It’s Georgia-Florida week. Will Jarvis Jones, Abry Jones play? Here’s the latest …

Florida’s easier-than-expected win over South Carolina and Georgia’s tougher-than-expected win over Kentucky combined to raise the stakes for Saturday’s annual showdown in Jacksonville.

“We know what this game means for us and for Florida,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said Sunday night. “Our guys are excited about the opportunity to play this game and have it mean as much as it means right now. … I don’t think we’re going to have to sit here and try to figure out a way to motivate anybody.”

A win by Florida (7-0, 6-0 SEC) would clinch a berth in the SEC Championship game for the Gators, while a win by Georgia (6-1, 4-1) would put the Bulldogs in position to reach the league title game with victories next month over Ole Miss and Auburn.

On paper, a number of factors seem to favor Florida, including:

  • The difference in the teams’ national rankings — Florida No. 2 and Georgia No. 10, according to this week’s BCS standings;
  • The teams’ disparate performances over the weekend — Florida a 44-11 winner over South Carolina (6-2, 4-2) and Georgia a 29-24 winner over Kentucky (1-7, 0-5);
  • The teams’ contrasting results against South Carolina — Georgia a 28-point loser Oct. 6 to a team Florida defeated by 33 points two weeks later;
  • Georgia’s recent record against top-tier opponents — 1-9 since the start of the 2008 season against teams ranked in the nation’s top 10 at the time of the game;
  • And the Bulldogs’ record against the Gators over the past 22 seasons — 4-18 despite a Georgia victory last year

“At the end of the day, it all depends on how we play,” Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray said. “We know we have to play an unbelievable game offensively, defensively and on special teams if we want to have a chance to win that game. We just have to be ready to go.”

Florida is the SEC East’s only unbeaten team and would clinch the division title outright with a win. A Georgia victory would give the Bulldogs the tiebreaker in the East if they and Florida finish with one league loss apiece.

Richt had mixed news Sunday on two key defensive players with ankle injuries. He expressed optimism that linebacker Jarvis Jones, who sat out the Kentucky game, will be able to play, but indicated that end Abry Jones, who left the game early in the first quarter, probably won’t be available.

“My hope is  [Jarvis Jones] will be able to practice as early as Monday. That’s what I hope, but whether or not that happens, I’m not sure,” Richt said. “He’s definitely been making progress. I think there’s a very good chance he’ll play, but if he’s not healthy enough to go, then we’re not going to do it. I think there’s a good chance he will [play].”

Richt said Abry Jones suffered a different  injury to the same ankle that he sprained earlier this season. “Right now he’s out, and we’re going to learn a little bit more tomorrow when he sees some doctors,” Richt said. “But at this minute, I’d say there’s a good chance he’ll be out.”

Georgia hasn’t won back-to-back games against Florida since 1988-89. The Bulldogs won 24-20 last year and lost 34-31 in overtime in 2010.

Etc.

Punter Collin Barber, helped off the field after being run into by a Kentucky player, “will be fine,” Richt said. … Ray Drew is “going to get more opportunities” at defensive end with Abry Jones injured, Richt said. … Because of South Carolina’s back-to-back losses to LSU and Florida, the damage done to the Bulldogs by their Oct. 6 loss to the Gamecocks was quickly erased, at least in the SEC East standings. “We knew [after the loss to South Carolina] that there was a lot of football to be played and if we get back to work and start trying to take care of our own business, there would be a good chance we would be back in the race,” Richt said. “As it turned out, it happened relatively quick. The reality was that when we were playing South Carolina we were in control of our destiny. And then the very next game we played was Kentucky, and by the time we kicked off we were actually in the same spot we were going into the South Carolina game.”

we are getting killed in recruiting this yr look at the quality of players. i love three star athletes when they are in the right hands but have you seen this coaching staff. it struggles with four and five star recruits all over the field. this yr is our weakest class, alot of numbers, but very low in quality. once you get past the first 6 you dont see much after that but a bunch of guys that have to be redshirted. The state of ga is saturated with top talent. it has 4 guys in the top 10 overall in the nation and we are not getting one of those young guys. We only have one or two of the top ten guys in the state of ga. bama, south carolina, auburn, and clemson all have more of the top guys in our state than we do. Recruiting is killin us especially on the line of scrimmage. you got 3 d linemen in this state that are the best in the country and none of them even consider uga. what is wrong with that picture. we got great skill no line on either side. jenkins needs to step his stuff up big time bc his stock his falling fast.

