UGA notebook: A secondary violation involving Bobo and, of all things, tennis

By TIM TUCKER and CHIP TOWERS

ATHENS –Georgia will bench offensive coordinator Mike Bobo from off-campus recruiting for a month as a result of a secondary NCAA violation.

The violation: escorting a recruit and his mother into the NCAA Tennis Championships on the UGA campus last spring without having them pay the $8 admission fee.

UGA athletic director Greg McGarity self-reported the incident to SEC commissioner Mike Slive in a letter last week.

According to the letter, the violation occurred when an assistant coach –- not named in the letter but identified by UGA as Bobo – and a recruiting intern were touring campus with an unnamed prospect who was in town on an unoffiicial visit.

“A member of the ticket office staff reported this incident to the compliance office,” McGarity wrote. “… The family has been notified and subsequently submitted restitution in the amount of $20.”

In addition, according to the letter, Georgia will prohibit the coach – Bobo — from recruiting off campus for 30 days and will prohibit any on- or off-campus contact with the prospect for 30 days. The dates of those self-imposed penalties were not specified.

“To prevent similar violations of this nature in the future,” McGarity wrote, “the compliance staff met with the coaching staff as well as the ticket office and event management staff regarding the provisions of NCAA Bylaw 13.7.2.4 and reiterated that prospective student-athletes may not receive complimentary admission to NCAA Championships or other postseason contests.”

If the NCAA agrees that the incident constitutes a Level II violation – the lowest level — no further action is expected.

Mitchell’s role

Cornerback/wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell’s transition back to a significant offensive role continues.

“I would say his reps on offense will increase and his reps on defense will probably decrease,” coach Mark Richt said.

Mitchell performed well at receiver in practice Tuesday but was “obviously a little rusty,” Bobo said. “He hadn’t worked at receiver hardly any — maybe 15 minutes — since we opened camp. But he’s a talented kid, and we’re going to give his ability a chance to make some plays in the game.”

Dogs in the NFL

Richt began his weekly news conference by citing the recent successes of some former UGA players in the NFL. He noted that former Bulldogs accounted for 10.5 sacks this past week (“I thought that was pretty cool”), that the Bears’ Tim Jennings leads the NFL in interceptions and that the Bengals’ A.J. Green is second in the league in receiving yards.

Richt also raved about Blair Walsh, who struggled through a shaky senior season at Georgia but is 7-for-7 on field goals for the Vikings and the first rookie in NFL history to kick a 50-yarder in each of his first three games.

“So they got him straightened out,” Richt said with a smile.

Welch before LeMay

It was something of a surprise in last week’s rout of Vanderbilt that walk-on Parker Welch was the second quarterback into the game for Georgia, ahead of scholarship player Christian LeMay.

“Coach Bobo is basically allowing [them] to compete on a weekly basis to see who earns the right to get in the game first if we get into that type of situation,” Richt said. “Parker has been doing well. Parker has been in the system a little longer, and he’s very diligent in the way he prepares as well. Coach Bobo felt like he earned the right to go in first.”

Georgia won’t use Hutson Mason in a mop-up role because the plan is to redshirt him, barring a significant injury to Aaron Murray.

Injury report

Defensive end Abry Jones missed a second consecutive practice with the sprained left ankle suffered against Vanderbilt. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham indicated that Jones is expected to play Saturday against Tennessee, saying he’ll “be fine” and “knows the game plan of what we’re going to do.”

WTF — have you been impresses with Mettenberger?
He’ll, I thought Jarrett “int” Lee & Jordan Jefferson ran their offense better.

Neither Bama or LSU are as good(YET) as they were last year.
Experience counts for a lot!

Big Crimson 75 I was in the Washington game but he didn’t look to good against a weak AU defense. This is his 1st year at the helm so I think the verdict’s still out. He does have the tools. Your right about the as good (yet), but that’s what I’ve been happy about the Dawgs. We have gotten better each week. Still a long season to go.

How many games or championships has UGA had to “vacate”?

