UGA safety Shawn Williams rants that Dogs’ defense is ‘too soft, playing wrong players

ATHENS – You figured somebody would say something eventually. Monday night, Georgia strong safety Shawn Williams obliged.

The Bulldogs’ senior and de facto defensive captain ripped into his unit for what he called “soft play” all season. And Williams wasn’t above calling out a few teammates, identifying a couple of linebackers he didn’t think were playing up to snuff.

Do you like that Williams spoke out?

  • Yes. Somebody needed to give a wake up call. (86%, 1,144 Votes)
  • No. He should have kept his complaints in-house. (14%, 189 Votes)

“We’re playing too soft as a defense,” said Williams, talking to reporters after Monday night’s practice. “That goes for the D-line, linebackers, corners, safeties, everybody. We’re just not playing with the same attitude we were last year. I don’t know what it is.”

Asked if he had communicated his frustration to his defensive mates, Williams said he did during the Kentucky game and he plans to again this week as the Bulldogs prepare for Saturday’s game against No. 2 Florida in Jacksonville.

“After the first series [against Kentucky], I told everybody we played too soft,” said Williams, Georgia’s leading tackler with 51 stops. “They got the ball at the 20 and went 80 yards right up the middle. I came to the sideline and said ‘y’all are playing soft.’ It gets frustrating because I’m sitting here and I’m giving all I got and I feel like I’ve got some guys that are not. I feel we’ve got some guys that are in a whole different place.”

Asked what he thought needed to be done, Williams said, “I don’t know. I’m trying to see if I have to take somebody’s helmet off and slap them and say, ‘what’s going on’? We’re not playing with any emotion right now. Period.”

Willliams then got into specifics.

“Personally, if I was the coaches, I can’t tell them what to do, but I’d have Amarlo Herrera in the game more,” Williams said of Georgia’s starting Mike linebacker. “I wouldn’t bring him out. . . . I want to see Amarlo (Herrera) and (Alec) Ogletree in the game at linebacker; I don’t want to see anybody else at linebacker. I feel like they’re two guys that are going to go out and give you all they got, no matter if they mess up or do right. I feel like they’re going to get to the ball and tackle. That’s what we need.”

As it stands, those two are playing the most at Georgia’s inside linebacker positions. Seniors Mike Gillard and Christian Robinson split time with Herrera at the Mike. But Herrera played less against Kentucky than he has in the previous six games. He came in averaging 7.8 tackles per game. Against the Wildcats he had three, tying his season low.

“I just feel like he’s better,” Williams said. “I don’t know what he’s doing that’s better than them, getting off blocks, getting around blocks. He just gets to the football, and that’s what we need, somebody who gets to the football and tackles.”

More than any specific individuals, Williams indicated it was attitude in general that has seen the Bulldogs plunge down the national defensive rankings. Heading into Saturday’s game against run-heavy Florida, Georgia is ranked 47th in total defense (367.43 yards per game), 72nd against the run (167.86) and 49th in scoring (24.14 ppg). They were top 23 in all those categories to end last season. Kentucky rushed for 206 of their 329 total yards in a 29-24 Georgia victory.

“Right now, Florida plays very physical and they’re going to come out and try to just manhandle you,” Williams said. “So I’m really looking forward to seeing what we do. Somebody’s gonna get punched in the mouth. It’s going to be us or them. Whoever gets punched in the mouth is going to have to decide, ‘what do we do now?’ You’re either going to give in or you’re going to fight back. Point blank that’s what we’ve got to do.”

Williams’ teammates – at least those available after Monday night’s late-finishing practice — concurred with his assessment.

“I understand where he’s coming from,” senior free safety Bacarri Rambo said. “He wants to win and he wants to be the best in whatever he does. I’m in the same boat with him. I see him as a leader and a captain of the defense. He just wants what’s best for the team and the defense. So if he feels like that I feel the same way. . . . That’s what we’re upset about, because we’re not playing the best we can play, not to the potential we have as a defense.”

Said Malcolm Mitchell, who played nearly half the season at cornerback before switching back to defense full time: “Yeah, we’ve got to amp it up. We’ve got to play harder.”

Williams was asked if he thought some players were worried too much about NFL and complacent because they’ve already proven themselves. Williams is among four Georgia starters that have been projected as first-round draft picks.

“I don’t know if it’s the NFL or worried about messing up or worried about a game down the road,” Williams said. “We’ve just got to do what we do and play physical football. And we’re not. That’s what you’ve got to do to win.”

NOTES . . .

Junior outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who was nominated as a Butkus Award semifinalist on Monday, was not listed on Monday’s injury report. Generally that means he was able to practice without limitations. The 2011 All-American was unable to play against Kentucky due to right ankle sprain. Neither Jones nor any coaches were available to comment after practice… . Starting defensive end Abry Jones was listed on the practice report as “out.” He left the Kentucky game on the second defensive play with a left ankle injury… . Quarterback Aaron Murray was named the SEC’s offensive player of the week Monday for his 427-yard, four-touchdown passing performance against Kentucky. Murray was also tabbed a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award for the nation’s best quarterback on Monday.

Agree with Shawn Williams, the one player that ALWAYS brings it & hits hard.

However, the D needs to avoid those costly 15-yard personal fouls like we got in Lexington and tend to get vs. the Gators when they encourage us to do so.

Imo, it comes from the top. I know they say that Richt’s calm demeanor is good for the team but I think this team with all its talent n experience doesn’t need babying. It needs stern, disciplined coaching and if that means getting in someone’s face or snatching em off the field when they’ve committed a stupid penalty or missed assignment. Too many times there’s a mistake made and the cameras shift to the sideline and there’s a shot of Richt just standing there like an old man playing checkers on a Sunday afternoon. I’ll admit that the defense wasn’t “elite” last season, as some have said they were, but they were very good. Last year, the guys swarmed to the ball and played as well as they could considering the players they had. This year, they are blowing assignments and often seem like they don’t care. If you want to see the difference look at how we held Michigan State’s leading rusher to under 50 yards or that the defense played lights out against Kentucky in last year’s game. This year, going up against Kentucky’s backup quarterback, they were terrible and we gave up way more rushing yards than we did against even the good teams like Boise and MSU last season. The guys need to get it together now or they will not only lose to Florida, but lose by 20+

Williams is only stating what has been the obvious all season long! Why does Richt continue to recruit players who have their focus on the NFL?? Why not recruit players who want to play at college and play as a team? Kansas State seems to be doing all right with those kind of players. It is horrible being a UGA alum and fan now. Erk would have never allowed any player to quit!! Where are the coaches?? Why are they allowing such a selfish/thug mentality? Coaches must demand respect and it appears that players certainly have no respect for the UGA coaches.

Then you have to ask yourself, with knowing this, what kind of recruits would come here despite this, is it the kind of recruit who would rather have his coach sing happy birthday to him, than push him to his limits on the field?