The problem with UGA’s defense is that Grantham can’t seem to decide what he wants it to be…

Last year, UGA was getting a lot of pressure on the QB, mainly with Jones. This year, Grantham seems to be dropping Jones into coverage a lot more.

Rambo has always been hot/cold. You can’t count on him for anything and as soon as you dismiss him he’ll have a big play or even a stretch of good games.

Cummings has his moments but UGA does not have a shutdown corner.

UGA playing a 3-4 cannot stop the run or apply pressure to the QB with just the DL. The whole point of using a 3-4 instead of a 4-3 is that you have to bring pressure with your LBs but you have the luxury of mixing up the blitz package so that the offense doesn’t really know where it’s coming from. It looks like when UGA does bring pressure they are treating the LBs like DLs and allowing them to get swallowed up by the OL. No real aggression or high motor.

The whole reason the Tampa 2 became popular and successful is because when you have 4 quality DL who can pressure the backfield it allows you to zone over the top. We don’t have 4 quality DL! We don’t have shutdown corners! That means we MUST blitz with zone over top. Any combo of LB/S/CB will do but if we’re going to let teams complete passes anyway with full zone coverage, we may as well take a chance on hurrying the pass or even sacking the QB with heavy pressure.

The element of time is critical for a passing team. If you can’t take away their routes then take away their time for deep routes and keep everything close to the LOS. Teams who can pass the ball light UGA’s defense up and run on us too!

There is great opportunity for UGA to whip Florida this weekend if the Dawgs don’t play like wimps again. UF cannot pass! I say load up the box, stop their run, and let them complete short passes while keeping the safeties back to prevent deep completions. If the QB doesn’t have time then he cannot complete a deep pass anyway.

UF couldn’t even drive the ball on SC. They scored most of their points cashing in on SC mistakes. UGA just has to grow a pair and stop with the lame post-loss “there’s more things important in life than football” talk. We all know that’s true and don’t need the UGA program telling us this important fact of life. We are only interested in seeing this team play football; we’ll handle the rest of our lives!

Thank you, NP Dawg. Well said! If you truly care about the team, you have to be positive and supportive this week. Even if you want various coaches including CMR fired, you cannot be a true fan of the Dawgs if you aren’t rooting your rear off for the team this week. Simple as that. If you do otherwise, such as hoping they lose so that the chances will increase of coaches being canned, then you aren’t a fan of the Dawgs. Period.

The ONLY chance for UGA to win Saturday and I really mean the only chance, is for us to come out strong in the 1st half and jump to a 14 or 21 point lead. Fla has been absolutely lights out in the 2nd half in pretty much all of their games. And one of our biggest problems of the season is coming out of the gate looking like crap. Nothing from the games we’ve played so far this year, gives me any confidence that they will come out Saturday and actually play to their potential.

Tried to tell you guys last week it was going to be a tough game.. tried to tell you..

Also tried to tell you last summer UGA has the WORST special teams in the country.

I am ready for some fans to give me some credit and say I was right.

1.) We missed another extra point that could have cost ust.

2.) We simply cannot and will not field a short punt. I have never seen anything like it in my 30 years of watching football. CMR should be embarrassed but doesn’t care.

3.) Is there anyone at UGA who can kick the damn ball into the endzone? UF has the best kickoff team in the country. UF can’t wait to play against our horrible ST’s.

The team that opens with the big play each quarter wins. The 1st quarter will be key though. If the dogs come out and score first (and score first in the 3rd), we win. What will it take? Our defense has to play as a unit. On offense we need to just pass for the first 9-10 plays, then open up the run on them.

Florida is playing well, but much of this team is the same group we lost in to in a close one two years ago and beat last year. Anyone that thinks we can’t beat these guys is, to steal an over-used phrase in these blog comments, “drinking the Kool Aid”. I’m just not sure our defense really cares. If they show up we win.

Special teams are MUCH better this year, only given up 1 td, and hit 80% of field goals.

Offense scorign a LOT more pts per game, and runnign the ball much better. Murray’s hit on 65% of passes, and ranks #7 in nation in passer effic.

Defense ranks #12 in nation in 2nd half pts allowed, which is all that counts. Defense improved there, and is only allowing 4.5 pts per game in the 4th quarter, BIG improvement. Defense is allowing 24 pts per game, as opposed to 22.1 per game in 2011, so I expect that to be comparable by the end of the season too.

