ATHENS – This time around, the only drama between Georgia and Vanderbilt was the pregame coin toss.

The No. 5-ranked Bulldogs won that little contest and nearly every one thereafter, cruising to a 48-3 win over the Commodores Saturday night at Sanford Stadium.

The stress-free victory came less than a year after Vanderbilt pushed the Bulldogs to the brink in Nashville before losing 33-28 in a nail-biter that ignited a postgame shouting match between Commodores head coach James Franklin and Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. This time it ended in a friendly handshake between the two men at midfield.

“We were going to go out there and, you know, have a group hug and then everybody’s going to go their way and move on,” Grantham quipped afterward. “They coach them hard, they play hard and they’re trying to be competitive. We’re all competitive. So we shook hands and moved on.”

Said Georgia coach Mark Richt: “That’s good. They should shake hands.”

There wasn’t much to argue about Saturday as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 27-3 first-half lead and never looked back. Georgia, which came into the game averaging 47.7 points and leading the SEC in total offense, have now scored more than 40 points in four consecutive games for the first time in school history.  Coupled with the stingy defensive effort and solid specials teams play, it ended up as one of the Bulldogs’ most complete victories in recent memory.

“It’s hard to do that,” Richt said. “It’s just rare. I think our guys really wanted this one bad. They didn’t feel good about the way things went a year ago. . . . We wanted to prove we were better than that.”

The win was the 14th straight regular-season victory for Georgia and gets it off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2008, when they began the year ranked No. 1.

The Bulldogs take a 2-0 SEC record into next week’s home game against Tennessee, which will be nationally-televised on CBS. The Vols (3-1, 0-1 SEC) defeated Akron 47-26 Saturday night in Knoxville.

Georgia’s win was one of such total and complete domination it is difficult to know where to begin. Start with quarterback Aaron Murray, who had passed for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran in for another one by the end of the third quarter. He didn’t play the fourth.

“I felt good,” said Murray, who completed his first 12 passes of the night and hit nine different receivers on the night. “The O-line did one heckuva job and gave me plenty of time. Any quarterback can sit back there with a nice pocket. My job’s easy when you have a great offensive line and great receivers.”

The Bulldogs’ dynamic freshman tailback duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall continued to wow.

Gurley executed a 29-yard scoring run that was reminiscent of the kind another freshman back made at Georgia 30 years ago. He broke four tackles on the jaunt, including stiff-arming a safety to the ground to spring him the final 15 yards. Gurley finished with 130 yards on 16 carries and 2 touchdowns. That gives him 406 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns on 44 carries for the season.

“That was kind of Herschel Walker-ish,” senior flanker Tavarres King said with a grin.

Said junior guard Dallas Lee: “That was the coolest stiff arm I’ve ever seen in person. I can’t wait to go back and watch it on film. He’s a great running back and I love watching him run. It’s an honor to block for him.”

Marshall also scored twice and added 82 yards on 10 carries. The Bulldogs rushed for 303 yards on the night and had 568 yards. Georgia has now scored more than 40 points in four games in a row for the first time ever.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs’ defense could do no wrong either. The Commodores appeared to have scored a touchdown on a Jordan Rodgers’ run early in the fourth quarter. But an official review of the TD ruling on the field was overturned via replay. Rodgers’ had fumbled the ball into the end zone and Georgia was given the ball via touchback.

“We love the way we played today,” said junior outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had a sack and three tackles for loss among his 7 tackles. “We played good on every level, offense, defense and special teams. We’ve got to play like that every week to be a championship-caliber team. If we keep playing like that I think we can go where we’re trying to go.”

The game got off to a perfect start for Georgia. After winning the toss and deferring to the second half, the Bulldogs, with the help of three offensive penalties, limited Vanderbilt to one yard and the Commodores had to punt from their own 15. Malcolm Mitchell returned the ensuing punt 14 yards to midfield.

Georgia then ran the ball five times in seven plays where Gurley scored on a 4-yard run over left tackle to post a quick lead. Gurley ran the ball four times for 21 yards on the drive and Murray had completions of 16 and 11 yards.

