ATHENS – Everything was rosy with Georgia football until this past weekend when it ran into a buzz saw in South Carolina operating under the name of Gamecocks. Then the nation’s No. 5-ranked team, the Bulldogs fell behind 35-0 before scoring save-face touchdown in the game’s final minutes.
Now Georgia finds itself having to pick up the pieces. All the optimism the Bulldogs had gained in by annihilating their opponents by an average of 26.3 points in the first five games was wiped away in one nationally-televised butt-kicking.
Since that game, Georgia coach Mark Richt has anybody who would listen – including his own players — not to read too much into one lopsided loss. As ever, he believes the Bulldogs are still a top-tier team that can win the rest of its games and contend for the SEC championship
“Whether you lose by a point or you lose by 28 points, it’s only one loss,” Richt said this week. “It’s not five losses. It feels like three or four losses, but it’s only one. The way the world works in the Southeastern Conference is the team with the best record at the end wins the East. There’s a lot more football to be played. Let’s see how it shakes out.”
He chalks up South Carolina’s domination to “a perfect storm” of atmosphere and performance that was reminiscent of what the Bulldogs were able to do against Auburn in their first black-out game at Sanford Stadium in 2007.
“It was kind of a perfect storm for us that day, too, with the emotions of the fans, the excitement of the fans and the emotion of the players when we kind of sprung that thing on them,” Richt said. “They were just at an emotional peak. We had something big happen early and it snowballed for us that day.”
Georgia scored 25-unanswered points to win 45-20 in 2007. But, he said, the Bulldogs weren’t 25 points better than Auburn. Neither, he said, are the Gamecocks four touchdowns better than Georgia.
“This game was a little bit like that for South Carolina,” Richt said. “Momentum got grabbed and they just kept rolling. We had opportunities that might could have made a difference. The first pass of the game, if [Bacarri] Rambo squeezes the ball a little tighter and comes down with it, that’s a big momentum play for us. Maybe we turn around and score, I don’t know. But we just never got momentum going in our direction.”
Richt’s point is less about South Carolina and more about the rest of the season. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1 SEC) arrive at the halfway point still feeling like they’re a team that can fulfill all its goals from the outset of the season. As Georgia is off with a bye this week, here’s our assessment of what they’ve done so far:
OFFENSE
The South Carolina performance brought them down a notch, but it’s hard to deny what the Bulldogs have been able to do in the rest of their games. Georgia remains second in the SEC in scoring (41.3 ppg) and third in total offense (484 ypg)
It features an experienced quarterback in Aaron Murray, top-grade tailbacks in Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall and Ken Malcome fleet of proven wide receivers. The Gamecocks exposed Georgia’s weakness on the offensive line. But even with their failings in that game, the Bulldogs nine sacks allowed is fourth in the league.
“I think we’ll be fine,” said Murray, who “I thinknwe’re still very confident with who we have, with the play-calling and everything that’s going on. We just didn’t execute when the time came against South Carolina. There plays were there to be made; we just didn’t hit them. . . . I don’t think we’re shaken up at all.”
Assessment: Very good.
DEFENSE
This is the biggest mystery regarding the 2012 Bulldogs. They returned nine starters from a unit that finished fifth in the nation in total defense. Yet halfway through this season they’re ranked 51st in total defense, 68th against the rush and 79th in quarterback sacks. Worse, Georgia is giving up a lot of “explosive plays.” It has allowed 14 of 30 or more yards.
The easy answer is that Georgia had two starters out with suspensions the first four games and two others out for the first two contests. But Richt refuses to point to that.
“We don’t have any excuses,” he said. “We haven’t played as well. We’ve given up too many big plays. Some of it has been gap control; some of it has been communication on the back end. We’ve just got to get better.”
Third-year defensive coordinator Todd Grantham hasn’t been sharp in the area of game-planning. Ninety-four of the Georgia’s 135 points allowed – or 70 percent — have come in the first half, which suggests the Bulldogs haven’t been ready for what teams have thrown at them. However, with a 6.83 points second-half scoring average, Georgia is clearly making good halftime adjustments.
Assessment: Very average
SPECIAL TEAMS
Georgia is 91st in the nation in field goals at only .67 per game, but at the rate the Bulldogs have been scoring touchdowns (34), that isn’t necessarily been a bad thing. And when freshman Marshall Morgan has been asked to make a big kick, he has come through. Two of his four field goals (he has attempted only five) came from over 50 yards. However, Georgia has failed on three point-after attempts – two were plain missed – and have had three others bounce through off the upright.
Of course, special teams encompasses much more than placement kicks. The Bulldogs allowed a 70-yard punt return TD to South Carolina and are last in the SEC in net punting and punt return yardage allowed. But they’ve also blocked two punts and an extra point, snuffed out a fake punt and returned a kickoff for a score.
“The coaches are keeping us motivated,” said freshman Josh Harvey-Clemons, who was named the Bulldogs’ special teams captain for the Kentucky game. “We’re really emphasizing special teams a lot. We know how important it is to the game.”
Assessment: Decidedly average.
COACHING
Obviously Georgia wasn’t ready to play in the South Carolina game this past Saturday. The Bulldogs didn’t appear to have a specific plan for dealing with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney beyond letting tackle Kenarious Gates handle him and the defense was gashed with big plays early and could not contain quarterback Conner Shaw on the zone-read, option keeper.
That said, that was the second “game of the century” kind of atmosphere the Bulldogs faced this season. Missouri was eyeing its SEC opener versus Georgia as one of the most important in school history. And after last-season’s post-game run-in with Vanderbilt, this year’s game featured a highly-charged environment. The Bulldogs obviously handled those challenges with aplomb.
“Overall I think we’ve coached pretty well,” Richt said. “A lot of really good things have been happening. When you lose a game the way we did [to South Carolina] you start to evaluate everything and we have. . . . But I still think we have good coaches and good players. I think we’re still a very good team and the future is bright.”
Assessment: Decent
PROGNOSIS
The Bulldogs finish against Kentucky, Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. They’ll likely be favored against them all except for the No. 4 Gators on Oct. 27 in Jacksonville.
As such, Georgia is still very much in the SEC picture. If South Carolina loses two SEC games – the Gamecocks are on the road at LSU and Florida the next two weeks – the Bulldogs could regain control of the Eastern Division with a win over the Gators in Jacksonville. Should South Carolina beat LSU and lose to Florida, Georgia could forge a three-way tie at the same juncture.
“We’ve got an opportunity to get back on a winning track,” Richt said. “The best thing we can do is correct our mistakes. We had to assess some things we need to get better at. That’s what you do. . . . Hopefully we can go out and have a good performance against Kentucky and get our momentum going again.”

