Notebook: OLB Jordan Jenkins not flashy but gets job done for Bulldogs

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Jordan Jenkins’ stats in his second career start won’t win him any awards. The freshman outside linebacker from Harris County – starting in place of injured All-American Jarvis Jones – finished with just two tackles and was given half-credit for a tackle for loss.

But defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was heaping praise on the young understudy after Georgia’s 29-24 win over Kentucky. He was particularly pleased about Jenkins’ actions on one play for which Jenkins got no statistical credit.

Kentucky ran a reverse right with wide receiver Demarco Robinson on a critical third-quarter drive. Jenkins was not fooled, however, and held his ground on the offense’s right flank. Robinson had to turn up field and Alec Ogletree took down Robinson hard for a six-yard loss. The third-down play simultaneously took Kentucky out of field-goal and four-down range.

“Actually we ran that same play on him in practice and it wasn’t as successful,” Grantham said with a grin. “So we ran it again on Thursday and he played it like he did tonight. That’s the thing with Jordan: the more he plays and does things, he gets better and better. He fought through it a little bit today, but he played well enough for us to win and I think he’s got a tremendous future. People will recognize him moving forward.”

Jenkins played almost every snap of the game because Jones could not go. Jones traveled with the team, but Georgia held out its star defender because of a right-ankle injury suffered in the South Carolina game. Jones is also battling a strained groin and a gimpy left knee.

“He definitely could not have played tonight,” coach Mark Richt assured. “We’ll have to wait and see if he can practice Monday.”

Jenkins, for one, was not thrilled with the job he did.

“Well, the first half was not good for me,” he said. “The first play I got my neck cut up. The second play I thought I had a stinger and the third play I got my ankle rolled. I couldn’t set the edge well because I didn’t want to hurt my ankle”

Nevertheless, Grantham said the experience is going to prove valuable for Jenkins.

“He’s the kind of player we want to get at the University of Georgia,” Grantham said. “He’s fun to coach because you see progress each time he plays. He’s going to make a lot of plays in his career.”

Grantham said Jones is considered “questionable” for the Florida game.

Special teams snafus continue

Georgia’s comedy of errors on special teams continued on Saturday.

Marshall Morgan missed his third point-after attempt of the season in the second quarter. The wide-right miss was the Bulldogs’ fifth extra-point fail this year. They have also had one blocked and mishandled a snap on another. Morgan has had three other extra-point kicks carom through off the uprights.

Morgan made his only field goal attempt Saturday — a 27-yarder to end the first half — but it, too, hit the left upright and bounced through. Morgan is 5-of-6 on field goals for the season.

“I believe he’s hit the upright more than anyone in the nation,” Richt said. “He probably has our record for that, I’d think.”

Saturday’s miss came with 8:28 left in the second quarter after the Bulldogs drove 75 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. His miss left Kentucky in the lead, 14-13.

Georgia also had a penalty nullify an otherwise well-conceived fake punt that saw Malcolm Mitchell gain 33 yards on fourth-and-two at midfield. Richt explained that Georgia’s shift left Kosta Vavlas, who wears the number 38, uncovered on one end, making him an ineligible receiver. Richt wasn’t certain immediately but thought the officials “probably got it right.”

Lead Dogs

Quarterback Aaron Murray’s 427 yards passing was a career best for the junior from Tampa and his four touchdown made him Georgia’s all-time leader for passing scores with 75. David Greene was the previous record holder with 72 from 2001-04.

Murray also set a school mark for completion percentage (78.95) for quarterbacks with at least 30 completions. He broke the mark previous held by his current quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo (76.92 vs. Georgia Tech in 1997). Murray’s passing yardage was the second most in the SEC this season. Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel had 453 against Arkansas.

Senior Tavarres King had a career-high 9 catches, as did fellow wideout Malcolm Mitchell. His 188 yards was King’s fifth 100-yard receiving game in his career and second this season. It was the first time since 2010 that Georgia had two receivers go over 100 yards. Mitchell had 103.

Georgia free safety Bacarri Rambo led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles and linebacker Alec Ogletree and strong safety Shawn Williams had 10 apiece. Rambo and Williams were each assessed personal fouls, Rambo on a late hit out of bounds and Williams for a facemask.

Etc. . . .

Senior defensive end Abry Jones had to leave the game in the first quarter with a left ankle injury. Coaches weren’t sure if he’ll be able to practice next week. . . . Sophomore Chris Conley caught his first touchdown pass of 2012 and the third of his career in the third quarter. . . . It had been 20 games since Kentucky had scored on its opening possession of a game. The Wildcats did it in precision-like fashion, driving 84 yards in 13 plays over 5:01 to score on a four-yard pass from Jalen Whitlow to wide receiver Aaron Boyd. . . . Georgia’s 97-yard scoring drive in the first quarter was the longest since a 99-yard drive against Ole Miss in 2011.

