Spurrier on Georgia: ‘I keep seeing all those long runs by those freshman Bulldogs’

Informed Sunday that ESPN’s College Gameday crew is coming to Columbia on Saturday for No. 5 Georgia’s game against No. 6 South Carolina, Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said that’s just the way he likes it.

The last time that group set up outside Williams-Brice Stadium was on Oct. 9th, 2010, and South Carolina knocked off No. 1-ranked Alabama 35-21.

“We certainly do [like games such as this],” Spurrier said on his weekly teleconference call Sunday. “The last time they were here, obviously that was one of the best days in Carolina football history. It was the first time we had ever beat a No. 1 team. It adds to the importance of the game. It sort of lets the world know and the country know South Carolina football’s pretty good. We’re not quite where we want to be yet, but we’re up there amongst them and hopefully we can keep pushing on.”

The matchup everybody anticipated for Week 6 of the season has materialized. Both the Gamecocks (5-0, 3-0 SEC) and Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) were consensus preseason picks as the top two teams from the East and they arrive undefeated and ranked among the nation’s best. Both teams negotiated potential trap games this past weekend. South Carolina trailed Kentucky 17-7 in the first half but surged ahead in the second to win 38-17. Georgia wasted several three-score leads to outlast Tennessee 51-44 at Sanford Stadium.

Spurrier said he hasn’t had a chance yet to sit down and study the Bulldogs on video, but he has been impressed by what he has seen on highlight shows.

“I keep seeing a bunch of long runs by those Bulldog freshmen,” said Spurrier, speaking of tailbacks Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. “That’s probably a good message when you think you lose a top running that has some issues like the kid they had there last year [Isaiah Crowell], maybe the next guys can come in and play as well or better. So the long runs is what I noticed mostly yesterday. And, of course [Aaron] Murray hit a bunch of big passes, too. They were a scoring machine.”

Georgia comes into the game leading the SEC in scoring (48.2 ppg) and total offense (536 ypg). But the Gamecocks, behind quarterback Connor Shaw and running back Marcus Lattimore, have been lighting it up, too. South Carolina averages 36.6 points and 409 yards per game.

The difference might be the Gamecocks’ defense, which is giving up an average of  just 11.2 points and 288 yards. That’s second and third in the SEC, respectively.

Conversely, Georgia’s defense has been a bit of a disappointment. The Bulldogs are in the bottom half of the league against the score (22.0 ppg) and in yards allowed (370 pg).

“Well, they’re scoring so fast,” Spurrier said. “You score fast and your defense has to play a lot more. It usually takes us a while to get it down the field and score. Our defense is hopefully only out there 58 to 63 plays, something like that. Georgia’s been scoring so fast and there’s been so many turnovers in their games, the defense is just playing more plays. No, they can make plays all over the place. And even last year we didn’t move the ball that well at all.”

Spurrier is referring to last season’s 45-42 win at Georgia in which the Bulldogs gave up 14 points on a pick-six and a fake punt and another 14 indirectly on offensive turnovers deep in their own territory.

You’d think that all would be warm and fuzzy with the Gamecocks, what with them being in some unchartered waters in program history from a winning standpoint. But Spurrier refused to take questions after the UAB game and a couple of other news conferences due to his differences over what he deemed was negative reporting by the local newspaper, The Columbia State. In particular he seems to be having issues with columnist Ron Morris, who has been known to take him to task from time-to-time.

“Well, it’s only one guy,” Spurrier said Sunday. “I just said I had enough of it. Hopefully we got the problem under control. I guess time will tell.”

Morris wrote a column about their strained relationship this past week.

Stay tuned for much more coverage of the Gamecocks and the Bulldogs this week as we get set for what will certainly be the most anticipated Georgia-South Carolina game in the long and storied history of that series.

I could care less about being first or second or third but I do know that only one person can win the heisman and Gurshall is two. I am a hure UGA fan but Gurshall just does not sound right. Bush and Lendale White never had a cheesy name so why do we? I think its something Edward Aschoff from ESPN came up with. Marshall and Gurley sounds right to me

I agree, beanster. Spurrier pointed out something that should be quite obvious to everyone. We need to take our time out on the field. It’s great we’re scoring so many points, but we do score too fast and our defense then has to play a lot more.

