No regrets for Todd Grantham: Vandy game ‘was heated, but no big deal’

Georgia defensive end Ray Drew (47) holds back defensive coordinator Todd Grantham from going after Vanderbilt coach James Franklin at the end of last year's game in Nashville.

GEORGIA FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

ATHENS -- Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham on Tuesday expressed no remorse over his actions at the end of last year’s Vanderbilt game, nor is he dreading how those events might affect this year’s contest at Sanford Stadium.

“No,” Grantham stated flatly when asked if he regretted his actions. “I understood what all was happening. Like I said, everybody’s competitive, it’s heated out there. It’s really not a big deal. I guess that’s football.”

Grantham and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin had to be separated by players and referees as they engaged in a nose-to-nose shouting match shortly after the Bulldogs’ 33-28 win in Nashville last October. The two teams meet for the first time since on Saturday at 7:50 p.m.

Grantham said that it’s important that the Bulldogs focus on their assignments for stopping Vanderbilt’s offense and not get caught up in any kind of emotional retaliation.

“It’s us against them,” Grantham said. “It’s an SEC game. You know, anytime you play at home in the SEC you need to win those games to get where we want to go and do what we want to do. It’s the most important game because it’s the next game. That’s the focus you need to take because each week is tough. There are good teams in this league and you have to make sure you’re prepared every week. So we’ve got to be prepared.”

Grantham said he didn’t apologize to Franklin or Vanderbilt after last year’s game and he doesn’t plan to before Saturday’s contest. He plans to conduct himself as he always does.

“To be honest, I haven’t thought about it or  worried about it,” he said. “I know our players work really hard and  they prepare. I want to make sure they succeed. We’re going to work hard to make sure we’re prepared every Saturday we go on the field.

“We’re all competitive people. Things happen and you learn from it and move on. We want to make sure we keep the focus on the game and play a game on Saturday.”

Grantham said he hasn’t crossed paths with Franklin anywhere since last year’s game. But he insisted he doesn’t have a problem with the Commodores’ coach.

“Hey, he’s a good coach, he’s done a good job,” Grantham said. “They’re working hard to be competitive. They had a big game on Saturday. It’s an SEC game so it’s a big game for us, a big game for them. So we’ve got to make sure we prepare to get ready to win a physical game.”

As for Franklin’s joke that they’d vacationed together and drank Mai-Tais in the pool, Grantham indicated he likely wouldn’t be drinking a Mai-Tai.

“But I’m flexible,” he said with a grin.

Jarvis Jones says he’ll play

Jarvis Jones said he’s still bothered by the groin injury that kept him out of the Florida Atlantic game this past Saturday and he’s listed on Georgia’s daily injury-illness report as “limited.” But you wouldn’t know it on the practice field as Jones is not dressed in the traditional green jersey signifying a players’ injured status and he said you definitely won’t know it on Saturday as he intends to start at outside linebacker and play against Vanderbilt.

“I don’t want that green jersey; they can’t make me wear it,” Jones joked following the Bulldogs’ practice Tuesday night. “I’m fine. I’ve been treating it ever since it happened. I’m just getting back in the groove.”

Of course, that’s what he said last week. Asked again if there was a chance he might not play Saturday, Jones reiterated, “I’m gonna play this week.”

More offense ahead for Mitchell

Malcolm Mitchell, perhaps Georgia’s most explosive offensive threat as a freshman last season, has been almost exclusively a defensive player since the spring. Look for that to change, coach Mark Richt said Tuesday.

Mitchell, who played his first two offensive snaps of the season in last week’s victory over Florida Atlantic, catching a 49-yard pass on the first, will remain available at cornerback but reengage at wide receiver, Richt said.

“Malcolm will definitely stay with the defense as far as being ready to play. I imagine he will still play [defense],” Richt said. “His offensive reps will increase, and he’ll probably start to spend some meeting time with the offense as well.

“I’m thinking about trying to find a way to split time with him if he can manage it. We think it can work for us. He’s a guy who I think is in good enough condition. I know he’s smart enough to understand what’s going on on both sides of the ball with the experience he’s had.”

