Richt: ‘It’s great to be able to go on the road in the SEC and get the win’

NOTABLE QUOTES FROM SATURDAY’S GAME

COACH MARK RICHT

On the onside kick . . .

“It was a a great job by (Kentucky kicker Joe Mansour). If that kick would have rolled just a tad bit faster he probably would have gotten it, but it was just kind of creeping along. Their kicker of course had to wait for it to go 10 yards and Connor (Norman) was heads-up to go around there and snatch it and be strong enough to convince the officials that it was his. It was a huge play. There were a lot of huge plays in the game, a game that close, but Connor did a great job.”

On getting the win . . .

“It’s great to be able to go on the road in the SEC and get the win. I think Kentucky did a fantastic job tonight. My hat’s off to coach (Joker) Phillips and his team. I’m also pleased with our team to do what they had to do to win the ballgame. A lot of big plays had to be made. We had to play good down the stretch in order to win it. Again, very thankful and pleased with the victory.”

KENTUCKY COACH JOKER PHILLIPS:

On the onside kick . . .

“We didn’t get the right speed on the ball, first thing. (Mansour) was just waiting for the ball to cross 10 yards — waiting, waiting, waiting. He thought the ball was across the 10-yard line … Their guy got the ball before we could react to it.”

On the close game . . .

“I don’t live in ‘almost.’ At the end of the year, you don’t say, ‘We almost win.’ The records will say wins and losses. We come out here to try to win. We don’t come out here to try to almost win.”

GEORGIA WR TAVARRES KING

On winning . . .

“It was big. It was huge. Any time you go on the road in the SEC, you know it’s going to be tough no matter who you’re playing. So it’s huge. It’s a big win for us.”

On going against a 1-6 team . . .

“It’s the SEC. Anybody can slip up on anybody at anytime and that’s why we’re the greatest conference in the nation. We play great football. That’s a good team.. They’ve just had some tough breaks. They gave us their best shot and we survived it.”

On game being so close . . .

“It’s football. It’s a crazy game.”

On Aaron Murray’s 427-yard passing night . . .

“That’s sick; that’s sick. He deserves it, the way that guy works and goes about his business.”

GEORGIA OLB JORDAN JENKINS

“I think we are just glad to have this game over with. It seems like God wanted us to win.”

GEORGIA OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MIKE BOBO

“They put some extra guys in the box, but we still stayed committed to the running game and that made them have to honor the run, which opened up some things.”

GEORGIA DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR TODD GRANTHAM

On Kentucky’s third-and-long draws . . .

“You’ve got to be able to make a play. You should be able to a stop a run before it goes 10 yards in any coverage.”

I have got to praise Bobo for finally learning something from all those failures in the last few years. When there was 5 minutes left in the game, in the past Bobo would have tried to run the ball twice then Murray would have tried to pass on third and long and would have been sac because the other team would have blitzed and then we would have kicked , another three and out. Tonight Bobo ran what brought us to that point . Throwing the ball and it worked. Go figure that Bobo.

Weird dynamic here. Richt detractors can howl in the face of comparitive blowouts that bama and Florida posted. Richt supporters can say – we won. SEC road game. 6-1 and in control if our own destiny.
Both are true. Next Saturday, one side will be right and one will be wrong. It boils down to jax. I personally see no reason to think we win this game. Hope I’m wrong.

Bobo BETTER have learned from the SC game and be READY for the FL defense with some plays to counter it! Rollouts, screens, mis-direction, whatever WORKS against them! AND…..

they BETTER have LEARNED that they have to be COOL an COMPOSED instead of OVER-HYPED in the 1ST FREAKIN QUARTER, weather ANY storm so you dont go down 21 points BEFORE you know what hit you and the storm is over! Do these 2 things AND……

Dont turn the ball over like SC did(see THEY DIDNT weather the 1st quarter storm either!)dont commit stupid penalties, DONT MISS NO EXTRA POINTS!!! AND FINALLY the defense MUST FINALLY PLAY TO THEIR POTENTIAL……

Do ALL that and UGA WILL win….! Its TIME to play a COMPLETE game in ALL phases and take down the #2, maybe #1 team in the nation Dogs! It IS time….