Just sick and tired of the status quo. UGA football needs a blood transfusion. This can be done with hiring new coaches. Richt looks tired and not concerned. Wish he would just step down.

“look at UF and Auburn as examples of win at all costs”
Not sure what you’re talking about with Florida. What have they done other than whip our azz that makes you say they are “win at all costs?” You sound like a Techie. If you can’t beat someone accuse them of cheating without any basis whatsoever to back it up. Pathetic. Whatever Florida is doing the answer is YES, that is absolutely what I want. Same with Bama. Same with LSU. Heck, go ahead and add South Carolina to that list. They beat a Top 5 team. When the hell is the last time we did that? Those teams are getting it done and we’re licking our wounds and playing shoulda, woulda, coulda about players needing to make plays like a second rate football program.
I’m afraid that people like McDawg and Sammy are the ones making all the tough decisions with our football program. I really am. There is no pressure on Richt. That is obvious. I am convinced he could really care less about all of our losses. He does nothing but rationalize all of them. His only stated goal in 12 years of coaching is to win the SEC East. That’s it. He doesn’t care if we have to back in. He’s intentionally avoided and danced around any national championship talk from day one, even going so far as to say at one point that its not really the goal. I remember the comment very well. He said that graduating players and building great young men is the goal. LMAO @ this guy. That’s what he’s getting paid millions for, to build great young men? He can do that on his own time. He can volunteer at the YMCA or Boys & Girls club or some crap. This is big time college football and his job is to WIN and WIN BIG. He just doesn’t get it. Go be a high school football coach if you’re so concerned about building young men and stop mooching off that $3 million salary. Good grief.
Thanks.

