Notebook: UGA players believe vandalism an isolated incident by ’small group’

ATHENS – Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson said he had to go back and delete the tweet he sent out early Sunday morning claiming a “Good Samaritan” had cleaned up his egged and toilet-papered house and yard as he slept.

As it turns out, it was teammate Arthur Lynch, one of his four roommates, who took it upon himself to clean up the mess in the middle of the night.

“I wanted it to be a Good Samaritan,” Robinson said Tuesday after Georgia’s practice. “But I found out later it was Arthur. He said couldn’t leave it out there.”

Joked Lynch: “I needed eggs in the fridge so I was hoping they’d left some for me.”

Robinson and Lynch share an off-campus house on the outskirts of town with teammates Aaron Murray, Ty Frix and Dustin Royston. They returned to Athens in the wee hours of Sunday morning from their 35-7 defeat at the hands of South Carolina in Columbia to find trees covered with toilet papers and eggs splattered on the front door and all over the front of the house.

Lynch was able to remove the bulk of it sometime between 3-4 a.m. The property’s landlord sent out a cleaning crew later that cleaned up the rest.

“I didn’t want anyone to see it,” Lynch said. “It’s just one of those things. I didn’t take it personal. It was probably just a couple of guys who felt that way. After it got out, I got hundreds of text and messages from people saying they didn’t feel that way.”

“They sent out a pressure washer and got it cleaned up,” Robinson said. “They thought they were going to have to repaint but they don’t think so now.”

The players filed a report with the Athens-Clarke County police department, which told the Athens Banner-Herald that they were going to step up patrols around players’ residences on game days.

Lynch and Robinson said the act of vandalism has not tainted their perception of fans.

“It’s a small group,” Robinson said. “That’s what I;’ve been hearing and that’s what people have been talking about. It’s a small group of people. Right when I sent out that tweet, I had probably 700 people tweeting me reminding me of that.”

Said Lynch: “I’m learning more every year how much people invest emotionally into Georgia [football]. So I can see why. This is the state school and I can see why people feel like they do about it.”

But no matter how much fans want Georgia to win, it pales in comparison to the players.

“It was an unfortunate situation,” said flanker Tavarres King said. “But if there is anything I can get out there it’s that we want to win just as bad as everybody else wants us to win. We practice 365 days a year for 12 opportunities that are precious to us. So all that added stuff could be done without.”

SE Michael Bennett hospitalized

Sophomore split end Michael Bennett underwent reconstructive surgery Tuesday at St. Mary’s Hospital to repair the torn ACL in his right knee. Bennett was to remain hospitalized overnight.

Bennett tweeted from his hospital bed Tuesday afternoon. “Surgery went great! I feel like a million bucks on these pain meds.”

Bennett also tweeted a message to his teammates over the weekend: “Shout out to my boys. We are gonna be just fine! We know how to overcome adversity, especially with the leaders we have.”

Aaron Murray returns to campus

Murray made it back in time to practice with the Bulldogs. But he barely made it, despite breaking some speed laws on his drive back from Tampa.

In fact, Georgia’s junior quarterback was pulled over for speeding in Gainesville, Fla., home of the Florida Gators. Said Murray in a tweet at about 10 a.m. Tuesday: “I would get pulled over in Gainesville. Don’t think I am gonna be able to get out of this one.”

Murray, his brother Josh and sister Stephanie went to Tampa Sunday night to be with their father, Denny Murray, who underwent cancer surgery on Monday morning at the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa. The family reports that it went well and he is recovering.

Rambo speaks up

Free safety Bacarri Rambo spoke with reporters Tuesday for the first time since he tested positive for marijuana in March.

“It happened and it’s over with,” Rambo said. “I’ve just dealt with my consequences and I’ve done moved on and I’m back on the team.”

Rambo admitted to feeling “a little” rusty and just a half-beat slow on his reads and reactions. He pointed to the first-quarter pass play in the South Carolina game in which Damiere Byrd ripped a would-be interception out of his hands for a 42-yard gain. The Gamecocks went on to score their first touchdown in a 21-point first quarter.

“That’s the one I beat myself up about,” Rambo said. “I wonder if I’d made that interception would it have changed the momentum of the game. That’s where I’ve just got to correct the small things and read the quarterback and offensive line better and put myself in better position.”

Rambo said he didn’t have second thoughts about returning for his senior season, even though he missed four games due to suspension.

“I don’t regret coming back to school,” Rambo said. “I love my guys and I’m glad I’m here helping achieve team goals. Everything happens  for a reason. God has a plan for me. I’m just going to keep working hard and try to be the best player I can be for my teammates.”

Harvey-Clemons among captains

Georgia coach Mark Richt announced captains for the Oct. 20 Kentucky game and the group included a true freshman. Guard Chris Burnette is offensive captain, John Jenkins and Abry Jones are defensive captains and freshman Josh Harvey-Clemons was tabbed as special teams captain.

“It’s rare that a true freshman becomes a captain, but the staff and I felt he did the best,” Richt said. “Every special team he was on, he excelled and had a winning grade. All of the coaches were saying how excellent he played. It is really hard to become a captain as a freshman, especially true freshman, but he earned this and I’m proud of him.”

Outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who has been struggling with knee and groin injuries this season, sat out practice on Monday due to a sprained ankle. It’s unknown when he might return. . . . The Bulldogs’ two-hour practice was visited by members of Extra Special People, or ESP, an Oconee County organization that assists individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

People who react so immediately and so judgmentally typically lack personal self-confidence, and base their happiness on the performance of others that they rely upon to prop up their own personal inadequacy’s. South Carolina won fair and square, but played their minds out on Saturday. I don’t read into their win any more than I do our loss. All of you ready to judge UGA overrated and useless, need to join the ranks with the same folks ready to declare USC national champs. USC has never played a better game in it’s history, and won’t play a better one for a long time to come. UGA still needs to continue to improve and mature. The support structure doesn’t replace our coaching staff, because we know we have what we want, to move forward. Not to mention that we realize that the staff and the head coach represent the type of class and integrity that our university and it’s REAL money paying alumnus support and embrace. I would typically never respond in this manner, but enough is enough. WE ARE ALL DOGS! To treat one of our own, especially men who have been busting their a$$ for the last year in order to get better and stronger, like we would a person who had did some intentional harm to us is both classless, and excuse-less.

Florida passed UGA in 2006, LSU in 2007, Bama in 2008, USC in 2012. The next program to pass UGA is UT and that will happen in 2013 if Florida don”t beat UT to it. Look at the talent that Richt has had, and look at the results. It is called complacency, and that is what happens when Richt is not worried about keeping his job. Yes he is a nice guy, and a good Christian, but the fans want a coach that will coach his team up and not let the players turn their back to him (crowell), and make a fool of him. Does this happen to Saben or Meyer? No because they control their teams and DO care about winning National Championships. No worries though, unless something significant changes, I am not spending a 1000 bucks on season tickets anymore. I will continue my donations because I believe in the players, but I am fed up with Richts half hearted attitude, and Bobo’s hard headedness. Greg McGarity, what exactly were you hired for again? I can hardly wait for the Ga Southern game, UGA will look like a top 5 team again!

The players want to win more than the fans? Hmmmm then why do I see players tweeting “here is what shoes I am wearing today” and “Can’t wait to judge Greek Grind tomorrow!!!”

I have seen some players around campus and they are all in good spirits. Some were even debating on going downtown tonight, ya know because it is Tuesday.

I bet when Alabama loses, those players are madder than Hell all week, but here our attitude reflects the leadership…”Hey the sun came up WHOO HOO!”

It is horrible that the egging incident occurred, but Robinson is a prime example of our “great when the going is good, who gives a crap when it is bad” attitude.

Before the loss, he was one of the ones always tweeting about “Our team, our time, no regrets” and “We work 351 days of the year for 14 opportunities.” Now after a loss, “winning isn’t everything.” Obviously it was before we lost. PATHETIC!

While I believe some players really care, they do not want to “be the bad guy” and hold each other accountable for poor play. NO ONE on the sideline had ANY energy Saturday; we just bent over and took our spanking.

Can I get 2 tight ends, a full back and Gurley off tackle on 2nd and 3? Then the next time we get 2nd and 3, same formation, play action and try to hit the single WR who’s 1 on 1 on the outside. If he’s not there, you got 2 TE a FB, & Gurley to check down to outta the backfield.

When we get 2nd and 3, it’s shotgun 4 wide, and then it’s 3rd and 7…

Can someone send Bobo a copy of Bama’s playbook and some of their game film so he can study Down and Distance strategy? Moving the chains football?

The best defense is a clock control offense. I’m not paid 6 figures to coach offense in the SEC, but this sh@& ain’t rocket science. Study bama, study LSU, Study FLorida, study what SC did to us Saturday nite. How many times do those teams get in Power Formations when it’s time to move the chains… They all like to pick up 1st downs before it gets 3rd Down.

We like to go for the big play on 2nd and 3, or try to trick someone with a draw out of the shotgun (loss of 2) which puts pressure on us on 3rd down to convert. Then we line up shotgun spread and try to throw for it on 3rd and 4.

Bama lines up power and moves the chains… If they don’t make it, they are stubborn and line up and do it again. Then when you finally get sick of them powering you for 4-5 yds every carry and stack the box, they hit you deep.

You rarely if ever will see bama in the shotgun spread on their own goal line, or on the opponents goal line. But Georgia loves it… Backed up deep in their own end one… Shotgun 4 wide. Knocking on the opponents door… Imagine… Shotgun spread! 4 plays in a row from the 2…

We line up 3-4 wide every play. And our poor 5 linemen our overmatched and we give them no help. We talk about balance, but we have no balance. We don’t understand Down and Distance and how to sustain slow steady drives which eat clock. We don’t huddle and use the play clock. We don’t keep our defense on the sidelines resting while the other offense watches our steady march. We don’t wear out the opposing defense with power football.

We have become so 1 dimensional and it makes me angry to watch Gurley and Marshall struggle when an extra blocker or 2 would give them all they need to break into the secondary.

Please Coach Bobo…. For the love of Georgia…. Bring back the dawg gone I formation. Bring back the TE. It does not have to be so flashy. It doesn’t have to be so sexy. Just move the dang chains. Get in the huddle… Eat the clock. Rest the D….Copy Bama. Use these RB’s wisely. There will be plenty of chances to throw it, bud…. For the love of Georgia.

