Barbara Dooley on son Derek: ‘That’s my baby and I’m pulling for Tennessee’

ATHENS – Make no mistake about it. There are no split allegiances or conflicted emotions for Barbara Dooley. The longtime First Lady of Georgia Athletics will be decked head-to-toe in orange on Saturday and rooting for the Tennessee Vols.

More specifically, she’ll be pulling for her youngest son, Derek Dooley, who at this moment happens to be Vols’ head football coach, and a beleaguered one at that.

“I’ve never been conflicted about it,” said Barbara, Vince Dooley’s wife of 52 years and Derek’s mom of 44.  “That’s my baby and I’m pulling for Tennessee. If the Georgia people don’t understand that then I just don’t get it.”

At this point, most of them get it. This is, after all, now old hat for the Dooleys. Derek is in his third  season as Tennessee’s coach. So they’ve done the road trip to Knoxville and, after Saturday, will have twice endured the awkwardness of seeing their son on the opposing sideline at Sanford Stadium. They’ve developed sort of a routine for dealing with it.

Vince, the Bulldogs’ head coach and athletic director for a total of 41 years, won’t come anywhere near Sanford Stadium on Saturday. He’ll watch the game on the television in their Milledge Circle home, where he can twist and kick and cringe in private. And Barbara will dress in resplendent orange and go to the game like always. She said she’ll sit in the same UGA press box suite she has for a half-century.

“It’ll be my routine Saturday of entertaining and getting to the game,” Barbara said. “We’ve got a house full of company. I plan on eating, making people happy, then going to the game and sitting in the middle of a bunch of Georgia people. like always.”

As for her husband, she said, “I can understand how Vincent really and truly can’t go into that stadium that he worked in for so many years. It’s such a part of his life. He can’t just go sit in there. Plus, he could never have any privacy and just watch the game.”

As for her son, these are difficult times for him. The heat has been turned up in Knoxville, where he’s 14-15 overall and 3-1 this season. At issue is Derek’s record against ranked opponents. He’s 0-11 coming into the Georgia game. The Bulldogs are, of course, ranked No. 5.

“I don’t have any illusions of grandeur,” Barbara said of Saturday’s matchup. “I just hope Tennessee plays the very, very best they can play. Then we’ll see what happens.”

It’s not likely to get better for Derek if the Vols don’t start winning big games such as this Saturday. He inherited a tough situation, following the failed one-year experiment that was Lane Kiffin. But patience is not generally equated with modern-day college football.

“I think Derek went to Tennessee and the cupboard was really bare. It was bare, bare,” Barbara said. “So I think he’s done a really good job of recruiting his own players in there. But it’s just going to take time. I hope the fans realize you can’t snap your finger and do it. They look at [Nick] Saban, who had tremendous success at LSU and tremendous success at Alabama, but the cupboards were full there. They just needed somebody to point them in the right direction. This is a whole different situation and I think the Tennessee people realize it.”

Barbara also thinks the Vols have been a bit unlucky. She referred to last year’s game in which quarterback Tyler Bray broke his thumb on the helmet of Georgia linebacker Christian Robinson. She became friends with Robinson as they both rehabbed injuries in the Georgia football training room.

“I’m telling Christian Robinson right now to keep his hands and his head to himself,” she cracked. “He killed our season.”

Barbara was asked if she was concerned about her son’s job security.

“Of course I’m worried,” she said. “I was worried when Vince was coaching. Are you kidding?”

She reeled off stories of Georgia fans hanging Vince in effigy, having an airplane drop “Dump Dooley” fliers all over Athens and coming home from vacation to find a for-sale sign in the front yard.

“Come on, I’ve been there,” she said with a laugh. “I got sick from it. Literally I was a nervous wreck. But we knew it was like that when we took the job. I remember Vince saying, ‘just keep a suitcase ready because we never know when they’re going to throw us out of here.’ So I didn’t clean the house for 25 years. I kept thinking we were going to move.”

Alas, they never did. She hopes Derek can stay put as well.

Pretty funny! We better look out. TN has a chip on their shoulder because we are 5, and they aren’t ranked. They also have a lot of kids from Georgia. Some probably feel like they got the cold shoulder from Athens and have something to prove. At the very least, they want to win in front of their friends and family. TN was ahead of Florida late in the third qtr. This is a perfect setup for an upset over the Dawgs. Let’s hope we can come out strong and ready, and get stronger! Go Dawgs.

