Todd Gurley plows through Vanderbilt defenders (AJC photo/Brant Sanderlin)
ATHENS — As the hype builds around Georgia freshman tailbacks Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, one of their teammates has settled on a nickname for the duo.
“Gurshall, that’s what I call them,” wide receiver Tavarres King said.
As King excitedly enunciates it, the combination of the first syllable of Gurley and the second syllable of Marshall rhymes with … Herschel.
The wildly premature suggestion that the Gurley-Marshall tandem is somehow reminiscent of Herschel Walker, the greatest Georgia tailback, reflects the excitement the freshmen have stirred.

Keith Marshall breaks a Vanderbilt tackle (AJC photo/Brant Sanderlin)
Tailback is a position that commands attention, good or bad. In the previous two seasons, Georgia tailbacks were known more for the bad — arrests, suspensions, dismissals, injuries. With Gurshall, things seem good again at the position.
“I went to the dining hall one day, and they started clapping,” Marshall said.
Another example of their celebrity: “Sat next to Todd Gurley at Zaxby’s,” a UGA student tweeted this week. “What are you doing with your life?”
Four games into their college careers, Gurley and Marshall have combined to rush for 670 yards and score 10 touchdowns. Gurley, the starter, leads the SEC in rushing (101.5 yards per game), scoring (10.5 points per game) and all-purpose yards (164.2 per game). His roommate and running mate, Marshall, has added 66 rushing yards per game.
In last week’s win over Vanderbilt, the duo combined for 212 rushing yards (Gurley 130, Marshall 82) and four touchdowns (two apiece). Each had a stirring TD run — Marshall a 52-yarder and Gurley a 29-yarder that featured several broken tackles and a safety stiff-armed to the ground.
“Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” King said of Gurley’s run. “Well, not live. I saw Herschel do something like that [on tape].
“When [Gurley] made that run, in my head, I heard Munson: ‘My God, a freshman!’” said King, referring to legendary UGA broadcaster Larry Munson’s famous call of Walker’s debut against Tennessee in 1980.
Gurley and Marshall, who grew up 70 miles apart in North Carolina and became friends after meeting at a high school track meet, are aware of their growing celebrity but seem unfazed by it.
“You have people come up to you and everything,” Gurley said, “but I’m still taking it the same.”
“They don’t get caught up in it, and probably the best thing as a teammate is knowing they don’t hold themselves so highly,” linebacker Christian Robinson said. “They just show up everyday to work.”
“They are mature beyond their years,” receiver Michael Bennett said. “Eighteen years old and all this attention coming on them — they’re handling it really well.”
They arrived in Athens after several troubled seasons for the tailback position; Caleb King, Washaun Ealey, Carlton Thomas and Isaiah Crowell drew suspensions for various transgressions and eventually left the team.
“In the past, it’s kind of been a never-know-what-you’re-going-to-get type of thing,” Robinson said. “When you have guys of high character that show up everyday to work, you can trust them and you don’t get as frustrated with them when things don’t go well. I guess, when things are different, you can kind of pinpoint that maybe that’s why we weren’t having the production — behavior issues and things like that. We don’t have that anymore, and this team is a lot better because of it.”
Running backs coach Bryan McClendon is keeping an eye on how Gurley and Marshall handle the adulation that comes with success, although he isn’t worried.
“I’m a part of the process of keeping them humble,” McClendon said. “But they come from a great family, both of those guys. They’re very humble people to begin with, so that’s not something you foresee being an issue at all.”
On the field, the 6-foot-1, 218-pound Gurley is a blend of power and speed, while the 5-11, 216-pound Marshall is a former high school sprint champion who once competed against Gurley in the 100-meter dash. “I won,” Marshall said.
“Those two guys are thunder [Gurley] and lightning [Marshall],” King said.
Off the field, Gurley is affectionately described as “goofy” by several teammates and does not disagree. “I just like to have some fun, pick everybody up,” Gurley said. “I probably am a little goofy.” Marshall is described as the quieter of the two.
“They both act like little kids. They’re really cheerful, messing around the locker room, joking,” quarterback Aaron Murray said. “I don’t see them as guys who are going to let their fame or their success get to their heads too much and think they’re all that.”

Every indication suggests that they are both good citizens- appear to have been raised right. After Ealey, King and Crowell, that is so refreshing! It is great to have these young men in the fold- blossoming DGDs!