Did anyone else think that we played exactly the same way in the second half?? What the he– did our “coaches” talk about at half time? Did they consider going under center and using a full back, maybe putting a tight end in to help with the end rush, a screen pass or a slant across the middle, a bigger back in the back field to do nothing but block (pretty simple instructions, son # 7 is going to be right in your face as soon as the ball is snapped so try to slow him down a little) but no this game plan will work if we keep at it long enough. What a depressing sight, Spurrier coaching his a– off while leading 28-0 and CMR pushing his mike up to spit and rubbing his hair down. Good man or not, he is never going to be able to compete with the top level coaches in the SEC so 9-3 or 8-4 depending on schedule seems about the level for us. I love my Dawgs but refuse to spend any more time or money going to see these kinds of displays.

Chip, you rated the Coaching “decent”? Really?
Note also that Coach Richt is quoted as saying “…we just never got momentum going in our direction.” I disagree with that assessment. UGa had momentum from the first series, but it wasn’t the kind of momentum that causes good things to happen on the field. That sucking sound you heard from our sidelines simply got louder as the game continued. This team wasn’t prepared to play in a big game, which has been a chronic problem in recent seasons, and the momentum that they had was the kind that leads to bigger deficits piling up quickly. A coaching staff that had a clue might have made a few well considered adjustments during the game, but there wasn’t much evidence of that happening.
I can’t believe that the underperformance during the games against higher quality competition is entirely the fault of UGa’s coaching staff, however. This team, like those of the past few years, does not seem to have leaders on the field. Recall that in Richt’s first few years on the job, David Greene and David Pollack led by example on the field, helping the other players play at a higher level. If anyone who has watched this year’s team more closely than I have been able to so far will tell us who the team’s leaders are, I’ll appreciate your helping us out here. If Aaron Murray is all you have to offer, I will consider my point confirmed.

What we learned…
Buffalo – Nothing
Missouri – Mizzou was overrated
FAU – Nothing
Vandy – Maybe UGA is good.
Tenn – Maybe UGA is overrated.
SC – Yep UGA is once again not a contender
Once again never coaching players “up.” We will win 10 or 11 games on talent alone which is par for the course with Richt.

If South Carolina beats L.S.U. and Florida then the South Carolina lose by the Dawgs doesn’t look so bad but Georgia must beat Florida and win all the rest of their games. Nobody can criticize Georgia for losing to a top 3 or 4 team and if South Carolina was to win the SEC this year then Georgia would have lost only to the future National Championship. Let’s wait and see how this plays out we could still end up in the top 5 or 6 at the end of the year. Take it out on Kentucky and then beat Florida .

Damon Evans had this program going in the right direction by scheduling tougher out of conference teams (Oregon, Arizona State, Boise State, Okla St, etc). Mcgarity came in & changed that strategy.
If you play ranked teams on a regular basis you build player & program confidence. Alabama, LSU, Oregon, USC, & all of Pac-12 teams have proved it to be true!!
If you keep playing Buffalo, FAU, GA Southern, UAB, etc you will eventually lose your edge & become soft & mediocre!! That’s exactly what the bulldogs have become. MEDIOCRE!!

Dawgsgone, you’re spot on in your assesment of x’s and o’s but none of that matters when the players don’t have the fire and passion to compete at a high level because their coach doesn’t put winning as the top priority. We can talk about startegy until we’re blue in the face but as long as coach valum is steering the ship our players will never have that burning desire to win the big games. I mean the guy actually said he told the players ” well at least we got our butts whipped together”. What the fuk does that mean exactly? I can see them now all gathering around after the game doing a big ole group hug. Geez, why can’t the blind richt apoligist see the light?

This is my first post. Been a Ga fan my whole life and saw many years of Getting our A$$ kicked between Dooley and Coach Richt. Clearly too many dog fans get their self worth, value, and happiness from how Ga does on any given Saturday. The truth is that we have been blessed with many years of Ga football being relevant and competitive. Coach seems to be a man of good character and a person who cares about his players beyond them being athletes. Let us all take a moment and apprciate what we have and stop placing too much value on a game. I was devastated by the loss to SC but my children are healthy and my life remains one of quality. Show some maurity and respect for the efforts of these “kids” and the hard work that is put forth by the coaches. Support the team and focus on improving your own existence by being a positive example for you kids.

