‘Back Porch Chat:’ Replacing Michael Bennett, protecting Aaron Murray and stopping Marcus Lattimore

Time for another “Back Porch Chat” with the good folks from CineSport. Thursday I talked with Tara Petrolino about Saturday’s monumental matchup between No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. She wanted to know how the Bulldogs are going to deal with the season-ending injury to leading receiver Michael Bennett, if Georgia will be able to protect quarterback Aaron Murray and what the Dogs must do to slow down Marcus Lattimore. . . .

Murray’s height is a problem. At least 3 tipped passes at the line, one resulting in an interception.
I hope I’m wrong.

Lattimore will run wild unless Georgia learns to tackle instead of blocking runners down.

Murray’s height is his ONLY problem right now.

Murray’s height could be a problem in this game with USCe’s DE’s, who are 6′08″ and 6′07″. Dawgs will need to run the ball.

Murray’s tendency to lock onto and stare down a single receiver is much more disconcerting to me than his lack of height is. 80% of the time, he has decided who he’s goi.g to throw the ball to before he breaks the huddle. Cut it out, Murray! Damn!

Like they say, all the talking stops when the tailgate drops. We will see how overrated (tongue in cheek) Jarvis is when the line up Sat. I think he has a tremendous game. Hopefully the chemistry on D will be better. At any rate I do not think that GA will see a more potent passing game than TN’s. I think they will be focused and ready, Go Dawgs. Murray’s been pretty good this season. The one pick vs UT wasn’t his fault. The UT DE made a good play and tipped the ball so hid guy could get it. The fumble on the sack concerns me, I believe the tackling and focus will be better on the defensive side of the ball this week. The only reason that UT game was close is because we made it close. 21 pts gift wrapped. No one has stopped our offense all year and it won’t be stopped this Saturday. Not even Spurrier can score enough to keep up with us. No matter how much USC scores UGA will be one better. 6-0 is coming and USC will be at home again watching the DAWGS in the SEC CG!

Key to the game is the 4qtr. Lattimore didn’t do “squat” for 3 qtrs last year, but wore us out in the 4th. Hopefully our incredible depth this year on defense will be huge coming down the stretch. Go Dawgs!

I’m worried about the effect that the return of Rambo and Ogletree has had on our defense. Obviously, they are superior athletes to the others who played those positions in their absence, but their return meant the shuffling of other positions in the UT game. I think their return is good, but there was a trickle-down effect last week that led to the unit as a whole looking somewhat confused.

Man, I really hope we win. I’m awfully nervous, and I’m usually an optimist.

@Tuck,
Loosen-up dude…….Murray is one of the best in the nation. Our line just needs to give him a few seconds and he will be cool. Hope we have a good counter to the big defensive rush.

Lenny,
I think we are cool. It is difficult, make that impossible to be up every week in the SEC. I expect a defensive game similar to the Vandy. Our defense will be incredible….count on it!!!

Spurrier would rather beat us than win a NC (after how we treated him during his Heisman year at UF); however, we have too much going for us this year The law of averages is on Murray’s side for beating a top 20 team. Dawgs win 34-28….bring on the Gators. Marlon Brown will be the star.

Tuck, you are crazy wrong! Murray is having an awesome year. He is checking down and having mulitple players catching passes. Jeez, Bennett dropped 5 passes alone in the Mizou game. He would have a much higher passing rating if our receivers would just catch the damn ball.

You have to believe that Rambo and Ogletree have been practicing a good bit while waiting for their four game suspensions to end. However, the players who were taking their place got the majority of the snaps so they could be ready for game day. Ogletree already had a spectacular day last week against Tn, but I believe Rambo is going to be in the thick of things much more this week. Making some spectacular hits and causing at least one fumble, and busting up a pass that will result in an interception for our Big D! 2.5 point spread? I think Ga wins by 16 with one missed field goal!! Put it to them DAWGS!

Michael Bennett was one of the most underatted recievers by outsiders looking into our program, but I felt as if Murray often relied on him to many times. Sometimes AM never took his eyes off of him in the short passing game, which is dangerous. AM does a good job in spreading the receptions around and I believe this will force him to do it even more. Good luck to Bennett in recovery but this may actually cut down or AM’s interceptions. I just hope we can run it up the middle on SC. The DE’s will have the outside lanes blocked up even during a pass rush. Maybe hard with our smaller center, but that guy has some heart.

I am not worried about our skill on defence, it is the play calling I am worried about. Grantham in a heck of a coach in teaching skills and maneuvers, but his play calling gets to me. We played off the recievers by 10 yds for 80% of the time against UT. It was like we couldn’t figure it out, then we got gashed on rushing.

I expect the opposite during the SC game. I see alot of Zone-Read play action passing in the first quarter then Lattimore hitting it hard in the second half. Hunker Down Dawgs!!! It is going to be a good one.

Screen passes will be very important. Would love to see us utilize a couple of these on the first 2-3 series to slow the DE’s down a little. I like this especially when we are on our side of the 40. Nice safe play, usually goes for -1 to +10 yards. If it doesn’t work, you can always punt, but it will help us avoid turning the ball over deep in our own end. Would love to see both traditional RB screen with Marshall and WR bubble screens used.

Hate to say it, but would also like to see a few sprint draws on 2nd and 8 or 2nd and 10 to slow down the pass rush as well. We have done a GREAT job this year (unlike recent seasons) of making this a SURPRISE play to try to catch the d a little off balance rather than making it the centerpiece of our offense that the other team gameplans to stop. I think it has been more effective this year because of that

One or two of those in the first quarter might be a good idea as well

Interesting that you don’t hear a lot of bashers clamoring for Mason to de-redshirt and take his “rightful” place as the Georgia starting QB since EVERYONE can see that Mason is the far superior QB to Murray and that Richt and staff are only playing favorites in choosing him to be the starting QB.

Seems like last season and all pre-season if Mason went 3-4 in a practice or a scrimmage, there would be multiple posters that were incensed that Murray was the starter since he can’t tie his own shoes and Mason is the 2nd coming of Dan Marino.

Maybe they will be back if Georgia loses. Hope we don’t find out.

I believe the chickens will blitz a lot which can open up the bun game if the OL will open up a lane or two. The chickens haven’t faced an balanced team like UGA, so their defense is going to be guessing a lot themselves. I really don’t expect Lattimore to run up 175 yared on the DAWGS nor do I expect Gurshall to get their usual yardage. I believe the difference in this game will be Murray with accurate passes. He is better than Connor Shaw and I believe UGA’s secondary is better also. GO DAWGS, GATA!!

Yes I agree with Chip. Will the rush of SC DL cause Murrey to fumble and throw picks? Will the SC LB’s get to the freshman RB’s and cause fumbles.

Hey Chip, will SC run out of the spread zone read or the I? They ran the spread with Garcia and Shaw, but they switch to the I last week in the 2 CD half of the Kentucky game.

UGA will score some points, but not as many as usual…UGA is playing a team with a legit defense, and it will slow down the offense a bit.

On the other side, UGA’s defense through 5 games has been very unimpressive. Shaw is completing a high percentage of his passes, and UGA hasn’t been getting pressure on the QB…that dosn’t bode well. Also, I think Lattimore will get his yards.

With SC playing at home, I think they get the win by 7.
