COLUMBIA, S.C. – A dismal loss to South Carolina extended and exacerbated the Georgia football team’s multi-year trend of struggling — a lot — against top opponents.
Saturday night’s 35-7 loss — Georgia’s first game of the season against a ranked opponent and its first defeat of the season — dropped the Bulldogs’ record against Top 25 teams to 2-8 since the start of the 2010 season, including 0-4 against Top 10 teams.
And going back a bit further, the loss dropped the Bulldogs to 6-14 against Top 25 teams since the start of the 2008 season, including 1-9 against Top 10 opponents.
The impact of the loss on Georgia’s national reputation was quickly registered. Ranked No. 5 before the game, the Bulldogs tumbled Sunday to No. 14 in the Associated Press media poll and No. 12 in the USA Today coaches’ poll. South Carolina rose from No. 6 to No. 3 in both.
Asked late Saturday night how he responds to the perception that Georgia doesn’t rise to the occasion in high-profile games, UGA offensive lineman Chris Burnette said: “I can’t really dispute it because we haven’t.”
The Bulldogs’ only wins over ranked opponents in the past 2 1/2 seasons came last season against Auburn and Georgia Tech, Nos. 24 and 25, respectively, in the AP poll at the time of those games.
You have to go back to a 2009 victory over Tech, No. 7 at the time, to find Georgia’s most recent victory against a Top 10 opponent. Aside from that, the Bulldogs have lost to every such team they’ve faced in the past 4 ½ seasons: Alabama and Florida in 2008; Oklahoma State, LSU and Florida in 2009; Auburn in 2010; Boise State and LSU (SEC title game) in 2011; and South Carolina in 2012.
“We definitely want to make sure that in the future we can rise up to that occasion,” Burnette said. “We know what we’re capable of, but we’ve just got to go back and look at film and figure out what happened, what we did wrong.”
Saturday’s loss left Georgia (5-1, 3-1 SEC) a game behind South Carolina (6-0, 4-0) and Florida (5-0, 4-0) in the SEC East. Georgia doesn’t play this week, while South Carolina is at LSU and Florida at Vanderbilt.
Georgia won the East last season despite losing to South Carolina. To repeat that feat, the Bulldogs likely would need to win out — including Oct. 27 vs. Florida, currently No. 4 in the AP poll — and would need South Carolina to lose twice (say, at LSU and at Florida).
“I’m definitely not losing confidence in this team at all or in our coaching staff or anything like that,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said Sunday. “That’s the worst thing you can do. Teams panic and they tend to fall apart. But Georgia is not going to fall apart.
“A year ago, we’re 0-2 and everybody wants to decide the sky has fallen and it’s over for Georgia. But what did we do? We stayed firm; we believed in each other; we kept banging away; we started to win; and before you know it, we won the Eastern Division. … It’s unfortunate [Saturday’s game] came out the way it did with so much at stake, but there’s still a lot at stake. The sun did come up, and we’re going to get back to work.”
Richt rejected the suggestion the Bulldogs were flat against the Gamecocks.
“I wouldn’t say it was a flat performance,” he said. “I would just say that South Carolina physically whipped us.”
He continued: “If we’d had more success early in the ballgame, it wouldn’t have seemed like a flat performance. Even the initial drive, if [Bacarri] Rambo hangs on to the pick and we turned it into points, all of a sudden things look a little bit different. So there’s a lot of things that could have happened along the way if we could have [pass-]protected better or run- blocked better and been more accurate or tackled better — all of those things. I’m still going to say South Carolina did a heck of a job, and we didn’t get it done.”
Georgia averaged 48.2 points in winning its first five games, but the Gamecocks jumped to a 21-0 lead in the first 10 minutes and held the Dogs scoreless until the final two minutes.
As South Carolina built the early lead, Georgia had breakdowns on offense (a tipped interception), defense (a missed interception, open receivers) and special teams (a 70-yard punt return for a Carolina touchdown). So it went, the Gamecocks’ domination starting on the line of scrimmage and permeating all phases of the game.
“It’s definitely humbling,” Bulldogs linebacker Jarvis Jones said.
“They were shell-shocked,” South Carolina tailback Marcus Lattimore told reporters. “We hit them in the mouth, and they weren’t ready for it.”

