Georgia wide receiver Michael Bennett injured, out for season (Updated)

ATHENS — Georgia’s football team suffered a significant and untimely injury, learning Wednesday that its leading receiver, Michael Bennett, will miss the remainder of the season with a torn knee ligament.

Bennett, injured on the final play of Tuesday’s closed practice, was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will require reconstructive surgery, UGA said.

The news came as No. 5 Georgia prepares for Saturday’s game at No. 6 South Carolina, a showdown of undefeated SEC East teams.

Georgia’s offense surely will miss Bennett against the Gamecocks’ stellar defense. Through five games, he leads the Bulldogs’ receivers in catches (24), yards (345) and touchdowns (4).

Bennett reacted to his season-ending injury via Twitter, writing: “God has a plan for me and everything happens for a reason. Get ready for a historic season Dawg nation. Our boys are gonna get it done!”

Coach Mark Richt said the injury occurred as Bennett was blocking in the final drill of practice.

“It’s very sad that it happened,” Richt said. “It was a heck of a practice, really. Everybody was working hard; everybody had a good attitude; scout teamers were getting after it. Everything you’d hope for in a Tuesday practice, we were having.

“And then, on the very last [play] of the day, he was engaged in a block and was just working it. And as he was moving — no one ran into him [or] rolled into him or anything like that — his knee buckled. And there it was.”

Bennett, an Alpharetta High graduate, was redshirted as a UGA freshman in 2010 and showed considerable promise in 2011 before emerging as a top target for quarterback Aaron Murray this season.

Bennett had eight catches against Missouri, 110 receiving yards against Florida Atlantic and, in what proved to be his final game of the season, five catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns against Tennessee last week. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining, and Richt  expects that he’ll be ready to play at the start of next season.

Wide receiver is one of Georgia’s deepest positions. After Bennett, the team’s next most productive receivers have been seniors Marlon Brown (17 catches for 272 yards and three touchdowns) and Tavarres King (16 catches for 307 yards and three touchdowns).  Rantavious Woote, Chris Conley and Rhett McGowan also have contributed. Even before Bennett’s injury, the coaches returned Malcolm Mitchell — the Bulldogs’ second leading receiver behind King last year — to primarily an offensive role after using him on defense through the season’s first four weeks.

“Now, especially with Bennett’s injury, we’re going to be using [Mitchell] more offensively,” Richt said. “But that was the plan [already].”

Richt likes Georgia’s depth at wide receiver but says the group will miss Bennett in more ways than one.

“I think we’re still going to be fine, but we’re losing a guy that I personally think helped the toughness of our unit [in] the way he went about his business, even when he was redshirted,” Richt said. “Just a tough, hard-nosed football player, a guy who was going to make a tough catch, a guy who was going to block, a guy who was going to practice with a lot of intensity.”

King wants to pay tribute to Bennett during Saturday’s game.   “I wanna wear 82 this week,” King tweeted, referring to Bennett’s jersey number.

Terrible blow!

Bennett never seemed satisfied with just making a catch. He was always looking to score after the catch. Evident from a quick post route he ran on Saturday that he took for another 20 yds after the catch for a TD.

Have faith that the wr corps will continue on and fill the gap.

Conley looks to be next up! Not a bad plan B.

I really feel for the kid. Talking about a kid who does everything the right way. Worked his tail off to get an offer to UGA, has been working his tail off since he stepped on campus to the tune of working into the WR rotation fairly quickly. Was having a great season. I am sure he will continue the trend and work his tail off to get that knee ready to go at full strength for next season. My heart goes out to him, indeed.

Not good news for the kid or for AMurray who seemed to search out Bennett when in trouble or under pressure.

I’m not a Dawg fan, but from what I’ve seen of them this season (all their games so far), WR is the one position where they can probably absorb a loss like this, even one as talented as Bennett. With a lesser QB running things, I’d be more concerned, but Murray will have plenty of other options and my guess is the offense doesn’t miss a beat.

I’m wishing this young man a speedy recovery. GOD has the FINAL say on your career. However, I would strongly advise that you talk to teammates, former players, as well as NFL players that has suffered the same type of injury or another type of injury and see how they coped with it. I can tell you that MENTALLY is going to be the toughest part if no one has told you yet. A player on your team RIGHT NOW suffered an injury and worked his way back to being healthy and the COACHES has pretty much written HIM OFF by not giving him the OPPORTUNITY to take as many reps in practice and get back to his normal position. You might not be FORGOTTEN!!!! GOOD LUCK THOUGH!!!

While I am reasonably sure that Richt and Bobo do not read these blogs, I will state this fact anyway, Wooten is NOT a replacement for MB! I can not believe they threw that critical pass to Wooten instead having Mitchell on that play against the Vols. It is a sad case when the players themselves have to overcome stupid coaching decisions in EVERY game.

What a tough break for a great kid – and a fine player! We will miss him. But, if there is anything positive in losing Bennett, it is that we do have depth at the wide receiver position and our tight ends are starting to show up more and more. Everyone will have to take up the slack to beat S.C.. Perhaps none more vital than our offensive line against a high quality defensive line and outstanding pass rushers. I believe this game vs S.C. is as big as any that Georgia has played in a long time, for so many, many reasons. Not the least of which is simply to find out if we really are the fifth best team in the country, or have we been pretending?? Go Dawgs!

