points), then the Gators come the 3rd quarter and score on the 1st 2nd and 3rd drive while holding SC to -1 yards in the 3rd quarter. The Gators would then win 23-11.

Another example of a coach making players “man up” is what coach Cal does with the Freshman at UK. All come in with talent, but when they get hit in the mouth by the other teams seniors, he doesn’t let them back down, he tells them “son, when I recruited you, you said you wanted to play in the NBA, well the guy in the NBA is going to hit you a lot harder than that guy just did” and he sends them back out there to “man up”. I’ll bet he doesn’t sing happy birthday or maybe a good night lullaby to them. Just saying.

The real problem here is that a player had to stand up and find a pair and call it like it is. Last year Muschamp didn’t need a player to tell the press his team was soft, HE told the press his team was soft. What does Richt say? “He meant no harm.” That’s the whole point coach! He DID mean harm! He meant to harm the feelings of of our mamby pamby players in the hopes it would motivate them to find a pair and play up to their potential! So what is C. Robinson’s response? To quote a nice scripture verse. Sorry Christian ~ WRONG ANSWER! SEC football is not Sunday school, son. It’s hard hitting, in your face, gonna kick your butt competition. As for the motivational ploy line, here’s what Richt said and the reason I used that description: “He’s an emotional guy and he wants to have success and he wants to try to help motivate not only himself but his teammates to play better.”

The dawgs are not as good as we wanted them to be. We had an easy schedule but are not going to win the tough games. I don’t think anyone expected the blow out by SC, but no one can think that they can beat Florida. We barely beat Florida last year and they are meuch better. It is dissappointing that the defense does nto seem to be performing as well, but lets face it, they under performed in some of the key big games last year too. My advice would be for dog fans to suck it up after the Florida game and enjoy the rest of the season. We may be able to finish 10 and 2. Then we will loose a ton of key players next year when we face a butal schedule next season and will probably drop 5 games before we even face Florida. All you folks complaining about a 2 loss season being a failure, what are you going to do with a 6 loss season or worse?

I had been thinking that our recent recruiting classes might have been overrated talent wise. No way that they could be so highly rated coming out of high school and then be playing so poorly. Then I realized that all of these guys were recruited by other top schools as well. So what’s the problem? Maybe , just maybe they are not getting “coached up”. Soft coaches produce soft players? Mmm, time for some changes on the staff? If the rest of this season goes downhill, hopefully our AD will address the problem and make some changes. Or, is that just wishful thinking? Hopefully Williams comments will build a fire under these guys, our coaches do not seem to be doing it! JMHO

There is something more meaningful and emotionally challenging when one if your respected peers team mates calls you out and he called out the whole defense with a little emphasis on a couple of players. You expect your coaches to do it but when one of your on does it takes on a whole different feeling. No one wants to embarrass there team mates or themselves when it has been made they extremely obvious. I think you will see a different team this Saturday, more focused and ready to hit someone. Doesn’t mean they will win but it does mean they will fight to the end and may the best team win.

To me it all lies on the Defense. Also Aaron Murray as I remember his first game against the gators and he was SUPER nervous. Not sure he ever settled down in that game? Of course he’s much older now. If the D decides to play and the O does well, then dawgs have a chance to keep it close. I’d take the gators and give the points. Richt, Bobo and Grantham will not adjust quickly enough, all 3 are poor live game managers. In the end the coaches lose the game for UGA.

Someone tell me how this does not point to a coaching problem? Getting the most out of the talent you have. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE IS SAYING HERE. You think Spurrier, Saban, Miles have problems convincing their team that last year was last year and they need to “prove themselves”?

Famous words by the terror of SEC football, HE MEAN’T NO HARM BY IT.
I wonder what Saban would have said, if one of his players had said he thought the defense was SOFT. he probably would have praised the guy for showing senior leadership and then probably commenced on doing something about it, like giving them a practice they won’t ever forget
We need someone hard nosed to run this team, that happens to be a football mastermind.Being a preacher ain’t got nothing to do with it. Tom Osborne was a Christian and he was hard nosed.
Nothing wrong with going bowling, swimming and singing happy birthday to recruits, but that’s what Richt is getting know for. What was Erk Russell know for?

