ATHENS – After several days spent watching tape of South Carolina’s defense, Georgia offensive line coach Will Friend was struck by what he had not noticed.
“I was … trying to remember when I saw one score [against the Gamecocks],” Friend said. “I couldn’t think of a team I saw cross the goal line yet.”
It has happened, but rarely.
South Carolina’s defense has allowed only five touchdowns out of 67 opponent drives this season, meaning the opposition has scored a touchdown on 7.5 percent of its possessions. Contrast that to Georgia’s offense, which has scored 31 touchdowns on 74 drives, a 41.9 percent rate.

How well Georgia's offensive line protects QB Aaron Murray will be key against South Carolina's tall, tough defense. (Photo/UGA Sports)
All of which should make for a compelling clash Saturday night in Columbia.
Georgia’s offense has averaged 48.2 points and 536 yards (287 passing and 249 rushing) per game. But how will it fare against a defense that has allowed just 11.2 points and 289 yards (78 rushing and 211 passing) per game?
The answer starts with how Georgia’s offensive line, a question mark when the season began, fares against South Carolina’s vaunted defensive front, which is led by a pair of towering ends in 6-foot-6 Jadeveon Clowney and 6-8 Devin Taylor.
“We understand the impact they can have on the game, so we’re going to try to do something that can help thwart that,” said right guard Chris Burnette, the only Georgia offensive lineman available for interviews this week. “I feel like whenever you play in the SEC, you are playing against top-tier talent, always. But this defensive line really has a high reputation around the league and the country as guys who are great at getting to the quarterback and stopping the run.
“We definitely know that we are challenged, and we are going to take it head-on.”
One of the bigger challenges awaits freshman right tackle John Theus, playing just his sixth college game. “Yeah, [this week] is a little bit different,” Friend said with a laugh that emphasized the understatement, from what Theus has experienced thus far.
Clowney, a sophomore, and Taylor, a senior, have combined for 30.5 career sacks — 13.5 and 17, respectively. This season, Clowney has 5.5, second most in the SEC, and Taylor 1.5. As a team, South Carolina has 22, most in the SEC. The Gamecocks’ defensive front, responsible for 18 of the sacks, is stout against the run, too, allowing just two rushing touchdowns in five games.
“I saw where one of those ESPN expert guys thought we had the best defensive line in the country with those two ends and our inside guys [tackles Byron Jerideau and Kelcy Quarles], who are pretty dang good players also,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said.
Georgia’s starting offensive line has been stable this season: Kenarious Gates at left tackle, Dallas Lee at left guard, David Andrews at center, Burnette at right guard and Theus at right tackle. The group’s easier-said-than-done challenge Saturday is to provide passing time for quarterback Aaron Murray, whose fumble after being sacked by Clowney late in last year’s game sealed South Carolina’s victory, and running room for tailbacks Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall.
Teams have had more success throwing against South Carolina’s secondary than running against its defensive front, suggesting potential opportunity for Murray if his line protects him.
Not surprisingly, the Gamecocks’ towering defensive ends came up during the quarterback’s weekly treat of his offensive linemen to ice cream.
“We talked about it,” Murray said. “I know they are extremely excited for the challenge, and they’ll be ready to go.”
So far, they have a record of responding to challenges, dating to the start of spring practice.
“In the spring, they knew they weren’t very good. Especially early on, it was just really bad,” coach Mark Richt said this week. “They knew they got better [during the spring], but they knew they had a long way to go. I think that really helped them have a great summer.
“They all decided to get up at 6 a.m. together every time they worked out. They all showed up, and they worked. They knew they better get better in a hurry. Then in [preseason] camp, things started to come together.”
On Saturday, in a game between top-10 teams, the progress of Georgia’s offensive line will be definitively measured.
“This game will definitely be the best gauge,” Richt said. “South Carolina’s defense is playing great. They’re not playing good; they’re playing great. They are kind of used to playing great.. … Without a doubt, this is the biggest test for our offensive line.”
– Tim Tucker
South Carolina’s defense by the numbers (with SEC rank in parentheses):
Touchdowns allowed: 5 (T-1st)
Points allowed per game: 11.2 (2nd)
Sacks: 22 (1st)
Total yards allowed per game: 289 (3rd)

I hope we run some things to slow down the pass rush – draws, QB draws, and heaven forbid, a screen or so. Quick-hit passes to the TEs and RBs.
Bobo better leave the slow developing plays alone this week.