I have a novel idea: why don’t we let them play the game, rather than trying to divine the score ahead of time! The predictions are never right, so why bother? Spurrier is a great coach, and I think beating UGA is probably up near the top of his goal sheet every year. Maybe that is why he got back into SEC football–couldn’t stand life if he couldn’t beat the Dawgs. Let’s hope Richt and company have been putting some time in on attacking SC over the summer. Their DEs are going to be murder for our new tackles. I suspect Murray might have to do some scrambling…Go Dawgs! You never can tell, as nothing would surprise me at this point.

I disagree, folks. Our offensive production is better than ever! Our D’s strength is run D. If we can score 55 and keep them on the field the whole time, we should win big! Score often and quickly. We are deep on D, too. Strike fast and keep up the pace.

@dawggirl — I admit that it does seems rather counterintuitive to suggest that our problem is that we score too often and too quickly, but it seems to me that the coaches pay little attention to this aspect of the game. If the D just had a long series and is huffing and puffing on the sidelines, we’re not doing ourselves any favors calling three runs up the gut. I’m not suggesting we tell Marshall or Gurley to step out of bounds instead of score, but perhaps we should play for 10 yards at a time more often, especially if the D is gassed (like they were in the 2nd half yesterday).

beanster

I am pretty sure that’s what we did yesterday, CHDawg, and we were very fortunate to get a W against a mid tier team in the East. I am afraid if we try that all season we may not be so fortunate at some point.

Damn guys!! Maybe Marshall should have taken a knee rather than breaking those two big runs. How inconsiderate of him! He clearly wasn’t thinking about the defense!! beanster

September 30th, 2012

How about this then: Be conscious of how long the D has been on the field and make the appropriate play calls on offense. Richt’s early teams were superior ball control teams. Look at LSU last year, they were all ball control on offense combined with a stifling defense. We don’t need to go for a bomb every 2nd down just because it’s a passing down. Get a 1st down, keep the chains moving, our D off the field and theirs on it.

UGA is better on offense and S.C. may be better on defense. Could come down to special teams like it did last year. UGA definitely was better than S.C. last year but special teams killed UGA. Tennessee is much better on the OL than S.C. UGA crushed Vandy and S.C. squeaked by in the 1st game of the year.

You are spot on about the defense spending too much time on the field. UGA needs to control the clock better. The defense spent 91 plays on the field yesterday and that is way too many plays on that side. We need to control the play a little bit more, and give the defense sometime to recover. It is ironic, but last year we couldn’t keep on the field because our offense wasn’t good enough and made too many mistakes and this year, we can’t keep on the field because we score too fast. I never thought qwe would have to worry about the speed of our offense, putting us at a disadvantage in a game.
S.C. presents a good challenge on defense for us though, so maybe we will have to slow down a bit, and equal out the play a little on both sides. It will take a big effort to shore up the D this week, and contain the run. We can’t always count on just out scoring the opponent all of the time.
I think mistakes will determine who wins this game. Whoever flinches the most will lose.

I think Spurrier makes a great point that we score too fast. However, lets not buy into his psychology because the last thing he would want to do is get into a shootout with a high power offense. Our d-line just has to do a better job at stopping people.

The D Line needs to be challanged. They are too big to keep getting blown off the line. The ILB can’t get off of blocks and the NG is getting manhandled. The DC needs to give them a gut check for the season. Branden Smith needs to be on the bench. He couldn’t cover a bucket with a lid on it. The defense looks horrible and the dumb excuse about the offense scoring too fast is pathetic. The D has depth, they just need to play better. Very poor execution. There was no pressure on Tenn. QB until towards the end of the game. If the D is supposed to have so many players ready for the NFL, they better start playing like it. It’s do or die next week.

I don’t want to hear anything about the offense scoring too fast. You take the points where you can get them. If they come on 1 play drives, be happy and hope the next series is just as quick. If you want the defense to have fewer plays on the field, make the other team go 3 and out!! I think that might cut down the number of plays on defense just a little bit!!

According to you geniuses, it’s all execution. You know who makes excuses about players not executing? Willie Martinez. You know who else? Paul Johnson.