One last forgotten thing…..the OL MUST HAVE LEARND AND BE READY TO DO THE JOB THE ENTIRE GAME…..TIME TO GROW UP PUPS…..NOW!

“We’re not worried about it. At the end of the day, it all depends on how we play next Saturday. We know we have to play an unbelievable game offensively, defensively and on special teams if we want to have a chance to win that game, so we just have to be ready to go. Well good luck with that…

“They put some extra guys in the box, but we still stayed committed to the running game and that made them have to honor the run, which opened up some things.” To the tune of 77 yards rushing… and meaningless passing stats. Whatever makes you feel good I guess.

“You’ve got to be able to make a play. You should be able to a stop a run before it goes 10 yards in any coverage.” So is this Pop Warner?

Bottom Line: I want someone on here with a pulse to give me one reason to believe UGA will beat Florida? Make your case. Based on what I’ve seen, this is the most poorly coached team UGA has ever produced — based on the supposed talent returning. Murray? Nope — has never won a single, SINGLE, game of significance. Rambo? Please — over rated and toast in the secondary. Corneilious W.? — well he ran his mouth about criticism and hasn’t been heard from since. Swann? – a dropped pass away from getting burned by the worst team in the SEC. Our D line? — fat and out of shape. 206 yards rushing from the worst team in the SEC. Our O line? Not enough time to list. Special teams? Are you kidding? Richt said they get a bad rap — and they are terrible and rightly so. Can’t field a punt and barely a kickoff THIS MANY GAMES INTO THE SEASON? Rhett McCowenn? Really? CMR is stealing his salary as are the clowns who call themselves coaches. Prediction: Florida wins easily by at least 30. And it will never be close. Those who disagree? Tell me why I should have any optimism at all?

The AD needs to clean house in the football coaching staff starting with CMR. If the entire 85 man rosters switched schools, Kentucky would have beaten us by 4 touchdowns. Their coaches are that much better than UGA’s coaches. In the same roster switch occurred against South Carolina, Spurrier would have still beaten UGA by 4 touchdowns. Spurrier is pretty good BUT CMR and especially Bobo are that bad. How many times do we have to be blatantly out coached before the AD makes a change?

The defense isn’t playing great not because of Richt but because of the players. Getting suspended for 4 games has stunted the Bulldogs growth from the off-season till now. But it seems like some of the players are more worried about their draft status than their team right now, and that is Granthams fault. I would like to see some of the younger guys get more cracks at the d-line too. The DE’s are basically just taking on their block instead of breaking it.

UF’s performance Saturday was the exact opposite of UGA’s, and appears to be a microcosm of the last couple games. UF is playing a hard nosed, disciplined, and a cram it down your throat brand of football. Although UF’s stats didn’t show it against USC, their O line was in control of the game, and wore down USC. UF’s special teams dominated the game. Their defense plays disciplined and makes plays. Muschamp has an enthusiasm that the Gators appear to play off of and he is not afraid to show the refs or his players his displeasure for poor performance.
I am not usually a Richt basher, but his comments are very unsettling. How could he ever be satisfied with the performance last night?

Coaching staff’s comments evidence their loser mentality. Second rate program that continues to underachieve under the direction of a dimwitted, overpaid coaching staff. If I close my eyes when listening to their press conference comments it sounds like I’m watching swamp people.

Been saying for years that nothing will change as long as the current braintrust remains in Athens. The only way things will change is if the fans force change with their wallets.

Next week we will get exactly what we deserve – another embarrassment on national TV. Second rate is what second rate does . . . yet again.

Richt’s comments tell it all. The players echoed Richt. Mediocre is a very low standard for a team with any talent at all.

The Kentucky game was a great SEC road win? Get real, Richt. The Kentucky win was a display of the results of bad coaching. We barely escaped being beat by one of the very worst SEC teams. Speaking of which, we still have to play both Auburn and Ole Miss. Anybody think those guys aren’t watching.

