South Carolina loss boosts Georgia’s chances in East

Georgia’s hopes of reaching the SEC Championship game despite its ugly loss at South Carolina got a boost Saturday night when the Gamecocks followed their domination of the Bulldogs with a loss at LSU.

South Carolina’s 23-21 loss, one week after its 35-7 rout of Georgia, means UGA will represent the Eastern Division in the SEC title game if:

  • South Carolina loses at least one of its three remaining SEC games, the most difficult of which is this week at Florida.
  • And Georgia beats its four remaining SEC opponents, including — most challengingly — Florida.

Those are big ifs, of course.

“Right now, I think the best thing for Georgia is to focus on getting better, focus on (this week’s opponent) Kentucky,” UGA coach Mark Richt said Sunday. “It’s kind of a boring answer, as always, but it’s really what we’ve got to do.

“We’ve got some things we’ve got to clean up. We’ve been giving up too many big plays. We’ve got to make sure we get back to running the ball like we (were) early in the year. … We need to get more turnovers. We need to protect the ball a little better. We’ve still got things to clean up in some of our special-teams areas.

“We want to finish strong, and if we can keep improving as we go, we’ve got a chance to have some fun in the end here. But we’ve got a ways to go.”

This past weekend’s results — South Carolina’s loss, Florida’s victory at Vanderbilt and Georgia’s bye — left the Gators (6-0, 5-0 SEC) alone in first place in the SEC East. South Carolina (6-1, 4-1) and Georgia (5-1, 3-1) are even in the loss column. All other East teams have at least three league losses.

Because of its loss to South Carolina, Georgia would lose a tiebreaker with the Gamecocks; that’s why Georgia needs them to lose again. If Florida beats South Carolina on Saturday in Gainesville but loses to Georgia on Oct. 27 in Jacksonville, that would leave the Gators and Bulldogs with one SEC loss each (provided UGA beats Kentucky) and the Dogs with the tiebreaker advantage over Florida.

Etc.

Richt took advantage of Georgia’s open date to watch his son play quarterback for Mars Hill (N.C.) College. Jon Richt set school single-game records for passing attempts (52), completions (33) and passing yards (370) as Mars Hill defeated Catawba 35-28. “I guess I can be a dad who can brag a little bit, but Jon played well,” Richt said. “It was the last time I’ll probably ever get to see him play college ball in person, so it was a treat for me and the family.” … Georgia’s 7 p.m. Saturday game at Kentucky (1-6, 0-4) will be televised on FSN, it was announced Sunday. … Georgia inched up one spot to No. 13 in this week’s Associated Press media poll and remained No. 12 in the USA Today coaches’ poll.

It’s tough when you have to depend upon others to make your season. The DAWGS are again simply pretenders. LSU got it done when it had to get done. Their defense is far superior to ours. UGA had no running game against SC. The best thing was that we were idle yesterday. Why are our 5 and 4 star athletes not as good as everyone else’s in the SEC?

The Gamecocks will lose at Florida, and at home to Arkansas and Tennessee. Hogs have had South Carolina’s number most years, and coming to Columbia and beating a top 10 team will be their bowl game. Tennessee’s getting better every week. We’ll be 9 weeks into the season before Cocks have to deal with a QB who can throw since UGA decided to choke in Columbia. Hogs and Vols won’t “choke” because they’ve got nothing to lose. October/November it’ll be the “Carolina Collapse.” So once again, the Dawgs can be the SEC East’s sacrificial lamb in Atlanta!

The dawgs have alot to work on, but it’s still the SEC, and it will be hard for any team to go undefeated, especially in the East.

Georgia needs to work on what they can control, and get better. Go dawgs!!!

The SEC is the toughest conference. One loss in this conference is no shame. Let any team try to run the table. Yes, we have poor coaching, but if our players play each game with heart, we will be fine. GO DAWGS!

Looks like another Outback Bowl this year…..lose most of good defensive players to NFL and the story continues as usual.

Until UGA makes a coaching change & reenergize the program outback bowl it will always be.

It’s pretty sad that the best Georgia can do is to hope and pray better teams lose so that they can win another empty crown of East division champions. Even if somehow they find their way to Atlanta, they will get beat down by Bama or LSU. And then Coach MediocRe can preach to his chorus about a 50 point loss is the same as a 1 point loss.

