Georgia’s defense no match for Gamecocks

(Updated 11:50 p.m.)

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Remember the Georgia defense that ranked among the nation’s top five last season and expected to be even better this season?

It once again was nowhere to be found Saturday night.

The Bulldogs’ defense ranked an inexplicable 55th among FBS teams in yards allowed through this season’s first five games   and looked even worse in Game 6, a 35-7 loss to South Carolina in Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday night.

The Georgia defense was porous on South Carolina’s first two possessions, allowing touchdown drives of 76 and 69 yards that gave the Gamecocks a 14-0 lead and set the tone for what was to be a long night for the Bulldogs.  A special-teams touchdown –- a 70-yard punt return — stretched South Carolina’s lead to 21-0 with 5:18 still to play in the first quarter.

“We said we were going to fight back,” cornerback Sanders Commings said, “and unfortunately we couldn’t tonight.”

Any remote chance of Georgia getting back into the game seemed to slip away in the third quarter when the defense was burned on a long pass to the 1-yard line, setting up a score that gave the Gamecocks a 28-0 lead.

By the long night’s end, Georgia’s defense had allowed 392 yards. The Gamecocks ran for 230, including 109 on 24 carries by tailback Marcus Lattimore and 78 on 14 carries by quarterback Connor Shaw. Shaw, the dual-threat quarterback from Flowery Branch, threw only 10 passes but completed six of them for 162 yards, an average of  27 yards per completion.

“We  just made a lot of bonehead mistakes,” Commings said. “Giving up big plays, jumping offsides — we just can’t do  things like  that and win ballgames. … It was just lack of focus on our part. When that happens, it’s easy for a team to make a big play, and that’s what they did.”

On South Carolina’s first possession, South Carolina receivers twice got behind Georgia safety Bacarri Rambo for long pass plays –- 42 yards from Shaw to Damiere Byrd and 20 yards from Shaw to Bruce Ellington for the touchdown. Rambo recovered on the first to the point of almost intercepting the pass, but Byrd took it out of his hands.

On the Gamecocks’ second possession, the Georgia defense yielded a methodical 11-play drive that included a 16-yard pass from Shaw to Lattimore and a 14-yard touchdown throw from Shaw to wide-open tight end Rory Anderson.

“We gave up two touchdowns right off the bat on explosive plays. You can’t do that,” Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said. “We had a chance to make a play there [on the 42-yard pass to Byrd]. We didn’t.  Give them credit. We dug ourselves a hole.”

Another lowlight for the defense: South Carolina’s D.L. Moore ran past Commings  in the third quarter and caught a 62-yard pass from Shaw, going down at the 1-yard line. Lattimore scored on the next play.

“Us losing like this, I definitely don’t think they’re that many points better than us,” Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones said.  “We could have executed better, and we could have done a lot of things better than we did.  We can’t make excuses. It is what it is. They played well. They executed.  They  made plays.”

Said Grantham: “It’s tough when these things happen, but the thing you’ve got to do is, you’ve got to take an evaluation of yourself and say, ‘What have I got to do as a player and a coach to get better and work through it and make sure that we improve so that when we play in two weeks we’re a much better football team?”

I have been a supporter of MR but it’s time for a change, he cannot get a team ready for the big one, he shows no emotion, and this team was not prepared to play, this defense played undisciplined and the offense played scared, something had got to change. If it is me I am calling Jon Gruden, he has something Georgia needs a spark and a fire for the game.

OMG…….Magarity should clean house tomorrow. CMR should just quit after that debacle. Maybe he should spend more time coaching instead of making stupid commercials. Only nproblem with that is, he is in way over his head. That game just set the program back. No wins against ranked opponents in the last 10? Come on……..embarrasing. .

When we lined up in a power formation, we ran well… When we had a fullback and tight end in the game, we controlled the line of scrimmage enough… But 75% of our running plays were from the shotgun… We ran 4 plays from the 2 yard line out of the shotgun… That’s weak… Merritt hall and Lynch blocking and Gurley could get in every time from the 2…. You can’t run outta the shotgun against top defenses.. You must power the football… Exert your will… Bama powers it and plays a lot of 7 on the line of scrimmage inside and gets 1 on 1 on the outside… The bang it in in the red zone… Control the clock… Shorten the game… Our athletes are there but the formations don’t give them a chance… So frustrating… 4 plays from the 2 when we have Gurley… Block 2 TE, full back and power that thing in and break them… Every time we lined up shotgun spread, the SC defensive coordinator smiled… We could have run power… We did when we tried it but we didn’t stay with it… Florida ran 25 plays in a row on the ground with power formations today… How can you only put 5 on the line against them? Unbelievable

5 on the line of scrimmage… ? Seriously? Double both ends with 2 tight ends… Use the full back… Power running… Hershel would suck if he had to run against the pass rush out of the shotgun… Jesus…. I remember when Georgia ran the power I… our backs run 5 blockers on 7 defenders and they’re 5 yards deep on a slow developing bs read/draw lucky to get the line of scrimmage… Bs… I’ve never been more pissed at the coaches

Richt teams have no toughness. Never have, never will. He is simply too soft of a coach. McGarity should let the season play out, then fire every coach in December, then make a call to Kirby Smart. He has had to learn a lot from Nick Saban over the years, and Saban’s teams are tough, not a bunch marshmellows.