The return of cornerback-safety Sanders Commings from suspension last week and the return of suspended safety Bacarri Rambo by next week will somewhat alleviate depth concerns in the secondary.

Offense and defense aren’t the extent of Georgia’s plans for Mitchell.

“We need him on special teams, too,” Richt said. “He’s going to play offense, defense and special teams off and on for the rest of the year, I would think.”

Vandy QB situation

Vandy’s Franklin called it “a huge advantage” that Georgia has only one game of tape on which to watch quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels direct the Vandy offense. Franklin hasn’t committed publicly on a QB starter against Georgia, but Carta-Samuels — a transfer from Wyoming — is No. 1 on the depth chart after surprisingly starting ahead of Jordan Rodgers in last week’s 58-0 win over Presbyterian.

“He played well,” Richt said. “He didn’t have to really run the ball that often and wasn’t pressured much. He did drop back and throw the ball well. It looked like he ran the system well. … They didn’t change what they would have been doing schematically a lot.”

Richt said he “can only assume” Carta-Samuels will start Saturday.

Etc… .

Offensive linemen Dallas Lee and Watts Dantzler, both of whom have left ankle sprains, ran on the sidelines in green jerseys as their teammates practiced Tuesday. Their status remains questionable. In the meantime, the Bulldogs continued to work with Mark Beard at left tackle and regular left tackle Kenarious Gates at Lee’s left-guard position. . . . . Quarterback Aaron Murray became the 14th Georgia player — the most in Division I — to be nominated to the Allstate/AFCA Good Works team. Murray was one of 11 players in this year’s group. They are chosen by a national panel to based on their service to others and “off-the-field positive impact.”

Let’s face it, Franklin’s blustering backfired on him, and there was no reason for Grantham to be congenial. Franklin was so busy focusing on posturing for his team that he forgot basic coaching decorum. You don’t go chastise another coach after a game. Now that the amateur hour is over, he’ll be better able to handle his duties more professionally.

Georgia has more players than any other school that helps others and have positive off field impacts. While this is no surprise to the Bulldog faithful it sure does go against the image the ajc and all the hate fueled idiots that live on their blogs try and perpetuate.

I like seeing what a fired up coach can do for a team. Look at what the Falcons are doing this year with some new blood in the coaching ranks.
If we don’t see something different this week, I hope we will see some changes in the Offensive Coordinator. There’s probably an OC in the NFL who would like to settle down in a great college town like Athens. We certainly found a good DC in Grantham.

Evidently, Todd Grantham has decided to follow in the footsteps of Edith Piaf. The French chanteuse, nicknamed “The Little Sparrow,” famously warbled, “Je ne regrette rien.” That translates as “I regret nothing.” Interesting that Grantham would, in effect, be singing the same tune these days.

@Gtbob

It is a hoot to read your post. I understand it does not matter to you if a Dog fan bad mouths Tech, I see that in your replies, so I just wish they would quit responding in such a manner. I am a UGA alumnus and I do not despise Tech as some of our fans do. I always wish them well except for one saturday in Nov., and even then I wish no one to get hurt on either side. I can only assume that your replies anti UGA are to get people angry so they come back on you in some way. I get this is how you get your amusement, which I could care less, whatever rocks your boat I guess. I would hope eventually most would figure this out and simply not respond to you but rather read your post and just move on. I am not sure if you watch other college games and see different coaches or the interactions between sidelines, but i assure you What CTG last year was rather mild for a DC. I was in college and had the pleasure of being around and speaking to Erk Russell everyday. If your old enough to go that far back, then you would see by standards, Grantham is a wuss compared to Russell and he helped mold MANY a men. Anger is a part of football, and if you are naive enough to think coaches are responsible for players action OFF the field, then we should blame your father for raising you to create rabble rousing correct?

His comments are classless, an show his immaturity. How will he expect to get a HC job somewhere if he is too stubborn to face the fact he embarrassed himself, his players, his coach, his AD and the entire University with his antics over the course of his tenure at UGA?

