Notebook: Through five games, ‘Gurshall’s stats top Herschel’s

ATHENS – The “Gurshall” phenomenon continues to grow.

That is the nickname Georgia receiver Tavarres King coined for the freshman tailback tandem of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, combining syllables from their last names to rhyme with the first name of Georgia’s greatest tailback — Herschel Walker.

“At first it was just a little thing, but now it’s getting big,” Gurley said. “I guess everybody knows about it. We just try to come out there and play our game and try to be like nobody else. But it’s a cool thing.”

Marshall acknowledged “Gurshall” has gotten a lot of attention, especially on social media, “but we try not to focus on that. We try to focus on every day at practice, getting better and not letting that stuff go to your head.”

Through five games, the “Gurshall” tandem has accounted for 964 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns — 536 yards and nine touchdowns by Gurley, 428 yards and five touchdowns by Marshall.

And if you’re wondering, Walker had 463 yards rushing and five touchdowns in his first five college games back in 1980. He finished that season with an NCAA freshman-record 1,616 yards rushing and finished his three-year UGA career with 5,259.

Gurley and Marshall will get by far their biggest test Saturday against a South Carolina defense that has allowed only 77.6 rushing yards per game and only two rushing touchdowns this season.

“Watching film on them, they are a great defense,” Marshall said. “So this should be a good matchup.”

Noting that South Carolina ranks No. 2 among SEC teams (behind only Alabama) in scoring defense, Gurley said: “Numbers don’t lie.”

Lattimore … again

Georgia’s defense gets a third attempt at slowing Marcus Lattimore on Saturday and hopes for a lot more success than in the first two.

South Carolina’s powerful tailback ran for 358 yards on 64 carries in two previous games against Georgia, 182 on 37 as a freshman and 176 on 27 last season. He returned this season after knee surgery (torn ACL) sidelined him the final six games of last season.

“We played him well last year up until the fourth quarter, and then he had a couple of big runs,” Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said. “We’ve got to understand that we’ve got to play four quarters on him. … I’ve got a lot of respect for him. … He plays that position the way you should play it.”

Lattimore is averaging 88 rushing yards per game and 4.8 yards per carry this season. He topped 20 carries in each of South Carolina’s first three SEC games and surpassed 100 rushing yards in two of them. He also has caught 16 passes, most on the team.

“I think we just have to gang tackle him,” Georgia cornerback Sanders Commings said. “Everybody has to play their assignments, and once one guy gets a hat on him, then two, three and four more just got to bring that guy down.”

Etc.

Georgia announced the kickoff time for its Nov. 17 home game against Georgia Southern: 1:30 p.m. TV arrangements “are still being finalized,” the school said. … Aaron Murray’s next touchdown pass will tie David Greene’s UGA career record of 72. … Michael Bennett’s season-ending knee injury hasn’t changed Georgia’s plan to redshirt freshman receiver Blake Tibbs. … Amarlo Herrera is expected to start at the “Mike” inside linebacker position Saturday. He shifted to that spot after Alec Ogletree’s return from suspension last week at the “Mo” position. “He’s earned the right to play,” Grantham said of Herrera. “We’ll stick with it and continue to work it.” Michael Gilliard and Christian Robinson also remain  in the playing-time mix at inside linebacker.

What is more impressive that Gurshall having better stats than Herschel is that Gurley’s stats are better through 5 games and Marshall’s stats are almost identical to Herschel’s stats. If they have nearly the career of Herschel, UGA is in good shape for years to come.

Oh boy. Here we go again. The next Herchel Walker has arrived for the 50th time. Nevermind that the teams they have played have all had horrible rush defenses and one tenth the talent overall that UGA has.

Hmm, if TK really combined the first syllables of their last names, it would be “Gurmar”. Not nearly as exciting. A misprint, perhaps?

These guys appear to be the real thing, no doubt about that and Georgia should be proud they have them(and they are) and we will all have the opportunity to see how they play out in their careers. That said, other than the UGA people, I for one would like to see how Herschel would play the game today. Lest we forget, when Pat Trammel played QB for Bama around the same time he weighed around 197 and he was the 2nd largest player Bama had at the time. In those days the linemen played around 200 lbs. Herschel played at around 235 Lbs. if I remember correctly. With today’s linemen being in the 6-5″ 330 Lbs.range I don’t think Herschel or any back would be consistently carrying the ball 40 times a game with Buck throwing 1 or 2 passes a game and UGA having much success. Whatever these two backs accomplish they should be able to do it without being compared to what someone did under far different circustances. There have been many, many great backs in the SEC over the years. Herschel was great, but only one of the greatest and in todays enviroment he would be rated above average. There was an article last year about the Dallas Cowboys in which someone made a comment about Herschel that pointed out that Herschel was head and shoulders above the backs he played with in College, but when he played with guys his size he was only average and I believe this proved to be true. Not to take anything away from Herschel, but give these guys credit for being what they are and enjoy watching them without immediately comparing them to a sweet memory. I don’t see anyone comparing Belue to Murray (ha ha)

@J.T.Keene good points the difference in size, speed and strength in the line men and line backers now days prohibits a TB running 30 times a game or they end up like Lattimore hurt half of the time and that is no knock on Lattimore. Gurshall is a cool concept because they give us a way to run the ball 30 times a game without overly taxing the back.

I think they are pretty evenly matched but South Carolina will win because they are playing better defense. Its hard to really say for sure though because neither team has been tested this year.

From what I’ve seen in the first 5 games this year, Lattimore is NOT the same back he was last year, not even close. He’s still favoring that knee. He used to run fearless and now he runs fearful, if you watch him with an open mind, you will see what I’m talking about. Just an average back right now. Maybe he improves as the season goes on, but he is nowhere close to what he was last year. It’s in his head… it was reported that his rehab was so painful that he almost quit football altogether. Most all backs that come back from ACL surgery, rarely ever get back to where they were before it happened. Not saying he’s not a good back, he is… just not the Lattimore of years past, which was dominance.

Dogs keep him under 80 yards this year and maybe a short yardage goal line plunge. Dawgs offense is too potent for SC and our D will play well enough to keep SC from matching scores. With Tree back in the middle, Shaw won’t be as successful as he has been with those designed QB runs and draws. Ga.’s main focus this week should be on protecting the football and not giving free points away. If SC is forced to beat us with their O, Dawgs will win convincingly.

UGA 41-24.

I’m nearly 70 and have been watching SEC football for over 60 years. South Carolina is still an ACC team and in their hearts they know it and those of us who have watched the SEC knows it. They’ll play hard and will do all they can to make the TV audience think that Columbia is a football hot house…it’s not. Look at their all-time records and you will see it for what it is: an illusion, smoke and mirrors, a “B” team. I’m an LSU fan but I can tell you that Georgia is going to strap it on and knock some folks around this Saturday night. Georgia OWNS the Gamecocks and always will.

@ J.T.Keene – I think you should compare Herschel’s numbers pre and post injury. Then you might see a discrepancy between “an article” in which “someone” gave their opinion and reality.

@ GTBob Regardless of how you feel about our team Bob, I think you should admit we have a lot of talent. Of course most teams don’t have that much talent. Obviously when you mix that with a few other variables you get a high preseason ranking. What are we supposed to do, schedule the toughest schedule possible out of conference and still play in the SEC so we can watch and Oregon or some other team with an easy schedule and no injuries waltz into the Championship game while the SEC teams beat the crap out of each other? … That’s a rhetorical Q btw Bob; don’t waste the space a real Georgia fan might want to use.
