ATHENS – The performance of Georgia’s offensive line – and its tackles in particular — against South Carolina this past weekend was one the Bulldogs would just as soon forget. In fact, that seems to be one of their primary goals this week.
“That game’s over,” freshman tackle John Theus said. “We looked at the film and we learned from it and we’re ready to go on to the next game. We’ve all moved on. We’re preparing for Kentucky now.”
On paper, it doesn’t look as bad as it was. Officially the Gamecocks were credited with two quarterback sacks and two quarterback hurries. But anybody who watched this past Saturday’s 35-7 domination of Georgia knows defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Devin Taylor had a much more profound effect on quarterback Aaron Murray and the Bulldogs’ offense.
Murray had career lows with 35 percent completion rate on 11-of-31 passing for 109 yards. The Gamecocks were credited with 10 pass break-ups, several of them occurring nanoseconds after the ball left Murray’s hands.
The end result was the Bulldogs were held to 41 points below their scoring average and 312 yards below their yards per game.
“It’s just one of those games you have to throw it in a bag and move on and focus on our next opponent, which is Kentucky,” junior left tackle Kenarious Gates said. “That’s what we’re doing. We’re working on Kentucky now. We’re not worried about South Carolina. It’s in the past. We can’t do anything about it.”
Gates had the toughest assignment of anybody on the team as he played the entire night head up against the 6-foot-6, 256-pound Clowney. Occasionally Gates would get some help from a chipping running back or fullback. But essentially it was the first-year starting tackle against one of the best pass-rushers in college football all night.
“It was a great experience,” Gates insisted. “He’s a great player. You’re going against one of the best D-ends in the SEC. You’ve to got to give him credit. He’s strong, quick off the line. He opened my eyes to what I need to do to get better and the things I need to work on. We gave each other good competition out there.”
The question now is whether Georgia’s overall confidence on offense has been shaken to the core.
“No,” Gates said. “We still have high confidence in our team. We still have our goals moving forward. We’re still trying to do what we’ve been doing all season, which is to win and be one of the best offenses in the nation”
As bad as Saturday was, the Bulldogs remain second in the SEC in points scored (41.3 per game), third in total yardage (484 ypg) and their nine quarterback sacks allowed are fourth-fewest in the league.
“I think we’ll be fine,” Murray said. “I think we’re still confident with who we have, with the play-calloing, with everything that’s going on. We just didn’t execute when the time came. When plays were there to be made we just didn’t hit on them. . . . But I don’t think we’re shaken up at all. We’re going to come out very confident in our next game and be ready to go.”
Murray feeling better
Murray said he was being sincere when he said Saturday night and Sunday morning were “the worst 12 hours of his life.” Between the Bulldogs’ dismal performance against South Carolina, Murray’s house getting vandalized and finding out Sunday morning that his father had cancer and needed surgery immediately, “My head was about to explode at that point,” Murray said Wednesday.
But he was feeling much better after returning to practice this week. “Things are on the rise,” Murray said.
First and foremost, the prognosis for Denny Murray, who has thyroid cancer, is very good. “It’s a very treatable cancer,” Murray said. “They removed the thyroid completely and now he has to wait a few weeks and get a scan to make sure it didn’t spread. So hopefully we got it early enough and it didn’t spread and it’s gone.”
In some ways, Murray said having to deal with his father’s illness helped him deal with Saturday’s loss and all that has happened since, including getting a speeding ticket in Gainesville, Fla., on his drive back Monday.
“I was being a little baby, then my parents came in and told me about what was going on,” Murray said. “I didn’t even think of football after that. I didn’t think about the game. Nothing. It really does put everything in perspective about what’s most important in your life, who’s most important in your life and putting those things first.”
Said Georgia coach Mark Richt: “There’s never a good time to find out about your father having something like that. But it does help get everything else that happened in perspective. Those things don’t seem as bad.”
Practice update
The Bulldogs practiced for more than two hours in what coaches and players described as a “competition day.” There was a lot of contact and fundamental work and the day ended with the offense and defense scrimmaging.
“We had a good day; we had a fun day; we competed,” Richt said. “We treated it like a spring practice. We had a lot of things to work on and, since we weren’t going to compete Saturday, we decided to go out and compete with a scrimmage today. And we had some great competition.”
They said it
“First of all, I say we have the best fans in America. They do foolish things sometimes, usually in the first few hours after a ballgame. That’s just normal emotions. . . . Every once in a while a fan will do something foolish. But that doesn’t mean all fans are foolish.”
– Richt on fan behavior
Etc. . .
All-America outside linebacker Jarvis Jones was held out of practice for the second day in a row with a sprained ankle. Thursday is the last day of practice and it will be in shorts and helmets. . . . Richt said junior defensive end Garrison Smith has played exceptionally well in a backup role and will see his repetitions increase in the second half of the season.

