Richt: ‘It’s great to be able to go on the road in the SEC and get the win’

NOTABLE QUOTES FROM SATURDAY’S GAME

COACH MARK RICHT

On the onside kick . . .

“It was a a great job by (Kentucky kicker Joe Mansour). If that kick would have rolled just a tad bit faster he probably would have gotten it, but it was just kind of creeping along. Their kicker of course had to wait for it to go 10 yards and Connor (Norman) was heads-up to go around there and snatch it and be strong enough to convince the officials that it was his. It was a huge play. There were a lot of huge plays in the game, a game that close, but Connor did a great job.”

On getting the win . . .

“It’s great to be able to go on the road in the SEC and get the win. I think Kentucky did a fantastic job tonight. My hat’s off to coach (Joker) Phillips and his team. I’m also pleased with our team to do what they had to do to win the ballgame. A lot of big plays had to be made. We had to play good down the stretch in order to win it. Again, very thankful and pleased with the victory.”

KENTUCKY COACH JOKER PHILLIPS:

On the onside kick . . .

“We didn’t get the right speed on the ball, first thing. (Mansour) was just waiting for the ball to cross 10 yards — waiting, waiting, waiting. He thought the ball was across the 10-yard line … Their guy got the ball before we could react to it.”

On the close game . . .

“I don’t live in ‘almost.’ At the end of the year, you don’t say, ‘We almost win.’ The records will say wins and losses. We come out here to try to win. We don’t come out here to try to almost win.”

GEORGIA WR TAVARRES KING

On winning . . .

“It was big. It was huge. Any time you go on the road in the SEC, you know it’s going to be tough no matter who you’re playing. So it’s huge. It’s a big win for us.”

On going against a 1-6 team . . .

“It’s the SEC. Anybody can slip up on anybody at anytime and that’s why we’re the greatest conference in the nation. We play great football. That’s a good team.. They’ve just had some tough breaks. They gave us their best shot and we survived it.”

On game being so close . . .

“It’s football. It’s a crazy game.”

On Aaron Murray’s 427-yard passing night . . .

“That’s sick; that’s sick. He deserves it, the way that guy works and goes about his business.”

GEORGIA OLB JORDAN JENKINS

“I think we are just glad to have this game over with. It seems like God wanted us to win.”

GEORGIA OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR MIKE BOBO

“They put some extra guys in the box, but we still stayed committed to the running game and that made them have to honor the run, which opened up some things.”

GEORGIA DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR TODD GRANTHAM

On Kentucky’s third-and-long draws . . .

“You’ve got to be able to make a play. You should be able to a stop a run before it goes 10 yards in any coverage.”

28 POINT FAVORITE. YOU NAILED IT. RICHT FOCUSES HIS RECRUITING ON SKILL PLAYERS-ACC / WAC STYLE. SABAN, MUSCHAMP FOCUS ON THE TRENCHES. EVERY YEAR SAME RESULT – OUR FAT, SLOW, OUT OF SHAPE LINEMEN IMPLODE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL WHEN FACING A RANKED TEAM.

Sammy you are full of the kool-aid. We would take a mediocre 50-50 record against ranked teams and a coach who acts like he cares about more than his paycheck. Being a dedicated fan does not mean being a delusional fan. I am glad you are happy to have a number 12 ranking after playing nobody ranked except a team that got blown out by Florida who previously blew us out. Wishful thinking will not get us there. Facing reality will. I hope you are happy with your mediocre ranking at the end of the season after we lose to a mediocre team in a meaningless bowl. How many groundhog years does it take?

Be interesting to see if Florida’s freshman QB can ebat UGA passing the ball.

We’ll stack 8 or 9 all day long, so we’re gonna find out.

Look for Grantham to use the same plan that LSU used, but control the back better by forcing him inside.

QB only threw 12 times for 61 yards.

Florida brought in 2 EXTRA offensive lineman in the 2nd half to run the ball, UGA has the size to handle that.

Thing to do on Florida, is get by 21+ in the 2nsd half, force them to throw, they’ll fall apart. They arn’t built to pass the ball.

Take advantage of the Florida’s imbalanced offense.

Grantham will not use the LSU recipe to beat fl–he is too arrogant that his sorry attempt at the 3-4 will work. The 3-4 is never very efficient against the run. It is designed to get a rush on the QB and to disguise blitz packages to disrupt the passing game. Have you noticed how the Gurads get out get their hands on our LBs inside? Remember this, Grantham’s D in the NFL was the worst against the run and it is also terrible against the run the in the SEC–the home of running the ball and smash mouth defense–Sammy, I hope you are correct, but this years fl team looks better and seems to be gelled together better than last year’s team. If we are relegated to one dimension of Murray throwing the ball with Bobo’s penchant for deep time consuming routes for quick scores (Donnan Protege) we are in deep trouble. But, who knows, maybe the stars align ….