Team is better everywhere.

Why isn’t Samuel the starting fullback? He will lay a hion you and try to open a hole. If you are going to run the I-formation, you have to have a good fullback. The one have now couldnt open a an of beans. With all the speed of Marshall and Gurley, why is almost every running play designed to run between the tackles? SELDOM they get a play designed to run outside the end. Another thing, I love our receivers, but do you think they could sustain a block for longer than a second? This line can’t open a hole inside and our receivers quit on their blocks. No downfield blocking at all. The linemen dont hustle down field to hit anyone past the line of scrimage.

Why cant the defense stop ANYONE runnng up the middle? John Jenkins for all his accolades hasn’t stopped anything up the gut (No Kentucky did NOT double teamhim that much either). Defense looks lost and hasnt contained even the worse teams offense (except Vandy), Lines on both sides of the ball stink, and just who is responsible?

I ramble, don’t expect a win against FL. I am hoping but………. looks bleak

UGA’s offense is MUCH better than UF’s.

UGA’s special teams are better than UF’s.

Defense are pretty much even, both are @ top 10 in nation in 2nd half and 4th qrtr scoring, which is how top defenses like LSU and Bama are measured.

UF isn’t as displined as UGA, very over-agressive, terrible in penalities, and look for UGA to burn UF on double moves, trick plays, variation snap counts, pre snap movement onn defense, etc. They are as UNDISCIPLINED as any team in the nation in penalties.

Dizzy, have you watched UGAs defense this year? UF’s D is so much better than UGA’s. I don’t care if the D is better in the 2nd half. If they give up 20 points in the first half, UGA will lose. UGA is so undisciplined on D. They are way overagressive, Jenkins gets pushed around by smaller linemen, Jarvis can’t stay on the field, Rambo looks like he doesn’t care, we can’t stop the run, etc, etc, etc. The list is too long to list everything. Our offense is great against terrible teams but can’t do anything against a decent defense. Murray will be running around trying not to get killed.

I’m not trying to be negative, but this team gives me no confidence. I hope I’m wrong, but it doesn’t look good for UGA this week.

Gonna be interesting; sure all of the “stats” point to UF being a lucky team, but this team is very tough, both emotionally and physically. Shut out A&M the 2nd half, shut out Tn the 2nd half, and almost shut out SC the 2nd half. The offense is bacisally unknown, the defense is stout and special teams near the top in every catagory. UGA wins only if they force Driskel into a bunch of dumb turnovers. UF wins if they keep Murray from going wild (over 300 yards).

On any given Saturday …. any team in the SEC can beat a fellow team in the SEC. Wake-up Georgia! You only have one loss and that is because you lost your top receiver. You may not think much of your team but coaches, press and the computers have your team ranked in the top 10. This wil be a smash mouth, in your face fight on the lines of scrimage. You’ve got a great quaterback, excellent running backs but your fan base has a defeatest attitude! The game of football is mental. You think you are gong to lose and you lose.

I’m a proud Gator who has seen Florida have the better team (1970s – 1980s) than Georgia only to see them lose to the Bulldogs because my team “just knew” that somehow, someway they were going to lose the game. My Dad (UGA ‘47) would be disgusted of what the Red and Black are saying about your team. Then comes Spurrier and you allow him to get into your head and its been downhill ever since!

Florida has had some lucky breaks go their way this season and we are ranked as high as we are because we were able to take advantage of our opponent’s mistakes. We have a special team but we will not know how special until the season ends. This year’s Florida-Georgia game is going to be a good, hard fought rivialry game. Either team can win this game and clinch the SEC East this year. But if you go into this game with a defeatest attitude, Georgia will lose. Your task, should you choose to do so is that everytime you see a player on your campus, encourage them to have the best game they possibly can have. Trust me, we are doing that to our players. Remember, this game and this rivialry is mental!

Come kickoff this Saturday, as a fan, I am bringing 150% positive energy for the Gators to beat the Dawgs. Hope the Red and Black will do the same!

Good Luck for a great game and may the best team win!

Go Gators!

All you have to do is read this and you will know what will happen in JAX. This is the difference in Alabama, Florida, Carolina and LSU and US! ho hum….excuse after excuse for just geting by a BAD KY team….should have blocked lower- not grab a face mask….Dummy Rambo still doesnt know that???????????????????????? KY is playing well……we caught them at home…..REALLY????? Are you kidding me??????????????? BS!