We just got absolutely drilled, humiliated and exposed on national television and these are the types of comments we here from Richt about practice the week after:
“We had a good day; we had a fun day; we competed,” Richt said. “We treated it like a spring practice. We had a lot of things to work on and, since we weren’t going to compete Saturday, we decided to go out and compete with a scrimmage today. And we had some great competition.”
Unbelievable. Simply shocking. This guy isn’t a football coach. He’s Mr. Rodgers.
Oh, and about those South Carolina D-ends, their skills were pretty well documented BEFORE the game. If Theus’ and Gates’ eyes were going to be opened it should have happened then. Yep, let’s just sweep the fact that this coaching staff did a poor job of preparing them for the game and move on. Nothing to see here folks.
I’m sick of this crap.

“When the camera cut to him Saturday night after SC scored their 2nd TD, the look on his face was one of cluelessness. I told my friends right then that Richt didn’t know how to “fix” what was going wrong, and the only thing in play was how bad the final score would be.”
I had that same feeling. I was utterly disgusted when after the half both the O and the D looked exactly the same as the first half

No matter how good Saban, Miles, and a couple other coaches are, only one team will be national champions. That leaves a lot of losers. UGA competes well in the toughest conference. Let’s us see fine athletes, a good number of whom will make it to the NFL. The brand may be soiled to the sports pundits, who get paid a lot of money to be wrong a lot of the time (kinda like AJC sports writers–but it’s not a bad gig). Revenue is solid, and except for the frustrations of rabid fans who can’t stand being tormented by the other teams’ rabid fans, UGA supporters continue to love Fall, Saturdays, and looking forward to the next game. Okay, I got it. We’re not Alabama, LSU, and maybe Carolina and Florida, too. But, were we ever? Really? And for how long?

“For some reason, you expect to win championships every year…”
I don’t think anyone is saying that. You blind homer apologists are putting those words in our mouths because you don’t have a leg to stand on in this argument. Of course we can’t win championships every year, but we should be able to put on a respectable showing against top teams and not get our azzes blown out of the stadium like has happened so many times now that I’ve lost count. Heck, it wouldn’t be too much to ask for us to win a couple of those games every now and then.
“UGA competes well in the toughest conference”
We most certainly do not. We cannot beat the top teams. Not only can we not beat them, we can’t even compete with them. 42-30 Bama. 49-10 Florida. 45-19 Tennessee. 41-17 Florida. 49-31 Auburn. 42-10 LSU. 35-7 South Carolina. Not to mention losses to powerhouses like Georgia Tech, Colorodo and Central Florida thrown in for good measure.
You call that competitive? I have some ocean front property on the moon that you might be interested in. Give me a call.

I have not read any of the other post, but I have a theory about the second half in last weeks game. Carolina was basically controlling every phase of the game. They had decided to make Georgia beat them throwing the ball and had stacked the box, and were jamming our receivers at the line, thus disrupting our passing game. It was obvious we couldn’t block them. It was obvious to get back in the game, we had to pass often. We didn’t. IMO, early second half Richt decided ( to himself) that they needed to live to play another day, and if he put Murray back passing every play, they would pin their ears back and come after him and kill him. Call me crazy.