That proved to be just the beginning for Murray. The Bulldogs’ junior signalcaller completed his first 12 passes of the night – that’s third-best in UGA annals – and Georgia scored touchdowns on its first four possessions of the night in building a 27-0 lead in the first 25 minutes. The only blemish was a botched snap on a point-after try.

Even when the Bulldogs had to punt it went well for them. Vandy’s Caleb Azubike was called for roughing Collin Barber on Georgia’s first punt of the night, and the Bulldogs covered the remaining 60 yards in two runs by Marshall, the second one going 52 yards up the middle for a touchdown.

“I have to give Georgia credit; they are a very good football team and ranked No. 5 for a reason,” Vanderbilt’s Franklin said. ” I think the difference in the game was up front, especially with their offensive line. They did a good job.”

The Dawgs are on a roll. The offense is scoring at will and the defense can shut most teams down. Jarvis is the best player in football, Gurley is a man amongst boys. He runs like Reggie Bush, and Adrian Peterson. Marshall is a blazer and if he gets a crease he’s gone. TK can run past almost every DB he faces. This team is special and they are only getting better. Lon, they are too depressed to post. Awesome game on all points, but I have to say I was just thrilled by the improvement in the offensive line! The other thing I’m thrilled over: 9 and 18 getting out of purgatory. I hope they have learned a great lesson, and that they make up for the time off with some great games. A lot of great games, but Brown, Murray, Jones and the line stand out. Go Dawgs.

A good win. However, SC looked real good beating MO. They have a real good defense and their QB is as good as Murray. That is going to be a close game and will be decided by a TD. Defense is going to decide the winner in that game.

Quote from FAU Coach UGA vs. Bama:

The Owls (1-3) managed only one first down through three quarters and were outgained 503-110 in total yards. They were coming off a 56-20 loss to another Southeastern Conference power, No. 5 Georgia.

Florida Atlantic coach Carl Pelini called Alabama “as physical a team as there is out there.”

“That’s not Georgia we faced today, that’s Alabama – it’s very different, “Pelini said. “Different scheme-wise. I think they’re more physical than Georgia. You know, I don’t compare teams but they’re just different. They play differently. They pressure more than Georgia did. They’re physical in their man coverage.”

We’re improving in so many ways, and it is fun to watch.

Having a stable of quality running backs is an obvious and huge improvement. The line knows that holes opened will be filled briefly as our backs slash through them. The quarterback knows that it’s not all on the passing game. The offensive coordinator even looks like he knows what he’s doing all of the sudden.

Anyone thinking the rest of the teams on our schedule are going to play dead hasn’t been paying attention. LSU was fortunate to get past Auburn. The chickens looked very, very good against the nice fellows from Columbia, MO. The Gators are much better, I think, than they were last year, and they, like Tennessee, often play above themselves when they play us. Even hapless Tech sometimes rises above their NATS roots to give us a good game.

We’ve got a long way to go, and I’m not counting chickens just yet, but it sure was fun to see a Georgia team, and a Georgia coaching staff that looked like they had their act together.

I’m a true dog fan myself, but I gave up on Kool Aid a long time ago. Loving the Bulldogs, and the University does not mean embracing everything that goes on. Many of us can make a list, but right now is a time for celebration, and for congratulating the coaches and players for a wonderfully well played, planned, and executed football game. I’m hoping for many more. Some will have to be even better than this one, but there are signs of real learning in Athens.

I was really impressed with the Bulldogs tonight. Wow!

Go, Georgia Bulldawgs.