A great coach would be looking at the negatives when they win by 40. Richt is just happy to beat the Kentucky Wildcats. Georgia is going to get out outplayed, out coached, and out classed in Jacksonville. Florida wins 35-20. Aaron Murray will have to throw over 30 times and he will be picked twice, one for a pick 6. Marshall Morgan misses another PAT but it doesn’t matter. Georgia gets 0 punt return yards and allows a big punt return to DeBose. They stop the run ok early, but Driskel carves them up.

I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF GA FOR THE YEAR!! UNLIKE RICHT, I AM NOT HAPPY WHEN A TALENTED TEAM LIKE GA GETS PUSHED AROUND ALL NIGHT!! THEN RICHT WAS HAPPY?? NO WONDER THEY PLAY LIKE THEY DO! ANY COACH THAT THINKS GIVING A TEAM 220 YARDS ON THE GROUND IS GOOD JUST DON’T GET IT!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!

All we need is one good defensive game……let’s hope Grantham earns his money this week and gets this unit ready. If the offense can just hold on to the ball (unlike South Carolina yesterday) then we have a shot……maybe.

Lamar, get a life. There are more important things going on in life to get fired up about. These boys won the game, that is what matters. These are college kids, not professionals. A win, in the SEC, is a win. I am just glad that UGA is playing meaningful games this late in the year. I remember the Goff and Donnan years when our season was done by the UT game.

Fla game will be the breaking point on weather the fans stay with CMR or leave. This was suppose to be “the year”. A big lose to FLA and SC and ugly wins on the easy teams could be the end of confidence. Next year is rebuilding- not reloading esp on Defense.

Morgan kicking a fieldgoal just before the half, and banking it off the post was priceless!
Coach Mark Richt laughing about it as they went to the locker room was?????????????
Murray had a great game, as usual he had a couple of tipped passed and one that hit a defensive lineman in the stomach.
Folks on our last drive we were one tipped pass/pick six away from coming home with our A$$ beat by a team that was picked to lose by 4 touchdowns!!!
Love our coaches but, it’s time to start earning the paycheck!
The 2 personal foul penalties on Williams and Rambo are nothing more than a lack of discipline. Another personal foul on a kickoff for pushing and shoving out of bounds.
Need to start benching some of these players for these penalties for a series or two and maybe get through to them.
7 missed opportunities on PAT’s. As many great kickers that has come through UGA it looks like one of them would visit pratice and give our freshman kicker some ideas, the coaches don’t seem to have any!
Solutions? Go for 2 after every touchdown.
Keep 2 safties back on punts just to keep from giving up a pass for a 1st down, and rush 10 men for the blocked punt! Can’t be any worse off than our punt retuner letting it roll to the 3.
Going for 2 after a touchdown, I had rather take my chances on Murrary passing for 2 than Morgan kicking for 1.
Sorry to complain after a SEC win but, in many areas lastnight we were beaten BADLY!

I will say this. I am not impressed with our Online. Dallas Lee looks unathletic. Looks like the fat kid who plays cause he takes up space but can’t block anybody. #35 I can’t remember his name but he is our linebacker. He doesn’t play fast at all. Washington has disappeared. Ogletree is a beast and Herrera is ok. We need Jarvis Healthy this week. I think Vasser is average. The linebackers and DE r not getting it done as a group. That’s why we see the run defense giving up yards

How can anybody be negative on Rambo last night. He led the team in tackles. I must have been looking at something else.

My guess is that Georgia spent some time prepping for KY, but they’ve been working on a Florida game plan.

Florida had something like 180 yards of total offense yesterday. Their defense and special teams play was the difference, and especially the turnovers. Georgia can play with them if they minimize mistakes.

Murray all week will be in choke mode.

Outback Bowl, if we are lucky at 10-2. Another wasted CMR team, full of unfulfilled dreams and goals.

UGA alumnus, I am.

I SAW the SC Florida game

October 21st, 2012
10:38 am

After Florida scored third TD, their stats were like 59 yes rising and 47 passing yards.

SC saw Florida get turnovers inside the 20 yd line several times early in that game that lead to 21 points. THAT fact cost SC the game, NOT that Florida dominated them early..

FOOTNOTE FACT: Muschamp played at UGA vs St Spurrier, who back then was coaching the Gators. Sort of ironic that he pistol whipped Steve yesterday. THIS IS WHY SEC ball is fun.

UGA on the LOS is lacking and that s CMR’s fault. The SEC is won and LDL on the LOS and every year for years, UGA lacks physicality on their O line. Curiously, the D line is substandard lately.

Better yet have you ever seen him play ball before he arrived at UGA. Aaron Murray had more than 100 yards MORE passing than 2 of the QB’s ESPN has on its “impact players” of the week awards list. He’s not even mentioned. Why? Because the team as a whole is deemed irrelevant by ESPN after SC’s drubbing of our Dawgs. Just another reason why good teams CANNOT have games like that on national TV and expect to get any serious attention from the press or pollsters. Do you think Saban could have talked his way into the NC game if ‘Bama had stunk up the field with marginal wins the rest of the year? A win is not a win when it comes to the big picture. You have to show you can win like you are supposed to when it counts. It is what it is.