Thanks for reposting what many, many of us are thinking. We’ve all seen this movie play out before. The ending is always the same, Dawgs are unprepared, outcoached, and out schemed in every big game that counts. Now, instead of really working their butts off (like running every step in Sanford Stadium), our brain trust gave our players Monday off and apparently they have most of next weekend off as well. Not what I’d expect from a team that was totally embarrassed on national TV and was expecting to be in Miami in January.

The only thing the dogs could have countered the gamecocks defense Saturday night was with QB runs. Richt and Bobo cured Murray of running 2 years ago after he scored on a 23 yard td run as first half time expired in his first home game start. The crawled all over him for running. I mean the boy pulled off a nifty td run and got lambasted on the field and in the paper by BoboandRicht. Murray has been reprimanded when he actually showed toughness by his own coaches.

Why is it a surprise that SC now beats UGA with equal talent ? When Spurrier was at FL he beat UGA every year with worse talent. He said so himself. Does it matter what school the good coaches go to ? NOOOOOOO. Spurrier could beat UGA regularly if he coached at Vandy. Bet on it.

You Richt/Bobo supporters are ridiculous! “It’s just one loss!” No, it’s the pathetic record of 2-14 against ranked teams. I can except loosing when the team shows up and just gets beaten by a better team. But consistently getting blown out and embarrassed every year on a national scale is not acceptable any longer. Did you not hear the guys on ESPN talk about our coaching staff? Even they were saying how embarrassed they would be if they were a UGA fan. Bobo is absolutely clueless what to do when his game plan falls apart. He instantly falls back to his conservative, vanilla plays that everyone can see a mile away. Even my wife who knows nothing about football asked “why does he keep running the ball up the middle? It hasn’t worked one time the entire game. Why is the quarterback holding the ball so long?” Where was the screen pass? Where were the slants? Absolutely clueless. We will never win big games with these coaches. You people seem to be ok beating cupcake teams and being embarrassed year after year. I’ve been a Dawg fan for 40 years and I have never been embarrassed like I was Saturday night. Seeing that stupid grin on Spurrier’s face was bad enough but then to see Richt smiling and acting like the loss was not big deal was nauseating! “Golly gee, we just got whipped.” WHAT A JOKE!!

Here is the problem Dawg fans. The numbers don’t lie. Ga did not have a BAD GAME Saturday night, GA has been doing this the last 4 years. THINK NOT?? FROM 2001- 2008 GA WAS 22-10 AGAINST RANKED TEAMS. SINCE THEN, FROM 2008 UNTIL NOW, THEY ARE 4-13. ALSO THE LAST TIME THEY BEAT A TOP 10 TEAM WAS IN 2009, THE LAST TOP 5 TEAM THEY BEAT WAS IN 2006. The Right Reverend Richt is not an SEC head coach – never was, never will be. He would fit nicely in the ACC where the competition suits his style and there are no real expectations of a national title at any school. If you want to run with the big dawgs, you can’t pee like a puppy. I know the jury is still out on Muschamp, but look what he’s doing at Florida, and he’s one of ours. I’m afraid we missed a golden opportunity when he was available. I only hope that 5 years from now, when we’re 0-5 against his Gators, we can pry him loose and bring him home. (That does not mean I want 5 more years of Rev. Richt.)

Let’s see. Sanford Stadium holds over 92,000+. UGA apparel and merchandise sales typically rank in the top 10 nationally. UGA graduates and fans live all over the Country. Point? You cannot link a few teenage, bonified, knuckle-headed, morons to an entire fan base because of actions that are so stupid and pathetic.

REAL GEORGIA FANS care about this team and care about these kids! Don’t paint a group with such a broad brush. That would be like me telling all of you that “JUST SAYING” comes from a long line of idiots. That’s not really fair because none of them are showing their backsides publicly. So for now, I’ll stay limited in my view that only “JUST SAYING” is the idiot.

My personal belief is that they don’t believe they belong on the same field as the best anymore. UGA has lost their swagger. The Junkyard Dawgs have lost their bite, yet they can still bark like hell. The coaching staff and leaders of this team better figure out a way to infuse the team with some confidence in the BIG GAME environment.
Dawgs used to live for the BIG GAME. They might not have always won, but by God they always left it all on the field. Saturday night I felt like I had entered an alternate universe.

I’m going to start by saying in no way do I condone trashing a person’s house as well as any other unlawful activity. However, coaches and players want fans that are passionate, fans that are loud and help cause false starts. That kind of passion can also cause people to do dumb stuff also, like vandalizing houses. Read what happens at some of the loudest stadiums after a big win or big loss, you’ll see very similar things.

Also, it does amaze me sometimes when players do dumb things, such as drugs and failing a drug test. That players get mad when fans bash them, but when a UGA fan does something stupid everyone bashes them and doesn’t think a second about it. Double standard anyone?

It is horrible that the egging incident occurred, but Robinson is a prime example of our “great when the going is good, who gives a crap when it is bad” attitude.

Before the loss, he was one of the ones always tweeting about “Our team, our time, no regrets” and “We work 351 days of the year for 14 opportunities.” Now after a loss, “winning isn’t everything.” Obviously it was before we lost. PATHETIC!