I am embarrassed as a UGA fan for some of things you self appointed geniuses are coming up with as to why we are under performing on defense. There are several reasons as to why we played poorly on defense yesterday. So, for those of you with a mildly retarded football IQ here are the reasons….

1.) UT has a really good Offensive Line (credit where credit is due)
2.) They also kept a TE & RB in to block most of their pass plays (that was there counter for Jarvis Jones)
3.). Our D-line cannot get up field and disrupt running lanes or squeeze the pocket (Rodney Garners fault)
4.). Last year we were great on 3rd downs, yesterday not so much. (See points 5 & 6)
5.). Branden Smith is a total liability on 3rd down passing situations. We should not expect him to play man 2 man / bump & run against guys that out weigh him by at least 25 lbs and are 5-6″ taller. (They looked for that match up all night)
6.). Malcolm Mitchell needs to play strictly defense (he needs to replace Branden Smith) and we don’t need him on offense unless Bennett, King or Brown get injured.
7.) Lastly, they ran it down our throats yesterday because we used Florida’s approach to countering UT’s deep threat capability (We gave up the run and played safeties very deep (also see point #1) those two reasons together made our run defense look rather pedestrian.

Now, with all that being said, we will handle SC because they really don’t have the recievers to give us fits like UT. We will win this game but we have to do a good job of protecting Murray and blocking SC’s front 4. Go Dawgs!

I agree with your post. Also, that is the last game you will see UGA in that defensive scheme. UGA coaches were really afraid of UT’s WR’s and Bray. The players aren’t used to playing that passive scheme and missed several assignments, not to mention the problem of having to rotate in guys who hadn’t played before. UGA will play much more aggressive on D the rest of the way. I expect the D to start turning it on.

Bobo’s job is to score as often and as fast as he can… Grantham’s job is to stop the other team from scoring! Both coordinator’s did their job…. the problem lies in the turnover’s and metal lapses by certain players (Malcolm Mitchell, Marshall Morgan, Aaron Murray, Rantavious Wooten, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall) ALL of these are easily correctable! 10-A-C was given 20 points due to turnovers and thanks to M. Morgan 2 XP taken away from UGA’s score.

The important factor in this 10-A-C game, is the fact that UGA despite the turnovers and mental lapse’s STILL got the W…. it wasn’t pretty, but UGA survived though all the ugly, still won and never lost their composure once!

This game happened at a perfect time too… right before the SC game! This game should serve as a wake-up call (slap in the face) to both the players and coaches… stay focused (No Regrets) turn the ball over next Saturday and SC will get the W. This was a most humbling game at best!

Spurrior has his opinion. Score often and the defense needs to win the 1st down and 3rd down battles. Make it 2nd and long and then 3rd and long. Earn it and get off the field. Right now the D has not earned it. Score often and at will against Spurrier. He is afraid of this explosiveness.

Fellow Dawgs,

The real one’s anyway this was the first game where we had Rambo and Ogletree back plus Commings moved back to Corner so they were rusty. Next these guys had beaten Tennessee the last 2 years and it appeared to me that we went into a little bit of a shell when got out to the 17 point lead so easily and we relaxed and then the mental mistakes by Murray, ball security, place on the field by Marshall and Gurly happened allowing Tennessee to score those 3 TDs in the 2nd quarter before the half.

As you saw yesterday this Tennessee team is pretty good on offense and did not fold, plus they had some help from the officials by not calling those blatant holding on their O-line. We shut them down in the fourth quarter by forcing those 3 turnovers. The talent is there all over the field on this team and they are starting to jell into a very good team. I believe they will acquit themselves quiet nicely come Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina and this time next week there will be more of these so called experts obsessing over this and that etc.

Big Dawg is right….the defense matches up better against the Chickens than with UT. Ogletree was very rusty – he whiffed on two tackles including the reverse TD by Patterson…..he needed to get used to game speed again……I think we see much better defensive play and beat the Chickes.

LakeDawg,
My take of the UF/LSU game is…who knows? I truly think my Gators are much better than last year, but not sure if we care beat a top 5 team yet. We’ll have to play well and win the turnover battle to have a shot. I don’t think we’ll be able to start from behind and come back on LSU the way we did against A&M and UT.
Go Gators!

