Spurrier: ‘They can’t say they own us anymore, that’s for sure’

“Obviously this was a special one … beating three years in a row a school that used to own you. They can’t say they own us anymore, that’s for sure.”

— South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier on the Gamecocks’ first three-game winning streak in the history of the Georgia-South Carolina series, which UGA leads 46-17-2

“This was actually my 250th overall win as a coach [including college, NFL and USFL], and having it against the Georgia Bulldogs is special, too. That’s a team that used to beat my alma mater [Florida] very well. I’ve been fortunate as a coach against them, not so much as a player, but as a coach.”

– Spurrier, 15-5 as a coach against Georgia (11-1 with Florida and 4-4 with South Carolina)

“Like I told the guys, ‘The bad news is we took a whipping, but the good news is that we all took it together.’ I don’t think anyone could look in the mirror and say, ‘I had a great day, but the other boys didn’t.’ … We got beat by a very good team that was primed and ready to go.”

— Georgia coach Mark Richt

“It stings. We felt like we had a great rhythm offensively going on in the first five games. … [South Carolina has] a very talented defense all over the board. They’re up there with the best I’ve ever played.”

— Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray after the Bulldogs, who averaged 48.2 points per game in the first five, were held to one touchdown against South Carolina (that with less than two minutes remaining)

“This was the greatest atmosphere I’ve ever played in.”

— South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw

“He was pretty much reading me. If I got up field, he was going to take off running. … He made plays with his feet, and he was fast, faster than I thought he was.”

— Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones on Shaw, who had 78 yards rushing on 14 carries

“I think we did a good job tonight. That was our goal — to come out here and put pressure on [Murray] and cause a lot of conflict with the offensive line. … [Georgia’s] offensive line gave away when they were going to hike the ball, so I got a good jump on it.”

— South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney

“We just made a lot of bonehead mistakes. Giving up big plays, jumping offsides, turning the ball over — we can’t do things like that and win ballgames. … It was just lack of focus on our part. When that happens, it’s easy for a team to make a big play, and that’s what they did.”

— Georgia cornerback Sanders Commings

“They had us on our heels all night. You’ve got to give that defense credit.”

– Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo

“We gave up two touchdowns right off the bat on explosive plays. You can’t do that. … Give them credit. We dug ourselves a hole.”

— Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham

“I think our stadium was probably the loudest in the country today.”

– Spurrier

Sprurrier right back where he left off at Florida. Owning us. That Carolina team was impressive Saturday, and I take my hat off to them. We have some major shortcomings in Athens, And after 12 years, I really don’t think many folks can defend Richt anymore, other than being a fine man, we all know that. Great talent, plenty of money, great facilities, beautiful Campus…..It’s obvious what the problem is. And by being a great guy, and taking plentiful talent, and winning 8,9 ,10 games of lessor talent,,,,,we are stuck with this man. We are in year 4 without a signature win……and Florida last year….please…..there were bumper stickers in Florida that said ” honk if you’ve beat Florida”………. And beating Kentucky 24-7 will do little for me in the big scheme of things.

Folks, go back and reread your comments from these blogs from the past six years…and Richt is still reinventing himself and our team and still raking in the money. And we’re still an above average bunch of under-coached, out-manned, and under-achieving group of four and five star athletes. When will the love affair (and madness) end?

“The bad news is we took a whipping, the good news is we took it together.” Mark Richt

That is the DUMBEST thing I’ve ever heard. How is that supposed to encourage the team?

SEC East is between SC and UF. UGA will not be a factor. Spurrier will NOT allow this version of SC to lose. He is thinking National Championship and then he will “go to the beach”.

Why can’t we get a coach who doesn’t like to get humiliated by and run over by arrogant coaches like Spurrier who enjoy nothing more than to humiliate us and run as many points as they can. We need a coach that holds a grudge and has the balls to do something about it. I’m sick of college football, so I’m thinking getting as far away from it as I can. Hmmmmmm I thinking of moving to Athens.