I suppose this is good news but I’m frustrated with the overall direction of the UGA football program. The results against ranked teams, the lack of emotion from the coaching staff, the talent we bring in yet somehow seem to falter in the end…..Somehow I think that considering the talent base we have and the resources we should be in the title mix every year instead of just talking about how good we think we’ll be this year!. Tired of being the 32 yr old sleeping giant!. Also tired of backing into the being called the SEC east champions…..For once I’d like to see my team earn it on the field!

We are going to go to Columbia and beat South Carolina then all we have to do is beat Florida and we are on the way to beat Bama and win the BCS.

Sounds stupid in retrospect, just like saying we can still win the east.

my bet, we lay an egg in Auburn. thats how bad our team is.

I watched the Florida-Vandy game last night. The Gators are thin in the D-line and didn’t appear as imposing after it lost some starters and back-ups.

The Florida QB is much more dangerous as a running than passer. Hope Grantham dials up the right answers for that!

Old Dawg…..

Don’t look too much into Florida’s performance up in Nashville. Has nothing to do with how they will play vs. SC and Georgia. Those are completely different type of games. Also…..Georgia’s performance against SC means nothing or reflects nothing on how they will do against Florida and anyone left on their schedule. But you better hope Florida does win Saturday afternoon…..I only wish the game could be played at night in THE SWAMP. I wish CBS would go against ABC at night because the SEC game would rule in that TV battle…..and they would increase their audience even more.

…..and Driskel can throw the ball…….but he really does not have any receivers he can trust to throw it to these days. Drops and wrong patterns all over the place. But Florida will be getting in some top, big receivers next year. Until then……Florida fans will settle for Driskel rushing for over 170 yards and multiple TDs in games…..or Gillislee doing it when teams put more focus on Driskel on the edge…..which makes Florida’s offense kind of scary. And Easley and Jacobs will be back for SC. So will Jelani Jenkins and so will James Wilson and Harrison on the OL. Florida was able to play without them on Saturday…..and win. And that is all Florida wanted to do Saturday….is win…..and….also….get people well for SC. They accomplished both.

If they can win in Jax then the monkey will be of the snide there (that will be two in a row for us) and we will have beaten a ranked team so off the snide there as well. Not saying it’s going to happen, but I like our chances. For those that want to belly ache everything then your not true Dawg fans. The SC game is over, we move on, It was one loss. And if we do lose and the Dawgs get through the backdoor (again) and win the east, you’ll be the first one to claim how great your team is by beating up on Ole Miss and Auburn. You’re the reason most SEC fans think of the Dawgs as a bunch of dumb rednecks! I can’t believe CMR is encouraged and says they have a lot to play for. He should be outraged at his coaching – to include both coordinators and especially himself for letting his team get embarrassed by SC on a national stage.

But this should not surprise us – just last year UGA played poorly against Boise State and SC and backed into the SEC East title. You hear CMR saying the same thing as last year and talks about how UGA can still win a SEC East title by waiting on SC to lose another SEC game.

As much as I want my Dawgs to win the SEC East, I am a realist. I have lost confident that CMR will beat FL and win all of the other SEC games. Maybe that’s a good thing – because I don’t want to see the Dawgs get dominated by Alabama on national TV.

Listen my fellow Dawg fans, and mark my words, CMR is a nice man and a nice Football coach, but he has peeked. He is doing the best he can, but as you see his best can’t get UGA in the National Championship picture.

At the end of the year, CMR should be thanked and honored for doing a nice job and allowed to retire – and his coordinators should be sent on. Then UGA should work hard to hire Chris Petersen, Boise State; Chip Kelly, Oregon; Gary Patterson, TCU; or give a good coordinator a chance like Kirby Smart, Alabama.

Richt will always win 9-10 games, but doesn’t have a disciplined team or creative offensive game plan to win it all. If this is what UGA wants, then they should stick with him. Otherwise, we should look hard for the next Spurrier or Saban.

If Georgia’s offense and defense play as uninspired against Florida as they did against USC East, then Florida will beat them unmercifully. What we need to see is Georgia go up to Lexington and dominate both sides of the line and beat Kentucky from the beginning of the game to the end. I don’t mean scoring 21 points int he fourth quarter for a 42 to 29 win, I mean have a 21 to 0 1st half and a 21 to 0 second half for a total dominating win. Anything else means trouble the next week.