How many times do you see a Bulldog player pull up when it seems an opponent is down. How often do we still see “bump” tackling? I have loved watching Herrera and Olgeltree for the last 2 years. Them 2 bring it. You can tell they like contact too. When they make a good hit it fires them up and it seems they’re lookig for more. Jarvis is another that plays with all he’s got! I hope he’s been just resting and that he’s fresh for the gaytors. I would love nothing more than to see the gaytors get punched in the mouth and quit. How long will you people hold on to this dream that he is going to get you there? It isn’t going to happen. Every year, you blame and want to fire one of the coordinators and sometimes it happens and then you get all giddy thinking that next year all will be well and it will be our year.
How has that worked out for you all?

Just the fact that all of you idiots who think that calling out your team mates to a reporter is a good thing shows why you spend your time on blogs. 90% of you losers haven’t played a snap of organized football since you played receiver in Pop Warner, and the other 10% can’t forget the fact that you started in high school. There are relationships, and dynamics on a team. Whether UGA is playing to their potential, and guys are giving their all is internal. If Williams wants to say those things in the locker room, sidelines, or practice is his prerogative as a leader on the team. Giving you fools more red meat to sink your moronic and destructive teeth into is a mistake, and UGA will be lucky to avoid the ramifications of a team divided after this. None of us like to be criticized, but in context we can grow. But to be criticized in public only breeds resentment and division. Enjoy short sighted, small minded fools. You deserve it.

Georgia fans wish their coach had this much fire! I can’t think of a coach that has made better second half adjustments than Will Muschamp. First half I expect it to stay close but no one has been able to match up with Florida’s physicality in the second half and whether the offense is impressive or not, depth and 4 quarters conditioning win games in the SEC. The depth and freshness of the DL will allow them to manhandle Georgia up front and control the line of scrimmage and make Aaron Murray throw the ball against arguably the best secondary in the country. However, I do expect Mark Richt to throw everything he’s got at the Gators because he understands what’s at stake and his team’s lackluster performances and lack of motivation the past few weeks will be under high scrutiny this week and weekend and will only get worse if the Dawgs are dominated physically.

I haven’t made a habit of commenting out here for awhile, but it seems like everyone is okay with Williams calling out his team and coaches. If I were the coach, I would sit his loud mouth arrss this weekend. No questions asked- you just don’t do this as a teammate or player. Not that us Jackets have anything positive to talk about, but I seriously doubt that anybody on GT’s team would ever say something like this out of fear of CPJ. Not saying he’s without fault at all, but we all know he wouldn’t stand for this sort of thing like Richt apparently is.. Trust me, CPJ has enough to worry about with our perfomance this year and our increasingly disinterested fanbase. But I think you’d be hearing about a suspension right now instead of an “aw shucks, he didn’t really mean it the way it came out.”

Williams is right to questions Richt’s lack of utilizing talent correctly. Christian Robinson seems like a nice kid, but he’s a 3 star guy at best. Same Gilliard and with Chase Vassar. Nothing wrong with that, those guys can make plays too. But Herrera and Ogletree are a step up in terms of physicality and talent, so play them! Just like it was better to play Odell Thurman over Danny Verdun-Wheeler.Nothing wrong with a 3 star if they’re out hustling the 5 stars. But if the hustle is the same, go with the 5 stars.
That being said, if I were Robinson I think I would pull Williams to the side and let him know in no uncertain terms where he could shove those opinions of his.

In regards to the game: It’s all in how you respond to getting punched in the mouth. And by that, I mean getting down by 14 or 21 points. UGA and SC got punched in the mouth and quit. That tells you they are immature and second tier. You punch Bama in the mouth and they might still lose, but they’ll fight back to make it respectable. The Gators were 4-0 last season, then Bama and LSU punched them in the mouth and they fell apart. I think the same thing will happen this year, it just hasn’t happened yet. UGA, FSU, or Bama…one of those teams is going to really punch them in the face, and I don’t think they have the maturity to handle it.