How lucky are we as UGA fans to witness the beginning of these two young Bulldawgs careers? This offense can be extremly good this year. As our Oline matures, so does the abilities of these two gifted kids. If that wasn’t enough, Murray leads this opera of offense like a world-class maestro conducting a major symphony. Bobo has choreographed his offense like a centralized explosion, expanding outward towards an unsuspecting defense. The only people not enjoying watching our offense work, are on the receiving end of our touchdowns. I was rough on Coach Bobo before the season started but alas, as his offense shines, so does his appeal to other colleges looking for a new star as their Head Coach. What a great time to be a fan at the UGA…

“I’m a part of the process of keeping them humble,” McClendon said.
Interesting that he said that. McClendon’s “process” of keeping his RBs in line has been a trainwreck for years. He is just lucky to have two talented players who are mature enough to not need his help.

I think the nickname is funny but I’m with Flat Tire on the Herschel comparisons. Let the young men be who they are and do what they can do and not worry about trying to live up to a legend. There will never be another Herschel Walker and that is good. Trying to be someone other than who you are has caused unimaginable heart ache for millions maybe billions of humans. Maybe one day there will be someone better than Herschel… I don’t know how but it’ll probably happen.

It’s so refreshing to read something about the running back position at UGA that is positive! I don’t believe even CMR knew what he had in the Gurley and Marshall duo! I pray for their safety and continued success! They, no doubt, are the key to making the offense click. More focus on them is helping take a lot of pressure off Murray. Suddenly, I don’t hear as much bad mouthing about Bobo either. Hopefully, the naysayers are looking for rocks to crawl under.
I hope all the DAWGS bring their hob-nail boots to the game! I watched that game in Tennessee and knew it was going to be one of Larry Munson’s best calls! Talking about stunning over 100,000 people as the game ended! I’ve never seen so many mouths drop.
I live in Knoxville and wish to report that they are still talking about Herschel’s debut when he ran over Bill Battle on his way to the end zone! Just remember, Vol fans, it was Derek Dooley’s father, the wonderful and famous Vince Dooley who put Hershel into that game and turned him loose! GO DAWGS……do it again!!

True, we haven’t played a top defense yet, but neither has Tennessee. Bray will hit a couple of big plays on us simply because of the number of times they throw it deep. It’s bound to work eventually.
Also, when we slam the door on their highly suspect running game, they won’t have any choice but to try and chunk it even more than they usually do. I don’t envision Bray remaining upright often enough to beat us in that way, and he doesn’t handle pressure well at all, so I expect us to pull away before the fourth quarter. We’ll have him throwing his helmet on the sidelines by then.

One thing we have to watch is building them up too quickly and setting them up for a big fall if they have a bad day. I love the way both of these guys run, but it wasn’t against top ten defenses. This week starts a string of increasingly competitive Ds. Let’s hope they keep pounding. One or two more weeks of 9+ypc and Gurley will really start getting national attention, and rightly so. DAWGRX, you broke the hater/troll code! If Georgia beats them, they are and were cupcakes, regardless of anything else. I like our schedule and ranking this year. We really don’t need to worry about anything but winning. If we win them all, we should be in the BCS because of strength of schedule. If we don’t win, we don’t get there. The talk and rankings matter a lot less this year to us unless everybody starts losing and we do, too. Go Dawgs.

@Nothing could be finer….seems to me that USC couldn’t stop UGA at all last year, either. You had two touchdowns from your defense and one touchdown on a fake punt. Comparing offenses, UGA’s manhandled USC 42-24. And we didn’t have Gurley and Marshall, then. I’d say USC should be as worried as you think UGA should be. Think about that…..

I am a true lover of “old man football” It would be nice to see Gurshall “dot the I” on most plays with a fullback in front. Feed it to them 30 times per game. What fun that would be. I love nothing more than to see a powerful running offense line up against a defense that KNOWS what is coming, but can’t do anything to stop it. Bobo, being a former pass-happy quarterback won’t let it happen, though. That’s unfortunate. A powerful running game can completely demoralize an opposing defense. Tech has proven that in recent games; their defense just sucks and they can’t outscore everyone. Buck Belue was a subpar passing quarterback, but looked like a hero by his good receivers and Herschel. His best plays were where he fed Herschel the ball in such a manner to allow him to get up to speed and hit the line at the right time and place. I even saw him throw a block for Herschel on more than one occasion. But I guess that is not good enough anymore. If a quarterback is not passing 25 or 30 times per game, it is an insult to him. Come on, Bobo; unleash Gurshall and watch the fun!