While I believe some players really care, they do not want to “be the bad guy” and hold each other accountable for poor play. NO ONE on the sideline had ANY energy Saturday; we just bent over and took our spanking.

Since every team on our remaining schedule has a losing record- except 1…we will likely finish 10-2 with another blowout in Jax. 10-2 and a bowl game with this talent is unacceptable and if that doesnt move McGarity to do something- nothing will! Even the head ball coach himself said- it will be a disappointing season if we dont get back to Atl……well boys….Carolina took care of that Sat and Fla will drive the final nail in the coffin in Jax………so great to be a GA Bulldog with a team that basically got smacked in the mouth and ran like a chicken (no pun intended)…….NEVER have I seen a more embarrassing loss than this one- even Bama in our blackout- the players showed some sign of fight in the second half….this team is a bunch of pansies and showed it Sat……

Don’t understand the egging. The players didn’t lose that game the other night, it was the coaches not having them ready. Now you guys start egging the houses, make Georgia look like a bad place to play football, the students don’t support the PLAYERS, not only do you lose to South Carolina but you lose recruits. Get rid of the coaches, the one thing you have is great players, don’t chase them off, You should find out who did this and turn the nut in. Someone on that campus knows who it is. You are not helping your team or your school doing this or hiding it. I think it had to be a local person, how would you know where these guys lived, but I could see an outsider like a Tech fan doing it too. As the Bear once said “I can take mine an beat yours and take yours and beat mine”. Spurrier is one of those coaches who has that ability . I have been a Dawg fan 46 years and this is the worst performance I have witnessed. I saw Houston come to Athens in 68 when both were ranked in the top 10. From the first long pass completed by Houston it was obvious we didn’t have the talent or speed they had. Some how Dooley and Irk adjusted and managed to eek out a tie 10/10. They were able to play to our strengths and stay in the game with an obviously superior team. Even Jake Scott one of our best defensive backs ever said he didn’t want to see that team again.
Coach Richt and his staff do not seem to have the ability to adjust or inspire. I have been on these blogs many times defending this staff but I just can’t see this staff improving our team. It may be time for a change. We need someone who can take top notch talent and win. As everyone says CMR is a great guy who has reached his top level which is not where the fan base wants to be.
BTW rolling these young men’s residence shows a total lack of class. Show some class fellow fans although I doubt these people are true fans.

Duh!!!!!! You sir or madame whichever are correct, hit the nail on the head, and every cliche you come up with. GA has had so many great athletes Bobo does not have a clue how to manufacture a drive to keep the chains moving. The only time he attempts this is when we are ahead late in the game and he tries to run the clock out on the ground without much success, allowing other teams to get back in the game. No coach in the SEC is not aware of our tendency to run trick pays or reverses in the early part of the first drive. So everyone is ready for that usually after the first play. They are so pathetic in their play calling. Spurrier said it plainly. GA scores too quick and puts pressure on the defense. Well…We did not score quick at all and their running game and 10 passes kept the ball, controlled the clock and quickly put our defense back on the field with the punt return for a TD….What a concept, we go for the KO and they grind it out and kicked us in the mouth. Bobo’s play calling to keep the ball is the worst ever. Great post. It really blows my mind that he had no alternative plan except to use the Freshmen Gurley and Marshall to protect for passes and no one to block for runs. This little jab step the backs do to get the ball from Murray before they step to the LOS does not work vs a great defense. Lattimore heads straight to the line in full speed. That is fundamentals for moving the ball.. Not necessarily for 25 yards but it keeps the chains moving, it keeps their defense on the field and it runs the clock.

I’ve been critical of the dawgs lately but that doesn’t mean I don’t support them. They are my college team and will always be. When a football player doesn’t perform well or execute correctly on the field, they are benched by the coaches. It’s that simple. I feel strongly about certain aspects of UGA football that are not up to standards that every team should have and I’m frustrated by them.

Still love my team, just wished they were more competitive.

RangerDawg – I dont know what world you are living in but UT has won a National Championship much more recently than UGA. And UF has been an elite program that has won more SEC championships and National Championships over the past 20 years. Get out of your bubble.

UGA has never been on the same level as UF from a National perspective and based on WINS. This is what’s wrong w/ UGA and their fan base, they are so used to winning the recruits in FEB that they forget that you have to win on the field.

You are correct that SCAR has officially passed UGA this year in terms of program status – at least based on wins, rankings and national perception.

I would hope that it goes without saying that it was a “small group” of people responsible for the egging and rolling. If the entire UGA fan base was responsible, which numbers in the hundreds of thousands if not millions, it would have been quite the spectacle.

About our big game struggles, I was thinking about this the other night. This isn’t necessarily a new development under Richt. Haters and detractors have been saying since day 1 of his tenure it seems. We lost to eventual national champ LSU twice in 2003, getting blown out the second time. We lost to undefeated Auburn in 2004 and it was never really that close or even interesting. That team was loaded, but we couldn’t compete. Sure, Richt had his fair share of big wins back then but we were getting blown out in big games too. West Virginia got a big lead on us in the Sugar Bowl because we were totally unprepared for that game. This year’s South Carolina game is nothing new.

We will never win a national title with Mark Richt as our head football coach. I am officially finished with hoping for that miracle. It just isn’t going to happen.

