ATHENS — When Georgia coach Mark Richt offered Alpharetta High wide receiver Michael Bennett a scholarship in the summer of 2009, Bennett resisted the urge to accept on the spot.
“I felt like that might seem a little desperate,” Bennett said with a laugh this week. “So I gave it a few days.”
Georgia was the first — and as it turned out the only — SEC school to offer Bennett a scholarship. Richt made the offer on the spot after watching Bennett, who was about to enter his senior year of high school at the time, catch passes against some of the Southeast’s top cornerback prospects during a camp on the UGA campus. The skills Richt saw that day are becoming apparent to all.
After redshirting as a UGA freshman in 2010 and showing considerable promise in 2011, Bennett has emerged as the Bulldogs’ most productive receiver in the early stages of this season. Through three games, he leads the team in catches (17) and receiving yards (265).
Two weeks ago, he had a career-high eight catches against Missouri. Last week, he had a career-high 110 receiving yards against Florida Atlantic, including a career-long 67-yard touchdown catch.
The recruiting services ranked the 6-foot-3 Bennett as a three-star prospect in high school. But when he attended the “Mark Richt Camp” in Athens in June 2009, a number of four- and five-star defensive backs were on the field with him.
“It was actually a camp where we felt we had gotten some of the better cover cornerbacks to come and participate, some kids from around the Southeast,” Richt recalled. “We were really anxious to see what those guys could do. And then Michael Bennett showed up and started whipping ’em.”
During a camp lunch break, as Richt remembers it, the Georgia coach mentioned to his staff that the kid from Alpharetta made an impression on him during the morning session. He told his assistants to keep an eye on Bennett in the afternoon session and to continue testing him by matching him up against the best defensive backs because “we might offer this kid.”
“Sure enough, the second half of the camp, he continued to do what he did the first half,” said Richt, who recalled being impressed by Bennett’s route-running, hands, toughness, competitiveness and size. “So at the end of the camp, we offered him.”
Bennett remembers every detail of that day, from the weather (“real hot”) to Richt’s brief hesitation before offering.
“Coach Richt came up to me and was, like, ‘I don’t know if we’re ready to offer you yet,’” Bennett said. “I was, like, ‘Here we go again.’ My dad and I were kind of disappointed.”
Richt stepped away to consult with an assistant coach.
“He came back 30 seconds later and was, like, ‘All right, we’re going to offer you,’” Bennett said. “I was just, like, ‘Oh my gosh, those are the best words ever.’”
A few days later, Bennett committed to Georgia. At that point, he also had offers from Big Ten schools Wisconsin and Indiana, among others, but “I kind of wanted to stay close to home.”
In the three-plus years since, Bennett “has muscled up” and “gotten even better at what he does,” Richt said. “He likes every aspect of the game. He blocks well. He catches balls in traffic. We’ve seen him go deep a couple of times. Last year, he had a couple of phenomenal catches — one against Florida on fourth down and one against Auburn early in the game [both for touchdowns]. He’s just been very reliable for us.” Oh, and he has “pretty good game speed,” Richt said.
All in all, not bad for a three-star recruit.
“I wasn’t recruited highly coming in, so I’ve always had a little chip on my shoulder,” Bennett said. “To go in and contribute like this has been a real goal of mine.”
Bennett is part of a deep group of wide receivers that has prompted Georgia to increasingly embrace four-receiver sets. Three games into the season, three different Bulldogs have posted 100-yard receiving games: Tavarres King against Buffalo (117 yards), Marlon Brown against Missouri (106) and Bennett against Florida Atlantic. Rantavious Wooten and Chris Conley also are threats at wide receiver, and the position should grow stronger with the plan to expand receiver/cornerback Malcolm Mitchell’s offensive role.
Bennett is beginning to shake the label of “possession receiver,” which implies a lack of breakaway speed.
“He definitely hates that label,” Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray said.
Said King: “He’s going to be great before he leaves here.”

Great judgement by Richt and his staff to land this kid. It’s not always about the stars that a potential recruit has been labeled with. A great work ethic and good heart goes a long way. The coaching staff has also done a great job developing MB.

UGA has a nice group of receivers. No superstars (Mitchell could be one if he played fulltime), so opposing defenses can’t key in on any receiver in particular. As long as Murray throws to the hot hand of the game we’ll be fine.

Sometimes it’s not about how many “stars” you get labeled with during high school on recruiting but the fire in the heart when playing. Kids can really change and grow up over a couple years. Sometimes “hidden gems” can be overlooked or undeveloped – the walk on that plays with passion and practices hard all week, yet doesn’t get the press until the starter is injured.

Be interesting to see how many 3-star guys really produce around the SEC, vs. all the 4-5 star “elites” who ask what the school can do for them, commit/decommit, play the suspense game and all the other ridiculous antics. I’ve gotten to the point of ignoring all the recruiting hype and pull for the guys who show up on the Dawgs sideline in September.

