Visit by LSU, return to Auburn highlight Georgia’s ‘13 schedule (updated)

By TIM TUCKER

Georgia’s 2013 football schedule restores South Carolina to a familiar early-season spot, includes a visit to Athens by LSU and — in an odd quirk — calls for the Bulldogs to travel to Auburn for a second consecutive season.

The SEC finally unveiled next season’s league schedule Thursday after spending many months sorting through the complexities of expansion to 14 teams. The league emphasized that next season’s schedule, like this season’s, is a transitional “bridge” and not a model for an ongoing rotation.

For Georgia fans, the 2013 schedule might be disconcerting: It is UGA’s first since 1957 without a home game against either Auburn or Georgia Tech, the Bulldogs’ two oldest rivals.

For more than a half-century, Georgia has hosted Auburn in odd-numbered years and Tech in even-numbered years. But the SEC said it shifted next season’s Georgia-Auburn game to Auburn “in order to maintain a balanced schedule for the 2014 season and beyond.” Two other games, Ole Miss at Alabama and Texas A&M at Ole Miss, also will be played at the same site this season and next.

“Repeat-venue games, while not desired, provided the only solution to the complex scheduling issues,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement.

The other thing that jumps out about Georgia’s 2013 schedule: It is tougher than this season’s and last season’s, both of which avoided the top SEC West teams.

After opening next season with a previously announced non-conference game at Clemson on Aug. 31, Georgia will start SEC play Sept. 7 in Athens against South Carolina. On Sept. 28, Georgia will host SEC West power LSU. Clemson, South Carolina and LSU are currently ranked among the nation’s top 14 teams.

Next season’s Georgia-South Carolina game will mark the 21st time in 22 years that the teams meet in their SEC openers. The exception was this season’s October meeting.

The Georgia-LSU game will be a homecoming for Zach Mettenberger, currently LSU’s starting quarterback and a former Georgia player. He grew up near Athens.

After the early-season gauntlet, Georgia’s remaining SEC games next season are Oct. 5 at Tennessee, Oct. 12 at home against Missouri, Oct. 19 at Vanderbilt, Nov. 2 against Florida in Jacksonville, Nov. 16 at Auburn and Nov. 23 at home against Kentucky.

In addition to the opener at Clemson, the previously announced non-conference schedule includes home games against North Texas (Sept. 21) and Appalachian State (Nov. 9) and the road game at Tech (Nov. 30).

Next season’s schedule is spread over 14 weeks. Georgia will have a bye week following the South Carolina game and another before the Florida game.

“The 2013 schedule will obviously be very challenging,” UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said in a statement. “Our No. 1 priority throughout this process was to protect our long-standing rivalry game against Auburn, and in order to keep this series intact, it necessitated a return to Auburn in 2013. We will start working on the 2014 rotating SEC schedule this spring, and we can confirm that Auburn will be returning to Athens in 2014.”

Beyond that assurance, the SEC described the ’13 schedule as “not based on any previous or future scheduling formats.”

Losing tons of talent on D. That is a good thing.

CMR is not he man to win big in the sec. Next year UGA will revisit the losing season of 09 and similar to 2010 and so, 2013 will be Richt’s last one.

UGA will have some issues in the coming 2 years but with the right staff, by 2015, UGA should be fine.

Mr. Richt has had 3 four year terms in Athens. Sorry to say if he survives 2012. He definately won’t survive 2013 with the poor coaching, weak leadership, and finesse offensives and under-achieving defensives.

Words are one thing, actions another. Mr. Richt tear down that wall.

To Kingdaddy

Saw somethimg about your mother was sick in the hospital. saw you were hurting. i found out my white male english bulldog named munson has cancer w/ only weeks to live. He looks just like the last couple of UGA’s. i know that doesnt compare to a human, but i thought i would send u a note about different types of sufferings we go through. football for me right now takes a backseat just because of a dog. cant imagine a mother involved. just when we feel sorry for ourselves, we see somebody else has it worse than us. Just let the dawgs do what they will this yr. and support them, NO MATTER WHAT, win or lose. focus on the end of the yr and what the holidays truly mean, happiness, love, health, family and a great country. If GA runs the table, even better!!!

