ATHENS — While Georgia and Vanderbilt exchanged heated words on the field following last season’s game in Nashville, UGA’s Cornelius Washington was nowhere to be found.
Serving a two-game suspension due to a DUI arrest, he was at home watching on television. A year later, he rues not having been in the middle of the action.
“I like a good confrontation and that seems like one I would have enjoyed being a part of,” the senior outside linebacker said Monday.
Washington also took a different tack than most of his teammates did two weeks ago. Unlike the fallout from Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson’s “old man football” comment — where Georgia refused to fire back — Washington tackled this week’s popular topic head-on.
“I think it’s something we do care about,” he said of the contentious tone of last year’s meeting. “It’s a pride thing. It’s a competitive thing. When somebody comes out and challenges you like that and you have those kinds of things go on, you go through the week with a little edge, a little chip on your shoulder. You go into the game trying to knock somebody’s block off.”
For his part, Vanderbilt coach James Franklin jokingly addressed last year’s face-to-face with Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on Monday, quipping their families “went on vacation together” to Disney World. Franklin went on to praise Grantham and his unit.
“His defense plays hard and flies around,” he said. “They’re passionate about what they do and we’re passionate about what we do. It’s nothing more than that.”
LeMay: ‘No excuse’ for mistakes
Christian LeMay scored his first touchdown as a Bulldog Saturday. The score was the last thing on his mind the rest of the weekend, though.
Instead, a fumble and an interception returned for a touchdown against the backup quarterback dominated his thought process.
“I couldn’t wait to get back out here and get back to work and get that off my mind,” said LeMay, a redshirt freshman. “When you’re trying to be great, the good things are overshadowed by the bad things. When you’re trying to get to that level, you’ve got to make as little mistakes as possible and those were big mistakes I shouldn’t be making at this point in my career. There’s really no excuse for it.”
Following the interception, LeMay was pulled on the next drive in favor of Parker Welch. Though he admitted “you never want to get yanked,” he understood why the decision was made.
He also understands he has to redeem himself in the eyes of the people determining his playing time.
“The coaches don’t trust you as much, so you’ve just got to go back to work and earn their trust back,” he said.
Injury report
Jarvis Jones (groin) was limited in practice on Monday, but was not listed as “no-contact.” Fellow linebackers Josh Dawson (shoulder sprain) and Washington (hamstring) joined Jones, listed in a “limited” capacity. On offense, wide receiver Rantavious Wooten was limited due to a knee contusion while offensive lineman Watt Dantzler continues to battle an ankle sprain, which precluded him from taking part in contact drills.

you morons
Most of the constructive criticism that you read here are from people who know that even the best players can NEVER think they are so good that there is not room for improvement.
I was always a fan of Jarvis Jones but he became one of my favorite Georgia player of all times when he decided not go Pro last year because he said that he needed to learn more from Grantham before going Pro. He would have been a first round or high second round draft choice making millions . You have got to admire that humble attitude.
I hope you do not think that Georgia has played flawless football this year. There is always room to improve.

Yeah, Auburn only went 14-0 one year with him as their OC and then was near the top of the SEC in every offensive category every other year. Why would anyone be in love with him? Bobo has proven that we can roll up massive amounts of yards against Buffalo and Florida Atlantic. He’s a genius.

Discount Buffalo and FAU all you wish. We’re 3-0. In the 3rd week of the season that is the only stat that really matters isn’t it?Whether Bobo’s offense tack on 2oo yards or 700 yards isn’t going to do a damn thing for world peace or feed any hungry babies in Africa. It’s a game and only a game. It’s a sport for us bloggers only in our minds. Feed good about your team. You have nothing to belly ache about at this juncture. I find it interesting too since you and Miami are the only major football programs in the Southeast that cant fill a stadium but then again Miami was irrelevant until 83 so I understand why they dont have a fanbase since the program was almost given up anyway
As for major cities; Michigan does well in the midst of that dump Detroit Pittsburg used to do really well but even in hard times they fill double what Tech does for most of their games
and 95% of the major cities in the northeast are pro team minded fans and they fill their stadiums.
The southeast is a college fanbase always has been; As for the west coast there is USC and thats about it and they fill their stadium all the time in LA
So again Bob
I find it interesting the Falcons and UGA can fill a stadium yet Tech cant fill a high school stadium

I am watching the “College Experts” on tv and I cannot believe the reluctance to talk about Georgia? They are not impressed with Georgia, It’s Alabama, LSU, Oregon, Florida State and Florida!
Georgia stay focused on one game at a time and believe in yourself and your team, everything else will take care of itself and the h_ _ _ with the so called EXPERTS and Others.
I was impressed with the offense in the game and the way the defense bounced back.
As far as the play calling by Coach Bobo and the leadership that Coach Grantham displays by not accepting anything less than 100% is great. I love what Georgia is doing and GO DAWGS!

UGA # 3 in the SEC in rushing offense
UGA # 2 in the SEC in passing offense
UGA # 1 in the SEC overall offense
Shout out to Mike Bobo… showing offensive innovation (Gurley’s 34 yd TD run was out of the Pistol offensive formation) and the ability to adjust during game time…. this offense is going to be scary wicked!

The University of Michigan isn’t in Detroit and you may want to check your numbers for Pittsburgh. According to the NCAA they averaged 46,003 per game last year. GT averaged 48,232 per game. Unless you live in some weird universe where 48,232 x 2 = 46,003 you might be off a little.

Nope. We are going straight to pee wee football coaches after this. Or we might just buy NCAA 13 and set the automatic play calling. Whatever plays the game calls we will run them in the actual game.

Borges had that leftover 2003(supposed to have been #1) team handed to him. And did well with them. 2 seasons later he resigned before the bowl game because Auburn’s offense could even score TDs anymore. I’m surprised you didn’t see that when you looked up who Al Borges even was.
I am sure there were multiple factors, but the point is, that while sports fans always want that other team’s guy, it’s never long before their fans are more than willing to hand him over.

“They are not impressed with Georgia…”
*******************************
jaxel49, they’re probably playing wait-and-see, for now. This isn’t the first time we’ve come into a season with big expectations by the national sports media.
If Richt and Co take care of business the next 2 Saturdays they will get some notice, and will be favored in the rest of our games (SC may be pick-em). It is on Richt to get this team to truly, for once, “finish the drill.” That, to me means, win every game that we should win, something Richt has yet to do in a season.
I’m hoping that the return of Rambo and Ogletree (and Jarvis Jones) will lead to inspired play by the D. We know what the offense is capable of, as long as Murray is protected.

The other thing about Al Borges is that he had been an OC for 18 yrs before that Auburn job.
I have said many time, the problem with Coach Bobo (and Also Coach Richt’s) employment at Georgia is that we have had to pay for the learning curve. So many of the things that have occured have been the first time they have dealt with it.
But at THIS point, we have an investment at stake. These guys are just now entering the points in thier careers that so many of the other coaches that we love to compare them to, first started have success.

with all the “learning while on the job” richt has endured, the one thing that i think richt has yet to really conquer is timeouts. it’s rare to ever see UGA w/ 2 timeouts or more with under 2 min to go in a half or game. couple games of late come to mind where the team needed them