Sad that a player has to speak up and say what the coaches should be saying, whether it be via the press or in private, these words needed to be spoken. Seems as though there is dissension amongst the troops. As far as I’m concerned, Shawn Williams could coach out the season for us. At least we’d see a little fire on the sidelines. Herrera may be our best player on defence, or most consistant, and he needs to be in the game from start to finish. I truly believe we have severe chemistry problems on this team and the coaches can’t seem to overcome it. Hopefully, a team mates comments lights a fire under this tearms arse.

Can’t say I disagree with Williams, however he was guilty of a completely unnecessary 15 yard penalty that, along with this outburst, is indicative of the lack of team discipline that is responsible for the lack of results in big games we have seen over the last 6 years. And really the let downs we have seen throughout Richt’s tenure. Mark Richt is a good human being, but those people don’t win national championships. People like Spurrier, Saban and Meyer do. You’ve got to have no scruples or compasion and care about nothing but winning. That’s what it takes in modern college football. Take your choice UGA fans and live with it…

There was a play that I watched in the Florida vs. South Carolina game on Saturday that explains what WIlliams is saying. A SC player was running towards the sidelines and started to let up to see what the oncoming Florida player, Jon Bostic, would do. What he did was not let up but to lower the boom on the player that was not going 100 percent……and as Bostic hit him hard…..Matt Elam came on and plowed into him and almost knocked Bostic over. That was two players that were playing all out and no concern for their own well being. And the SC player did not make a play the rest of the game. During the game, the SC offensive players simply looked scared and confused because of how hard they were being hit and by the enormous power, stength, and speed they saw on every single play….with out letup. And do you know why……because the head coach of Florida was standing on the sideline making sure every player was doing just that….and so were all of his assistant coaches. The Florida players have definitely taken on the personality of their coach…and are following his directives on how to play the game. On the other side, I do think Georgia has taken on the personality of their head coach, which is too laid back and non emotional during games. And I think Grantham has also taken a step back under Richt’s directive on the sideline. I am not sure that is good because Georgia sure played with a lot more emotion and desire last year. As a Gator fan, I hope that continues for one more week. But I think Georgia players will come out with a lot more emotion for this game. But, frankly, I think the Florida players are stronger, better conditioned, and faster…..on the defensive side of the ball. Georgia has the advantange on the other side of the ball in key skill areas. And I think that will make the game close for most of the game. But I think Florida will have more to offer in the fourth quarter….if the game is still close one way or the other.

I agree with several of those who have posted tonight. I’m glad Williams is still passionate about the team and how the defense performs. Someone needs to be. Also, his personal foul penalty was uncalled for in the game. But at least he cares about what’s going on, can that be said about a lot of the other guys? Not really. Where is John Jenkins lately? He was a force the second half of last season. I don’t think Robinson or Gillard should be playing much either, but maybe they are better than Herrera is pass coverage or in certain situations. I do know that Ogletree is a beast at linebacker and Herrera is solid against the run.

A head coach doesn’t do much coaching. Assistants handle that. What a head coach does is set the tone. He doesn’t have to be a hard ass. There is more than one way to skin a cat. He can also be a guy that exudes excitement and intensity. I think that is model that Richt aspires to. However, he just doesn’t have it in him.

Florida has a very good defense, especially their linebackers and safety Elam. But offensively I think they are a little overrated. Do you know how many rushing yards Gillislee had against South Carolina? 39. Total yards for Florida- under 200 of total offense. They forced turnovers and got short fields and this made their job easier, but don’t confuse their offense with Alabama or Oregon. They forced a fumble inside the 5 and a fumble on a kickoff return. Granted, they did a good job to force the turnovers and not settle for field goals, but that’s no explosive showing.

If Georgia gets hammered this weekend, I am done with Richt as a head coach. I think he is a decent coach, but a lousy motivator and doesn’t see the big picture sometimes. (For example, waiting so long to fire Martinez.) Martinez should have been fired without a doubt after 2008, but he waited another year until they were so bad it could cost him his own job.

UGA D can stop the Gators O if they go out and play. If I were CTG I would stack the box and play man to man. UF doesn’t have explosive receivers. It would also get the Dawgs playing aggressively. Their zone is soft and has the players thinking too much. For the life of me I can’t understand why CTG hasn’t been more aggressive in his scheme. The 3-4 is supposed to be an aggressive D. The Dawgs have to quit playing not to lose and play to win. If UF smokes them on deep routes, so be it. At least we go out swinging.

Tampa Gator,
I love the way the coaches at fl are coaching. It is unreal.I watched Muschamp get onto one of his players in the beginning of the SC game for a penalty. He basically jacked the player up and got into his face. Now that is football!! Hell I seen our local high school coach get into the players face. That;s football. Physical, emotion, passion, discipline. Man I could be a coach.lol
Florida coaches are getting after it this season. It is paying off. I don’t even see any the assistants for the dawgs doing anything but collecting a check. THAT IS THE TRUTH. bobo is up in the booth with a big fat dip in his mouth. CMR has got his hand on the mic of his ear set, doing nothing. DEAD HEAD.WE NEED SOMEONE TO LIGHT THESE PLAYERS ON FIRE. I agree 100% with what you say. I was there when ERK was, a player quit we would never see him on the field again. Those guys would have run through a brick wall for coach Russell, because they did not fear him, but had respect for him. I do think Richt did a VERY BAD thing by toning down Grantham all because some lady heard him cussing on the sidelines. We need fire and brimstone when they screw on those helments and go to battle. If you are afraid to get hurt as it may affect your “DRAFT” status, you have no loyalty to the team or team concept……our time, our team, no regrets…..hmmm was it just a saying, or did it mean something in your heart?

Here are more important stats from that game.

Time of possession. Florida 35 minutes. SC 24 minutes.
3rd down conversions. Florida 7/16 SC 3/14

One thing to remember for Saturday……Florida does not try to win games with its offense. They do not lose it with their offense. But they use their offense and special teams to establish field position and contol the tempo of the game. What Florida tries to do is win the game with an overpowering defense…..ask Texas A&M, Tennessee, LSU, and South Carolina.

Shawn has laid it out. If the team is soft whose fault is it and isn’t this a perpetual problem? If they are not playing the right players (this is something players know well) whose fault is it. Tough coaches begat tough players. Years ago UGA had an abundance of both.

I think that Grantham has had to tone it down because it conflicted with Richt’s philosophy of not demonstrating any emotions on the sideline. Maybe Grantham, who at least tries to show some cajones sometimes , should be promoted to head coach, and ,if we retain Richt, keep him as the offensive coordinator, move BooBoo back to quarterbacks coach. In other words, let’s shuffle the deck a little bit and maybe, just maybe we’ll attain some level of success beyond a ten win season. I’m real damn tired of watching other teams in the SEC do a whole lot more with less, we have squandered so much talent at UGA , it’s really just sickening. THere is NO excuse for us not to be playing for the National Championship this year.