I will not excuse this loss and will hold Richt directly accountable. I am not now or at any other time satisfied with NOT WINNING A big game! Without that, we have little substance. Coach Richt should be more concerned with a big “statement ” win, than a huge bodycount against an outgunned opponent . Maybe he should try to change his COACHING style at preparing for ” big games “. Look in the mirror Mark R Richt and then tell us if you are satisfied with your performance and what you will do to fix this mess you called a top 5 team??? @

It’s not that Georgia lost a game, or even that Richt hasn’t won the NC. It’s that Georgia does not show up to play in big games. They are simply not prepared for high profile games.
I thought last Saturday’s game would be a toss up, 50-50. I didn’t think would get knocked on their rears and not have a single answer all game. I just wanted a respectable showing. We did not get that.
The team either lacks the will or preparation to win big games. It is one or the other.

They have failed miserably. Even an idiot must see it.

I was at that game on Saturday, and from the get-go, you could tell that it was going to be a long night. The energy level in that place was unbelievable. The UGA players body language told the whole story. The level of excitement even from the UGA coaching staff was lacking. The thing that stood out the most was that the players were confused and lost and the staff didn’t seem to even notice what was coming next. The UGA team played passively throughout this entire game as evident in the interception that the receiver took from Rambo on the second play of the game. UGA’s running succes has been to the left side the entire season and they basically abandoned that strategy. The first run from scrimmage was to the left side by Gurley, netting a nice gain. Then we got fancy, and attempted a reverse, that was snuffed out quickly. Every SEC coach out there knows that the best way to isolate Clowney is to run directly at him and not away from him. They failed to do that. BTW….Clowney was to UGA’s left side. Gurley is left handed, so his natural and strongest side would be running to the left. They should have used 2 TE to block Taylor and Clowney for the entire game and occasionally slipped them out of the backfield for a screen. It this was done just a few times, it would have kept the DE honest.
Furthermore, they placed Gurley in the backfield, standing almost directly next to Murray’s left. This made it quite evident that it was an inside handoff designed to go right. They did the exact same play every single time. In that line-up, it was impossible for him to run left because he would be at a complete standstill when he received the ball in order to run to the left. UGA’s scheme of play was the reason as to why this game was so lopsided, and that is the coach’s fault. I think Richt overall problem, is that he places too much confidence in his positional coaches’ decisions. He needs to intervene when one his coaches refuses to adjust. That has been his downfall since the 2006 season. That is why we’re not beating ranked teams. He has to be more involved in the overall game. I thought after MacGarity took over, that Richt would get back to being heavily involved. Saban is successful because he is married to the game and he micromanages when he needs to. Our coaching staff needs to reevaluate if they are going dedicate themselves to becoming better or if they are satisfied with 10 wins. The season is not lost, but the goals of the fans are slipping away quickly.

As for using the TE, is there a reason we wer afraid to throw to accomplished 6-8 and 6-6 TE’s, even at the goal line. I want Richt to acknowledge he let the team down with a flawed gameplan. Too many holes not plugged. It always looked like they had more players on the field than us. Crazy UGA, I don’t give a crap what Texas has or hasn’t done. I never ever go into a season expecting a championship of any kind.
What I do expect of UGA though, with the world of talent we have, is that we are competitive with any and every team we play.
And that rarely has happened since ‘05. Blowout after blowout – Fulmer, Kiffin, Myer, Saban, Miles, Peterson, and Spurrier have all beaten a Richt led UGA team in blowour fashion. Not to mention Richt lost embarrassingly to huge underdogs Vandy, Kentucky, Miss St, Colorado, and UCF.

The problem is that Richt & his staff are teaching these kids that losing is acceptable and to forget and move on. These kids are ALL top notch SEC athletes! At this level the loser mentality is not OK. Richt needs to make it clear to players & coaches that winning is the ONLY option in Athens.
I remember watching Tim Tebow in 2009, during a press conference after losing to Ole’ Miss, give a emotional apology & vow to Gator fans to never loss another game. That’s the mentality that Richt & staff needs to instill in Athens! This we loss it’s OK, move on mentality wont win ball games in the SEC.
Saben wins because he made it clear to players & coaches that losing is not exceptable.
The emotion and winning mentality is missing. Until CMR & staff figure this out UGA will continue to waste 5 star talent & lose against ranked teams.