I do hope that Murray will not return for one more year. We need a taller Quarterback who can complete one of the most important plays for an offense, THE SCREEN PASS. I would really like anyone to tell me what percentage of Murray’s screen pass attempts have been completed over the last three years. It would amaze some to know it is probably less than 20%. These are passes that have been completed behind the line and throwing the ball sideways to the sideline doesn’t count. I am talking about dumping the ball off to a running back after he has blocked.

You Richt/Bobo supporters are ridiculous! “It’s just one loss!” No, it’s the pathetic record of 2-14 against ranked teams. I can accept loosing when the team shows up and just gets beaten by a better team. But consistently getting blown out and embarrassed every year on a national scale is not acceptable any longer. Did you not hear the guys on ESPN talk about our coaching staff? Even they were saying how embarrassed they would be if they were a UGA fan. Bobo is absolutely clueless what to do when his game plan falls apart. He instantly falls back to his conservative, vanilla plays that everyone can see a mile away. Even my wife who knows nothing about football asked “why does he keep running the ball up the middle? It hasn’t worked one time the entire game. Why is the quarterback holding the ball so long?” Where was the screen pass? Where were the slants? Absolutely clueless. We will never win big games with these coaches. You people seem to be ok beating cupcake teams and being embarrassed year after year. I’ve been a supporting the Dawgs for 40 years and I have never been embarrassed like I was Saturday night. Seeing that stupid grin on Spurrier’s face was bad enough but then to see Richt smiling and acting like the loss was not big deal was nauseating! “Golly gee, we just got whipped.” “Overall I think we’ve coached pretty well,” Richt said. WHAT A JOKE!!

We were manhandled on both sides of the ball….and special teams. The only reason we scored at all was b/c South Carolina pulled all their starters on D late in the 4th quarter.
Don’t come with the same excuses when Florida, in it’s second year of the Muschamp era, manhandles us as well.

CMR: OK, gentlemen, let’s make it quick, I’ve got to get over to the Ramsey Center for a diving exposition. You go first CMB
CMB: The big matchup problem is with Clowney. We’ll have the linemen and RBs dive at his feet thereby confusing him so much that he will run away!
CMR: I like your style, Bobo. What about Murray?
CMB: We all know what a big-game QB he is, just let him do his thing!
CMR: Agreed. OK CTG you’re up.
CTG: Well, this week we’ve decided not to take away the pass or the run. They will become so confused, they will simply hand us the ball back.
CMR: That’s never been tried before! Brilliant!
CMB: What about punt coverage
CMR: I’m not familiar with the concept but I don’t want to take focus away from the complexities of the game plan so let’s keep it simple.
CMB: What about the atmosphere and crowd noise.
CMR: I’d be surprised if their fans were into the game. It’s so late at night, most of them probably will wonder off by game time.
CMB: Ok, hadn’t really thought of that. I guess that’s why you’re the head coach and I’m not.

UGA folds in big games, because those teams have ver physical LOS and UGA LACKS the same. THS is a philosophica divide between Richt and the UPPER TIER SEC coaches.
THIS is the core reason that UGA loses to OK State, Michigan State, U of Cental Florida, Colorado and LSU, Boise, Alabama and UT , few years back and to SC the other night.
THIS IS FAULT of POOR LOS recruiting. CMR is the culprit,
sanctions aren't working

I don’t think Holgerson will leave WVU to come to Athens. The route to the NatChamp game is alot simpler thru the Big 12 than the SEC. 9 or 10 win seasons will get him lifetime contract in Morgantown. It apparently gets you the same contract at UGA.