It shouldn’t be Williams calling the slow, soft defense out, it should be Grantham. I think it was Williams who let receivers from South Carolina or Tennessee get behind him and score of long passes. But , the reason was because he was more interested in doing someones else job than what he was suppose to do . Williams missed his assignments because other players were not doing their job. Commings is not swarming to the ball like he should and swain would be a lot more effective if he would have more discipline and play like he has a plan instead of wide open in reckless abandon.
Richt needs to take the muzzle off Grantham and let Grantham’s passion show through if Richt won’t do it himself. It is obvious Grantham was call out by Richt and Grantham said for $850,000 I will stand over on the side line and be just as stoic as Richt you are the boss.
I would like to remind Richt that I know he doesn’t want anyone hurt so he doesn’t want any hard hitting but if and when any of the Defensive players get to the NFL they won’t even be given a tryout if they are playing the way they all are right now at Georgia and I don’t want to see a totally different person when they play Pro ball because we all will know that Georgia could have had him playing like a wild man if Richt was not such a wimp with NO PASSION FOR FOOTBALL.

Disagree South Carolina Dawg with the “player focus on the NFL comment”. Bama, FL, SC, LSU, TN, ect. recruit the same high profile, elite and future NFL athletes every year. The difference being how the other programs seem to able to keep the blinders on their NFL bound players by reminding all of them that their play on every snap is evaluated by NFL scouts. Start taking downs off and dialing back your effort then be assured of your draft stock and signing bonus dropping like a stream-lined man whole cover. Second comment concerning the apparent inability of the UGA coaching staff to deal properly with this team issue is spot on by my estimation.

Good Job Mr. Shawn Williams,

You may have just become the leader of Georgia’s football team. Rally the troops and get the eleven who are going to put a helmet to somebody on Saturday on every play. This is the kind of passion and stepping up that it takes for a team to win championships. Murray and the o-line need to do the same thing on the offense and open some darn holes for our running backs. Simple game plan: 3 and outs on defense + blocking on offense with zero turnovers = Win for Georgia.

Game Crocks fumble inside their five yard line on their very 1st series and go down hill from there. A very physical game against LSU the week before took a big toll on them. Shaw had a poor game – missed several open receivers. Game Crocks had a wide open receiver in the end zone on their 2nd possession and missed him. It should have been 7 – 7 at that point with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter. Shaw seemed to lose confidence and Spurrier was constantly on him on the side line. Without an injured Lattimore S.C. gave up on the running game. Clowney was in position 3 or 4 times to make a stop in the back field but whiffed on the tackle. Florida’s punter was the star of the game. Averaged close to 50 yards a punt with little to no return.

This speaks volumes about the state of UGA football. When a player has to rally the troops? Holy guacamole, the coaches make huge amounts and a player has to be the one to call out the reality? UGA might win because of this stunt, but if they lose, CMR is that much closer to being out the door. And I can’t say I’d be disappointed…Either way, it puts a microscope on the coaching mentality. We’ve been saying something “ain’t right” for years now. Maybe, just maybe (and mercifully) our AD might just have the ammo to make a change. It’s gonna happen anyway…CMR won’t win 6 or 7 games next year.

I dont holdout much hope for a different result this time…..probably something to the tune of 38-16. We talk a great game during the week with were going to do this and were going to change that…BS coach! crowd noise is the least of this teams problems…..it starts with coaching.

Long overdue! Our defense has been playing half-assed all season. Why haven’t the caoches said anything? It’s just not in MR to get on anybody, and that really hurts the team! Rambo has been terrible since his return, and the Defensive Ends have been pitiful. They’re too concerned about their NFL prospects, and in turn are hurting their draft position with their terrible efforts and play. Maybe Williams speaking out will help- I hope so. As it stands, I think Florida will kick sand in our faces.

It’s a must win game. Calling out his own guys and stirring the soup is good for this team. Too many times we have seen future NFL defensive ProBowlers roll through this town quietly on their way to the big payday, leaving in their wake lackluster collegiate win-loss records. Good for Shawn to light an SEC Championship fire underneath these all-too-comfy Bulldogs.

Well, that was refreshing. A player not being muzzled by the coaching staff. Yes, what he said is obvious but coming from a player it is particularly indicting. It could be said that the coaching staff relies too heavily on player leadership that, in preferring that players do the policing, they are somehow abdicating their responsibility. In some cases it works and in others it does not. Coach Grantham must be being muzzled because he doesn’t seem like a guy to mince words. I sure hope this gets some action from the players because I really think they should be aware that they are playing for their coaches jobs on Saturday. No regrets? How about the millstone of knowing that you, because of a lack of effort, cost a family man his job in this economy? Forget championships and crap like that… this is consequential stuff. Your best is all that is ever asked of you. A coach can not play for you… they can punish you but that can’t MAKE you play hard. UGA players it is solely on YOU to give everything you’ve got. Leave it on the field or spend the rest of your lives why you didn’t. Pretty simple isn’t it?

The buck stops here…

CMR should do a “blank out” in Jacksonville in response to a lethargic performance by the Dawgs at crunch time this season and I don’t give a flip if they did win last week…..

The GD coaches from CMR on down need to hear and take heed to my “thousand yard speech…”

What got you here, will not get you there, and until the GD sorry, lazy coaches who I will refer to as “couches” (until I see some potential and bite) can KMA.

Take the names off the jerseys, take the G off the helmets and scrape the GD helmet stickers for starts off immediately!!!!

Statesborodawg, evaluations of talent are one thing… evaluations of heart are quite another. I don’t know if Coach Grantham is hung up on the talent he sees or if there is something else that makes him keep these guys in the game. Personally I’d open competition for playing time every week until someone shows that they have the desire to play along with their talent. Great physical ability often has a downside of lack of self initiative. It is because things come too easily for the mega talented. Rennie Curran played with everything he had even though he was under sized and probably didn’t have the physical tools other guys had. We need a bunch of guys like that right now. It is on the coaching staff to evaluate such things and do what has to be done. I’m not sure what is wrong but if we lose to UF then a change has to be made. The mulligans have been used up.

Props to Mr. Williams for taking it upon himself to try to fire up his teammates. His coaches apparently are not doing that. In football, there’s really nothing worse than telling a defense they’re “playing fine,” or that “we just need to clean a few things up.” Perhaps Grantham should take some of the energy he usually wastes on opposing teams’ coaches and kickers, and use it on his own boys. They need a swift kick in the pants. They have played like privileged spectators all season and it’s a sickening waste of talent.

“Asked what he thought needed to be done, Williams said, “I don’t know. I’m trying to see if I have to take somebody’s helmet off and slap them and say, ‘what’s going on’? We’re not playing with any emotion right now. Period.”

Now that is what I’m talking about. It’s too bad that the players have to hype motivate themselves. And then there is this:
““I wouldn’t bring him out. . .

Now, did I not say that at the beginning of the season? But I was called an idiot. Herrera would be starting right now if this was Alabama or Florida. C. Robinson is and always has been a back up. He is a good leader but he is a back up. So is Chase Vasser. Move Ray Drew back to OLB. Put some more athleticism, speed, and aggression on the field, not players you think you owe a favor to.

