Q&A: Gamecocks’ Shaw encouraged by what Tennessee ‘among other teams’ able to do vs. Georgia

South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is completing 78.1 percent of his passes for 571 yards and 5 TDs this season. As Jeff Schultz so eloquently pointed out in his weekly predictions column, my scheduled interview with South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw on Wednesday was canceled by The Ol’ Ball Coach that day. We’re not sure if it was related to Schultz’s column advising Steve Spurrier he should learn to take criticism more like Georgia’s Mark Richt, but we have our suspicions. He’s been known to be a little thin-skinned here lately.

In any case, I wanted to profile Shaw for our readers because obviously he’s the starting quarterback for the Gamecocks, he’s from Flowery Branch, he’s the son of a longtime Georgia high school coach and, in case you haven’t noticed, he’s playing some pretty good ball.

A quick review on Shaw: He played at Flowery Branch High for his father, Lee Shaw (now at Rabun County). There he threw for 3,100 yards and 30 TDs with just six interceptions as a senior and established a reputation for finding a way to win games in dramatic fashion. Shaw was lightly recruited by UGA but signed with South Carolina and enrolled early in December of 2009.

With the Gamecocks, Shaw succeeded the troubled Stephen Garcia early last season and has been nearly unbeatable since. The Gamecocks are 12-1 with Shaw as the starter. At the moment he’s on quite the hot streak. In the last games, Shaw has completed 35-of-39 passes for 397 yards and four touchdowns.

While I wasn’t able to conduct my own interview, I was able to view a video of Shaw talking to South Carolina reporters Wednesday evening after the Gamecocks’ practice. He didn’t provide a lot of insight or any profound quotes, but I put together a little Q&A so you can at least hear from him this week. Here ya go . . .

Q: What are your thoughts about Saturday’s matchup with Georgia?

A: “Two Top 10 teams, a lot riding on this game, an SEC East Game, College GameDay and I’m from Georgia. Yeah, it’s pretty exciting.”

Q: What do you expect?

A: “I just know it’s going to be intense. It always is every year. We’ve just got to come out and play smart and take care of the ball.”

Q: Are you excited about what you saw Tennessee do to Georgia’s defense?

A: “Yeah, Tennessee among other teams. We’ve been watching all the tapes and we’ve got our plays ready for them that can hurt them. Of course, we’ve got to come out and execute.”

Q: What are your impressions of the Bulldogs’ defense?

A: “They just play hard. They’ve got Jarvis Jones who’s a great player and makes plays. Really their whole defense flies around. So we just have to play sound football.”

Q: What’s the plan for tailback  Marcus Lattimore?

A: “We’ve got to get him involved early and we know that. He steps up on big stages. We expect him to this game.”

Q: Were there some positives you guys could take from struggling early against Kentucky?

A: “I think it’s good that we were down going into halftime. We were able to come back in the second half and it was good to see our team bounce back.”

Q: How is your offensive line doing?

A: “I think they’re playing hard and we’ve definitely been playing hard out here. There’s plays where they execute really well and there’s some plays we have mistakes, but that’s going to happen every game.”

Q: What does it mean to know you’re able to just run Lattimore up inside on a lead play at any time and get positive yardage?

A: “It’s an advantage. It’s good to know we can just run 21 and get the job done. But we can’t just go out there and run power against Georgia and expect to beat them.”

Q: Do you think Lattimore is back to where he was last season before his knee injury?

A: “I don’t think he’s missed a beat. He’s strong. One thing big about him is he gets better as the game goes on, the second third and fourth quarter, everybody’s wearing down and he’s getting stronger it seems.”

Q: How do you handle the hyped atmosphere and everything that is surrounding Saturday’s game?

A: “You can’t let the game be bigger than it is. It’s another SEC game and that’s how we treat it. We know it’s a big game and I’m from Georgia. We’ve got a lot of guys from Georgia. But we can’t treat it like it’s more than it is.”

Should be a great game. I hope our defense play junkyard dawg ball and just whip their butts. A win against a low-class Spurrier coached team is always fun. And please Murray, don’t turn the ball over and give them the game like last time. that’s my biggest worry

You’re right Connor Shaw…you may have watched tape of all of our games. That would be expected. And you’ve designed your plays to hurt us. That too would be expected. But the big question is whether you can execute those plays. And the Dawgs will see to it that you don’t. Because we’ve seen all of your game tapes and we’ve designed our plays to beat you. What I do expect to see is a visor getting thrown down a lot in frustration! GO DAWGS!!!!

OK DAWGS, you’ve read it here…..Conner has seen what other teams have done to you and they know what they can do to you from it! Aaron Murray is better than Conner Shaw…..period!! Rambo, don’t let those deep passes get by you! You’ve had your rest for the season, now it’s payback time and take care of the secondary. Jarvis and Tree will head up the front line! GATA put Mr. Shaw on his backside!

