Notebook: Malcolm Mitchell eager to learn what role he’ll play

GEORGIA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

ATHENS – Malcolm Mitchell said he has no idea what he’s going to do on Saturday or how much of it.

“Maybe they’ll let me know at 3:29 on Saturday,” joked Mitchell, referring to No. 5 Georgia’s 3:30 p.m. kickoff against Tennessee at Sanford Stadium.

As of Wednesday, Mitchell was listed as the starter at boundary cornerback, where he has played the last three games and practiced on Wednesday. But Mitchell spent the whole day Tuesday — meetings and practice time — with Georgia’s wide receiver corps.

“I don’t know. I don’t have a clue, honestly,” said Mitchell, who has played a handful of snaps at wide receiver the past two games. “It was defense [Wednesday]. But you just never know what the game plan is or what they’re scheming up until game day or the day before. So right now I’m just playing it out to see what happens.”

Adding to the mystery is the return of Georgia’s last two suspended starters on defense. Linebacker Alec Ogletree and free safety Bacarri Rambo are both expected back from four-game suspensions. That means Sanders Commings, who has filled in at free safety the past two weeks, is clear to return to boundary corner, where he started 13 of the Bulldogs’ 14 games last season.

But Georgia coach Mark Richt, as he has been from the beginning, remained vague about whom might play what.

“I don’t want to tell everybody what we’re going to do,” Richt said Wednesday. “But both those guys will play.”

Mitchell was one of Georgia’s most explosive receivers as a freshman last season with 665 yards and 4 touchdowns in just 11 games. In fact, he had a game-high 126 yards on three catches against the Vols last year. But rolling him back into the wideout rotation is a delicate matter as the Bulldogs have played well there and have demonstrated a strong rapport with quarterback Aaron Murray.

“We have to be sure we stay in synch,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said.

Meanwhile, the Vols are bringing to Sanford Stadium the SEC’s most prolific passing game. Led by 6-foot-6 quarterback Tyler Bray and tall and speedy wide receivers Justin Hunter and Codarrelle Patterson, Tennessee is averaging 38.2 points a game and has passed for more than 1,300 yards passing with 12 touchdowns.

“We’re going to have to disrupt routes, play man coverage some, do some different things to mix it up because we don’t want to be predictable,” Richt said. “You have to decide how to play it because certain teams may play super deep and allow underneath stuff and go tackle while others may pressure more up front.”

Bobo has said the amount of offense Mitchell plays will be determined by how well he picks up the offense again. Mitchell insists that won’t be a problem.

“It’s a lot but it hasn’t gone anywhere,” Mitchell said of his knowledge of the offensive playbook. “I was doing it every day for a year, so it’s still in my head. I was surprised myself by how much I could contain in my head.”

Abry Jones looks like a go

Defensive end Abry Jones, who missed the first two practices this week with a sprained ankle, returned Wednesday and appeared to work out without limitations. The senior from Warner Robins has started 18 games in a row and 24 overall.

Jones had to be helped off the field against Vanderbilt with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

“It’s good,” Richt said of Jones’ quick turnaround. “Abry has been a very steady, reliable, consistent performer and he’s gotten consistently better as well. He’s a leader for us and has been named a captain on more than one occasion. He certainly helped us in the offseason as much as anybody.”

Tightening up special teams

Georgia is looking to tighten up its play on special teams.

  • The Bulldogs have failed on two extra points — on miss and one botched snap — and place-kicker Marshall Morgan has had three others deflect through off the uprights.
  • Georgia is last in the SEC in net punting at 33.3 yards.
  • And the Dogs have struggled to field punt returns, though they’ve been relatively good at returning them once they catch them.

Richt is looking for improvement in all areas, particularly with point-after kicks.

“You would think we could get it a little closer to the center post,” Richt said. “I’m smiling now but it could cost us. I’m trying to be patient. It’s not a good thing to have that much drama on extra points.”

Morgan said he’s been working hard to correct it this week and believes he has.

“I need to fix it,” said Morgan, who has had three makes off the left upright. We’ve worked on it a lot this week and I’ve had two perfect days. We’ve looked solid.”

As for punt returns, Mitchell remains the Bulldogs’ primary returner, but Richt said considering giving the job to Rhett McGowan if fielding issues don’t improve.

“Overall we’ve had too many bad decisions and bad communication,” he said. “It may end up being Rhett if he communicates the best and secures the ball the best and fields the ball the best. We’re trying to find an answer there.”

There’s a surprise… our weakness is special teams! I love Coach Richt and what he’s brought back to our football team, but, man, it just seems like every year we’re lacking in this area. At least the coverage teams have looked a little better. I’m “old school” though and was always tought there are THREE phases to the game that determine the outcome. Offense, defense AND special teams- they’re ALL important!!
Team overall is certainly looking good, though. I’ve just today gotten my voice back fully from hollering at the Vandy game Sat. Closest thing to a complete game since last year’s Auburn butt kicking. Keep it up boys!! Goooooo Dawgs!! GATA!!!!

Very interesting span of talent. We should be fine Saturday, particularly if the defense give Bray no time. Jarvis Time.