Funny, our players are considered talented in high school – stars galore. Yet gobs of them go to the NFL every year – some even a year early. How many this next draft, 4 first rounders on the D alone, so maybe 7 or so total?

But somehow in between high school and the NFL, while they are at UGA, it’s those same players’ fault we lost (usually ugly) everytime to equally talented teams, and could only beat the less-talented teams. Our players just don’t seem to “execute” in the big games.

Hopefully with Jarvis Jones practicing at 100% with no jersey, he will give this team some confidence. I have to say for most of you that never played football at a level any higher than pee wee, but sometimes it takes a player like Williams, who the defense and team respects, to kick their butts and open their eyes moreso than the coach.
I’m not saying that the coaches don’t need to be equally verbal if not more so, but when one of their own states the obvious… Just saying, I’m still not convinced that we will see this huge turn around Saturday. It’s not like you can flip the on switch on.
For me, Jarvis needs to smack several of the defensive players around. Do some one on one drills and let him wake them up. Man, the players are there to have a great defense, but the players have to find the heartand drive to get after it!

Shawn, the team delivering the punch in the mouth on Saturday will be Florida. Last year if Richt hadn’t thought outside his own box we wouldn’t have beaten Florida,we would have gotten beat. Richt said. “They had third down situations where they ran the ball into what would be considered more of a pass stopping type of a defense, more two safety looks. At that point, you’ve just got to defeat a block and make a play. We didn’t do a good job of doing that.”

So for all you armchair fans who only see CMR on TV, he does “call out” the team every now and then. The HC shouldn’t be name-calling in public anyway. Fine for Williams and other players. I just hope it works.

This is a great opportunity. After we beat the Gators we’ll have the East in our pockets. It CAN be done.

Go Dawgs! GATA!

Finally a player from UGA steps up and saythe truth. At first Idid not like S. Williams when he was at saftey two years ago, but last year I saw a player that have grown. I thought he was a twiner LB/ S I thought he was to big hit prown. Now he is the consistant in the secondary. Those word was meant for Rambo, Tree, Jones, J. Jenkins all players are slated to being drafted this year and he right they are thinking about the draft. Good for you shawn. By the way, what happen to that five star DB B. I see Williams’ point about being strong up the middle. It was wierd seeing so many 3rd down conversions on draw runs up the gut.

My guess is Herrera and Ogletree are getting the reps in practice, so Williams felt comfortable reinforcing that.

To beat Florida, you have to force the runs inside. Geathers and Jenkins, Herrerra and Ogletree, I’ll take that matchup.

But the only time we looked bad up the middle is when they ran in long 3rd and long passing situations when we didn’t expect it. Still, needs to be fixed, and it will be.

“I think Georgia would be better with a 4-2-5 defensive lineup with their current personnel. Just my opinion.”

Slydog…i said that last week, and almost got neutered for suggesting it. Dline cant stop anyone in their 3 man front…no pressure coming from the outside. Solve it by running four big boys across the front by filling the box, with speed and tackling ablility at linebacker. Man on outside, cover 2 with the safeties, since both Commings and Rambo are rangy and athletic. Let Williams roam all over the field (star position) depending on UF’s schemes. Since Jarvis is having a hard time reaching the QB from the outside position…try it from the inside.

DLine – G. Smith, J. Jenkins, K. Geathers, C. Washington (give Drew some PT)
LB – Tree and Jones (sub with Herrera)
DB – Swann, Smith, Commings, Rambo, with Williams (star position)

The fan base has gone from polarized to overwhelmingly against him. The D is just 1.89 points behind the 2011 defense.

The 2012 defense is giving up 24 points per game.
The 2011 defense gave up 22.1 points per game.

The D is better in 2nd half, and 4th quarter scoring than the 2011 defense (both are top 15 nationally).

I don’t care about any other defensive stats rushing, sacks, tackles for loss, etc.

Focus on scoring. Keep Florida out of the end zone, make them kick field goals.

From a scoring standpoint, the D is pretty much the same as 2011.

Florida’s offense isn’t exactly great:
54th in scoring, 108th in total yards

20 points is the magic number. Hold Florida to 20 points, like 2011, and you win. Let them score 30 points or more, and you lose.

Takes special teams defense or just punt/kick away from returners, offense not turning the ball over and leaving short fields and staying committed to balance, defense forcing turnovers and eliminating QB runs and forcing runs inside.

If our special teams doesn’t give up big plays, if the offense protects the ball, I’ll trust this team to win the game late like they did in 2011.

Chris, yes I think so. McGarity gave CMR a pass last year because there was improvement. That can not be said if we lose to UF Saturday. Lose Saturday and this season is a disappointment at best. Something is broken and all the corrections haven’t changed too much of anything. Lose Saturday and it is glaringly obvious that a regime change is needed. McGarity is not a joke people. He canned the gymnastics coach for not producing championships. Perno is gone if he doesn’t show improvement next year. Fox needs a big step forward too. Don’t think that McGarity was making contingency plans when we opened 0-2 last year. Lose to UF and CMR is gone.

All this handwringing and espousing conspiratorial theories of NFL pipe dreams seems pointless. The only point from this perspective is the defense stinks (other words apply here). KY looked like they were lubed with KY Jelly against a lacadaisical who gives a F bunch of sluggos. As to the why’s and how’s I personally don’t care. Either fix it or shut the F up. They say we have the parts, but they must have come from China because the play cheap and break easily. FL is gonna kick our butts and leave a cloud of flea and hair filled dust in their wake and perhaps then it will be time for the folks in the sky boxes to begin to contemplate the future of the entire coaching staff. Personally I enjoy the sideline antics of FL’s coach and Spurrier and Saben and deplore the total Tom Landry stoicism of Richt. It’s tired, it’s boring and worst it ain’t working.

If you lose this game badly, recruiting in Florida is done for the next two years, as it was in South Carolina, let’s be honest. I mean to me, this is maybe Richt’s biggest game of his career. This Florida team may be headed for a NC. If we can win, would we be backing into the SECC , absolutely not! If we get dominated, the season is lost, the downward spiral continues, the coaches start sitting in hot chairs, coaches know this. These coaches are making plenty of money and public scrutiny should be warranted when necessary! It is time to say shame on you Coach Richt and shame on you DC Todd Grantham for not earning your pay! We are not asking too much to want to see improvement throughout the year! We have seen digretion!! We are quite frankly and embarrasement in the SEC! If the defense isn’t playing up to par, the fault lies with Grantham! That’s what he’s paid to do….COACH! If he’s not coaching as he should, it’s CMR’s job to call him down on that! That’s what Nick Sabin does and does well. That’s why he’s a winner! Plain and simple, better coaching needs to take place at UGA! The talent is there and there is no reason the chickens should have beaten the DAWGS so badly……beaten perhaps, but not slaughtered! Further, McGarrity is no doubt watching and should take steps to fix this. If the defense is playing soft, then evidently, the coaching is coaching soft as well. It is ludicrous that a player such as Williams has to be the one to call out the team for playing soft! Hello coaches, where the hell are you???

