Notebook: Georgia’s Cornelius Washington likes ‘a good confrontation’

By RYAN BLACK
Special to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

ATHENS — While Georgia and Vanderbilt exchanged heated words on the field following last season’s game in Nashville, UGA’s Cornelius Washington was nowhere to be found.

Serving a two-game suspension due to a DUI arrest, he was at home watching on television. A year later, he rues not having been in the middle of the action.

“I like a good confrontation and that seems like one I would have enjoyed being a part of,” the senior outside linebacker said Monday.

Washington also took a different tack than most of his teammates did two weeks ago. Unlike the fallout from Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson’s “old man football” comment — where Georgia refused to fire back — Washington tackled this week’s popular topic head-on.

“I think it’s something we do care about,” he said of the contentious tone of last year’s meeting. “It’s a pride thing. It’s a competitive thing. When somebody comes out and challenges you like that and you have those kinds of things go on, you go through the week with a little edge, a little chip on your shoulder. You go into the game trying to knock somebody’s block off.”

For his part, Vanderbilt coach James Franklin jokingly addressed last year’s face-to-face with Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on Monday, quipping their families “went on vacation together” to Disney World. Franklin went on to praise Grantham and his unit.

“His defense plays hard and flies around,” he said. “They’re passionate about what they do and we’re passionate about what we do. It’s nothing more than that.”

LeMay: ‘No excuse’ for mistakes

Christian LeMay scored his first touchdown as a Bulldog Saturday. The score was the last thing on his mind the rest of the weekend, though.

Instead, a fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown against the backup quarterback dominated his thought process.

“I couldn’t wait to get back out here and get back to work and get that off my mind,” said LeMay, a redshirt freshman. “When you’re trying to be great, the good things are overshadowed by the bad things. When you’re trying to get to that level, you’ve got to make as little mistakes as possible and those were big mistakes I shouldn’t be making at this point in my career. There’s really no excuse for it.”

Following the interception, LeMay was pulled on the next drive in favor of Parker Welch. Though he admitted “you never want to get yanked,” he understood why the decision was made.

He also understands he has to redeem himself in the eyes of the people determining his playing time.

“The coaches don’t trust you as much, so you’ve just got to go back to work and earn their trust back,” he said.

Injury report

Jarvis Jones (groin) was limited in practice on Monday, but was not listed as “no-contact.” Fellow linebackers Josh Dawson (shoulder sprain) and Washington (hamstring) joined Jones, listed in a “limited” capacity. On offense, wide receiver Rantavious Wooten was limited due to a knee contusion while offensive lineman Watt Dantzler continues to battle an ankle sprain, which precluded him from taking part in contact drills.

I hope they figure out how to practice with that little extra edge every week for the rest of the season. I think a lot of the defensive woes will be taken care of with the return of Ogletree. He’s a bigger game changer than anyone except Jarvis on defense.

Biff – UGA’s athletic department does not rely on state funds. This makes the athletic department immune from the budget cuts passed down by the legislature, unlike the rest of the university. Don’t hate. Football makes a ton of money for UGA and the economic impact for the university, Athens and Georgia is tremendous.

I think LeMay will be outstanding. All he needs is to stay in a while and get a rhythm going and then his natural instincts will take over his nerves. He is uber-talented folks. He is like an “over-wound” watch ,just a little too tight. If Aaron got hurt, I believe Christain would settle-in and make us proud. Leave Hutson to his red-shirt. We don’t have a QB controversy…

LeMay may be great or he may not. However, it’s hard to make a judgment based on very limited opportunities. He needs more playing time to get his feet under him. Practice never is enough when trying to develop players. They need to be in game situations and be given the opportunity to perform under that pressure. Look at the Florida QB. He has improved tremendously in just two games as a starter. You can see his confidence level grow during the game.

We didn’t have any semblance of a running game last year against Vandy. In true Bobo form, it was all on Aaron Murray. We’d struggle against Grayson High School playing like that. The guy that had the most carries against Vandy last year is now playing special teams. This year we at least have some talented running backs to take the load off, although Bobo undoubtedly remains clueless on how to properly use them. I think we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg on Gurley and Marshall. We’re not the same team. They’re the same old Vandy. This one should get ugly if we play to our potential. Key word SHOULD.

“Why do you say Bobo has been clueless in how to use our RBs this year? examples?”

Missouri game. 10 carries for Gurley. They couldn’t tackle him and had no answer for his talent. 10 CARRIES. Even if it was just some boring 2 or 3 yard run, which Bobo apparently thinks is a mortal sin, he knocked somebodies’ azz in the dirt and made them wish they were never born. That has a funny way of demoralizing a defense. Meanwhile, our defense is sucking wind because the offense can’t stay on the field. It was classic Mike Bobo football. Thank God we have guys like Jarvis Jones to bail him out. I hope it keeps up but I have my doubts.