The bad thing about Derek’s situation is he may lose 6 games this year and get fired where nobody else could have done better. Then next year the next Head Coach come in and wins 10 or 12 games only because Derek did such a great job recruiting the last three years which includes 2013 class. It will be a shame if someone else gets credit for what he did.
Same thing happened at Georgia when we hired Grantham. It has taken 3 complete years for HIS recruits to make an impact.
No matter what Tennessee’s record end up this year I hope he will be given at least one more year. Next year will be the year to really judge how good Derek is as a head coach.

Go to the game wear your orange and pull for your son but you could have done it without running to the press to try and antagonize Uga fans with it. Plus you make your son look foolish by calling him your baby boy in public when he is the head of a major sec program. He is now a punch line because of you. And one more thing the dooley’s wouldn’t even have A legacy at Uga without Herschel.

Let’s say Derek survives 20 years as UT head coach. Will this subject still be discussed when they play UGA? Of course Barbara should support her son, especially after Adams back stabbed her husband. We should all remember Derek was man enough to go his own way. He played for Virginia when he could have walked on at UGA and tried to ride his dad’s coattails but he didn’t. Give him credit.

And if the Dooleys were at liberty to be honest, they’d probably admit to pulling for Auburn against Georgia every year since Vince Dooley retired from the Athletic Department. Remember the “War Eagle” Dooley gave during a radio interview in 2010? That’s their alma mater, after all. So that makes them like the rest of us.

This is a silly non-issue that somehow keeps getting raised every year.

On another note, you have to love Barbara Dooley. A pretty, funny, outspoken Lebanese-American with one of the deepest southern accents you’ll ever hear. They don’t make many like her.

Adams never backstabbed Dooley…Dooley played the Favre card…”I’m gonna retire..no I’m coming back”…holding Adams, the AD, and University hostage one too many times. Bottom line…IMO Dooley’s ego and selfishness hurt the University during those last years as AD (look at the head coaches throughout the ADept and the lack of changes that needed to be made). It was only after they held him to his retirement that VD showed his true political savvy style and hurt UGA in many ways – dividing the University. Is that a true UGA man? Not once did he as AD walk up through the crowd back to the press box until AFTER he wanted the crowd (literally and figuratively) against Dr. Adams. I’ll never forget the day Dooley held up a picture a kid colored and asked for Ron Jirsa to be the head basketball coach at UGA…and then actually stated during the press conference, that is what made him decide Jirsa was the right man for the job. Just sad.

Tennessee won’t fire Dooley unless they fail to make a bowl game this year. His buyout is 5 mil this year, so it wouldn’t be good business canning him at this point unless they truly lose to somebody they shouldn’t, like Troy, vandy, and Kentucky. They’d be paying 3 coaches if they fired Dooley as they’re still paying fulmer’s contract.

UGA wins 38-24. Tennessee will score a decent amount but they won’t stop UGA.

CaliDawg, couldn’t agree more. VD thought he was bigger than UGA. He signed a 6 month contract extension as AD, thinking he could get more when that expired. But when that didn’t happen, and Adams stood up to him, he showed his rear end. Very sad way to end a career.

Calidawg, I’ ll go one step further. He was an absolutely horrible athletic director. The decision to hire ray freakin goff and sticking with him way past the time he should have been let go. Then he goes out and tries to hire Glenn mason who was a mediocre coached at Minnesota and then Kansas to come south and coach a major sec program. Really Vince? Then after getting burned by mason and Uga being humiliated he has to make a last minute hire of Donnan to save face. And while I don’t particularly care for Adams he played a big role in landing richt regardless of what the revisionist historians say. Like I said he wouldn’t have much of a legacy at Uga without Herschel. Personally, I think the dooley’s are bitter at Uga and probably pull against the school every week.

Anyone with a brain that has truly loved and followed UGA football knows Michael Adams was and is a total jerk. His determination to not recognize Vince Dooley is pathetically small and petty and just a result of having a huge ego for no apparent reason.

Vince Dooley has every right to have an ego for what he accomplished over many years, not just limited to when Herschel was there.

Dooley had more SEC success than any coach in his time, other than Bear, and beat UF and Tech like a drum and sent UGA all over the country to major bowls.

And everybody knows Barb’s gonna pull for her son, but why say it? She coulda laughed it off from now – til “her baby” gets fired next year, and nobody would care.