Of ALL people, it takes the two guys that I could do without on the team. All Williams ever does is run his mouth and jump around for no reason. On every passing play, he always gets beat. Then you have Rambo….The guy who has done nothing this season but hurt the Dawgs. Suspended the first four games…Comes out and gets beat on nearly every play. 2 VERY easy interceptions that he flat out misses and allows the SC receiver to get and eventually score. Then you have Mitchell who has probably the worst attitude of the bunch.

Please tell me yall saw when he threw a fit because he “wasn’t allowed” to return the kick off Saturday night. This kid is a “me first” player. It is so frustrating.

I don’t think most of you understand how a team functions, the positional coaches are solely responsible for having their players ready (mind & body) on Saturday afternoons.

This is not getting done and now you have players now finger pointing at different parts of the team instead of taking care of each other as a whole.

UGA has lost its ‘team concept” and that is sure sign of ineffective coaching by UGA’s couch coaches…. They know it and so do I…

Move some F players around, bench the ones not ready and fine the position coaches which are slacking off!

Look at Louisville ( sad we have too) Charlie Strong has his team ready every Saturday and is undefeated against the same quality teams (or better teams) in every game played this year in winning every close game.

That is coaching, and coaching done right!

Pull the names from the jerseys, take the G off the helmets along with the stickers plain red and silver shirts for the coaching staff until this bunch re-learns or learns for the first time its a team….

Calling out a player for not doing his job may be viewed as over the line to some people in this Pepsi generation, but this is often the best thing to do, because if ur the one being called out, you will do one of two things… Either sulk up and feel sorry for yourself or get pissed off and play to the level you were brought there to do.

Guarantee that because of this prayer meeting, as we used to call it, this will spark the dogs to play with a high level of intensity this week, because there is no stronger pressure in the world than peer pressure.

Great job Shawn! Go Dawgs!

I’m glad Shawn stepped up and called out the defense and a couple of specific players. My ten year old saw as much on Sat, saying it was like the defensive players were playing not to get hurt.

I get some of the players trying to protect their interest, and maybe seeing Jarvis dealing with injury has a few of them who are 1st or 2nd round picks spooked, but if that’s the case then go to the coaches and say as much. Then sit down and let some of our talented young HUNGRY players come in and play. I’d much rather see a freshman who’s talented and hungry, than an experienced Jr or Sr playing not to get hurt.

Also memo to Coach Richt, Let Grantham be Grantham. He’s a high energy guy, he snorts, yells, curses and doesn’t tolerate mediocrcy. He can’t coach like you. Calm and cool is what you want in an O-Coordinator, fiery and passionate is what you want in a D-Coordinator. I’ve seen Richt to many times go over to Grantham and give him the “calm down” talk and body language. I get he’s a Christian and doesn’t subscribe to the cursing, but really put the headphones on, walk to the other side of the sideline and let the man do what HE knows to do to motivate his players.

Hopefully Shawn has called a players only meeting and wil have the d-guys head on straight. If Murray and Co. give the defense 21 pts, and no turnovers, then the it’s on the Defense if we lose on Sat. I have to say I feel a little better IF the players respond to Shawn.

Thanks for having the courage and the stones to say what we’ve all been thinking!!

Williams is probably tired of having to tackle RBs running at full speed when they get to him, having been untouched going through the line and LBs.

I think the NFL-bound players are coasting and you can’t really blame them. It takes a lot to get big-time athletes to buy into the “team” thing when they are just months from getting $ millions. Richt apparently can’t do it.

We’ve seen it before – Stafford and Knowshon were ready for draft day after that loss to Bama.

Look at the 2007 season. On October 6 they were beaten by TN 35-14. If anyone remembers they showed up and played just like they did on Oct 6th this year. The next week they played Vandy and needed a fumble by Vandy to barely win the game on a field goal 20-17. After that they beat every team they played and put 40 points on most of them. The only close game was KY 24-13. KY has always been a team that has played UGA tough. This year was no different.

It’s been 5 years. The point was that people are saying we are going to lose Saturday because of the way they played on Oct 6 and the way they played last Saturday. That is not true. The difference in 2007 and this year is that the talent level is better than it was in 2007. The talent level at UF is not. I believe you will see the UGA team that we thought we would see all year on Saturday. When a team has a second chance when they thought their chances were done it usually has a high motivation factor of it’s own.

As I said before, it’s embarrassing that a player had to call out his team instead of $5 million worth of coaching staff. Can’t CMR see the forest for the trees? The fan base has gone from polarized to overwhelmingly against him. He’s not even rearranging the chairs on the Titantic; he’s at the helm, in neutral thinking it’s a nice brisk night for a swim (or to be 6-1). I guess I shouldn’t be surprised though. It’s time to put up or shut up, Richt. I’m still not convinced Muschamp is the greatest coach out there, but he is an incredible motivator. His guys always seem to play hard. Richt does not motivate his players the way he should and I hate that. Grantham had them playing with a ton of emotion last season and it showed. Even though they weren’t “dominant” last season, they played very hard and they almost always played solid run defense. And while they didn’t “shut down” the better teams, they weren’t bad at all. This year they are bad against even the weaker teams. Rambo needs to play harder in my opinion.

WOW! It’s about time somebody showed growth and development and that’s what captains and team leaders are for, if coaches will not make adjustments. The D Line in general is very overrated or under developed. They have not put any pressure on the quarterback all year and dance at the line of scrimmage. If the D-line can change the line of scrimmage, we will see the defense play much better but if they can’t don’t expect much change. The D-line must play extremely better!

You people talking about the talent level at Florida have no idea what you’re talking about. The Gators had at least two number one national recruiting classes after their 2008 NC. At least eight of their 1s on defense will play on Sunday. Driskel will probably be a Heisman candidate in his junior or senior year, and their tight end and two of the O linemen will play on Sundays.

How was Muschamp able to turn things around in less than two years? The same reason Meyer was: The cupboard was fully stocked when he arrived. They just needed strength and conditioning, cultural buy-in, and a year to learn the new defensive scheme.

Team just “quit” on Richt fairly early in the 08 game. Meyer coached a masterpiece that day, he played conservative early and let Richt and Bobo beat themselves. Reality, the results have been solid this year, especially at the end of games. I’m just not sold on Muschamp just yet as an elite coach. He not only lost to Georgia last year (with a terrible quarterback and offensive line), but the major concern is penalties. Florida certainly looks like a better team than Georgia but in a neutral site, I have a hard time believing they could stay within two touchdowns of Alabama. The Tide don’t make careless penalties and personal foul penalties that are unnecessary.