People blaming Murray have a short memory.Murray WAS THE B TEAM and it shows in the big games. When Zach M got kicked off the team Murray had to step up. All is not lost, We’ll beat Kentucky Auburn and the Nerds. People just have to stop OVERRATING UGA into the top 10
which they will not be under Richt.

To EX GEORGIA FAN: You are just the type fan that I’m talking about. You talk big on Monday morning but you’ll be one of the fringe fans that will get your UGA hat, koozie and tee shirt back out for the bowl game – no matter where it is. So go ahead Mr Blow Hard Fan and tell me what a moron I am but I know you. I see your kind every time UGA loses and whines about being tired of it. Cry me a bucket dude. So since you’re an EX GEORGIA FAN, I hear that GT is looking for some new fans. Good luck with that….

When the defense lives in your backfield, when your quarterback is sacked or chased out of the pocket 12 times in the 1st half… you might consider a draw play or a screen pass… unless of course, you’re calling the plays for GA bulldogs.

As a UGA graduate and Redcoat alum, I have been going to Homecoming for many years. I also had season tickets for a few as well. This will be the first time I have not set foot back in Sanford Stadium for Homecoming in nearly 30 years since I graduated. I can’t stomach the thought of watching that overpaid incompetent coaching staff stealing from UGA. That’s right- stealing!
While by all accounts a fine man, CMR IS NOT suited for a Div I HC job- Bobby Bowden warned them of that! $2.9 million a year and then additional endorsements and salary incentives? Really? Anywhere else, he would have been run out of town long ago. His blind loyalty to his joke of a coaching staff, lack of fear & respect from the majority of his team, poor play calling and clock management, the list of shortcomings goes on. If I see another “Built Ford Tough” or Carpets of Dalton I will just puke.
The lack of commitment to excellence for the obscene amounts of money paid to these people is baffling. However, it’s beginning to make more sense after reading the great book (written by an ex-AJC staffer, Richard Whitt), “Behind the Hedges”. Anyone who has even the slightest interest in anything UGA should be required to read this!
Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result. Well, the Bulldog Nation has lost their collective minds if they advocate the retention of CMR and his staff. Not a dime of my money has gone to UGA in 5 years, and I will not attend another game until substantive changes have been made. We should all be ashamed with the mediocrity we have come to accept. Rise up- and I don’t mean Falcons- I mean UGA fans! Put your money and time where your mouth is!

One game, one night? No, Richt’s teams are 2-14 against teams that finish top 25, 0-9 in the last 9 games. The talent has been there, the coaching has not.
And no, Richt’s wrong, this isn’t like 2011, where you faced 2 ranked teams, then no ranked teams for 10 games, Richt gets #4 Florida at the end of October, so there will be no such streak or run of wins in 2012, Florida will annihilate UGA.
The UGA team wasn’t even competitive against South Carolina in 2012, lost 35-7. At least the loss to South Carolina in 2011 was 45-42, gave hope for rest of the season, not in 2012, a 35-7 loss points to structural problems that can’t be fixed in 2012. Or 2013. Maybe even 2014.
Inexperienced O-Line and ineffective 3 man d-line–UGA is not stout in the trenches.
Offensive pass first strategy doesn’t work in the current SEC, the dlines get too much pressure and the DB’s just jam the receivers at the line giving not time for the QB.
Freshman rb’s that are talented perimiter runners, but when turned inside, seem pedestrian, and their inepxerience at passblocking becomes a liability.
A defense that can’t stop anyone, including teams like 119th offense Buffalo.
Special teams that crack in big games without a special teams coach, continue to do dumb stuff, like punt to college football’s best punt returners–Ty Matt in 2011, Ace Sanders in 2012. And can’t cover or tackle or get proper hang time on punt return.
Sub par QB’s like Cox & Murray who can’t show poise in big games.
2012 is done, no way South Caorlina loses 2 games. Not this time. And 2013 doesn’t look any better with the SAME QB, NO SPECIAL TEAMS COACH, SAME DEFENISVE COACHES, SAME OFFENSIVE PASS HEAVY APPROACH, and less expeience on both sides of the ball.
At 2-14 against teams that finish top 25 since 2008, Richt’s words are becoming more and more hollow because he can’t back them up.

