Aaron Murray's record-setting pace of production for Georgia has been as much the result of preparation as it has been inherent talent. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
ATHENS — Georgia’s Aaron Murray is the proverbial big man on campus. Coeds fawn when he walks past the bus stop. TV broadcasters and opposing coaches wax eloquent about his athletic ability and uncanny decision-making skills. Sanford Stadium is dotted every Saturday with little boys wearing No. 11 jerseys and dreaming of growing up to be like him.
But that’s not the way his teammates think of him.
“He’s a nerd,” said wide receiver Tavarres King, one of Murray’s closer friends. “He’s always studying, and he already knows so much. It’s hard to even talk to him outside of football because it’s always going to get back to football, whatever we’re talking about.”
Said wideout Michael Bennett: “He’s got some weird study habits when it comes to quarterback. He’s in here [at the football complex] all the time. He spends a weird amount of hours in here. … Sundays he’s in here real early. Saturdays he comes back here right after a game. He’s here five or six hours a day. It’s all football with him.”
Sure, Murray is physically gifted. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound quarterback is faster than most think, bigger and stronger than generally given credit for and in possession of a throwing arm that’s starting to give NFL scouts cause for pause.
But that’s not what has made him into the record-setting passer he has become for the Bulldogs. That, those around him contend, is a result of his bookish approach to the position.
“Aaron just prepares really like no one we’ve had,” said Georgia coach Mark Richt, who has had David Greene, the quarterback with the most wins in NCAA history when he left, and Matthew Stafford, an NFL No. 1 draft pick, among his quarterbacks. “And we’ve had guys that work hard. All of our guys work hard at preparing, but Murray just takes it to another level in how he prepares for the game.”
An exceptional student, Murray has found a way to take an academic approach to football. The fourth-year junior already holds an undergraduate degree in psychology. Now he’s well into his graduate studies in industrial-organizational psychology. It’s actually a doctoral program in which students can get a master’s degree along the way.
Murray has found a way to use his field of study to help him on the field of play. His first step was to write a paper on the leadership qualities of successful NFL quarterbacks. Murray studied quarterbacks such as Drew Brees of the Saints and Tom Brady of the Patriots and looked for similarities in their leadership qualities and styles of play.
This summer he took that project a step further. He fashioned the information he had gathered into a long and detailed survey. He distributed them to the entire team, coaches included.
“I wanted to assess my leadership skills and just figure out ways in which I could improve different aspects of my leadership,” Murray said. “One of my main goals coming into the season was to become the best leader I could be. So I got some great feedback.”
Murray figures 60 to 70 players returned the surveys. Some of them weren’t sure what to make of it.
“I was like, ‘why do we have to fill this out, man? I don’t want to do this,’” Bennett said with a laugh. “I think everybody on the team was thinking that.”
Said Richt: “I thought it took a little bravery to do that, to hear what your peers have to say, to hear what your coaches have to say. He was looking for a gut-level answer and he had to be willing to do something about it. I thought it was good.”
So what did Murray learn?
“The majority [of the feedback] was actually very good,” he said. “I think the one area that was lowest was me getting onto the guys more. Not being so nice, basically. So that was one improvement I needed to make. Sometimes you’ve got to get tough as a leader and make sure guys are focused and doing the right thing.”
Hard to argue with the production Georgia is getting out of Murray this season. He enters Saturday’s game against Tennessee ranked eighth in the nation in pass efficiency (182.43) and tops in the country among quarterbacks with 100 or more attempts in yards per attempt (10.5) and yards per completion (15.83).
Murray already has passed for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns with only two interceptions. More important, he is directing an offense that leads the SEC in points (47.5 pg) and total yards (530 pg).
It’s unclear whether it’s the result of leadership surveys, hours in the film room or just the plain and simple fact that he will start his 32nd game as Georgia’s quarterback Saturday. More than likely it’s a combination of it all.
“Aaron has always done a great job of preparing himself and recognizing what’s going on,” offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo said. “He’s just kind of taken it to another level.”
It’s not like Murray had been dogging it. He established a school record with 35 touchdowns passes last season. Heading into Saturday’s game he needs just four more to surpass Greene’s record of 72 career TD passes.
“It took me four years to do that,” said Greene, who graduated in 2005, and now lives in Grayson and runs a corporate insurance business. “To do what he’s done over the three-year period has been phenomenal. He’s special. He’s doing something that’s never been done at the University of Georgia. We’ve been fortunate to have Aaron Murray.”
Yes, being a nerd can be cool.