I hope Georgia wins this game, because if so they will be so fired up that they will likely roll over Auburn and Ole Miss (Or at least win). Unfortunately, I’m not sure Georgia has the coaching or offensive line to pull off the upset.
I have a news flash for you guys. Richt is not a national championship coach. He is not terrible and I would certainly take him over a guy like Gene Chizik, but he’s not going to lead us to where a lot of our fans want the team to go. Does that mean he should be fired? It depends on what you as fans want. If you want to beat Georgia Tech almost every year and always make a bowl game and be pretty good, but lose most of your games to the better teams but still win 9 games most seasons, then support him. But if you want teams that will be relevant almost every year in terms of the top 10 and national championship contention, he is not your guy. I love the guy as a person, but not as a head coach. I had a friend who met him and spent a short time with him. My friend said he was a great man who was just like my friend’s father, someone who you felt would be there for you. But my friend said he could imagine a player coming into Richt’s office and putting his feet on his desk and after skipping a class or misbehaving, Richt would probably say something like “You can’t do this, son. I want you to learn from this. But I still love you.” My friend felt that Richt would rarely chew a guy out even if the guy deserved it. I think this is the problem with Richt and guys getting suspended. The guys don’t see the consequences of their actions because they know Richt won’t put fear into them or be too hard on them. I’ll admit he has gotten better than at the beginning of his tenure at giving guys suspensions instead of just slapping them on the wrist. But the number of arrests speak for themselves.

Yes, Florida should win the game. They have a much better defense statistically, and a ground game that Ga lacks. Plus, GA has CMR. So on paper, it’s a mismatch.

I would not say too much, from an Ohio State fan. Buckeyes cannot even go to any bowl at all, because of the stupid behavior of players and Tressel in the tattoo-gate scandal… Georgia pretty shaky this year, but at least they can go to a decent bowl game ( and probably lose).

smitty, I haven’t been that impressed with UF’s offense yet. Their defense is playing great but their offense is average. Driskell hasn’t proven yet that he can be a consistent passer. He runs a lot like Conner Shaw. I think UGA loads the line and makes him prove he can pass on them.

Sadly, Alec Ogletree is a problem in my eyes. Him and Rambo are full of blown coverages and personal foul penalties. Georgia’s defense has taken steps backwards since those two came back into the picture. Pretty good individual talents, but they don’t help the unit as a whole.

Driskel will be a much better passer eventually, but right now he is mostly a runner. He has not thrown the ball very well the last few games. Gillislee also failed to crack 40 yards rushing on South Carolina on 19 carries. So if we get penetration, their offense is not explosive. Florida’s receivers are average and have been average ever since Cooper and Hernandez went to the NFL after the 2009 season. Their tight end is excellent, but their receivers are solid, so I think Grantham should be aggressive and force Florida receivers to beat our guys deep because of their lack of talent at the receiver position. Reed will make some plays against anybody, but not their receivers. The Florida defense is loaded, so in order for Georgia to win, they are going to have to limit Florida offense, because that defense is not going to give that many points. I doubt we can win if we give up more than 21.

Reality, in big games, with two equally talented teams, my experience has been that both coaches start conservatively on offense, not wanting to make a mistake early. Once the players get into the rythym of the game they begin to open things up a bit more. That’s the smart play, let your opponent shoot themselves first if they will. That’s what Meyer did to us in 08.

You can’t fix soft in 5 days but you can fix effort. I don’t think soft is being used to denote weakness… it is being used to describe lack of effort. All it takes is a couple of guys not giving their all to effect a defense. If you have 1 lineman, 1 LB, and 1 DB not giving an honest effort then good teams stick it to you and the effort of the the other 8 guys is useless. I think some guys are playing to be heroes as well… they leave their assignments and are getting burned. Getting gapped is what Coach Richt calls it. So we need guys to play their assignments with everything they’ve got and not worry about their stats as well.

Every year, Georgia (just like South Carolina) lays an egg in a game they should win. I mean by that they come out flat and unprepared. Sometimes it’s against a bad team and they still manage to win because of superior talent (Kentucky last year being a good example). Sometimes it’s against a great team (Alabama in 2009). I like Richt, but I don’t think he can win a national championship or even an SEC championship as long as Saban and Miles are both coaching in the SEC West.

Here are some examples to support me:

2002: Georgia loses to a Florida team they should have beaten due to an inability to play better on offense and convert third downs. Georgia still managed to win the SEC East thanks to David Greene’s good passing in the second half against Auburn.
2004: Georgia is coming off a big win over LSU and looks like one of the top teams in the country. ESPN is praising UGA for their win and the team is full of seniors. Despite having a great quarterback in David Greene who played pretty well in big games, a good running back in Thomas Brown, good receivers and offensive line and a solid defense, UGA commits over 100 yards in penalties and narrowly loses to a Tennessee team they should have beaten.
2005: After winning against a good LSU team to take the SEC title, Georgia came out sloppy on offense and turned the ball over. West Virginia got a huge lead on us and while we played great after falling behind, we came up just short of winning because we didn’t have enough time to get the ball back.
2006: Layed an egg against Kentucky and Vanderbilt and lost both game.
2007: We lost badly at Tennessee after falling behind big in the first half, then beat a Florida team that had destroyed that Vols team.

There are many games I could point out to. This is a coaching problem and the fact that it happens every year should show people that.

I totally agree, why did Richt agree to hire Grantham knowing he was a very emotional Coach and openly showed it on the field if he was going to then muzzle him. Despite the fact that he has a National Championship and has made SC better than they ever have been? I’m just wondering if you should have left that part out of your post because it detracts from an otherwise good analysis.
Of course, it is the truth but some people will beat you up over it…LOL. Teams do it all the time. How about Utah tearing Saban a new one a couple of years back in their bowl game? No one can tell me Utah had more talent to work with. Even well coached teams have a let down or read their press too much. The issue is how often and what actually happens.
A loss to UF on Saturday pretty much adds the exclamation point to the trend for UGA. A win can go a long way to undoing that perception. That’s why I’ve been saying for 2 weeks now that the Dawgs MUST beat UF for CMR to keep his job. The trend is there. The question is whether this team can show an exception to that slide. We will see… that’s all I can say. No predictions out of this Dawg.