I’m a staunch believer in defense wins championships. If UGA’s D was playing to the hype at the begining of the year I would say that UGA wins this one. However, as much as I hate to say it, SC’s D will slow down the run tremendously and make us one dimensional. Not feeling it for this game. SC’s D wins this one 17-10.
Trust me, I hope our offense can prove me wrong!!

Throw out both team’s OOC cupcakes and they have played three SEC teams: Georgia destroyed Vandy, beat Mizzou by 21, and beat UT in a game very similar to last year’s SC game. As for SC they have played Vandy (eked by), Mizzou (won by 21 also), and crushed Kentucky after not showing up in the first half. SC’s stats ought to look good; they’s played a weak schedule. Their D is good but it will give up more than one home run and several bombs Saturday. Dogs outscore and outpace the Lattimore offense.

Correct me if I am wrong, but SC has not played Georgia’s offense this year. Vandy was on the edge of beating them. Missouri in their first ever road SEC game showed they were not ready. Kentucky offered little. Georgia scored 51 points with over three minutes left in the third quarter, all by the offense. That means they scored the 51 in two quarters and twelve minutes. pretty good huh. so who is SC???????

Billy Joe, probably to date, Auburn 45-7 last season, 4 TD passes – you know the same Auburn that beat SC. He also beat UF, and UT twice, and murdered Vandy by 45, while you boys sneaked a 4- point win.
I’ll admit Murray lost to our 4 biggest oponents last season, but it was a team effort, not just Murray that lost.

Yes, the talent is there no doubt, but if you have told me even with the suspensions that our defense would look this average coming into the SC game at the start of the year, I would have said you are crazy. Again, I sure hope they prove me wrong.
I never would have thought this year that I would worry more about the defense than offense. If this offense can run for at least 150 yards it will keep the passing game open and give us a chance.
I don’t buy Latimore not being effective in this game. He might not be at 100%, but he has played in the game twice and has shredded us both times. He will be up and ready for tomorrow.
Heck, I guess that’s why we play the game. A shoot out would favor us so let’s do hope for a high scoring game.

Last year, the DAWGS had the game under control except for that fateful play when Clowney cakewalked thru the line and grabbed Murray. It was not a missed block. It was an ignored block! It was like Murray was given to Clowney! Murray has to learn to turk the ball and hopefully live for another play. Even Spurrier said after the game that they dodged a bullet! That play was the turning point of the game.
Well, I believe the DAWGS are better this year in spite of the stats on the defense indicating otherwise. They seem to rise to the occasion when they have to. They are on a mission and know the importance of this game and should come out fighting. They will leave it all on the field. Clowney has put a new wrinkle in his charge thru the line. He likes to spin while raising his arm over the defender’s head and speed past him. He’s clever, huge and fast. A small man protecting Murray is not going to stop him. Remember the team’s slogan: “Our Team, Our Time, No Regrets”! GO DAWGS!!!

Flat Tire, whenever you say that, it diminishes all the good football points you make on here. sooner or later, you need to come to terms that Richt is here as long as he wants to be here, and move on. I had to do the same thing when McGarity rolled out the new contract.
This year’s Dawgs has a shot to be special, but if we stay true to form under Richt, we will lose a game or two. If we lose tomorrow, we’ll probably lose again in Jax, be runner-up in the East, go 10-2 and go to Tampa for New Years, and McGarity and the Athletic Dept will be tickled pink.