If you really want the straight dope on Mark Richt, listen to his radio interviews. He’s not the least bit upset or even concerned about how his team performed. All he does is put a lame positive spin on everything. He mentions things like the SC game is a learning experience. CMR has been the coach at UGA for 10 plus years. The team is laden with seniors. How much does he and the players have to learn?

You Richt/Bobo supporters are ridiculous! “It’s just one loss!” No, it’s the pathetic record of 2-14 against ranked teams. I can except loosing when the team shows up and just gets beaten by a better team. But consistently getting blown out and embarrassed every year on a national scale is not acceptable any longer. Did you not hear the guys on ESPN talk about our coaching staff? Even they were saying how embarrassed they would be if they were a UGA fan. Bobo is absolutely clueless what to do when his game plan falls apart. He instantly falls back to his conservative, vanilla plays that everyone can see a mile away. Even my wife who knows nothing about football asked “why does he keep running the ball up the middle? It hasn’t worked one time the entire game. Why is the quarterback holding the ball so long?” Where was the screen pass? Where were the slants? Absolutely clueless. We will never win big games with these coaches. You people seem to be ok beating cupcake teams and being embarrassed year after year. I’ve been a Dawg fan for 40 years and I have never been embarrassed like I was Saturday night. Seeing that stupid grin on Spurrier’s face was bad enough but then to see Richt smiling and acting like the loss was not big deal was nauseating! “Golly gee, we just got whipped.” WHAT A JOKE!!

Richt seems thrilled with 2011.
Why? Went 0-4 vs. teams that finished top 25, went 10-0 against teams that didn’t.
2011 wasn’t a good year as UGA couldn’t beat a single great team.
2010 UGA lost 7 games to teams that finished with winning records, and won 6 games against teams that finishes with losing records.
Now 2012. 0-1 against top 25 teams, 5-0 against non-ranked teams.
Anyone notice a trend? Mark Richt thinks it’s a 1 game blip, is Richt correct?

Nick Saban take responsibility for his team failure and apologize to his fans and players.
2008 -”If we would’ve said at the beginning of the season,” Saban said, “this is our goal — to get to a BCS game — I think everybody would’ve been pretty happy about that. But the expectations got raised a little bit because we had an opportunity to win the SEC Championship and possibly play in the national championship game. And I know how badly our fans and players wanted that, and we apologize for not helping get that done better.”

After Murray’s interception, he was so rattled, he was afraid he would be blamed for the loss if he threw another interception, so Murray started missing receivers by 5 years or more, he was more worried about protecting his stats, than winning the game.

“…Marcus Lattimore told reporters. “We hit them in the mouth, and they weren’t ready for it.”
**********************************************
Hey Marcus, they are “never ready for it.” 1-9 in the last 5 years vs Top 10 teams, and the 1 being Tech, who finished 13th.
Even last season when Richt supposedly “righted the ship,” we lost all four games to Top 10 teams (final poll), and have continued this new tradition this season.
So, thats 5 games vs Top 10 teams, 5 losses, and 3 of them in embarrassing blowout fashion, of course all on national TV.
And every year, some of m fellow Bulldog fans gripe about the lack of respect from ESPN commentators.
Hey don’t blame ESPN, blame your coach – he is the one who has presided over this decline – and it is a program still in decline. It has just been a decline made a little more tolerable with a couple of schedules with mainly lower half of the SEC opponents.