I’m sure one of the reasons Kentucky played so well was because they know something our coaching staff, and some fans don’t know – Georgia may have a lot of talented players, but we aren’t much of a football team, our line is bad, our defense is weak, our conditioning is so so, and our players make many, many mistakes.

Kentucky looked like they were up for the game. They looked like they were well coached. They looked like they knew how to play football. My gosh, they almost got the onside kick. It appeared our guys didn’t know the rules about how onside kicks don’t have to go 10 yards except for the kicking team. Does anybody think we would have won had Kentucky got that kick.

To give credit, I thought some of Bobo’s play calling was a bit better than usual for him, and Aaron Murray’s passing was impressive. Our receivers did a good job of holding onto the ball, too.

I don’t think it’s impossible for this team to have a miracle day, and for Florida to have a let down – It Would Take A Miracle To Beat Florida – but I seriously doubt anything could happen so that we beat Florida, Auburn, and Ole Miss.

Could we lose to all three? Sure we could. We could lose to Tech, too. Anybody paying attention to our defense can easily see that a Kentucky team with a weak passing game so we could see what was coming ran the ball down our throats with their weak running game.

Go, Richt. Go, Bobo.

UGA will just drift deeper into the depths until a new (and professional) coaching staff is assembled.

The worst thing UGA could do is hire on another UGA mafia player who has been a wonderful assistant coach. We need to hire the best proven head coach in the country, period.

The old culture of laissez faire is everywhere has been at UGA for a long time. It needs to be exorcized so that our wonderful young athletes can be coached up and reach their real potential.

Maybe it is good news, maybe not.

As some of you may have heard a rumor is floating around in Cleveland that Saban is top choice for future Browns’ coaching vacancy. Maybe this, with the Arkansas vacancy, will be the kick in the rear that will be needed to get the new staff in. Strong and Smart are both on the coaching list at Arkansas – no secret. By some chance the rumor is true and Saban is ready to take another shot at the NFL, well maybe Kirby will be the man they would be eyeing at Bama. UGA will have no time to waste. Many of us remember a couple of years ago midseason the rumors had Muschamp returning to Athens. Did not happen and we see what he has built in Gainesville.

Keep in mind, the big NFL names we here about are going to be more $ than our programs leaders are going to be willing to spend. Couple of the other big names at college level are finesse guys – like CMR. Maybe they coach up, maybe not.

A few will say this is premature, but regardless of what happens in Jax (yea right), let us prepare for the future and hope we have a guy who understands SEC football.

I just don’t get it. Who are you people? Georgia is not a premiere Football program and never has been. We are traditionally a good team who every now and then has a great year. Firing CMR is not the answer. Look at UT now… I bet they’d love to have Phillp Fulmer back, but they wanted to run him out. Notre Dame is just now recovering from Running Lou Holtz out of town. If Mark Richt was fired we would be lost in the woods. I would never support going back to how God-Awful we were in the 90’s under Ray and Jim. I really am discouraged by our fans more than anything. It is embarrassing to have a one loss team in the best conference in the nation and people want to fire the coaches. Ashamed of the lack of class in our fanbase!

MontanaDawg

October 21st, 2012
11:48 am

To VA-Dawg…who have we beaten this year that is really any good? We have not beaten a single Top 25 ranked team and are 2-14 against ranked teams since 2008. Richt was good initially and brought our program up, but it has languished and failed year after year for many years now.

So we pay Richt and staff millions to be mediocre? We settle for mediocrisy? Are you satisfied with being pretty good against average and bad teams and simply awful against ranked teams?

Look at what Muschamp has done in his 2nd year at Florida? Look at what Richt is doing in his 12th year at UGA? Not a thing. The UGA football program – with all its talent – is going nowhere. UGA sends more players to the NFL than almost any other program. I respect Richt as a Christian man but no longer as a head coach.

Yes, I am frustrated at our lack of focus, discipline, and execution when it comes to game day. I don’t see the passion in our staff or really most of the players.