Keep thinking about how Clowney walked thru last year when Cordy Glen simply opened the lane for him! He didn’t even’t touch him when he was lined up right across Ben Jones! Someone MUST stop Clowney! He’s a beast!

Remember it’s Your Team,Your Time, No Regrets!! GO DAWGS!!!

Reminds me of a story about a young group of Vietnam soldiers who came under fire. As confusion set in the captain ran down through the trenches….Shouting “Remember what you’ve been taught”. It seems that with yourth comes confusion in the midst of battle…SO GUYS…. REMEMBER WHAT YOUVE BEEN TAUGHT….DO YOUR JOB AND THE TEAM WILL BE FINE!!!

For all my Georgia friends we have a few guys on defense you might have to deal with before you worry so much about Shaw . I can promise you one thing , the Gamecocks will be ready . In response to the Gamecocks stink and can’t play we can just look back over the last few seasons and see who has the big W beside there name and after tomorrow it will be a three in a row . Go Cocks !!!

I like the way Kentucky rattled Shaw in the 1st half. Almost jumped out to a 24-7 lead, before SC got a stop on the 1 yardline.

Shaw hasn’t faced a top 50 defense yet, so his numbers are really skewed. He didn’t look too good in the 1st half vs. Kentucky, I expect UGA to study what Kentucky did to rattle Shaw and jump on the inexperienced kid early and get out to a large lead by the 4th quarter, taking Lattimore out of the equation.

I expect UGA to win by 21+, UGA 48, SC 27.

October 5th, 2012
10:50 pm

Shaw has a 0-2 td to int ratio in the 1st quarter, look for UGA to jump out to a lead on him. And Shaw has yet to throw a td in the 4th quarter, with a 0-0 td to int ratio, so if you put the game on his arm in the 4th, it’s a role Spurrier has yet to trust him with, due to his inexperience, and tendency to throw int’s under pressure.

October 5th, 2012
10:51 pm

The problem that Conner Shaw is not seeing is that SCAR does NOT have the offense of UT….no passing game

October 5th, 2012
10:52 pm

SC doesn’t have the receivers Tenn had, or the Qb.

October 5th, 2012
10:53 pm

SC’s o-line is suspect, UGA will roll on them, especially in passing situations, Shaw will be running for his life.

October 5th, 2012
10:57 pm

Shaw has only faced 1 ranked SEC team in his 13 starts, that was Ark, who beat him 44-28, Shaw’s numbers in that game?

0 td’s, 1 int, 90 passer rating.

He really hasn’t ever beaten a ranked SEC team, Murray took it to Auburn last year and ended up with 4 td’s, 0 int’s, and a 255 passer rating.

That’s the difference in these 2 Qb’s, not even close.

Dawg Heaven

October 5th, 2012
11:07 pm

If not for the turnovers vs. Tenn, our D would have given up another 20 something points last week. This is the best defensive Georgia will have faced so far this season, by fay. We will have to put up 30+ to win.

October 5th, 2012
11:11 pm

VCGA..first of all you didnbet hear anything. Maybe that is the problem. Try reading and maybe…just maybe you can figure it out…

October 5th, 2012
11:12 pm

South Carolina hasn’t faced a good offense yet, look at the rankings of the scoring offenses SC has played:

Vandy 104
UAB 97
ECarolina 110
Kentucky 104
mizzou 66

The defense has played a bunch of creampuffs.

October 5th, 2012
11:17 pm

Gonna be pretty funny tomorrow watching Shaw try to complete passes to his 5′ 9” receivers against the likes of Commings, Rambo, Williams, Smith. Receivers are really undersized, UGA will pick AT LEAST 2 passes for int’s.

October 5th, 2012
11:19 pm

We’ll see how Aaron Murray runs the offense with 250LBS of Clowney hanging on his back! This will be the third year in a row to down the dawgs. Get use to it!

October 5th, 2012
11:19 pm

I am looking at this game and feeling like I should be worried

when you break it down objectively, GEORGIA has an advantage in almost every category…..there is no reason they should lose – doesn’t mean they can’t lose – but Georgia has the demonstratively better Offense (Passing AND RUNNING – yes those two are better than 1 Lattimore)

Defense is a wash and I would argue that Georgia’s Defensive backfield is much better than SCAR’s

Funny things and turnovers can happen…but if the game is straight up, GEORGIA WINS by at least 14 points!

October 5th, 2012
11:20 pm

Shaw’s offense only scored 17 on Vandy, Murray scored 48.

October 5th, 2012
11:26 pm

I have a lot of respect for the Shaw family and Connor.( Lee Shaw was my high school coach)

But with that said……… GO DAWGS !!!!

October 5th, 2012
11:33 pm

Conner…If you are on your back, the only pass you can throw is straight up, I don’t think SCs offense can move the ball against UGA. But I’m worried about UGA against Clowney and Taylor. UGA by 3.