What I saw last night that broke my heart…..We got knocked to the mat early, and couldn’t ( or wouldn’t) get up. Where o Where is that old Erk Russel Defense who would NEVER allow that to happen.

I’m not sold that SCar is going to win a national championship. They struggled with KY and Vandy and beat a way overrated UGA team. I just don’t see CAR beating the rest of their schedule unscathed, LSU, FLA, ARK, TENN, ALABAMA.

October 7th, 2012

I’m through with the hype as long as Richt is there. We will beat all the wussies on our schedule and lose to the 2-3 tough games, go to Tampa and play a big ten team like Michigan and proclaim how great we are. That’s Georgia football now.
The East is Now
1. Carolina
2, Florida
3. Georgia/ when we have a good team.

I will no longer visit Williams Brice stadium. Not because we got our rears handed to us, we did, hats off to Carolina they were clearly the better team. Their fans were starting crap everywhere. You have to walk through the hood to get to the stadium. A real crappy place for a stadium setting. I have never felt uncomfortable at any SEC venue, but I did there leaving the stadium. I am finally convinced CMR is not the person to take the program any higher. So sad when Carolina showed their current players in the NFL on the their jumbo screen compared to the numbers Georgia has; that tells you all you need to know. A real frustrated and down Dawg here.

True UGA fans are upset because our boys deserve better coaching and preparation such as a decent strength and conditioning program. Richt is 0-10 now against top 12 teams and 2-16 against the Top 25 since 2008. We are recruiting in the top 10 EVERY YEAR. Those players just don’t magically turn into average players. We are clearly underachieving and changes need to be made at the end of the season if not during the off week.

What this State Flagship University has:
1. The state produces top 5 out of 50 states D1 EVERY YEAR
2. Second most profitable Div 1 football program in the country
3. Beautiful Campus and college town atmosphere.
4. Broad curriculum
5 Above average football heritage

This question becomes….what’s missing? 12 years…..and as someone posted earlier….The last 4-5 years have been brutal against top tier ranked teams. Time for someone else to give it a try.

Lorenzo Ward was an assistent coach @Newnan, Ga hs. He knows the Atlanta area very well so recruiting in the state of ga shouldn’t be a problem for him. I wouldn’t have a problem if uga hired a minority hc who can relate to today’s athletes. Give a black man a chance Mr McGarity and while you’re at it, see if you can sway Brad Stevens to come and coach our basketball team. Recruiting will get better and a new basketball gym will be sold out every game. We will start winning championships in basketball and football because the state of ga is loaded with talent.

Guess 99% of you whiiners were over rolling CR and AM house last night. From some comments that appears to be the mentality. After whipping the Gators you will al be back on board again once again Dawh fans.

Prdcition that Carolina loses 2 in SEC and will not make Atlanta for SEC crown. This will be their best year ever, but will not win the SEC. Next year starts their decline back into oblivion.

GA Dawgs; when all is said and done, it was a great game and the team that played better last night won. It is not a conviction on your team, the dawgs have and always will be a great team! You guys can’t win every game, every time and while you don’t want to acknowledge, the gamecocks are finally playing, good, sound, football. This has nothing to do with your program but everything to do with ours! You guys will be fine and you will continue to win games; so will we!

Richt needs to clean house on offense like he did with the defense. Joe paterno could have coached a better offense and i mean his corpse and not when he was alive. It befuddles me how we have all these offensive woes in big games it is because he is being out coached by everybody. he was not that good of a college qb and he sucks as a cordinator.mike bobo.

I will never understand the UGA faithful, SC has their first complete game in two seasons and you dawgs become gun shy overnight…

You will never win anything whining like girls about it all, either man up and throw the brickor shut your pie holes and support the program at all levels.

This is what seperates winners and losers or elephants and dawgs….

