ATHENS – Remember when Georgia used to play every home game at 1 o’clock in the afternoon? Well, the Bulldogs are going to give you a chance to reminisce on Nov. 17 as the Georgia Southern game has been set for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
Television broadcast rights are still being negotiated as the game falls into the one game pay-per-view or point-to-point telecast provisions as outlined by the SEC. There are strong indications that Atlanta’s WSB-TV Channel 2 could end up carrying the game. The local ABC affiliate, a Cox Media Group station, televised Georgia’s game against Idaho State in November of the 2010 season.
Nevertheless, the kickoff time in such cases is left to the discretion of the schools and Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity liked the idea of an early afternoon start for a November game.
“We felt the 1:30 p.m. kickoff would give the fans the best timetable for tailgating opportunities before the game and will provide ample time to return home following the game,” McGarity said.
If the Georgia Southern game does in fact get picked up for TV, there is a chance every Georgia game could be televised this season. The Bulldogs are still awaiting word on broadcast plans for their game at Kentucky next week. The Oct. 27 Florida game is already set for a CBS telecast. The remainder of Georgia’s game are listed as “TBD” (to be determined).

I seem to remember, long before the days of TV games every week, back in the 70’s, that UGAs normal start time WAS at 1:30pm. Then, at some point when TV started to get more involved, we went to a standard 1pm.
Does anyone else remember the old standard 1:30pm kickoffs??

Go Eagles, I think you have been smoking a little bit too much this morning. This game will be a blowout. I see it close at the half at 28-14 with UGA pulling away in the second half with a final of 52-14 and on our way to destroying Ga Tech the next week.

Tony, the standard kickoff time was not 1:30pm; it was always 1:00pm. In the ’80s it changed for TV.

There is some truth to that. Sorry about not having a competitive team this year. I thought we would be you guys toughest game but it turns out we are just as bad as Missouri, and Tennessee.

McGarity, define “best timetable” and “ample”. To have tailgating and to pack everything up before being in the stadium for kick off, you have to get there at the crack azz of dawn and have everything packed back in by 12:30. I would think a GA man would know better. And stop playing those competing teams update on the Jumbotron. Why are we giving free advertising to our competitors?

@ Go Eagles – you are an idiot.
I graduated from Ga. Southern and personally witnessed several National Championships. I would love for our Eagles to win, but we have already been beaten by Citadel and squeaked by others. We will hang in there for a quarter maybe the first half and then UGA will put the game away. For some reason, we have not built on last years success – yet.

DirtyDawg……..I have had a different experience w/ Comcast. They have been great and I would not change for anything. Love the SEC Package and the new Goal Line station for all the top plays. It is similar to the Red Zone for the NFL. Sorry your experience has not been as succesful.

In my 4 years at UGA (67-71), every home game began at 1:00 sharp. Very few TV broadcasts. Heck, we didn’t even get lights in the stadium until Clemson came to play Herschel and friends in ‘81 or so. It was (an still is) so much fun. It was just a lot simpler then. I do have to admit though that I do miss the Homecoming senior stroll across the field, but not wearing the 3-piece suite to the game on 90 degree afternoons. Go Dawgs.

Actually, it was 1:30 up until the mid-80’s. Once TBS starting doing SEC games in 1984, their kick-off time was 12:30. After a couple of years, Georgia moved its normal kick-off time to 1pm so any change for TV would not be as dramatic.

I have some friends that play for GSU, namely the starting Qb, Jerick McKinnon. They are a very good team and isnt a cupcake team like florida atlantic. I see it being close near half, maybe 35-17. Then uga’.s deph and talent will take over, final score 48-20

Stroke of genius by McGarity scheduing GSU the week before the Tech game (maybe not so much on the early start for the tailgaters). That game gives the Dawgs an extra week of practice against the ‘Bone with a ‘better than live scrimmage’.
Most Georgians probably pull for GSU in their league but this game never really has worked out well for them, except for the money.

Not exactly a stroke of genius for McGarity. This game was scheduled pre-Jeff Monken and the return of the option to Georgia Southern. Works out very well for the puppies, but it is coincidental.

Atlanta NAtive- nice….call one of your fellow Georgia Southern supporters an idiot. I believe he was just having a little blog fun. If you really followed your Eagles, you would know that the team is probably the most athletically talented it has been in a number of years, but has yet to gel on offense with a new quarterback(s) and a totally revamped offensive line. All four components of the kicking game are starters for the first year also- long snapper, holder, place kicker, and punter. So is the program building on the great strides it has made in the last two years under Jeff Monken? Absolutely! But not every team comes togetherr like instant gratification. Give them some time. Great things are happening in Statesboro.

Wrong about the lights. There were lights on telephone poles right behind the hedges in the 50’s and early 60’s and they were taken down mid 60’s. When they expanded the stadium mid 60’s new lights went on top of the stands. Then when #34 came ABC paid to have the present lights installed for the opener with the orange popcycle’s.

Never too early in the day to kick a little Eagle tail. Mouthiest fans this side of Columbia, SC. They honestly think they could go FBS, join the SEC and start competing for national titles. UGA fans who still root for these guys because of Erk should spend a few hours in Statesboro with a red hat on and see how it goes. I wish UGA would quit playing them and leave them for Tech.

I agree with everything you posted. We do have a young team and am extremely pleased with the direction of the Eagles (thus my closing comment” – yet”). If GT fires PJ maybe he’ll go back to Ga. Southern as the AD (like he wanted to before going to GT) and replace Sam Baker.
My previous comments to Go Eagles were meant for the “off the cuff” followers (sort of like Ga. State “fans”) spouting off without facing reality. We have never beaten a IA team let alone a top ten SEC stalwart. Again, I would love for the Eagles to win, but just don’t see it happening.
By the way, after watching games at Statesboro HS and being at the first game in Paulson Stadium, I have “really followed” the Eagles for 20+ years.

As to GA Southern in the early 90’s the GA law makers “SUGGESTED STRONGLY” that UGA and GA Southern play at least once every 4 years. Money game for The Eagles also helped with votes in South GA.

It was a Georgia Southern blessing that Erk came down to the “boro and started what he did. Look at this place now! I’m just glad Georgia gives us a game – I respect them for that. Tech has not and will not give Southern a shot. After seeing what Middle Tennessee did to them (a team Southern used to whip with regularity) I can see why. Still, the Tech / GSU match up would be great to watch. From an option standpoint, that would be a great match-up. All three schools should play each other. Great for the state. Great for the players. Great for the fans.

Like all teams from South Georgia no matter what level, Georgia Southern “lives and dies by the run.” It seems that Georgia Tech, with ex-Georgia Southern coach Paul Johnson at the helm, has brought this old concept to Atlanta. Ergo, Ga.Southern could conceivably be seen as a “tune-up game” before UGA’s regular season finale against Ga. Tech.