Great article Chip. I have been critical of Murray in the past. He has a tendency to overthrow his recievers and has not played well in big games. Then he came out Saturday and had the game of his career. One of the best performances I’ve seen out of a UGA team since the Sugar Bowl against Hawaii. Good to see that his hard work and dedication to becoming a better player and leader are paying off.

But the biggest key is UGA is finally establishing a consistant, at times dominant running game. That allows Murray to make easier reads at the line and sets up easy completions. Easy completions lead to confidence, which leads to big plays and wins.

Really? Really? Slydog, for one, vandy’s margin of loss per SEC opponent until this game over the last five was only a little over four points. They play tough, secondly, wkmorris, that is a very foolish statement. You have no idea how developed Murray was his freshman year. You NEVER put a freshman out on the field in the QB position unless you ABSOLUTELY have too! I doubt very seriously that he was near ready for SEC competition out of high school. Does anyone remember Staffords first year here? It was horrible! He looked like an orphan on the street! He had NO clue how to read the defenses and it showed. Murray has been brought up for success. His hard work has paid off, and I really don’t think any of you can say that you saw the practices which determined whether he was going to redshirt.

@slydog, you are, in fact, actually just a jackass. As Greene said, it took him four years to set the number that Murray’s going to best in two and a half. According to Richt’s statement at the time, yes, we’d be having the conversation because Murray was the starter over Mett. The G-Day geniuses who saw Mett throw a handful of completions better than Murray are obviously qualified to evaluate talent moreso than Richt and Bobo. In addition, Mett’s 4 TDs and 2 INTs through four games doesn’t exactly setting the world on fire. Did I miss something whereby adjectives these days require quotation marks? When Murray beats all of those teams that qualify as ‘good’ in your esteemed estimation, I would like you to publicly recant and admit that you’re a ‘dumb’ ass.

@ foxdog, it’s amazing how many people think they know best just by looking at a few games. The coaching staff has hours, days, months, maybe even years in some cases of practices and film on these players but these fools know soooooo much more than they do. It’s a joke. Murray has improved dramatically from day one. His footwork has improved, his reads have improved, his armstrength has improved, his accuracy has improved…if it hadn’t, he wouldn’t be on the verge of setting these records! Murray is one of the greatest qb’s to play at UGA, if you don’t believe me, look at the stats. @Slydog,
So according to you and other “Murray bashers” it is his fault we haven’t beaten a ranked team? If that is the case then if we win a NC then Murray gets full credit, no one else….absolutely no one else!!!! The bashers are totally out of touch with reality. Murray is an important part of the equation, but for example he didn’t drop the 2 perfect TD passes in the 1st half against LSU and he was not on the punting team in that game that allowed the 2 huge 1st half returns. Same comments can be said for the SC game last year. It is a team sport so quit blaming Murray for not winning the big games……it is the team who failed to win those games.

I saw Archie nearly beat a great Bama team in Tuscaloosa around 1967 (give or take a year). I think the Bama QB was Steve Sloan or Kenny Stabler …..and Bama was ranked #1. Manning set 7-8 records for a QB including close to 200 yards rushing and approximately 300+ yards passing. It was an incredible game, but Ole Miss lost by a close score….something like 42-39. Based on stupid blogger logic…..I guess it was all Archie’s fault!!! It is a team sport guys…Murray can’t win it by himself.