So, NO, I am a DAWG fan that has every right to be dissatisfied with a 6-1 record against mostly subpar opposition. Obviously, some fans and the coaching staff is just fine with mediocre.

I love the Dawgs but am really disappointed with their play. I really like Mark Richt. But I think one problem with his coaching is he acts like its the players’ team and lets them decide how they are going to play. It’s time for Mark Richt to realize he is the head coach and not each of the players’ away-from-home dad. His job and the rest of the coaching staff is to make sure they are ready to play each Saturday. And he needs to put some fire in his and his players bellies. They can beat FL but they really have to get their heads and hearts in the game from the first play on.

The “look at Tennessee” argument is really getting old. Lane Kiffin was a great hire, whipped our butts that’s for sure, until he left them high and dry and the program in shambles. Since then, Dooley stumbled with some bad apples but he has the program on the right track. The state of Georgia is a treasure trove of quality recruits, so much that Tennessee has taken some of the best for years. UGA has 3 players from Tenn on its roster, all from Memphis. UT has 16 guys from Georgia.

There is no reason to believe that a qualified hire (i.e. good coach, good recruiter, good evaluator) shouldn’t be able to get UGA to national championship contender within 2-3 years a la Muschamp.

Don’t know what in the world is going on with the defense but something is terribly wrong. Same for the offense. Too much talent on this team to perform the way they are. Seems like they were playing better with the star players suspended. Can’t help but think that it’s back to the same old unmotivated, business as usual, approach to every game. I surely hope they don’t get killed in Jacksonville next week but it’s looking like they will because Muschamp is getting those guys fired and ready to play unlike CMR. After the SC game and then watching them perform the way they did against a terrible Kentucky team after a week off, Richt better not rest on his laurels. Another beat down and McGarrity will probably start thinking about who will take over the program next (if he hasn’t already). UGA has all the resources needed to compete at the highest level and Richt hasn’t beaten a top ten team in a long time. Beat UF or get on with your mission work full time bud!

obviously it is great to be able to get any win with Ricth even against lowly Kentucky. It is highly unlikely though to ever win another SEC or BCS championships under him again. If we do get lucky and ever win another how many years will it be 2005 was the last one.

bigdog, that’s my point. Richt beat some very good teams in his first 5-6 years but has lost his fire. Loyalty to sub par assistants and his relinquishing the offensive play calling duties to Bozo are costing us games and opportunities. The narrow victory at lowly Kentucky will probably drop us a spot or two in the new polls later today and the meltdown against SC (which should never happen) a couple of weeks ago are indicators that it’s time for a changing of the guard in Athens. Richt is a good man and did a great job for a while but McGarrity needs to make a statement that mediocrity cannot and will not be tolerated at UGA with the vast resources available to the program.

I would absolutely love to see UGA beat UF and go on to the SEC CG but the reality is they won’t. And it’s solely because of the coaching style that CMR is exercising. Even if they do find a way to win in JAX, they won’t beat Alabama. At any rate, this should not be acceptable at the University of Georgia. I read an article a couple of years ago (forget where) that showed the top 10 most profitable football programs in the country and UGA was in the top 3. They have every resource in the world to compete at the highest level on a regular basis and they simply are not getting it done. The article also read that there are four programs in the country where the coaching staff could simply recruit in their own state and never leave to win championships and UGA is one of the 4. I’m not saying that recruiting has been a problem because it definitely hasn’t, but that the utilization of that talent certainly has. I’m tired of people taking up for a coach that has lost his edge and obviously will never win another SEC championship, never mind a NC. Those that stay on board with CMR as head coach are satisfied with what we’ve been enduring for the past 5-6 years. I’m not at all satisfied with beating up on Georgia Southern and Buffalo and losing to SC three years in a row, UF 8 or 9 out of 12, Boise State in our own back yard in front of a national audience, the blackout fiasco with GameDay set up in Athens, etc….There’s an obviously glaring trend here and anyone that doesn’t recognize it is probably buying ocean front real estate in Arizona. I’m not buying it!