I know some of you dumb redneck UGA fans will scream, call me names and on and on, but look around the league and you will not see another HC, Coordinator, or Asst who has made a third of the bonehead exposures as TG has in his short duration at UGA. That is fine, I guess his behavior has a reflection on his players and their continued personal foul penalities they commit, the crimes they commit, and laws they break.

You must have never played any sport where there was a team involved. If you did , you sat the bench or your so called team wasn’t any good.
Todd Grantham earned more respect from his players because of what he did in the Vanderbilt game last year than most coaches get in a decade. He took up for one of his defensive back with unconditional love that has his players busting their rear end for him,now .
Maybe it wasn’t the classiest move on Grantham’s part but after Franklin jumped all over one of our players someone had to step in and say something. Coach Mark Richt certainly wasn’t going to show any support or emotions, it wasn’t his style. If Grantham had not done what he did I really don’t think a lot of the defensive players who decide to stay an extra year would have stayed. They also wouldn’t be showing how much they have bought into what Grantham is trying to teach, today. Lastly Georgia wouldn’t have signed some of the recruits they got in February 2012 or some of the recruit’s they have committed for 2013.What Grantham did was great and one of the proudest moments for a lot of the Georgia fans.
I don’t know if you are a Georgia fan or not but I do know that our defense has played under Grantham the closest we have come to what we use to get from Erk Russell and for that I am not going to say anything bad about Grantham. He get’s my full support.

A while back he also made a joke concerning his coaches wives. I guess that was considered classy by you as well. If he wants to try and be a comedian, let him join Spurrier’s staff and see if he can pick up a few pointers. Spurrier’s has been trying that for years and is now considered a bitter old man, with his constant complaining (His idea of a joke). I guess he found it amusing also when his center last year tried to deliberately take out the nose tackle of UGA with the deliberate and flagrant foul by blocking him behind his knees, and then giving the thumbs up to his coaches. Funny, I never heard him say anything about that. I guess he couldn’t come up with a joke to cover that.

kingdaddy, I think we’re well positioned for a good run but think coaching, or lack of, will be the key. We have the horses but can Richt and Bobo pick the right combinations to make it work. My concern is that in the big games we will need the “physical” running game first, with the passing game being secondary. Richt’s just not comfortable in that type game and we typically don’t do well.

I love how all the haters give Farnklin a total pass last year for what happened at Vandy, but say that Grantham is somehow a bad guy. I know I can’t change the haters minds, but I do post in an attempt to debate against revisionist history lessons from all the haters. There were alot of situations last year that lead to the confrontation at midfield between Franklin and Grantham. First, the Vandy coach had been and still is trying to install a new attitude in his team to behave like they bleong on an SEC field of play in football. (That should be commended in my opinion.) The Vandy players were talking just as much smack and pushing and shoving just as much as the Georgia players during the game. The Vandy sideline, Franklin included, was participating in the trash talking as well. The Vandy center clearly tried to take Geathers out of the game with a cut block behind the play and behind the knee. After the game Franklin was jawing with Williams and other Bulldog players and was clearly screaming at Grantham before Grantham responded in kind. Grantham got too hot, however, a head coach doesn’t approach the other team’s DC or any other coach on the opposing staff in an attempt to scold an opposing player. Franklin should have spoken to Richt and Richt only if he had a serious complaint. Franklin’s actions showed that he was angry and acting without restraint just as much as anyone else on the field that night. I don’t think anything that happened that night makes Franklin or anyone else @ Vandy a bad guy. It was just as Grantham described, “I understood what all was happening. Like I said, everybody’s competitive, it’s heated out there. It’s really not a big deal. I guess that’s football.”

Joey – In 2010 Auburn beat us pretty badly and gave really cheap shots that made our coaches and players “very angry”. Look what we did to them last year (and they beat SC later last year). Football is a VERY emotional game. I think Vanderbilt is better this year, but I also think we’ll beat them pretty badly because we have lots more talent and more emotion this year. They had emotion last year and will have it this year but we have more talent.