Georgia coach Mark Richt wasn’t complaining about a road win even in a game that was closer than expected.

“Very excited about the victory,” Richt said. “It’s great to be able to go on the road in the SEC and get the win. I think Kentucky did a fantastic job tonight. My hats off to coach (Joker) Phillips and his team but I’m also pleased with our team to do what they had to do to win the ballgame. A lot of big plays had to be made and then we had to play good down the stretch in order to win it. I’m very thankful and pleased with the victory.”

Asked if he expect the Bulldogs to be sharper coming off a bye week and with Kentucky struggling in a 49-7 loss to Arkansas the week before, Richt said: “I don’t know. Kentucky had time to get their plan together. They’ve got personnel. They do a lot of really good things. I have respect for what they have done in the past and how they played tonight. I think they have played a lot better at home then they have away. We caught them at home. We got a good SEC victory on the road. I think there’s a lot to be said for that.”

Some postgame items:

–Despite a four-touchdown passing game for Aaron Murray and a career-high 427 yards, there were some pass plays that got away. A wide open Marlon Brown dropped a pass inside the 10 yard-line in the first quarter on a deep ball. Bobo said Murray took two sacks “that I didn’t think he should have.”

–Kentucky rushed for 137 first-half yards.

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham didn’t like how Georgia handled third down runs and quarterback passes during a first half when the Widlcats converted 4 of 7 on third down.

“Third-and-7 or more the first four times of the game, they ran the ball,” he said. “You’ve got to play more physical than we did in that situation no matter what coverage you’ve got called. You shouldn’t give up 10 yards on a run.”

–All-American linebacker Jarvis Jones made the trip, but didn’t play due to a sprained ankle.

“It wasn’t precautionary,” Grantham said. “He couldn’t play. No.”

Richt didn’t want to blame Jones absence.

“It would be nice if Jarvis was back,” Richt said. “I’m not sure if he will be. He definitely could not have played tonight. We brought him on this trip just to get as much as rehab as we possibly could. We knew it was going to be a long day today so we had time to make sure he got some good treatment.”

Georgia also lost end Abry Jones early when he reaggravated a spained ankle. He may not go against Florida.

Safety Bacarri Rambo was banged up at end. “He sucked it up,” Grantham said.

Cornerback Sanders Commings also was banged up but returned after Devin Bowman came in.

–Georgia had personal fouls on Rambo (on a late hit out of bounds) and T.J. Stripling and a face mask penalty on Shawn Williams.

“You need to be a little bit lower in your tackles,” Grantham said of the facemask.

–Georgia used a combination with Mark Beard at left tackle and Kenarious Gates at left guard, but offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said it wasn’t because of injury.

“He deserved to play,” Bobo said of Beard.

–Georgia tried a fake punt in the third quarter with a direct snap to Malcolm Mitchell with fourth-and-on-1 at its own 46, but the 33-yard gain was wiped out by an illegal formation penalty and the Bulldogs punted.

“We were told that No. 38 Kosta Vavlas was basically a down lineman,” Richt said.

–Georgia had 77 rushing yards on 32 carries. Richt indicated the blocking from the line was the main issue

“We didn’t run the ball as well as I would hope,” he said. “Sometimes that’s an issue of a tight end or a fullback or a back not hitting it where he should hit it. Until I see the film I won’t be sure how well they did in the run game. My guess is there’s a little bit of everything.”

Where IS Richard Samuel, anyhow, and why do we give Ken Malcolme “garbage time” when it’s clear he’s the only RB we have that can run between the tackles? I love Gurley and Marshall, but they’re a lot like Samuel was as a freshmen – fast & nimble but tenuous to pop a defender and make more of a hole than the OL is giving them. It’s apparent our OL is mediocre, at best, against SEC-caliber defenses, so for my money, a fullback, two tights and Malcolme make the most sense…

…not only for offensive reasons, but to start controlling some clock and having our porous defense off the field as much as possible.

We have a great chance to beat Florida this weekend. All of the “fans” giving Georgia no chance would be right here next week talking about how great Richt is and how we might have a chance against Bama if we pull the game out on Saturday. Richt isn’t the problem, the Georgia fan base that can’t seem to remember the 90’s and how bad this program was is the problem. You all assume that firing Richt would mean we could get someone better, but who do you want? Unproven guys like Kirby Smart? Just remember the next time you start talking about coaching changes, that it can get worse. Just ask Auburn fans.