One word that describes what may be ailing the defense and the Bulldawg nation through this 2012 football season:

impulsive
adj
1 characterized by actions based on sudden desires, whims, or inclinations rather than careful thought.

This season started out with suspensions of five players four of which were on the defensive side of the ball. These five players failed to understand the meaning of the word impulsive. (temptation)

Impulsiveness is all right in a child but disastrous in a man. An impulsive adult is always a spoiled person. (believing himself as righteous) Impulsiveness needs to be trained into intuition through discipline. (three of these players received a four game suspension but for some reason have not grasped the full meaning of the word impulsive) Studying the word humility and understanding it, would also help in understanding the meaning of impulsive.

I am not just singling out the players who were suspended for games but covers several players on the defense and special teams.

Todd Grantham is a very good defensive coach and has daily repeatedly trained his defensive players over and over, the correct position to be in, to stop the play but players keep biting on their first impulse instead of believing the discipline in which they are daily trained!

Some fans on this blog, you too could use a dose of the meaning of the word impulsiveness, for many of you are showing the behavior signs of those who suffer from impulsiveness.

I would hope that coach Richt will allow Grantham the nasty disposition that is needed to get his players in line… in other words don’t pour water on Grantham’s fire for that is what exactly is needed to play great defense!

Grantham will not use the LSU recipe to beat fl–he is too arrogant that his sorry attempt at the 3-4 will work. The 3-4 is never very efficient against the run. It is designed to get a rush on the QB and to disguise blitz packages to disrupt the passing game. Have you noticed how the Gurads get out get their hands on our LBs inside? Remember this, Grantham’s D in the NFL was the worst against the run and it is also terrible against the run the in the SEC–the home of running the ball and smash mouth defense–Sammy, I hope you are correct, but this years fl team looks better and seems to be gelled together better than last year’s team. If we are relegated to one dimension of Murray throwing the ball with Bobo’s penchant for deep time consuming routes for quick scores (Donnan Protege) we are in deep trouble. Richt never has and never will understand the importance of building a strong , run blocking O-line, and scrapping his outdated, 90s FSU offense for an I-formation-based power run offense. I hated when UGA hired him because he transformed UGA to FSU offensively speaking. The finesse, pass-first, 1990s FSU football is alive and well in the SEC as long as Richt remains head coach at UGA. You can call it Old man football, Bowdenball, or grown man football, the results will remain the same……….Richt will play down to mediocre competition, narrowly win, and get soundly beaten by run-based, ranked teams. FSU of 20 years past is current day UGA. Richt only cares about getting a mediocre QB an opportunity to dink and dump off short passes to WRs & RBs and have the receiver run for many more yards than the pass itself !! LOL !! 90s FSU wasted so much talent and it’s the same at present day UGA. Richt will run at times but he has the RB to run wide mainly because the O-line can’t run block and can only pass block marginally. That’s why Richt has every RB trained to pass block first rather than do what they do best which is to……….run the damned ball.

You can talk all time coaching wins and percentages all you want but Richt will NEVER be remembered with the all-time greats. Anybody remember John Cooper or Mike Archer ? Only the delusional, apologistic Richtfans will hail him as a good, christian man, and a winning coach. But real UGA fans will remember Richt as a coach who piled up a winning coaching percentage vs. mediocre teams, winning meaningless games he was supposed to win often unimpressively, and never able to win the BIG, meaningful game. Thus he will go down in UGA lore as the coach that built delusional fans up only to consistently let them down. UGa wil get to the next level when the get the next coach that has the correct mentality, because Richt never has and never will have it. We need to spend whatever it takes to buy out current SF Niner coach Jim Harbaugh. Now that’s a damn good POWER ball coach !! Go Dogs !!

Mike Bobo needs to attend some local high school camps to get a better understanding of the spread offense, the version he runs looks like a 10 year old team, especially the spread running attack. Also, that stupid toss that he has copied from LSU is crap, mainly because the LB’s don’t have to worry about play action and can just attack the line of scrimmage, at least fake it every once in a while. We can only play old man football if we have the o-line and we don’t.