Florida doesn’t like to throw the ball.

They average 137 yards per game passing.

Grantham will jam 8 or 9 in the box, and make Florida beat you left handed.

Richt never has and never will understand the importance of building a strong , run blocking O-line, and scrapping his outdated, 90s FSU offense for an I-formation-based power run offense. I hated when UGA hired him because he transformed UGA to FSU offensively speaking. The finesse, pass-first, 1990s FSU football is alive and well in the SEC as long as Richt remains head coach at UGA. You can call it Old man football, Bowdenball, or grown man football, the results will remain the same……….Richt will play down to mediocre competition, narrowly win, and get soundly beaten by run-based, ranked teams. FSU of 20 years past is current day UGA. Richt only cares about getting a mediocre QB an opportunity to dink and dump off short passes to WRs & RBs and have the receiver run for many more yards than the pass itself !! LOL !! 90s FSU wasted so much talent and it’s the same at present day UGA. Richt will run at times but he has the RB to run wide mainly because the O-line can’t run block and can only pass block marginally. That’s why Richt has every RB trained to pass block first rather than do what they do best which is to……….run the damned ball.

You can talk all time coaching wins and percentages all you want but Richt will NEVER be remembered with the all-time greats. Anybody remember John Cooper or Mike Archer ? Only the delusional, apologistic Richtfans will hail him as a good, christian man, and a winning coach. But real UGA fans will remember Richt as a coach who piled up a winning coaching percentage vs. mediocre teams, winning meaningless games he was supposed to win often unimpressively, and never able to win the BIG, meaningful game. Thus he will go down in UGA lore as the coach that built delusional fans up only to consistently let them down. UGa wil get to the next level when the get the next coach that has the correct mentality, because Richt never has and never will have it. We need to spend whatever it takes to buy out current SF Niner coach Jim Harbaugh. Now that’s a damn good POWER ball coach !! Go Dogs !!

It’s certainly nice to see that there are UGA fans that can get behind their team when they need them most and not simply whine and cry like a spoiled child when they don’t win as pretty as they like. I’m sick of so called” fans” who ride the high winds of victories and then turn around and sulk and pout and blame everyone but Russ for things not going their way. Win or lose, when the players put on the Red and Black they do so proudly and give it their all. It’s about damned time the fans did the same. If you aren’t proud to wear the Red and Black, I’m sure there is some orange out there that will look great on you.

I have loved the Dawgs since I was a kid, however, it really makes me sick that our coaching staff has so many good players and do not demand they play to their potential. I have back CMR but now I think he should sit down and honestly evaluate his program, the coaching and his contribution. CMR has the total responsibility of the team, how can he not see he is not living up to the requirements of a head coach. Prior to the SC game Coach Richt said he was not worried about the defense, I have not heard him retract that statement. Also, to say you are pleased with the Kentucky game is telling your players you are pleased with their performance. The complete coaching staff needs to go.

Mutt why are you concerned about where Saban goes are don’est go. He is not UGA coach. Saban and Spurrier both tried the NFL and neither one of them like it. Saban contract goes to 2018 and I’m sure if he decided to stay longer all he would have to do is say so. As long as Saban and Spurrier and Miles coach in the SEC UGA has a hard row to hoe. Don’t worry the Dawgs will be SEC champs and win the National Champions and win the Super Bowl in the PRE-SEASON I believe that too. In fact I would bet on it. The fact is that a win in the SEC is a helluva lot better than losing and it takes a lot more than most bloggers understand to put together a program that wins consistently in the SEC. I am very glad our dawgs WON the game in Kentucky. Having said this, it is way past time for Richt AND Murray to win a BIG game. I am and have been a supporter of Coach Richt since his arrival at UGA, however, another flat performance or blow out loss this weekend and I will concur that it is time to look for a change. Too many ongoing glaring issues are becoming impossible to overlook any longer….missed extra point attempts, special teams letdowns, inability to stop simplistic straight up running attacks, ridiculous penalties, lack of playing tiime for players with great potential due to unyielding allegiance to certain players, etc….. I will be in JAX hoping to see a major improvement in effort and execution and hopeflly a huge WIN. Go Bulldogs!!!

Mike Bobo needs to attend some local high school camps to get a better understanding of the spread offense, the version he runs looks like a 10 year old team, especially the spread running attack. Also, that stupid toss that he has copied from LSU is crap, mainly because the LB’s don’t have to worry about play action and can just attack the line of scrimmage, at least fake it every once in a while. We can only play old man football if we have the o-line and we don’t.