I honestly don’t think Carolina’s defense isn’t as good as it was last year, mainly due to the absence of Melvin Ingram (spelling?). Don’t get me wrong, they’re still very good, but Ingram was a game-changer. He was the reason why Carolina beat us last year.
However, our offense put 42 points on them last year, and our offense is FAR better this year than it was last year. So, by extension, if Georgia’s offense is better and Carolina’s defense is a little bit less than last year, I expect us to be able to move the ball pretty well.
As for Carolina’s offense, it’s not going to put up nearly as much yardage or points as UT did. Carolina’s offense just isn’t explosive like that. Their O-Line also isn’t anywhere near UT’s. Our defense also has a smaller number of targets to focus on: Lattimore and Shaw. Carolina doesn’t have a single receiver on the level of Cordarelle Patterson or Justin Hunter now that Alshon Jeffry’s gone.
As for our defense, I think we’re going to be much improved this week: we won’t be perfect, but there was clearly some rust and miscommunication going on against UT. I don’t think either of this things will show up against Carolina.
Mainly, though, if we don’t turn the ball over, we win.
This won’t be a blowout by any means: I think it’ll be between a 3-7 point spread. Certainly no more than 1 score, and I think we come outta there with a win.

Gosh, looks like the press, Las Vegas, the TV experts, and the South Carolina coaches and players have declared this game won by the Gamecocks. Maybe the Dogs don’t even need to go over to Columbia, just mail in the loss. Then again, maybe not. I think teams that play lots of Thursday night games and which have no history in games of this magnitude don’t know what’s about to hit them. Georgia beat Steve Spurrier every time they played him in Jacksonville when he was a player at Florida and they are going to beat a Spurrier led team tomorrow night. Bank on it.

Everyone talks about talent on both sides of the ball, but have you seen USC’s defense? It’s OUTSTANDING. There will be no high scoring game Saturday evening. On the other hand, USC’s offense is very pedestrian. When they score points, it’s because their defense gets so many 3 and outs, that the offense has more opportunities. How we handle the defense will determine the game. I doubt that Gurshall will have many yards, but they may get more than what has been acheieved by the teams before. I’d say about 7 yards each. If we block the ends, our passing offense and utilizing the TIGHT ENDS, we can dink and dunk out way down the field. Get the backs out in space and HOLD YOUR BLOCKS. Anyone who thinks this will not be a one touchdown or less game is fooling themselves. Dawgs SHOULD win, but it’s in Columbia. I agree with the 2 point spread favoring USC, but I hope I’m wrong.

I wish I had time to go back and find it, and don’t quote me, but someone posted some data on the relation of UGA offense vs. defence rankings and vice versa for SC. The stats seemed comparable. UGA has played lesser defences than SC but SC has played lesser offense than UGA. That is why opposing sides of the ball look so good for UGA O vs. SC D.
This is going to be a killer game. To many if’s. Hope the Slobber Mouths (Dawgs) are hungry for some chicken. GATA!!!!!

It does seem to be a continual theme according to the talking heads always pick something about UGA’s opposition that is “the best in the country” line. Tennessee wasn’t overrated. Not as good as they played but if anything very underrated. They will beat someone this year. Vandy, Mizzou, all hyped and overrated, Carolina falls in there with them

My pick this week has drawn some negative attention by Chicken fans and even by Dawg fans…. However this is how I see it. I think UGA will have a few big plays and contain Shaw. Lattimore will get 100 but not 200. Murray will get his monkey off his back about beating a top team.
And most importantly… Jarvis Jones will be back and have 3 sacks against a suspect Oline. Sanders Commings is going to have a pick-6 because of the pressure as well.
Also, Columbia is the arm-pit of the south and I dread going there… But is is going to be awesome to see you leave disappointed in the 3rd quarter.

Not trying to get in a pissing contest with a UGA fan, but that doesn’t make sense, Flat Tire – “a couple of big boosters.” Big boosters are a dime-a-dozen in a Athletic Dept that finishes in the Top 2 in the country in net income every year – even in ‘09 and ‘10.
If a coach doesn’t get fired after those 2 pitiful seasons, along with the off-field difficulties going on, he damn sure won’t get fired when he’s winning 10 games, with an occasional trip to he SECCG.

