ATHENS – Everything was rosy with Georgia football until this past weekend when it ran into a buzz saw in South Carolina operating under the name of Gamecocks. Then the nation’s No. 5-ranked team, the Bulldogs fell behind 35-0 before scoring save-face touchdown in the game’s final minutes.
Now Georgia finds itself having to pick up the pieces. All the optimism the Bulldogs had gained in by annihilating their opponents by an average of 26.3 points in the first five games was wiped away in one nationally-televised butt-kicking.
Since that game, Georgia coach Mark Richt has anybody who would listen – including his own players — not to read too much into one lopsided loss. As ever, he believes the Bulldogs are still a top-tier team that can win the rest of its games and contend for the SEC championship
“Whether you lose by a point or you lose by 28 points, it’s only one loss,” Richt said this week. “It’s not five losses. It feels like three or four losses, but it’s only one. The way the world works in the Southeastern Conference is the team with the best record at the end wins the East. There’s a lot more football to be played. Let’s see how it shakes out.”
He chalks up South Carolina’s domination to “a perfect storm” of atmosphere and performance that was reminiscent of what the Bulldogs were able to do against Auburn in their first black-out game at Sanford Stadium in 2007.
“It was kind of a perfect storm for us that day, too, with the emotions of the fans, the excitement of the fans and the emotion of the players when we kind of sprung that thing on them,” Richt said. “They were just at an emotional peak. We had something big happen early and it snowballed for us that day.”
Georgia scored 25-unanswered points to win 45-20 in 2007. But, he said, the Bulldogs weren’t 25 points better than Auburn. Neither, he said, are the Gamecocks four touchdowns better than Georgia.
“This game was a little bit like that for South Carolina,” Richt said. “Momentum got grabbed and they just kept rolling. We had opportunities that might could have made a difference. The first pass of the game, if [Bacarri] Rambo squeezes the ball a little tighter and comes down with it, that’s a big momentum play for us. Maybe we turn around and score, I don’t know. But we just never got momentum going in our direction.”
Richt’s point is less about South Carolina and more about the rest of the season. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1 SEC) arrive at the halfway point still feeling like they’re a team that can fulfill all its goals from the outset of the season. As Georgia is off with a bye this week, here’s our assessment of what they’ve done so far:
OFFENSE
The South Carolina performance brought them down a notch, but it’s hard to deny what the Bulldogs have been able to do in the rest of their games. Georgia remains second in the SEC in scoring (41.3 ppg) and third in total offense (484 ypg)
It features an experienced quarterback in Aaron Murray, top-grade tailbacks in Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall and Ken Malcome fleet of proven wide receivers. The Gamecocks exposed Georgia’s weakness on the offensive line. But even with their failings in that game, the Bulldogs nine sacks allowed is fourth in the league.
“I think we’ll be fine,” said Murray, who “I thinknwe’re still very confident with who we have, with the play-calling and everything that’s going on. We just didn’t execute when the time came against South Carolina. There plays were there to be made; we just didn’t hit them. . . . I don’t think we’re shaken up at all.”
Assessment: Very good.
DEFENSE
This is the biggest mystery regarding the 2012 Bulldogs. They returned nine starters from a unit that finished fifth in the nation in total defense. Yet halfway through this season they’re ranked 51st in total defense, 68th against the rush and 79th in quarterback sacks. Worse, Georgia is giving up a lot of “explosive plays.” It has allowed 14 of 30 or more yards.
The easy answer is that Georgia had two starters out with suspensions the first four games and two others out for the first two contests. But Richt refuses to point to that.
“We don’t have any excuses,” he said. “We haven’t played as well. We’ve given up too many big plays. Some of it has been gap control; some of it has been communication on the back end. We’ve just got to get better.”
Third-year defensive coordinator Todd Grantham hasn’t been sharp in the area of game-planning. Ninety-four of the Georgia’s 135 points allowed – or 70 percent — have come in the first half, which suggests the Bulldogs haven’t been ready for what teams have thrown at them. However, with a 6.83 points second-half scoring average, Georgia is clearly making good halftime adjustments.
Assessment: Very average
SPECIAL TEAMS
Georgia is 91st in the nation in field goals at only .67 per game, but at the rate the Bulldogs have been scoring touchdowns (34), that isn’t necessarily been a bad thing. And when freshman Marshall Morgan has been asked to make a big kick, he has come through. Two of his four field goals (he has attempted only five) came from over 50 yards. However, Georgia has failed on three point-after attempts – two were plain missed – and have had three others bounce through off the upright.
Of course, special teams encompasses much more than placement kicks. The Bulldogs allowed a 70-yard punt return TD to South Carolina and are last in the SEC in net punting and punt return yardage allowed. But they’ve also blocked two punts and an extra point, snuffed out a fake punt and returned a kickoff for a score.
“The coaches are keeping us motivated,” said freshman Josh Harvey-Clemons, who was named the Bulldogs’ special teams captain for the Kentucky game. “We’re really emphasizing special teams a lot. We know how important it is to the game.”
Assessment: Decidedly average.
COACHING
Obviously Georgia wasn’t ready to play in the South Carolina game this past Saturday. The Bulldogs didn’t appear to have a specific plan for dealing with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney beyond letting tackle Kenarious Gates handle him and the defense was gashed with big plays early and could not contain quarterback Conner Shaw on the zone-read, option keeper.
That said, that was the second “game of the century” kind of atmosphere the Bulldogs faced this season. Missouri was eyeing its SEC opener versus Georgia as one of the most important in school history. And after last-season’s post-game run-in with Vanderbilt, this year’s game featured a highly-charged environment. The Bulldogs obviously handled those challenges with aplomb.
“Overall I think we’ve coached pretty well,” Richt said. “A lot of really good things have been happening. When you lose a game the way we did [to South Carolina] you start to evaluate everything and we have. . . . But I still think we have good coaches and good players. I think we’re still a very good team and the future is bright.”
Assessment: Decent
PROGNOSIS
The Bulldogs finish against Kentucky, Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. They’ll likely be favored against them all except for the No. 4 Gators on Oct. 27 in Jacksonville.
As such, Georgia is still very much in the SEC picture. If South Carolina loses two SEC games – the Gamecocks are on the road at LSU and Florida the next two weeks – the Bulldogs could regain control of the Eastern Division with a win over the Gators in Jacksonville. Should South Carolina beat LSU and lose to Florida, Georgia could forge a three-way tie at the same juncture.
“We’ve got an opportunity to get back on a winning track,” Richt said. “The best thing we can do is correct our mistakes. We had to assess some things we need to get better at. That’s what you do. . . . Hopefully we can go out and have a good performance against Kentucky and get our momentum going again.”