At last, I bow to the naysayers. Georgia has not, can not and will not beat a ranked team. CMR has superior athletes but loses to inferior teams. We are mid SEC tier and that is what it is. And tonight our D QUIT!!! Shame on them. But at least CMR kept his hair hand combed and his nostrils clean…DISGUSTING!

Oh, and the D quit while the O did not even show up. When does Brice Ramsey arrive on campus, next game?

The best team won, South Carolina totally dominated UGA offensive line. Once they fell behind 21 points their guys could just tee off. It was fun for the first 4 games though. Go Falcons

Ga. has good skill people, but in the trenches we are terrible. I watched several of our Def. Lineman and they got pushed around all night long. Weight does not equal strength. Our Offensive lineman are not only slow, but weak as well. You’d never know they spent a second in the weight room.

The team is undisiplined because Mark is undisiplined. He wasn’t disiplined at FSU and he isn’t disiplined now. And on top of all this, he is just not the smartest guy or coach in the world. We have Georgia coaches at Florida and at Alabama, but not at Georgia. Something is wrong! He’s a nice guy who needs to be coaching at Duke.

You either lose because of Talent or Coaching. Per NFL, Ga. has had, and currently has tons of NFL talent, so that leaves the Coaches.

I mean, you don’t ask Kenarious Gates or anyone else to block Clowney 1 on 1….. Or the other end, devin TAYLOR… Did you not read the scouting report? Could you have put Jay Rome and Kenarious Gates double teaming and frustrating Clowney all night? Could you not have employed Arthur Lynch on every down on the right side doubling taylor with the right tackle? A Full back to help with the run blocking? We’d rather run when we are outmanned and ask our backs to do everything on their own…. Could you not just put 2 Wide receivers out there one on one…. One on each end, you know, split ends? You know, like the #1 team in the country… South Carolina lined up to outman and overmatch us and we never realized the adjustment… We did for like 3 plays with lynch and Hall in the game and then we went right back shotgun on the frickin goal line….? 2 TE breaking down the middle after blocking? We have lost all the best parts of our offense… Those who love old school georgia football are sad to see such a pitiful gameplan on offense… To continually allow your line to be outnumbered and keep calling plays that you can’t block is ridiculous… When we had power formations(rarely). Gurley got 7-10 yds… But we wanted to go shotgun 4 plays in a row from the frickin 2 yd line…

Boo wouldnt have done sh@$ on the shotgun draw…. He ran well because of effort; but by that point he was running behind a full back and 2 tight ends out of the I formation… We shoulda done that from the 2, 4 times in a row in the first half….. Larry Munson would hate this team because he would never get to say, ‘Dawgs in the I’. Tailback U aint shotgun all night… Why not take pressure off the offensive line with TE’s and take advantage of premium backs…. Would’ve liked to see Marshall run behind lynch and hall.. What about a double TE formation with lynch and Rome and Hall FB… Those freshman would’ve got loose… Terrible play calling.. Pass happy bs bobo richt crapola…. You have to play power football… Where is grown man football… Mano e mano.. If u win congrats… SEC football is war… Dawgs try too much finesse… Too cute… =as@ whoopin… I’m so pissed right now I could lose it

” And tonight our D QUIT!!”

I disagree. They held SCAR to 14 points from the 1st quarter to midway through the 3rd. They had 6 or 7 stops in a row. The offense couldn’t even get a 1st down after those stops.

If you can’t block them with 5 or 6(RB), you better try 7 or 8…. After 1 series, it was obvious that Gates couldn’t block Clowney…. And the other tackle couldn’t block Taylor.. But Georgia coaches did not give the tackles help except very briefly… We had 4 wideouts and 5 lineman getting manhandled… Did I mention I am slightly upset? Gurley and No blockers… Unreal

It’s one thing to lose – I never expected CMR to beat a top 10 team, let alone the OBC, but to quit amidst adversity is truly pathetic. Teams are a reflection of their coach , who has no fire in his belly to get his guys to ‘man up.’ With all our talent , we can’t compete against ranked teams , which is a pitiful reflection of inept coaching. I have supported CMR since he arrived in Athens, but now I agree with the naysayers- we have gone as far as we’re gonna go with Richt. It’s time to bite the bullet and start over with a new coaching staff who gets the most , not the least, out of his players.

Outer Banks: It’s like they had no idea that Clowney was going to be a factor in the game. No adjustment once they saw he was dominating #72. The entire team looked totally unprepared.

I know it’s a small complaint in a complete debacle but why did we sent out our fair catch punt returner at the end of the 1st half. We had a shot to return one into FG range and maybe even better and we sent out the white guy to fair catch the ball with 10 yards separation. It made no sense.

CMR should do the honorable thing and announce he is resigning at season’s end. If not, McGarrity should announce that this will be his last season. Richt can finish out the season to keep his commitment to these players, but enough is enough. UGA is a top 5 job with its resources and we’re fielding a mid-tier program.

Baccari Rambo looked like an overhyped, over-rated DB, with no chance of going in the first two or even three rounds of the draft. Lay off the doobies, Baccari, quit hangin’ with the homies, and study the playbook. You’re missing coverages and blowing assignments! Same for Sanders Commings. Neither of these suspended DBs really looks ready to play.

And the criticisms of Aaron Murray and his ability to handle tall defensive linemen look more and more believable. Murray may be no shorter than Drew Brees, but he has a long way to go in dealing with tall pash rushers.