Now, CMR is hoping that SC loses to LSU and Fl to win the SEC east again.? You got to be kidding me. SC will not lose to Fl or LSU. LSU has no offense. Fl will be outmatched against SC. The only thing we can hope to do is run the table. Hope for a high ranking, to get into a quality bowl. The easy schedule has exploited our might D. Teams have been running and passing up and down the field on Ga. It Start In The Trenches. CMR shouldn’t praise the 2 running backs we have at Ga. We need Ol. Looks like the big boys on Defense are not the answer. I would rather have some players like LSU or SC. Fast and quick and not so big that they are plum lazy.

Vandy, Kentucky and Missouri played bettere against SC because although they don’t have equal atheltes at least they’re coaches are not overmatched too. The problem iwth these blogs is that UGA fans don’t really have an rational view of their team. It’s an upper mid-level SEC team … not among the elites. Ga was not going to run all over SCs Defense. I knew that, and I am not a coach. It is the Coaching. Coaching is the problem. Our team was not pumped up for the game. It was the coaching. “Winning the East?” Do what?
No thanks, I’ll gladly take 2nd place – that way we eliminate another BLOWOUT on National TV. It ain’t the losing that gets me – it’s the nature of our play in those losses. Good teams make UGA look like we belong in the Sunbelt, not the SEC.
Adjectives that come to mind: Pathetic. Soft. Feeble. Laughable. Predictable. Helpless. Clueless.
If Murray had told SC’s defense the plays he was about to run, they couldn’t have done any better shutting us down. On defense, we played as if SC was running plays we had never seen before. “What is this run up the middle – and how can we stop it?!?!” 6 minutes into the game, I stopped thinking about a win, and just worried about how bad it was gonna be. “Oh Lord don’t let Spurrier put 50 on us.”
Last year was a mirage. We let ourselves be fooled, even though we knew we lost to the better teams, we hoped it was a step in the right direction.
Saturday night proved we are on the same level we were on last year in the Dome games.

2- If we had run blocked better, I’d answer No.
3- If we had been more accurate at QB, no.
4- If we had tackled better, well, then I’d say no.
But Mark Richt:
1- You couldn’t passblock Clowney
2- Your backs didn’t run well
3- Your Qb completed less than 40%
4- SC broke tackle after tackle against your defense
Ok, we wern’t flat if:
1- Tom Brady had played QB for Georgia
2- Kirby Smart was the defensive coach
3- Had Bama’s OLine coach
4- Frank Beamer was the special teams coach
But Mark Richt: Brady isn’t your QB, Smart isn’t your DC, Friend is your OLine coach, and you don’t have a Special Teams Coach at all, much less Frank Beamer. So your team was flat.

I have been sick of CMR for years now but GA fans keep putting up with the mediocrity. How many of you are prepared to have a march to AD’s house to demand that he fire CMR? Not many. You prefer to just sit around and complain about his record or you post something here on line. If GA fans want a change, demand it and get in the GA admin’s face. It is easy to just complain. As a lifelong Bama fan, I can feel the Dawgs pain. Mark Richt is like Mike Shula, except he is a better recruiter. No fire – no desire that can be seen and it clearly rubs off on the team. I am convinced after seeing Nick Saban coach, that you have to be engaged and you have to get up in a player or two’s grill in order to set the tone; to show that you are fully invested in the sucesss of the program and you expect them to be as well.
Just an FYI – I have long hated the comment and excuse “but we are a young team”. Alabama had to replace 9 starters on defense, its best receivers, and a Heisman finalist at tailback. Throw in the fact that we only have 8 scholarship seniors on this years team and that excuse really does not work. It is all about coaching – if you don’t believe it, ask the Saints.

UGA does not deserve to be 12th or 14th or even in the Top 25. They are a complete and total fraud and facade under Richt and Bobo and Grantham.
Please let’s get a new coaching staff and start over again from scratch. I don’t care how long it takes to rebuild at this point.
I do not like the UGA football team anymore.