Did anyone not notice that we were playing 2 deep safeties most of the night last night and that’s why Neal all of a sudden looked like a Heisman candidate? Apparently Grantham decided that we were not going to let Bray beat us with a big play down field and he did not. If Neal ran the ball on us some so be it. The defense will not play that way against Carolina. They will be playing closer to the line to stop Lattimore and Shaw from running.

It would have been okay if our offense had not fumbled the ball twice on the 15 yard line giving them a short field. Up until then the only way they could scored was a pick 6 on a tipped ball. It was a fluky game. A pick 6 on a tipped ball, two fumbles on the 15, and a run by Patterson where he was going to pass the ball but it was not there so he ran. You got to tip your hat to him because he made a great play on a broken play.

Sure UGA beat the crap out of Vandy, but SC beat Missouri more handily than UGA did and were never threatened while UGA had to come back. Make sure that Murray doesn’t get blind sided. Murray needs to not take very long to make a decision. Georgia only has 4 players to make sure they stop or slow down. Lattimore who is a step slower right now hitting holes, Shaw , who is not very accurate if we can pressure him , Clowney and Taylor. South Carolina doesn’t have great defensive backs and Murray should be able to throw complete passes all day.
The key is no turnovers, and we will win this game by 14 at least and not lose like we did last year. South Carolina did not win the game last year , we lost it.

most of you should know by now that we don’t play the same D for all teams. Example is we played very soft in secondary against the very explosive UT crowd….when you do that, sometimes short runs become longer runs, and always many more shorter passes are completed and some of those break for more yardage. That type of D is designed to win the game by holding the homeruns to a lower amount. UTs homeruns were there but not so many and not nearly as many as ours. SC will be schemed totally differently and our run stoppers have gotten some rust off. Our coaches know the game

Did anybody else notice what happened every time Gray Danielson made a comment about Murray “being trusted by the coaches” (pick six) or he has “the confidence of the coaching staff” (fumble at the 10)?

I still like our defense a lot. It will be a shootout again this week but I think we have the horses to hold on.

GA needs to score quick and often. The less time Murray has on the field the less chance to turn the ball over. SC defense will pressure him all day. He has tendency to get rattled after he fumbles or gets picked and that usually results in Bobo going conservative on the next series or two especially against good teams. The Dawgs run D is not as good as they think they are. Its showed up in all the games and TN had no trouble late in the game of pushing the GA line back 5 yds w/ease. Can’t do that vs lattimore and co. CTG might have to sacrifice a couple of LB’s to bolster the run stop. GA can win this game if they play their A game on both sides of the ball. eliminate TO’s, pass protect and run the ball, get some TO’s and for pete sakes make the PAT’s!! Otherwise, it’ll be a repeat of last years game.

How can so many UNINFORMED people on here suggest that we need to slow down our offense because we are “Scoring too Fast” ???

The ONLY time we should even consider doing such is when we have a small lead and have an opportunity to “Run out the clock”!!!!!!!!!!

Are we to believe that instead of taking it to the house our RBs & WRs should fall down or run out of bounds once they have a first down??? It is unreal how STUPID that is but one FOOL starts it up and several FOOLs chime in!!!!!!!!!

Even worse is the idiots that want to blame Murray for Tennessee’s pick 6(the ball was tipped by a defender and that was obvious to a 3rd grader) and Murray’s fumble(Our back allowed a blitzing LB to come untouched to hit Murray). The Murray haters are even bigger idiots and Single Digit IQs than the “Slow down our offense” KNOW-NOTHINGS!!!

After 5 games one would think these “Wannabe” fans would have figured out some of this by now!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing that would make “ESPN Game Day” in Columbia anymore ridiculous would be to have the “walking dead”, Lou Holtz on the set. Carolina could line up against the UNDEFEATED 1972 MIAMI DOLPHINS and Holtz would pick the gamecocks to win. This man doesn’t have an objective bone in his body. He is a Caroliner Homer if there ever was one. He wanted sooo bad for his sone “Skip” to be the HC after he left. Caroliner boosters got smart and hired the evil genius. Had they hired Skip, Lou Baby would have been tethered to a phone giving young holtz pointers. Lou, himself, wasn’t much of a coach while at Caroliner

Spurrier reinterated a point i made after the game. We were scoring so quickly that our D had to play a whole lot more than they were accustomed to. Its obvious that C-Wash needs to bring some heat or sit him down and put G Smith in there. Jordan Jenkins needs more snaps along with J Rome!