Murray had an injury the yr. that Cox had the job. Cox’s numbers weren’t all the bad. I believe he actually almost got to Stafford’s TD record that Murray ended up breaking, & was actually on pace to do so, but they didn’t throw the ball as much going down the stretch. He did have a lot of interceptions. I just don’t believe that Ints are always the QBs fault though, but it can also sometimes be a result of how the rest of the team plays as well. You should keep in mind that Cox didn’t have hardly any experience coming into that yr. either. I definitely feel that he would’ve been much better if he would’ve had another yr. or so to improve, but QBs don’t always have that luxury. There are many QBs that struggle one yr., but then they light it up the next.
Huh?

So I’m an idiot, jackass, troll for making an astute judgement as to the current state of Murray’s greatness? You stat nerds need to go back and watch baseball. This is about football. Football is about shining big in the biggest moments against the best competition available. It’s about winning championships, not how many Pro Bowls I went to or how many All SEC accolades I’ve won. All that being said, I like Murray, but just like Matt Ryan, he has accomplished nothing of significance. YET!!! You same idiots jumped off the bandwagon when Georgia went 0-2 last year so STFU. IMHO, Georgia and Murray are doing exactly what they should be doing: dominating inferior competition. South Carolina, Florida, and the SEC Championship game awaits. Screw those records. Funny someone mentioned Fran Tarkenton earlier. Folks would always say, “Tarkenton could not win the big game”. That was such a stupid comment because it was totally untrue and to my point with Murray. I remember a championship game with (I think) the Dallas Cowboys. Fran drove the Vikings down the field in a spectacular and dramatic manner and scored with 1-2 minutes left in the game. Guess what? Dallas then scored with a few seconds left to win and all I heard for years was Fran Tarkenton could not win the big game. It was the defense folks who lost that game after Fran set the stage for the big win. Sometimes I think those same ignorant trolls are still around and spewing their venom at Murray. This thread is about Murray, not Mettenberger. And you know as well as I, that if he were still around, this job would have been a toss up two years ago. But anyway, back to Murray. Or do you need some more to time to elucidate with Charlie Crack Sheen? This is a sports blog. If you want to jab me with your English, meet me at a Starbucks….lmao

I am interested to know how you came up with the statement, that he is 10X the play caller Bobo is. You don’t actually feel he is calling the plays do you? Bobo is still calling the plays. About the only thing that could be said about Bobo in the past was he was too conservative on third downs, but as can be seen now, if you have decent running, that goes away also. Murray brings all of the skills you could want to the table, and he is outstanding so far this year, but make no mistake about it, he is running Bobo’s offense, so give the man some credit as well.

Tarketon was not possessed of a strong arm, and played in an entirely different era. His ability to scramble, in an era where the QB was mostly a pocket passer, is what made Tarketon unique. In today’s football world, he most likely would have had trouble surviving the big men that plow through lines and the sophisticated defenses that mask coverage so well. He would not have the body size to survive the hits the QB’s take at both the college and PRO. levels these days.

Slydog,
I believe LSU was a physically more dominant team last year, but it looks like that advantage over UGa is not the case this year. I’d love for them to knock-off Bama and play us again in the SEC championship game. But, we have a lot of work ahead of us to just win the “east”….which may be the overall toughest side of the conference.

Chip this would have been a great article if it was more timely, sadly the national media has just crowned the Driskell kid from UF as the best QB in the SEC…he has less yards and TD’s than Murray but hey who are we to argue with their vast knowledge? Do you mean, “has UGa beaten a a top 10 team”? Murray is just one player on a team. He doesn’t play on special teams, defense, punt, block, catch passes, etc. He is just part of a TEAM. I really expect Murray to continue to develop into a superior QB, We have to make sure that we protect the edges and the line has to continue to give him time to get the ball down field. I am so proud of these guys. We are starting a lot of freshman and that a great sign becasue it will allow these guys to become a solid unit as they grow with UGA. THIS IS OUR YEAR. I FEEL CONFIDENT IN OUR TEAM. We really havent faced anyone that would give us any hell yet, but with SC and FLA coming up, we must conitue to focus on” one game at a time”. Brainiac—- a little information David Greene also started as a Redshirt Freshman not as a true Freshman as you stated. But you made a very good point about Aaron Murray. Also David Greene played on better overall teams in his first two years as a starter than has Murray as they were able to run the football on a more consistent basis giving him time in the pocket as defenses had to respect the possibility that it would be a running play.
Now as to other commenters- the jury is still out but we will definitely know more about this team after Saturday’s game with Tennessee and especially the following Saturday against South Carolina. And as most of you know it is a team sport and most of the Dawgs problems the last 4 years are due to numerous problems having nothing to do with Aaron Murray, Joe Cox, or Matt Stafford but injuries, bad behavior on the part of certain individuals being suspended or kicked out of school and lack of recruiting in the most important positions in football the offensive and defensive lines.

