Sanders Commings, Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall honored by SEC for performances vs. Vols

ATHENS — Three different Georgia players earned with player of the week honors from the SEC because of their performances against Tennessee this past weekend.

Tailbacks Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall actually shared the SEC Freshman of the Week award with Texas A&M quarterback Johnny “Football” Manziel. According to the SEC’s Charles Bloom, it’s the first time the league has bestowed an award on three individuals.

Meanwhile, senior cornerback Sanders Commings was named Defensive Player of the Week. He, too, shared his award. Ole Miss linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche of Grayson also was honored for his defensive play.

This is the third freshman honor for Gurley and first for Marshall. The roommates combined for 294 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns in Georgia’s 51-44 win over Tennessee ton Saturday.

Gurley, a Tarboro, N.C., native,  ran 24 times for 130 yards, which tied his career high, and scored three touchdowns, including a 51-yard scoring run, against Tennessee. It was Gurley’s fourth game over 100 yards in his five collegiate contests. He is leading the SEC in four categories, including rushing  (107.2 ypg) and scoring (60 points).

Marshall exploded for a career-high 164 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries (16.4 avg.) against the Volunteers. It Marshall’s second 100-yard game of his career is the biggest rushing output for Georgia since Washaun Ealey racked up 183 yards versus Georgia Tech in 2009.  Marshall’s scoring runs were 75 and 72 yards.

It was the first SEC weekly award of Commings’ career. The 6-foot-2, 217-pound senior from Augusta tallied five tackles — including four solos — and had a pair of interceptions in the final six minutes of the game to help thwart Tennessee’s comeback attempt. His first pick came with the Bulldogs up a touchdown with six minutes left with the ball near midfield. Commings then intercepted quarterback Tyler Bray again with seven seconds left to clinch the victory for Georgia. It marked the first time a Georgia  had two picks in a game since Bacarri Rambo recorded a pair against Ole Miss last season. Commings helped anchor a defense that held Tennessee to just 14 points in the second half after the Volunteers scored 30 in the first two quarters.

No. 5 Georgia (5-0, 3-0 SEC) travels to Columbia, S.C., on Saturday to take on No. 6 South Carolina (5-0, 3-0). The 7 p.m. game will be televised by ESPN.

Dawgs need to focus on shortcomings this week, not patting themselves on the back. Grantham will either earn his keep this week, or fall out of favor with the Bulldog Nation. There is no way SC should beat the Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday, Spurrier or no Spurrier. Surely to goodness Murray got his turnovers out of the way versus TN. Marshall is a true frosh, I give him a little break on his fumble as long as he learned from it. Murray gets NO pass on his. Richt gets NO pass if he drops three in a row to the Gamecocks. NO excuse for it.

Well-deserved honors! Now, let’s hope Marshall and Gurley get freshmen of the week next week too. I would be really happy with Murray as offensive player of the week, and Jones (or Commings, Rambo, Tree, etc.) winning defensive player again too :)

Saturday’s mental lapses are going to get us killed against USC. Stop Lattimore and make Shaw beat us. Tree had a great game statistically but look lost at times because he hasn’t played. Maybe that is just me. Mitchell is trying to do to much too. I wouldn’t let him return anymore punts. Everyone is back. Find a home for him and keep him there.

Congrats to all the players getting the rewards. It was a tough game. It is going to be tougher game this week. SC is only giving up 12 points a game. This is not Tennesse. Uga scored 21 in the 1st quarter and 21 in the 3rd. Everytime the dawgs took a good lead, something bad happened. AM and Marshall had fumbles. The pick six was a tipped ball. The poor ball fielding on Special Teams almost cost us the game. The Defense had to defend too many short fields. Help the defense by not making dumb mistakes, especially against a high powered offense like the Vols has. SC is an important game. Their D is stout. They have some offensive weapons. There is no time to rest. Goo dawgs

Actually Manziel won that as well. He set an SEC and Texas A&M record with 557 total offensive yards in the Aggies’ 58-10 win against Arkansas and accounted for a school record 453 passing yards on 29-of-38 passing with three TDs and no interceptions. He also rushed for 104 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Hard to top that.

Yanno, Columbus Dawg, I think maybe you should send in a game plan for CTG this week….sounds like you have the solution well in hand. And here I thought they were gonna have a donuts and cider party instead of practice today. Good to have you around for a point man.

And wow, you are generous giving Murray and Marshall a pass on their gaffes…keep up the good work, man! And while you, too, are getting up for working out at 5:30am, taking your classes, going to practice, doing your homework, and studying for next week’s game, give our hard working guys a high five for hanging in against TN while they turn around to get ready for battle again this week.

I certainly don’t expect a loss on Saturday. Richt and the staff have some tape or the teaching moments from last Saturday and the players have expressed that they see the issues. I expect much better play this coming weeked. I also expect both offenses to have mistakes caused by pressure. That is why the SEC is considered so strong, the defenses.

The weak link for the Dawgs is currently the two kick receiving teams. Both issues can be fixed. It’s mental errors, not physical. Tree and Rambo should be more in flow and I expect the defense to step up. On offense, I would give Murray some slack on the tip, pick six, but he should be running the stairs for that fumble. He knows it too.

Let’s hope Bobo realizes that SC will put a DE on Theus straight up and a LB or Safety behind to chris cross a blitz on every snap. We might better play a FB/RB combo a lot and give the boy some help. Tenn wore Theus out.

