GEORGIA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
ATHENS – Malcolm Mitchell said he has no idea what he’s going to do on Saturday or how much of it.
“Maybe they’ll let me know at 3:29 on Saturday,” joked Mitchell, referring to No. 5 Georgia’s 3:30 p.m. kickoff against Tennessee at Sanford Stadium.
As of Wednesday, Mitchell was listed as the starter at boundary cornerback, where he has played the last three games and practiced on Wednesday. But Mitchell spent the whole day Tuesday — meetings and practice time — with Georgia’s wide receiver corps.
“I don’t know. I don’t have a clue, honestly,” said Mitchell, who has played a handful of snaps at wide receiver the past two games. “It was defense [Wednesday]. But you just never know what the game plan is or what they’re scheming up until game day or the day before. So right now I’m just playing it out to see what happens.”
Adding to the mystery is the return of Georgia’s last two suspended starters on defense. Linebacker Alec Ogletree and free safety Bacarri Rambo are both expected back from four-game suspensions. That means Sanders Commings, who has filled in at free safety the past two weeks, is clear to return to boundary corner, where he started 13 of the Bulldogs’ 14 games last season.
But Georgia coach Mark Richt, as he has been from the beginning, remained vague about whom might play what.
“I don’t want to tell everybody what we’re going to do,” Richt said Wednesday. “But both those guys will play.”
Mitchell was one of Georgia’s most explosive receivers as a freshman last season with 665 yards and 4 touchdowns in just 11 games. In fact, he had a game-high 126 yards on three catches against the Vols last year. But rolling him back into the wideout rotation is a delicate matter as the Bulldogs have played well there and have demonstrated a strong rapport with quarterback Aaron Murray.
“We have to be sure we stay in synch,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said.
Meanwhile, the Vols are bringing to Sanford Stadium the SEC’s most prolific passing game. Led by 6-foot-6 quarterback Tyler Bray and tall and speedy wide receivers Justin Hunter and Codarrelle Patterson, Tennessee is averaging 38.2 points a game and has passed for more than 1,300 yards passing with 12 touchdowns.
“We’re going to have to disrupt routes, play man coverage some, do some different things to mix it up because we don’t want to be predictable,” Richt said. “You have to decide how to play it because certain teams may play super deep and allow underneath stuff and go tackle while others may pressure more up front.”
Bobo has said the amount of offense Mitchell plays will be determined by how well he picks up the offense again. Mitchell insists that won’t be a problem.
“It’s a lot but it hasn’t gone anywhere,” Mitchell said of his knowledge of the offensive playbook. “I was doing it every day for a year, so it’s still in my head. I was surprised myself by how much I could contain in my head.”
Abry Jones looks like a go
Defensive end Abry Jones, who missed the first two practices this week with a sprained ankle, returned Wednesday and appeared to work out without limitations. The senior from Warner Robins has started 18 games in a row and 24 overall.
Jones had to be helped off the field against Vanderbilt with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
“It’s good,” Richt said of Jones’ quick turnaround. “Abry has been a very steady, reliable, consistent performer and he’s gotten consistently better as well. He’s a leader for us and has been named a captain on more than one occasion. He certainly helped us in the offseason as much as anybody.”
Tightening up special teams
Georgia is looking to tighten up its play on special teams.
Richt is looking for improvement in all areas, particularly with point-after kicks.
“You would think we could get it a little closer to the center post,” Richt said. “I’m smiling now but it could cost us. I’m trying to be patient. It’s not a good thing to have that much drama on extra points.”
Morgan said he’s been working hard to correct it this week and believes he has.
“I need to fix it,” said Morgan, who has had three makes off the left upright. We’ve worked on it a lot this week and I’ve had two perfect days. We’ve looked solid.”
As for punt returns, Mitchell remains the Bulldogs’ primary returner, but Richt said considering giving the job to Rhett McGowan if fielding issues don’t improve.
“Overall we’ve had too many bad decisions and bad communication,” he said. “It may end up being Rhett if he communicates the best and secures the ball the best and fields the ball the best. We’re trying to find an answer there.”

Murray may have a short NFL career but he seems like he would make a great coach and a really great OC.

His height is an issue, his decision making is an issue, he is sketchy under pressure, and he hasn’t performed all that well in big games. Can you really imagine Murray doing well in the NFL when he has guys like Clay Matthews trying to kill him every play?

@ GTBob- – I believe AM will be a 5th maybe 4th round pick and piddle around in the NFL. But make no mistake, AM will leave UGA as one of the best ever. He will own every record. But most important, he is winning and he is winning big. UGA is lucky to have this guy! GO DAWGS!!!