If I were her, I would pull for my kid also, but nobody could have got me to admit it – thereby spitting in the face of the program that made me rich – the very program that provided me a free house that I still live in.

I bet Vince will wish he had stuffed a sock in her mouth when he reads this article . . .

Couple more –
Florida-Take away Wuerffel and Spurrer does nothing
Alabama- Take away Mak Ingram and Saban does nothing

Truth is, there’s a Heisman winner or top 3 in the vote, to go along with nearly every Title.

I said “nearly,” cause Saban didn’t need one last year.

Ckgator,

Programs provide the resources and culture for success, coaches realize it. It’s laughable that you include Florida with LSU and Bama if you want to talk about history and bang on Dooley.

Florida had a pretty good 20 year run but outside of that they were above average at best. They had zero SEC Championships before Spurrier and only won them under Meyer because of Tebow and Leak. Florida is 5th in SEC Championships behind Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and LSU (in that order). Like I said before, Spurrier is legit and the best coach Florida ever had. He would have won 4 BCS Championships in a row with the talent Meyer had. That man knows how to create some offense. Heck, he has South Carolina playing at a respectable level. So yeah, I’ll give Florida 1990 – 2010 but the glory days are over for the Gators. You guys are back to where you belong and that’s just pretty good.

If you want to look at all-time wins, the same order applies with the top 4 but add Auburn, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and even Georgia Tech before you get to Florida.

How about all-time win percentage? Florida .630, UGA .645, LSU .647, Tennessee .687, and Bama .710.

Yeah, Florida is elite alright…

“Show me another impressive Dooley stretch other than the Hershel years and I’ll listen”
*******************************************
That’s my point, ckgator. He didn’t have “stretches,” but had many great teams in his career. Even the year AFTER Herschel left, we lost by 6 points to Auburn, before beating #2 Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Plus:

‘66) 10-1 and SEC Champs
‘68) 8-0-2 and SEC Champs
‘71) 11-1 and late season to Pat Sullivan’s Auburn kept UGA out of National Title game
‘76) 10-1 and SEC Champs, and played Tony Dorsett’s Pitt for National Title

6 SEC titles, 1 Undesputed National Title, lost another National Title by 3 points to Penn State, 3 unbeaten regular seasons, numerous Top 5 and Top 25 final rankings.

Barbara: I’m an 83 grad from UGA. I think your son is a class act. I despise Kiffin for leaving a great SEC program. I hurt for the Razorbacks this year. I have stayed behind Richt through all the bad times. He’s the right man for the job. Your son is the right man for that job. I wish him the best of success (just not against the Dawgs). I really wouldn’t mind your husband attending the game in Sanford stadium in orange. It’s what we do down here–it’s about family. Please tell Vince to get over it. I have and would give you and him both a hug whether he was wearing orange or Red.

Barbara Dooley and her loud mouth has always been an embarrasment to her husband and to the University. She needs to remember that it was the University of Georgia, not Tennessee that gave Vince his first head coaching job at a major University and at a very young age.

This same University kept him employed his entire career when many other coaches, especially those of today, would have been fired any number of times for many of the mediocre teams he coached. This same University eventually made him the A.D. of this major University and kept him employed for 41 years before a final encounter with Dr. Adams (who nobody likes anyway).

By this time Vince was well beyond the age where most men retired anyway. This same University paid them well, enabled them to buy a beautiful home, give parties and allowed ‘ol Big Mouth to be the toast of the Athens socialites. This same University provided the income to raise her family, educate them and live a happy, financially liquid and a socially productive life.

Now, she embarrases one more time by waiving the flag (the orange one), in the UGA suite. Time to lose this one, Vince. Yea, I’m a parent too and I love my child. But Barbara could support Derek without making the usual fool of herself. For the record, I like Derek too, and I hope he is successful. But not against UGA. I’ll be at the game, but not in her suite (thank goodness), but I will have on red and black.

To those Dog fans that want to give Barbara a hard time for supporting her son, I would just say that your love for the school you root for has reached a level of ridiculousness. Of course the Dooley’s are going to support their son, and all of you would do the same. Football is a game…I know it’s exciting, and can be a big part of all of our lives in the Fall. Uga fans expect her to pull for her son but she doesn’t have to run to the press every year and make a big ordeal out of it. I respect Vince for staying home and not putting himself in that situation. Does this big supporter of her son and ut football attend all the home games in Knoxville? I seriously doubt it. Me thinks this lady is looking for attention. And read the last paragraph were she was quoted, does that sound like a lady who appreciates what this university did for her family? She sounds bitter to me.

