A look at UGA’s next opponent: Vanderbilt

GEORGIA’S NEXT OPPONENT

Who: Vanderbilt

When: 7:45 p.m. Saturday

Where: Sanford Stadium, Athens

TV; radio: ESPN2; 750, 95.5

About Vanderbilt

Record: 1-2 (0-1 SEC)

Last meeting: In a game remembered for contentious play throughout and a confrontation between Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham afterward, UGA won 33-28 in Nashville on Oct. 15, 2011.

Offense: Austyn Carta-Samuels, a junior who transferred to Vanderbilt last year after two seasons as a starter at Wyoming, is listed as the No. 1 quarterback on this week’s depth chart. He surprisingly started over senior Jordan Rodgers in last week’s 58-0 rout of Presbyterian, completing 13 of 20 passes for 195 yards. Franklin said he won’t decide on his starting QB vs. Georgia until perhaps Thursday. … Senior tailback Zac Stacy has 2,260 career rushing yards, an average of 5.5 per carry. … Junior wide receiver Jordan Matthews has 18 catches for 276 yards in Vandy’s first three games, including eight for 147 in a season-opening 17-13 loss to South Carolina.

Defense: Vanderbilt lost four defensive standouts from last season’s team but ranks fifth in the SEC and 16th nationally in scoring defense, allowing an average of 13.3 points per game. … Vandy held Northwestern to two field goals through three quarters on Sept. 8 but gave up 17 points in the fourth quarter to lose 23-13. …  Senior cornerback Trey Wilson last week returned an interception 100 yards, his third career interception return for a touchdown. … Senior defensive tackle Rob Lohr has started 28 consecutive games.

Special teams: Senior Richard Kent is averaging 44.7 yards per punt this season. … Junior Carey Spear is 7-for-8 on field goals.

What you should know: Vanderbilt’s past five SEC losses, dating to the middle of last season, have been by six points or less. … Vandy hasn’t beaten a ranked opponent since 2008.

Coach: Franklin is in his second season at Vanderbilt, which is 7-9 (2-7 SEC) during his tenure.

Can’t see Vandy starting Carta-Samuels over Rodgers. The guy has never played against an SEC opponent. Looks like Franklin is playing mind games at this point. Dawgs by 40 in this one.

No you’re not Bob. Tech is a solid ACC program with a tricky offense and a decent coaching staff, all of which means you should be able to stay within 2 or 3 touchdowns of UGA. That’s a nice little moral victory to hang your hat on. No shame there Bob.

Vanderbilt would have beaten South Carolina (I believe) had the officials not made a terrible “no call” on pass interference. Vandy’s no pushover…

Vandy got spanked by Northwestern. Are you really worried about them? I predict UGA by at least 28.

Vandy always plays GA tough and most of their meetings the score has been close. GA either makes them look good or they just get up for the dawgs. Have to take the ‘Dores seriously otherwise they can surprise as was the case last season when they darn near won the game. You guys that think it’ll be a cakewalk will have a rude awakening.

Come on GTBob. Georgia Tech’s ability to “almost” beat quality opponents is well documented. You know this. Don’t sell you’re team short. I see another big moral victory for the Jackets this year in Athens.

The Vandy game is gonna be tougher than most want to realize. Franklin’s a good coach with good schemes and a very good D. Their lack of playmakers on offense holds them back more than anything.

And Franklin’s penchant for wanting to coach both teams doesn’t help. If he could focus on his own team and not the other (last year against us and then his rant about what Derek Dooley did in his OWN locker room after a game) he might be better off.

I think he’s playing the folks in Nashville anyway as he auditions for a better job, but I still say he’d be better off weeding his own garden and staying out of others’.

We heard this crap before the Missouri game, and now before the Vandy game. I am sure it will come up before the Tennessee, Auburn, and Kentucky games as well. Stop trying to build up the weak teams you play. Just go out and destroy them like you are supposed to.

It’s too bad that when we lose (which we will to Vandy), we can’t just say that we are overrated or admit that we aren’t that good.

Instead, we will just say, “Well this is what it’s like to play in the SEC every week” and will resort to chanting “SEC” and riding on Alabama/LSU’s coat tails the rest of the season.

I love that we are all delusional homers who went to Truett if at all.

Vandy takes a lot of cheap shots after an opposing player is down .Ask Justice Cunningham of SC. Too bad we had to duplicate it with UAB. The penalties should all be the same in any game. We will soon be playing Powder Puff football ,just sayin!

It’s easy for UGA fans to look down on Vandy and expect a 21 point blowout; I understand the UGA homers, though I totally disagree with that thinking. But truly rational football people do not expect a blow-out but a very competitive game. UGA should win by 7-10 pints but if they play down to the competition as UGA tends to do, then this could be close late into the 4th quarter. This is not a bad Vandy team; if they had made a few plays in the 1st 2 games (Scarolina & Nwestern) they would easily be 3-0. Vandy has much better depth and skill players than they have had in years past. The most obvious mismatch will be Vandys offensive line averaging about 280 lbs likely getting overpowered by the UGA defensive line. Expect a fight late into the 4th quarter. Go Dores !

Think if these guys keep building they could do great things! Love the attitude and all the players contributing thus far! Would love to see a complete game and a complete demolision of Vandy!!!

Vandy 27 UGA 24

Murray with 3 TD’s and 3 Int’s with the game winner returned for a TD. After the game Murray was interviewed and complained that Vandy cheated because he could not see over their DL.

Not going to be a blowout so don’t expect one. The “D” needs to get off to a better start. There are a couple of injuries on the UGA OL – Dallas Lee most important. The depth there is slim. The defense will have to be more consistent in this game for UGA to win. Georgia must be patient and rely on the running game and short passes to wear Vandy down in the 2nd half. Eliminate the turnovers (3 last week). Way to many penalties last week…… drive killers. UGA will not take Vandy lightly as they barely escaped last year. Vandy should have beat the Game Crocks. They are well coached and this will be close for three quarters plus. I think it will be UGA by 10 points. Vandy has the best defense UGA has been against so far and UGA’s OL will be in for a fight.

flo-ri-duh

VD – Murray is 6′1″ and Vandy’s DL is 6′ so he could see over their DL. It was the chop blocking , holding and late hits that got the complaints.

You are a typica Leg Humper flo; everybody always plays dirty against the poor humpers. Guess you forgot about Ben “Leg Whip” Jones he held, bit and chopped Nick Fairly and then wanted to fight when he pounded your little prancing QB like a rag doll.

The refs really blew a late call for Vandy at the end of the annual contest against Darth Visor.

That being sad, UGA’s Thunder and Lightning should score more than enough points to sink the ‘Dores’ ship!

We need to play defense for four quarters…right now we are in a huge slump on defense in the first half…very disappointed in commings play coming back from suspendion. I’m really concerned about our o-line moving forward towards conference play. I doubt we even average 30 points in sec play…with our no depth and youthful o-line…we need datzler and houston to play and soon. In a season where the schedule is favorable to win the mnc….We wont get there once again because of a horendus o-line once again will do us in…thanks richt….I hope grantham will have the defense playing top five ball starting this week or a 8-4 season is looming

If Georgia finishes strong this year they should come away with a W. Don’t let them creep back into the game. Try and keep our defense off the field in the 4rth quarter. No quick points on turnovers for Vandy.