You can only score too fas when you are scoring in the 4 th qtr when you are hoping to grind out a winning td as the clock runs out. Unfortunately, we don’t score we’ll in the 4th. Bs TN the offense was of NO help in the 4th qtr and we were very fortunate the defense FINALLY stepped up and stopped them. I would take Ga and +7 on a bet.

I have to disagree with you on the LSU vs UF game. I think it will be reversed. I think UF beats LSU by 10. Hey, I’ve been known to be wrong before. UF’s bye week will help them also that they are playing at the swamp helps them. I just have not been too impressed by LSU. Of course they keep winning and that’s all that matters.

I just think Saban has that team dialed in right now. LSU will be their only test during the regular season, but that won’t be as strong as a test as I initially thought. Bama still wins by at least 2 TD’s.
As for UF / LSU. It’s more gut than anything. Just have a feeling UF wins this one.

we score too fast? Are you guys kidding me? Are we really complaining that are plays are working too well? just because the opposing coach says it does not means it make sense. this is real football not a video game. you score when ever the opportunity presents itself. Plus we have great balalnce with running and passing so its not just long bombs every play. we are talking about steve spurrier here, the king the spread run and gun offense when he was in fla. Im glad you guys are not our coach. if you coached uga opposing coaches would say just anything knowing that you would say ” you know what thats a good idea. Hey guys, I’m not buying the excuse that the reason the defense has struggled is because the offense scores too fast. That’s BS. Most of our starting Defense will be drafted in the NFL (2 or 3 likely in the 1st round and 2 or 3 more in the 2nd round) so no more excuses! It’s time for them to step up and play like they are capable.

Gameday is in Cola because it has two teams in the Top 6. Of course LSU-FL is a big game, but screw your head on straight, dude. Beanster is right: “We need to be coached properly and get the scheme right. Something ain’t workin’…” We’ve got the talent in the players, just no so much in the coaches.

[...] I’ve looked at this game from just about every angle a fan, analyst, sports writer, etc. can look at it. At the end of the day it comes down to one thing: knowing you have the better team and playing like it. You can say South Carolina “only” gives up 11.2 points per game. But that would be overlooking the fact that they’ve only played Vanderbilt, Kentucky, East Carolina, UAB, and Missouri. So here’s hoping that those “offensive behemoths” didn’t skew the numbers too badly until now. You can say South Carolina has stud running back Marcus Lattimore; again you would be overlooking that Georgia has the number one (Todd Gurley) and number six (Keith Marshall) running backs in the SEC and playing at high levels year-one (although thankfully, Spurrier is well aware of this). [...]

The common argument about how fast georgia can score as a reason their D is so gassed as the game goes on. Given how USC can take 5-8 minutes to drive the field further gassing the Georgia D
I can’t see how it’s a good thing especially if the USC D gets a 3 and out after a long drive, then the USC offense does another long drive so that’s 10-15 minutes with 1 offensive series. That would get the Georgia O out of sync further complicating matters. Just something to think about.

It will be a tuff one for the dawgs. The interesting thing about visor man is how much folks tolerate his bully behavior. Only one problem in the press. Problem because he disagrees with you? Really. Frankly, I don’t always agree with Morris either, but I do believe in free speech. So Spurrier says he has people working on the problem and then the reporter is released from the paper? For real? Where are all the backers of the constitution out there ? Steve is a whinning nasty brat. Oh, gee will he try to hunt me down and have me fired from the blog? 1st amendment anyone? Game changer Jenkins was in the backfield we were not blown off the ball. Neal was great at finding holes and having a safety playing up will make a huge difference! I do think we should run a 4-3 some with both of the big boys in there to discourage the run!!!! I also think ogle tree has to linger on runs so that we don’t miss opportunities @ the line!!!!! Just remember we are 5-0!