#1. Special Teams…looks improved so far, especially the tackling. Not completly sold on our kicker yet,but he will get better as he matures. He has done a fair job and we have not had to rely on many FGs…
#2. Coach Bobo’s play-calling…is anyone else impressed besides me? Balance, balance, balance.Weapons coming out of his ears. I would like to see more swing passes and more passes to TEs, but you are in denial if you think he isn’t doing a great job.
#3. Young Offensive Line…with help from the TEs and FBs, CWF has done an outstanding job. Trust me, David “Boss” Andrews will be fine at Center. Coach Friend may have done more with less, than any coach in our league…
#4. Team staying out of trouble…yeah, this is a biggey. I want to thank this team for coming togeather and becoming a “team”

The vandy game was a complete game. It was good to see the OL run block for a change. UT will have better athelets. UT will pass the ball all night. THIS WILL BE A CLOSE GAME!!! I have an important question for all the negative bloggers. When UGa beats SC…..what happens when SC also loses to LSU and FL and is no longer ranked? Will the Dawgs and Murray get credit for beating a “ranked team” or not? Seems like the naysayers keep changing the rules as we go along. Example: Auburn and GT were both ranked last year (early on)….and UGa beat the snot out of both of them. Kinda like the idiots who say UGa’s opponents this year have a losing record. Well, knuckleheads…..if UGa had lost to those 4 teams then they would have winning records!!!

#1. Conplacency, a feeling of contentment and self-satisfaction in conjunction with an unawareness of danger or trouble ahead. I keep saying “One game at a time! ” UT can beat us if we let down our guard looking ahead to SC. Tenn. wants to win this game bad. They are aware UGA has a very good team and will play-up to us. Question is, will we play down to them? We have a history of doing this…
#2. Should Ogeltree & Rambo start??? I think we should “work” them in, not start them. They should have to play themselves into a starting role…
#3. Will our players continue to stay out of trouble??? Our opposition is waiting to pounce on any Bulldawg that messes up. We haven’t given them anything to cry about lately. This is good…

Hopefully we will not fall victim to the same timing issue that haunts another Murray (Andy). I get why people doubt Murray. He hasn’t won a big game, and while it is a team effort, I still put a lot of the blame on him for USCe and Michigan State last year. We may not be 4-0 if not for the easy beginning this year as Murray was very, very slow to warm-up and we cannot afford that against Tenn, USCe, or Florida.
Still, this team is beating the teams it should. The Vandy game was utter dominance and it started with Murray coming out of the gate on fire as opposed to waiting until the second half. It is the QB, and more often than not, the team goes as the QB goes. This team has figured out a lot in its first four games which is a credit to both the coaches and the players commitment. If we can get the W this weekend, it is going to be a mean game in Columbia.
All I can say is that USCe looked really, really good defensively against Missouri. They handled them significantly better than we did. On the flip side, we did the same to Vandy which USCe struggled mightily against. Not sure if was early jitters for both teams, having more tape to review for the game, etc.

In big games, the problem isn’t necessarily Murray, as opposed to BoBo. Let’s see if BoBo will call more screens, slants, and passes to the TE’s when the running game bogs down and the defense doesn’t give you a short field on every other possession against a team that’s just as physically talented as you. BoBo’s doing a great job now because everything is clicking. Remember folks, in sports, 70% of the coaches require good to great players to make themselves seem worth all that money. Some coaches make good to great players even better. BoBo does not strike me as the latter.