Shawn Williams, I appreciate you addressing that there is a FLAW in the DEFENSE.. Now say what you really want to say. IT’S THE DEFENSIVE PSYCHO-PATH–WANT TO BE IN CHARGE OF HEAD COACH POSITION COORDINATOR that determines who plays, when, and how long. HE is also the ONE showing favoritism by playing ALL THESE SO-CALLED TRUE FRESHMEN that still need the time to develop MENTALLY IN THE POSITION. STANDUP TO THAT GUY THAT BELIEVES HOLLERING & CURSING WILL GET THINGS DONE THE WAY HE WANTS THEM ON DEFENSE.. HE is the one that is allowing PLAYMAKERS to sit on the bench weakening their spirits of playing for UGA by not giving them opportunities to show that they can compete on a certain level. Shawn, I don’t recall U NOR RAMBO doing SO GREAT!!! When the opposing receiver get behinds U and RAMBO at THE SAME DAMN TIME, U BOTH LOOK STUPID!!! Rambo, I understand that you agree with Shawn. However, YOU ARE PLAYING JUST AS LACKADAISICAL AS ANYONE ON THE TEAM. Every game prior to you coming back WE had to hear about UGA can’t wait to get the SUSPENDED GUYS BACK. Since when do we ANTICIPATE HOW GREAT THINGS WILL GO WHEN KNUCKLEHEADS got into MISCHIEF that they KNEW could cause a DISTRACTION TO THE TEAM AS A WHOLE. Shawn, those players COULD OF HAVE CARED LESS FOR U OR THE TEAM AT THAT MOMENT.. You might want to be selective where you AIR DIRTY LAUNDRY because I believe as a TRUE CAPTAIN, you could have addressed this Monday night with the team or HELL when the season started. UGA is paying for U GUYS to have A FREE EDUCATION that you probably won’t use or had no desire to pursue if it wasn’t for YOUR athletic ability; BUT because of believing that NFL IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL.. IMPRESS ME BY SUGGESTING which players play together the BEST even if you have to ROTATE to keep fresh legs as well as the element of surprise to the opponents. I wonder if you VOICED your frustrations on Twitter or Facebook even though players are asked to stay away from such postings PER THAT PUNKAZZ HEAD COACH!! If ALL OF YOU spent more time reading the PLAYBOOK and strategizing which players fit the profile to EXECUTE EFFECTIVELY, UGA DEFENSE WOULD BE A FORCE TO BE WRECKON WITH… Once again, information that don’t get READ is in a BOOK..HINT!!!HINT!!! IF YOU SHOW UP SATURDAY WITH MORE THAN JUST MOUTH, MAYBE THE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW BUT BE READY FOR THE BLOWS THAT ARE SURE TO COME!!!!

Jock sniffer….

I think the auto industry workers will vote for Obama…..since Obama helped them keep their jobs when Romney wanted them to be laid off and rehired at a much lower pay rate so the big companies would make even more money and the working people less. Typical of those who have money and want to take more of it from those who don’t have it…or have very little of it.

But your post is typical of extreme right wing voters…..

Richt told the sideline reporter at halftime of the Kentucky game that the problem on defense was players not staying in their gaps. Also, anyone who thinks CTG has been muzzled hasn’t been paying attention to his sideline demeanor during games.

I hope the 8 to 10 defensive players who will make a Pro team realize that they have all dropped some in where they were projected to land in the draft. Even Jarvis Jones who was going in the first three chosen has dropped to somewhere in the top 12. They are only hurting themselves and losing a lot of money.
This group has 7 games left to show the scouts they are disciplined and can get the job done and play like they should be playing. The problem is not the coaches it is the players.

I can’t believe some of you guys are applauding this…. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb mistake by Shawn Williams…. the kid is not very bright anyway.

This type of “motivation” from a player is what is going to cause us to get other dumb 15 yard penalties. Guess who had one of the dumbest ones against UK – Shawn Williams. The kid needs to keep his mouth shut. It is not that the players have been too soft, it is just being too stupid. You can’t correct stupid in a week.

If there is anything we did not need right now it is DIVISION. Do you think the coaches are going to reward a player for talking against them to the media.

This is a BAD, BAD sign for the UGA-FL Game. We needed unity and not division.

Have you seen the SEC records of the teams we have beaten?

Missouri is 0-4
Tenn is 0-4
Vandy is 2-3
UK is 0-5

That is freaking 2-16… we have beat no one this year. Oh, I left out Buffalo (1-6) and Florida Atlantic University (1-6).

Add that to the 2-16 and you have 4-28!!!!!

How we are ranked in the top 25 I will never know, but am glad we are.

It is a shame this young man did not have enough discipline to keep his mouth shut.

Pointing ut the obvious(Herrera) as the better player was evident last year. Heres your solution: Move back two the 4-3 with Geathers and Jenkins in the 2 gap, C. Washington, and A. Jones at DE. Ok, we got a problem. If playing for a possible NC is not motivating enough, then there is a problem. And there is desention. These comments are either going to escalate it or cause everybody to wake up. The bottom line is that the coaches have failed in leadership here and that points mainly to CMR. Richt has become a political manager, is not hungry for victory and not going to take this program to the next level. I’m done with kind of thing at GA. Bring on some hungry coach that wants to go to the top and willing to pay the price. Some who will call a spade a spade! I’m tired of this listlessness at GA. It has filtered from the HC down to the players. Get is a coach not a manager. Ga football needs a house cleaning! I really was happy when Grantham almost got into a fight at Vandy last year. We finally had some fire at GA. Now what? Is there something in his new contract that makes him dumb down to a Richt personality? Tired. Sick! Sick and tired!

A player should not be naming who they want on the field. That is the coach’s job, period. If Shawn Williams wants to impress then he should quit doing his celebrations following a tackle after an 8 yard gain. Even if it is for a loss or sack he should go celebrate it with his teammates who helped make it possible and not do the NFL strut. It is a TEAM game.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict the following for the Florida game: excessive penalties, dropped passes, missed field goals (and maybe a missed PAT), turnovers, no punt returns, short punts, Murray chokes, and a porous defense.

You can't blame the Defensive Coach for not being emotional

October 23rd, 2012
2:24 pm

If Todd Grantham is one thing, he is emotional.

From giving the choke sign, to shooting a bird, to grabbing his crotch and stealing signals from the offense call in to the sideline before calling his…. he is emotional.

Was it a good hire in retrospect – No. If we had a decent defense, we would be awesome, but this conversion to the 3-4 was a bad move for UGA. We need to go back to the 4-3. Other teams have already figured this out. Grantham and his manjugs are going to be stubborn.

hardtruthandreality, I second all your comments. For two years now, I’ve seen teams run straight up the middle on and on and on. Dang, has anybody heard the word “corrections?” If you guys notice, most of the times, the runners are tackled from the side, not straight ahead. UGA players try to tackle with their arms and not wrap up with their weight behind them. guess they’re afraid of a little contact. I havnt heard C washington’s name hardly any this year and I thought he’d be a beast this year. Geathers played a good game vs Kentucky. Cummings seems to be playing but where the heck is Rambo? Herrara has been the best tackler by far. S Williams does play hard, I’ll give him that & am glad he spoke out. I too am sick of the CMR era. The team mirrors its leader. CMR shows no emotion. His players follow his lead. Simple axiom of leadership: speed of the leader, speed of the team. UGA has an emotion problem because they have a leadership problem. Spurrier, Saban, Miles, and now Muschamp are emotionally charged coaches and their teams respond. Football is a fierce game that must be played fiercely. I’m afraid CMR doesn’t have that in him.

Callout was needed, but it should not need to go to the media. A real man handles this behind closed doors with his teammates (or for most of us with our co-workers). I am not talking about fighting, but constructive meetings, though the volume and style might vary in a locker room.