@ Nothing could be finer, I would temper that enthusiasm you have for your rushing defense. I mean, you guys have played Vandy (58th in rushing), East Carolina (113th in rushing), UAB (109th in rushing), and Mizzu (76th in rushing). UGA is currently ranked 19th in rushing. If you guys can stop us, then the #8 rating is warrented. If you look at the two teams we have both played, we beat Vandy like a drum where you squeaked out a victory only because of a blow pass interference call, and we both beat Mizzu by 21 points.
I am not sure that we will beat your team, but I feel better statistically about our chances than I would if I were in your shoes.

Think about it, fumbles and interceptions are considered stops. Erin Murray had both and both went for TD’s. Pretty good.

I really want to predict us hanging 40+ like DAWGINLEX did but I’m not as confident as last week. I guess my mind takes me back to 2007 when I went to Knoxville and got petaled by empty whiskey bottles as my Dawgs go throttled by a freshman QB. 28-0 in the first quarter I think! Also this . . . In the past I have been extremely critical of Bobo’s playcalling. I don’t know if my eyes are deceiving me or not but it seems like he’s running the ball more so far this season. Maybe it’s because he has more trust in the backfield but I think it’s always a good thing to establish the run first before opening up the passing game. Great players can make even a mediocre OC look great but perhaps Bobo has finally learned to love the rushing game as much as he loves to pass.

It would be easy to look ahead to next week in Carolina as a win tomorrow means the whole season comes down to Carolina and Florida. Although the Auburn team could keep improving by the time we get there. All that said, This Dawg team brings a load to the game and everybody we play better be ready.

Will all of the UT and UGA probation officers be sitting together in the stadium? They should be recognized by the announcer for all their hard work.
Will Russ be at the game, or has he croaked already?
Will the dwags be wearing their regular home uniforms, or will they bring out their Nike clown costumes from last year?
Tennessee, a beacon of integrity and honor, will defeat the very dishonorable UGA hooligans by two TDs”
Random thoughts, are you referring to the Tennessee of Nu’Keesse Richardson, Mike Edwards, Janzen Jackson, Tyler Smith, Melvin Goins, Brian Williams, Cameron Tatum, Da’Rick Rogers, etc. Is this the program that you describe as “a beacon of integriy and honor”?

Point taken, Nothing Could be Finer, but STILL, inspite of those “stops”, UGA STILL scored 42 points on that vaunted defense. No doubt, Carolina has a great defense, but the offense leaves a lot to be desired. It will be a great, hard hitting game, but I’m very confident that UGA’s offense against USC’s defense leans much more in favor of UGA than USC’s offense against UGA’s defense. But hold on that, we still have an orange to squeeze tomorrow. Then we’ll line it up in Columbia on the 6th to see what is what.

Instead of bad comebacks, why don’t you just answer the questions posed… When and where have you coached, played, etc., etc… I don’t recall any of the Dogs coaches or players talking about a national championship… You’re typical of pussied commentators… You talk like you know something about something you’ve never done… Go ahead, since you haven’t a clue, and search out alexis over there…He/she doesn’t mind a bit when fellow armchair whinesters join in on the wannabe suckfest… SCHLLLLLLUUUUUUUURRRRRRPPPPP…

Message:
“Beware the Gurshall’walky, my son!
The feet that juke, the thighs that crush!
Beware the JJ bird, and shun
The frumious Gurshall rush!”
He took the piggy skin hand off:
The long time Munson voice he sought —
So running by the Ogle tree,
Sprinting fast, not to be caught.
And in full gallop along he flew,
The Gurshall’walky, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through Sanford wood,
And stomping as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The shoulder pads went snicker-snoot!
Noses smashed, and helmets bashed
Without a hobnail boot.
“And, can thou slay the Gurshall’walky?”
The two headed monster back.
Not with eleven, or seven plus seven!
Beware the Gurshall attack

Hey Flat Tire, you know I’m not a koolaid drinker, but until we lose a game we shouldn’t, THIS SEASON, let’s try to be happy.
I don’t think anybody at UGA can help that we haen’t played or beaten ranked teams so far, THIS SEASON, because we haven’t played one such team.
But next Saturay, we can rejoice, or say that it’s the same-old, same-old, cause we are gonna play one.
Til then,

It is even better because we also have Boo Malcome who is a very good tailback as well. But you have to remember fellow Dawgs it starts and ends with the offensive line and whether they are sustaining their blocks. We have some guys on the OL now who are not only talented but seem to be jelling together quicker than the lines we have had in the recent past.