Every football fan likes a WR who catches the ball in traffic, holds onto it when he gets whacked, gets up off the ground and then goes and catches another ball in traffic on the very next play. Bennett is an awesome kid and he reminds me a bit of Miles Austin.

Bennet may very well be my favorite receiver on the team. Actually, I like all our receivers. I can’t remember a time when I’ve felt so good about our WR’s as a group. But I’ve loved the way Bennet plays from his freshmen year. Effort + talent + knowing your assignments (blocking, route running) = one DGD at receiver.

GATA, I couldn’t agree more. The soap opera letdowns that come with following recruiting closesly are just… well they’re just not fun. I keep up with it slightly now, but not like I used to. Bennett is usually as reliable as the sun. A drop here and there, but who doesn’t have those. Murray is now rated above Barkly on the Heisman Watch. Marshall, Boo and Gurly are lining ‘em up and knocking ‘em down. Defense starts off slow, but then drops the hammer. Take each game, one game at a time. Beat Vandy then on to Knoxville. UGA might not be Bama at this point, but by the end of the season, we just may be pretty dad gum good. I think SC and FL are our only tripping points until the SECCG. Once we get to Atlanta (if it happens), the score is 0-0 and we just pin our ears back. GO DAWGS!

I have been most impressed with his blocking. There are a lot of big receivers that can catch, but if you want a nice pro career as a second or third receiver, you better be able to block well. I hate to admit it, but that is one reason that there have been some receivers not named Calvin from the Institute who have found NFL success (Calvin is a freak who would have been good no matter where he went).

The only team on that list I know for sure we cannot beat is Bama. Not right now at least. LSU hasn’t really played anybody yet so the jury is still out on them as far as I’m concerned, but I would imagine with their usual horde of big men up front that they would give us major problems. “I don’t know why some of you yahoos fear Bama.”
Probably because I’ve seen them play. They don’t make mistakes. Their defense doesn’t give up big plays. They don’t drop passes. McCarron has been on fire so far this year. They are in mid-November form right now and we are not. If we played them tomorrow they would spank us. If you don’t think Bama would give us major problems right now you are simply not being honest with yourself. Fortunately, we don’t play them tomorrow. Maybe they have peaked too soon? Maybe things we’ll be different if we both make it to the SECCG? Those are definite possibilities. I sure hope it turns out like that.

It is when he calls a draw or screen play on third and long instead of trying to get the ball down field. And quarterbacks have their reads, yes, but there are specific plays that allow certain receivers priority on the drop down list for that play.

Augustabred,
Tavarrus King said he wanted to fill the shoes of AJ Green last year and felt he was up to the challenge. I’m not comparing him to AJ Green, because rarely has there been an AJ Green anywhere else in the country, but King failed at his attempt to become a #1 receiver. He has made some nice catches, but his productivity is not there and he has too many drops. Brown would be good if he was healthy, but for the sake of football, you have to be healthy to play, it’s part of it. Achievements aren’t awarded in “what if” situations, they are based on actual production and Marlon Brown just doesn’t have enough to eclipse Michael Bennett. Mark Richt even said he has had a rough transition from high school ball to college level, so that there is more evidence to prove he’s just not there yet, though I hope he does get there. Michael Bennett is the most sure handed receiver Georgia has and it shows with the trust Aaron Murray has in him to throw his direction in times of need.

Love Bennent too, Contractor, his catch vs UF with time running out in the 1st half saved that game for the Dawgs. But don’t agree he’s the “only sure handed receiver Georgia has.”
Every one of them have fewer drops than, for instance, Roddy White, who is regarded as one of the NFL’s better receivers.
Bennent is a go-to receiver in any situation, but he had 2 or 3 drops vs Mizzou. I can’t think of another UGA receiver who has more than that. Brown has a couple, but as a group, they are excellent.

@Joe Jenkins, I’m a realist, too. I’m sold on the Dawgs, but not blind to their flaws. I watched Buffalo struggle the other night on ESPN and I couldn’t help but think about how they ran up and down the field on us and couldn’t pass gas against whoever they were playing Wednesday. So I guess I’m cautiously optimistic about ‘em. Without overlooking Vandy, I’m REALLY worried about Tennessee. People are writing them off because of last week, but the Dawgs have ALWAYS struggled against teams with strong passing attacks and the Vols receivers are legit. As for your list, I think we could beat many of the teams on the list, with the exception of ‘Bama or FSU. And West Virginia would be scary, too. But guess what? Unless and until we make the “post season,” we don’t have to play any of those guys!

I hope I am wrong and that all of the receivers catch 100% of the balls thrown their way and go for 1,000 yards a piece, but I know that will not happen and I feel as if Michael Bennett will come out in the end with more catches and more yards. He’s not going to burn anyone down the sideline, so I won’t say he’ll have the most touchdowns, but I feel as if he will take two out of the three categories over the rest or the receiving corps.