Let me start off by saying this, “I’m a season ticket holder, and I bleed RED and BLACK.” I have a couple of complaints to get off my chest. First of all, the USC game was very hard to watch, but don’t forget their fan base. They had that shat hole stadium rocking, with their glow stick music. I’ve attended many UGA football games were the coaches and player have to make fans stand up. The players feed off of us, THE FANS. Most of you so called UGA supporters are sitting around, as if you’re watching a freaking tennis match. CMR has shown more emotion than usual ie… Mizzou game. He’s been waving his arms up and down trying to get the fans envolved. Does he need to get in a kids face to make some of you happy. Maybe so, but I guarantee when he does someone will say, “He shouldn’t act that way.” Second, how is it CMR’s fault when a player decides to smoking pot, carrying a firearm, or getting a DUI. I guess you never participated in those type of activity, in COLLEGE. The players have to learn how to be responsable, for their own actions. No one forced them to do any of the above, and the APD doesn’t help out either. They are so quick to bust one of our guys. You don’t see this happening at other universities. However, I guess that’s all CMR’s fault too.Third, I’m so sick
and tired of these fare weather fans on message boards, twitter, and facebook posting negative information about UGA. Get a grip, our recruits are reading what’s being posted.
Which gives other schools the edge, and makes them rethink their commitment to the “G”. Then some of you ADULTS bash kids, for opening their recruitment and committing elsewhere. Also, our current players read your comments as well, and they feel as if we don’t care! I’m human, so I have some of the same concerns as most of you. The difference between myself and you, is that I don’t post my negativity on public social media boards. With all of this being said you can take it how you want, but I’m 100% committed to the “G”, and our guys that wear the RED and BLACK. Now ask yourself, “Are you really committed to the G”.

I hope it makes you happy, when some of our 5-4 star recruits go elsewhere, due to fans such as yourself. Then you’ll really be on here crying your eyes. If you think you can fix the problem, why are you not coaching?

No. I sat in front of the TV and told my wife before the game started that we would lose by two touchdowns and of course I underestimated our coaching staff’s ineptitude. You see, I have seen this act before as many of the intelligent and justified Richt detractors have and we are thankfully smart enough not be fooled once again like the pollyanna Richt koolaid cheering section. And why would I worry about highly ranked recruits when all the smart fans know they will come here and get coached “down” and never live up to expectations. I want a winner on the field in the fall not a paper tiger champion in february.

Dalton Dawg – First off, awesome spelling! That Dalton education is doing wonders for you. Second, it’s idiots like you that keep talking about being “Committed to the G” and saying that others are not real fans because they are not ok with being embarrassed year after year on a national scale that keep Richt and Bobo at UGA. Being 2-14 against ranked teams since 2008 must be acceptable to you but it’s certainly not to me. Bobo is absolutely clueless what to do when his game plan falls apart. He instantly falls back to his conservative, vanilla plays that a high school team can spot a mile away and stop. You are ok with that? You are ok with him running up the middle over and over for no gain instead of having the ability to make adjustments as needed? You are ok with a coach that goes on tv after a humiliating loss like last weekend and not even seeming upset about it? “Golly gee, we just got whipped.” That is not ok to me and certainly shouldn’t be to anyone who loves the Dawgs. I’ve been bleeding red and black for over 40 years now and am not ok with 2 – 14. It’s time for a change people.

Richt is my favorite sec coach, and I hope you keep him for years to come.

I have to finally comment on the poor writing/editing I have witnessed in the last year here at the AJC. This paper is not the only one but, of the ones I read, it is by far the worst. There are at least 3 or 4 instances in this piece alone of words missing and there others are simply misspelled. I am going to guess that this is an issue with deadlines and cutbacks to staff editors but at least the writers themselves can try and do a better job of putting out a professional product. This goes for all the writers not just the sports section. Oh, and let’s just call it like it is about UGA football: I’ve been saying it for 2-3 years now: Richt has been passed by; we are no longer competitive against anyone who is decent in the SEC. I think our AD realizes that and this is the last year.

When Dooley retired, Georgia became a soft team. Prior to his retirement 90% of the games he won were 3 yards and a cloud of dust and then he won in the 4th quarter by wearing the other team down now————- not so much.
Here’s the really bad news, Muschamp read Dooley’s book anf the Gators have not been scored on in the 4th quarter and only 13 total points in the 2nd half. Jax is going to brutle for the dawgs. The softness will be exposed.

The SC game was a poorly coached game! There was a bit of intimidation due to the fan base and hype. Let’s remember the SC games in the beginning of the season. SC 17 Vandy 13! Vandy by 4 points? National Championship contender? Then UAB, Missouri and Kentucky now those are no brainers. I watched the SC Kentucky game and in the first half SC looked terrible. LSU, Florida, Tennessee or Clemson could easily trip up SC. I am a UGA fan but both Mark Richt and Steve Spurrier both lack the killer instinct. BTW I do not think UGA will pull out a win against Florida. Florida has seen how to shut UGA down —- noise and score first and they will lay down. Even if UGA wins out it will be another SEC Championship game like last year a blow out.