The answer would be – zero.

Guess our violations were not near as “major” as Tech’s.

Bob
I think UGA has at least one, but GT has so many, you have to have an engineering degree from GT to count them all. It’s like alot…

To be more accurate, UGA has 6 putting them near the top all time. GT has 3.

1st — you’re a douche bag.
2nd — in Ga’s case, it would be how many wins were vacated, not Championships. You sorta have to have em first.

It’s strange how he can alays dish dirt on Georgia but didnt mention that Tech’s 09 ACC championship was vacated due to NCAA violations. Was that the year that Georgia had it worse team in about ten years, managed to lose to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl yet still beat the those ACC champs?

To be fair, the whole erasing games/championships the NC2A loves to do is the dumbest course of action to take.
If a Program cheats, they should face stern probation which includes scholly reductions, tv bans, post-season bans & financial hits.
Implying that games were never played or titles never won is absolute garbage.

What a moronic comment. “Pre-Tiger, golf was a dying sport played almost exclusively by the 1%.” If only one percent of the population played golf why is there a course virtually everywhere you look? EVERYONE loves to get out and participate in the sport regardless of their ability. Think of the cost of the real estate needed to establish a course plus the numerous employees needed to tend the grounds and the clubhouse, etc. If only 1% of the population played the sport it wouldn’t be a worthwhile investment. What a stupid comment. Plus, you coat it in f-ing Obama-speak. First of all, what is wrong with people being successful. Until this f-up came along we looked up to and respected people who worked their a-holes off and sacrificed to make themselves more successful (very similar to athletes) yet now with the appeaser-in-chief in the White House, working hard and being successful is frowned upon. Go back to Zucatti Park and picket with the other losers like yourself who want handouts from the rest of us who get up every morning and go to work because we are proud of ourselves and what we do. Just because you’re a loser and the people you associate with are too doesn’t make the rest of us losers too. We are successful. You are a loser. To hell with you.

I think you are giving Tiger a little too much credit here. He certainly affects TV ratings in a huge way but I don’t think he is the reason there are 10 affordable golf courses within 20 miles of my house that always have plenty of people playing. Golf has always been a pretty popular sport to play for everyone. Tiger just made it more fun to watch on TV.

Look deeper into the statement of CMB’s suspension of offf campus recruiting…is that ruling been applied to CRG for the last years?? He rarely leaves Athens evident by local coaches stating they rarely see him on their campus!! Norcross, Buford, N Gwinnett…etc; and deeper into the statement of Blair Walsh…”they finally got him straightened out ” evident that no ST Coach effected his performance!! C’mon CMR open your eyes and understand you have to make the correct changes to win a NC!!

Stupid is as stupid does. NCAA is really stupid and petty. Pay attention to what matters. $20 bucks, seriously. I know that will make a difference to me where my child attends college. Student athletes across the nation make the colleges and NCAA hundreds of millions of dollars annually. In return, the students gets a degree in sports education that they will never put to use and a 1000 to one shot to play professional sports. Who’s being taken advantage of?

Sometimes you just gotta shake your head.

Cecil Newton gets $150,000+ but nobody gets in trouble because “Cam didn’t know anything about it.” The NCAA actually referred to this event and the subsequent rule change as the “Cecil Newton loophole.”

Bobo gets in hot water over $16.

To all the Bobo bashers:: I thought the game Sat was as good of a game plan in mixing up the plays as he has done in years. This whole season so far has been much improved on his end. Maybe he took some lessons in the off season but I think he has mixed the plays very well. If you can avg 40+ per game then you are doing something right.

champdawgs (8:42), I started believing in Bobo last season vs SC and Auburn. Dropped passes, overthrows, Pick-6s and fumbles for TDs aren’t the OC’s fault.

I think Bobo (and Richt) trust Murray more this season with protecting the ball. So far, Murray’s made a vast improvement there, and Bobo has expanded the playbook. Never thought I’d see a 4-WR set at UGA.

I hope they keep attacking offensively as we get into the bigger games.