Murray and Bree’s are about the same size…although Drew has a lot better arm….but Murray’s arm is miles ahead of the last year or two……And Murray will get drafted in the 5 th or 6th round as a “flyer” or hidden gem” for some team. He tough. He’ll have to play this year and next with taking care of the football. That part of his game has killed him the last two years. So far so good this year.

Here we go….lets see how this team responds after a big game….bottom line folks- we did what we should do anytime we play Vandy…….lets see if they take it up a notch or let UT come in as they have before and upset us…….time will tell if we have learned………my guess if we finally play back to back great games and dont get all giddy that we beat Vandy……..Dawgs: 38 UT 10

GTBob – Murray may be smart enough not to want to have to prove himself in the NFL. He doesn’t have the physical tools to be a top tier guy. I will grant you that. I hope he continues his masters study and plays one more year. Defense loses a ton but if Murray comes back we should be pretty good on offense.
Mitchell – whatever stock he is losing by going back in forth I think he is getting back by being a team player. NFL loves character guys. Too much money to invest in “me” guys. I know that you think that Samuel got the shaft from Richt but he is not a top tier college back or linebacker. Samuel will always be a UGA hero simply because of his heart and his head.

I actually agree with GTBob on Murray. Don’t see Murray in the pro’s but I do love him right now playing for UGA. Bob seems a little more humble after GT’s loss last week.
What I don’t understand is where is Branden Smith on kickoff returns or punt returns? There was even an article on the AJC a few months ago about him being excited to return one all the way. Has he been passed over because we have better players or because of the lack of depth on D for the first four games and we couldn’t risk him getting injured?

Saw this, thought I would share….
Count Vanderbilt coach James Franklin as a believer in No. 5-ranked Georgia.
The Bulldogs hammered the Commodores 48-3 last week, and Franklin said Wednesday it was hard not to be impressed with Georgia’s mix of firepower and muscle.
“They’re probably one of the most balanced teams we have played here in the last two years,” Franklin said. “They can run for power. They can throw with timing and precision. They make big plays, but just the way they’re able to come off the ball with the size of that offensive line and the size of those running backs, and the same thing with the tight end position … they’re going to be a pretty good challenge for people.
“I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years now, and I thought that was as impressive of an offense as I’ve seen in terms of a veteran quarterback, physical offensive line, physical running backs and speed on the perimeter as well as size.”
The Bulldogs have scored at least 40 points in all four of their games this season, and the freshman running back duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall has added another dimension to that offense.
Franklin said the guy who stood out to him was Gurley, who’s rushed for 406 yards and is averaging 9.2 yards per carry.
“Just how powerful he is and how big his legs are,” Franklin said. “They list him at 220. I’d be surprised if he’s 220. I think he’s 230. He’s a big, strong, physical downhill runner, and again, he’s playing with a lot of confidence right now and playing behind a pretty good offensive line.”

Yea….He knows where he’ll be playing. lol I just hope the Dawgs come out fast and stay on the Gas. I think UT will move the ball and will score some points…but not many. With the Dawgs D line I don’t think they will be able to get much as far as a running game. I think you’ll see UT falling behind greatly in the 3rd and the Dawgs pulling away by 3 scores in the 4th. It all depends on the Defense if CTG has them ready to play..which I think will be the case, then I think UT will score maybe13. I think we’ll see UGA 42 UT 13.. The only scores I think that coulc make this closer would be turnovers. GATA!!!

Wow, RiffRaff, I had been wondering what Franklin thought about our team. You know he hated to give a compliment to UGA, but it’s good to hear that he did.
Saturday notwithstanding, it’s hard not to admire what Coach Franklin has done in his short time there, in probably the toughest job in the country – coaching Vandy to compete in SEC football.

That is a funny thought, gdawginkalamazoo.
Another funny thought on this situation is picturing Grantham having hold of one sleeve of Mitchell’s jersey during the game, and Bobo pulling on the other sleeve.
Richt has even made a joke of the “lobbying” going on by his 2 coordinators on behalf of Mitchell.

I was surprised as anyone to hear Franklin go on and on about this team. He was pretty blunt about it.
Watch Malcolm play more and more on the offensive side the next few weeks. He is the main deep threat.

If by that you mean to covet thy neighbors (fill in the blank), yes, true. That is a sin. Yea, so? How does that apply here?
BTW, where woud you rank pure outright conceit in your list of sins?

I think we are loaded with deep threats at WR. Brown, King, Bennett just off the top of my head. Our entire roster at WR is quality. Adding Mitchell back on there is just a huge bonus. 4 WR set would be fun to watch.
I agree with everyone though, we need come out strong and keep it up for 60 minutes. This is by far the best offense we have seen to date. Bray will be throwing a ton of short passes to pick up the first downs. Probably try a few down field to keep our DB’s honest. Scary but I can’t wait to watch.