I was quite pleased with LeMay on saturday night. Yeah, he made mistakes, but that was his first extended action in a few years. And, he was running real plays not just straight hand-offs up the middle. A QB has to learn to deal with mistakes and continue to perform. He showed ALOT of talent, mentally and physically. His performance really has me feeling much better about being able to keep the red-shirt on Mason for this entire year.

Wow! where to start? 90% of that post was pure hyperbole, so I’ll just say.

The fact is Bobo has done a good job rotating our back, and most folks can clearly see that. You just aren’t looking at it objectively.

FWIW, take out Gurley big run late in the game and he had about a 2 yrd average. Ken Malcome actually had a much better game in terms of solid, “boring,” move the pile, rushing attempt. Something I believe Coach Bobo likes. “thinks is a mortal sin” is completely silly and without any merit.

Ken Malcome is also much more mature physically. Keith Marshall offers plenty, and needs reps. Todd Gurley is a freshman who has been training for the rigors of college football for a couple of months. Why you would want to take our most promising star at RB and ensure he doesn’t make the 7th game in his first year is beyond me.

Good Job Coach Bobo.

C. LeMay was just awful. He has not played football since his junior year of HS. He needs 2 more years of back up work. To run LeMay as the # 2 QB is trouble. Huton Mason IS A SEC caliber QB and he set passing records while at Lassiter playing BIG BOY AAAAA ball. LeMay played in NC, which is very questionable, for long time UGA QB observers, with Jamie Harris and Jumping Joe Cox and now …………..Christian LeMay.

If Murray goes down and with LeMay has awful as he is, UGA may not win a game down the stretch, if we call on him. I was badly disappointed in LeMay.

I’m not convinced Gurley is ready for 30 totes a game or that he even wants to. Georgia has a luxury now we’ve haven’t had in a number of years. That is running back by committee and ability to deliver a bruising running attack with constant and consistent fresh legs.

No doubt Gurley has the ability to carry it that much but, it doesn’t make sense when he doesn’t have to. Marshall is going to be a great one. He just didn’t develop as early. Malcome is always good for a few yards.

Nobody has been a louder critic of Bobo in the last 5 years than I. I’ve got to say, I’ve seen nothing wrong with the offensive production or performance this year. He’s keeping it mixed up and balanced. Sure there has been execution and other mistakes but those should clean up with more experience as the year wears on. So far Bobo has been doing a fantastic job

Dawgfan – what would your suggestion for improvement be? Talk about clueless!

Running back by committee

September 18th, 2012
10:23 am

I too buy into my man Ken ( BOO) Malcome being a top notch, SEC running back. For the SEC, he IS READy to pound it up the middle, which is his style. If he keeps pounding it, one of them will break for a 25 yd run. He is excellent.

I also love the idea of rotating fresh backs in and out. Yes sir, LSU and Bama do that and they know HOW to win BIG. We need to get Keith Marshall to bust one nice long one outside for 45 yards and allow Ken to bust it up the middle and then boom, there goes Todd Gurley. I like this.

Those of you that do not like this 3 or 4 back plan, think back to the end of 2011, when all we had was Harton and Karumpolis and Carlton Thomas, averaging 1 yard per carry. Please. NO dispresepct intended to Karumpolis or Harton.

Now UGA has a stable of blue blood running backs for the first time in a long while. Let us keep them FRESH !!!

You also haven’t seen us play somebody like Bama, LSU, South Carolina or Florida. We’ll see if Bobo is so brilliant in those games. His track record in that department is less than stellar.

I’m sorry if I’m not getting all excited over flashy stats against Buffalo, Missouri and Florida Atlantic. We’ve seen this sort of thing before. We lit up the score board against New Mexico State last year. I remember a game against Troy a few years ago where the record book was re-written. Big hairy freaking deal people. Unfortunately, we don’t play in the Sun Belt. If we did I’d be more the comfortable with Mike Bobo as our offensive coordinator. He’d be among his peers.

I’m not thrilled about the idea of Lemay having to come in for real action that matters. (although I am not sure that woudl be the plan anyway) but I do wonder if he had the full compliment of the first team offence, and not expected to “win” in on his own, if he wouldnt be ok.

As far as looking awful on the whole: he came in and drove it down for a TD, and looked pretty good on the drive. Then He made a poor throw that ended that drive before it started. Then he came back in and was told to eat it 3 times. Not sure awful, is fair.