I agree time for Grantham to prove his defense can play for four quarters. We seem to be shutting down opponents offense at half. Grantham needs to make changes in the first and second quarter.
Bobo needs to stop trying to run out the clock in the 4TH quarter.and play it just like he does the other 3 quarters. The clock will take care of itself. Tennessee had 85 offensive plays and Georgia had 64. When the defense has to play 21 more plays than the offense they will be very tired by the end of the game. Spurrier thinks that the defense should have no more than around 60 plays. If our offense is so explosive that we are just not going to be able to balance the number of plays then our Offense has got to play the 4TH quarter just like they do the other three.GEORGIA HAS GOT THE STOP SO MANY 3 AND OUT’S IN THE FOURTH QUARTER.

Do you remember how on Saturday after the Tennessee game, there were those (01ChickenHawk) who were positively stating that Georgia would fall out of the top ten, heck the top 20 in the polls? Appears that the AP, USA Today, and ESPN voters must be completely ignorant and Georgia homers, as they have kept Georgia at 5. Shoot, their point totals are almost the same from last week to this week. Georgia even gained a little in total points in each of those polls. Of course the only one that really matters is the last one of the year, but I thought a little recognition of some of the fans ability to influence the polls should be noted.

Watching Theus this is year is a reminder of just why you see so few freshman starters in the SEC on the OL JT has all the talent in the world he is just got to get his man strength to go with it. One of the reasons UT line struggled so bad last year and the year before was directly related to the number of freshman they were forced to play, flip side to why they are so much better is that those freshman have grown and have experience now. But the young man could use some help this week for sure.

Do any of you find it hard to believe that Paul Johnson, during that great run at Georgia Southern, didn’t develop a relationship with the high school coach’s in Georgia? A lot of the Tech people said this weekend he doesn’t have one and it hurts recruiting in state????

How can anybody blame the score Saturday on the defense? 14 points in the second half. People complaining about the 30 first half points which were handed to UT with a couple of fumbles inside the 15 yrd line and the pick six. UT only had about 130 yards of offense in the first half because they had a short field. They do have some horses on O and Bray is a very good QB. I thought the D did well and in the end saved the game.

From ESPN insider (who pays for this crap?): Why Georgia is not a legit top 5 team.

“But if we take a closer look at Georgia’s metrics and game tape, it is clear that this is a flawed and overrated squad that may barely deserve a top-10 ranking at this moment, let alone top-5.”

Ouch. What exactly are “metrics” anyway?

I love the Georgia basher last week after the Vandy game that Marshall would be riding the pine behind Gurley for his career.

As a freshman in his fifth game, the guy scores two TD’s and gains over 150 yards and is 7th in the SEC in rushing at this point. Yeah, he is riding the pine and wasting away.

As a college football fan – UGA/TN exciting game to watch.

If you are a Georgia fan – you have realized that your team has some serious issues – expecially on defense and 4th quarter play calling.

In the 4th Q – UGA played the same as the Michigan State game – by playing not to lose – you could see it in the very conservative play calling, inability to get a 1st down, inability to put the game away.

So, for now at least – I stand by me preseason predictions:
1. USCe will win the East – by virtue of beating UGA and Florida strait up.
2. Florida will be 6-2 or 7-1 in the SEC East – losing to USCe and maybe LSU (may have to change the LSU).
3. UGA will finish SEC East 3rd at 6-2 – with losses to USCe and Florida.

USCe , Florida and UGA are quality teams – all probably worthy of top 10 ranking.

Hey – this could change – but those were my pre-season predicitions.

The SEC EAST is definately more fun to watch this year – as LSU might be the 4th best team in the SEC EAST and Arkansas has imploded. I have not paid too much attention to TAMU – as they are too new – but will start looking at them our game approaches.

Lastly, how many UGA fans enjoyed seeing CAM fumble yesterday – and the Falcons pull out the victory. Hoping for continued sturggles at Auburn.

Dawgfan:

ESPN may be right that the Dawgs are over-rated. However, we get a chance to prove it on the field. UGA beating South Carolina would be a very big step. If we lose the game, we will drop in the rankings anyway, so their talk is just idle chatter at this point.

Either way, we still have the opportunity to win games.

1. Between Stalling’s and Saban, you pretty much stunk.
2. during that time, even little ole Jawja beat you about every time we played you
3. You fired a coach before he coached ONE game for being in a Ti$$y bar.
4, You live on probation
5. You have a fan who killed Auburn’s beautiful trees for losing a frigging football game.
6. Enjoy the ride. They don’t last

Too many Dawg fans doubting our beloved team. Yes a few mistakes were made and they didn’t play their best game against UT. But no team will have 12 blowouts or dominated games. You will have to face adversity and how you respond determines who you are. When UT had opportunities late in the game, our D rose up. May not have been pretty, but we are 5-0 and where we need to be. Don’t count these guys out before they get on the bus to Colombia. I think they got their scare and they will refocus and be the Dawgs we love. GOOO DAWGS!!!!!

@ dawgfan 1:29 – I agree with ESPN, UGA’s defense is giving up way too many yards and points. As the saying goes – you win championships with defense.

Florida and South Carolina defenses are much better than UGA’s – based on comparing years allowed, points allowed, etc, turn overs, etc.

UGA has played 2 cupcakes – Buffalo, FL ATL, and SEC schedule that includes Vandy and newbie Mizzou (a middle pack or lower tier SEC school).

UGA on offense is very good – but the 4Q against Tennessee was alarming. NO first downs, no points, very conservative play calling – an inability to put the game away. TN loaded the box knowing Richt/Bobo would go conservative – and TN dang near won the game because of it. looked like Michigan State game – played not to lose.

I could not agree more with ESPN – UGA is top 15 – but top 10????

IMHO – ALABAMA, USCe, FLorida, LSU are all better than UGA. Add to that mix, Oregon, FSU, Notre Dame, USC, TX, OK State, Kansas State better than UGA.

UGA is in the mix – just keep winning. But with that defense – just do not see it being top 5 – and maybe not TOP 10.