I like Mark Richt and his ethics and morality; but, he is a Big East grade coach. He has stocked UGA with the best athletes in college football, but he’s like the dog chasing the car; when he gets them, he doesn’t know what to do with them. Saban or Spurrier, and many other coaches would win NC with UGA’s players. We can continue to fawn over beating Vandy and GT, and be satisfied, or we can change coaches. Whom, in the game today, would any of you consider a better coach and UGA representative than Mark Richt. Dooley and Butts didn’t win Championships every year either and I guarantee you there were disappointments along the way. UGA should have won more championships in the early ’80’s than they did. They had the best talent in the SEC. Bad games happen. It’s identifying the reason for the failure and correcting it then moving on that counts. By the end of the year USC, UGA and UF could all have one loss against each other. Let it play out. The kids will overcome this adversity and it may be the final lesson they need to win the NC next year.

We’ll see.

Big Mike, the aforementioned, already identified problem is not the need for the kids to learn an adversity lesson. The problem is the coaching staff and its leader, Mark Richt. Look at the record against ranked teams since 2008; it isn’t the players.

The only times I can remember Dooly getting embarrassed like Richt was Saturday night, was when he foolishly accepted an invitation to play Nebraska in the Sun Bowl (45-6) with a very under-qualified team, and in the ‘77 Sugar Bowl agaist Pitt (27-3). That was over a period of 25 years, and no, Dooly did not have the best players in college football like Richt does now.

Then you hear about Aaron Murray not being able to sleep for days before the South Carolina game. That is not good. You need a QB who is relaxed under pressure. You need a QB with “ice water in his veins” as the saying goes. Too much of the offense is on his shoulders. That’s just all there is to it. Its fine when we’re playing a Vandy or a Missouri, but against the big boys a QB can only take you so far. You’ve got to be physical up front or you’re toast. I’ve been saying this until I am blue in the face. Its been proven time and time again. Murray can’t beat teams like South Carolina all by himself but that is what he is asked to do. He has no support up front. This is Bobo’s biggest and most fatal flaw. He wants us to be like an NFL team but this isn’t the NFL and we don’t have the horses up front to be like an NFL team against good teams.

I’m sure we’ll score 40 or more points on Kentucky though and then all the Bobo apologists will start coming out of hiding and say he’s doing a fine job. They’ll blame the South Carolina loss on Murray. Murray is only doing what he’s told to do. You put Murray in an Alabama uniform and he’s probably not shattering records and throwing for a zillion yards but he’s winning championships. True story.

Kirby Smart would take the job in a heart beat. Former player. Studied under the best of the best and knows what it takes to get to the top. It would be a gamble for sure. Everything is a gamble. Keeping Richt is a gamble. I see nothing but Outback Bowls and runner up finishes in the SEC East in our future, if that. We’ll probably have plenty of 8 win seasons or worse thrown in to. We’re only a couple of injuries away from being an 8 win caliber team right now. I’m bored with it. Time to move on to something new.

What happens when Kirby doesn’t produce? The head coach in college is mostly a figure head. Even Spurrier said he has nothing to do with the USC defensive success, ”The defensive coordinator and those other coaches handle all that” (speaking of the defensive schemes).
Richt manage to do well winning championships at FLA ST and later as head coach of UGA in early 2000’s. The problem is deeper than that. The actions of the Athletic Director and the former defensive coordinator left UGA with a severe hangover that has to be overcome. Same as when Ray Goff was head coach. In fact this reminds me of those years, only I don’t think Richt is the problem. I think Richt is on the verge of correcting the problem which he in part created with the hiring of Willie Martinez.

Back to back 10-2 seasons is not going to get Richt replaced. Three 6-7 seasons in a row would. Hoping UGA wins a national championship is the carrot and stick every few years. Demanding it is delusional. There is such parity among the top tier teams that it comes down to coaching. We have “good” coaches, but the grades are poor, fair, good, and excellent. The distance between good and excellent is analogous to making the cut in a golf tournamnet to play the weekend, and winning it.

Alphare – Nothing Could Be Finer – Congrats. Your fan base has suffered for years. Supported your team through disappointment. You have your reward. You have one of the best coaches of all time. I think he is a total douche bag of a person, but he is truly a great coach.

I was so mad Saturday I swore that I wouldn’t watch us again until we hired Petrino, started gray shirting and dropped our drug policy. Basically sell our souls. 4 days later… I don’t know what the answer is. I think Richt is fine but we need coaching changes. Most noteably we need someone who can recruit offensive lineman and develope them. I don’t understand why Bennett is the only receiver we have who can block. I agree with Mark Bradley, I think the UF game should hold a lot of weight for this coaching staff. I would like to know where all of the Mettenberger fans are now?

Unrealistic and overhyped expectations are somewhat to blame for this reaction to a very predictable result vs SC.

We all witnessed the inflated predictions by the vast majority of the forum UGA fans leading into the game….52-17, 48-21, etc. These were of course understandable considering the unrelenting sunshine pumping by the local UGA beaner “journalists” at the AJC who have been pushing the UGA as the greatest team in the history of football angle for the past 10 months.