What you should NOT do is go tell the media or the Church gossip group, or whomever. Espeically when you are openly calling out individuals.

Georgia’s defense has been pathetic. We are worthless and week. Such great blessings from The Creator going to waste. Great athletes but no will to win. No mean streak only sugar sweetness. We are a two hand touch defense. Save the stretchers and body bags past UGA Defenses had available, this 2012 defense is soft as marshmellows. Gators are licking their chomps. Kentucky wants us to come back so they can run over us for 350 yards. How we are 6-1? It takes a mean. manly defense to win championships and titles. Our girly sweethearts are not man enough to shut down a physical team. We like to be manhandled. Com’on guys get us to next year. Maybe our 2013 defense will have some real men and make Georgia fans proud instead of embarrassing us like these wimps.

The problem here Rick James is that Tech knows they are bad.

UGA and some of our fans think we are good. The rest of the world knows we are bad.

Sadly, that makes us worse than Yech.

How many 0fer conference opponents can we have.
Missouri = 0-4
Kentucky = 0-5
Tennessee = 0-4
Auburn = 0-5

Our signature win this year was Vandy!

VANDY! Geesh

As someone pointed out, my analysis was solid but I should have left Spurrier out as an example. To me, the point I was trying to make is not that Spurrier is a bad coach because he’s a good one. It’s that their program always lays an egg once a year, sometimes twice. (Auburn last year being the example) My point being South Carolina does it too though and to be elite you can’t do that every year. South Carolina seems to be able to win some big games though, while we lose almost all of them recently.

SportsFan31313

I have to commend Shawn Williams for calling out his team mates. Everything he said was absolutely true. Georgia entered the season with talks of a great defense according to ESPN Sports Analyst. They have pumbled in recent weeks beginiong with Tennessee, then South Carolina just manhandled them unmerciful 35-7. That even seem not to be a wake up call. Georgia was favored to win by at least four touchdowns, and they barely won the game. Week in and week out lately the offense seem to show up and the defense is not. If they go to Jacksonville playing like they have been for the past three to four weeks, Georgia will LOSE and I mean lose badly ending all hope of repeating this year as the SEC Eastern Division Champions. Flordia seem to be finding a way to win every week. Florida is a young team. Their wins are not convincingly wins, but it has gooten where they need to be. I am very impressed as to how Muschamp has turned this team around. They are in the National Spotlight. No one is taking them for granted but the Georgia Defense.
Right now, Georgia’s Defense is complacent, they are not playing smash mouth football, they don’t seems to have a sense of urgency as evident by the three weeks of terrible performances. Kentucky rushed, and passed at will against the Georgia Defense. Grantham should have pulled those players who were not performing to their potiential, and put players who are hungry enough to want to get out there, and play.
One thing for sure, Georgia’s Defense had better be on point playing four quarters of maximize effort, stopping the run and stopping the pass. If not, game over for Georgia.

Bdawg

Every year, Georgia lays an egg in a game they should win. I mean by that they come out flat and unprepared. Sometimes it’s against a bad team and they still manage to win because of vastly superior talent (Kentucky last year being a good example). Sometimes it’s against a great team (Alabama in 2008).

2006: Georgia lays an egg against Kentucky and Vanderbilt and manages to lose both games. Our starting kicker was hurt and the backup played poorly in those games.
2007: We lost badly at Tennessee after falling behind big in the first half, then beat a Florida team that had destroyed that Vols team.

There are many other games I could point out but you get the point. This is a coaching problem and the fact that it happens every year should show people that.

Switch to the 4-3 and let Geathers and Big John anchor the 2 DT positions with over 700 lbs of beef. They need to rise up and both command double teams which would change things completely. Our DEs are overrated….too much so to put that extra pressure on them by running this useless 3-4 that Grantham runs. The D needs to maintain there gaps when stopping the run. DBs need to look back at the ball and not look so lost all the time. Jarvis needs to fire the team up so that they play 4 qtrs and not quit. Better conditioning would have helped but I guess its a bit too late for that. Guess they better just suck it up and play.

They need to do something….The D is in trouble folks.

I see the above suggestion quite frequently. It’s now been 3 years of trying to install the 3-4, learning the system, recruiting the right personnel, etc. It ain’t gonna be scrapped midway through the season.

I am not saying the 3-4 is the answer, but it’s definitely our best option for the remainder of the season.

I also agree with several posters who have mentioned that the super aggressive, attack the QB every play style that we run has become a thorn in our side, er, rather our middle, as that’s where opposing QBs have exploited the gaps that were created because the ILB or safety was busy trying to get around the edge.

I haven’t heard any criticism about Coach Grantham. I am not sure where his intensity is? Maybe he’s preparing for the NFL again. The 3-4-4 only works if you have a great 3 down lineman. They have the talent but have underachieved. The linebackers are out of position too much and the secondary makes too many tackles. The special teams are mediocre and you can tell that they have no coach. CMR needs to get some new young energetic assistant coaches. Gardner and Bobo would be happy to stay on at UGA forever. I want coordinators and assistants that want to get promoted and move on in their careers. If an assistant or coordinator isn’t getting head coaching or coordinators offers within 3-4 years then they are not doing a good enough job. If you look at the coaching staff of other top 15 schools, they seem to be losing assistants and coordinators each year. It’s bc they are doing a great job and want to move up. Charlie Strong and Dan Mullen were both assistants at UF and are having great Seasons at Louisville and MissState. The list goes on but UGA can’t say that bc their coaches are mediocre. I am tired of mediocre. The best thing for UGA is to let Gardner and Bobo go, hire someone that wants to advance their career. Defense should go Back to 4-3 and recruit lineman like South Carolina. I am hoping Kirby Smart doesn’t get UT job or Auburn job before we have a chance to hire him. But he might not want to coach at alma mater bc of what happened to Ray Goff. But to have 2 former players coaching against us would suck but it would make UGA proud. ( & Smart)
It’s time for a major change in Athens. I just hope the AD knows that too. It doesn’t have to CMR but it needs to be some of the staff. Go Dawgs!!!!!

The problem with Georgia’s D is that you are getting only 50%-75% effort from many of there starters and CMR does not appear to have the guts to bench them. I’d rather get 100% from the 2nd or 3rd string D than this half arsed performance from the starters that we are seeing each and every week!

This year they have played 1!!!!!! team with comparable talent and they lost by 28. They have lost at least 9—-I didn’t feel lke going back any farther—-straight to RANKED teams. IF we are Georgia. don’t you think a team that controls a fertile recruiting area should do more than beat Kentucky, Vandy, Mississippi, Missouri and the FAU’s of the world and then fold up against good team. 31 years is a LONGGGGGGGGG Time to go without playing for the thing we once started a season thinking about. College football is all about the motivation and emotion – get in someone’s grill and if someone’s just going through the motions then put somebody else in their place. It’s about pride, tenacity and emotion and grit. Man we need to find us another Irk Russell type coach. Props to Shawn to get on the ones who are slacking off.
