UGA climbs to No. 5 in AP poll

Georgia climbed to No. 5 in the Associated Press college football poll released Sunday, up two spots from last week.

Georgia (3-0) is one of three SEC teams in the nation’s top five, according to the AP’s media vote, and the two SEC West teams that met for last season’s BCS title once again are 1-2 in the poll.

Alabama is No. 1 for the third consecutive week, receiving 58 of 60 first-place votes. LSU moved up one spot to No. 2 after previously No. 2 USC tumbled out of the top 10 in the aftermath of a 21-14 loss at Stanford. LSU got the two first-place votes that didn’t go to Alabama.

Oregon is No. 3 and Florida State No. 4. Georgia, No. 7 last week, moved ahead of Oklahoma, as well as USC, in the AP poll. Oklahoma is No. 6 after being tied with FSU at No. 5 last week.

In the USA Today coaches’ poll also released Sunday, the top four teams are the same as in the AP poll, but Georgia and Oklahoma are flip-flopped. In the coaches’ poll, Oklahoma is No. 5 and Georgia No. 6.

South Carolina gave the SEC a fourth team in the top 10 of both polls — No. 7 in AP and No. 8 in the coaches’.

There are maybe 8 teams that are top 5 teams and I don’t think UGa is one of them.
There are a lot of top 20 teams. It looks like there are 20 teams that could be #11 thru #20 and UGa is somewhere in that group..

I’ve watched USC struggle with Syracuse, the team that struggled with Stonybrook, and watched them get bulldozed by Stanford…they do not belong in the top 20.

Wait to assess the defense after a game when they aren’t missing three, four, or five starters. Hopefully that will be the UT game.

The Dawg Defense had five starters out or did a couple return for this game?
Either way the team got the job done. The game was blacked out in S. Fla. unless you paid to view.

When The D is at 100% with the O playing the way they did we could run the table to play Bama in The SECC Game. Of course I don’t think we’d beat Bama but it’d be nice if it played out that way.

3 – 0 Dawgs. Nice win. Now we begin an SEC run to be first in The East.

Georgia OVERRATED early in the season as usual. UGA is no Top 5 team. FAU blew up our D in the first half. First big game we get blown out. That first big game may not come until the SEC Championship game because of our schedule. But Bama or LSU beat our arse.

twinkie — No, the AP sports writers from all over the country are, in fact, not kidding. You see, their analysis of who the country’s best teams are is not distorted by an unhealthy, jealousy-based inferiority complex like the one you harbor and exhibit on these blogs 24/7/365.

By the way, solid win for the Jackets yesterday. How’d you fare in the rankings?

Don’t worry about it, kids. That’s why they actually play the games. If hot air from know-it-alls determined the outcome, then we wouldn’t need to play. The final poll is the only one that matters. The Dawgs have as much talent as anyone in the country. The defense is totally different with Jones on the field as he may be the best defensive player in the country. That said, UGA will have to prove that their o-line can handle a stout front 7. SC and UF should provide that test. If UGA can beat both of them, then they will have a legit shot at making some noise on a national level. If not, them it’ll be another 10-3 type year.

USC never plays anyone. stanford either for that matter…its bad when you consider stanford your competition and then cant beat them.
UGA may be over rated but they are getting better and better.
Their offense has got to be one of the best in the country.
Their D will be there soon.
If UGA beats south carolina then they will run the table to the SEC championship. A team that believes they can win by that time could actually win!

I think FSU is the dark horse in this conversation. Twinkie, you make some valid points. However, ND will drop at least two this season. I really think it is the winner of UA/LSU vs. ????? Right now we (Alabama) look a little sloppy and haven’t put together a complete game. It was good though to see many 4th/5th string guys playing……just like the Bryant days.

Ga’s D is for real, though. The question is can the O line hold up in the trenches down the stretch and can Murray (really like that kid) make the plays when he needs to?

Plus Fl really looked good in the 4th last night.

I still think the East comes down to winner of SC/GA

They should be ranked 15 – 18. They ended last season with a woeful performance by a bad Michigan State team. And they haven’t prove anything yet this year. What will get them is what always gets them. They will go up against an equal (or close) team and underperform and go back to the ranking they deserve … 15 — 18.

UGA’s offense looks as good as anyone’s in the country. The defense was missing JJ, Ogletree and Rambo on Saturday. You noticed after they got the second TD they did not get anything else until Lemay threw that pick 6 so they were shut out in the second half. UGA should be #4 they are better than FSU. LSU gave up 14 points to Idaho (who is 0-3) and gave up over 200 yards to them but LSU is still #2 even though they’ve played no one.

you cant rank a team according to what they did the last game of the season. If that was the case then ohio state, oregon, usc, etc would never be ranked cause they always lose to the SEC in the championship…

I watched the game. Dawgs D started slow because we benched Jarvis Jones and let some young guns get some experience before we take on a long trip thru a gradually harder SEC schedule. They got burned a couple times, something Rambo will not let happen when he returns. Let’s hope Jarvis’ groin gets better soon and doesn’t become an issue later this season.

QB and receivers looked great. Gurley, Marshall and Malcome looked great! Having that threat balance is going to be the key to nailing down wins week after week. I’d like to see us establish the run earlier against a tougher opponent before giving ‘em more credit.

To achieve the dual threat on Offense, we need a solid O line which can open holes and provide Murray with protection against the SEC’s fast D’s before we even talk about the end of the season. I was just glad to see we didn’t get 6 false starts like we did last week.

Good job to a great crew – coaches and players alike have to be happy with their performance. Now start watching tape as get ready to take on a red hot Vandy, who looked great in their shutout and is building a solid program. One week at a time guys… Guess that’s just our Old Man Football ;)

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I agree with twinkie… sort of. No question Alabama and LSU are the best teams (again). I love UGA, but we just aren’t in their class. We COULD be, but we have a long way to go AND we have to show it on the field. I think Oklahoma and Oregon or next. How do you have Notre Dame as a top 5ish team? But I must say, I think UGA COULD be top 5, but really we’re at least a top 20 team. Hope I’m wrong and we can really turn it on here starting wtih Vandy next week.

against WHO exactly?
Not many teams have played Difficult teams yet but Padding My Stats against the Sisters of the Poor MURRAY hasn’t faced a good D yet.

Florida showed some Speed in the UT game
FSU has Speed too but I don’t think they have a Great O. Can’t really judge based on the competition so far.

Oregon is playing Football like a fastbreak basketball team but again not sure you can tell much based on the competition so far.

I gotta say the Beast has a point. Gotta take it week by week. Anything can happen, ask USC. Talking about ‘best’ this and that, post season talk…it’s all bs.

We’ve got a long, awesome season ahead of us where anything can happen. We’ve got a lot of W’s to post before we can even think about being Top 5.

What’s all the fuss about Top 5 anyway? Only #1 at the end counts… To paraphrase the eternal words of Ricky Bobby – everybody else is just the first losers.