The article didn’t say how the injury occurred and I know injuries happen. What I don’t understand is why at the collegiate level they are still having full pads, full scrimmages after the season has started.
We did that in high school. You will not hear about the pros having full contact, full scrimmages once the season has started. Oh, I forgot, the pros see the players as money making assets and they want to minimize the risks.

Sheesh people come down off the ledge. Bennett is a big loss no doubt, but now is the time when UGA has a chance to prove we’re truly worthy of being ranked with the big boys.
Average teams fold when they lose a playmaker
Good teams figure out a way to survive the loss of the playmaker
Great teams step up and say ______________! you’re up next and keep on trucking.

It’s never a good thing to lose a player of Bennett’s caliber, but if there is a silver lining, you know SC’s D-coordinator had to be game planning for MB. Also, maybe A.Murray got a little too comfortable leaning on him as well. We have SO much talent at the WR spot, I don’t think we’ll miss a beat.

Look for T.King to have his big breakout game of the season, look for A. Lynch and J. Rome to get more looks, and look for Mitchell, Conley, Wooten, and Brown to all play inspired ball and win one for the kid.

Our Junkyard D will be back, Tenn was a blip on the radar screen, and our D’s timing was off from a rusty Rambo and Tree.

I won’t pretend losing MB doesn’t hurt. The guy is the definition of a DGD. He is a tremendous blocker, unselfish, nice hands and almost a certainity to make the catch especially when Georgia had to have it. However, this is a position Georgia is deep at and blessed with talent. Yes indeed one of the as yet “quiet” guys who has not seen the field much will have to step up. He won’t have to fill MB’s shoes as both a blocker and receiver but he will need to in one of those categories and be solid in the other. I see after a week of riding the bandwagon and only throwing a few jabs at Georgia you are back to your true self. No one here thinks you are a Georgia fan. You are a coward who hides behind the fan label so you can try and irritate your betters.

You told everyone exactly who you are when you started a post with “I hate to say this but,” and then proceeded to gleefully say how Georgia would now lose to the cocks and the Dawgs entire offensive plan was doomed.

I have called you out since you slithered onto these blogs. You always reply with that patented troll comment about being a fan but not drinking the kool aid. Anyone that says that REALLY means “I am a doosh that is afraid to declare a team because my self worth is so tiny much like my organs.” Every week you have predicted tragedy and a probable Georgia loss. Strangely after Georgia’s inevitable win this season you don’t show up to celebrate the win as most every single other regular poster does.

WOW!!! A ‘true fan” who is always negative, who made a list of a dozen teams that are better than Georgia, and who never posts after a win. I stand corrected with all those qualifications you have to be a fan and not a gutless little loser with no life, no friends, no job and only his ajc posts to mark he ever lived at all.

If that kind of weak azz crap happens we aren’t the #5 team in the nation and never had a snowball’s chance in hell at winning a championship with or without MB. That’s all I’ve got to say. Better to find out now than to get our hopes up and find out later I suppose. Thanks for your input.

Please spare me all the mindless psychobabble about how this is going to affect the team. Here’s a newsflash for some of you people: We aren’t the only team that has to deal with injuries. I saw the other day where Bama lost one of their starting wide recievers to a knee injury too. I doubt anyone over there is crying in their milk about it. I bet Saban hasn’t lost a wink of damn sleep over a “dominoe effect” with the passing game and I seriously doubt Richt and Bobo have either. Give me a freaking break. Injuries happen. Just line up and play the damn game.

I’m tired of all the excuses. This is a big game and we better freaking win it.

Thanks.

As a matter of fact, I read last year that other members of the team called him “White Lightning”. Just a quality kid, always tweeting positive messages. In a game like this, turnovers are what everyone should worry about.

Its simple, but you can’t give the other team the ball and if you have the opportunity to jump on a fumble or snag that interception, you better do it.

Also, to a lesser extent, penalties. Been very pleased at the low number of penalties by Carolina this year.

We have a bruiser for a TE. Looks like a 70s pro TE in build. I don’t think he will be much of a threat to outrun your corners! The number two has pretty good speed and great hands. I notice that you are ranked near the top in run D, but the teams you have played haven’t run very well. They are ranked 105, 104, 122, 58, and 87 for run offense, so I am sure Bobo will be running some to see how you do. This is much like the Ds we have run against; they aren’t ranked very high, with the exception of Missouri. Should be interesting to see what both staffs cook up.

“one minute this will not disrupt Murray’s passing game. There is a rhythm between the 2 that will be lost ”

Just a bunch of know-nothings who don’t understand the timing and trust which goes into college passing games against solid defenses.

It couldn’t have come at a worst time for the SC game, though over the season an adjustment can be made to another receiver but it is silly to pretend that AMurray didn’t look for Bennett in crucial situations and to believe that you can just stick another player with different speed, different build and who comes out of cuts differently into such a crucial position for a game with 2 practice days later.