The bulldogs have never had an offense that scored this many points and with this many yards. Just stop and consider that for a minute before you dismiss them. We have had some great teams, but none of them have had the kind of number we are putting up. Our D is doing enough to win. Expect the same from UGA tomorrow. This team does not quit. This is the first UGA championship-caliber team we’ve seen in a while. Give them some credit.

I understand why dawg fans are hesitant to believe the hype — they are tired of getting let down. But when we are playing this well, you just can’t ignore it. We will probably give up a some yards running and passing, but I expect some turnovers and big plays from the dawgs that will be the difference. I say a 3 TD margin of victory for the dawgs. The only way we lose this one is if we self-destruct.

Relax folks our Defense will show up and be just fine. Rambo and Tree were 4 games behind everyone else, and their rust threw the defensive timing off, now that they have a game under their belts we’ll be fine.
Also, let’s not forget of the 44 pts Tenn scored the offense was responsible for 21 of them ( pick 6 and 2 turnovers deep in our own territory), plus Tenn’s offense is the best we’ll see in the reg.season
The defense won’t be the problem, what they have to do is PROTECT THE BALL. We can not have costly turnovers. As far as Carolina’s defense, they are very good, but let’s get real they have not faced anything remotely close to the Dawgs offense. (please don’t even try it with Missouri). Kentucky led them 17-7 at half time last week.

I’m not one of those franatic USC fans, but I do bleed gamecock blood. I think Carolina will try and keep the UGA offense off the field and will be successful the majority of the time. Problem is, UGA won’t be shut down the whole game. If we can score enough points, say 24, I think our D can hold on for us. But if UGA gets rolling, they will be hard to catch and USC’s offense isn’t necessarily built to get into a scoring contest. Neither team has faced an even good defense before, but UGA has faced TN, which is high powered and #2 in the SEC. I would be lying to say I’m not VERY nervous about this game.

I love that everybody, even some Dawg fans, have given up on the idea that our D is top-notch. I think they could wind up being the story of the game. But, I thought they would play better last week, too. You can talk about SC’s great ends, but we have some great players, too…a whole bunch of them. I will be surprised if they don’t make a big statement in Columbia. Our O hasn’t been validated by beating a great D yet. We should see what they can do Saturday. Go Dawgs.

I hate to say it but I don’t see this ending well for the dawgs. Maybe i’ve become accustomed to losing big games like this for the past 3 years. Although I am a Gamecock fan I think I can be objective. Carolina has not seen an offense like this in quite a while. UGA’s defense does not have to be spectacular to slow down USC. UGA has the ability to blow out SC. SC does not have the offensive firepower to blow out UGA. IF UGA eliminates silly mistakes they win the game. Sad but true.

THE GAME IS PLAYED ON THE FIELD. If 5 and 4star recruits were the only basis for predicting games then UGA should be undefeated against SCAR. UGA consistently has more talent but lately, SCAR has had better coaching.
I love that ESPN is giving SCAR no respect! Spurrier loves it. This will be an unpredictable game because no one knows how bad the SCAR O or UGA D is.
Keep in mind SCAR beat UGA, FL, TN, Clemson, and Nebraska last year so these days – we know a thing or two about BIG GAMES.
I can tell that UGA is searching for a place to find confidence but they need to go back to 2009 and figure out when they last beat a ranked team. Looking forward to a big time game at WB.

If we have no turnovers that are deep in our territory Georgia will win this one 24-17. We are use to trying to kill the clock in the 4TH Quarter and really don’t know how to finish a game but hopefully Bobo will let Murray play for 60 minutes . The key to who wins will be how we both play the 4TH Quarter. I hope it is cool and not humid because Conditioning will decide this one. Which team has something left in the 4TH Quarter.

Bobo’s going to have to do better on the play calling; we can’t be so predictable with the run in this game. If that D gets a handle on Bobo’s patterns like Tennessee’s did, we’re done for. I liked the old days, when CMR would go into a big game and call a long pass to start the game, like against Clemson in ‘02 or ‘03, when Greene bombed it to Freddy Gibson on the first play. Mitchell reminded me of Freddy last year – we oughta go out there and bomb one early, just to set the tone, show ‘em we’re not going to be the same old conservative UGA.