At least Grantham acknowledges problems. Other than Murray, the team was a mess.

Joey,
Mark Richt has won 74% of his games through his first 11 seasons in Athens, compared to Vince Dooley who won 65% in a much less competitive league. It took Dooley 16 years to win a national championship. If fans like you had their say back then, Dooley would have never won a National Championship at Georgia. And, in my opinion, the minute you fire Richt, he is the best coach without a job. Yes you are unproven before you become a head coach, but Georgia fans don’t want to wait 3 or 4 years for a rebuilding process. You guys would want to fire the new coach after 2 seasons if we aren’t going undefeated. Also, Florida fans were ready to fire Muschamp at this time last season, and they will be ready to fire him again if he loses to UGA and FSU this season. All I’m saying is that the grass isn’t always greener, and I wished that more fans could recognize that complaining about winning 10 games most seasons is a nice problem to have.

3 things scare me. 1)-Driskel can kill us with his legs. All year good running QBs drop back, see huge running lanes and take off running down field for big yards. 2)-Special Teams will play big in this one. Kyle Christy is the best punter in college football. He can flip the field and pin us deep all day. Because we have no special team stragtegy, CMR will send McGowan back to receive punts and he will fair catch all day. And overall special teams play will lack on the Dawgs part. Look for a couple of strips. 3)-Aaron Murray will come out over amped and make a couple of over throws and then lose confidence. Against Florida, he’s always good for a bonehead fumble and a couple of pick sixes. He tries so hard…to a fault.

Combine those 3 on-field problems with the coaching and we are looking at a long day in JAX. But the party will be fun.

Okie, Add the fact that our d-line is being bullied by teams like KY..imagine what Fla is going to do to them! Our O-line could barely handle KY, imagine what Fla’s D line is going to do to them!

I really really want to believe that the coaching staff will some how have these kids ready to play on Saturday, but I have seen zero evidence in the past 3 years to prove that it will happen.

The players on defense really need to decide whether or not they want to play. If players like Rambo, Commings, Smith, even Tree, have decided they want to save their bodies for the NFL, let them quit now so we can plug in players that actually give a damn.

If you live out West or up North and have watched Fla and UGA play all year, you would bet on Fla. Bi polar Dawgs are always a guess.

Jarvis had 4 sacks last year against UF… We don’t have a pass rush without him.

Biggest difference in this game Saturday will be the toughness and the physical nature of Florida vs this Georgia team. Florida handled LSU and Carolina pretty well.We struggle with Kentucky, physically and just winning. Don’t see it.

If the Dawg’s play against Florida like they played Vandy, I believe we can win on Saturday, I have not seen a team all year long beat Vandy like the Dawg’s, I don’t know what’s happen since the Vandy game, but they have yet to play a complete defensive game since we got the suspended players back, maybe its the injuries, but it seems like the chemistry on defense, has not been the same since Vandy. one thing’s for sure, I’m not going to come on a blog, and run my team down, or pull for them to lose, I don’t base my loyalty for UGA on win’s, its my home team, and I would pull for them even if they didn’t win a single game.

Happy you can be satisfied with the 10-win thing, JSAWGG.

Richt had a nice run through ‘05, but in ‘06 he started losing games by blow-out and it has kept getting worse. Now nearly every game vs quality teams ends in in ugly fashion – 3 of our 5 losses in the past 1.5 seasons has been embarrassingly one-sided blowouts.

You really think throwing out that winning % means anything, seeing how the last 4+ seasons have gone? Were you embarrassed by the SC game? The LSU game? The Boise game? What does that winning % do for what happened in those games?

In the South Carolina game they failed in every aspect and were out coached. After a week off, didn’t look good at all against Kentucky. Aaron Murray had a okay game but still hasn’t learned to avoid getting sacked. King had a game I’ve been waiting for him to have even if it did come against Kentucky but receivers still dropped to many passes. Defense acts if it’s lost it’s identity getting passed and ran on and did I mention they were playing Kentucky. Show up and play like that against the Gators and they will be Swamp Bait! The stars are aligned Dawgs so what’s it gonna be feast or famine, ruff ruff!