You are exactly the “fan” True is talking about. Get on board or go to heck! The Dawgs have a GREAT team and so does Bama, and I don’t give a crap what Carl Pelini says. His comments have no bearing on what a future Bama-UGA match’s outcome. Bama is not invincible and their opening week win against Michigan is looking less and less impressive as weeks go by. And everyone has been complaining about the defense for 3 weeks, me I kept telling everyone we are playing some true freshmen etc and even Mitchell getting used to playing corner. People kept ragging about where our defense ranked. Well last year we finished 5th and gave up 28 points and a whole lot more of yardage to Vandy than we did this year. So four games in means nothing and not to worry. I think we held them to right around or under 100 yards rushing and about 200 yards passing and a while 3 points. So I would say we did better than last year and better than south Carolina did for sure. On another note people complain about the offense. Today we ran for 305 yards when lattimore and Carolina came nowhere close to those numbers. I kept hearing how Vandy’s defense was ranked so high nationally and in the SEC and we sliced through it like butter. Murray did not have an incompletion fi many throws and on the ones that were missed they were very catchable and on Target, like the throw to Lynch. Come to think of it I don’t think he had one bad pass all game. He had a 75% completion ratio which isn’t bad. Also the O line gave him time and handled the blitz and we would get a big gain. The ESPN folks were amazed at Murray and how much better he has gotten since he started. They also showed and commented about the defensive guys keeping the younger ones in line esp when they almost scored. So I would say people need to chill and take it 1 week at a time. We are 4-0 with rocky top coming in next week who was strugging to beat akron midway through the 4th quarter. I think everyone will be fired up next week and ready to make it 5-0. Also if we play like we did tonight against SC we win. Mizzou handed that game to them today and we went to their house and Franklin was a fired up QB who had no confidence tonight and we beat them by one more point. And since we throttled Vandy and SC couldn’t I really like our chances. Go Dawgs!!!

@ UGA grad 94, last week bad week one we played a very vanilla defense, not to mention we had a ton of true freshman getting playing time at game speed and they played a ton of the game. I know Jordan Jenkins played, we had what one or two freshman corners, josh Harvey clemons played a ton too. The reason for this is to get them ready to start, so no we were not as physical as they were with true freshman. But I bet vandy would probably tell you the Dawgs made their head spin and SC did not. We are ready, and by the end of the year the 22 freshman who have played a ton so far will be ready and will ne rotating in all the time. The offense now has a running game, we had 1 back last year who was “hurt” half the time and our offense works best when we have running backs, now we have 3 really good ones. So if the D plays well I think we have a shot, as long as we take it one week at a time. Look up bama’s stats against their cupcakes and see how flawless they really are sometimes. They are a really good team, but we can be too.

Looking very forward to Tennessee coming in and what the UGA offense should do next week. 50+ points? Seems very likely. Getting closer to taking over that series all-time! That’s going to just eat up so many Vol fans, especially after they reeled off nine straight way back when and rubbed it in our faces. Next year they will lose their ninth straight to Florida, and UGA will win their second straight in Neyland!

True dawg and others fans who are skeptical. Let me say the key to a great team is leadership on the field and watching us this year shows leadership! If any team in the nation is missing 2 possible 1st rounders there defense would not be as good! Ogle tree and Rambo immediately improves our run defense which allows us to rush more and allow Mitchell, Cummings and Swann to stay with the receivers! The o-line is much improved and Gates is a born leader with Burnette! Yes it is only Vandy but that is what you are supposed to do to Vandy!!!!! Big props this year to Bobo mixing up the plays!!!

chazzo

Franklin’s plan to not concede anything and return every kick was a bad one. All that he conceded was 5-15 yards at the start of every series. UGA won the field position game in the first half because of it. I am surprised too that he didn’t challenge calls, particularly the catch 93rd or 4th Q) when the guy obviously got a foot down. Screwing with the QBs in the way that he has is also a bad idea. He may have a tough time holding it together.

UGA benefitted from a couple of bad calls. Vandy, though, was simply outmanned. UT ic kind of scary. UGA is coming off a landslide win; following UT is THE GAME, and Tyler Bray and receivers will eat Malcom Mitchell’s lunch.

I love Georgia, but they better get back down to planet earth. The competition thus far has been pretty weak.

Great job Dawgs! I can see why Ga. fans are so excited about a win over Vandy. It has been a hard game for the Dawgs for some time now. Vandy does seem at time to be on the rise and then all the close games they play. They just can`t seem put it together. A win is a win and it is a SEC game. Next week the Dawgs will face the best they have faced this season so far in TN. If Ga. keeps focused and play their ball they will win. Hopefully they will have ever one back on defense. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!