The whole line on Murray is simply psychological warfare, trying to get in Murray’s mind. It won’t work. Murray is smart and tough. Murray does great against ranked teams. The whole team wins or loses. As a rf Freshman he played the National Championship winner and jumped way ahead with 21 points in the 1st quarter. He outgunned the opposing QB by a large margin–a QB who won the Heisman, the NC, and went at the top of the draft. Murray threw no picks, and racked up 100 more yards than Newton, while Newton had a pick–he did run three miles on our D. Murray led UGA to 31 points. The D failed to contain Auburn’s powerful O. That was as a Freshman! Murray has nerves of steel and he is a winner. I wouldn’t trade him for any QB in America!

UGA hasn’t lined up a against a quality D-Line yet this year. USC’s DEs will be in the backfield, so USC gets pressure without having to blitz = Aaron Murray getting pressured = inability to move ball, interceptions, turnovers = exposed.
Final Score: USC 34 UGA 23

lol at UGA fans trying to claim major victories over teams that were exposed later. I guess La Monroe gets credit for beating a top 10 team this year. Oregon St also beat a top 15 Wisconsin team. Pittsburgh beat a top 15 team as well. Gotta love the magic of manipulating numbers in hopes that people will think you beat somebody worth beating.

As much as I hate to take time to correct you. The teams were ranked when he beat them. More importantly, Murray wasn’t the issue in the losses. He was ahead of Auburn as a Freshman and LSU last year by large margins. If our receivers had caught balls put in their hands, it would have been more dramatic last year. Other parts of the team broke down and we lost both games. Attacking Murray for problems not of his making is like treating a virus with antibiotics. Murray just isn’t the problem. His poise, quick release, and pinpoint accuracy put us ahead of two great teams.

For some reason I dont see the pendulum swinging anywhere even if the SEC doesnt win it this year

SC does have a *great* line, but so did Auburn in ‘10 when they won the NC. Murray, as a rs Freshman, showing poise and ability beyond his years, lit them up for 21 points in the 1st quarter, and he certainly played well enough to win. The big difference is that Murray now has a great D (I believe) behind him, and he has a strong running game, too. The Murray big game trash talk is a myth.

Bob, both are valid, but different measures. Why? Remember, that injuries, suspensions, improvement by teams, and many, many other variables affect team play. Team play isn’t static for the year. For instance, Alabama lost to Florida in the SECCG in ‘08 and then they were upset in their bowl. Everybody thought they looked flat and not up to par. When the team’s NC hopes were dashed, they let down. I think the better question is whether you should try to pin that on Murray. Murray has seldom been the problem. Also, teams that get beat move down in the rankings. I looked at how many top ten teams(end of the year method) Alabama has beaten in the 10-12 season, and it was very few, top ten wins. I think they beat two teams that were top ten at the end of the year, and they lost to one of those in the season.

I don’t think UGA wins by two or three touchdowns, but I don’t think USC can hold UGA’s offense down for the entire game. It will be around a touchdown (give or take a field goal) in favor of UGA. I’d say 27-20. But on talent alone, UGA is very much superior. It just matters as to which school’s talent plays better as a TEAM and Spurrier is hard to beat.
If UGA’s offense gets mired in mud and don’t get any first downs during the fourth quarter (like we seem to do all the time), USC WILL come back and beat us. That I am confident about.

No doubt the SC defense is good.Really good. Murray will be in the shotgun all night, we will certainly miss Mr. Bennett catching and maybe even more we’ll miss his blocking, best of luck to you Michael. The key to me is wearing this defense down, we have enough skill players to try to get to the outside, I think we can wear the defense down and open up some running and passing lanes, because believe me, its gonna be tough to run through the tackles for either freshman.I think Richt has to take some chances to pull it out as in the Florida game last year.