Now go pull the dawg statues off the front porches and hang the 2010 Champion Auburn flags back up.

aaron murray cannot beat top teams, to short and inaccurate. The UGA defensive lineman are so FAT they are useless on the field of play. The UGA linebackers are to small to compete in the 3 / 4 defense. Todd Grantham is not a quality defensive coach, Spurrier made fun of him when hired, three years and three loses later he owns todd grantham, lots of points.

The truth: UGA is the most overrated team each year in college football

October 7th, 2012
7:28 pm

The Georgia players quit. Richt can’t win a big game. He is now 9-31 against ranked teams.

Spurrier is a better coach. Bobo is a joke. Grantham has been torched ever since the second half of the massacure by LSU last year. The D is a joke too.

It is time for Richt to go!

October 7th, 2012
7:30 pm

As long as Spurrier is at S. Car. and CMR is at UGA. Carolina is gonna be the owner of that game. Anyway I can’t see where UGA ever “owned” them. Wasn’t Donnan the coach the last time UGA beat them? The dogs better be ready for the Gators, or they’ll get the same whipping.

Lets’ see….the record now is Georgia has won something like 46 times vs Carolina’s 16 or 17 wins. Hmmmmmmmm…..Yes, it’s official…Steve Spurrier is as stupid as his classmates say he was while stealing a Heisman from Bob Griese at UF and when he never beat UGA as a player….ever… That’s a record he can never erase….ever. I think an unbiased observer would say that Georgia owns South Carolina. And I’m a UVa fan.

@ Drbasic1:

You sound about as christian as Russ/Uga 9 and your 6 year-old apparently does your writing but since M. Richt is a serious christian I feel certain he will share some of his MILLIONS with you even after your dastardly attempt at humor.

It is people like you that give IDIOTS a bad name.

Damn JB, stop dropping hints.

It’s okay to go on record as to what the reason is for us getting out butts handed to us 2 – 4 times per year.

It damn sure ain’t talent, or lack of.

I’ll say it – it is Mark Richt.

m an alumni and it hurts so bad to see this program fall like it has over the past few years… It is a program of cowards, which starts at the stop with Greg McGarity not having the strength to make a decision that should have been made 2 years ago. Instead, we have the most over paid coaches in history. The entire staff needs to be dismissed and we need fresh blood no matter the cost. Aaron Murray needs to go… I don’t care if he breaks ever record in UGA history; he will never be someone the fan base cares about. He is not a winner or someone that can lead any team to the promise land. I am quitting on this team like they quit on the field in Carolina last night. I am over it and the University will not get one more dollar from me until they make a change at the top of the program. I am going to encourage all of my fellow alumni to do the same…We cannot vote Richt out, but we can vote with our dollars and I implore you all not to use any of your dollars to support a program that will not give us what we ask for and deserve: HOPE! As long as Mark Richt and his band of dwarfs are here we will have no HOPE. I cannot keep the faith expecting good things to come down the road; I have been fooled too much over the past few years. UGA has become a C-USA program. We look good playing against teams less than us (the Tulane or Duke), but when it comes to teams like Bama, LSU, and I guess now South Carolina we see how mediocre we truly are now days…It is an embarrassment to this state, much the same as Tech is to the state… at least they don’t have talent. I know some will say that we will still we 10 games this year (and we may well do that), but we will lose to USC & UF in the only two games versus real teams all year… Most likely we will lose our bowl game too and I am afraid that people will feel like that is good enough to keep the coaches… Well, I am here to say it is not. I do not care that Mark Richt is a good Christian man. So am I, and if I don’t do my job well I would still get fired. Being a good man doesn’t make you a good coach…Just look at all the arrest and suspensions! Being a Christian means that you have salvation; it doesn’t mean that you become good at all you do, nor does it qualify you to do things that you really cannot do well. The results should speak for themselves and as far as I am concerned they do not meet where we should be as a program.