Losing twice (against LSU and UF)? Might happen, but if it does it means that UF is in Bama’s league and will physically destroy UGA. Wakeup Rip Van Winkles, your season is done.

Yeah buddy. I bet they have. They probably huddled in Richt’s office, blamed the players’ execution, patted each other on the back, and evaluated their 50% PAY-RAISES coming in January . . .

The great Vince Dooley vs Richt in Bowl games.
Dooley: 8-10-2 In 15 of 20 games, Georgia scored 20 or less, 75%, and 9 times held to 10 or less. Went 1-4 in the Sugar Bowl, had 3 blowout losses, 6-45 Nebraska, 10-31 Arkansas, 3-27 Pittsburgh, also lost 10-21 to Miami of Ohio. Only Georgia coach with a losing Bowl record, Dooley. Butts 5-2-1, Goff 2-2, Donnan 4-0. In 13 of 25 years, Georgia not ranked in Top 20.
Richt: 7-4 In 9 of 11 games scored 24 points or more, 81%. 2-1 in Sugar Bowl. The 4 losses were by 3,4,3,4.
Really now, if Dooley could last 25 years with that record without getting fired, why would anyone think that UGA demands excellance?

Someone please tell Richt that he doesnt get paid to “turn the other cheek”. As a life long Dawg I am more dissapointed in our fans and alumn for putting up with this guy. He should have been gone three years ago. LSU, Bama and UF simply dont put up with middle of the road teams. And dont tell me to look at UT and whats going on there. At least they knew they had to make a move. Yes all coaches dont work out but they will eventualy get the right guy in there because they too have standards higher than ours. 1. As I recall, Bear Bryant didn’t fare well in his 7th to 11th seasons as a Head Coach.
2. Mark Richt has a better win % than Saban or Spurrier.
3. Mark Richt had a better win % vs. ranked teams in his first 5 seasons at UGA (.670) than Saban (.600) or Spurrier (.250) or Miles(.600) has had at Bama, LSU or SC in their first 4 or 5 years. My bet is in year 11 at their schools, teams will adjust to what Saban, Miles and Spurrier are doing, if they’re still around.
4. Spurrier has a history at South Carolina of starting strong, and fading down the stretch, he tends to put everything on the line too early in the season, and his guys run out of gas as the season rolls on. Look for him to finish no better than 10-2.
5. UGA should handle Florida by: running Murray more on pass plays, keeping in 2 tight ends to help the oline, going wiht Malcome/Samuel for better passblocking on obvious passplays, throwing to the backs, and on defense moving to the 4-3 to stop the run, not letting the QB scramble, forcing the rb inside, getting more pressure on the QB with new defensive ends like Stripling or Drew or Smith–no way Grantham stays with Jones & Washington, and keeping 2 safeties deep.
6. If UGA kicks the punt out of bounds, Rambo picks Shaw’s pass, and score from the 1 yard line, it’s tied at halftime 7-7. Those 3 plays hurt, but do not mar the whole season. Easily corrected by not punting to playmakers, 2 deep safeties, and throwing more in the red zone.