Only question after reading this article is whether Mark Richt will be gone when the 2013 season kicks off or will this schedule be his undoing. Either way, he will not be coaching the Georgia Bulldogs in 2014. Expect UGA to finish at best 8-4 in 2013 although 7-5 is more likely. I am basing this on his refusal to bring in the assistants necessary to win the tough games. He needs help and simply cannot recognize it.

Thank you my friend. I talked eariler about our priorities being in the right order. Last year my girlfriend Mustang Sally lost her Pameranian to cancer on her gumline. We love our pets like family,so I understand your pain and wish your family strength and peace. My Mom’s 84 and ready to go see Dad, but I’m not ready to say goodbye yet. It puts a game of football in prespective when we measure it with things like family, making a living and helping those in need. Good luck my friend…

Rather play Auburn twice in Auburn than SC twice in Columbia. Cocks are not nearly as good on the road as at home, especially at night. LSU at home is nice too.

Clemson and SC first 2 games….who comes up with this stuff? Start on the ROAD this year with Mizzou, last year against top 5 team in the nation…..

You keep scheduling very tough opponents first game and you are gonna lose as many as you win….heck Vandy almost beat SC first game this year…players need a tuneup man before you go on the road then have a tough game the following week! ALSO SC can prepare SOLELY on UGA while UGA has to prepare for Clemson….sucks.

Overall the schedule isnt too bad considering LSU and SC are at home.

The Clemson game is the tough one being on the ROAD first game…..did i say SUCKS?

Bye before FL is sweet….playing Clemson and SC back-to-back to start the season…..SUCKS! Is this still Evans’ leftovers? It helps strength of schedule but it also increases chances of losing…..especially when you play tough games right off the bat.

“The Georgia-LSU game will be a homecoming for Zach Mettenberger,”

Don’t be so sure. Zach is fast proving to be a lot better at handling drunken coeds than a football. I’d say the position is wide open.

BadBadDog, can’t tell you how sorry I am to hear about your dog. I had to put Maggie, my 15 yo Golden Retreiver down 3 months ago and I truly feel you pain. Please do me a favor, don’t just take you dog to the vet. Maggie and Munson both gave us years of pleasure and would do anything to please us. So ask the vet to come to your house and put Munson down in your arms-he would never leave you alone on your death bed. Be stong my friend, Munson would be strong for you-God Bless

It must hurt not wanting to let go and say goodbye. I have yet to go through that w/ my parents yet. Im mid 40’s. they are late 60’s. I read these boards everyday for fun as a dawg fan. I love my team. I went to GA 21 yrs. ago. i have season tickets and go to the games. I get frustrated w/ the way they play, but I wont by any means shut the door on them.. this is a great fall hobby and pasttime my family & I enjoy no matter what. Hope better days are ahead…..Stay Strong….

Yeah. im hurting right now. real bad. a man I work with said the same thing you just said…Its not quite time yet, but its close. I live very very close to Athens. My vet is about 8 miles from my house. when its time, we have chosen a spot on our property next to where we have another family pet, another English Bulldog, buried. Our dog, Munson, will be right by us. How is it after 3 months?? Because right now, it is awful for our family.

Nothing like an outpouring of kindness from such good people as I’ve met on these blogs. Compassion is a virtue we must pass on to our children. My two boys have turned into fine men and now I’m a grand-dad. UGA fans make me very proud to be a Dawg. We get criticized by other fans, but then who doesn’t. Good sports take it as well as giving it. I learn something everytime I post. Good night Doggies…

It’s a good thing to see kingdaddy begin to back away and distance himself from CMR. That’s really good to see you showing Joey’s logical views respect instead of calling him a hater like you used to.

Hopefully kingdaddy can convince the other fellow coach MediocRe “dandies” like Dumb Dum IN Lex, MR goon stat boy “sammie”, Just not Sayin’ anything, and NonBrainiac to get off the pink pussy punch and distance themselves from Richt before the upcoming UF tragedy this blog will be a better place.

Because I promise you this blog is gonna explode like WW III for the MR sympathizers and apologist bastards if UGA gets routed in Jacksonville by UF !! A word to the wise is sufficient ! LOL ! Go Dogs, Not Richt !!