This whole thing has been portrayed as UGA the big bad bully picking on poor ole Vandy. Give me a freaking break. I decided Franklin was a punk when he publicly called out that recruit who backed off his commitment to Vandy. That was weak. Talk about being a bully. Did Franklin apologize for trashing the character of an 18 year old behind his back? I don’t recall it.

While I’m hoping for a blowout, I almost wish this was another close soul crushing loss for Vandy. That would hurt them even more.

UGA has Vandy at home. Vandy plays in the SEC East. This is UGA’s motivation. All of the who said what and to whom, does not matter. The teams involved in that post game activity in 2011 do not exist. They are gone.

For 2012, if UGA wants to win the SEC East, it starts on Saturday at home.

You would have to be more specific as to what you mean by team sports because what you said about Grantham and what he did doesn’t add up to anything that warrants such condemnation of him as a person or coach. I played plenty of team sports when I was younger and coaches like Grantham are revered unless your team is from a church affiliate.

Grantham has been at Georgia for a little over two complete years and the choke thing and Vanderbilt thing are the only two unprofessional things that you have seen from Grantham. The choke thing was because he had been coaching NFL spoiled rotten babies for 11 years and was use to giving as much as he had to take from grown men. He just needed a little guidance to remind him that college is all about teaching Values and football technique to kids trying to become men. You haven’t seen anything mean like that since. As much as I cringed when he did that I realized his background and gave him a free pass. Mark Richt straightened him out after that about the do’s and don’ts of college etiquette. He would not still be at Georgia if he had not listened to Richt.
The thing about Vanderbilt should have happened. Go ask every player on the team , especially the defensive players what they think of Grantham because of what he did.
I’m a graduate of UGA 1976 and I back and respect Grantham 100%.

Guys, Don’t be a blind homer. Let’s be reasonable and logical please.

UGA gave up at least 20points to Buffalo and FAU, 2 lower division teams. It’s not a one game aberration, it happened in both games. So you can reasonably assume UGA defense is not that good, and Vandy should be able to score 35 on UGA.

To UGA’s credit, they did score an average of 50points on the 2 cupcakes, but even 2nd tier division teams scored on them last year. The real question is how many UGA can score on Vandy.

For 3 quarters, UGA almost lost an un-ranked Mizzo team. Of course, Vandy is un-ranked either.

But the Mizzo game does tell us that UGA is no better than an un-ranked team in the 1st 3 quarter.

The real question becomes, how good is Vandy in the 4 quarter. SC game shows they are good.

BTW, unlike UGA giving up at least points with its 2 cupcakes, Vandy shut out their cupcake.

So, from my un-biased point of view, Vandy is better than UGA. The final score will be 35-34.

You UGA fans should have a good laugh if UGA can beat the better Vandy team this Saturday.

What he should have done is taken the issue to CMR like a responsible adult. SOOO Franklin got what he asked for. A confrontation from a coach defending his players from an immature classless crybaby coach who isn’t ready for primetime. Yes there were dangerous blocks and hits on both sides but for Franklin to call UGA players out for those hits and not bring up the fact that his players were illegally chop blocking proves he is a hypocrite and an amateur Coach Spurrier (Whiny crybaby).

Damn good responses, especially to the Single Digit IQ fools who apparently did not see the UGA/Vandy game last year and the followup by Franklin that started with Franklin jumping on Shawn Williams which is what brought CTG into it!!!!!!! Those S. D. IQ’s were joined by some of The AJC so-called Sports Writers
who apparently didn’t see all the game or the postgame activities. Actually Franklin and CTG DID NOT have to be separated because Franklin was well behind his State Patrol escorts the entire time. Go back and check the film!!!!

I got booted by one of those writers(I won;t use his name but his initials are Bill King) for pointing out errors and outright lies in AJC blogs. Almost a year later after I was reinstated BK booted me again for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON and if he denies it I challenge him to print my post for the world to see and judge for themselves!!!!!!!!!! The fact is, the kid he gave the choke sign to was a player, he is a coach( errrr…teacher) and is suppose to act like one instead of a baffoon. He is a coordinator and he should have gone to his HC and had him address the opposing team’s HC( Franklin) and moved on.