Somebody needs to call out the Oline and Fullbacks as well. UGA needs to establish a running game against the Gators. With the depature of Ben Jones there is no emotional leader on Offense. Merrit is a test bookFB but he shows no emotion and just goes through the blcoks we someone who will come out and take someone head off and lead the way for the running back. Zander is the most instense player on offense and needs to be in the game more to keep the O fired Up especially the O Line. If they don’t come out Fired Up Floridas D will Man Handle them like Carolina and Murray won’t have time to throw. Merrit Hall needs to Youtube William Floyd FSU FB and see how to play the position with Intensity. Cornelious Washingtin need to step it it too on D he is a Big Dude but never makes a play. Chase Vasser is a Sissy and needs to change his image if he plans on making it in Hollywood. He needs to shave that sissyfied hair due off and go with a Brian Bozworth Flat Top and start lighting people up!!! Josh Harvey is a Player and needs to see time at receiver were he could use his height and speed to make Big PLAYS. I’d have Harvey, Brown and Conley line up at WR and see if Florida has enough DB’s to cover the height. Bottom Line is Merrit Hall needs to stop playing like a Mama’s Boy and start laying the Hammer Down!!! Georgia’s running game depends on it.

We need accountability, discipline, true LEADERSHIP from our coaches.. And we aint gettin it. I applaud Williams for calling the defense out in the media. Sometimes thats what it takes.. Great coaches understand this and thats why they call players out publicly on occassion especially at the pro level. Williams is the only one with the balls to lead right now.

First off….thank you S. Williams. Grant ham should have done this weeks ago and started playing freshmen over juniors and seniors just to prove that if you don’t go hard you sit the bench. Guess it only took him a couple seasons to start playing favorites and giving upet classmen a free pass like out last DC.
This weekend will define Richt’s season/career. Can he finally win a big game? If we lose…close game or not…it will show that he cannot even win the SECE yet Alone the SEC! If lose this weekend we are 1-5 vs USC/UF. that’s a bad trend and shows can’t even win our own division with one of the best personnel rosters in the country. I have been a big supporter of Richt over the years but if we lose Saturday, there is nothing left to say other that perhaps a top down attitude adjustment and culture change may benefit this team. CMR promised the players, if you beat the Gators, I promise, to carry you to the Dairy Queen! CMR is a real motivator, and that’s really what’s wrong with this team. No motivation by the head coach! The team has to motivate itself any way it can.

CMR’S stats are way over rated. Just look at the 6 wins CMR has this season, 6 wins over 6 below average teams that have a combined 12-31 record! He can’t win the big game over ranked teams, just pads his record with wins over below average teams, any coach could win 10 games at UGA with the talent the DAWGS have.

Why are the Coaches not initiating this kind of dialogue with the players? They have to agree and chime in when a player steps up? I don’t understand the leadership of the Staff (Coaches).

Seeing how my first post got removed let me repeat: UGA is not playing consistent football, Gators are. Unless the gators gift wrap this UGA loses. UGA has to play a perfect game kind of like the one against Vandy. Hope the Dogs prevail but don’t see it happening. Dogs lose by 14