Huh?

10:42 pm

Frank…TN is not great at run-blocking, but they are quite good at pass protection. Trust me, I’m sure that UGA will be able to get some pressure on Bray. I’m also equally sure that Bray is still going to get his yards, and that Hunter and Patterson will get their catches. I wouldn’t expect Jones to be in the backfield all game long…TN is no Missouri or Vandy.

Huh according to you we should be 2-2 with! Jarvis will be a beast in this game whether making the sack or causing the very good and disciplined Vols to double and allow Jordan or Alec to make the sack!!!!!!! The lack of running game allows either Alec or Christian to rush more !

Defense is key Saturday. We need a better rush up the middle. Jenkins and Kwame bottle up the middle but I rarely see them in the backfield. Vanderbilt was an exception a couple of times.

By my count, that makes six very dangerous wide receivers on the UGA squad with big play capabilities. I hope we spread it out and slip a tight end right down the middle just once this game… I just love to see a big Georgia TE get 20 yds over the middle. This is a special team! So many weapons it’s hard to find space to play them all. That’s what the coaches are saying. Finally we are getting deep like bama and LSU and how Florida always was.

Our position players are very strong, as strong as I can remember. The key is the line. If they protect Murray, and we don’t have turnovers, UGA is probably going to score a whole lot of points. Our D will be interesting to watch. Will they pick up where they left off, or will they need some tuning? I suspect they will be strong. TN has a very explosive team, and pass D is the one question mark for our D, so this could be a very tough game. My keys are turnovers, our O line, and whether we can pressure Bray. Go Dawgs!

That was a great story on Jones. Sounds like a fine young man who has already overcome a lot of adversity! One interesting thing about team sports–great players lift the performance of others in addition to making their own contributions. Jones is that kind of leader to the D, but I would say Tree is also that kind of leader, and maybe more. He has done well on the field, but he has yet to really command a lot of media coverage. I notice how many comments he gets from his fellow players. I think our whole D played much stronger after he returned in ‘11, and Jones got most of his sacks last year after Ogeltree returned. It could have been that he was just getting better, but I think Ogeltree presents problems for opposing OCs, that help JJ make more great plays. It will be interesting to see how they both do now that JJ is commanding so much attention.

Call me crazy but I think the success you are seeing with the offense this year is that Murray has been green lighted to check out of a Bobo called play based on what he see’s with HIS experience at the moment vs some dumb chart Bobo uses based on Down and distance and field position vs what the opposing D is actually showing BEFORE the snap. I think the big difference this year is Murray protecting the ball – and I think Richt/Bobo are attacking, at least so far this season.

Murray is showing off that arm when he has the time to get it off.

INsider You said the punt coverage team was the issue. Specificaly because you said the missing scholarship players at the bottom end would be the problem. Don’t be pretending you ever worried about a couple of extra point clunking the uprights. Or that our highly rated and scholarshiped punt returner would muff a couple early.

IF you are going to claim mentioning “special teams” as a generic term counts despite the specifics of what you said not even being close, then sure, spot on.

BTW, everybody knew that freshman kickers and needing to get some better players on the field team was going to be a concern? So we are all insiders.

And besides that, WHY do you feel the need to demand attention for yourself THREE times now on this? You echoed a concern, (that the entire internet was buzzing about all summer). Get over yourself.

Joey

September 27th, 2012

That very well could be it, JB. Richt’s best seasons were when he had a QB who audibled a lot. I remember a reporter asking Richt after a game in ‘02, about how many times Greene changed the play at the line, and Richt said, “as long as he makes the right call, he can change it all he wants.”

I can’t remember if Shockley audibled much, but Stafford did – all the time, with a lot of success.

Once the coaches are comfortable with the QB’s ability to get them into the right play based on his reads, they give them that option. It only makes sense. Murray has shown this ability and thus has the control.

One issue with young QBs is they misread the defense and get fooled. But having the play called from the coaches without a chance to adjust for the reads means the team is often playing into the teeth of the defense. My hope is that our backups are getting their mental reps watching Murray run the offense. Their times will come and its important they mature as well.

As for Mitchell, he’s playing a game. There may not be a script but he knows what he’s practicing. Adjustments will be made for injury and situation but he’s too valuable to sit. No matter how dumb you believe Richt and company are as coaches, that isn’t going to happen. This is all about playing games with Tenn. as they prepare.

The next progression in Murray’s development I’m looking for is passing to a secondary wr downfield. Granted, pass protection is key for such, but there’s been many times where’s he’s gotten happy feet and either thrown a “hot” pass to the rb or tucked it and ran.

It’s not like we need Mitchell on offense. I mean we seem to be doing pretty good with him in the secondary on D. I wouldn’t fix it if it ain’t broke. NFL loves great DBs. Leave him there and play Justin Scott-Wesley more. Plus throw to Jay Rome more out of two TE sets…

Mitchell is the most explosive receiver we have. Put in #26 in a 4 WR set with Marlon, T King, and Bennett and pick your poison.