Huh?

September 27th, 2012

layinlow…Barabara did go to the press…they came to her and asked her. I think it’s great that she isn’t running from it, and is proud of her kid.

Charles

September 27th, 2012
10:26 pm

Huh – you obvioulsy don’t understand the meaning of the word ‘fact’. The fact is that Patterson was paid. To your point, or complete lack thereof, how would I provide you ‘proof’ right here? You really think every kid paid by UT over the years has been uncovered by the media? What ‘facts’ would you like me to present you with? Believe me, there are even many UT fans who would admit what happened with Patterson, and they don’t care. It’s common knowledge.

And a point on your comment about her in the press…she heard some guys on 960 last year talking about the UGA/UT game and literally drove to the station and busted into the booth…she’s a joke and all of Athens knows it. And, by the way, there’s proof on that one…go listen for yourself.

Huh?

September 27th, 2012

Charles…I know all about what Barbara did on 960. I also know what she did (or didn’t do) concerning the press this time around about the upcoming game with UGA and how she responded when the press ASKED HER about her son.

I know what the word fact means…I also know what proof means. Just because you claim it to be a fact doesn’t make it so. It’s the first I have heard of it. Give me a link to the story where it was reported. Point me to an ESPN/Fox Sports/etc. audio clip. Give me ANYTHING other than you speaking it. As a matter of fact, give me a link to where any UT player has been paid.

September 27th, 2012
10:38 pm

Charles…I don’t know of a single Southern mom with her weight would issue a “no comment” regarding supporting her son as a head coach at an SEC school.

So Charles, regarding the Patterson deal, it sound like you and some of your UGA brethren have sour grapes regarding Patterson, and it’s turned into a “UT paid him” story. It’s sad. Believe it or not, players might just actually choose to go to school somewhere other than might “Georgia.” Until you can come up with something other than “radio silence” and “others know it,” you might want to stop. It makes you sound childish.

Charles

Huh – why a southern mom? It could be any mom…and how often do we read comments from coach’s mothers? Oh, that’s right…it’s basically never…because most folks don’t crave the spotlight. You don’t see Vince commenting…they’d kill to have his comments. He’s a southern daddy, right? Your comment is stupid and without logic.

And that story on Cord isn’t created. It’s true. Childish as it may sound…here in adult-world, a lot of cheating takes place in our league. UGA isn’t immune, just not to the level of some of our rivals. This was a particularly blatant case.

Charles

UGA is blessed to have Jarvis but he definitely didn’t get paid…Gurley didn’t either – great kid. We do have a few that got handshakes, thought. Cord Patterson got seriously paid, which is different. And his juco coach got a job. Some things are on a different level.

Charles…you are wrong…Gurley and Jones got paid. Dude, you don’t know that? Everybody does. I mean, I can’t prove it, nor do I have anything to go on other than what I am saying…but it’s a FACT.

On the Southern mom thing…it’s an expression Charles. Like “no self respecting Southerner…..” kind of thing. The point is, Barbara didn’t go to the press. About this time every year, they go to her because of the history. She has said the same thing every time. Which most moms (goegraphically agnostic of course) would. You guys expert her to say “no comment” for what? To save the feelings of some out of touch UGA fans? Good grief. Again, UGA isn’t the only school in the world. If a mom can’t be proud of her son and support him, then something is wrong with football…and the world.

Good grief. It’s her kid dude…It doesn’t matter that Vince coached at UGA. I promise you that Archie Manning pulled for his son when TN played Ole Miss…and I remember him saying as much to the media. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your children…and supporting them. As WDE said, Barbara gave UGA a lot…for many years. So now she wants to pull for her son? Get over it already.

Charles

September 27th, 2012
11:05 pm

I’m over it brother. Been over Babs for ages, as have been most folks around Athens. But your little spiel about ’supporting your kid’ doesn’t hold water here. Barbara has gone out of her way, in a very public manner, to attract attention on this. She busted into a booth in Athens totally unannounced and made a fool of herself. If she had a grain of class, she’d follow her husband’s lead…that’s how an adult acts in these situations.

Charles

September 27th, 2012
11:07 pm

And for the record, huh, to your last point. I agree with Archie and Vince, if he does indeed pull for his kid. What I don’t agree with is Babs’ amateur hour, one-too-many martinis approach. If you do, you’re lost.