He was the TOP UGA receiver for a reason and with the 8 NFL Pro-bowlers at the other WR positions, he must have had something going for him to have double the catches of any of those other pro bowlers..geez.

I’m sorry to see a DGD go down to an injury, but especially this young man. I hope the other players not only try to fill his shoes, but emulate his play on the field. Watching him play, I often got the feeling that he was doing exactly what should be done, giving us the prototype for that football move.

Wishing him a speedy and full recovery.

Go, Georgia.

Michael Bennett is a strong spiritual youngster and will bounce back. I am glad that he has a tremendous support group with his family and within the University. (team and friends) as well as fans. The Dawgs will have someone to step up because they have talent ability and a love for each other. Coach Richt ad the coaching staff value relationships that are genuine and authentic.

Really hate to hear that for Bennett. On a positive note, the fact that he was on the field in a practice and was going at it that hard tells me that the whole team is practicing hard this week instead of taking it lightly. I hope this injury doesn’t cause Richt to back off on the practices. Practices should be as hard as the games, we all saw a few years ago what happened when he backed off the intensity of the practices.

Our freshmen offensive players need to play better than they did this past Saturday. Theus’ missed assignment led to A. Murray’s fumble and T. Gurley missed his block which led to K. Marshall fumbling.
I found out about Michael Bennett around noon and I’m still depressed. He is the one receiver that I never worried about. I just knew he would catch everything that came near him, good pass or not. I felt he was our best player on the team and a DGD. Bennett would have caught that catch (that Wooten missed) over the middle last Saturday to seal the game. He was money.

I agree with most of that, but let’s not forget that Mitchell was number one last year. He was 2 behind co-number ones Brown and Bennett after moving to D. So, we will definitely miss MB, but Murray is very familiar with both Brown and Mitchell. I think the biggest hole is Murray’s confidence in MB to pull down the tough catches in tight surroundings.

Without using academics tell us why you think this is true..I think the the problem is that CPJ is too arrogant, too lazy and just does not have the people skills to be an effective recruiter..Tech fans are blasting Al Groh but the truth is he’s working with the marginal talent CPJ has recruited.

I have had the opportunity to watch a couple of Georgia’s games on TV, and I think Bennett has been on of the major keys to Georgia’s offense….very clutch receiver. He is going to be very hard to replace. Big third down and red zone receiver. Hard to cover in those situations. Who has those kinds of skills that will be able to replace him?

@Rick James….

I am not sure anyone at WR has been more of a consistent threat anywhere on the field than Bennett…….and espcially in the red zone. I don’t think Marshall can consistently do the things that Bennett does……and Bennett presents a big receiver match up problem for opposing defenses. Marshall doesn’t. Marshall presents more of down town receiver threat for sure….but I would prefer a receiver that presents the overall skill sets at WR that Bennett does. I would think that Marlon Brown would be more of the the type of receiver to step in and perform the role of Bennett did for the Dawgs. But I am not sure any of the Dawg receivers left can come close to fulfilling the shoes vacated by Bennett on Saturdays. He was a damn good receiver. I know as a Gator fan, I worred more about Bennett that any other Georgia receiver. With him not being on the field, I think Georgia becomes easiler overall to defend for Florida and other SEC teams.

I extend my condolences to this fine young man. He will be greatly missed. However, we are deep at receiver this year at UGA. Hopefully, God’s plan for him will be to provide extra motivation for the rest of the team to give it their all in supporting their super fellow Dawg! I believe we are going to see a motivated UGA team hit the field in Columbia come Saturday night. Spurrier has provided plenty of sparks to light a huge fire under the Dawgs. Let’s hope this is going to be their year in taking the first major stride in “completing the drill” for an SEC and National Championship this year!

October 4th, 2012

I don’t want to read thru all of the posts, but only 1 person mentioned Jay Rome on the first page of comments. That guy is a beast and can line up in the slot like Orson Charles and create mismatches. I still think that Mitchell should focus on DEFENSE. Brandon Smith is getting eaten alive on his side. Let him play corner in the nickel sets and maybe return kicks (he was OK at it last year). With Mitchell and Cummings playing on the outside, CTG can fill the box and force the evil genuis to try and throw the ball. That being said, the key to the game will be hitting Shaw a few times early and see if that effects his play

Depth is key

October 4th, 2012
9:08 am

Tampa Gator has it right about Marlon Brown. Great size and hands and when healthy, has proven himself. Look for him and Rome to run crosses across the middle while King and Concley stretch it deep. A screen or 2 to the best RB combo in the nation wouldn’t hurt either

I’ve loved what I’ve seen out of Conley since he got on campus, but don’t be surprised if a guy like Justin Scott-Wesley gets some reps. He isn’t the complete Hines Ward-type receiver that Bennett is, but he is as good of a downfield threat as this offense has.

I believe that Mr Bennett’s presence on the sideline will push us over the top…Rather have him onte field but his just being there will be a plus. SC will be tough and SS will, undoubtedly, have an ‘ace up his hole’…so to speak. But this Georgia team ain’t gonna flinch. Gotta keep those DEs off Murray though.