Not sure any rational fan is confident who will win tomorrow. However, IMO the important key for UGA is establishing the run. If we do, then the D-Line will have to respect the run first which should give Murray more time and allow our defense to be fresh during the 4th quarter.
If we are averaging greater then 5 ypc, then we will win. Otherwise, our key to winning will be turnovers and special teams.

A lot of hype is going to cause a meltdown by some UGA fans after Saturday night….
The last time UGA went on the road the “great and mighty Gurshall” had the following stats against a average Missouri defense..
22 rushes for 98 yds or 4 yds a carry. That number is skewed somewhat by one long run of 44 yds meaning that the rest of the time they had 21 rushes for 54 yds or 2.1 yds a carry….
Unless UGA can improve on those dismal stats, AMurray is going to be at the mercy of the dominant SC DL and it is lights out.
National Rankings:
Rushing defense:
Missouri 26 SC 7 by the way…UGA ranks 57

This might be stating the obvious, but I am pretty well convinced that this game comes down to how effective the UGA running game is; no run game and our passing game gets crushed, too. We are outmatched at the line, but a good back (of which I think we have two) has to be able to step up in a situation like this and carry the load (See Marcus Lattimore). This game is ALWAYS close, and I expect the same tomorrow: Dawgs 30, Cocks 26.

You are so right man. I wish all responses on here could be as accurate as yours are. Aaron Murray is going to thrash the SC defense. Didn’t UK score 17 on that D in the first half last week? Didn’t UF completely shut down UK? Why didn’t the mighty SC defense replicate that? Let me guess they did it on purpose. SC is more overrated than FSU this year. Gonna get exposed Saturday night on your home field. Hilarious!

I am watching all the games this weekend with a lot of my GT friends and UGA friends. I am a UGA grad. I really think Clemson has a dynamic offense and would score a ton of points on most teams. However, I think you guys will score on them as well because their D isn’t that great. Obviously Auburn is terrible this year and they gave Clemson a good game in the dome. It won’t be as bad as people think if your offense hasn’t given up on the season. I see a Clemson win and by 17 – 21 points but it will be a high scoring game.

I think this is fairly accurate but could get a lot worse. Clemson will have Watkins back for this game. That makes a huge difference. The way I look at it, they will score 90-100% of the time. We will probably score 60-75% of the time if we are motivated. That should translate into at least a 14 point loss.

Man, I am excited for a good showdown!!!
Michael Bennett was one of the most underatted recievers by outsiders looking into our program, but I felt as if Murray often relied on him to many times. Sometimes AM never took his eyes off of him in the short passing game, which is dangerous. AM does a good job in spreading the receptions around and I believe this will force him to do it even more. Good luck to Bennett in recovery but this may actually cut down or AM’s interceptions. I just hope we can run it up the middle on SC. The DE’s will have the outside lanes blocked up even during a pass rush. Maybe hard with our smaller center, but that guy has some heart.
We need some quick screens on the outside to slow down the rush from those DE’s (another place Bennett will be missed for blocking down field)
I am not worried about our skill on defence, it is the play calling I am worried about. Grantham in a heck of a coach in teaching skills and maneuvers, but his play calling gets to me. We played off the recievers by 10 yds for 80% of the time against UT. It was like we couldn’t figure it out, then we got gashed on rushing.
I expect the opposite during the SC game. I see alot of Zone-Read play action passing in the first quarter then Lattimore hitting it hard in the second half. Hunker Down Dawgs!!! It is going to be a good one.

Not that im not worried about S. Carolina but they have beaten 5 teams with a combined record of 8-16.
With Missouri being 3-2 and they played the tigers at home. Their closet game was with Vanderbilt where the gamecocks faired 17-13.
Their Defense hasnt been tested with the recievers and running backs Georgia has yet so far this year.
Yes its a SEC School, yes their a very good team with a great coach. But dont get caught up in the hype that S. Carolina has a great scary Defense.
Theyve been untested to date and havent faced a team with as many talented offensive players like Georgia has.
What will help S. Carolina with their defense will be playing at home but not the statistics they have gained this year.
No im not implying Georgia will accumalate 500 total yards of offense because its always close. But fearing the stats of an unproven Defense that hasnt played anyone this year is yet is overreacting.
Georgia’s defense is better than S. Carolina’s defense but hasnt played up to their potential.
I look for a close game but i think in the end Georgia will win by 12 pts.
I think you can throw out stats in any SEC Game which is covered by the media to create more hype for ratings.
I think Georgia’s defense has alot to prove and i think it will come down to penalties and turn overs.

