No. 5 Bulldogs ‘Spurriered’ by No. 6 South Carolina, 35-7 (UPDATED)

COLUMBIA, S.C. — It’s starting to look like Steve Spurrier is going to be just as frustrating for Georgia at South Carolina as he was at Florida.
The Ol’ Ball Coach had his No. 6 Gamecocks clicking on all cylinders Saturday night against the No. 5 Bulldogs at Williams-Brice Stadium. In the most-hyped game in the history of this series, South Carolina jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back en route to a 35-7 victory.
The win was the Gamecocks’ third in a row over Georgia — the first time in the 118-year history of the rivalry they’ve done that — and makes Spurrier 15-5 as a coach against the Bulldogs. He was 11-1 as the Gators’ coach and 4-4 since he’s been at South Carolina. Including his stints in the NFL and USFL, it was Spurrier’s 250th career victory.
“Having it against the Georgia Bulldogs was special,” said Spurrier, who was 1-2 against Georgia as a Florida quarterback. “They are a team that used to beat my alma mater pretty well. I have been very fortunate against a coach as them, not so much as a player, but as coach, so that was special.”
The loss was kind of a double-whammy for the Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1) because Florida also scored a big 14-6 win over LSU Saturday in Gainesville. Georgia will need to the Gamecocks to drop two games and then have to beat what could be a Top 5 Florida team to return to the Georgia Dome as Eastern Division champions.
South Carolina (6-0, 3-0) plays on the road at LSU and Florida the next two weeks.
Georgia falls to 3-5 in top 10 matchups under coach Mark Richt and 3-10 when the ESPN College GameDay crew happens to be in attendance. The last time the Bulldogs won one of these marquee games was against Hawaii in Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 2008.
The Bulldogs will try to regroup during next week’s off week. They’ll resume play at Kentucky (1-5, 0-3) on Oct. 20.
“Tonight we weren’t very good,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “But the world didn’t end. We’ve still got a lot of things to play for and a lot of good things can still happen.”
The Bulldogs had boldly stated that their goal this year was to reach Miami and to play for the BCS championship. How, then, Richt was asked, can they be expected to rebound from such humiliating loss?
“They’ll be fine,” Richt said. “They’re supposed to dream big; I want them to dream big. They’re good men and they’re going to fight. They’ll come back together and win again.”
The Gamecocks’ offensive charge was led by Georgia native Connor Shaw. The junior quarterback from Flowery Branch who’s best known for his running ability,gashed the Bulldogs’ defense with arm as well. He finished with 162 yards on just six completions – an average of 27 yards per – and threw for two touchdowns. Shaw also had 78 yards rushing and scored an in-your-face touchdown on a 7-yard run with 6:17 remaining in the game.
“He was pretty much reading me,” said Georgia’s All-American outside linebacker Jarvis Jones. “If I got up field he was going to take off running. . . . He’s a good player. He made plays with his feet and he was fast, faster than I thought he was.”
South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore had yet another 100-yard game against Georgia. The junior from Duncan, S.C., had 109 on 24 carries and a touchdown, giving him 467 yards and 4 TDs in three games against the Bulldogs.
The Gamecocks finished with 392 yards against Georgia’s once-vaunted defense. After finishing fifth in the nation last season in total defense, the Bulldogs entered Saturday’s game 55th. They will drop again this week
“I don’t think that team is 35 points better than us, or whatever it was,” UGA senior cornerback Sanders Commings said. “We just made too many mistakes tonight; gave up some big plays, had some penalties, turnovers. You can’t win games like that.”
The most impressive part of South Carolina’s victory had nothing to do with Spurrier’s famous “ball plays.” It was defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward’s unit had Carolina on the verge of shutting out the Bulldogs for the first time since they lost to Alabama 31-0 in 1995. Georgia came in leading the SEC in scoring (48.2 ppg) and yards (536 ypg). The Bulldogs hadn’t scored fewer than 41 points in a game all season.
It was a tough night for quarterback Aaron Murray, who came in with the knock of having never beaten a ranked team on the road. Harassed all night by the Gamecocks’ rangy defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Devin Taylor, he completed just 11-of-31 passes for 109 yards and threw an interception. The Bulldogs, who finished with just 220 total yards, scored a meaningless touchdown in the game’s final three minutes with South Carolina’s victory well in hand.
“Very talented defense all over the board,” Murray said of South Carolina’s defense. “They’re up there with the best I’ve ever played. They’re definitely one of the top ones.”
This one was over quick South Carolina shot out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter on two long drives and a punt return for a touchdown.
The game could not have started any worse for Georgia. The Bulldogs won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, giving the Gamecocks the ball to start the game.
South Carolina wasted no time doing something with it. Gaining 62 yards on two pass plays, the Gamecocks covered 76 yards in 2:32 and scored on a 20-yard pass from Shaw to Bruce Ellington. On both passes South Carolina receivers for behind safety Bacarri Rambo.
The Bulldogs got a 48-yard kickoff return from Malcolm Mitchell and seemed poised to answer after a 15-yard run by Todd Gurley got the Bulldogs down to the South Carolina 34. But after a failed reverse, Murray’s pass was batted up in the air at the line of scrimmage by defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles and intercepted by a diving DeVonte Holloman.
South Carolina made the Bulldogs pay. Utilizing Lattimore in both the running and passing games, the Gamecocks again drove the field. Shaw threw his second touchdown of the night, a 19-yard strike to wide open tight end Rory Anderson. And just like that, the South Carolina led 14-0 with 6:29 still left in the first quarter.
Georgia had to punt after its ensuing possession, and that’s when the Gamecocks turned it into a nightmare night. After bobbling the catch, Ace Sanders recovered and returned the punt 70 yards for a touchdown. It was Sanders’ second punt-return TD this season and it put South Carolina ahead 21-0.
“It stinks,” Murray said of the lopsided defeat. “It definitely hurts a lot. We put a lot into this game. It definitely means a lot. But there’s still a lot of games to play. They’ve got a lot of tough games left and so do we. Right now they’re in the driver’s seat and we have to win every single game to make it to Atlanta. We’ve got to grind and work and we did that last year. But it’s not a good feeling.”