BigDawg, great post. Malcome is a solid TB and he has run well when they have used him. I think his strength and fresh legs may be a difference maker at some point this season. The line did much better against Vandy, and if they keep improving the sky is the limit. If they can’t protect Murray, I am thankful he has the potential to make plays while scrambling. I am really excited to see what the whole D can do together. We need some picks out of our secondary. They have been jumbled this year and there have been a lot of new guys learning the ropes.

Key to this weekend’s game is Dawg offense against UT Defense. And I don’t think UT can put many brakes on Murray, Marshall, King et al. On the other side, GA defense is getting better and will get their biggest passing test against Bray. I suspect UT running game will struggle and GA will claim a win, 38-17 dominating the second half.

They are ignoring Richt’s history of even his best teams losing a game or two that they shouldn’t.
I’m not ignoring it, but I see differences in offensive philosophy this season – and either it is like JB says is Murray’s audibles, or what I say is Richt/Bobo trusting Murray protecting the ball better, and expanding the playbook, or maybe a combination of both.
Something has changed – and I like it.
I also think from here forward, you will see the D becoming even mre formidable.
Come on Flat Tire, let’s at least be cautiously optimistic . . .

Murray is the lynchpin. Accurate passes, no mistakes or brainfarts and this is a blow out. Turnovers, fumbles interceptions and we might not get a win. Last weeks D would hold to Vols in check. Resting on Murray as I see it

The sad litttle haters live for fridays this season. Saturday and sunday are no fun because the blogs have nothing but positive Georgia news and of course the bandwagoners have taken the place of the “I told you so” losers. During the week mommy won’t let the haters play on her computer but come friday they get jacked up on whichever energy drink is currently hip and run wild.
What’s truly saddest is most of them are in their 20’s and attend the north avenue trade school. Mommy still makes all the decisions though.

Bottom line is these 2 have not played against traditional SEC linemen yet until this week (translated as Buffalo, FAU, Vandy all white and Missou not ready for primetime). We get it. You are a sad friendless little nothing that lives to run his suck all day every day on numerous blogs. You pretend to be a fan so you can hedge your bet and celebrate when Georgia wins big or say I told you so in the unlikely event that they lose. You are a gutless litlle coward that is afraid to declare for either side. You have spent your entire life in the shadows and behind your keyboard in your dirty dank hovel is the only place you feel safe.
Now trot out your tired useless argument about “I’m a fan but I don’t drink the kool aid bla blah blah” You are a big fat zero and until you beg borrow or steal a backbone that is all you will ever be. I REALLY will never begin to understand how people like you manage to drag themselves out of bed each day knowing it will be filled with despair just like the day before and every day after until you are gone remembered and missed by no one.

To all Kool-ade Drinkers…
Keep on drinking baby! Who rains on our parade? Just a bunch of sad, jealous losers who hide behind other teams. Are we the best? HELL NO! Not till we beat the best. Are we looking good compared to last year? Hell yeah! Are we afraid of any team on our schedule? I don’t think so, but most of us realize until we beat UT, SC, UF & yes Auburn, we shouldn’t get cocky or even gloat. That isn’t smart, but and this is a big but, there is no reason why we can’t already be PROUD OF OUR TEAM. They are better than the team that won 10 games last year and if they can stay focused, then the Dawgs can have a Monster year. I’m not afraid to be Proud of my Dawgs or their fans and if you don’t like our enthusiasm, then you can suckit…

Here’s what Lattimore, Gurley, and Marshall did vs a common opponent, Vandy 3 weeks apart:
Lattimore 23 carries 110 yds 4.8 ave
Gurley 16 carries 130 yds 8.1 ave
Marshall 10 carries 82 yds 8.2 ave