Don’t blame you for your doubts. Most all of us have lingering doubts, but you can’t lay all the “wins & losses” at Murray’s feet. 11 players on offense must do their job against a “ranked” team to beat them. When the Oline breaks down, or the WRs drop the ball or a RB misses a blocking assignment or a Coach calls a bad play, is that Murray’s fault too? Have faith. We got by Mizz.and Vandy. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. This team is focused. They know they haven’t accomplished anything yet except that they are off to a good start.
The MEDIA is what fuels all this Heisman talk and all this National title talk it’s not the head coaches like Saban and Richt. They both know that they are one injury away from a disaster for their team. If their QB’s go out or a great running back go’s down a lot can change. The reason Richt and a lot of coaches are playing their Freshmen running backs is to build depth at that position in case someone does get hurt. Not as easy to build depth at Quarterback.

UGA didn’t play many starters at all in the 4th qtr Vandy game. That’s not significant really nor is SC’s win over a hapless Mizzou.
We’re better than SC, they know it and we know it. We were better than SC the last two years. They had Lattimore, we didn’t.

Correction
We still have Lattimore and the dogs still need to learn how to tackle him.

Good points UGA 5-0: all of them.
And I think Murray’s teammates were right in their assessment of him. I’ve seen him get on guys last game which is good to see. I’ll be very frank guys: this Bulldog team will go as far as they want to go. Sure they could lose to Tennessee, South Carolina, or Florida, but it’s going to take exceptional effort from them and a LOT of not caring from us to make that happen. This team this year has shown me that they care. It this team truly wants it, I have no reason to believe why they can’t go 12-0 this season( and this is not coming from some UGA Homer). Are we good enough to beat Bama right now? Honestly, NO( but who knows 2 month’s from now). But everyone else? If we bring our A game, we got a shot, we really do.

Haters gon hate. They are scared because they have been seeing their “demise” coming in the form of a Red & Black Horse of their Apocalypse…Win one game at a time. UT is going down just like a good Vandy team that got dismantled. A Vandy team that almost beat a well coached Spurrier team ranked in the top 10. Jarvis & Tree are going to make Bray run for his life. Expect a few new wrinkles for this game, but no more than we have to. CMR is saving his playbook for the “crybaby” lil stevie. Tenn. is a trap game, but when we beat them, the trolls will still say we beat nobody. And when we March through Columbia and burn that stadium to the ground, the trolls will say SC was down for some reason or other, just wait till Fla and so on…One game at a time Doggies…

Dogs fans, a few requests/advice:
1. Please don’t lose to the Vols – ESPN Gameday would be nice for Oct. 6.
2. Please no injuries vs the Vols – we want to beat you at full strength on Oct. 6.
3. Stop telling yourselves how good you are – you don’t want to embarrass yourselves on Oct 6.
Thank you.

How many points did Ashlon & Ingram account for against UGA last year? Lattie is a great back, but he’s not the same RB he was last year and don’t say he’s better because he isn’t. How many points did Lattimore have against us? It will be a good game, but The Dawgs are Waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than a Vandy team that almost kicked your a$$€$ and you know it. All you’re doing is “whistling through the graveyard” right now, lol…

Wo cares where sc and tenn are ranked…you beat your rivals at uga…and you remain hbc at uga for a long time. And Richt has done that for the most part. I will be SICK AS HELL IF WE LOSE TO EITHER TEAM. I just hope grantham is the real deal…the jury is still out on him…It just seems like the players havent fully grasped the scheme at times because they don’t know where to lineup and the blow coverages…does that fall on grantham for giving them to much…or the players just are incapable of learning the full sceme a 100%

Last I heard Georgia has played 23 Freshmen this year. Why would anyone think that there would be blown assignments. They are learning as fast as they can but Georgia will never be as good as Alabama or L.S.U. unless we develop at least two deep and three deep if possible of players at as many positions as possible without the quality of play decreasing.

AUBIE was ranked #20 last year! When you crush a ranked team 45-7 on natinal tv, they tend to become unranked. Duh! Aubie went to SCAR (11-2) and won last year.

I BIG reason Aaron Murray and the running are playing at a high level is because of the offensive line play. That was the biggest question in the off season in my opinion and if they stay healthy and continue to play better I expect a great season.