“Dawgfan – what would your suggestion for improvement be?”

A “run first” attitude instead of a “run to keep them honest” attitude. A commitment to a physical running game. Fewer down field bombs and more runs between the tackles. Fewer dumb throws by our quarterbacks. You see, when your QB is throwing the ball 30-40 times per game like Bobo loves to do, you’re going to have more interceptions. Its just statistics and math. You don’t have to be a coach to figure that one out.

Thanks for reading.

Biff: Coaches have contracts that include their compensation. The new, replacement contracts only changed when the money is paid. Prior contracts including longevity bonuses, which are now paid when earned, rather than paid out at a later date. It’s cleaner and allows the coaches immediate access to money they have already earned. It also avoids people retiring in position in an attempt to earn the bonus later.

It’s never good news when people lose their jobs but these issues are not related in any way, shape or form. Different funding sources, budgets, etc.

Back to football. Gurley and Marshall had a plan to come to Georgia and share the load at tailback. It keeps them both fresh and is better for the team in the long run if they both produce and share the load. Also, as the season rolls on, Bobo may find that one is better in particular situations but we are only two exhibition and one real game into their freshman seasons. Let’s see what they can do.

From the “for what it’s worth” department. Bama and LSU’s stats are being accumulated from the same level of competition that Georgia’s is. They haven’t played each other yet. Arkansas is a bust and Michigan was apparently all hype. 75-0 skunks by UGA is unrealistic and really unimportant. You’ll see Mizzou against SC this week and you’ll find they are a good team. Bobo and Richt actually made solid halftime adjustments against Mizzou. When is the last time we could say that? Maybe Florida last eyar but not as good as this game.

SC and Mizzou both might play backup QB’s. SC can’t run the ball but they also have yet to give up a red zone TD in 2012. If Franklin sits, Mizzou won’t win

I would tend to agree with you but, time will tell. Mizzou had a decent defense. SC might have a better one but, Mizzou has a better offense. What tips the scale in my mind is James Franklin the better more experienced QB should give Mizzou the winning edge.

I too have been a big critic of Bobo’s play calling in the past. Other than one series where he threw instead of running after our backs were getting 8 yards a carry and the drive ended, I have been really impressed so far this year with Bobo. No offensive Coordinator will be perfect and Bobo will make some mistakes in the future but as long as continues with what he is currently doing he will not get out coached liked he has in the past. I hate for us to lose a game because we were out coached and not out played because of the play calling.

Also I agree that we should be running all three of our Tailback’s. Yes we could run Gurley 25 or 30 times a game but he will get tired by the 4TH quarter physically and it has been proven that a running back is more susceptible to tear something or to pull something when his muscles are fatigued.
I predicted that Lattimore was going to get hurt because Spurrier was forced to over use him. Fresh leg in the fourth quarter in the SEC are worth their weight in gold as we found out in the SEC Championship game last year.

I also like the way Mark Richt has started playing a lot of his Freshmen to get them game experience. They are all making mistakes but they are getting better. Grantham will have to replace most of the defense next year and a lot of their replacements are now playing , a lot.
Commings made a few mistakes last week in the first half but looked better in the second half. It would be great if President Adams would let Rambo and Ogletree play this week so they could get up to speed against Vanderbilt instead of Tennessee. As for major cities; Michigan does well in the midst of that dump Detroit Pittsburg used to do really well but even in hard times they fill double what Tech does for most of their games

and 95% of the major cities in the northeast are pro team minded fans and they fill their stadiums.

The southeast is a college fanbase always has been; As for the west coast there is USC and thats about it and they fill their stadium all the time in LA

If Richt and Co take care of business the next 2 Saturdays they will get some notice, and will be favored in the rest of our games (SC may be pick-em). It is on Richt to get this team to truly, for once, “finish the drill.” That, to me means, win every game that we should win, something Richt has yet to do in a season.

I’m hoping that the return of Rambo and Ogletree (and Jarvis Jones) will lead to inspired play by the D. We know what the offense is capable of, as long as Murray is protected.

Dawg fan how can honestly say that Bobo has no clue how to use our backs. We have scored over 40 points in all of our games in a slower paced offense. I used to hate bobo bc he would try to run Carlton Thomas up the middle. Not bc he didn’t run the ball enough. He has 3 backs that share the load fairly evenly. AND, this is a big AND, as good as our running backs are, our passing threat is even greater. We have 6 receivers that would play significantly if not start on every other college team. There is no defense in the country that can cover every single one of our receivers all game long. It all comes down to our o line busting up holes and protecting our qb. Our running backs are great but in the system that UGA runs we prob will not have a heir an style running back bc we share the load so much.