Now SHAWN wants to quote BIBLE VERSE??? DUDE, U REALLY NEED TO GO BACK AND READ ALL OF PROVERBS…Well SHAWN, I’m sure you WOKE UP A GIANT but I KNOW THE GATORS are taking it ALL IN STRIDE to go after YOUR AZZ!!! I believe the GATORS will CAPITALIZED ON THE TURMOIL WITHIN THE GROUP.. Your head Coach has ROMNESIA, he WON’T answer the questions either. GET HIS PUNKAZZ OBAMACARE, IT MIGHT TOUGHEN HIM UP.. Coach usually thinks such comments on SOCIAL MEDIA are detrimental to the team and MAKE the guys take the comments down IMMEDIATELY. SHAWN, I think you KNEW that ALL OF THE DEFENSE would either respect or IGNORE you putting THEM ON BLASTS/FRONT STREET. How many tackles did you have against Kentucky? If the opposing team is coming UP THE MIDDLE, how does that same player get into the end zone? Did that player ask your permission to pass through? WERE YOU FREAKING SLEEP? Hell, you are just as selfish because you should have made this comment EARLIER in the season or should have MAN UP against THE RACIST LOOKING DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR that is letting the SAME PLAYERS STAY IN THE GAME TOO LONG WITHOUT ROTATING PLAYERS LIKE HE HAS BEEN QUOTED IN THE PAST THAT HE WOULD DO.. GRANTHAM don’t have ROMNESIA, HE IS JOCKING FOR A HEAD COACHING JOB SOMEWHERE WITH HIS PRO-STYLE DEFENSE that HAS BEEN TESTED SINCE HE CAME TO UGA.. Shawn, since you are going into the NFL, I wonder if the NFL COACHES think your comments could possibly LEAD TO CANCER IN THEIR ORGANIZATION??? I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE HOW YOU, JARVIS, ALEC, RAMBO, GILLIARD DO IN THE COMBINE!!! I already know that the “40″ IS GOING TRIP SOME IF NOT ALL UP, THERE GOES YOUR STOCK.. Ask SPIKES, who ran a 5 in the “40.” I’m PRAYING the GATORS TARGET SHAWN & THE REST OF THE SO-CALLED “SOFT” DEFENSE TO A BATTLE IN JACKSONVILLE… I will be in the stadium WATCHING this AZZWHOOPING…MATTER OF FACT, I’m flying out TOMORROW, I WISH I COULD WELCOME ALL U MUTTS INTO TOWN PERSONALLY!!! IN THE WORDS OF JW, THE MEN WILL BE SEPARATED FROM THE BOYS SHAWN… LOSE THE GAME AND SULK BECAUSE HOPES OF COMING TO GA DOME WILL BE TANKED..ATL welcomes the FLORIDA GATORS..

Callin’ out the o-line will not do much good…..this group ain’t up to the tasK. Shows what happens when you recruit skill players so hard that you forget about WHERE THE GAME IS WON!

Gotta coach around this o-line, not call them out like the D got called out. The D can do better; the o-line is about where it can be. We need to concentrate our recruiting there, and ,amazingly, things will get much better. As it stands now, we will have to coach around them with quick-outs and the occasional “drop and fling it.” We will never be able to over power Florida up front, and everbody know it. Coaching will be of the utmost importance. It is still not easy, though, to hide your o-line.

soft, confused, lazy, scared to put their bodies on the line, it’s all true. It’s not new though. We’ve had players shut down when they were projected to go high in the draftfor years. Even Moreno quit giving it 100% his jr season.
There is a culture that is all about Mark Richt. I think this is Richt’s last chance. If we play poorly this saturday, his days are numbered at UGA..as they should be.
We have 4 starters on the OL who will play in The NFL. I’m not sure how that makes the line limited.

Baby butt soft. Our head coach has that I am making $10,000 a day look on the sidelines. Mike Bobo has that fire in his ass and that is about all I see. For all you BOBO haters get off his ass. He is born and breed Ga red. and seldom does his QB’S NOT PLAY VERY WELL. Have never been impressed with his running back coach on the field. Backs are not physical and haven’t been since he has been coaching them. In my opinion he is also baby butt soft. Way to much of a jive guy. Good recruiter not a very good ball coach. I don’t think we have had a Tailback back finish school since he has been the RB Coach. Didn’t he play wideout with BOBO. GO DAWGS

I guess we will see how bad this team wants to win, This game will measure the heart of this program from Richt all the way down to the water boys, A blow out by the Gators and I think Richt can pack his bags as far as the fans are concerned, Even McGarity should start to have doubts about the direction of this team and its leadership.

This was definitely a must win for us, question is…will we revert back to mediocrity or embrace the feeling of imposing our will and hitting people in the mouth?