I’ve been a faithful DAWG fan since 1971. This is the most embarrassing loss ever in UGA history. It’s one thing to show up and put up a good fight (see LSU vs. FLA.) It’s another to not even show up and look clueless doing it. This is/has been a poorly coached team for years. Period. And the AD is just as bad. At least Damon Evans wasn’t afraid to play the best to further the UGA brand. Loading your schedule with cupcakes to make the coach look good is a mistake, I can’t even begin to imagine what Chris Peterson would/could do with all this talent. The UGA football team is a house of cards and a total, embarrassing joke. And Richt is the head clown. Time to cut bait and move forward. This man, as nice as he is, is just not a good coach. It’s time for a change and I can’t believe I’m even saying it. No excuse for this. When was the last time a CMR team beat someone they weren’t supposed to? It’s been too long and now they can’t even hang with teams they used to own. And Florida will embarrass us again. Unfortunately, the rest of the schedule is a joke, and CMR will skate by with another 2 or 3 loss season. It doesn’t faze Richt to get schooled by a guy like Spurrier. And therein lies the problem. So now I’ll hear the “get off the bus” and “bandwagon fan” comments. That’s fine. I’ll root for someone else because I enjoy good football. Not the crap that CMR and company teach. As much as it pains me to say it : Steve Spurrier is twice the coach Mark Richt is. End of story.

Everyone else said, UGA is playing a ranked opponent therefore UGA will lose.
Plus, it’s a night game on the road in front of fired up fan base, against the second best defense in the SEC, against a great QB, against a RB that owns UGA, with a defense that is overrated to the extreme, with a shrimpy QB and a lackluster coaching staff for the last decade or so.
You guys deserve to lose if for nothing else then it’s a riot to watch UGA fans lose.

That was one of the most pathetic performances I’ve seen by an offensive line in history. I’ve seen Division II teams hold up better than what I saw tonight.
The offense is the offense. Bobo is not going to change anything. Murray could have ran for as many 1st downs as Shaw. They were not even respecting the QB run on the shotgun hand offs.

First off, as much as i hate to say it, congrats to SC. You guys had a far superior team in all areas tonight! I really had high hopes but my biggest fears came true tonight. Being out coached, facing that bad a$$ defense, and early costly turnovers. I must agree that UGA would have won maybe 2 NC’s by now under Spurrior and that pains me to say. Maybe we have topped out and its time for Mcgarrity to take a closer look at the leadership and direction of this proud universities football team.

C’mon dawgfans – don’t throw the season away yet. A solid run to close it including a win against UF could land us in the SECCG again. Yes, for another a*%whipping by Bama, and another bowl game where you are outmatched.
That will provide sufficient optimism to propel Richt/Bobo/Grantham into next season for another September hypefest driven by wins over weak opponents. And then the stage will be set for another soulcrushing loss like tonite. As sure as the sun rises in the east. . .

Dear Georgia,
In our 33 years together, you’ve brought me nothing but empty promises. Every year you fill me with hope only to find some way to screw it up. Like a lover betrayed, you have always found a way to woo me back with your begging and cries of “we’ve changed.” I’ve lived through Peyton on Rocky Top and the Ole Ball coach in the swamp. I’ve watched the mad hatter, saban and some dude named chizik lead their flock to the promised land.
You might be able to win a SEC with one loss, but you can never win the crystal trophy when you lose 35-7 and bend over like you did tonight. See Spurrier do to you in Garnett what he used to do in orange and blue is the final straw.