I am never one to argue back and forth with other commentors (save for GTBob) but I am only arguing the strength of schedule that everyone thought was going to be so easy for Dawgs. The games have changed and the SECEast is very balanced now.
I never pull for UF, but I hope that demolish LSU this year just so there will be no more crybabies about our schedule when we meet up in JAX. Who else beside Bama and LSU is relavent in the west. I will say that A&M is on fire now. UF already took care of them.
UGA has got to whoop up on SC, win a close one in JAX, and tear a Tiger apart against Auburn (who played close with LSU), and everyone will hush hush.
When the SECCG comes around with Bama, who knows???? I know Bama has depth, but if those poor young gentlemen keep getting busted up, no team can withstand it.Bama’s O-Line is sketchy, one week they look like the best in the nation, they get pushed around.

A great fallacy is people attempting to determine who has a “weak or soft” schedule before a game is even played. UGAs isn’t much different this year from last year yet at the end of the year it will have been completely different.
My advice is tell those naysayers on soft schedules that they don’t know what the h3ll they are talking about. We are almost midway of the season and the soft schedules still can’t be determined. Bama’s schedule to date has been softer than Georgia’s. Who would have thought that on opening day? I didn’t

It might be a tad optimistic, but I am making it with the assumption that this will be a high scoring game. GT scored on 72% of the drives in the UVA game. In the Miami game GT was scoring at will until CPJ started calling conservative plays to kill the clock. They were on a streak of 5 touchdowns in 6 drives up until then. MTSU was just a train wreck with a demoralized team, and plenty of turnovers. Could they come out completely demoralized again? Sure. I don’t think so though.

I thought he was when the hire was made. But the cream has a way of rising to the top. In this case it was a turd. Not all his fault. Your school and athletic department has a way of denying it likes football. Until they come out of the closet and proclaim it with some higher level of commitment, you will sadly always strive to reach the mid tier programs. Moobs is a bad coach at the higher level. When faced with 2 DEs that are clearly better than your tackles and can beat a double team, a good OC will come up with a package to neutralize the DEs. That is the zone read in today’s football. Once the QB reads the path of the DE, he decides whether to hand the ball off or continue with the play to read the pitch man. I’m wondering if Bobo has installed some sort of zone read for this game. The bad pitch to Mitchell in the TN game was a version of a zone read. It was poorly executed but the fact we did it makes me wonder if we have something for Clowney and Taylor.
You can run away from one great DE but you can’t run away from 2 great DEs. I hope we have schemed the game plan and realize we can’t line up in the power I and beat these guys. We need to spread the field and do some zone reads. That’s how Oregon has been so successful against better defenses. But I don’t think Bobo will yield to the fact that SCs front is better than his guys up front. I’m worried if we run the same old same old…Two short power formation runs then a long incompletion.

A good young DC, yes. The defense has been so awful that it is hard to imagine what things might be like if we got a stop every once in a while. I personally don’t think a top recruiter will change much at GT though because their is a ceiling that even the best recruiters in the world will not get passed. Maybe it would make a difference for a player here and there but it wouldn’t really elevate the program much.

I mean the volleyball players, and swimmers out there who are competing in sports pretty much just because they love to and they still bust their butts in challenging majors so that they can succeed in life later on. I distinguish this from football players who are coddled from the moment they are juniors in high school, then given the best tutors in the school and put into the easiest majors in hopes they will stay eligible. Most student athletes in the minor sports programs care about their education and their potential career after sports. I don’t feel like most football players care at all. Just my opinion.