Great win DAWGS but it’s only one game and it’s a long season. I truly believe we have a great team who could have a very special season if we do these 3 things:

1) STAY HUMBLE
2) STAY HEALTHY
3) STAY OUT OF TROUBLE

Marshall Morgan needs to understand the PAT goes through the middle of the uprights, not trying to hit the upright. Need to give another kicker an opportunity before luck runs out.

I think Georgia looked very good last night, but the perspective of some Dawg fans on here is downright funny. Some go from wanting to fire their coach one week to stating that “this team can beat anyone” the following week. Then say Florida is not that good because they “just” went into very hostile environments and beat a bad Texas A&M team and beat a “way overrated” Tennessee team. Then Georgia beats an obviously very slow and not very good Vandy team, and the win is the best win for Georgia “in years.” Emotion…..not reason….dominates many of you. Georgia is obviously the team to beat in the East, but dominating Vandy does not make you the sure bet champions of the SEC. Believe me, Tennessee will be better than Vandy. And South Carolina and Florida will be a lot better than Tennessee. Georgia still has some big time battles on their hands in order to…..first…..win the East. Then….if they do…….Bama is certainly not Vandy.

Hey Hope Springs Eternal,

If you were honest with yourself and could be objective, you would have to admit that UGA looks as good as anybody right now. No one knows what will happen for the rest of the season and just like anyone else we could be decimated by injuries, but we have every right to be optomistic about this team. I am typically a pessimist and am definitely not one of the so called “Kool-aid drinkers” but I am excited about this team and the possibilities.

What do the Georgia players think about Rambo and Ogeltree? It seems to me that both are exceptional football players, but lack some basic things that are requred for a “good character” and “good teammate” label.

@A True Dawg…I’m a Georgia grad and a football fan who has spent the last six or seven years listening to the anti-Mark Richt crowd…”

Yes, and the “fire Bobo” crowd. Last year he averaged above 30 ppg and this year 47 ppg. Surprised we haven’t read, “If I see Bobo run Gurley up the middle one more time…!”

And, of course, won’t be long before Thomas Brown et al mention we haven’t beaten anybody with a winning record yet. How bout it UGA Grad 94? Is that your next post?

@1969 Grad…We’ve got a long way to go, and I’m not counting chickens just yet, but it sure was fun to see…”

I agree. We’re just celebrating a good win and being unbeaten…for now. The D almost pitched a shutout; BUT…Vandy did have some big gains and some big plays; that was a little worrisome. You could look at coach Grantham and know that he agrees; not to mention him playing starters well into the fourth quarter. A more accomplished team would have scored on us a lot more than Vandy did.

What I wanted to see, and did see, was the team and Murray come out ready to play; hitting on all cylinders from the start. For the most part, they “played 60 minutes” …except for the subs playing with eleven minutes to go.

Yes, Tenn, SC and Flawduh are going to be real tests. “The next game is the most important game.” So, we celebrate today and then get ready for the Vowels.

Great win! Said it’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!

@Tampa Gator. You make some good points, but…
“…Georgia beats an obviously very slow and not very good Vandy team, and the win is the best win for Georgia “in years”….”

Who said that? Most of us just know that Vandy has played us, and many others, very tough the last couple years. And this year they haven’t been blown out by anybody … until last night.

No, the best win “in years” was last year in Jax.

The Gaytors look like a very much improved team; whupped the Vowels pretty good. But, Tenn might get it together and play like they did against NC State. So the Dawgs have to prepare and play very well in order to get a win.

On a different note, notice how four weeks ago the pundits and detractors were saying, “Georgia doesn’t play Ala, LSU nor Arkansas”? Now they just say, “Ala and LSU”. Not a pretty picture in Fayetteville. And now they’re saying the East has more depth than the West.

No, Tampa, beating Vandy is not the greatest thing since sliced bread. But, we’re 4-0 and just beat a usually pretty testy Vandy. Many of us are a little skeptical of the #5 ranking. We’ve been let down before with high rankings. So, we get ready for Tenn and see what happens as the season unfolds…one game at a time.

Go Dawgs! GATA!