The never-ending promotion of every RB as the next Hershel is just one small example. That “Gurshall” ran up their yards against some of the worst run defenses in college football was never mentioned as the resident UGA homers masquerading as sports journalist were too busy pimping up “their Dawgs”. In many cases, they are worst than many of the UGA fans by getting caught up in their own hype, so why shouldn’t the rest of the UGA fans who rely on these journalists to give them the real scoop on the team. So fans are in shock when the actual team appears on the scene like on Saturday night and react irrationally. Conner Shaw outrushed the great and mighty “Gurshall”.

UGA was\is what they always were….a very pedestrian top 15 to 25 level team who still lacks playmakers at WR and quality OL.

I’ve said similiar things before, but I cann not emphisize enough how bad the UGA coaching staff needs to evaluate player talent coming out of High School. Granted, we have lots of talent, but South Carolina does, too. And while they have a couple of 4 & 5 star recruits, the majority of their players are 3-star recruits – Just like Michael Bennett – which just fo happens to be Georgia’s leading receiver. I believe UGA scouts need to spend more time evaluating talent – Or hire a different set of scouts, to go out & find the Michael Bennetts of the world. Sout Carolina is beating Georgia’s 5-star guys with 3-star guys. Point taken.

While I disagree with most of your blog, there is some truth to it. I believe most UGA fans were shocked at not that UGA lost, but the way UGA lost. South Carolina is a good team – Maybe a Very good team, but UGA was flat-out unprepared. Granted SCar has talent in areas UGA lacks, such as the Line of scrimage, things shouldn’t have gotten out of hand so fast. And I think the fact that SCar barely won vs Vanderbilt & played close games for most of the season, UGA fans had reason to think that UGA would win this game – or at least it would be a nail-biter. As the season rolls on we will find out how good SCar really is, and if this was just a game where the setting was right for SCar on a night where they got all the breaks.

You guys have to keep in mind that the hinge pin of this or any offense is the O-LINE. Our guys are extremely young and underdeveloped (naturally). After a year or two in the weight traing program, they will beef up and be able to handle D-LINES like the one they faced Saturday in Columbia. In the meantime, I’m extremely disappointed that our coaching staff did not game plan (at all) for this mismatch. I don’t know, maybe there was no option available. Or the could have had our quarterback, not necessarily Murray, run the ball more on sweeps with pitch options. Not even sure that would have worked. USC was amped up and overachieving (if the results of their previous 5 games are accounted for).
In any case, the offensive line has not peaked and probably won’t until next year. When they do, no one will stop this attack. With Murray or Mason.

BMOC, I think the close games that SC played earlier in the season were close because SC spent the practice time preparing for us instead of the other guys. Spurrier knew he could beat those other teams on talent alone and with minimal preparation. Us, he wanted to have the best gameplan to win it like they did.

If the AJC beaners were doing their job they would have been doing a in-depth analysis of SC so that the UGA fans were aware that SC would be bringing a dangerous team into the match up and they should be wary…instead all the UGA fans got was “GURSHALL” and that UGA had finally found the newest Hershel.

Obviously you can’t analyze a team by what they did against common opponents; otherwise, based on the common Vanderbilt opponent, UGA should have wiped the floor with USC.

Here, Here. I happen to believe that UGA is close, but not there yet. With a little more seasoning they will be ready and CMR will be the one that gets them there. There is only one Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier. They are great coaches in their own right. They have also been Head Coaches a lot longer than CMR. Don’t think Richt is stupid, he is learning and taking his lumps with every loss. Why should we train him to be a Head Coach only to let him go to another program, so that they might reap the benefits.
Stick with him a couple of more years and you will see a difference. He is a much better coach now than he was 10 years ago, even though he won a couple of championships then. I have never seen an offense operate the way this one does. The maturing of the offensive line is the final piece of the puzzle.

The basics are: CMR is one heck of a recruiter. Good Evaluator of talent. A Good Play Caller.

He has proven he can take talent from the previous coaching regime and win and
and win big with them. But since that talent worked its way through the program
the numbers have fallen. The man is a good man, a good christian man as UGA
fans say when he is attacked or falls short. But good men are not always the best
football coaches. In 10 plus years we have seen the wins against top 25 teams
become losses. Now his players personal lives and property are being attacked.
Let me ask you a question. If the egging and TP attack happened at one of the
other schools, how long would it take for a Nick Saban, Les Miles, Bob Stoops,
Urban Meyer, even Will Muschamp to address it in a more than aggressive manner?

Re: BIGMIKE You’re right, our O line is young and undeveloped but when have they not been? Last year we had experience on the line and still lost the four games that meant the most. Our coaches spend far too much time recruiting 5′9′ 178 lb. db/wr as opposed to linemen that can be coached and trained to CONTROL THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AND THE GAME. We play freshmen, r freshmen and sophmores every year (look at the roster and note the classes of O linemen) and are unable to grind out hard yards and first downs when it means the most. Maybe we are always going to run this shotgun offense regardless of score and field position but the results speak for themselves. We have not and most likely will not go any further than we are now until this changes.

I agree, the O-LINE and TEAM strength and conditioning were not close to par for years. Back in the 70’s and 80’s, UGA, Clemson, USC among other 1A teams had a steroid program to go with their weight training. Not sure if that ended with the big push against steroids, but, Richt and team have changed their weight training program after realizing what we all see. What they were doing was not working. What they are doing now, is working; however, it takes more than one year in the program to make a difference and UGA has a lot of Freshmen they are counting on this year that haven’t even been in the program a year.