UT has given up a bunch of big plays. Once the run is established, UGA is all big play. Let them line up in man coverage against Mitchell and see what happens.

No, I am being honest when I say I don’t think Murray will ever be an NFL QB. He might get drafted and be a third stringer for a few years but that is probably the best he can hope for.

His height is an issue, his decision making is an issue, he is sketchy under pressure, and he hasn’t performed all that well in big games. Can you really imagine Murray doing well in the NFL when he has guys like Clay Matthews trying to kill him every play?

@ GTBob- – I believe AM will be a 5th maybe 4th round pick and piddle around in the NFL. But make no mistake, AM will leave UGA as one of the best ever. He will own every record. But most important, he is winning and he is winning big. UGA is lucky to have this guy! GO DAWGS!!!

Murray and Bree’s are about the same size…although Drew has a lot better arm….but Murray’s arm is miles ahead of the last year or two……And Murray will get drafted in the 5 th or 6th round as a “flyer” or hidden gem” for some team. He tough. He’ll have to play this year and next with taking care of the football. That part of his game has killed him the last two years. So far so good this year.

GTBob – Murray may be smart enough not to want to have to prove himself in the NFL. He doesn’t have the physical tools to be a top tier guy. I will grant you that. I hope he continues his masters study and plays one more year. Defense loses a ton but if Murray comes back we should be pretty good on offense.

Mitchell – whatever stock he is losing by going back in forth I think he is getting back by being a team player. NFL loves character guys. Too much money to invest in “me” guys. I know that you think that Samuel got the shaft from Richt but he is not a top tier college back or linebacker. Samuel will always be a UGA hero simply because of his heart and his head.

I actually agree with GTBob on Murray. Don’t see Murray in the pro’s but I do love him right now playing for UGA. Bob seems a little more humble after GT’s loss last week.
What I don’t understand is where is Branden Smith on kickoff returns or punt returns? There was even an article on the AJC a few months ago about him being excited to return one all the way. Has he been passed over because we have better players or because of the lack of depth on D for the first four games and we couldn’t risk him getting injured?

Saw this, thought I would share….

Count Vanderbilt coach James Franklin as a believer in No. 5-ranked Georgia.

The Bulldogs hammered the Commodores 48-3 last week, and Franklin said Wednesday it was hard not to be impressed with Georgia’s mix of firepower and muscle.

“They’re probably one of the most balanced teams we have played here in the last two years,” Franklin said. “They can run for power. They can throw with timing and precision. They make big plays, but just the way they’re able to come off the ball with the size of that offensive line and the size of those running backs, and the same thing with the tight end position … they’re going to be a pretty good challenge for people.

“I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years now, and I thought that was as impressive of an offense as I’ve seen in terms of a veteran quarterback, physical offensive line, physical running backs and speed on the perimeter as well as size.”

The Bulldogs have scored at least 40 points in all four of their games this season, and the freshman running back duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall has added another dimension to that offense.

Franklin said the guy who stood out to him was Gurley, who’s rushed for 406 yards and is averaging 9.2 yards per carry.

“Just how powerful he is and how big his legs are,” Franklin said. “They list him at 220. I’d be surprised if he’s 220. I think he’s 230. He’s a big, strong, physical downhill runner, and again, he’s playing with a lot of confidence right now and playing behind a pretty good offensive line.”

Yea….He knows where he’ll be playing. lol I just hope the Dawgs come out fast and stay on the Gas. I think UT will move the ball and will score some points…but not many. With the Dawgs D line I don’t think they will be able to get much as far as a running game. I think you’ll see UT falling behind greatly in the 3rd and the Dawgs pulling away by 3 scores in the 4th. It all depends on the Defense if CTG has them ready to play..which I think will be the case, then I think UT will score maybe13. I think we’ll see UGA 42 UT 13.. The only scores I think that coulc make this closer would be turnovers. GATA!!!

Wow, RiffRaff, I had been wondering what Franklin thought about our team. You know he hated to give a compliment to UGA, but it’s good to hear that he did.

Saturday notwithstanding, it’s hard not to admire what Coach Franklin has done in his short time there, in probably the toughest job in the country – coaching Vandy to compete in SEC football.

That is a funny thought, gdawginkalamazoo.

Another funny thought on this situation is picturing Grantham having hold of one sleeve of Mitchell’s jersey during the game, and Bobo pulling on the other sleeve.

Richt has even made a joke of the “lobbying” going on by his 2 coordinators on behalf of Mitchell.

I was surprised as anyone to hear Franklin go on and on about this team. He was pretty blunt about it.

Watch Malcolm play more and more on the offensive side the next few weeks. He is the main deep threat.

I think we are loaded with deep threats at WR. Brown, King, Bennett just off the top of my head. Our entire roster at WR is quality. Adding Mitchell back on there is just a huge bonus. 4 WR set would be fun to watch.

I agree with everyone though, we need come out strong and keep it up for 60 minutes. This is by far the best offense we have seen to date. Bray will be throwing a ton of short passes to pick up the first downs. Probably try a few down field to keep our DB’s honest. Scary but I can’t wait to watch.