Has nothing to do with the 5 star thing
A 3 star recruit thats wants to be at UGA and win is much better than a 5 star recruit that could care less whether UGA does well
I think I remember Lindsey Scott talking about the same thing Im saying its time for Georgia to recruit players that want to be at UGA and win oh and go out and start beating FL I do know he said that last statement

Not so fast my friend. Yes they are good, not unbeatable. they put their panties on, one leg at a time just like everyone else. Nobody thought they would get beat anytime in the last 3 years, they have, they will get beat again. Are they in Nov form right now? Maybe, maybe not, maybe they’ll be better in Nov than they are now.
When the wheat is separated from the chafe, Bama hasn’t played any teams but hype at this point either Michigan? Arkansas? Really? I’m not ready to crown them champs yet. Am I a homer? Maybe but, I do think Georgia will has something to do with it

Watch Shawn Williams have another huge game. He played like his hair was on fire last week. If he has another good game and Cummings has the kinks out, look for Mitchell to make a pick while Jarvis wrecks the Vandy backfield. Also look for the LBs to have a strong game and force Vandy to pass. Need to hold the middle with outside pressure other than Jarvis. I think Grantham circled this game on his calender…

I agree if you coach your 3 star player he will produce like a 4 or 5 star. If you looked at last year draft class its was mostly dominated by 3 and 4 star recruits. So what that telling you, 5 star players are to pre madonas. Alot of high school sell those 5 star recruits and the big evaluaters such as espn:etc… fall for it. You know what I do, I go by the eye test, that why NFL teams like Pittsburg and New England always in the Champoinship. Trucst me on this Bennet probaly won’t get dradt high, but he will play a decade for some NFL Team. Look at Massiqua

Look. Isaiah C. said last year that although he had a lot of natural talent, he wasn’t in love with football. The kid is a natural but he’s admitted he can take it or leave it. Seems a waste to us but that’s his choice and if he’s not looking to make a living out of it, so what. None of our business. Every decision in life is not based on the mighty dollar. If he likes to play the game but can take it or leave it, good for him.

The only thing we can guage about this Dawg team, is that we are 3-0. I just hope we get to 4-0. Vandy will be equally motivated, and will battle for 4 quarters. If they are able to pressure Murray, we will be in for a long night. Bobo better be prepared for that – practice screen passes and draws. By the way, I wonder why we don’t use the shovel pass – we did a good bit with Greene and Stafford.
Anyway, Vandy gave SC all they could handle. That should be enough to end talk of a blowout tomorrow night.

I think Vandy’s best gameplan is to show a lot of press man coverage and try to get a little pressure on the QB and bait us into throwing the ball deep. We might be successful and score a lot of points, but we might also punt the ball a lot and not have sustained drives with those low percenage throws and then hope that you can wear down our defense by running a lot of plays against them and get the game to the 4th quarter. Then maybe a turnover or big special teams play could make the difference.
Oh, and I would absolutely have a fake punt, onsides kick, or fake field goal practiced this week. Unless Samuel sheds 3 blockers again and blows it up, Vandy has a good chance to execute something like this.
I would try to induce Georgia to throw the deep ball OFTEN on 3rd and 3 or 3rd and 5 and try to get them in a low percentage throw and get my D off the field. It is a high risk strategy, to be sure. You have to try to get a little pressure and hope that Murray is having a mediocre day, but I sure wouldn’t let #3 beat me. I wouldn’t want to come up with a gameplan that involved baiting Georgia into handing it to #3 20-25 times as that is the surest way for Vandy to lose.

The best part of the story is the coaches recognition of his talent regardless of where the “system” had him rated. Sometimes the “star” system feeds on itself and some of the folks on top end up to be “ringers.” Years ago Georgia native, Morgan Hout, at Liberty University, had a knack for chosing players. During his time there he put more players into the pros than did most SEC schools. Most were not on anyone’s radar but his. So, well played UGA staff. It’s called doing your homework.

Flat Tire, Bama has gave up 8 sacks, 6 against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, I’m not sold on their O-line pushing anyone around, those top ten teams they played were not as good as everyone thought, Michigan barely beat Air Force, and Arkansas lost to La.-Monroe and was without their QB in the Bama game, the jury is still out on how good Bama really is, but that’s just my opinion.

I agree and I sincerely believe the comments from the pessimist will die down for 2 reasons:
- we will see a fired up Dawg team take on a good Vandy team and beat them handily.
- I know most of you will blast me for this, but I have a hunch that Missouri will kick SC around on SC’s home field…..and possibly win the game.
Missouri has done nothing to indicate they are not a “top 20″ team so I believe they are primed to deliver an upset. P.S. UGa and Missouri made a lot of mistakes when they played….probably due to all the pressure surrounding that game. If my hero Richard Samuel doesn’t make that huge play on the fake punt there could have been a big difference in the outcome. Go Dawgs!!!