HEY DAWG FANS. I know you don’t want to admit this, but 14 of the 15 offensive linemen for Tennesee, South Carolina and Florida are black athletes. Since these coaches have shown the necessary GUTS to commit to this type of athlete, it’s now SAFE for Richt to do the same. It would have been nice for UGA to “LEAD THE WAY” in this transition, but when’s the last time that’s happened!? Now that it’s safe for Richt, he should feel comfortable in moving Burnette to center (in the name of all that is holy Richt, DO IT NOW!), Mike Thornton to Burnette’s spot at right guard, Mark Beard and Kenarious Gates on your left side. And most importantly, XZAVIER WARD for “Molasses” Theus. Can you imagine “GURSHALL” running behind this group. You couldn’t be stopped! Then, turn Shamire Devine and Jeremi Hall from Tech, Turn Octavious Jackson from Florida. Sign Joshua Outlaw and Devonte Seymour, and move John-John Atkins to center to replace Burnette when he leaves. Then off you go. National Titles await. But it takes GUTS to do this, and Richt doesn’t have enough. Plus, it would monumentally upset you guys, the UGA FAN BASE. So, it ain’t gonna happen. What is gonna happen, is that you guys are going to go another year without the ring. What is it 32 years now? Geez.

I am bothered by the way that CMR is rationalizing the loss to South Carolina. I get that its only one loss, that it was the biggest game that South Carolina has ever played in, their stadium was charged, it was arguably the third emotionally charged game Georgia played in this season and second on the road, etc., but it was a humiliating loss! Just as concerning is I don’t like that CMR refuses to admit that he and the coaching staff didn’t have the team prepared. Its pretty obvious that they didn’t have a plan to deal with their D-line, couldn’t quiet the crowd, etc. I think that CMR could quiet the critics and gain a lot more respect from the Dawgnation if he’d simply admit that he and the staff failed in their preparation and forcefully tell the Dawgnation that as a staff, players, etc. IT WON”T HAPPEN AGAIN PERIOD. Losses are certainly a possibility but when you look that inept and unprepared, trying to rationalize the situation is not the correct approach. Had they lost a closely contested game, that’s a different story.

I’m sure that they know and recognise all the deficiencies in the program, it’s pretty hard to fix them in season with not much time to practice. This is college afterall. They are young people, they are affected by going on the road in tough environments. Coaches head coaches anyway with lots of experience don’t typically make statements like “It won’t happen again” because it happens frequently to this team. They’ve made changes, it’s just not enough yet.
The recruiting of the line of scrimmage has been abysmal in the past, and then they’ve had some injuries, They’ve got a lot of good freshmen on this team and they will be better in the future, but the schedule may not hash out in thier favor either.
Perhaps, the state of Georgia really is cursed.

No revisionist history, we had a bad 3 plays in the first half at South Carolina. The offense moved the ball to the 1 yardline, but got too conservative there. Rambo didn’t squeeze the ball hard enough on his pick and was stripped, and then you don’t punt to Ace Sanders any more than you don’t punt to HoneyBadger.
It wasn’t a bad firsthalf, it was a bad 3 plays.
All 3 plays can EASILY be corrected.
1- For deep balls, throw 2 safeties back there like the Tenn game, don’t get beat deep, and pick off 2 or 3 balls. 2 on 1 works a lot better on deep balls and it worked against the best pass offense UGA will face.
2- Just stop punting the ball to returners, kick em out of bounds until we hire a Special Teams coach in the off-season.
3- Have a bunch of plays ready for goalline if the run isn’t working, go play-action, or run a pick play to a receiver. Play action then Bootleg Murray with a run pass option. Use some trick plays–go Boise.
Clowney should have been double or triple teamed. That’s easily corrected if Florida has a dominant dlineman or OLB.
3 bad plays in the first half, poor execution, Rambo was in the right place, just couldn’t execute. OLine on the goalline calls were right, just missed blocks, and punter just didn’t get hang time and didn’t kick it out of bounds.
2nd half got beat on a deep ball, 2 deep safeties fix that.
Fix those things, and you beat Florida.