People keep giving Franklin a pass and I’m tired of it. There’s a reason Maryland gave Max Garcia a full release with the restriction that he couldn’t transfer to an ACC school (Maryland’s conference) or Vandy.

In 2009 Franklin was named Maryland’s Coach in waiting while Ralph Friedgen was still the head coach. A year later Franklin was accused of lobbying the administration to fire Friedgen and let Franklin take over. They did but then Franklin left for Vandy and started recruiting Maryland’s players to transfer. Class act.

If Franklin had an issue with a UGA player, he can pick up the phone and call Richt, not attack the player on the field after the game. What a classless act by a head coach. If it was my son on the field, I would want Grantham to take up for him. Otherwise, my son might be in jail and Franklin on a gurney.

But you have to play somebody with some “WOW Factor” in order to be able to jump some of these better teams, and giving up easy points to a Buffalo, FAU team with your first defense in the game shows some major holes that good teams will exploit…..enjoy beating those soft teams with half a stadium filled.( maybe 3/4 filled)

Dr. P, okay to disagree on that. No I didn’t see the Vandy/SC game. Yes I did see the Vandy/UGA game last year. It is a matter of playing down to an opponents level which has been our problem the past two to three years. AND part of the slow starts we have had in every game so far this year. I was proud to se the dawgs play a full 60 against Missouri, God knows how long it had been. So IF we want to consider ourselves a top 5 team, then yes, we should beat Vandy by 3 TD’s at least. Whether or not that is the case, well, that’s why we play the games. You don’t see Bama going into a game saying, “well we should play them close.” It’s all a mentality of winning and winning as big as possible.

I just see things that as they are, no sugar coating, no pampering, no homerism.

Grantham was wrong for what he did, he stepped over the line on both occasions and his attitude is reflective of his players and their on and off the field issues. He bullied Bobo to get one of his best players on defense and he is a constant bully who has not beaten anyone during his tenure as DC who ended the season ranked.

Not saying UGA is not good, I think they are. Probably better than 95% of the teams in the country, but they always seems to play down to other teams level and cannot play up to the level of the great teams when the pressure is on. They have some very self centered players who do not know what the word “Team” means. He had a good crying session after the 2009 game that amounted to nothing. If we are illegally blocking guys then it is up to the officials to make the call. It is not a hard penalty to spot and we rarely get called for it. Either we pay the officials a good bit of money to completely overlook it or we are making clean blocks almost all of the time. Which is it?

“It is not a hard penalty to spot”

That’s not true at all. Its very easy for the officials to miss all of your team’s cowardly blocks. They missed the one on Deangelo. You can’t take a guy’s legs out from behind like that but your guy got away with it. As for chop blocks in the interior of the line, that would be very easy to miss. Its very crowded and things are happening very quickly. I don’t even think Georgia Tech intentionally chop blocks necessarily. I think its simply a by product of all the legal cut blocking and CPJ simply doesn’t care as long as flags aren’t getting thrown.

Gotta love that. Its not cheating if you don’t get caught. And these clowns have the nerve to lecture everyone else about class and integrity. Unbelievable.

Vandy may have improved in attitude…but not in talent!!
USCe has a ton of issues..and dont know why ppl are giving them all the hype. Their front seven is a beast, but their oline, secondary, and QB are completely suspect.
Tenn has show flashes of potential, but half time adjustments, defensive gaps, and no running game will be issues.
UF has been the only team to show some improvement in areas.
Dawgs are still starting off slow in games. But we’re finally seeing in-game adjustments and new formations with the talent.
Mizzou is underrated..and is going to shock a few teams.
Everyone can complain about schedule, but thats not our fault other programs have fallen off the past few years. Remember, the SEC commission makes the schedule!! Blame them. Its not like the SEC west much better. LSU still a good team, but havent proven anything yet. Bama only team playing solid ball, but still looking beatable. The rest have shown nothing!!!