Also South Carolina players will remember that we beat them silly last year . Our defense only gave up 22 points. They scored the rest on Georgia’s mistakes. Example, a tackle ran a fake punt back for a touchdown. How many times does that happen in all of College football in a complete year. Our senior field goal kicker missed two chip shots. Even Spurrier admitted he doesn’t see how they beat Georgia last year. Lattimore is definitely still a great back but he doesn’t hit the holes quite as fast as he did before he was injured. If we can contain Clowney and keep Murray from getting killed ,Georgia would have already won the psychological war before the game starts. Murray , Gurley , Marshall and our defense will take care of the rest.

I know it’s Sherbert week, but can some reporter please ask SOS this ?, “Does the SEC schedule rotate or do you unfairly play LSU more than Georgia?” UGA has 3 extra games against LSU that SCAR doesn’t – SECCG!!! When did CMR or any other coach complain about the rotating SEC schedule? I know, just beat the crap out of the Sherberts this week. Nothing else matters. Cock fans get on my nerves sometimes.

Murry has shown improvement for sure. Better ball security and better decisions. This year we have seen great games played by both sides of the ball. Yes it was Vandy, but Vandy has been better and playing teams hard. Also you have to think that Vandy had this game circled for us. I think we got the best Vandy could offer and gave them our best. The players proved alot to me. With a good game plan and a complete effort for 4 qtrs this team can play with anyone in the nation…and win.
As far as saying he’s better than Greene…hard to say. Stats say he will be better, but what about championships? Never compare past players to present players. I’m just thankful that we had Greene and have Murray now. After the chicken game we’ll see how this team looks. If the Dawgs can handle SC like they did Vandy, then I think Bama and LSU will be glad neither of them had to play UGA this year!!

WDE, DAWG76,
Thanks for the comments. I think you guys understand that I am not being a neg head. I have defended Murray, Richt, and yes even Bobo for quite a while. I felt like coming in as an RS freshman and taking on a team in transition with a poor running game and pressure from the fans was outstanding. My respect for him skyrocketed when he got up and threw strikes after that jerk Farley drove him into the ground and popped him late.
I do not doubt his ability to win big games. I just think he needs a few of those type of wins to go down as one of the college greats. He’s a winner. He’ll get them.

It is real there guy. Wait for adversity before getting behind the team. That doesn’t make much sense when you think about it does it? I know you’re a DGD chazzo but, c’mon, wait until they’ve beat someone? Is that what you mean?

All you “boasters” might be a little careful. Just saying my team is gonna beat the snot outa yours can cause a good bit of digestion from crow feathers. Why not just wait and see?
And for Aaron’s play at QB for me is most impressive. I’ve not seen him make the wrong turn for any hand off in the backfield. He is very smooth with his handling of the ball, and his passes are just and smooth and on target as I’ve seen at Georgia. No, I’m not saying he the best, far from it. That will be discussed years from now, but for now the fellow is getting it done. If the offensive line gets their job done, this year will be a phenomenal year. Everything else is as good as I’ve seen it, and that’s over the last 42 years for me. Sorry, I’m from Alabama but I was raised an Ole Miss fan.
Back when they still had the flag, among other things I cared for. But I’m a Ga boy now. Go Dawgs.

Hey I want the Dawg’s to win every thing. Be 12 and 0 then win the SEC. Then the NC, but the team I want to smash every year is those Yellar Pissants from Atlanta. If we beat them 60 to 0, I want the final score to be 90 to 0. I don’t like orange but I hate Yellar. My favorite colors is Red and Black.
I think Bobo has opened up the playbook a little more this year. Offense wins games, defense wins championships. I look for Rambo to have a great game Saturday, he should be hungry for an interception or 2.

Murray is nerdy, but he’s also like Eddie Haskell…always polite and respectful, reminds one of a choir boy, he is around things that may be problem, but somehow ol’ Eddie wiggles his way out of trouble…people just think he’s squeaky clean…yep, most thinks he’s like Wally, but he’s Eddie