Murray’s decision to throw over the middle deep on his own side of the field, risking an int or tipped pass, was a bad one.

I think right I’m rooting for one of the two scenarios. First: SC loses to both LSU and Florida, we pull off our typical pull-from-behind win against Florida, win the East and then… well, we won’t talk about what’ll happen in the SEC championship game… and then we can claim another East title.
Second, SC beats LSU, hopefully beats Florida and TN and they, I think, have a real shot at beating Alabama and could maybe even go to the national championship game. That’d make things look a lot better for the Dawgs if we lost to such a powerhouse.
I’m afraid that its not going to go down that way. SC will lose 1 SEC game or will lose 2 and we’ll lose to Florida and it’ll just be one of those years where we have a great record only because we didn’t win against anyone tough. We have the 48th toughest schedule versus SC’s 8th toughest and Florida’s 2nd toughest.

A lot of the opnion of this season ultimately can fall on Mcgarity as well. When you schedule a lot of hot garbage in the non conference and there are very few prime matchups in a season, you have to win those games. Otherwise you will end up what they’ve had the last 2 years.
Hollow records. It’s Penn Stateesque, schedule a bunch of garbage to make a bowl get to 10 wins and a decent bowl game, but never play for anything meaningful.
Coach Richt has done an excellent job representing the university, but I’m not sure I believe he will ever put a team together that will challenge for anything more than an SEC title.

Richt’s aware of the big 4 mistakes UGA made in the first half, did you read the article, here’s what Richt said
“The best thing we can do is correct our mistakes. We had to assess some things we need to get better at. That’s what you do”
1- Richt’s admitting mistakes
2- Richt’s assessed where we need to get better at
Like I said 4 mistake sin the first half cost us:
1- Missed int by Rambo (ended up scoring 7 on drive)
2- Int by Murray (ended up scoring 7 on dirve)
3- Punt return (ended up scoring 7 on punt return)
4- UGA stopped at goaline (cost us 7 points)
If you want to add in a 5th mistake, we got beat on a deep ball in the 2nd half.
These are easily corrected by:
1) 2 deep safeties
2) Murray throwing to outside or long balls only deep in own territory
3) Kick punts out of bounds
4) Have a better set of plays for inside the 5 yardline on offense

When they finally played a real team they folded like a cheap lawn chair. CMR is a good man, but not a good leader of men. Make him team chaplain and pay him $30,000/year and hire someone who can HC. And could someone please tell me what Grantham is doing? UGA gave up a total 79 pts in two games! What is this, the freakin WAC?!?! My grandmother could take this team with this schedule and go 5-1! Yeah Sammy, its all Murray’s fault. That’s the ticket. It was his fault that Clowney and the other guy are like 8 feet tall and Bobo had absolutely no plan whatsoever to deal with it. It was his fault that South Carolina’s D-line was getting a 2 yard push on our soft O-line on almost every play. What planet are you on kid?
What should be the most disturbing thing about the South Carolina loss is that they did exactly what everyone expected them to do and our coaching staff had absolutely no plan to deal with it. Everyone knew they had two monster D-ends that could cause problems. Everyone knew they were going to key on the run and jam our recievers at the line of scrimmage. Everyone knew it was going to be a hostile environment and a charged atmosphere. Everyone knew that Connor Shaw could cause problems with his ability to run. There were no surprises in this game. South Carolina didn’t pull any tricks on us. The prognosticators were saying all this crap all week. Here we are a supposedly Top 5 team and our coaching staff had absolutely no effing clue how to deal with any of this. None whatsoever. I don’t even think Richt cares all that much. He’s a half azzed coach content with backing in to the SECCG about once every 5 years. That’s the bottom line.

The difference is how the team (and coaches) respond to those plays. We didn’t respond. Richt curled up on the floor like a 3 year old and was Spurrier’s punk accepting everything The old bawl sack gave him. The Bulldogs were lifeless, clueless and uninspired.