Sorry, I disagree. It is extremely easy to spot a defensive lineman who is being blocked by two players, one of which is diving at his knees. If a ref misses that call then they aren’t paying attention. Even with the griping from Beamer and others, GT rarely gets called for chop blocks.

Plenty of things in football are dangerous. That is the nature of the sport. It is still a legal blocking technique that is used often in college and the NFL. We know your team is inferior in every way, but I guess you do what you have to. Your line of thinking seems to be that everything that isn’t illegal is ok. So, let’s say you had a wife – you wouldn’t have any problem with someone else tapping it since that activity isn’t illegal, would you? Vandy new starting QB Carta-Samuels has a stronger and more accurate arm that Jordan Rogers; don’t underestimate Zack Stacy at running back and their 2 main WR options Chris Boyd and Jordan Mathews are both very solid SEC wide-outs who can play for any SEC team. If Vandy O-line plays well and UGA has a few turnovers or mental mistakes, it will be close late into the 4th qtr with the possibility of an upset. Go Dores !

It will not teach them any additional lesson since this is their last year. They will be gone in March 2013, 5 to 6 months from now. Beanster – the offensive play-calling & adjustments were awful by Vandy coaches. After the 1st 2 offensive possessions, it looked like Vandy would dominate. Then bad qb play by Jordan Rogers and surprisingly bad O-line play against a “lower” Big ten team spelled doom. After facing a very tough and physical Scarolina defensive line, it seemed that Vandy O-line would have played better. I was really surprised that CJF did not replace QB Jordan Rogers; not doing so likely cost the the game. The best that people keep saying about Rogers so far this year is that..”..he is Aaron Rogers Brother…” (Just sayin). Both losses (Scarolina & Nwestern) were very winnable games with perhaps better decisions at the QB position. The major area to watch early on Saturday is the Vandy O-line vs the UGA defensive line. If Carta-Samuels has a little time to throw; and if Vandy picks up the UGA blitz packages,it will be a very close game late into the 4t qtr. Go Dores !

We solved our problem of “not playing up to the better team’s level” .

We no longer schedule the “better teams”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brainiac….I know I got carried away. I was forced to tell a few white lies to save face. My emotions got the best of me. Best for me to stay off UGA related blogs. The only way I can get a knock in on UGA is through this blog. My team can never accomplish it

Of course the kid he gave the CHOKE sign to was a student. In order to play for most colleges one must be a student!!!!!!!

Wern’t no point in giving the CHOKE sign to a coach, official or fan. None of those were going to be doing the kicking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Definition of a illegal chop block is when the def lineman is already engaged and is doubled down low Vanderbilt did this because they couldnt block Kwame Geathers and John Jenkins. This was taught by the coaching staff at Vandy-tech also chop blocks but they have not blocked Jenkins and Geathers yet.Granthem will have them on point sat 35-7 UGA.

Welcome to the blog. To answer your question, we really don’t feel like you guys have a chance. We do expect our defense to shut down your guy no matter who plays QB. Georgia offense is waiting on a chance to tee it up on somebody.

Good luck to your guys (although, not too much)

Grantham is an idiot, therefore, he belongs on the coaching staff at UGA. Really? UGA will crush Vandy? Go take a look at how close these games have been over the past decades. I guess numbers don’t really matter to UGA “folk”…

Thanks ARdawg, thanks for the blog-support, you are probably right in that UGA will win by 7-10 points. I do think that Vandy has a chance though if for no other reason it is an SEC game and all the players get up for these ttype games. We all know that UGA has better players & depth at every position which justifies the number 5 national ranking. I just want to see a close competitive game. Don’t hate me for saying this, but its easy to root for Vandy in this game as the underdog given their academic requirements to get in and their focus on graduating their student athletes. Playing against the top half of SEC competition each Saturday is brutal. Vandy is likely 2 more recruiting classes ( and a 4 or 5 star QB) away from really competing with the upper half of the SEC. Go Dores !.