My house got rolled back in high school and I never thought it was a big deal. I found out later that it was friends in the neighborhood. I thought it was a funny prank. I see your two big men in the middle going to he NFL, your best Defensive Outside Lb/DE is gone to the NFL, your best DB is gone to the NFL, your best LB is gone to the NFL. Under the bleachers, you aren’t wrong. The defense will be ugly next year. I was a huge Grantham fan but not anymore. Willie Martinez is probably wondering why in the hell he lost his job. Look what Grantham has done this year with all this NFL talent at his disposal: Jack squat. Our defense has to be one of the biggest underachievers in all of college football this year. There are huge swaths of the field completely unmanned game after game. Its painful to watch. Its almost like all we seem interested in is rushing the QB and getting sacks. That’s great, but if you don’t get the sack bad things can happen. Let’s think outside the box a little bit here Grantham. Connor Shaw almost mocked our defense in his pregame interviews. He said he saw plenty of things to exploit. I thought he was being a little arrogant until I saw him go out there and make it happen on the field without breaking a sweat. He was just stating the obvious. To be called out like that and do absolutely nothing about it is absolutely humiliating for our defense. So how in the world is it going to get better when all those NFL guy’s leave? It isn’t. We’re in for a world of hurt next year.

The blind homer apologists will say I’m not a true fan for stating what should be painfully obvious to anyone with the cognitive abilities of a 4 year old and fully functioning eye sight. Then when what I predict happens they will act like they never saw it coming and bury their heads in the sand even further. Its the blind homer apologists that are perfectly content with the occassional Outback Bowl berth and “wait til next year” that are driving this program in to infinite mediocrity, not people like me.

I have few thoughts about our loss to carolina
1- Bobo lacks big stage ideas! his plan for the game should count on short passes and protection, he approached the game as he was playing Vandy, Clowney should have been neutralized by double team. i reminds me of our loss to Bama in 08 and LSU last year. he has the same damn plan! no innovation!
2- Murray is an easy breakable QB, once he get knocked down a couple of times he becomes a terrible one!a mirror immage of his OC
3- despite our loss I still believe our D is for real

Oh, yeah. I REALLY SINCERELY HATE to say this, but I wouldn’t hold out a lot of hope for the FL game, folks. He’s got thosse kids down there rolling. I might listen to Muschamp coming here. That game could VERY EASILY get out of hand. It literally depends which dogs show up. We’ve got an off week and they’ve got LSU so you would think that’s in our favor, but like the Braves, the Hawks and the Falcons for WHATEVER reason, some unholy pact with the devil or a curse from and indian tribe somebody built a building over their graveyard on P’tree Street, we’re just as like to do down there and wet 56 pairs of silver britches. Sorry. Just being realistic.

LOL @ this post. Allow me to translate: If you look past the fact that they’re solid in just about every phase of the game, they’re overrated. That makes about as much sense as Mike Bobo’s game plan this past Saturday.

There were about 100+ other plays in that game that say differently. Our offensive line would have magically figured out how to block South Carolina if Rambo catches that ball? Our defense would have magically figured out how to stop Connor Shaw from pretty much running on them at will? They would not have had busted coverage after busted coverage if Rambo had caught that one ball? We put absolutely no pressure on Shaw the entire game, but that changes if Rambo catches that one ball?

You’ve been listening to too many Mark Richt press conferences. This is not how big time football programs operate. They don’t hope that great things happen to them. They make them happen.

I don’t know dude. They’re undefeated and its October 10th. They beat LSU. This is the SEC we’re talking about. Sounds like top 5 material to me. I’ve seen them play. Sure, they aren’t flashy and putting up fancy stats like we are (or did), but they’re doing the things that you need to do in this league to win big like winning the battles up front and controlling the football. Richt & Co. should be taking a lot of notes.

I’m sorry. I’m really not trying to give you blind homer apologists too much of a hard time, but your acceptance of mediocrity is killing this program.

I’ve maintained all along that UF is good. I’m stunned by what Muschamp has accomplished in a year. They folded in the second half last year (look at our win in Jax). This year they haven’t given up a single point in the fourth quarter. I still think they’re a year away from being a top 5 team. Again, that’s hardly disparaging them. We’ll see how they do against South Carolina. If Florida wins that game, then I’ll freely admit that they’re top 5 material.

BTW, I’m hardly a Richt apologist. But I also don’t lump him in with Ray Goff either. But you’d better have a good idea of who is coming in next before you part ways with Richt. Despite what some believe, canning Richt does not automatically mean that the program will improve.

3MM a year for what? All of you homers need to wake up and get a dose of reality. Mark Richt is not a great coach. He is a good man, we’ve all said it. So what, so is my pastor and there is no way in hell he should be a football coach. Richt has a Ferrari sitting here and has no idea how to drive a stick. But wait some say, he’s a good man an represents the school well. What? Give me a freaking break. What are we getting for the money? Thats the real question. Kirby Smart, Dan Mullen, Joker Phillips, etc could all give us the exact same wins that Richt has given us since 2005 (LSU). He hasnt done anything that any other coach couldnt do. Get rid of him and lets right the ship. Spend the money and put an end to this low-level bush league bs. Go waive 6MM a year in front of some hungry OC in the NFL and see how much interest you get.