I wouldn’t dismiss this win over Vandy so easily, a team that went toe to toe with SC. Look at LSU/AU. One team goes in on a roll and the other comes in limping and the Bayou Bengals found themselves fighting for their lives……UGA came in and whacked Vandy…..it was an impressive win.

Pelini made that statement because Alabama shows what they do every game and Georgia shows only what need to get to get the job done.

Les Miles must have been eating a lot of grass because the pulled one out. If Van Gorder had a stick of rebar to chew on he would have spit 10 penny nails all night.

South Carolina brought their A game against Missou. Oct 6 could be interesting, but we can’t look ahead past Tennessee.

Does anyone else get tired af all these sports casters always harping on Georgia not playing LSU or Alabama and UGA’s soft schedule? Hey what can I say if we are good enouth to win the east then we wiil play one of them and then if we are good enouth to win we deserve a shot at the NCG. But we have to take care of one game at the time.

I believe the bad call on roughing the kicker resultied in the non call on fair catch.

Murray was really sharp but after 12 completions didn’t he miss the next 4-5. Big John wears that no.6 for a reason and if I were Mike Bobo when we play South Carolina he would be in the backfield and his job would be don’t let Clowney get near Murray.

Vandy it was nice but you are history now. I’m looking forward to seeing you play Missou as they will be looking for a SEC team they can whip-up on after Georgia and South Carolina got through with them.

I think it’s foolish to compare programs by how they look against a common opponent at this stage in the season. FAU’s Pelini’s comments should be taken with a grain of salt b/c we were looking to play our freshmen and newbies on D. Ask Vandy if UGA or South Carolina is better? Vandy should have beaten the chickens but looked awful against us. Neither is an accurate measure for who is the better team in the east. What last night showed is the team is beginning to gel and that is bad news for the rest of the SEC. BTW, UGA grad ‘94 is probably not a UGA grad misspelling a word like awful :-/.

I think it’s safe to say that Vandy is every bit on par with the 2012 Auburn team, if not even perhaps better… and that UGA handled them far better than LSU did AU.

So much for old Zack Bergerboy… aka – Mr. Sexual Battery.

It will be interesting to see whether the Dawgs get any respect from the desk jocks in the rankings… LSU should fall some but whether they come down far enough is the question.

Dwayne,
I believe the excitement is over the MANNER in which UGa beat Vandy……not the fact that they won a game. Vandy in recent years has played everyone close…..in fact, the biggest margin of victory against them in regular season since 2010 was 6 points in an overtime game. They play tough with lots of pride and they were incredibly fired-up for UGa. We should be excited because most great teams would have trouble pulling off a lopsided game against Vandy…..and that was just a 3 qtr game. No scoring and no offensive starters after 45 minutes of play.

A complete game – well executed in every phase. Yeah Vandy’s not what they were last year but they aren’t much worse – they have a decent team and the Dawgs simply dominated them. On Vandy, their defense was averaging an allowance of 8+ points a game going into our game. Not that they are Alabama, but they had played very solid defense until last night, and their list of opponents included a top ten team. So, I wouldn’t heap disrespect on them. Everybody knows TN has a very strong and explosive team, and that SC will be even better than the Vols. The Gators will be the toughest of the three imo. However, there are no easy games in the SEC–just ask LSU. We are going to have to continue improving each week to make it to Miami, but we do have serious potential. We’ll get a good idea over the next two weeks. Go Dawgs.

Borrowed a ticket from a friend and had to sit in front of this obnoxious redneck who bitched about Georgia and Bobo for the first 45 mintutes of the game. Made sure he was loud enough for everyone to hear. My favorite was ‘this team will not do anything until we get a real offensive coordinator’. He must have said it ten times. We finally began to taunt him by yelling a celebratory fire Bobo everytime we scored. Or yelling that he should have run the ball if we got the first down on the pass and vice versa. Pretty soon the whole group around him started doing it. I had been warned about this white trash potty mouthed “Georgia Fan(?)” when I was given the ticket. He kept his mouth shut by half time and left before the third period started. It was almost like he would have rather been right than win. He wouldn’t even hardly celebrate when we scoerd. It really was nice to finally put a face to a troll and realize what miserable worhless individuals they are. As for our Tech fans… all I have to say is HA!