Carolina has a better football program, a better basketball program, and a better baseball program. We have Adams, McGarity, Richt, Perno, an Athletic Board. All highly compensated. And the supporters, alums, and fans pay and support this kind of game. All routine and occur year after year
If Spurrier and his staff had prepared and coached out team this year we would still be undefeated. We would not have looked like the team Same at Tech. People of the state of Georgia deserve better teams than this..

Was so looking forward to this game and it went the way I was hoping but not the way I imagined. Georgia got E3d (EXPOSED, EXPLOITED, and EXCUSED} from any further mention of SECCG or National Championship contention. Let’s see two No, 2 pencils………check – one 200 page spiral bound notebook………check. Alright all those Dawg boasters you are go for excuse making. Nope not a GT troll or whatever yall call guys on here. Just a casual viewer who didn’t appreciate the snide remarks and the unwarranted negative comments about Alabama and specifically how the tornado that hit and killed a couple of years ago in Tuscaloosa should have done even more damage. What happen to all this talk that the Bulldawgs are going to run all over the Gamecocks? Guess someone forgot to inform the dawgs the Gamecocks probably have the best defensive front in the game with plenty of rotating second string players who could start for any SEC team. What happen to Gurley man? The twin dual running attack, did either one of them gain 50+ yards. Mean while as usual Lattimore runs over the defense for another 100+ yards. Maybe now you dawg fans will realize SC is no longer your easy win. Its 3 in a row and the dawgs have become just another average team the Gamecocks play every year. We dont even consider this game a competition any more on our schedule.
But thats what happens when you play cream puff teams and then play a team that HAS GROWN MEN PLAYERS!. If it wasnt for Coach Ward feeling sorry for you and taking his starting front 4 and 2nd team players out of the game, it would have been 35-0. But again, Im sure we will hear some good excuses from the fans, the coach, and the players. You got btch slapped and kick all night. I am not surprised that UGA lost, but I am surprised that they were whipped so bad. This team has behaved itself on and off the field, at least after the season started. There appears to be no dancing and celebrating tackles after long gains by the other team. Georgia loses to UF and wins out the other games, going 10 and 2 and gets a decent bowl against a northern team that probably turns out like the Outback Bowl.. Another ok season. Richt will never beat Saban and will not win a conference championship while Saban is at Alabama. Sad but true.

This was awful. Talk about exposed. OMG. Just completely awful. And it wasn’t a surprise. CMR is no more head coach mateiral than the Pope. Both are great people but miserable coaches. To think that CMR is leading this team anywhere is to simply be in complete denial of reality. What waste. Mark, PLEASE resign and give UGA the opportunity that the AD and the rest of the UGA community deserve even if they don’t have the guts to do something about. Just a totally pitiful showing.

He doesn’t know the rival games or when to win them, and has no disipline over the players..He bends over to the coach that hates UGA and has said so, and loves to beat them by as many points as they can and laughs about it, and Ricth will not retailiate by doing the same. Georgia derserves better than this and a Coach that can MAN UP and put it to the other SEC teams and let them know that when they play UGA that they are playing somebody that’s worthy of being in the SEC. So is Richt gone after this pathetic showing??? Is Grantham right behind him?? I mean lets look at this objectively…UGA and SC had relatively equal talent going into this game….and SC beats up severely on UGA in every aspect of the game…..getting pushed around on the offensive and defensive lines, beat on special teams plays, out-hustled, out- coached, mentally weaker, error-prone, no heart, mistake after mistake….basically, all that talent by SC utilized to the max. and all that talent by UGA WASTED time after time!!! That comes down to coaching, plain and simple….Grantham just gave up 44 points to UT and now 35 points to SC, and the sad thing is we just gave him an extension. Mark Richt 0-12 vs. top 25 teams since 2008… HE IS NOT A BIG GAME COACH!!! Aaron Murray 0-10 vs. ranked teams….NOT A BIG GAME QB…. So in conclusion we have a choke, scared coach paired with a choke, scared quarterback and a terribly overrated defensive coordinator…..and sadly, nothing will be done by Greg McGarity….He will proclaim this 9-3 season GREAT and give Mark Richt another 3 year extension….I cry myself to sleep as a dawg fan (seriously, its this bad…..)

Well ELEPHANT SQUASHES (fill in your team’s mascot) EVERYTIME, I just cannot bring myself to fill in my team’s mascot into your screen name. Know why? Because my Dawgs would beat you any place, any time, even after tonight’s near win in Columbia while we were tired. And for the record, that near win would have been an actual win if a game was 8 quarters instead of 4. I mean did you see the way we punched through that touchdown? We can’t be stopped when we get hungry and we worked up an appetite tonight.
Oh and I didn’t want anyone to get hurt in those tornadoes. So there.