AR, not many coaches who win 75% of their games get a pink slip. You usually toss them because they’re not winning, so what do you have to lose. I share the frustration with Richt’s inability to beat ranked teams, but look at this way: he’s done better overall than the three guys before him (Donnan 68%, Goff 57% and Dooley 72%) and Richt’s won considerably more than Georgia’s historical 64.5% winning percentage.

Doesn’t mean he shouldn’t go. There are good arguments for making a change. But we could (and historically, we have!) done worse. That’s not spin, it’s just reality.

Mark Richt has done okay when the major powers in the conference have been down for one reason or another. He’s been lucky. Lucky is good, but Mark Richt isn’t an elite CFB HC.

What kind of rednecks do we have as fans now. How on earth do you do that to your team (or any team players for that matter). I would hope that someone knows something, and the will report it. I read where Carvell had his car trashed at Clemson, 31 years ago, that happened to me. Those are some classless fans for sure. Having said that, the best fans which I have ever seen were in Missouri, I’ve been to games at every SEC venue except for Arkansas, and A&M now, and none could hold a light to class those Mizzou fans displayed. I hope that we can learn a lesson here and not let our team be treated in the manner in which some rednecks chose to do after the SC game. WOW

I’ve been silent for a while now, but I still can’t get past the lack of game planning for that game. We continuously tried to block Clowney one on one and with a tailback. I’m not a coach, but I could tell you that wasn’t going to work. Maybe we just got too full of ourselves. I’m still just dumbfounded. Either way, our coaches and players are gonna have to step up and put this one behind them. The nation thinks we’re overrated and until we do something to disprove that, it will never change.

Aaron Murray is to short to play against quality defensive teams in the SEC. The good defensive teams load the box with 7 to 8 men across the front. This total stops our offensive running backs from having any lanes to run in or to break runs to the outside. This also allows the defense to block the few passing lanes that Aaron Murray needs to see and have any opportunity to complete passes. The only passes Aaron Murray is able to attempt and complete are sideways to recvrs and 25 yard passes down each sideline, throw it long and hope we catch it, problem is we dont have AJ or the Durham any longer. Aaron Murray is the weakness in the UGA offense, has been and will continue to be until Mason or a future recruit with height and throwing accuracy is playing QB

You couldn’t be more wrong. There are plenty of 6′1″ QBs in the country who do just fine. For the record, Connor Shaw is the same size as Murray, we loaded the box on him and he did just fine. The problem has been, and continues to be our coaching staff’s (especially on offense) inability to make key adjustments or their flat out inability to go into a game with a solid plan. You can’t block a guy like Clowney one on one and you sure as heck can’t assign a freshman RB to block him on pass plays. You are hands down setting yourself up for failure. We should have went more hurry up, and ran more screens and stop and go routes. We actually moved the ball pretty decent in hurry up. At least that way, we could’ve worn their defense down a little. Our gameplan, set us up for failure, and when we fell behind late, we just became to dejected to fight back. It was like watching the second half of the SEC championship game all over again. We made a couple of good stops in the second quarter and had a chance to make it a game or at least go into the half down 21-7, but didn’t take advantage. Then we come out at halftime with a chance to go down and score and slow their momentum and didn’t look as if we changed a single thing. Went three and out and the route continued. It’s series like that, that have been the difference in this team being able to take the next step or not. 90% of the teams in America would die to have Arron Murray behind center. It’s not his fault! He doesn’t block, he doesn’t tackle, and he doesn’t come up with the game plan. Given that and he just found out HIS DAD HAD CANCER, I would say he did the best he could. It’s obvious whta the real problem is and I’ve been a Richt supporter forever, but 0-10 or 11 against top ten teams is pathetic when you have the talent of this team and some of the teams he’s had in the past.

Would people who keep calling for Jon Gruden, PLEASE give it a rest!!! Gruden has the BEST gig in all of football, analyst for Monday Night Football. He’s making millions doing that, plus a little extra cake on the side with ESPN (although he gets one check from the Disney corp.), but he isn’t leaving that gig to come coach UGA, Bama, the GB Packers or anyone else. Why would he possibly want to come and coach UGA and deal with our fans!!!

Woof Woof…. why don’t you teach your kid some values…. Are you serious, her college education and future life are dependent upon the football team wins and losses….

If so, I would suggest a school who can at least beat a top 25 team more than once every 4 years…..

We got lucky last year in avoiding BAMA, LSU, and Arkansas…. somehow we got lucky this year and did not have to play any of the good teams in the west again!

The problem is we are only winning against the cellar dwellers of the SEC and are like 0-9 against the better ranked teams in the SEC over the past few years….

Here are our wins over the Losers of the SEC.. and their Conference Records

Missouri = 0-4
Vandy = 1-3
Tenn = 0-3
UK = 0-4 (Assuming we win this weekend and then they will be 0-5).

That is a collective 1-15!!!!! Why should we be surprised at the USC beatdown when we don’t ever face good competition?

But you say I am forgetting the other wins…. that’s right we beat
Buffalo = 1-5
Florida Atlantic = 1-5

BTW, we beat Buffalo 45-23 and yet this past weekend Northern Illinois beat them 45-3!! Shows you how we have been drinking our own kool-aid.