Sometimes you have good quality receiver(s) and a so-so QB (SC with Alshon Jeffrey). Sometimes the opposite is true. GA is blessed to have a very good QB and a deep bench of quality receivers. Even still, I think we are too pass happy. Obviously Richt and Bobo are going to lean that way since both were college QB’s. But, I will give credit when it’s due. Our running game is getting better every week. I’m happy with the production so far but its time to go to the next level. Gurley and Marshall need to show what they can do versus SEC defenses. Allot of that has to do with the Oline, I get that. I’m looking for a “break out” game. I think it’s coming too. This GA team (like many others in the past) will get better and better everty week. We have guys like Bennett stepping up and starting to get back key personell from suspensions. I think by seasons end we’ll be able to play with anyone. Yes, that includes the Alabama and LSU. Let’s beat Vandy’s ass and keep the momentum going. Go Dawgs!

Terry,
You may want to get your eyes checked, because Alabama is the team to beat this year. Although Michigan barely beat Air Force and Arkansas lost to Louisiana Monroe, Alabama straight dominated both of those teams and did not leave any shred of evidence to whom is the best team in the country. You have to score to win a game, and with Alabama not giving up any cheap points and hardly any points at all, it doesn’t matter to score 50 points a game, because a field goal beats zero points. Nick Saban will have his team ready for any game they play this year, so I definitely think your opinion on Alabama is way far off base.

Just speak the truth…. he wasn’t rated high because of skin color….A white WR? There are plenty that have better hands and can run circles and routes around many other WR’s and DB’s out there. Too much credence given to stupid 40 yard dash times in football. How many defenders are in front of a guy running a 40 yard dash on a track? None. Don’t get me wrong, speed is a great and much needed asset, but as coach Richt said “game speed” is better.

First point: Something I have noticed watching Murray closely. A couple of years ago, he really just trusted Green. Over the last couple of years he has developed a bond of trust with most of these guys; he knows them well. Bennett dropped one (very atypically) in the Mizzou game, and the camera caught Murray saying, “Come on Mike!” He was genuinely shocked that Mike didn’t catch it because he is Mr. Reliable on the tough catches. I think that bodes very well for the year. Second point: I hope he keeps using his TEs and JSW. SW is downright dangerous looking when he puts it in gear. I want to see that young man get some more touches. Go Dawgs!

With the wide receiver position and the running backs being better than we thought they would be (after hearing that IC would no longer be a Dawg)… is this one of the best Georgia teams of the last 20 years on paper?
It certainly seems to be when you consider the combination strength of roster and weakness of schedule. The 08 team had a better offense, Stafford, Moreno, Mo Mass, and a rookie AJ Green and a pretty good OL. The problem with that team was the the defense was very weak and the schedule included both LSU and AL in the regular season as well as a road trip to ASU.
I’d take the current team to do something special given the problems on the 08 teams D and extremely tough schedule that team faced.
How ’bout the 05 Dawgs? They won the SEC, but lost 3 very close games that year to FL, Auburn, and WV in the Bowl game. Very talented team, but I’d probably take this year’s version as well.
How ’bout the 02 Dawgs. They won the SEC and lost just once getting edged out by Florida. I’d take that teams talent over this one, but that team also played 6 ranked teams in addition to unranked SC and Clemson.
My point is that this season is an unusually good opportunity for the Dawgs to do something special. 9-10 NFL prospects starting on defense, 3 good running backs, an experienced QB that can throw the ball AND has some athletic ability, a talented and VERY deep receiving core, and hopefully and improving offensive line.
There is a lot of pressure on the this staff to do something special with this opportunity, as there should be.

@ Flat Tire:
Proper position for proofreading a term paper is in the standing position. Only a lazy GT troll would “sit and proofread” a term paper!!!
Quick response huh???? My post you responded to was sent at 7:46 am and your response at 1:30 pm!!!
What Time Zone are you in????
Nother thang!!!!!!!!!!! The “dont”(don’t) in the 2nd paragraph and the “cause”(because) in the 3rd paragraph cry out for correction!!!!!!!!!!!
I noticed you only mention “flunking English” in your last sentence(actually it is hard to tell where your sentences begin and end) while defending your barely legit writing skills. Does that mean you are admitting that you flunked Spelling???
Nother thang!!! I checked back through June of 2012 and found that approximately 58.74% used correct spelling puntuation.
You were close but no cigar!!! Just another small flash of brilliance on your part!!!!!!!!
I love you man and hope that we can pull the Dawgs through tonight!!!
If you have read this far I want to apologize for my written abuse to you. I’m just playing with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