Sorry but you will have to forgive me if I’m not buying the Barbra Dooley BS. I wonder if Benedict Arnold’s mother was rooting for him when he decided to change uniforms. How can a person be a fan of a team for god only knows how many years and all of a sudden root for another team, especially a conference team. I can understand her being a fan or Tennessee every game except for the one game she should be a Bulldog fan. It only tells me one thing about her. She was never a god to honest Georgia Bulldog fan I don’t care how many games she attended or how much time she donated to the university. She was a Vince Dooley fan and that was all. She was only doing her husbands bidding. If I had a son that was the head coach of Tennessee and I had 5 other son’s that was also playing for Tennessee. Sorry my sons. Kill Em dawgs. Anyone who doesn’t understand Barbara (and Vince’s) position on this doesn’t have children. When it’s your kid, loyalty to a school, team or anything else goes out the window. I appreciate the way the Dooley’s are handling this… Vince Dooley is a legend in Athens and always will be… pulling for his son to succeed doesn’t change that at all… Now, with that said; Derek ain’t my son, BEAT TENNESSEE!!

Even before Derek came to UT I was a big fan of Vince and Barbara. Classy people and the accents remind me of great Aunts and Uncles who lived in Alabama when I was a kid. I could listen to them talk for hours. Funny, classy people that unfortunately are part of a generation that the clock is ticking on. You tell’em Ms. Dooley.

I see Tennessee as a 7-5 Chick-fila Bowl team this year. With a little luck they are 8-4 and maybe creep into the Capitol One Bowl.

That is a big improvement from where UT was after the Fulmer / Kiffen debacle.

I don’t mind Barabra supporting her son, but don’t you think Derek could get her a seat for this game. She should have enough class not to sit in the seats that UGA supplied. I was in the same positiion with my son and I like Vince stayed at home.

Any loving mom would pull for her son–and of course she’s not a real bonafide UT fan. If they fire Derek, she’ll hate UT more than anyone on the planet. Same ole story, and I knew we’d “hear” this every year as long as Derek is at UT and his mama is alive. No biggie to me.

That said, there is nothing “resplendent” about orange, Chip. ;)

This was a story the first time UT visited Athens with Derek Dooley as their head coach. It’s really old news now and I hope this is the last year we have to endure another rehashed article about what Barbara Dooley is wearing to the UGA/UT game and where she will sit and where Vince will be.

I like Dooley. I like his press conferences. I don’t have a lot of love for UT… but whatever. That said, Dooley has been there 3 years. That’s long enough to fill the cubard back up. If I’m a UT fan, I’m wanting another man for the job.

Derek is a good coach and I don’t blame Babs one iota for cheering on her boy. However, in doing so, she does relinquish the “UGA first lady” moniker. No one that ever cheers for the opposition against UGA she be allowed such a title.

That said, am I sick or is Babs kind’a hot?

I have no problem with Mrs. Dooley supporting her son and wearing orange. However, If Derik ever parts ways with Tennessee then Mrs. Dooley should never come back and wear red and black again. Once you leave there is no going home so to speak..

Please, enough of the annual articles on Barbara and Vince Dooley as the Georgia-Tennessee game approaches. A column on Derek Dooley’s job status at Tennesee that included talking with some UT people and looking objectively at his body of work would be much more interesting.

I don’t blame Barbara for supporting her son’s team, I also agree with some earlier posters that said, Derrick’s record at UT isn’t indicative of the job that he has done at UT, he was left some very bare cupboards and has done a GREAT job getting some talent to Rockytop. I still hope that they will give him a chance to show what he can do with his players. However, he LOSES this weekend. Go Dawgs and GATA!

After watching fla.beat up the VOLS in second half,I hope they realize it is a war, no holds barred, fight and play accordingly. If they do sorry about UGAs luck. GO VOLS

Vince Dooley was my football coach when he was quarterback at University of McGill High School in Mobile in 1950. We were a Mobile “all star team” selected from the Catholic school teams to play a like team from Chicago in Birmingham on Christmas. The game was called the Toy Bowl. Vince’s team won 27 to 13 in a freezing rain. Boy what I would give to be able to do that again.

This Dawg fan doesn’t blame either of them one bit. Family first. I like that Barbara has made the situation kind of fun, and i also love her devotion to it, by continuing to watch with UGA fans and endure whatever may come along with it. Would we feel the same about Vince? He may have his own reasons but outwardly, how much more respectful could he be? Love them both.
